This is a 90-minute audio recording of Reinier Zonneveld EDC 2023 Live Set, recorded May 21, 2023, at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas. The set began at 2:30 AM the following morning.

The biggest problem with EDC is the fact that one person can't be two places at once. In my case I'd be in three of four places simultaneously. There's just so much good talent to see, so many interesting styles, sub-genres, and stage productions.

Neon Garden would be stage I'd frequent more if I could. I happen to prioritize house nowadays, but I appreciate good techno, as well. When planning my EDC schedule, I hoped to hit at least one set at Neon Garden. I wasn't sure where to go after Marshmello b2b Svdden Death Kinetic Field. I suppose most would hang around for Excision. I've seen Excision plenty of times. I like his music, but I wanted something different. I wanted some techno at Neon Garden.

The stage is managed by the Factory 93 crew. I get a sense these are the techno "snobs" of the industry. I don't mean that in a derogatory way. I mean these are the purists, the ones really into music, who closely follow the producers who make the music and the dj's who spin it. The lineups always include the most respected names.

The theme and layout of Neon Garden is topic of frequent discussion. For the last few years, the area has beren defined by a collection of shipping containers, stacked and angled to encompass the stage and crowd area. Somewhat stark and simplistic, some like it, some don't. To some, the containers reminded them of warehouse parking lots – original rave locations. The minimalist production allows the music to take center stage. Others think the metal boxes look boring and don't live up to EDC's high production standards.

I'm indifferent. It's not the most spectacular production, but it's not bad, either. I assume the shipping containers have a practical purpose. They effectively block sound from bleeding in and out of the area. I also like the way they dressed them up this year LED strips. With the massive laser arrays firing off, the gyrating lights spinning, and the LED strips circulating, it's a powerfully hypnotic effect. The undulating visual patterns coupled with the repetitive, driving beats easily puts one int a techno-induced trance. Nice.

The lineup card showed "live" next to Reinier Zonneveld's name. I think that meant he would perform a live pa set using controllers and laptop(s) to generate the music. It looked like he had two controller devices positioned above the cdj's. I was too far away to see details.

The set was what I hoped for. Hard driving, impersonal, techno. Few vocals or lyrics. At a certain point in the journey, one may desire little more than a mechanical, familiar beat, something to hang on to, to prevent one from slipping too far from reality. That ever-comforting, up-tempo, 4/4 beat.

I persisted in the dark crowd, swaying and bobbing my head, partially hypnotized, but still cognizant that my time at EDC was about to end. After this set, I would bounce, and EDC LV 2023 would be over for me.

To thousands like me, EDC is the highpoint of the calendar year. Yes there are big holidays, religious holidays, national holidays. Of course those are important. To the raver, big festivals like EDC are valued just as much, probably more so. Our year revolves around EDC.

When EDC ends, one feels a wide spectrum of emotions.

It's sadness mixed with elation.

Obviously, there is sadness. It sucks when the music stops and the party ends. It sucks to say goodby to the humans you connected with, but also to the space itself. The sacred space.

There's also a sudden sense of emptiness. When one is overfilled with music, light, energy, and human connection – for three days straight – mundane day four can be a shock. Emotional systems go haywire for a few days. Mine does.

At the same time, there is an overwhelming sense of satisfaction, completeness, and achievement.

The deed is done. The Journey is complete. I survived. But I didn't just survive. I survived AND witnessed some of the most incredible spectacle on the planet! I saw and danced to my favorite artists. I met new people and made friends. I communed with the giant Kinetic Field goddess. I traded kandi. I laughed and cried and felt all the other cliché emotions. It's a peak life experience, clearly, and all the associated emotions bubble up over the next 72 hours or so.

And then I feel that extra special awareness. I remember that I have the holy documents, the files, the recordings of the sets I just experienced!

I'm a planner, so I always plan to have an assortment of ice-cold drinks waiting in my car for the drive back. I nurse a strawberry Gatorade (electrolytes, yum!) and drive north along the two-lane highway connecting the premier lot to the 15 on-ramp.

It's around the time the sky changes from dark blue to gray. In the rearview mirror I see flashing lights from the speedway. Occasionally there will be puffs of fire. I smile to myself, knowing my people are still there, still raging, still going hard until the final notes of the final song of the final set end.

I loop around onto the 15 and pass the speedway on the left. Still going off haha.

There's a twinge of regret over leaving early, but that's quickly replaced by the relief knowing I'll be back at my comfy hotel room soon.

I won't detail my entire decompression routine, but I will say I got smart a few years ago and learned to stay in Vegas Monday night. That extra day makes everything less stressful. That Monday day I isolate in the hotel room, sleep, rehydrate, eat vitamins, edit and post sets until evening. Then I'll go out to fancy dinner with a Vegas friend and eat the first normal sit-down meal I've had in three days. During the the meal, I try in vain to explain the magic I just experienced. Regardless, it feels good to reconnect with an old friend, and we end up having a deep conversation about profound and spiritual concepts.

Tuesday morning, after a good night's sleep, I pack up, haul the gear to the car, and head back to LA.

That drive home through the desert is always surreal.

I refuse to listen to music for the first hour or so. Some of the sets I recorded are live and ready to stream off SoundCloud. I could do more testing of the fidelity over the car system. I don't. Not at first, at least.

I need some silence. I need to cleanse my auditory pallet a little. Also, there's still a beat in my head. After being pounded into my being for three days, the imprint of the beat remains long after the music stops.

So I just cruise home in the desert, cruise home in silence.

The next few days are a blur of motion. I spend every possible moment editing, journaling, and sharing sets, one foot still planted at EDC. But I have to address the mundane, worldly tasks, too. Someone has to feed the cat, take the kids to school, wash the dishes, and a dozen other household chores.

It's a balancing act. It takes focus and dedication, for sure. And finishing this set marks the completion of delivering my EDC 2023 content.

It's Monday, May 29, 2023. Veteran's day. Just about a week and a day since the music at EDC stopped. It took me that long to get out 11 sets. Not bad, I suppose, considering the balancing act I have to manage.

But it's a good feeling knowing I can tie a little bow around EDC 2023, consider it "in the can", and move on to the next project.

And there are indeed some interesting projects on the horizon...

a jew review of: nhl team happy hanukkah posts

good evening and chag sameach to my hanukkah-celebrating pals out there on hockeyblr. today i bring you: a non-comprehensive and entirely subjective review from one (1) jewish hockey fan of the graphics posted by various nhl teams in celebration of the first night tonight. i definitely missed some, and some teams didn't post any at all, so it's a bit patchwork. here we go.

vancouver canucks: this is an extremely serviceable graphic. love the blurred dreidels to give the effect that they are spinning. very funny. props for the detail that there is a shadow of the menorah on the ice. straightforward. icemenorah is a themeTM but some did it better than others and this is a classic. 7/10

carolina hurricanes: obsessed with what the canes have done here though i cannot comprehend it. the weird techno style textured background. the out of focus magen david around. THE HURRICANES. IN HEBREW. WITH THE LITTLE CANES LOGO THING I FORGET THE NAME OF ON THE HEI? INCREDIBLE. points for creativity. overall baffling vibes. 6/10.

pittsburgh penguins: this is just adorable. you hired someone to draw this. spectacular work, guys. it's giving a bit of 'we browsed the target hanukkah deco section for inspo' but it's too adorable for me to care. it's team themed, it's hockey themed, it's holiday appropriate. love everything going on here. they get points for doing what very few other teams are doing and remembering this is night one, so only one candle is lit. most everyone else is getting a bit a head of themselves. 9/10.

washington capitals: and here we have another edition of the icemenorah, with a minimalist twist. this graphic screams 'oh fuck wait is that tonight' which to be fair is also how i, a jew, felt about realizing tonight was the first night of hanukkah. could'a done more, but it's perfectly fine. 6/10.

new jersey devils: this fucks. it's got devils themes. it's got a cool style. it's got vibes. it's got: more hockey stick menorahs which i am always excited about. that shamash candle is a graphic design nightmare but other than that i am all on board. 8/10

vegas golden knights: i love the gold foil effect and that you remembered there was more to hanukkah than candles, that's nice, as is involving the other affiliates! however. where are the vibes. this is not the vgk wishes you a chag sameach, this is a greeting card i got on etsy. 6/10 just bc i KNOW you can do better. where's the neon, babes.

los angeles kings: oh this is fun. it's icemenorah: WITH A TWIST. the art style is cute, it's got plenty of hockey theme, it's also very obviously LA-y, i'm giving them points for this one. the shadow is insane but that's okay, it's ~stylistic. it's cute. 7/10. UPDATE: definitely AI. boo hiss. 0/10.

montréal canadiens: this is probably my favourite for sheer vibes. you got: levitating icemenorah. you got: action-shot candle lighting. you got: remembering this is night ONE. you got: the implication that the torch is the shamash candle????? you got: JOYEUSE HANOUKKA!!!!!!!! (and like happy hanukkah or whatever i guess). obsessed. it's so funny. it's amazing. 9/10.

Frederick Sinclair is a really interesting foil to Mr. House. I mean you start digging into this and it's just parallel after parallel after parallel. Start at the high level. House sinks inordinate amounts of resources into saving the city of Las Vegas - not the people, but the city- from nuclear destruction; as long as the stage endures, he can get anyone to wear the costumes. Sinclair sets up an entirely new "community" totally off-the-grid for the sake of protecting one woman, plasters that place with her likeness. House is a visionary with a 200-year action plan to rebuild society in his image, bootstrap space exploration, and construct an interplanetary empire; Sinclair sank everything he had into building the most secure facility possible for a woman who he knew was terminally ill anyway, just to ensure that her last few years lived in the aftermath of the nuclear apocalypse would be as comfortable as possible- there's a fundamental pessimism baked into what he was doing. Both House and Sinclair relied heavily on automated defensive systems and cutting-edge, esoteric technologies to accomplish their ends, but House built his power base on proprietary robotics and computing technology, much of which he personally designed- an outgrowth of his policy of never widening his circle any more than he absolutely has to. Sinclair, in his naive techno-optimism, outsourced his utopia, grabbing flashy third-party technologies like a kid in a candy store- opening a backdoor for the Think Tank to poison his city and ultimately getting everyone at the Gala Event killed when the holograms malfunctioned and went berserk.

Their management styles are inverse. House allows countless abuses to occur under his aegis because he subscribes to a libertarian-when-convenient philosophy where he doesn't much care what the little people do as long as he gets his cut and they don't rock the boat too much- a hands-off approach that fosters resentment amongst his subordinates, lets the White Gloves and Omertas get up to untold levels of fuckery while Freeside languishes and Benny conspires against him. Sinclair, by contrast, had a sincerely-held utopian-straight-edge safety-first micromanagement approach built into the very bones of the casino, he appeared to genuinely give a shit about the safety of the construction crew on the villa, and he was well-liked by nearly everyone who had any direct contact with him- and yet untold horrors also went down under his aegis, because his myopic focus on building the vault for Vera let Dean Domino and the Think Tank run circles around him, good intentions be damned. Their respective interpersonal dispassion and obsession are on display in how they react to betrayal. House's tone never rises above exasperation when it comes time to clean house of Benny, the Omerta Leadership and the White gloves; he treats them as problems to be solved, gears that are slightly out of alignment; By contrast, when Sinclair learns that Dean and Vera have been playing him, he channels the monomaniacal energy he previously directed towards protecting Vera towards the goal of building the perfect poetic-ironic death trap for her and Dean.

There are some other parallels in their personal lives. For one thing they both trusted a pastiche of a 40s lounge singer a lot more than they should have. They both tried to digitize, immortalize their girlfriends- and the discrepancy in how they went about it is telling. House's recreation of Jane isn't terribly robust, and in terms of House's overall project she's an afterthought. She's more a sock-puppet than a person, a sanded-down copy of a woman who died forever-and-a-half ago, forever agreeable, never saying no. Convenient. Only the most superficial visual elements preserved- an illustration of her face on a robotic chassis. Sinclair was obsessive in recreating Vera, preserving her likeness. It's all over the villa, her hologram is everywhere, her voice is everywhere. The terminal in the lightwave lab in Old World Blues reveals that he was still obsessed with getting her hologram right even after the love curdled into hate. All of it a monument to the real woman, and yet in all of it the real woman is still lost, buried under the mythologized projection. He didn't respect the real person enough to let her know that she was dying. A total failure of preservation from the opposite direction. (Except in the suites, where you can hear her very authentic dying pleas.)

You find both of them in their basements. House only looks a little better than Sinclair, but he's got much more of a voice in the narrative. He took steps to make sure he'd be around to tell you what he thinks about everything, fine-tuned the voice with which he speaks to the world, the face he presents. It matters to him that he gets to tell his own story. We find out a lot about House, from House; but for the kind of figure that he is, a shocking amount of what we learn about Sinclair comes from other people, people who knew him or wrote about him. The only image of him you can find is a downplayed element of a larger mosaic. The two documents you find that're written from his perspective have been buried for 200 years, and they're yards from his corpse. And the more recent of the two is an apology. I mean admittedly at the point where he wrote that apology Sinclair was personally turbofucked regardless. If the cloud didn't get him the holograms would have, or the radiation, or, or, or. You can read some level of ego into what he did in the face of that. But however futile it was, he died in the specific way that he did because he recognized that he'd done something awful, and he was trying everything he could think of to correct it. Somehow I find it very hard to imagine House doing either of those things- admitting fault or putting skin of his own in the game to make it right.

I found a book I wrote... well I don't know when. It's in screenplay format but its all there. 240 pages of it. I think I did it in 2010ish. A few months before Fallout New Vegas came out.

Its a post apocalyptic story centered Hurricane Utah and Zion Canyon. Group of raiders held up in Zion drawing away the resources of the Republic based in Salt Lake City in fighting so they turn a blind eye to Las Vegas and Groom Lake where a sinister techno overlord is secretly kidnapping people and implanting them with cybernetics to make a drone army.

MC had his father killed ten years previous. Tracked the bastards all around the southern US then finally back home where the story starts. He joins up with a merc company, fights the Zion raiders and there's Mormon Militia in it too.

Dang I think I need to do a second draft of this.

When I wrote ‘Pretty Ranger' I was learning songs on my guitar from Jefferson Airplane, The Doors and Nancy Sinatra etc. I had just moved into a house that had a 60s, 70s aesthetic with sunflowers in the bathroom walls and sink. I created a fictional character after these influences named Darling, who just moved to Las Vegas to pursue a new life. The song was left unfinished and I dove into Trap and hip hop songwriting later on. I recently went back to my sketchbook and finished arranging the chords and lyrics. I like the idea of putting out different genres of music and my producer made an amazing Techno beat with a Retrowave touch. This song is an interpolation of the past into the future.

DIONYSOS

Another one of Artemis' only remaining allies, which is fairly unexpected considering how often the two end up squabbling. He is the pinnacle of all things hedonistic: wine, festivity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, the list goes on... Dionysos conducts himself accordingly, of course.

He has always spent time on earth with the mortals—or nymphs and satyrs, maenads, whomever desired to follow his whims. He has had several cults dedicated to him—and still does—although now they have taken on a much more modern form.

Nowadays, Dionysos can either be found at raves or college house parties. He is well known amongst frat houses for distributing alcohol and drugs freely, and for always having a banging party. Sometimes, he may even be located in Las Vegas, a resident party and gambling hub, or in Germany, where there is a very popular rave and techno scene.

Along with all of this, Dionysos has taken on responsibility for the creation of the new Oracle of Delphi—the Pythia. This was more or less accidental, as normally Apollon would be the one spearheading something like that, but since he has gone rogue things have become rather dire. Of course, Dionysos has absolutely no idea what to do now that there is a modern Oracle walking around. He accidentally keeps gifting her with sudden visions of Pina Coladas with twisty straws and umbrellas.

Worse, the Oracle is one of Artemis' former huntresses that inadvertently disappeared a few centuries ago. The Pythia has no recollection of her past life since being gifted the power of foresight. Artemis has yet to speak to Dionysos on this subject, but it does have to be addressed very soon.

Dionysos appears as a slim, fairly effeminate man, ambiguous in age and sexuality but ready to party nonetheless.

This is going to be the first in a series of posts where I basically go over what I've listened to in a day. I spend a lot of my usual day shuffling through my RateYourMusic wishlist and deciding what to listen to then, if not doing anything else. You can find them all on my RYM account and also sift through everything that I've listened to since I made that account. I might not post on every day, don't expect this to be consistent, but I like music, like talking about music and like sharing my thoughts to you all. Let's begin!

Green Day – Insomniac (1995)

Thought I'd kick my day off with a total rocker, which is definitely healthy after cleaning your ears. I'm not a big Green Day fiend, but I ended up just barely loving my experiences with their two big records Dookie & American Idiot, so I thought it only suited me to dive into their catalogue more and see what I can get out of it. Insomniac is more of the same that they contributed with Dookie, however, it's much more homogenous. At least ten of the songs here sound about the same to me and the only standouts are slight deviances or singles that I've already heard, which even then are not that different either. Monstercat 008: Anniversary (2012)

I really don't take enough time to shoutout my love for the Monstercat label, especially their earlier years. I'm slowly going over revisiting their EDM compilations and I've now surpassed nearly their first year in releases. By this point, they've already reached their first utter peak with 007: Solace and while this slightly dips from that peak, 008: Anniversary continues their streak of great compilations that truly started with 006: Embrace. By this point, while some tracks still remain rudimentary and even a little primitive in a few rare spots, the collective of talented producers continued to refine their growing densities while still introducing more cool peeps in the process. I still recommend Solace if you're starting out, but this is still a great followup and a very consistent one at that.

Maxime Denuc – Nachthorn (2022)

This one was a very random recommendation given to me by IneptAndy, but one that I'm not opposed to now that I've given it a fair shake. I've always been fond of minimalism, even though I've hardly taken the time out to explore the genre myself. I've only gotten so far as the legendary works of Steve Reich & Philip Glass, but I already adored the sound of the genre from those two alone. This one is only Maxime Denuc on an organ, but a midi-controlled one, which leads to some wildly interesting and abstract soundscapes. I'm not a fan of the drone opener Edo, but aside from that, the rest of the album is a great listen. I can see people getting pseudo trance and techno vibes from the way this was orchestrated towards the end of the album. I highly recommend it if you're a fan of ambient and minimalist music, even if this one was a bit bare bones.

Cocteau Twins – Treasure (1984)

It's a few hours later and I return from my little casual job to tune into some Cocteau Twins to relax! I'm not huge on the band; I used to think that Heaven or Las Vegas was merely okay, but earlier this year, I came right around to loving it, for its gorgeous soundscapes, beautiful vocal performances and… lyrics. Treasure is their second biggest record, but with the detriment of coming out over half a decade prior. Couple that with said decade just so happening to be the 80s and I was worried I wouldn't dig this one all that much, because at the start, the 80s era production weaknesses really hampered what could've been great tracks to me. (I was even reminded of US Golf 95 for a bit, for some cursed reasons.) By the halfway point though, it really began to click with me and by the end, I could see why some people would consider this to be even better than Heaven or Las Vegas. I'm not in that camp, but it was definitely worth the chance.

Chungking Mansions – 安全出口EXIT空间和时间 (2015)

The next record I tuned into was what I always considered to be one of the most underrated vaporwave albums of all time. This Dream Catalogue deep cut was a deceptively muted but spacious & mystical sci-fi experience that had numerous tracks crafted with really subtly curated samples and detailed, crispy atmosphere. It's a really narrow bridge between vaporwave & dreampunk that comes off as gorgeous & futuristic without standing off too much. It could take some repeat listens to be able to pick apart which song in the tracklist does specifically what, but I would wholly welcome future relistens to this album. If you're wondering, this is a potential hidden gem waiting to be understood more widely in the vapor community.

Dan Deacon – Mystic Familiar (2020)

The final record I chose to go over tonight was Dan Deacon's biggest break, Mystic Familiar. Believe it or not, there was actually a moment in time at the start of 2020 before everything went "oh shit, oh fuck" bad for everybody. Biggest proof of this was Dan's insanely colourful, whimsical, psychedelic and gorgeous crop of electronica and progressive pop! I struggled to listen to so much of 2020 that came after the pandemic, so this was always a lovely one to rely on coming back to, especially with some of the highest soars in music I have heard this decade so far. This always felt like a genuine love letter to nature & life itself and I highly recommend it.

ok so the megamind plot is hero vs villain yadda yadda the hero wants to retire and fakes his death bc megamind in this case quackity is actually kind of a mild threat(maybe either slime or techno is metroman). Quackity has taken over the city and is probably in a silly goofy mood trying to make a new las vegas but feels empty inside and concocts a serum to create a new superhero to oppose him bc hes so lonely 💔 but then i always believed that if things didnt go to shit in the movie he would have ended up injecting the roxanne which would be wilbur w the serum bc he's obviously a real moral hero trying to make a good impact in the news networks from the position he can get (theyre probably anti wilbur bc he serves major cunt too well) and never took q's shit as a hostage.

q can be a bit of a ratty looking bird hybrid sort of avian w bird feet and feathered ears and actual wings that never developed to grant him flight and the super serum can be a little goofy and give wil his white streak ❤️ the plot would end up p different bc it would be tntduo being psycho-competitive just like they were when q was holding reporter wil hostage except this time wil has super powers and hes definitely not titan but maybe he goes a little power crazy wanting to punt this pathetic man into the atmosphere once he realizes how much more powerful he is ❤️ and ofc the roles could be swapped but now i realize that slime could be q's henchman ❤️ ohh or tommy could be wil's 👀

Put this one for size: Techno is Metro Man, Quackity is Megamind, Slime is Minion, Wilbur is Roxanne, and Fundy is Titan

Don't get any gross ideas, it's not a romantic thing between him and Wil, he just desperately wants Wilbur to be his father figure and Wilbur is not having it, and then Quackity acts like his father figure and he's like "FINALLY I HAVE A DAD" but then he sees Wilbur and Quackity together and goes "Oh, so you're gonna be his dad instead??" (not clear which of them he was talking to) and they're both like "clearly not" but Fundy's gonna destroy the city about it anyway
