Dreary weekend in NC-WV, but once I got over my hangover from the WVU-Texas Tech game this morning, I managed to sneak in a quick fall hike on the Virgin Hemlock Trail in Coopers Rock State Forest. The asters are out in force and quite beautiful this fall. Among them are (from top): purplestem aster (Symphyotrichum puniceum); frost aster (Symphyotrichum pilosum), also known as awl aster; calico aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum); and blue wood aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium).

Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is now in bloom throughout Central Appalachia. For many natives steeped in the region’s culture, this gnarled, tenacious evergreen shrub is emblematic of Appalachia’s resilient character and enduring will to survive under the toughest circumstances. The plant is celebrated throughout the region in place names and festivals. But mountain laurel isn’t the only beauty showing off its inflorescence in the local woods; deerberry (Vaccinium stamineum) and mapleleaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium) are both at peak gorgeousness. The flower longhorn beetle (Strangalepta abbreviata) with a face full of viburnum pollen made my week.

i have come up with a better description of my ideal gender presentation. it’s sort of boyish. a little bit fem. it’s a ribbed white tank, black eye liner in my water line, my hair curly from being washed, and my light purple converse as a do a pull up on a jungle jim. (i formally called this boyfriend)

maybe i don’t understand gender or my gender or my perception of gender. maybe these are just things about me, things i do, or things i like that make me feel good. make me feel right. make me feel specifically me. or maybe this is my gender.
