LAST IMAGE

Les glaciers sont comme des êtres vivants : ils respirent, filtrent, se forment et se déforment. Ils font partie du paysage de montagne et sont le paysage. Ils irriguent les vallées propices à l’homme et participent à garder la vie en équilibre. Recouverts sous une couche de neige toujours plus fine, au fond de crevasses… il y a des blocs de glace qui me fascinent. Ces blocs ont commencé à se former il y a parfois plus de 7 000 ans et le long travail du temps les a fait totalement purifiés, transparents. Last Image est un projet réalisé via un outil de captation hybridant digital et minéral, créé pour fonctionner à partir de cette glace pure. Après être descendu dans ces crevasses pour récupérer un peu de ces coeurs de glace purifiée, je les façonne sur la montagne même via différents moulages pour produire des lentilles d’objectifs photo. Ces lentilles sont porteuses de l’histoire géologique du glacier et demeurent vivantes et éphémères. Cette étrange caméra composite photographie à travers et via le glacier même : la lumière qui la traverse, traverse littéralement l’histoire du glacier et la caméra-glacier devient alors, dernier témoin de sa propre disparition. Cet objectif presque ancestral fond pendant la capture même de l'image et crée alors une représentation très picturale, pleine de défauts et changeante : une représentation humaine de la montagne.

Glaciers are like living beings: they breathe, filter, take shapes and re-form. They are part of the mountain landscape and are the landscape. They irrigate the valleys favorable to man and help to keep life in balance. Covered under an ever finer layer of snow, at the bottom of crevices… lie ice blocks that fascinate me. These blocks began to form sometimes more than 7,000 years ago and the long process of time has made them totally purified, transparent. Last Image is a project carried out hybridizing a digital and mineral capture tool, created to work from this pure ice. After descending into these crevices to collect some of these purified ice hearts, I shape them directly on the mountain through various castings to produce camera lenses. These lenses carry the geological history of the glacier and remain alive and ephemeral. This strange composite camera allows me to photograph through and via the glacier itself. The light that goes through it, literally flow through the history of the glacier and the camera-glacier then becomes the last witness to its own disappearance. The lens melts during the very capture of the image, creating a very emotional representation, full of flaws and changing: a human representation.

Vintage Books, coll. “Raymond Carver”

Les œuvres de l’écrivain américain Raymond Carver (1938—1988) ont été rééditées par Vintage Books sous la forme d’une collection de livres brochés dont Peter Buchanan-Smith a signé la ligne graphique en puisant dans les séries Homes at Night et Landscapes du photographe contemporain Todd Hido. Le caractère typographique employé pour les titres est le Jefferson, une scripte commerciale datant du milieu des années 1950, parfois accompagné d’un sous-titre composé en Knockout (Jonathan Hoefler, 1994). Les autres éléments textuels (nom de l’auteur, citation, etc.) utilisent une réédition numérique des caractères néoclassiques gravés au début du dix-neuvième siècle par le typographe allemand Justus Erich Walbaum (1768—1839).

1/ Quel bénéfice le recours à un seul photographe offre-t-il au designer en charge de la ligne graphique de cette collection ? Expliquez en citant des exemples similaires et/ou des contre-exemples.

Lorsque Peter Buchanan-Smith utilise certaines photographies des séries Homes at Night et Landscapes du photographe contemporain Todd Hido, il crée une unité au sein de cette collection. Il est alors facile pour le lecteur de discerner les titres qui font partie de la collection “Raymond Carter”. Angus Hyland qui a travaillé à la conception de la ligne graphique de la collection “Pocket Canons” (1998—1999), crée également une unité grâce au traitement à l’iconographie qu’il a mis en place pour cette sélection de livres de la Bible. Hyland utilise uniquement des photos de banques d’images, avec de provenance extrêmement variée, mais grâce au traitement des images en niveaux de gris et avec un effet sépia, l’ensemble de la collection est cohérent. Pour la collection “Raymond Carver”, la provenance des images est la même, celles de Todd Hido. Les photographies n’ont pas nécessité d’un traitement supplémentaire de la part de Peter Buchanan-Smith pour créer une unité. À l’opposé de cette ligne graphique, la collection 10/18 a une politique iconographique complètement différente. Les images peuvent provenir de banque d’images, de photos d’archives, de tableaux, ou encore des photogrammes. On ne retrouve pas le même effet d’unité dans cette collection que dans celle proposé par Vintage Books pour “Raymond Carver”.

2/ Comment interprétez-vous le contraste singulier produit par la cohabitation des deux principaux caractères typographiques, le Jefferson et le Walbaum, utilisés ici ?

Le Walbaum utilisé notamment pour le nom de l’auteur, est constamment composé de la même manière sur toutes les couvertures : en capitale, sur deux lignes en bas du format. Cette utilisation renforce l’unité graphique et visuelle de la collection. Le Jefferson utilisé pour les titres a un peu plus de liberté e, ce qui concerne son placement sur la couverture. On peut retrouver le titre placé en haut du format, au centre, mais le plus souvent, il se retrouve au-dessus du nom de l’auteur. Le Waulbaum, un caractère néoclassiques à empattements du début du XIXe siècle, permet d’assoir la composition et la rend presque rigide, renforcée par le fait que le Walbaum soit composé en tout capitale. Le contraste est singulier avec l’utilisation du caractère Jefferson, une scripte commerciale, qui ramène un peu de mouvement, à l’opposé du Walbaum.

3/ Que pensez-vous de l’effet de polysémie que créent, sur l’ensemble de ces sept couvertures, les discours implicites tenus respectivement par les images et le “couple typographique” mentionné ci-dessus ? Quel bénéfice d’image peut-il apporter à cette collection.

Les photographies de Todd Hido retranscrivent une ambiance mystérieuse, presque froide avec une unique source de lumière, provenant d’une fenêtre ou encore du ciel. Le choix du caractère Walbaum renforce ce caractère mystérieux et froid ; cette ambiance colle au style d’écriture de Raymond Carter, qui avait le souci de retranscrire la vie des gens les plus modestes, confrontés à des drames ordinaires. Raymond Carter était associé au genre minimaliste, ce qui n’est pas directement retranscrit dans les couvertures notamment avec l’utilisation contrastée du Walbaum et du Jefferson. Cependant, les photographies de Todd Hido restent mystérieuses et de ce fait ne donnent pas beaucoup d’informations sur ce qu’elles représentent au-delà de ce que l’on en perçoit. Enfin, l’utilisation du caractère Jefferson pour les titres permet de ramener une dimension plus vivante dans cette étrange atmosphère. Aussi, le fait que ce caractère soit une scripte, cela laisse penser que de manière manuelle quelqu’un serait venu inscrire le titre. Ce choix iconographique pour cette collection peut permettre de choisir et d’adapter une image en fonction du titre qui est traité. Cela peut apporter une singularité à chaque titre tout en gardant l’unité de la collection.

C’est d’abord à Constance (Allemagne), où elle ouvrit très jeune un atelier, puis à Paris, où elle vécut entre 1962 et début 1969, qu’Ulrike Ottinger a reçu sa formation intellectuelle et artistique. Artiste proche des nouvelles figurations narratives, elle étudia les techniques de la gravure dans l’atelier de Johnny Friedlaender tout en assistant à des conférences, notamment de Claude Lévi- Strauss, Louis Althusser et Pierre Bourdieu. Elle écrit son premier scénario Le double tiroir mongol en 1966. De retour en Allemagne de l'Ouest, elle fonde avec l’Université de Constance le filmclub visuell en 1969, en même temps que la galerie et maison d’édition galeriepress (présentant entre autres Wolf Vostell, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney). Avec l’actrice et figure lesbienne Tabea Blumenschein, elle réalise son premier film en 1972-1973, Laoocon et fils. Installée à Berlin en 1973 elle tourne un documentaire sur le happening Berlinfever-Wolf Vostell. Après avoir célébré le retour sur la scène berlinoise de la grande performeuse, mime et danseuse des années 1920 Valeska Gert (L’enchantement des marins bleus, 1975), Ottinger fait de Tabea Blumenschein la figure-culte de Madame X (1977). On la retrouve dans deux des films de la Trilogie berlinoise, composée de Aller jamais retour (1979), Freak Orlando (1981) et Dorian Gray dans le miroir de la presse à scandale (1984). Filmée dans les ruines industrielles de la ville, cette trilogie réunit Magdalena Montezuma, Veruschka von Lehndorff, Eddie Constantine, Kurt Raab, Peer Raben et bien sûr Delphine Seyrig. Celle-ci jouera son dernier rôle dans le merveilleux Johanna d’Arc of Mongolia réalisé en Mongolie en 1989.

La collaboration entre Delphine Seyrig et Ulrike Ottinger est l’un des points forts de l’exposition Muses Insoumises/Defiant Muses (curatrices : Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez et Giovanna Zapperi), qui s’est tenue jusqu’au 17/7/20 au Reina Sofia de Madrid. En plus des fictions, Ulrike Ottinger a consacré de longues périodes à la recherche pour ses films documentaires qui l’ont menée en Chine (de China. The Arts-The People (1985)’ jusqu’à Exile Shanghai (1997)), ou en Europe du Sud-Est (dont Southeast Passage, 2002, montré à la Documenta 11 d’Okwui Enwezor en 2002). Ottinger s’attache à filmer le Berlin d’après la chute du mur, tourne également à Vienne (Prater, 2007), en Corée (L’armoire de mariage coréenne, 2009) ou au Japon (Under Snow, 2011). Elle s’engage sur les traces d’Adalbert von Chamisso et des explorateurs des 18-19e siècles filmant durant trois mois dans le détroit de Bering (L’ombre de Chamisso, un film de 12h, et une exposition à la Bibliothèque nationale de Berlin). Entre 2017 et 2019, elle a réalisé son Paris Calligrammes, film présenté actuellement à Paris après une exposition à la HKW de Berlin. Les films d'Ulrike Ottinger ont été montrés, entre autres, dans les festivals de Toronto, Amsterdam, Moscou, Londres, Montréal, Jérusalem et Rio de Janeiro. Ils ont fait l’objet de rétrospectives dans le monde entier, notamment à la Cinémathèque française et au Centre Pompidou à Paris, au Museo Reina Sofia de Madrid, au MoMA de New York et au Center for Contemporary Art de Tel Aviv. Ils ont également reçu de nombreux prix, dont le prix du public à Montréal et celui de la critique de cinéma allemande. En 2011, Ottinger a reçu le prix Hannah Höch pour l’ensemble de sa carrière et l’Université Concordia de Montréal l’a nommée docteure honoris causa pour les beaux-arts en 2018. Elle a également été invitée en tant que jurée aux Oscars 2019. Travaillant pour le théâtre (Elfriede Jelinek, Olga Neuwirth, …) dont elle conçoit les décors, Ulrike Ottinger s’identifie non seulement comme artiste, peintre, cinéaste, mais aussi comme scénariste, directrice de la photo, créatrice de costumes et photographe. Elle a collecté et publié une archive visuelle (Bilderarchiv) en 2005 et réalisé un atlas-collage de quarante ans de productions visuelles (Floating Food, 2011). Plusieurs expositions récentes, dont à la n.b.k. de Berlin en 2011, ont permis de revenir sur son travail des années 1960, célébré aujourd’hui dans l’exposition collective SHE-BAM POW POP WIZZ ! Les amazones du Pop au Mamac de Nice.

La galerie Eric Mouchet à Paris présente actuellement l’exposition Ulrike Ottinger, Aller toujours retour et le film Paris-Calligrammes est au programme des cinémas Reflets-Médicis et Luminor à Paris.

[EN] Ulrike Ottinger was born in Konstanz in 1942. She lived in Paris from 1962 to 1969 as a painter and photographer, where she also wrote her first film script Die mongolische Doppelschublade. Graphic works originated at the Atelier Friedländer. She returned to Germany in 1969, where she founded the filmclub Visuell in cooperation with the Universität Konstanz and the galeriepress (in which she presented Wolf Vostell, Allan Kaprow, R. B. Kitaj, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney).

Her first film, Laocoon and Sons, made in collaboration with Tabea Blumenschein, was recorded in 1971-1973. In 1973 she moved to Berlin and filmed the Happening-documentary Berlinfever – Wolf Vostell. It was followed by The Enchantment of the Blue Sailors in 1975 with Valeska Gert, and by Madame X – An Absolute Ruler in 1977, which was an international success. Work on the Berlin Trilogy, Ticket of No Return, (Bildniseiner Trinkerin,1979), Freak Orlando (1981) and Dorian Grey in the YellowPress (Dorian Grey im Spiegel der Boulevardpresse, 1984) began in 1979. She was able to win Delphine Seyrig, Magdalena Montezuma, Veruschka von Lehndorff, Eddie Constantine and Kurt Raab, as well as the composer Peer Raben for these works, which were filmed in industrial wastelands and alienated urban landscapes.

The collaboration between Delphine Seyrig and Ulrike Ottinger was part of the exhibition Defiant Muses (curators : Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez & Giovanna Zapperi) at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid

In addition to fictional films, Ulrike Ottinger also devoted herself to documentary film. Intensive and comprehensive research characterizes all her films from China. The Arts – The People (China. Die Künste – Der Alltag, 1985) to Exile Shanghai (1997), from Southeast Passage (2002, exhibited at Okwui Enwezor’s Documenta 11) to Prater (2007), from The Korean Wedding Chest, to Under Snow filmed in the Japanese Snow Country Echigo. For her film Chamisso’s Shadow (2016) Ulrike Ottinger travelled for three months along the Bering Sea, tracing the paths taken by the great 18th and 19th C explorers. This is her longest documentary to date (12 hours); the accompanying exhibition took place in the National Library in Berlin.

Ottinger's most recent film, Paris Calligrammes, premiered in the spring of 2020 and in Paris on October 6. Both her films and her photographic work have been shown in numerous retrospectives and exhibitions, including at the Venice Biennale (1980), at the Cinémathèque française, Paris (1980, 1982), at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2000, 2004), as well as the Centre Pompidou, the Sammlung Goetz. Her Hannah-Höch-Award 2011 was accompanied by a retrospective including her paintings at the nbk,Berlin (2011 12) and her worldimages were shown at the kestnergesellschaft in Hannover (2013).

Social Distancing, à voir jusqu’au 16 août à @expositionformat ! Ces images ont été prises en Suisse durant la période de confinement imposée par le Gouvernement en raison de la pandemie de Covid-19. Les photographies questionnent la notion de distanciation sociale. Ici imposée, la solitude existe pourtant au quotidien pour de nombreuses personnes. Seuls, dans un décor calme et vide, ces personnages semblent en attente, coupés du monde. Sont-ils si solitaires en raison de la quarantaine, ou ces mêmes images auraient-elles pu être prises en dehors de ces circonstances exceptionnelles? Les architectures, objets de loisirs ici détaillés alors qu’ils sont mis hors service, de- viennent des objets absurdes, irréels, angoissants, tout comme les paysages dans lesquels se trouvent ces individus. La notion d’échelle renforce ce sentiment de solitude et nous renvoie à notre propre position dans la société et le monde qui nous entoure. /// These images were taken in Switzerland during the containment period imposed by the Government due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The photographs question the notion of social distancing. Here forced by law, loneliness however exists on a daily basis for many people. Alone, in a calm and empty scenery, these characters seem to be waiting, cut off from the world. Are they alone due to quarantine, or could these same pictures have been taken out of these exceptional circumstances? The architectures, objects of leisure detailed here when they are put out of service, become absurd, unreal, distressing objects, just like the landscapes in which the persons are found. The notion of scale reinforces this feeling of loneliness and refers us to our own position in society and the world around us. Mañana 17 de Diciembre daré unas vacaciones a alteregodepega. No voy a borrarlo, pero dejaré de postear cosas por un tiempo.

He pasado momentos de todo tipo desde que en 2014 empecé con el blog. Al margen de los tumblr considerados temáticos que atrajeron inicialmente mi interés (especializados, por ejemplo, en comics, coches de los años´50, motocicletas antiguas, pin-ups o hot-rods) me llamaba la atención la anarquía y libertad de algunos contenidos, la oportunidad de ver cosas muy variadas, o simplemente, que no podían verse en ningún otro lugar.

Unas mejores, otras peores, sinceramente.

Así, poco a poco, mi tumblr empezaba a llenarse de imágenes que yo consideraba evocadoras: paisajes, faros, playas, bosques otoñales, lluvia en las ventanas, rostros de bellas mujeres y retratos en ángulos diferentes (entre las imágenes de mi archivo, hay una constante admiración por Marilyn Monroe,Veronica Lake o Eva Green, entre otras). También abundaban los posters antiguos de viajes y lugares exóticos, originales de comics de la edad de oro, o simplemente, artistas digitales de la más rabiosa actualidad. Durante todo este tiempo me he acostumbrado a visitaros y a hacerme eco de vuestras mejores o más evocadoras imágenes, para rebloguearlas o simplemente decir que “ me gusta “.

Ahora, que parece que va a haber un cambio drástico, aprovecharé para detenerme y mirar alrededor. Volveré más adelante, cuando pase la tormenta. Tal vez para entonces algunos ya no estéis aquí. Si es así, lamentaré mucho no volveros a ver.

Ha sido un enorme placer saber que estabais al otro lado. A los que os sigo.

Tomorrow, December 17, I will take a vacation to alteregodepega.

I'm not going to cancel it, but I'll stop posting things for a while.

I have spent very special moments since I started blogging in 2014. Apart from the tumblr considered thematic that initially attracted my interest (specialized, for example, in comics, cars of the fifties, old motorcycles, pin-ups or hot-rods) I liked the variety and freedom of some content , the opportunity to see very different things, or simply, the things that could not be seen anywhere else.

Some better, others worse, honestly.

So, slowly, my tumblr began to fill with images that I considered evocative: landscapes, lighthouses, beaches, autumn forests, rain in the windows, faces of beautiful women and portraits in different angles (among the images of my file, there are a constant admiration for Marilyn Monroe, Veronica Lake or Eva Green, among others).

There were also plenty of old posters of travel and exotic places, originals of comics of the golden age, or simply, digital artists from today.

I discovered some masters of classic photography (beyond the well-known Cartier Bresson) such as Fred den Ouden, Brassaï, Vivian Maier, William Vanderson ... it is beautiful to discover photographs that almost have “real life”, telling stories in silence.

During all this time I´m used to visiting some tumblrs to discover your best or most evocative images, to sharing, reblog them or simply to say "I like it".

Now, it seems that a drastic change is coming. So, I will take the opportunity to stop and look around. I'll come back later, when the storm passes.

Maybe by then some of you are no longer here.

If so, I'll be very sorry not to see you again. It has been a great pleasure to know that you were on the other side. To those who follow you. To those who have followed me. To those who have lost a few seconds of your time watching "alteregodepega".

Demain, le 17 Décembre, je donnerai des vacances à alteregodepega. Je ne vais pas l'effacer, mais je vais arrêter de poster des choses pendant un temps.

J'ai passé toutes sortes de moments depuis que j'ai commencé à bloguer en 2014. À part le tumblr considéré comme thématique qui a initialement attiré mon intérêt (spécialisé, par exemple, dans la bande dessinée, les voitures des années 50, les vieilles motos, les pin-ups ou les hot-rods), j'ai été frappé par l'anarchie et la liberté de contenu, la possibilité de voir des choses très variées, ou simplement, qui ne pourraient être vues nulle part ailleurs.

Certains mieux, d'autres pire, honnêtement.

Ainsi, petit à petit, mon tumblr a commencé à se remplir d'images que je considérais comme évocatrices: paysages, phares, plages, forêts d'automne, pluie aux fenêtres, visages de belles femmes et portraits sous différents angles (parmi les images de mon dossier, il y a une admiration constante pour Marilyn Monroe, Veronica Lake ou Eva Green, entre autres). Il y avait aussi beaucoup d'anciennes affiches de voyages et de lieux exotiques, des originaux de bandes dessinées de l'âge d'or ou tout simplement des artistes numériques d'actualités des plus enragées. J'ai découvert des maîtres de la photographie classique (au-delà du célèbre Cartier Bresson) tels que Fred den Ouden, Brassaï, Vivian Maier, William Vanderson ... c'est beau de découvrir des photographies qui ont tant de vie, qu'elles racontent des histoires en silence.

Pendant tout ce temps, je me suis habitué à vous rendre visite et à faire écho à vos images les meilleures ou les plus évocatrices, à les réprimander ou simplement à dire "je les aime".

Maintenant, il semble y avoir un changement radical, je vais en profiter pour m'arrêter et regarder autour de moi. Je reviendrai plus tard, quand la tempête passera.

Peut-être que certains d'entre vous ne sont peut-être plus là.

Si c'est le cas, je serai très désolé de ne plus vous revoir. Ce fut un grand plaisir de savoir que vous étiez de l'autre côté. A ceux qui j´ai suivi. Pour ceux qui m'ont suivi. C'erano anche molti vecchi poster di viaggi e luoghi esotici, originali di fumetti dell'età dell'oro, o semplicemente, artisti digitali delle notizie più rabbiose. Ho scoperto alcuni maestri della fotografia classica (oltre al noto Cartier Bresson) come Fred den Ouden, Brassaï, Vivian Maier, William Vanderson ... è bello scoprire fotografie che hanno tanta vita, che raccontano storie in silenzio.

Durante tutto questo tempo mi sono abituato a visitarti e ad echeggiare le tue immagini migliori o più evocative, a rimproverarle o semplicemente a dire "Mi piace".

Ora, sembra che ci sarà un cambiamento drastico, coglierò l'occasione per fermarmi e guardarmi attorno. Tornerò più tardi, quando passerà la tempesta.
