Stronger Together (Pt. 3)
Tumblr media
Warnings for the whole series: Transphobia, Racism, Language, Angst, Fluff, a long ass fic… Haha.
Word Count: 1153
A/N: Thank you so much for requesting this! It was extremely fun to write. I may or may not try to do a part four to this, it would just be a really fluffy fic, but we’ll see! I currently have a few other requests I need to tend to. :) Thank you so much again.
(Pt. 1 | Pt. 2 | Pt. 3)
~~~~~~~~~~~ℒ ~~~~~~~~~~~
“Are you kidding? It’s Lillian Luthor.” She scoffs.
“What do you mean it’s Lillian Luthor?!” You shrieked.
“Rao… She hasn’t told you… She’s nothing like her mom or brother… trust me on that. She’s a good person, one of the best I’ve met.” She rambled.
“I know she is.” You sigh.
Kara looks at you worried, but you smile softly, reassuring her that you’re not upset, just worried.
“Her mother is probably the reason she isn’t here… She loves doing these things.” She sighs.
“Well then let’s go save our girl.” You suggest.
Kara nods. She starts walking towards her car, but you stop her. She looks at you questioningly.
“Tell me her address... “ You mumble.
She only heard you due to her super hearing. She looks at you with a confused look in her eyes.
“Please?”
She nods and tells you. You reach your hand out for her to grab and take off, flying towards her house. You land there within ten minutes.
“Woah what?!” She exclaims.
“Yeah… Kind of sort of not human, I’ll explain later… To both of you.”
You walk up and knock on the door. Lillian opens it and looks at you with a dark, cold expression.
“What do you want? If you’re here about the protests, I don’t want to hear it.” She sighs.
“We’re actually here to talk to Lena Luthor.” Kara steps in.
“She’s busy.”
“Is that why she’s sitting in her room staring at the ceiling?” You ask with a raised eyebrow.
“Excuse me? She’s not even home.” She blatantly lies.
You sigh and push past her with Kara not far behind.
“Hey!” You hear her call behind you.
You both ignore her and walk into Lena’s room.
“(YN)..? What are you- Kara?” She sits up.
“We’re here to get you out of here.” You state.
“How did you find m-”
“I gave her the address.” Kara interrupts.
Kara walks further into the room. “Whatever happens, we’ll figure it out, okay?”
“We’re stronger together.” You state.
You’re about to walk further into the room when you suddenly feel like there are pins and needles stabbing into your skin. You start feeling dizzy. The brunette drives the kryptonite knife into your flesh, but you knock it out of her hand before she can do an extensive amount of damage. Your hand grabs your side and you crawl over to Lena with the little strength you have.  Kara looks over at you and sees you falling and the green glow coursing through your veins.
“Shit… Alex, come in… Code green at the Luthor’s estate. Director Danvers, come in.” Kara mumbles into her earpiece.
By the time you’ve fallen unconscious, Lillian has started getting up. Luckily, Kara being on her toes 24/7, she sees it coming and throws a punch, hitting Lillian in the jaw hard enough to knock her out for the time being.
“What… what happened… Is she going to be okay? Kara… what do we do?” Lena panics, looking down at your unresponsive state.
Alex and a group of DEO agents show up in record time, containing Lillian and putting the Kryptonite weapon in a lead lined box. Alex walks into the room and sees you laying on the ground, green coursing through your veins.
“Shit… I thought it was yo-” She starts.
“It doesn’t matter, we need to get her to the DEO and under the sun lamp stat.” Kara commands.
Her sister nods and picks you up with the help of Jonn. You’re taken to the DEO with Lena and Kara following close behind.
~~~~~~~~~~~ℒ ~~~~~~~~~~~
“Your girlfriend is Kryptonian... “ Kara says, breaking the silence.
“How do you-” Lena begins saying.
“Kryptonite only has an affect on Kryptonians.”
“I was going to ask how you knew if she was my girlfriend, Ms. Danvers.” Lena chuckles, nudging her friend.
“OH… Well she risked everything, her identity and unknowingly risked her life for you…” Kara shrugs. Lena blushes at the statement. You hadn’t even gone on a first date, but she knew she was in love with you. You’re strong, powerful, physically and mentally… charming-
“Luthor… you okay there? You’re staring off.” Kara interrupts her thoughts.
“Yeah.” She smiles and looks down at her hands.
They pull into the DEO and get out. They’re informed that you have not awaken yet, but they want to be there when you do.
~~~~~~~~~~~ℒ ~~~~~~~~~~~
You jolt awake on the sunbed, not remembering where you are all too well.
“Hey hey hey. Calm down, you’re at the DEO. It’s okay.” Lena lays a hand on your shoulder.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt? Where’s Kara? Did they get your mother?” You babble.
“We’re all okay. Everyone is okay. My mother has been dealt with thanks to you.” She smiles.
You let out a sigh of relief. Kara walks in and smiles at you. You look at her Supergirl outfit and back up at her. She nods. “It’s me.”
You nod and you all sit there in silence.
“Guess I have some explaining to do…” You chuckle.
Kara stares at you and starts giggling.
“What the hell?” You laugh.
“You’re Kryptonian.” She giggles.
“Oh… No, I thought I was a white martian.” You say sarcastically.
“...You guys are weird.” Lena rolls her eyes.
You both shrug.
Alex walks in and informs you that she needs to run some tests on you and inspect the stab wound. You nod and let her do so.
“The wound should be healing soon due to the radiation of the sun bed, so I’ll have to ask you to stay here for another hour or so.” She smiles.
“Thank you, Ms. Danvers.”
She nods and smiles, stepping aside for Jonn to walk in.
“Ms. (y/n) Lar-El. Glad to see you awake.” He walks up to shake your hand.
“Pleasure to meet you..”
“Jonn.” He informs you.
“Pleasure to meet you, Jonn.” You smile.
“Same to you. I wanted to ask you if you’d be interested in training here. Maybe work alongside Supergirl and everyone here.” He asks.
“I uhm… I would be honored, sir.” You stutter.
He smiles and nods. “Ms. Danvers will speak do you about the details later, get some rest.”
He and Alex walk out. Due to your super hearing you hear Jonn quietly cheering and Alex chuckling. You and Kara both laugh slightly.
“Thank you by the way…” Lena smiles at you.
You smile at her softly and nod. “Always.”
She leans closer to your face, you can feel her breath on your lips. You lean forward and close the gap, earning a cheer from Kara. The kiss grows more heated and Kara takes that as her queue.
“I’m just gonna… go.” She says awkwardly, locking the door behind her.
You briefly hear Kara let out a faux gag followed by her mumbling, “I did not need to see that...”
You chuckle and pull away, staring into Lena’s eyes.
“Do you really want to do this here? We haven’t even gone on our first date yet, Ms. Luthor.” You smirk at her.
She desperately. You chuckle lowly. “Okay.”
“Okay.” She repeats.
She runs her hands through your coarse, curly locks and moves to straddle your hips.
To Lena: r u busy??? U didnt answer my calls. Dinner later?
To Lena: my place.
To Lena: Or yours! Can totally go to urs. If u want.
To Lena: Lena????
To Lena: where are u??
To Lena: Answer my calls
To Lena: Pls?
Kara rounds the corner of her hallway, keys bitten, dangling from her lips, as she types with both hands. Her 67th text message of the day to an MIA Lena Luthor sent. She fails to notice the creature lurking around the front of her door; dark fur shining under the cheap LED lights of Kara’s corridor.
She’s still deeply absorbed in her phone with worry, in the middle of jamming her keys in with one hand, when something furry brushes against her legs and Kara yelps.
She pulls the knob clean out of the wood in shock, her phone dropping to the floor loudly, the cat doing a duet with her with a startled yowl of her own.
Heart hammering and adrenaline racing, Kara looks down and sees the cat for the first time.
“Oh! Oh!” she gasps, “I didn’t see you there, buddy. I’m sorry for startling you!! I didn’t mean it.”
The door knob clatters loudly to the ground as it falls out of her grasp. And Kara sheepishly feels guilty for the hole in her door. But the cat meows loudly, catching her attention, as if in response to her apology.
She crouches down low, and reaches out a hand to touch the furball. She snaps a quick pic, sends it to Lena and pockets her phone.
To Lena: KITTY!!
“Oh, oh come here,” she coos, “where’s your collar? How’d you get here huh?”
The cat reminds her of Streaky. The first stray who ever took to her kindly. Although upon closer inspection, Kara realizes this one has striking emeralds for eyes, Streaky’s eyes were a more softer blue.
The cat surprisingly seems friendly, immediately leaning into Kara’s touch. Nosing at the inside of Kara’s wrist and it’s such a familiar gesture but she can’t seem to remember why.
And...oh, a small rumbling echoes through Kara’s palm!
Oh, they’re purring!
Kara doesn’t know how long she stays there crouched low exactly, but eventually, she stands up, takes her hand away, and picks up the damaged doorknob.
“Well, time for you to go home now, buddy,” she tells them, giving their head one last pat before dusting off her hands on her jacket.
“Go on, shooo. Shoo. Go home. I’m sure your human is looking for you.”
But the cat remains unmoving. It looks like they’ve decided to sit firmly in front of Kara’s doorstep, casually licking a paw, as if waiting for Kara to open her door.
“Are you actually waiting for me to open my door?” Kara makes a mental note to thank Rao that none of her neighbors can see her trying to hold a proper conversation with a cat.
“Look, kitty,” she says firmly, “I’m not your human.”
The cat just blinks owlishly at her. Eyes too green, too intelligent and-
Kara makes up her mind.
She turns her face skywards, takes a deep breath (This will probably backfire, she already knows. But she's always had a soft spot for strays.) and then she pushes her door wide open.
The cat races inside, cutting through Kara’s legs and almost tripping her.
“Well, somebody’s excited,” Kara mutters under her breath, she watches the cat head for her living room couch; watches as they pause all of a sudden, changes course and jumps onto Kara’s coffee table instead.
Where the cat then proceeds to knock down everything in close vicinity, even the picture frame of her and Lena together.
“Hey! No! Bad kitty-”
But the cat is already hopping down from her pedestal, landing on the frame directly.
And then things get weird.
The cat proceeds to stomp all over it, meows loud, like really loud; insanely loud for a cat their size.
Her paw seems to be almost pointing? At the other person in the frame.
“I-” Kara seems taken aback by the bizarre behavior, sure she knows cats are vastly different from dogs, but this…
This is just weird.
The cat’s meowing only seems to get louder.
How you land yourselves in these situations, Kara. I really just don’t know, at this point. She can almost hear Alex say.
“What are you- Are you- are you pointing? That’s- That’s Lena, yeah. That’s my best friend.”
At that, the cat seems to vibrate. They start clawing at Kara’s pant leg, meowing and meowing and meowing—
And then it hits her.
"-but it turns out that she’s a witch. And apparently, so am I."
The green, green eyes.
A pink nose nuzzling against her wrist.
“Lena?”
******
“Oh, Rao! Lena you’re a cat! What happened?! Oh, no, baby what did you do?”
Lena-
Lena The Cat—and okay, so she’s still wrapping her head around that one—just stays silent. She’s sitting on her lap, looking regal than any cat has any right to be. A judgmental look in her eyes.
Lena’s a cat. Cat’s can’t speak. Can’t answer Kara’s questions.
“Right. Sorry. Only meow,” Kara murmurs, embarrassed. For some reason even in cat form Lena manages to be intimidating.
“Okay so, uh d-does that mean you still understand me? Two meows for yes. One meow for no.”
Kara gets two meows.
“Okay, cool, cool. Great. You can still understand me, that's good.” Kara runs a hand down her spine, “Gosh, your fur is just so soft.”
She hears Lena give a small growl, body tensing, “Right. Right. Sorry. Not the time for pets.” Kara retracts her hand away.
“Uhm, so next question then, I guess? D-did you become a cat this morning? Were you testing out your uhm...gift?”
Lena meows twice. Kara nods, clenching and unclenching her fist underneath her chin. Fingers itching to run themselves through Lena’s soft fur again. Lena seems to sense this, and nuzzles her face into Kara’s hand, bumps against her repeatedly.
“Really?” Kara double-checks, giddy. If she were human Kara bets Lena would be rolling her eyes like she always does when Kara does something particularly dorky, but she just pushes her head firmer against Kara’s hand and meows twice.
“So uhm,” she starts, cautiously, noting Lena’s increasing purr, “is there like a spellbook for this or something? Something that can help you transform back?
Lena meows yes.
“Is it in The Tower or back at your place?”
There are no responses.
“Sorry, sorry lemme rephrase, is it in The Tower?”
She gets two consecutive meows.
Okay, to The Tower it is.
******
“Are you going to tell me why you’re cradling a cat in your cape or??” Alex raises a brow at her, a hand on her hip, left foot tapping impatiently. Her sister was heading out for the day, it looks like. It was just tough luck that Supergirl landed one minute before the elevator took Alex.
Crap. Now they have to explain. They didn’t talk about this. Lena still hasn’t told her if it was okay to tell people about her gift.
“I-I rescued it,” Kara says.
Well, that isn’t so far from the truth, right? She stares at the bundle in her arms, Lena the traitor staying silent all the while—green eyes shining all innocent at Kara.
Alex’s stares intensifies.
“From a tree,” Kara flounders, and Lena The Cat has the audacity to yawn, squirm and jump away from her arms. She lands gracefully, tail swishing up in the air and heads straight for the lab.
Alex eyes the cat suspiciously before turning back to Kara. She jabs a finger to her chest. “It better not have any fleas. It better not touch my training mat.”
“She won’t.”
Alex just shakes her head, rolls her eyes, grabs her helmet and walks to the elevator.
Before she goes though, Alex says, “You know, this is gonna sound weird, but I swear I think I saw that same cat slinking out of The Tower earlier this morning.”
“Alex, she’s literally a black cat. There are hundreds of black cats in the city.”
“You're being weirdly defensive about this. Why are you being weird?”
“I’m not.”
Alex seems like she wants to say more, but the elevator dings, and she’s never been more grateful that Kelly makes Alex pick her up from work. Alex huffs out breath, before conceding and disappearing into the lift.
******
The camera flash is what gets Kara busted.
But is it really her fault if she walked in on a cute kitty, hunched over, meowing adorably, trying to flip over the pages of a thick spellbook, with her teeny-tiny bean paws?
Lena hisses at her, teeth-bared and fur puffy.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. But you were just really, really, really cute okay?” She walks closer to the desk, carefully lifts a hand and scratches Lena behind the ear.
The hissing slowly devolves into purring, and Kara grins triumphantly. Lena lets herself be picked up after a few moments, Kara leafing through the pages for her.
“So, found anything yet?” She asks, cradling Lena close to her chest. A warm weight on Kara’s arms, and as much as she wants to get her real Lena back, she also isn’t too eager on giving up this version anytime soon. Then again, Kara thinks, it would be impossible for her to give up any version of Lena Luthor.
“Spell? Charm? Anything? Do you need to make a potion? Are we gonna get to make a potion? Oh, oh do you need a wand? Do you have a wa-”
Kara’s words get muffled as two black paws press against her lips. Lena’s green eyes narrowing at her. She meows at Kara. Loudly.
“Mkay, mkay. Shut up. Got it.”
Lena removes her paws, and Kara makes a gesture of zipping her lips together. This seems to appease Lena enough because the next second, a pink tongue darts out and she...licks Kara's nose.
“Did you- did you just lick me?” Kara gasps out.
Lena doesn’t even acknowledge her with a meow, just turns away and jumps out of her arms again. Before Kara can do anything about it though, her phone rings.
The screen lighting up with Andrea’s name.
“Danvers, I’ve got a story for you.”
******
“Alex, please, I’ll be quick. I promise. I’ll only be three hours at the most. Please just look after her,” she pleads, pouting and puppy eyes in full power.
It also helps that the cat burrito in her cape looks to be cooperating. Lena The Cat staring at Alex with wide round eyes.
Apparently, some governor was found dead downtown, and now Andrea wants her on the scene. She can’t just leave Lena all alone in The Tower. No matter how hard Lena’s been protesting, this is brand new territory for both of them. Nobody knows the extent of Lena’s powers.
Point is, Kara would feel a lot better if she were to leave Lena under the care of someone she trusts. Even if said someone, accuses Lena of being a stray with fleas. It's still better than leaving Lena all on her own.
“Ugh.” Alex groans and Kara knows she’s won. “If this cat causes trouble I will throw it out the window, Kara.”
“No!” Kara yells, distressed. “Don’t do that. She’ll behave. She promises.”
She puts her hand under Lena’s arms and raises her up to eye level—Simba style. “You promise to be good for Alex, don’t you?”
All she gets is a lot of squirming and screaming, there were also a lot of attempts at scratching Kara’s nose.
“See?” Kara says, chuckling nervously. “She’s telling you she’s good.”
Alex looks skeptical, her arms crossed against her chest.
Kara sets her down on the couch, and crouches down low.
She tries to pet her head, but Lena bites at her finger, she catches her teeth on the skin of her supersuit’s thumb slot. She bites deeper, her teeth accomplishing nothing but a few dents.
And oh, Rao she thinks she’s such a feral little cat but her pink adorable gummy snarl says otherwise.
“I’m sorry, I’ll be back. I promise,” she whispers, careful not to let Alex hear. “And then we’ll figure it out later, okay? The safest place for you right now is to be with Alex.”
She really doesn’t want to go, and based on Lena’s protests she doesn’t want Kara to go either. But well, Andrea had finally threatened to fire her if she disobeyed...which is...fair.
She’s aware she’s been doing a less than stellar job at being a journalist lately. Rao, what an understatement. This is basically her make it or break it.
“Look, I’ll be quick, promise. Be good to Alex,” Kara murmurs. She presses a kiss on Lena’s furry forehead. Lena finally unclenches her jaw and lets Kara go. The little whine she lets out, letting Kara know that she knows the battle’s lost.
“Both of you, be good,” Kara tells them sternly. “Alex, please don’t yeet my cat out of the window.”
Alex shrugs, staring at the cat with suspicion. “I make no promises.’
Lena is staring at Alex just as hostile. Great. They both deserve each other.
Kara sighs exasperatedly. Well, at least she tried.
******
She gets a very angry Alex Danvers on the line, right after she’s finished talking to some sources. It’s nighttime now, and when she checks her watch—yep, she’s left Lena in Alex’s care for more than six hours.
Crap.
“Hey, Al—”
“KARA IF YOU DON’T PICK UP THIS THIS THIS GODDAMNED HAIRBALL RIGHT NOW, YOU WILL NEVER SEE IT EVER AGAIN.”
There is loud meowing, and then, “What the- Get off! Get off me right no-”
The line clicks dead.
Kara Danvers quickly changes into an alley, manages to break the sound barrier.
******
It’s Kelly who opens the door.
“Hey, Kara,” she greets her. Kara is impatiently rocking on her heels, trying to peer past Kelly’s shoulders.
The place was quiet; ridiculously quiet, and Kara feels fear swoop in her belly.
“Please, tell me my cat is still alive,” Kara bursts out, Kelly just gives her a pained smile and oh, no, oh no.
She muscles her way past Kelly to a brooding Alex on the couch.
Lena is nowhere to be seen.
“Alex, Alex where’s my cat? Where is she? Where did you put her?”
Alex finally looks up at her, Kara taking notice of the red marks on her arm.
Oh no, Lena, what did you do?
“Calm down, I didn’t throw the little demon away. She’s-" Alex sing-songs before finishing, "on time-out.”
“Time-out?” Kara asks, voice shaking. Rao, does she really want to know.
Alex takes too long to answer, taking a swig of her beer first before pointing to a corner in the living room.
And there, she spots it.
It, being a small pile of laundry on the floor, next to an upside down hamper. A big white hamper housing one Lena Luthor. There's a crude cardboard sign stuck on it; "Kitty Jail". Alex has also stacked a few encyclopedia on top of it, no doubt an attempt to keep Lena from escaping.
“Oh! Oh, Lena!”
Kara superspeeds her way and scoops Lena up, the cat meowing immediately and curling into Kara’s chest.
“You named the cat after Lena?!”
Crap.
Kara turns around slowly, “Uhm yeah?”
Alex just shakes her head. “Unbelievable.”
“Her eyes reminded me of Lena, okay?!” Kara yells defensively, pressing tiny kisses onto Lena’s fur.
“I’m sorry that Alex has been such a meanie to you," she coos, "I know you didn’t deserve it, baby."
Alex seems to perk up at that, because she raises up from the couch. “That,” Alex jabs a finger in their direction, Kara cradles Lena protectively, “That baby ruined my couch and she so totally deserves all the mean! All the mean in the world, Kara!”
Lena hisses in her arms.
“No, no. That’s not true. Lena is baby and she’s perfect and you’re just a meanie.”
“She ruined my upholstery! She left hair all over the place and that’s not even to mention the scratching!”
“Because you were mean to her!”
Alex scoffs, eyes bulging wide in disbelief.
“Get out,” Alex says, her brows pinching comically, “Get out of my apartment before that little devil causes more damage.”
“Gladly,” Kara says, and Lena meows her assent. They make their way past Alex, Kara unaware that Lena has stuck out her little tongue at Alex over her shoulder.
“And she’s not a little devil!” Kara calls out.
Alex slams the door in her face.
******
That evening, Kara pores over a thick spellbook, eyes swimming with Latin symbols with a purring machine on her lap.
By midnight, Kara has managed to pass out on her couch, a black cat curled on her chest.
The spellbook lay open on her coffee table, forgotten.
******
The first sight that greets Kara when she wakes up are green eyes.
Green human eyes.
And then it hits her.
“Lena!”
The spell had blessedly wore off by morning, and Kara’s never been more glad to see the sunlight lighting up Lena’s face.
For a moment, Kara’s assaulted with the mental image of laying in a pool of sunlight with a black cat stretching leisurely next to her.
“Good morning,” Lena purrs, and oh Rao, that sound is much, much better than her meowing.
“You’re back!” Kara gasps in awe.
“I’m back,” she whispers, she’s still draped fully over Kara on the couch. A blanket covering them both.
“Rao, I missed you.” A palm comes up to cup her cheeks, Lena automatically nuzzling into the inside of her wrist.
“Mm, I missed me, too,” Lena tells her, face breaking into a small smile. Kara traces her fingers up and down Lena’s spine. Oh, how she’s missed touching Lena’s skin.
Wait-
Skin.
Is she-
“Lena,” Kara begins, swallowing. Her nerves not going unnoticed.
Lena raises a brow at her. “Kara?”
“Are you- uhm- ah. Are you naked right now?”
Lena’s eyes light up like a cat’s and Kara knows she’s in trouble.
“Mm. It seems that I am,” Lena says, and all Kara can do is gulp.
“What are you gonna do about it?”
Previously on the series - Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
Whatever it cost.
Your life has been put at stake before. You almost died three or four times. Honestly, too much for a 16-year-old-girl. But this. This is different. There’s no aunt Alex to call for help, no Supergirl coming in to help you pick up the pieces. No Lena waiting for you at home with comfort hugs and donuts.
You land on the DEO, shaking. You thought about not coming the entire way here. What if you just wait until Supergirl wakes up so she can help? Would it be that bad?
“Brainy!” You call him, and he turns around to you. Tablet in hands, still monitoring the shapeshifters. “Can we wait until my momma wakes up? Then we can go for them. I mean, I didn’t see much damage around the city so-”
“We can’t.” He stops you.
“Why? Honestly, we both know I’m no match for a shapeshifter.” You say, and Brainy looks up from his tablet.
“Oh.” He smiles a little. “That’s what I’m counting on.”
“I’m sorry?” But it doesn’t take long until you tie all the knots. Of course. Of course you couldn’t trust anybody!
Brainy turns into Supergirl right in front of your eyes, and hits you with a blow of freeze breath that throws you back down. You fall, all fours, and look up to the shapeshifter in front of you.
“You are definitely not a match for us.” It presses something in the tablet and soon you hear a woosh of air coming from containment and landing a punch on your face.
Shit! Fuck! Damn it!
It played you just right! Made you believe that you could trust ‘Brainy’ because he found your family, and imprisoned one of the shapeshifters, but it was obviously just a plan. Now both are here in front of you, and if one was already hard enough, two looks impossible to beat.
You get up and fly out of the DEO. First superhero rule: if possible, take the fight to where no civilians can get hurt, so you will have less casualties. In this case, maybe just yours is enough.
The other two Supergirls fly right behind you. You feel one of them grabbing your feet and tossing you back to the ground. You fly up less than a palm before your body hits the concrete. You keep flying farther away from the city, but it’s forced to stop sooner than you would like.
One of the Supergirls punches you down, and you feel your body smashing against a boulder in the desert, making a hole on the hard rock. Dust rises up and around you. You cough, getting up from the hole and you look at both aliens in front of you, using your momma’s pretty face. You can’t win. You wouldn’t be able to win even if you were up against just one Supergirl, let alone two. You breathe deep. You were right. Two Kryptonians are better than one. You just wish this advantage were to your side.
“So, it was you all along.” You yell from a distance.
“I told you not to trust anyone.” You hear Kara’s voice and your heart beats faster. “But I suppose you are just a kid.”
“I am.” You agree with your head, taking a deep breath. “But I am her kid!”
You fly towards them, punching one in the face, making it fall in the hard rock, like you did, breaking it off in the process. But you won’t give it a chance of recovery. You fly down, settling on top of its body. Kara’s body.
“You don’t deserve this face!” You say, giving it another punch. “You don’t deserve these powers!” Another one. “You don’t deserve to wear this crest on your chest!” It’s where you punch after and you watch the alien losing its breath, looking as beat up as you found your momma. You raise your fist again, ready to end it, and feel the other alien grabbing your hand.
“What makes you think you do?” It says, flying high with you, while you try to untangle yourself from its firm grip. When you look up again, it has changed its form. You’re face to face with yourself.
“I’m not a phony!” You twist around, and it drops your hand, kicking you in the chest instead. You fly far away, trying to regain your breath. “But now it’s a fair fight.”
“Is it?” It asks, tilting its head at you. You look at your face staring at yourself on the other side and smile. Yes. Now it’s a fair fight. You know your strengths, and you know your weaknesses. And you have so many of them.
It flies closed fist at you, but you saw it coming, it’s always your first move. You fly out of the way, hitting its back with your heat vision, making it fall on the ground, raising up dirt all around it.
“You can’t win.” Supergirl gets up from the hole it was in. Oh, come on, it was almost gone. You use your heat vision again, but it’s met in the middle with its own heat vision. Shit, this is useless. Fighting Kryptonians it’s a fucking hell.
The other alien rises from the ground, and you see yourself between both of them. You don’t have a lot of options, it’s clear to you. You can run, but where to? You can buy yourself time, but for what? Help isn’t coming, you know that.
“We shouldn’t both waste our time with this kid.” Fake Supergirl says, almost ignoring your presence right there between them. “You know where she took them. Go get them.”
Breath stops midway. Heart stops mid beat. Time slows at its own accord.
No. Not them. Not your family.
“Oh yes, we should thank you, by the way.” The other Superkid flies to Supergirl’ side, and your eyes are filled with tears with the sight of that. You wanted that. You wanted a Superkid and Supergirl team-up. Instead, two monsters are using your faces, bodies and powers. They don’t seem to acknowledge your discomfort with the scene, as they go on.
“Getting the whole family together in one place. You just made our job a lot easier. Now we can kill Supergirl and everyone she loves in just one blow. And you? You’ll be alive to see it all going down with your help.”
You swallow hard knowing they are right. You helped. You thought you were the one doing the saving, but they were letting you. They were playing you, so you can do the job for them and that’s why it felt so easy. That’s why you encountered almost no resistance; it was all for this moment right here.
It’s your fault Lena has no memories. It’s your fault Jamie was taken. It’s your fault Supergirl is not here defending the city and the family. And now it will be your fault they’ll kill all your family in one blow.
You feel something burning inside of you. It’s not anger, it’s not sadness. It’s a mix of all the feelings you once had. It’s the slow burn of love, and the heavy taste of hate on your mouth. It’s the bittersweetness of having such a strong and rotten last name, and the wonderfulness of being a part of this family. It’s the cautiousness of hiding your powers, and the relentless yearn of letting go and bursting into flames, destroying everything and everyone on your way. But most of all, it’s that moment where ‘you should do better’ kicks the ‘you’re doing great’ to the side of the curbs and takes a hold on you.
You could even try to hold this feeling inside you, but you know better. This is the time to stop thinking, stop using your powers, and let them use you instead.
“Don’t thank me just yet.” You say with a little smile playing on your lips.
Fighting two of them was never going to be a fair fight and you know it. Even with you letting your powers take over you, even after beating them, even with this faintest feeling that you might -just might- pull this off because you’re fighting for the right reasons.
It doesn’t take long until you find yourself trapped under both getting punches after punches. The taste of blood is strong on your mouth. You know you’re going to lose. You’re minutes away from blacking out.
You have been beaten down before. By red kryptonite Kara, by villains using green kryptonite against you, by aliens from another dimension, by your own fears and your anxiety. You were once beaten down to the point of suffocation. You were once covered in your own blood and vomit. For time and time again, you thought you were going to die. Once you even prayed that you would.
This moment right here, feels like another one of those. You can feel it. When they’re beating you down so hard your blood is the one splashing on their faces, when you slowly feel yourself losing consciousness. When the last thing you see before your mind goes totally blank is Lena’s eyes and Kara’ smile. Maybe this is the last time you feel you are going to die. Maybe this time you’re actually dying.
And you know what comes next. They’ll go to the Fortress. March in there using your face. It’s your face your family is going to see blowing up the entire place. And when they realize it’s not you, it will be too late, they will be doomed. Your whole family will be destroyed like they promised in the message.
You won’t accept it. You may die, but your family won’t.
You untangle yourself from them. Grab Supergirl’s cape -capes are lame, you still remember that- and fly up. Up. Up. Up. The other shapeshifter follows you, trying to catch you before you do what they understand now it’s going to happen.
“If you do this, you will die!” You hear Kara’s voice. But it’s not her, and you know your Kara would do anything to protect her family. Anything.
“I don’t care if it kills me. All I care about is taking you down with me!” You say and you reach the exact point. You know if you keep going, you’ll be too far gone. You almost died in outer space once. You don’t know exactly how you survived, but you know this time you can’t pull it off again.
You hold Supergirl’s cape stronger and spin it around. You see the shapeshifter trying to change its form, but it’s too late. You toss it into space and look down to the other one.
“Two Superkids dying in outer space together is almost… Poetic.” You fly towards the other shapeshifter, the one with your face.
“You don’t want to do this.” It says, staring at you, like it's looking at your soul.
“You’re right, I don’t.” You grab its throat and look up. “But it’s whatever it costs!”
Up. Up. Up.
No air left in your lungs, no other thought except that this is the right thing. Dying was never going to feel right but dying for your family, it’s the closest you could ever feel to death being right.
The other you are now transformed back into its ugly alien form, turning blue. They’re gone. It’s over.
You close your eyes feeling light-headed and you feel like crying. It doesn’t matter if it’s the right thing or if it’s for your family, you still don’t want to die, and you’ll still miss them.
You know this won’t matter. But maybe, just maybe, the watch will send them a signal and Kara will come for your body when she wakes up. That way they can mourn you properly. All of them, but Lena since she doesn’t even remember you anymore. At least she won’t suffer, you think. You press the emergency watch. And you’re out.
“Will you please stop going to outer space?” You hear softly in your ear, and you open your eyes trying to focus them on what is before you. Blonde locks flying in the wind, a perfect baby blue sky over you, and that warm smile only one person in this universe has. “I’ve got you, little one. You’ve got me before; I’ve got you now.”
You smile. And before passing out again you think that you have to stop almost dying. It’s starting to get truly exhausting.
You open your eyes, looking around to make sure you actually didn’t die. It’s stupid, you know, but still you find it’s hard to believe you pulled it off. Somehow you pulled it off.
Alex is in the bed next to you, awake, finally. Brainy is also in a bed, the real one that was probably hurt by the shapeshifters so one of them could take his place. Kara is pacing around nervously, and the rest of the family are also in the infirmary, creeping around the sick ones.
“You fucking dipshit!” Jamie slaps your arm, and you almost feel the sting. “I told you to come back. You promised you would come back whatever it costs!”
“Well… I’m here.” You give her a little smile and she rolls her eyes, full of tears. Next thing you know, she is hugging you tight, and sobbing on your suit.
“I hate you.” She whispers in your ear, and you smile, while the whole family looks at both of you. “I hate you and your hero complex.”
“I love you too.” You smile and she lets go of you with a smile. Kara is the next one to throw her arms around you and kiss your temple.
“You’re the best superhero in this town.” She says, and you almost believe her. Almost.
“Mom.” You let go of Kara and look around in the room. “Where is she?”
They all stare at you blankly. No one says a thing.
“Where is Lena?” You demand, and Kara drops her head low and lets out a sigh.
“We’re gonna get her back, kid.” Her hand cups your face, and she strokes your cheek. You see the pain in her eyes, and you feel tears forming on yours. “One thing at a time.”
Your heart squeezes on your chest, and you forget about the fact that you were probably actually dead for at least a minute, not long ago. This doesn’t seem remotely important, as Lena not having her memories and not knowing who you are right now. You almost died, and your mom is not here to hold you gently and say, ‘you’re ok babygirl’.
Kara seems to be able to read your mind, like Lena usually does, when she puts her hand on your knee and gives it a gentle and assuring squeeze. “One thing at a time, baby.”
The smell of fries and burgers invaded your nose as you sat on the floor, glancing at your sore hand. Your legs extended on the floor as you held your head against the column of the place. The uncomfortable ache on your hand had seemed to increase by the second, as you sat down.
Confusion was the main thing in your head, the confused heavy feeling in your chest when you close your eyes, the twisted and ached void confusing you when reality sets in. It felt like a war between your mind and heart that neither of the two you understand. It felt like the reasons that your brain had were now gone, the reason part of feeling nonexistent.
“Didn't think I would see you so soon” You claimed when you felt the presence of the brunette behind you. Two bags in her hand as the archer sat beside you.
Thea replied teasingly, and flirtatiously grabbing fries from her bag, after hitting you softly in the shoulder. “Neither did I, princess”
“Thanks” You whispered as you started to eat, both of you sharing a knowing and somewhat comforting. The Queen woman smiled and kept silent giving you a nod.
Thea had known you for a long time, but not until three years ago she saw you as her older brother’s best friend. She and Talia had taught every skill, you needed and wanted to learn. She had seen you put all of your anger everywhere you could. You were there subtly with alcohol after every break-up and make-up she had with Roy, showing your care as you sat with her drinking in silence until she couldn't anymore.
The small creek sound of the door took both of your attention. Your mother stood silently with a white medical kit in her hand and an understanding expression on her face. You glanced at the brunette beside you, meeting her glance. A small spark in her eyes which you had never noticed before, you stopped in your way to comment on it when you heard the knowing clearing throat of your Mother.
“Can I come in?” The Queen woman smiled reassuringly before leaving the room. Your mother stood at the side of the door, watching curiously and carefully before speaking.
You looked up and met her eye glance, giving her a small nod as you spoke almost inaudible. “Sure”
Your mother had been making the small notes, and remainders when she saw you. She couldn't lie about the fact that her heart joined in joy and broke in less than 24 hours. It had been difficult to maintain a straight face when your oldest sister called her explaining the situation, letting her know and Jeremiah that after days of trying, they were the last option to bring some feelings to you.
She saw your father way too comfortable yet nervous when they got the news, the trip had been too questioning and secretive that she suspected something had happened with the two of you. But seeing you with her own eyes as you stood in the room with void eyes, and rage protecting your walls.
The complete silence from your party told her more than you knew. The isolation, the hidden pain, the calm and silence. It all reflected in one thing and it was you trying to understand your feelings, your world, yourself. It had happened when your dad had supposedly died. The heavy feeling in her chest grew as she sat beside you, while you stared at the wall quietly debating with your thoughts and feelings.
Flashback - February 2005
You sat in the backyard of the house, dressed in black attire. Your eyes watching over the waves as they ended in the sand. The way the breeze moved the palms and softly touched your face. Your hands gripping the blanket covering you.
You waited for everything to process in, you waited to wake up, you waited for him as you walked down the stairs that morning, you waited for your sisters to tell you it was a lie, you waited for your mom to serve his favorite lasagna as he came back home, you waited for the sound of cheer when he and your oldest sister finished repairing another part of the old car, you waited for him and Kara coming back from the forest at night after watching the stars, you waited for him to sit on the small bean bag of your bedroom as you played him something new in your instruments, you waited for the loud laughs and scolds that would come after you and your sisters would create an eating contest ending with Kara smiling proudly as you and Alex throw up, you waited for the ‘pizza and tacos night’ where the five of you somehow cooked without burning the kitchen down, ending with a marathon of movies and smiles on everyone faces. But it never came.
The distinct voices from the house gained your attention as they felt closer. You closed your eyes, trying to focus on the sound of the waves failing in the attempt. Turning around to see both of your sisters standing side by side as one of your family members expressing their condolences to them. Kara seemed to keep it together as she nodded shyly, while Alex clenched her jaw giving a small thanks before walking away, your blonde sister watched the redhead walk away before looking at the floor excusing herself too.
You looked away back to the beach, before deciding to get up and walk down the small hill entering the beach. Taking off your shoes, you put them at the side of the beach entrance before wrapping the blanket tightly around you. The voices began to zoom out and the sound of the ocean began to fill your ears. The soft sand on your feet as you walked closer to the shore felt grounding. The soft breeze that moved your hair out of control felt comforting as you sat down.
Burying your feet in the sand as you closed your eyes trying to remember something, to have something to hold on to. It felt weird, out of place, like something was missing. Your mind tried to wrap up with the fact that your father was dead but even if you knew what was happening, you still had questions. Sitting on the sand, you stared blankly at the ocean, as the waves came, as the breeze moved the palms and touched your cheeks, as the soft salty smell invaded your nose, and the coldness of the day began to increase.
It was like a debate between what you wanted to believe and what was happening. There were running thoughts in your head that made you feel exhausted. It was unpleasant and even tiring to think of how this event would change your and your family's life. You avoided the thought as much as you could, wishing and hoping to wake up from the nightmare but it was real and as much as you didn't want to accept it, your father was gone, and he was not coming back.
You didn't even realize when the sun that was high in the sky had come down and reflected in the ocean, you didn't feel the breeze and air get heavier or the way the only thing illuminating the night was the light bulb you dad put at the entrance of the beach.
It felt like time went in seconds, long seconds that you wished to take back and at the same time to move faster. It wasn't easy, it didn't feel easy, and the hole in your heart was unmistakable. You weren't a person who liked change, nor a person who easily understood what was going on around you.
Sure when Kara came into the family, it was like the missing piece. It didn't take you long to warm up to the blonde, but she was suffering from the loss of her planet so you stayed behind the doors and waited the right moment to comfort her and make her as welcome as you could. You saw her hesitate when she was doing something that would make her happy, you saw her doubt herself as Superman came into the news, you saw her shed tears when she tried to find where Krypto would be.
You tried constantly to win her affection, her trust, her intelligence, and more but you couldn't make her happy if she didn't heal. So you stayed awake during the night waiting to comfort her, you played with melodies on the piano so she could have a similar bed song as she had in Krypto, you ran as fast as you could after school to help her with her English or to watch and sing along with Wizard of Oz. You keep trying and trying even though she was legally your sister, you wanted to have a connection with her just like you did with Alex. So when the blonde the morning of your birthday hugged you and in English told you, you were her sister and she could be prouder than to call you that, you shredded in tears hugging her closely.
But it was different, everything was different, it felt different, it sounded different, it even tastes different. There was a silence between your family, Alex kept her feelings inside and bottle them in trying so hard not to break, mad at the world, mad at dad, at you, at your mom, even Kara. Your mom was understanding but quiet, she tried to be your and your sister's rock during the day but at night you can hear her crying her heart out. Kara kept silent, mad at the world for taking another person from her, holding you close trying to be helpful as much as she could even if she was hurting as much as she was when she first landed. And you, you kept quiet, trying to understand, trying to find the lie, trying to reach and understand your feelings but couldn't. So you waited for the time to pass by and for things to get in order, just like your dad used to say ‘time heals things, everything gets better with time’ but as the words rounded your head you couldn't feel more than the biggest lie of the world.
Flashback ends
The soft wrap with alcohol against your knuckles ached as your mom determinately disinfected your hand. You felt her eyes constantly glancing at you when you kept silent, trying to ignore the slight throb from the small wound in your hand. You glanced from the wall you stared continuously into her eyes, before speaking. “I tried”
“I know sweetie” Eliza looked up while finishing wrapping her hand before speaking in a motherly tone. As soon as she heard you talk she knew, she knew what you meant. Just your silence gave it away, she knew your conflicted feelings weren't going to help now and they didn't before, but what scared her was how long you were going to take to heal, to flash a familiar smile, to laugh until you couldn't anymore, to look at the eyes of your significant other, to sign with your older sisters until either of your throats wouldn't give more.
Fighting back the tears your eyes had swollen, you claimed again making eye contact with your mother, your mother's eyes redating with comfort and sadness as she looked at you. You clenched your hand into a fist but immediately opened it again when you felt the strong throb in your knuckles. “I tried, and it didn't work out. It didn't do anything”
“Healing isn't about not feeling sad or feeling numb, it's about letting in, letting go, and finding yourself again but you can't do it if you are not ready for it” She answered brushing a strand of your hair behind your ear.
And the understanding in her eyes and voice made you doubt, as your feelings started to fall in place. Heartache, anger, sadness, disappointment, pain, and more began to feel your chest and your mind as you took the words of your mother in. Your now bloodshot eyes looked away from her as you felt your lip tremble.
You nodded quietly, and before you knew. You threw your arms around your blonde mother, tears furiously leaving your eyes as she soothed you, with comforting and reassuring words. Your head was hidden in her neck as you cried your eyes out.
The feeling of heartbreak and pain overwhelming you as everything started to come down on you. And you wanted to cry, for minutes, for hours, days, weeks, even years. Because somehow after everything you still didn't feel enough, you felt everything you did was wrong, that you could have been better and you could have changed differently, closing your eyes you wished for it to be gone, but deep down you knew it wasn't.
“Please just make it stop, mom. Please, it hurts so much”
Flashback - February 2005
“Please just make it stop, mom. Please, it hurts so much”
You don't know how it happened or how long you had been furiously crying until you stared at the small seashells in the sand getting wet thanks to your tears. The once beige shell now was white. Grabbing the seashells from the sand, you started to throw them angrily at the water.
The sound of the rock making contact with the water somewhat comforted you, longing to throw everything away for it, for the broken shells to absorb your problems and leave with it. Soon enough you fell to your knees sobbing out. As the night lighting shot in the ocean, as the ocean tide had gone up, the once breeze became violent air.
One second you were crying furiously on your own, and the next you sobbed into your mother's arms, as she reassured you that everything was going to be okay. You gripped her shirt hugging her closely before looking up to her, touching your chest as your bloodshot eyes glanced in hers.
Your lip trembling from the cold and your sobs, her heart broke, even more, when you hid in her neck which made her look up as she soothed your back. She was trying so hard to keep it together for you and your sisters but the moment she caught sight of Kara and Alex with blankets around themselves walking straight to where the two of you sat, made her break into tears.
You looked up from your mother's neck as you felt a hand rubbing your back and others grabbing your hand softly in reassurance. Each one of them by you and your mother's side, your cries had slowed down when your redhead sister asked with a crack in her voice to your mother. “Are we gonna be okay?”
“Yeah, we will be but it will take time to heal, we can't rush it, we have to be ready”
“We are going to be okay” Kara claimed as a statement of reassurance after your mother responded, but her trembling lip, bloodshot eyes, and the high tone she used made her sound more like a prayer than anything.
Your mother reassured, making you three nod slowly before falling into a reassuring silence. “Until then we have each other, and one of the most precious things you girls are going to have in your life is each other, your family.”
Flashback ends
Unknowingly to you, your sisters had been watching from the door the moment Kara heard your heart spike. Tears in their eyes as they watched your mother rocked you slowly as you cried. Silent sobs and bitten lips coming from them as they stopped each other from walking into the room.
Alex kept her jaw clenched as her hands gripped each other hard as she tried to keep the tears inside. The redhead felt responsible for your crying, the urge to run in and comfort you debating her self-control. Doubts, questions, and more gained in her head as she saw you sob into your mother's arms, rage slowly consuming her emotions as the protectiveness over you began to show up.
Kara let out silent sobs, with her hand on top of her mouth. Her bloodshot eyes and red cheeks had overwhelming tears. The superheroine hated herself, as she felt responsible for your crying. She just wanted to hold you in her arms and tell you everything was going to be just fine, she wanted to see your sunny smile when you saw her or the bad jokes and puns you used all the time, she wanted you, she wanted her little sister but a part of her told her you needed the same space she once received from you.
The two of them standing next to each other with broken hearts and tears in their eyes, a small sense of hope in their chest as they watched the scene. Sharing a knowing, Alex came closer putting her arm around your blonde sister’s shoulder before speaking.
“Everything is gonna be okay, we are getting her back, I promise,” She said quietly reassuring Kara even when neither of them fully believe it.
Pairings: Lena Luthor x Reader
Tags: Violence, Injuries, Fluff, Humor, Wanting
Thirty-eight. That’s how many hits were put on Lena since the press conference. That had been a month ago and since then it had been thirty…eight...hits. Your shoulder was still tender from taking the bullet for her prior and you had barely cleared the hospital before someone made, yet, another attempt on her life.
You had just got done beating someone unconscious when the fatigue hit you hard. You slowly sank to the floor, lying on your back with your limbs spread eagle, and one arm draped across your face as sweat dripped down your body. Everything was starting to take its toll on you, and your body was littered with old and new wounds. You had a cut in your eyebrow and a busted lip. Every time you inhaled, there was a weird throbbing in your ribs. Your leg was all jacked up. Your knuckles were bloodied and raw, and as you flexed your hand you could feel the joints crack painfully. In simple terms, a bitch needed to lie down. Lena watched the scuffle from the corner of the room, inspecting you with worry once her assailant was dealt with.
“How do you manage to get anything done with your head on the executioner’s block?” you wheezed, completely out of breath. She was about to answer when you interrupted her.
“Sorry but follow up question. How come so many people want you dead???”
Not to be a complete wimp, but you were on the verge of actual tears. This month bent you over and made you it’s bitch. And it didn’t even have the decency to buy you dinner first. And feasibly, you knew that you couldn’t put a price on someone’s life, but your insurance was one more injury claim away from kicking you off entirely.
Lena nibbled her teeth as she contemplated whether or not to tell you the truth. “To be fair, most of these were from my mother…”
That made you bolt upright, despite the dizzying head rush you felt and the intense throb from your chest.
“YOUR MOTHER???” you screeched, your voice going several octaves higher. Lena nodded meekly, her expression a grimace.
Lena was already use to this. It would be weirder if her mother didn’t send someone to kill her. It had become such a normal part of her routine, that it completely slipped her mind to tell you. Even after the first 37 times someone was sent after her, it still never occurred to Lena to say something.
You groaned as you wiped you hands down your face. You didn’t care that you were smudging blood all over, and at this point, you didn’t even know who it belonged to.
“This is more than what you bargained for, huh?” Lena asked and even though you weren’t looking at her, you could hear how sad she sounded.
“No! No, it’s not that,” you said quickly though she still looked skeptical. “It’s just that, it sounds like most of this needs to be settled in family therapy.”
Lena laughed, her face instantly lighting up at your joke and you smiled.
“How can I help Y/n?”
You stood to your feet, slightly limping due to the injury on your leg.
“In all seriousness Lena, is there someplace we can lay low? For just 24 hours?”
Lena thought about it before she smiled. “I do know of a place but J’onn won’t be too happy.
***
Lena took you to the DEO and if your jaw could’ve hit the floor, it would have. You had absolutely no idea that Lena had connections like this, though she frequently worked with Supergirl. So, maybe it should have been easy to put two and two together. You were met with curious stares from the agents, and it looked like no one was going to question you being here until a quizzical guy with slicked back, black hair and curious brown eyes piped up.
“Who is she?” he asked. It wasn’t rude, and the question was well deserved considering you were deep in a government base, but it still made you defensive as all the attention was now diverted to you.
“Brainy, this is my bodyguard, Y/n.”
You offered a small wave which he returned with a nod of his head. Then he furrowed his eyebrows together as he held his hands behind his back.
“Lena, do you realize that your companion requires medical assistance?”
This was news to you and you’re wondering how the hell he knew that. As far as you knew cuts and bruises didn’t warrant a doctor’s visit. Though you were about to refuse, Lena responded before you got the chance.
“I know. I need to find Alex.”
The man nodded before pointing his chin down the hall.
“She’s in the infirmary.”
Lena led you down the aforementioned hallway and when you turned the corner, you see a red-haired woman with a stethoscope treating the one and only Supergirl.
“Lena?” the blue-eyed heroine asked in surprise. The redhead was about to greet her as well when her eyes caught up to you.
“What is she doing here?”
You wanted to roll your eyes. You’d already been through this and you were about to say it when pain exploded in your chest. Tears came to your eyes as you gripped your sides, feeling like someone was sawing off your ribs off with a butter knife. Before anyone had the chance to do or say anything, you were falling forward. You’re surprised when you didn’t hit the ground. Strong hands held you up and you found yourself staring into the red insignia of Supergirl’s suit.
“Alex, she needs help please. I’ll explain later.”
“Alright, Supergirl,” Alex said, acquiescing to Lena while giving Supergirl the okay to look you over.
Her brown eyebrows furrowed in concentration and you realized that she was using her x-ray vision on you. She frowned before she immediately picked up and placed you gently on a bed.
“She has several fractured ribs and a sprain in her ankle. All of the cuts are superficial but the healing bullet hole in her shoulder may need to be looked at again. Also, her knuckles need to be iced badly.”
Lena’s mouth fell open wide. “Y/n how did you not notice any of this???”
“To be fair, everything hurts all over,” you groaned with a smile playing at your lips.
Lena smiled and watched as Alex inserted a needle into the crook of your arm. Lena rested her hand onto your forehead, being extra careful to not agitate your wounds further. You sighed into her warm touch. It was like an anchor in a sea of agony, and you couldn’t help but lean into her more.
“I’ll see you on the other side,” Lena murmured just before you fell into a peaceful sleep.
***
As Alex got to work on wrapping you up in gauze, Lena volunteered to clean and dress your open wounds. While she wasn’t a doctor, she did learn a thing or two just from hanging out with the super friends. She was gingerly cleaning your lip when Kara came up to her and nudged her shoulder with her own.
“Hey.”
Lena smiled at her and then focused on her task at hand. “Hey.”
“You should ask her out.”
Lena froze, her face briefly morphing from fear to a neutral expression. If it had been anybody else, they would have missed it, but Kara saw it as clear as day.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Lena may have said the sentence with nonchalance, but her heart was racing. Kara smiled softly, her blue eyes bright and understanding as she looked over your sleeping form.
“You’re allowed to get close to someone, Lena. And she is pretty cute.”
That much Lena had to concede to. Alex had to undress you to get to your ribs, and it gave Lena an eyeful of the muscles that adorned your body. She loved your sarcastic nature and loved how funny you were even when you were beating someone senseless. She wanted to ask you out, but there was a small problem with her family. Kara watched as Lena’s fond smile turned somber and she sighed as she stopped her ministrations on you.
“Kara, she’s in here because of me,” Lena whispered, her voice breaking at the statement.
“Actually, correction. She’s in here because of your mother.”
Lena just shrugged. Whoever got blamed, it still didn’t negate the fact that you’re unconscious in a hospital bed and her involvement was how you got there.
“Everyone comes with their own baggage. I’m an alien from Krypton, Brainy’s from the future, J’onn is a Martian, you come from a homicidal family. Life goes on.”
Lena smiled as she caressed your bruised cheek and proceeded to clean up the used medical supplies.
“Just think about it okay? I see the way you look at each other. There’s something there.”
Kara didn’t give Lena the chance to respond. She turned on her heel and left her alone with you. Lena continued to look at your sleeping form and realized that, inadvertently, Kara told her that she could see that you must feel the same way about her.
***
Kara saw Brainy and Nia inside the control room. She heard tidbits of their conversation and as she got closer, she thought about asking Nia about something.
“I think Ms. Luthor has more than a crush on her bodyguard, especially since she’s willing to face the wrath of J’onn once he finds out that she brought her here,” Brainy said.
Nia smiled and waved to Kara as she got closer.
“Nia, can I ask you something?” Kara asked as she crossed her arms and got closer to them.
Nia nodded, already knowing what she was about to ask.
“Lena and her friend?” she asked, and Kara nodded. “It’ll take some time, but they will get there.”
After taking over her father's company, Lena Luthor spends her time trying to develop a safe man made synthetic blood for medical science and maybe for herself and her kind too of course. You see, Lena is technically human but she is also technically a vampire, well more of a half vampire that's more or less human except for her extra abilities and vitality. As she tries to develop a Blood substitute her brother Lex attempts to steer her away from the light and back down a dark path that has always beckoned her to walk down.
[Look, vampires are kinda cool and I've been meaning to finish this idea that I literally dreamed about last year so let me know if you guys like it, hate it, or have ideas for it yeah? I'll post it on Ao3 later.] Words: 3,036K 🙃
Lillian took the cold metal brush handle in her hand, making it up to her hair, and started to brush through the already smooth tresses of hair on Lena's head.
"On to more pressing matters, it seems we won't be hunting for a while, seeing that the humans are now more aware of our kind since your brother started his little war with the Kryptonians." The aimless brushing continued a bit rougher than before but not painful.
"How are we to feed then mother, how are you going to feed? I am obviously already prepared but I know you prefer straight from the source." There was a slight hesitation in the last stroke of the cold brush.
Lillian set it down slowly almost methodically as she turned away and towards the moonlit window behind them.
Lena looked after the older woman cautiously.
"Mother?"  Wearily she stood from the vanity mirror and closer to Lillian’s side.
She received a click of a tongue as an answer before she sighed.
"I hated how it reeked on his body, your father I mean, I hated how the smell of artificial blood was always stuck to him, it reminded me of that awful white meat substitute that some humans love in place of real meat."
"Tofu mother," Lena added helpfully as Lillian sneered further at the window and crossed her arms over her chest in defiance.
"Yes, that was it. He always smelled of his fake blood, you already adopted his tendencies to not want to drink from the source of what we need to survive, which is fine but I’ll never understand it." She turned her head to Lena almost puzzled.
“Well mother I know that this situation will be harder but I’ll try and figure something out for us. I'm sure I can maybe synthesize something more to your preferences if need be."
Lillian wasn't the warmest parent compared to most others but after Lex went on with his blood-war with the aliens, she saw that Lena was more stable than she originally thought, especially compared to her son. So through great effort and shattered pride, she tried her best to bridge the gap between her and her daughter as best as she could, trying to make up for years of neglect and misplaced scorn.
With a defeated sigh Lillian finally turned to look at her youngest,
"Thank you, dear, I know you'll try no matter how many times I say I'll be fine. I just want you to  use that brilliant brain of yours for more than just little old me, I'm content with the choices and endless amount of repenting I have waiting for me when it's time." Lillian never smiled at Lena, at least not often, especially as a child, but the one she gave her at that moment was the best one she'd ever seen.
“I think we all do mother. Thank you for taking care of me and letting me wait out the sun for today, I lost track of time again.” Lena lightly skims her thumb over the still healing blemish on her arm, if she were a full vampire like the rest of the Luthors in her family she would have lost it or simply turned to dust as her father did.
“Any time dear, this is still your home too, no matter what your brother claims.”
Lena almost cries, such simple words that her past self would have never dreamed of hearing from the woman before her, Lena simply nods in acknowledgment and heads back out to her car to get back to her apartment.
The drive back to National City is quiet, the long highway back lets her mind playback the hellish day she had, to say she’s dreading the minute she has to see the cities resident Super would be an understatement.
She saw me, I know she saw what I’m capable of. Or at least that I'm definitely NOT human.
Lena’s thoughts turn darker as she imagines the red-caped hero’s look of repulsion and utter hate when she does truly figure out that she’s a creature of the dark, or, at least half of one.
Her mind spirals further down the dark hole of fear of what she will do with her, so much so that she missed the new set of headlights quickly coming closer in her side-view mirror.
When it finally caught enough to slam into her back bumper she quickly snaps out of it and tries to keep her own car on the road and away from the sheer drop of the mountainside to her right.
“Fuck! Now, what!?” The vehicle sways again as the car behind her clashes into hers, she took one of her more pedestrian cars today so her usual horsepower she’d use to escape is severely lacking this time as another hit on her life is in motion again this week.
So much for going incognito.
The shattering of her rear window makes her jump, the side of her car slamming right into the metal railing, seeing the lack of ground on the other side has her heart drop right into her stomach as she tries to get control again.
Big nope to that.
Another pop was registered in Lena’s brain as she finally lost control of her car, her vision spinning just as quickly as the car itself.
“Fuckfuckfuck! I swear, I'm going to stake you myself when I deal with your pets, Lex!” Sweating out of panic, Lena decides that trying to outspeed them won’t happen while in her brick ford car, she figures that she just might have to use some of her power for this one.
Her car makes a sudden stop as the front end crashes through the metal railing at the edge of the road, she was lucky the car became wedged into the twisted metal otherwise she would have had a very unfortunate freefall over the cliff.
Dizzyingly, Lena pries her hands from the steering wheel, her death grip making her bones ache as she tried for her seatbelt next. The sound of car doors slamming shut jumpstarts her heartrate, flooding her system with adrenaline.
The shadows in the headlights get closer, the sound of a gun reloading, four sets of boots crunching on gravel as they round her car on both sides.
She is actually scared now, her right shoulder twinges painfully as she tries to rip out the buckle of her seatbelt, “Ah, shit.” They actually hit her it seems, her white blouse is starting to bleed red down her arm the more she struggles on the belt.
A balding man crouches down into her window, his eyes are glazed over, his face is twisted into a sickening grin. “Hello halfy,” He sneers. “Your big brother wanted us to check in on you this fine night, he was deathly worried for your health as of late.”
His gaze snaps to her bloody shoulder fixated on it for a second or so as he takes a deep breath of warm fresh blood, his dull eyes start to pool red as he takes another lung full of bloody air.
Lena shudders in disgust tilting her face away from his, he reeks of death and rot, ghouls were her least favorite creature that her brother had in his employ.
“Enjoying ourselves are we?” She mutters as his eyes roll open again.
He hums in delight. “He did say your blood was more or less mortal, it's almost humanly sweet.” his smile widens, some kind of old meat seemingly stuck in his teeth and gums as he appraises the state of her and her battered car. “Shame you didn't drive your nicer car, we could have stripped it for parts, but ah, oh well. We’re only here for you tonight then sadly.”
A creaking noise shook the car as he ripped her driver’s door clean off its hinges, Lenas heightened smell was shocked by a wall of death the bald man oozed when he leaned in to free her of her seatbelt and dragged her out of the car by the scruff of her blouse.
Still dazed and newly freed from the metal deathtrap, Lena saw this as her last chance to try and escape from her brother’s lackeys. “I may smell human but by no means does that mean that I’m weak like one.” Latching onto the ghoul’s arm with shaking hands, Lena uses his own weight to counterbalance them both into the loose dirt and flipped herself over again to grab for his throat. She hates to use it but her power has to be used now before what little blood she does drink wears off and leaves her completely defenseless, she’ll have to kill him quickly.
His body starts to convulse as she uses her hand to tear into his fragile throat, black rotten blood oozing over her fingers as his body finally stops thrashing about. She’s still aware of the three heartbeats of the other goons as she finally stands up, her glowing eyes lock onto a man with mousy brown hair, his own eyes are terrified. They all are.
These ones are all human, two are just boys compared to her own age, and they’re all frozen stock still like rabbits to a fox.
Lena is shaking, she doesn’t kill humans, she won’t stoop to her brother’s level. “Leave, go home and forget about this whole night, I don't want to kill any of you. This man was not human, he likely would have eaten you all after my death so take this as an act of mercy. Please.”
The youngest is seems to want no part so he tossed down his weapon and dragged the other two back to their vehicle, the older ones still frozen and staring at the rapidly decaying body of the now-dead ghoul. “Let’s get the hell out of here guys!”
The car ripped out and back onto the highway leaving a wobbly and drained Lena in the dust, “Ugh!” She shrieks in anger as she kicks the rotten body in her rage.
Before she can take out more of her frustration on the dead ghoul she hears a familiar chime of her phone’s ringtone, or more specifically, Karas ringtone.
“Shit. Movie night, I was supposed to be at Karas tonight.” Grumbling as she whipped her bloody hand on her jeans, she bent over to pick up her cracked phone to answer her friend.
“Lena?” Lena sighed, “Hi Kara, I'm sorry for not calling you back, I seem to have run into some car trouble on my way to yours.” Glancing over to her clearly totaled car she winced at the sight of it, “Well more like it's completely totaled now.”
On Karas’s end of the line, she heard a crash and rushing of footsteps, “Ohmygosh! Are you okay Lena?? Where are you, I can come to get you or send my friend to help? Please tell me you’re okay..”
The brunette felt her eyes well up with tears, she really didn't deserve this human known as Kara Danvers, she really didn't.
“I'm off of creek falls and the main highway near the cliff drop, I'm no worse for wear sort of, I'm standing on my own two feet at the moment so I’d say ok, for now anyway, I definitely need a shower and a lot of sleep after this though.” Lena tried to joke but didn't hear Kara anymore, just a rush of air against the microphone.
Confused Lena checks the line, “Kara? Are you still there?”
“Y-yeah Lena I'm still here, um, please don't be mad." Now that made Lena pause. "What? Why would I be mad at you?"
The wind in the earpiece lighted up a bit, "I'm almost there, I'm picking you up, I called Alex she'll be on her way too okay? Was there another car involved or an animal run across the road?" Panic gripped at Lena, Kara can't see this mess! Let alone the rotting ghoul body at her feet, she wouldn't understand!
"Kara, wait, it’s alright I already called the authorities and everything, it'll take a bit but I'm fine right now, also don't drive while on the phone! I don't want to be the cause of yet another accident tonight." Lena hear Kara scoff into the phone, "Thank you for the concern, but I'm definitely not driving, I don't even have a permit." She chuckled at her own expense.
Another pause.
"I'll be fine, just promise not to be mad when you see me? Yelling is fine but don't hate me, please." Anxiety wasn't a common thing for Lena but right now she can feel it clawing up her throat and she swallowed down her guilt of having her sweet fragile Kara seeing what her own monstrous hands are capable of.
She trusts Kara with her life, she'll have to trust her with her dark secret now. "Only if you promise me the same, it’s a mess over here and I'm certain that it'll be horrific for you to see why."
Kara hummed in thought for a second, "Well duh, I could never hate you Lena, or any other bad emotion towards you really." She said carefully like if she said it louder Lena wouldn't believe her.
"Ah wait, I think I see you? Oh." Kara whispered then the line went dead.
Lena was sitting hunched against her busted car, looking around confused at the lack of vehicle, Kara nowhere in sight. Letting out a ragged breath Lena let her head fall back with her eyes closed, praying that Kara would listen to her explain the scene before her.
The brunette’s eyes snapped open when she felt a warm hand on her good shoulder, to say she almost shit a brick would be putting it very lightly because right before her was Supergirl, but in Kara Danvers' sweats, T-shirt, and a very red cape with no socks or shoes to top it all off. Being shocked would be a very light word for how Lena is at that moment.
Super- uh, Kara is pretty much herself while she looks Lena over,  making soft cooing noises as she checks over each scrape and bruise, she all but balls her eyes out when she shifts Lena's shirt to check the gunshot wound.
"Lena, Rao, I should have listened further out for you, if I was listening I could have stopped this." Lena was a bit slow to process her words but she quickly bounced back and stupidly asked, “Kara? You’re not human?” Kara stilled her hands, “Yeah. I'm sorry I kept it from you ‘till now, I just could never find the right moment to tell you. I was going to try again tonight if that’s  worth anything.”
Kara did look nervous, wary that Lena was angry about her lying for so long, but instead of being angry Lena just full body laughed at their predicament.
As light tears started to form in Lena's eyes Kara nervously held the brunette's hand. "Lena? I don't know if laughing should make me feel nervous or happy right now."
Lena chuckled a couple more times and pulled the blonde into a relieved hug. "I've been an idiot, I've been trying to bring up the fact that I'm not human either for the past year Kara, so right now I think it's a bit ridiculous that you've been worrying about the same thing." Lena definitely didn't miss the full bodied twitch Kara did after hearing her say this, she understood though, Lena is technically human but only partially. It was briefly a one sided embrace until Kara hugged her back with almost all her strength, leaving Lena only mildly squished but overall content.
Their little bubble was immediately burst when a black SUV pulled up to blind the two of them, a bedraggled Alex dressed in her own pajamas and combat boots holding a shovel, "Kara. Tell me why did you text me 911 please  bring a shovel! At 1 am Kara- WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT??"
Alex is out of her car and right by Kara's side almost instantly when the once thought to be dead ghoul flips onto its side to drag its to Lena, grossly gurgling its black blood as it crawls over to the trio.
"That would be what's left of my brother's newest hit and sent to check in on me. He's a ghoul so I probably should have made sure to take the whole head off inside of ripping her throat out." Lena extracts herself from an equally shocked Kara and tugs the shovel out of Alex's limp fingers, "Please pardon me, I'll give it right back."
Alex looks at her dumbfounded, Lena shrugs as she turns back to the ghoul clearly annoyed beyond belief. "I would say have a nice trip given that you're going straight to hell but I really don't appreciate what you did to my car, " she glances over at the once upon a time pristine white paint job and cringes at the many bullet holes and scratches.
"Actually I'm more pissed that I had to meet you at all, so, bye now."
She raised the shovel as high as she could with her good arm and swung down with all of her might, the ghoul let out one last hiss as the head fell from his body.
Exhausted Lena looks back at the gawking Danvers sisters, "Help me clean this up and I'll get you both whatever food you want and could eat for a month?" She was almost certain Alex was going to shoot her up until that offer was in play, both sisters bolted up and came over to help.
"You're also going to fill us in about whatever the hell that thing was and why he worked for your brother." Alex stated as she waved her hand in Lena's direction in an almost protective voice.
"And about the not human thing." Kara mumbled as she grabbed the creatures legs over to the deepening hold Alex was currently working on.
With a big sigh of relief Lena nodded, vowing to answer whatever her two friends asked her.
"Deal."
A Night at the Lux
So this was posted before over on AO3 but because I don’t think I’ll be able to post much here today I present to you my weird little Supergirl/Lucifer crossover to tide you Tumblr folks over. Roll the intro hype!
"...Kara Zor-El what is it that you truly desire?”
A short and sweet story wherein Kara, while on assignment for CatCo in Los Angeles, finds herself at a nightclub called Lux and draws the attention of its annoyingly charming owner. There will be admissions of desires, singing and Kara deciding to stop being so weak about confronting Lena. Supergirl is about to dance with the Devil.
“You... at the end of all things, I thought about you..."
All in all, Kara felt that this trip to Los Angeles had been a roaring success and there had not been a single Supergirl emergency that required her attention. CatCo had sent her to cover a video-game convention something she had jumped at the chance to do. Especially after the last few months being one disaster after another.
The Red Daughter and the dark mirror she’d been forced to stare into. The Crisis and carrying the burden of hope as Oliver had sacrificed his life for the multiverse and then coming back from that with Lena still hating her freaking guts thanks to Lex’s machinations and her own stupidity. It had been a rough year, even by her standards and she'd fought World Killers and evil Nazi Doppelgangers.
It hadn’t been all doom and gloom though, the Crisis and the following universal reboot meant that Kate and Barry were now only a phone call away and she had more masked friends than ever before with Nia and Brainy around. Alex was happy with Kelly and her extended family was strong even though it was missing a key member. None of that was the reason why she was in a nightclub called Lux with some of the reporters that had been covering the convention. No, she was here due to good old-fashioned peer pressure.
Truth be told, this place wasn’t her scene at all, she was a dive bar kind of girl and this place well it was too loud and glitzy. People watching from her safe spot in the corner while sipping her virgin Virgin Mary she counted down the minutes until she could go back to her hotel room.
Watching the club's patrons dance and drink the night away while wondering why there was a grand piano in a nightclub did take her mind of Lena though. Now, by her estimations, it was two more hours of this. Then she could make her exit without offending her peers and get back to the hotel to mope in private.
“Now I know every regular that comes through my doors, but I don’t think I’ve seen you before,” a British accented voice said and when she looked up she was faced with what could best be described as a tall, dark and handsome man in a black suit with piercing eyes. How she had not heard him approach her private corner? She thought before she found herself strangely compelled to explains why she was here.
“I’m not from around here, actually, I’m in town on business but would really love to be back on the couch at home and... why am I telling you this?” she asked as the words fell out of her mouth and on a hunch she used her x-ray vision to be sure that this wasn’t an alien. But what she saw confused her more than anything. Because upon using her enhanced senses, he appeared like a glowing being of light.
“It’s a gift, people always seem to want to tell me things, Lucifer, Morningstar,” the man introduced himself while taking a seat across from her.
“Kara Zor… Kara Danvers,” she said almost saying Kara Zor-El before finding the willpower to resist the man’s annoyingly soothing voice and piercing gaze.
“Oh, you’re impressive Miss Danvers,” he laughed, and she wished she’d paid more attention to when Eliza had been trying to teach her about Earth religions because that name was so familiar.
“Lena doesn’t seem to think so, she thinks I’m downright vile right now,” she said and that was it. Who was this being? Because he, sure as heck wasn’t human or alien and she sure as heck didn’t need her mind probed right now. Especially by some smooth-voiced club owner and she felt anger and rage rising in her chest.
“What are you?” she demanded with a bit more steel to her voice while letting the mask of Kara Danvers, good-natured reporter, slip.
“Oh, hello there, I must say this whole duality of being you got going on here is very interesting, Kara Zor-El, and I told you already my name is Lucifer Morningstar,” he laughed and greeted her again.
“As in the Judeo-Christian devil? The one that fell?” she asked in disbelieve when it finally clicked, but she'd always been more of a science guild girl herself anyways ever since she was a kid on Krypton and Krypton didn't really have a devil analog in their pantheons aside from Vohc the Breaker.
“The one and only and you look like one Constantine’s little friends, you know... one of those cape-wearing demi-gods that popped up after that little universal merger the other day,” he replied without any hint of not being serious while waving off the Crisis like it was just another Tuesday.
“How… how do you know all this?” she demanded and drained her Virgin Mary in one big gulp while her mind tried to process who she was sitting across from. Rao help her, not even going out clubbing albeit against her will could be simple.
“Let’s call it my unique outlook on the world, now Kara Zor-El what is it that you truly desire?” he asked and again those eyes bore down on her with the weight of ages behind them.
“I… want…” she stated saying through gritted teeth as she fought tooth and nail against what she wanted to admit. It was like a mental block, she knew what she wanted, but three years of denial wasn't easily overcome.
“Oh, this is fun, humans usually come right out and blurt out their darkest desires right away. I must admit, I haven’t had to work this hard for a confession in ages,” he laughed and clapped his hands together with unbridled glee.
“I want Lena Luthor! Now get out of my head Vohc!” she roared out switching from English to Kryptonian as she tore off her glasses and flashed her heat-vision at the insufferable being in front of her.
“My, my, my, that is a lot of pent up rage and emotions,” he chuckled and got to his feet seemingly satisfied with having gotten her to confess her desire for Lena.
“I want… Lena,” she whispered to herself while looking down at her hands and all of a sudden, memories of every touch, every gesture and every shared look between her and the raven-haired beauty came flooding back.
“How about a song? I bet you have a wonderful singing voice Miss Zor-El,” the infuriating devil, well literal Devil, asked her and offered her his hand.
Glaring up at him, with half a mind to fry him with a blast of heat-vision but judging from his personality he’d probably like that. Screw it, she thought to herself and took his hand with as much force as she could, which to her considerable pleasure made him wince.
“The Devil Went Down to Georgia, I assume you know it?” she asked with a smirk as he slithered behind the grand piano and then the club went oddly silent.
“Cheeky… I like it,” the Devil laughed and started gliding his fingers over the black and whites keys of the piano.
Devil Went Down to Georgia, sung with gusto, gave way to All Along the Watchtower at Lucifer’s request which then slipped into Moon River before her requesting that they sing Running Home To You which she had sung at Barry’s wedding. By this point, some of her colleagues from the other outlets had started filming the impromptu concert on their phones but she paid them no heed. This was fun and Lucy wasn't half-bad on the piano or when it came to singing.
“This next song is for a very special girl, her name is Lena,” she said softly before launching into Total Eclipse of the Heart and when the notes died down Lucifer was looking at her with something akin to sympathetic sadness. While she was pretty sure she was crying as she took off her glasses and placed them on the piano.
“It isn't simply a desire that you feel for this Lena is it?” he asked her as she looked around the club, then down at him before giving a small smile and shaking her head.
"Well providing distractions is something I'm very good at, how about another song, something more upbeat? We make a pretty good duet you know," the said with a devilish grin.
“Yeah, we do, but you for the record are still a jerk,” she said and accepted another drink from a passing waitress who was kinda cute and this drink wasn't virginal at all, no she was pretty sure this one fucked.
“Then let's do another song, what will it be?” he asked without missing a beat and she grinned at him thankful for the distraction and for some reason this particular cocktail was working freaking wonders for her.
“Piano Man! Scoot over!” she exclaimed and the groan and the look of horror on his face made the lame suggestion so totally worth it as she sat down next to him.
“Oh, you play too?” he asked sounding impressed and gave up the keys to her for which she flashed him a beaming smile.
“Didn't you know? I’m all sorts of impressive... Lucy,” she assured him with a tipsy giggle.
The night passed in a blur of drinks, music, dancing and an impromptu bar brawl when someone got too handsy with one of the cute waitresses. Thus, both her and her new best friend, the Devil, had stepped in to settle things. With her being a bit tipsy she might have gotten a bit too excited but Lucy assured that the hole in the wall could easily be patched up. Along with the handsy bro she'd thrown through the wall
"Your waitresses are all so cute!" she giggled with her glasses off and forgotten on top of the grand piano as they danced together. Oh yes, she was tipsy, potentially drunk and dancing with the Devil, but she was having the best time without any expectations weighing her down.
"And you are very drunk Miss Zor-El," he laughed and twirled her around before letting her go but he made sure she bumped into one of the said cute waitresses.
"Hi I'm Kara... you're like super cute!" she giggled to the waitress and the girl in a very short dress actually smiled back at her.
"And I'm... off the clock," the girl said with a grin before taking her hands and placing them firmly on her hips. Oh, this was new and she kinda liked it.
When she woke up the next day, she was back in her hotel room and thankfully by herself although that waitress had been cute, her endgame was Lena. Cracking her eye open to see that on the nightstand there was an apple and a bottle of water along with a handwritten note that read: You’re heavier then you look, come back for an encore anytime. L. p.s. Emily says hi
“Of course… an apple,” she chuckled but that made her head hurt. What had been in those drinks she wondered as she picked up the apple and took a bite. By Rao it was delicious, but then again Lucy would know a thing or two about apples.
Then she made the mistake of looking at her phone and to say it was blowing up would have been an understatement. Barry, Kate, Alex, Kelly, Nia, Brainy, Eliza, and even J’onn had messaged her while she slept. What had she done? What had she texted?
“Not good…” she muttered to herself as she checked the first message which was from Barry along with a link to a video.
Can’t believe you had a concert without me! I thought we were Super Friends and isn’t Lena that girl who hates you though? The message read and she clicked the link with a sense of dread.
“This next song is for a very special girl, her name is Lena,” she heard herself saying before Lucifer started playing the first few bars to Total Eclipse of the Heart.
Watching the video it was clear as day from her body language and singing how special Lena was to her and while this was a good thing, she did want the greeny-eyed genius, she hadn’t intended for her singing to the absent beauty to become quite so public.
“Oh shiitake-mushrooms!” she cursed and opened the message from Kate which was not as, let’s say, tactfully put as Barry’s.
So how was Narnia? Also how come I didn’t know you could sing sunshine? So much for me being a detective I guess. Call me if you need to talk the text from her cowled friend in Gotham read followed by a winky face and she wanted to crawl under the covers and die.
Love you and I’m here when you need to talk the message from Alex read. It was in a reply from one she'd sent at 4 AM which read, I'm bi or maybe pan and drunk and dancing with a girl! Don't tell Lena!?! and she smiled despite how gosh-darned awkward this all was.
The rest of her friends' messages were more along the lines of lovably mocking in their comments or outright praising her performance, but the one person who hadn’t texted her was Lena. Not that she’d had a text from the former CEO in ages anyways.
“I want Lena,” she repeated what she’d confessed to Lucifer the night before to herself and it still rang true in her heart and mind.
But if last night had taught her anything, it was that she didn’t just want to be friends with Lena again. No, she wanted to fly there and kiss the stubborn woman senseless after talking some sense into her thick skull. They’d both made mistakes but for Rao's sake, they weren’t teenagers.
Thinking about how to best approach getting to Lena as she munched on her apple before rolling off the bed. Giving a loud groan before gabbing the water bottle and chugging it to try to relieve her hangover because whatever was in the drinks at Lux wasn’t of this Earth that was for sure. Then a hot shower and room-service by an open window with the sun on her skin took care of the rest of her hangover.
Making the tactical decision of ignoring her phone, aside from sending a thank you text to Alex and sending ones that read something to the effect of; I’ll get you next time you do something stupid to Barry and Kate. It was almost time to leave the safety of the hotel room, so she packed up her carry-on and got on the flight back home. Of course, she would have preferred to fly home under her own power but CatCo was paying for her tickets and it would look weird if she didn’t use them.
Admittedly, the radio silence while on the plane was a welcome diversion too because it gave her time to think and to plan out her next moves. Getting Lana to see that she was truly sorry would require more than moping around like some heartbroken teenager, she was Kara Zor-El for Rao’s sake and it was time to act like it. Once she landed in National City, she headed straight for the nearest place to change into her Supergirl suit.
Lena would still be at work of course but that meant that she had time to put her plan into action. Drawing in a deep breath before taking off towards the sky she rose higher and higher until she broke free of the bonds of Earth. Her destination was a small asteroid, though covered in eons worth of dust it was in fact made of a special type of crystal and she needed one. Cutting a piece from the astroid using her heat-vision, she turned the crystal over in her hands and inspected it, this would do nicely.
Looking at the stars and then to the Sun, she smiled, feeling the rays of the yellow sun kiss her skin. Lena was her Sun, and she's been in an eclipse for far too long. It was well overdue she fixed that.
Returning from near-Earth space, she crashed through Earth’s atmosphere on course for the Fortress of Solitude. Lena had been here not so long ago and even in the cold of the Artic the woman had been stunning and she swore that one day she would bring her back here. Shaking away her day-dreams, she took her freshly harvested crystal and plugged it into one of the pillar style consoles that dotted the Fortress.
“Format this crystal and download all data on Krypton to it along with all information on my personal history,” she instructed the Fortress’s system and the crystal started pulsating with a faint blue light.
While the crystal was being prepared, she started zooming around the fortress, constructing a small device that would be able to read and display the information on the crystal. Combing information in the Fortress’s archives with her own living knowledge from Krypton the small metallic device took shape.
“Data upload complete Kara Zor-El,” the Fortress droned and the crystal now pulsating with blue light popped out of the console.
“Thank you,” she said slipped it into the reader she’d constructed. The entirety of Krypton’s history flashed before her along with her own family’s history.
Time for the final steps of her plan. Flying back to National City she stopped at a cute little stationery store while in full costume. There she bought a card and a box along with some red ribbon. The star-truck cashier was very helpful and as a matter of fact, so was the florist across the street when she asked him for a single longstemmed red rose.
It was getting dark so Lena would be back home by now and she had everything ready. The gift was wrapped, the card was written, and the rose would indicate that this wasn’t just a friendly gesture, she hoped. Taking another one of those deep breaths she flew to Lena’s apartment and landed gently on her balcony.
Through the glass, she could see the raven-haired beauty bent over her laptop with her hair up in a tight ponytail and wearing a blue dress minus the heels. If there ever had been any doubt about her wanting Lena, the sight of the raven-haired goddess working dispelled those doubts like the first rays of the sun when they hit the morning dew. She wanted Lena with all her Kryptonian heart but she had to approach this carefully.
“Here goes nothing,” she said to herself and knocked on the glass while hiding the gifts behind her back.
The knocking made Lena jump and then frown at the sight of her but she was used to being frowned at by now. Waving through the window, she watched the woman walk across her apartment and slide the door open.
“Kara I…” Lena started saying no doubt going to ask her to leave but this wasn’t about being nice or polite, she had something to say and she wasn’t going to be stopped or sent away. Supergirl didn't back down from a challenge or a fight and this was a fight for the most precious thing in her life.
“Lena, all I ask is that you listen to me and then I’ll go,” she said with as much authority as she could muster while being in the presence of Lena like this.
“Very well, speak then,” Lena said with a raised eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest.
“I messed up badly and I know that I’ve told you that before, but last night in L.A. I realized something and well these are for you,” she said and pulled the long-stemmed rose and wrapped gift from behind her back.
Lena looked at the rose and the small white box with the red bow and then back up at her. The look of confusion on that beautiful pale face was clear as day and she smiled back at her friend while holding out the gifts silently begging her to take them.
“I want to make amends for not telling you about... well everything, so this is everything,” she said and slowly Lena reached out and took the rose and then the small box.
“Everything?” the ever-curious raven-haired beauty asked and pulled the ribbon of the box to open it. The crystal pulsed when the box was opened bathing Lena's face in ethereal blue light.
“That crystal holds the entirety of Krypton’s history and knowledge and everything about me. It’s who I was and who I am, Kara Zor-El, everything,” she said softly, and it felt like she was introducing herself to Lena for the first time.
“The rose, it’s a thank you and something I should have given you a long time ago. A thank you... for filling my office with flowers back when we met... for buying CatCo and for believing in me and letting me be myself... for letting me write my Pulitzer winning article at your desk… for well everything,” she said stopping herself before going on too long and smiled at Lena again with hope in her heart because those memories were among her most cherished.
“Kara, what are you saying?” Lena asked in a moment of genuine confusion from the usually on-top of things woman followed by dawning realization.
“I’m saying that I get it now and that I want to start over again but do it right this time,” she said and leaned in placing a kiss on Lena’s cheek as softly as she could. Hold it together Danvers, she reminded herself, you're here on the hope that she will hear you out
“You… can’t just do that... not after…” Lena protested but didn’t push her away and Rao she smelled good.
“I am sorry, I will keep telling you that I’m sorry until the end of the universe. But Lena, I’ve seen the end and you want to know who I thought about when all seemed lost? What gave me hope? ” she asked and looked deep into those Kryptonite green eyes.
“No... please...” Lena tried to refuse but with her voice choking up and she could see fear flashing in those lovely green-eyes as those red lips trembled.
“You... at the end of all things, I thought about you and how I would never get the chance to see you again... to say I'm sorry again... to hold you again,” she spoke in almost a whisper with her lips almost touching Lena’s ear.
“You’re… not playing fair Kara,” Lena whispered back and she felt Lena's hand on her arm. They were the shaking hand of someone who was overwhelmed and afraid but she was getting through to her, she knew it.
“I’m telling you the whole truth. What you decide to do with it is up to you and when you want to talk things out I’ll be ready,” she said and as much as she wanted to kiss Lena right there and then, they weren’t there yet.
After a moment of silence with Lena holding onto her arm, she turned away while wiping away a tear and she got ready to fly off. Lena would need time to think and analyze as she always did but she’d said her piece and made her peace offering. But before she could go, Lena, pulled at her cape.
“Stay...” Lena asked in a very small voice while holding onto a handful of her cape and she smiled her happiest smile at the raven-haired woman who had always been the one. She knew that now.
“Only if you want me too,” she replied and turned around with Lena not letting go of her cape which pulled them dangerously close together. It was only when Lena started touching her cheek that thinking became very hard.
“I want you to stay… you’re not off the hook yet, but you’ve raised some interesting points that we need to explore,“ Lena said with her voice slowly gaining some of that confidence that she so loved and there was that smirk. That gosh-darned smirk and she felt herself melting inside from the look she was being given.
“That’s why I came... oh and in the name of full disclosure, there is a video online you should watch... then we can talk all night long if you want,” she said as she felt a small blush creeping into her cheeks. The Lena problem was not solved, not fully, but progress had been made and progress was something she could work with.
"Is that a promise... come on darling let's watch this embarrassing video of you, together," Lena said with her voice sounding husky and wait was she teasing her? It sounded like Lena Luthor was teasing her, then those ruby-red lips were pressed against her cheek and there was that kapow that Winn had told her about all those years ago. From just a kiss on the cheek, she felt those elusive fireworks go off and she allowed herself to be led into Lena's apartment for a long night of talking. Hope had been restored with a little help from the Devil.
Second Heart
The Past beats inside me like a Second Heart- John Banville, The Sea
A soft beeping invaded Lena's conciseness, her headache pulsing with it each time. Through a haze she groggily opened her eyes, becoming away of someone touching her. No, tucking in a blanket? Lena blinks a couple more times and her headache seems to spike harshly behind her eyes.
"Ugh, fuck…" she mumbles and tries to lift her hand to her temple but it's tugged short by something in her arm. An IV. Her sluggish mind was starting to put prices together as the harsh smell of sterilization fills her nostrils.
"Lena!" The blonde woman cries from where she just tucked a colorful, warm blanket under Lena's left leg. She reaches out towards Lena but seems to hesitate, just a moment, before pushing the call button for the Doctor. She must be the nurse checking on her. But for wha- "Ah!" Lena uses her fee hand this to grab the side of her head and squeeze her eyes shut. Don't cry. Don't you fucking cry. Luthors don't show weakness. Lena can just picture the disappointed look Lillian would give her right now. That helps her push the pain back, back behind the mask she always wears.
The blonde woman was watching her intently. The blue eyes staring into her in such a way that Lena was sure that she would burn her soul with the heat of it. Lena turns away and takes in the room. A blanket and pillow are neatly folded on the comfortable looking couch in the large hospital room. A laptop sits open with file folders and notebooks splayed out around it on the coffee table. That's not a good sign. The only person who could be here for her would be Lillian and she wouldn't be happy about being called to Metropolis in the middle of the move. This isn't good for our stocks, she can hear Lillian almost sneer. But not quite, she's too proper for a real sneer. Lena is pulled from her thoughts by she doctor entering.
"Well-" she glances at the blonde woman, she shakes her head just slightly. It's a weird interaction but Lena lets nothing show on her face. "Ms. Luthor. Welcome back to the land of the living. You had us worried there for a bit."
"I-" Lena is cut off by her own rough voice. It feels very unused and sore. She casts about for some water, which the blonde is already pouring. Lena nods as she hands it to her and takes a couple of sips.
"I am not sure what is happening right now, Doctor..."
"Doctor Natu. First, I have just a couple questions and I have to check you over. Then you can ask me questions."
Lena sighs, "Very well."
The doctor begins by asking her name.
"Lena Kiran Luthor."
"Age?"
"Twenty-four,"
"What city are we in?"
"Metropolis."
"Who is the current president?"
"President Baker."
"What year is it?"
"2019, seriously are we done yet?" Lena is getting exasperated with the questions and poking and prodding and that stupid little light that the woman is shining in her eyes. The blonde woman had excused herself when the Doctor started.
"Yes, I think so. From what I can tell, you are on your way to being completely healed."
"Doctor Natu, I suggest you start giving me some answers before I sue this hospital into giving me someone who can," Lena says sternly, but still without much emotion.
"May I sit?" She asks, gesturing to the chair next to the bed. Lena nods slightly.
"This is going to be very hard to hear Lena." Lena swallows at the use of her first name, it's to lessen the blow of whatever is coming.
"You suffered a very serious head trauma. From what we can gather, your airplane was shot from the sky, blowing a hole in the plane," the doctor is speaking softly and evenly so as not to frighten her. "You only lived because Supergirl caught you immediately, but as you were basically vacuumed out of the plane by the air pressure, the back of your head caught on the opening. Your brain began to swell from the impact and put you into a coma."
"Supergirl… wait. What plane? How long have I been out? The only plane I was going to get on was the Venture, and I had to pull out last minute."
"You've only been 'out' for six days. But due to the brain swelling, it seems you have lost a great deal of memory." The doctor says softly, picking each word with care.
"How much?" Lena whispers.
"Right now, the year is 2024. You are twenty-nine and currently living in National City, where you moved and rebranded L-Corp five years ago."
"Five…" Lena trails off and looks out the large windows at the unfamiliar skyline. How could she have lost five years of memories?
"Where's my mother? I need to speak to her." Lena almost snaps the question at the poor doctor. Surely she must have been alerted to Lena waking up.
"To the best of my knowledge, some FBI black site after her third escape attempt from the maximum-security prison."
"Nonsense. Who else would be here?" Lena gestures to the pile of stuff on the coffee table. Though now that she looks at it, it's a rather disorganized pile. One with colorful sticky notes and pens and she can see a small Pride flag stuck to the top corner of the back that faces her.
"Well, that's another big thing you seem to be missing because it happened in the past five years. That would be your wife's laptop."
"My wife!?" Lena exclaims, immediately regretting it as her headache rises with her voice. Lena clamps her eyes shut against the pain. The door bursts open at Lena's raised voice and the blonde enters the room again. Her wife enters the room again.
"What's wrong? What happened?" Concerned drips from her voice and fire burns in her eyes as she realizes the source of Lena's outburst must be the doctor.
"I was just informing Lena of her situation. She's missing about five years of time, she referred to the Venture before it exploded."
The woman seems to deflate and sadness floods her features. It makes Lena's heart hurt in an unexpected way. "So before she met me." The woman says softly.
"I'm afraid so. I would like to keep Lena just a few more days. Although the swelling has gone completely down, I would like to monitor her to see if any of her memory returns or if there was further brain damage that we weren't able to assess while she was unconscious. Physical Therapy will start tomorrow morning. Maybe try to tell her some of the major events from after she can remember. It may jog the rest of it. I'll be back to check in before I leave." Doctor Natu stands to leave.
Lena's wife holds out her hand for the doctor to shake.
"Thank you. For everything. For coming when I called. It really means a lot to me."
Doctor Natu smiles softly, "After what you did last year, how could I not? We all owe you big." The blonde woman nods and returns the smile. It's an odd moment before the doctor leaves the room and the blonde woman takes a deep breath before turning to Lena.
"If you would like to sleep, we can talk later." She says in a small voice, it's very unsure of itself and it feels odd coming from the woman. Like Lena knows she shouldn't feel this distant from her.
Lena looks into those bright blue eyes and tries to remember something, anything.
"I would like to know my wife's name if it's not too much?" And Lena knows those are the right words to say because that life is magical to her years. The woman's shoulders relax and she takes the seat the doctor vacated moments before. The woman's hand hovers over Lena's but she pulls back when she sees Lena pull away slightly.
"Right. Guess that would be a good thing to know. Seeing as you don't even remember meeting me. Man, I had always wished I had been cooler when we first met and I actually get a do-over and I'm just ramb-" she pauses at Lena's raised eyebrow before taking a deep breath. "Right. Sorry. Hi, I'm Kara Danvers. Well, now its Danvers-Luthor." The woman, Kara, sticks out a timid hand towards Lena. Lena hesitates before taking.
"Lena Luthor, though I'm guessing it's Danvers-Luthor."
Kara grins, eyes squinting in the corner as she nods. Lena's heart flutters a bit at the sight. This woman was pulling down all the walls Lena had built to protect herself. Or she already had and Lena's body was just remembering more than her brain did. It made her uncomfortable and she tried to shut it down. Kara noticed the change right away and looked at Lena with such deep concern it speared straight through her.
"I'm sorry. I should let you sleep a bit. It's only a little before nine in the morning. I need to make some phone calls anyway. I'll be just outside your door so just call out if you need anything." Kara stands and makes sure the water cup is full and in easy reach, as well as the television remote and the remote attached to the bed for her to call the nurses station. Kara shuts the blinds without being asked and turns out the light on her way. All small gestures that are so foreign to Lena that she spends the entirety of Kara's quick movements in silence until she's out the door.
It sure doesn't help the headache to think about but she is getting drowsy and the pain is numbing from the doctor adjusting her pain meds during the examination. Lena sinks back into the pillow as numbness begins to trickle in much faster now that she is no longer distracted. Sleep is easy to sink into then as the chemicals in her bloodstream do their work.
Lena sits, writing across endless documents as she travels as quickly as she can home. She's eager, that's for sure. It bubbles in her chest as the plane soars across the sky. She really is trying to focus but something keeps pulling her attention. Lena instead gets up to make herself a drink at the mini bar, it's still at least an hour until the descent and the minutes were ticking by too slowly.
She just had to go to London this past week. Of course, it was yesterday that the news came in, instead of in three days. But Lena had left early to be home when…
The sudden explosion knocks her from her feet and she hits the side of the plane as it leeches to the side. Then she's being thrown to the back as her ears pop and the plane begins to fall. Another explosion and the back of the plane is rent open and all Lena can see is the black sky as she rushes towards it. Suddenly her head explodes in pain as she hits the ceiling and a blur of red and blue fills her vision.
Lena wakes with a shout and breathing heavy. The heart monitor is going crazy and then Kara is pushing into the room, eyes wide looking for the source of distress. When she sees Lena alone and takes in her frazzled, sweaty appearance, she relaxes again.  She moves to sit next to Lena and stops short of reaching out again. Faintly, it registers how hard this must be for the woman.
"It's okay. You're safe. It was just a dream. Doctor Natu said it may happen because you are still trying to process everything that happened."
Lena gulps at the air and clutches the sheets. Slowly she gets her breathing back under control and smooths her hair back from her face. Before she can even ask, Kara is holding out a hair tie for her to use.
Lena plucks it from her fingers, "Thanks." She murmurs as she scrapes the oily mess back. She really needs a shower. Lena settles back against the raised bed and tries to relax.
"What time is it?" She asks.
"Almost one. I'll page the nurse to bring you food. Dr. Natu instructed them to let you sleep." Which Kara does immediately after.
"You and the Doctor seemed close. What happened last year?"
"Nothing important right now. She's a friend of my cousin. They needed help with this group thing last minute." Lena raises an eyebrow but lets it go when the nurse deposits a tray of bland food in front of her.
"Sorry dear, we have to keep it simple and ease you back onto solid food. Tomorrow there should be some more fruit though."
Lena saved her sneer for when the nurse leaves. Still, she speers the mushy vegetables on her fork and takes a bite out of the buttered bread. Kara refills her water before taking a seat next to her. Kara is obviously actively looking anywhere but Lena.
"So," Lena starts, trying to figure out how to navigate this situation. Nothing in her Luthor training prepared her for losing her memory only to find out she is married and 'out' of the closet publicly. Also that your mother is in jail alongside your crazy brother and you have moved cities and-
"What do you do for a living? That's a lot of files." Lena gestures with her fork, trying to get a hold of her spiraling thoughts.
"Well, I'm a senior reporter for CatCo."
Lena nearly chokes on her carrot. She swallows and takes a sip of water."I married a reporter? How did that happen?"
"Well actually, I wasn't one when we met. But you kind of gave me the courage to do it."
“I did that?”
“Yeah, you did. It was probably the start of everything for us.”
Lena chews thoughtfully for a few minutes. This woman was nothing like she would have considered dating before. She was open and honest in a way Lena wasn’t used to. It also made her want to slam her walls up and not trust a word out of her mouth. What if this was all a crazy ruse by her insane brother and she wasn’t really married to this beautiful blonde woman. She could only play along to find out.
“Tell me about it then. Maybe it will help jog my memory.”
“Well, it was right after the Venture explosion, the Supers saved the plane from going down. While trying to figure out what caused it, they discovered the only empty seat was...umm… well, yours.”
“So of course the Luthor had to be the culprit.”
“It was suspicious at first, so they asked my cousin to interview you and since I was kind of at a loss of what to do with my life, he invited me along.”
“Who’s your cousin? Anyone I know?”
Kara laughs slightly and Lena realizes how silly of a question that is. She probably knew Kara’s family pretty well at this point.
“Right, I mean, five years ago. Did I know him then?”
“I’d say yes. Clark Kent, he’s my cousin.”
“Crap. A family of reporters? What was I thinking?” Lena only half teases.
“Trust me, it's not the only thing crazy about our relationship, but I’ll tell you more, later. Anyway, Clark brought me along and you were so strong and confidant. Golly, I could barely get a word out.”
Golly? Was she for real?
“Anyway, even Clark was convinced you didn’t do it then. After that, they found evidence that the bomb was planted directly under what would have been your seat. As we investigated the accident you had two more assassination attempts and… Supergirl saved you both times. And actual on the second one, your would-be assassin, had my sister at Gunpoint and you saved her. You were scared but this fire burned in your eyes like nothing I had ever seen before. All you wanted was to do good in the world but your brother was trying to have you killed.” Kara stares at Lena with an intensity that only her Luthor training keeps her from squirming.
“Clark published an article after it was all said and done. It gave you and L-Corp good press that you needed and Clark apologized for not believing you.”
Lena snorts.
“It's true, you said ‘If I can make a believer out of Clark Kent, there’s hope yet.’ Then you turned to me and asked why my name wasn’t on the by-line. I told you I wasn’t a reporter and all you said was ‘Well, you could have fooled me.’ That was it. I just knew if you believed in me, then I could do it. Which is crazy considering I had just met you. But nothing about our story is very normal.”
Kara sits back and fiddles with her glasses a bit, trying to find a way to keep going. THings with Lena hadn’t been this awkward since… well since ever. At least, in the beginning, they had so much to talk about, Kara was able to scale her wall because of the trials they went through together. Now here Kara was, at the finish line of a marathon and Lena had been transported back to the beginning.
“I think… yeah, I think I brought it with me. The article I mean. You saved it way back when and the doctor thought familiar things may help. Hold on.” Kara stands up to fast, almost knocking the chair over with a blush. Lena smiles softly before she even realizes it. This has to be real, because the way her body reacts to Kara, that couldn’t be faked. Her heart flutters with a bit of joy at her clumsiness and her lips smile as if they have done it a thousand times before. Kara Begins shifting through piles of things and it honestly amazes Lena how Kara has very much taken over the hospital room in a week's time. She has to believe Kara was basically living here at this point. She obviously had been working from here.
“Aha!” Kara exclaims, pulling out a small looking photo album from the bottom of a precarious stack of books and papers.
“You pasted it into the front of this photo album. You said it's what started our friendship so a few years ago when we assembled these things, you put it in our ‘Friend.’ album. It's the year before we finally admitted our feelings for one another. Alex likes to call it our Clueless Gay’s’ Year. Because we were so clueless.” Kara excitedly hurries back to her chair to hand the album to Lena. “Hopefully this helps. Go on. The article is in the front, and feel free to look at the pictures too.”
Lena scrutinizes Kara’s eager face before carefully opening the cover. She reads the article, but the words don’t mean much to her. It comes like a muggy memory. The bright white of her new office, Kara in a pink that matches the blush on her cheeks as she fiddles with her glasses. Lena had watched her carefully because she had trust issues, but she instantly thought that she wanted to make Kara smile like that again. She remembers feeling her stomach erupt in butterflies that she barely managed to hide by turning away and walking to her desk.
“I hope this isn’t the last time we talk.” Lena murmurs to herself.
“I hope not either.” Kara gives her almost the same smile as her memory. “You remembered.”
“A little. You were cute. You were wearing that pink blazer. And you kept avoiding my eye contact. It was cute.”
“You made me nervous, not in a ‘Luthor’ sort of way, like you used to accuse everyone of, but in the ‘Oh my Ra-gosh, I think I like women.’ Then it was a roller coaster of my sister coming out to me and working through all of that. And I didn’t want to steal her thunder, plus what if you didn’t like me, or if you were straight and then Jack came back and then Mike and-”
“Jack? Jack Spheer? Why did he come back?”
Kara gets all sad then. Lena can already guess what bad news is coming.
“He thought he cracked his nanotechnology. But really he created a deadly swarm out of himself that his CFO was controlling. When I found out I told you and you went to confront him. In the end, it was either save Jack or save… Supergirl. She had tried to come rescue you. You chose her. Because you are always sacrificing yourself for the good of everyone else. It’s one of the things that made me fall in love with you.”
“He’s… dead?”
Kara nods and Lena sits back against her pillows to take in the information. This time the memory slams into her. Jack in pain on the ground, her fist throbbing from punching the evil woman, Supergirl being suffocated by the swarm that the woman was controlling. She knew, even if she let Supergirl die, her chances of saving Jack were slim. He wasn’t really him anymore. He had sacrificed himself for science and lost. She hits the kill switch.
Lena inhales a deep breath and comes back to the present. Kara’s eyes ask the question and Lena just nods. Instead of looking at her wife, she flips the page and skims a mix of faces, some she knows and some she doesn't. Her and Kara among them along with a smattering of others. Alex, she remembers. She recognizes James Olsen too, but from her time in Metropolis.
“Great, more press.” She grumbles.
“Ah, yeah. You and James dated briefly.”
Lena visibly cringes and almost throws the book away from her.
“That’s how I felt. You admitted later that it was because of our poor communication skills. I encouraged you to go for it, along with the rest of our friends. At the time I was dealing with the heartbreak of losing someone I cared about and then having them show back up in my life. I was also suppressing a lot of feelings for you. You said it felt like we were growing apart and it was a way to stay closer to me. We both made poor decisions.”
“Why are you being so vague?”
Kara chews on her bottom lip as Lena slowly flips through the pages. The plastic protecting the pictures crinkles under her touch. She and Kara spent a lot of time together, and when they weren't looking at the camera, they were looking at each other with so much love that it almost sickened Lena, if it didn’t make her stomach flutter. She flips to the last page with a picture of her and Alex hugging Kara tightly from both sides.
A glass of whiskey set down hard cracks the frame and anger builds in Lena’s chest like a hot beast that she had chained down but now it was free. She snapped the book shut and shoves it back at the blonde woman. Kara recoils at the heat blazing in the green eyes that she hadn’t seen in a long time.
“Crap.”
“Yeah ‘Crap’”
“Lee please-”
“You lied to me! For so fucking long. And you continued lying to me just now! You’ve been lying since I woke up! ‘Oh Lena, Supergirl saved you.’ ‘Oh, Lena I helped with the investigation but you had to choose between Jack and Supergirl.’” Lena mocks her and folds arms over her chest, cringing slightly as her headache throbs with her yelling.
“Rao, I want to have this fight again. I know. I was selfish and I didn’t tell you. I told myself it was to protect you but then it became protecting myself. I was selfish because Supergirl tainted all my relationships and I didn’t want that to happen with you. So be mad. I hope that you can remember how hard we fought to get back to each other. If you can’t then I will fight all over again, because I will always fight for you Lena Luthor. Supergirl may be this city’s hero, but you are mine. You have saved me over and over again, even when you hated me, you saved me.”
Lena averts her gaze, fury still broiling in her chest. She doesn't remember everything, but this she does. She remembers Lex showing her everything before she killed him. She remembers walking into the game night with a bottle of wine, suppressing the urge to throw it at Kara. The lies stacked up and the hate simmering just below the surface. For the first time, she understood her brother’s madness and that made her hate Kara all the more.
Kara sighs and stands up. “I’m not leaving you. Shouldn’t knowing that you’re my wife give you an idea that we get past this?”
Lena remains silent and looks out the window. Kara sighs and goes back to her files. Eventually, Lena turns on the television as Kara types on her laptop. Lena can feel the tension she put between them, but until she remembers the solution to their fight, she is stuck with these feelings and these memories. Kara leaves to take a phone call and at some point, the nurse brings dinner for Lena. Kara returns with a turkey wrap for herself, apologizing that Lena can't have anything more appetizing and Lena studiously ignored her. Lena gets lost in her thoughts, searching the muddled corridors of her brain as she tries to remember anything. Suddenly the light of the bathroom clicks on and Lena is aware of how dark the room is and what it is approaching eleven o’clock. Kara returns with her pajamas on and folds down the couch to sleep on. Lena rolls over and clicks of the TV. The silence is intense and Lena and feels it settling over her like a suffocating weight.
“I love you, Lena. Even if we have to start over again, I will. I swore to you I would always be here, even if it was yourself you were afraid of. I will always protect you.” Kara whispers into the dark.
Lena falls asleep shortly after, dreaming of Kara’s arm around her as she tries so hard to hold herself together. Jack was dead and she had a strange mix of sadness and joy at Kara’s reassuring presence. Kara. Steady as a rock. Lena could let herself fall apart because Kara was there to build her back up. Kara was there when she fell apart on the balcony after Lex escaped. “You are not weak.” Kara had practically growled in her ear. That’s when Lena knew she was in love with her best friend. Not just a crush or loneliness that overtook her late at night. She was in Love.
Lena wakes slowly to the darkroom with tears damp on her cheeks. She felt so sad and angry because even on that balcony, Kara should have told her. Lena told Kara everything but Kara still didn’t tell her. Instead, she had to find out from the brother who had tried to have her killed multiple times. The brother she still tried to save, just to have him betray her again. Lena hears it then, the soft murmuring and slowly sits up to see Kara standing by the window, phone pressed to her ear. The moonlight illuminates the room and gives it a silvery-blue glow. Kara hasn’t noticed that she's awake so Lena lays back down.
“It’s just hard Alex. I know she's having nightmares. Her heart is thundering in her chest but I can’t hold her like I usually do…. Because, she's not my wife, not in her head. In her head right now she's just finding out about Supergirl and we are fighting again.... I’m hoping she remembers, the memories are coming, just slowly….. No, I can't tell her yet. It wouldn't mean anything to her.... Well yes, she'll be crushed of she remembers. No, when. When she remembers…. Yeah, I’ll let you know when we have a more definite release time. She has some physical therapy in the morning and they want to make sure she can stomach more solid foods…. I love you too, Alex. Goodnight.”
Lena tries to keep her breathing even because it's clear Kara doesn't she is awake. Soon she hears the quiet sobs of Kara crying. It breaks Lena’s heart and just as she is about to sit up she hears a siren in the distance. Then more. With a whoosh, the door opens and shuts and Kara is gone. Off to save people because she couldn’t save her wife. Lena cries herself back to sleep before Kara gets back.
The next day is tense. Lena still can’t bring herself to forgive Kara even though all her body wants is to be wrapped in her arms. Small moments keep coming back to her at the most unexpected times. Just flashes of the past five years and nothing in a particular order. Sam moving with her to National City, a date with James (cringe), a date with Kara (her cheeks hurt from smiling), helping save Sam from Reign, adopting a puppy from the shelter and Kara naming him Krypto after her lost home. Happy and sad intermingled as she went through three hours of painful stretching and walking in the physical therapy room with a very beautiful doctor that made Lena have to remind herself that she was married. She wasn’t the single woman that had woken up yesterday. It was easier now as the memories started to fall into place in her mind. But she also so clearly remembered the anger she felt for months as Kara had continued to lie to her about supergirl. It was so strong and she had no idea how her past self had gotten over it.
Kara was a steady presence throughout the whole day. She kept her distance though, trying to give Lena room to not feel pressured. But Lena kept catching Kara watching her. Making sure she was okay and not in pain. When the therapy was over and Lena had kept down a solid breakfast and lunch, the doctor said she was free to go. But go where? She had thought.
“Kara?”
“Yeah, ba-” Kara pauses and clears her throat. “Yeah, Lena?” Kara continues packing up her files and laptop before packing the duffle with their clothes in it. She had made sure Lena was in her, what she assumes was ‘her’, own pajamas and had her own blanket for her stay. Kara keeps busy but Lena knows she is very aware of everything Lena does.
“Where do we live?”
Kara pauses her work and gives Lena a soft smile. “A three-level condo at the top of a building you own. Well, I guess we own, you know the whole ‘what’s mine is yours’ marriage thing. Anyway, the rest is rent-controlled for L-Corp Employees.”
Lena remembers the big floor to ceiling windows that looked over the city, walking distance to the visible L-Corp building so she and her employees could either walk or ride to work, or even carpool, as one of her green initiatives for the company. Lena nods slowly and Kara can tell she remembered something. Maybe all this would take is gentle reminders here and there for Lena’s memory to come back. Getting her home would help also, at least that’s what the doctor said.
By three o'clock Lena s being rolled to the entrance in a wheelchair as Kara pulls the car upfront. Cameras flash at the entrance but Kara had hired a private security team to hold them back. Lena is glad she was able to at least put on jeans and one of Kara’s old sweatshirts instead of the pajamas. Kara pulls up in a car that looks remarkably similar to one Lena had drawn up last year, no wait, six years ago? Before she took over LexCorp. She had a suspicion it was her design which meant it was entirely electric and it made her happy to see something she had dreamed up had become a reality. There was probably much more but she was still reconciling memories to reality.
Kara helped her into the car with as little touching as possible while ignoring the shouted questions of the press. Kara had informed her earlier that Jess, her former assistant, now interim CEO and part-owner of L-Corp, had already made a statement that Lena had lost her memory due to the head injury but was quickly recovering both physically and mentally. She announced that Lena would be taking a temporary leave of absence but with full intentions of returning in two months time. Lena was relieved to know she hadn't just dreamed of promoting her loyal friend and confidant.
Kara drove her to a semi-familiar building and quietly led her up the elevator. She pressed the highest number and held her thumb to the button while it scanned her thumbprint and the light turned green. "Extra security," Kara mumbled. The elevator let out to a hallway with a single door. Kara input a password on the keypad and then placed her hand on a scanner beside the door and it also turned green. Lena remembers having it installed after a crazy stalker of Kara's had broken into their apartment and waited for them to get home. He wanted to take Kara’s brain for himself, or something just as crazy. Too bad he didn’t count on dealing with Supergirl and a Luthor.
Kara opens the door and ushers Lena in. Kara was watching Lena carefully and could see how that trip from the car as wearing on her. Kara planned to get Lena in bed straight away and make her favorite tea. She helps Lena to the couch while she takes their bags to the bedroom and unpacks. Lena looks around and takes in the space.
Memory after memory begins to trickle in as she takes in the pictures on the walls and the knick-knacks tucked between books on the shelves. The blanket Eliza made for them on the couch. The toy chest Alex made during her woodworking phase two years ago. The toy chest? Why did they need a toy chest?
Lena’s world crashes down on her then. She picks up the soft blue blanket and sees the little Danvers-Luthor stitched into it next to a green rattle. Lena runs her fingers over Eliza’s neat stitching and tears are already rolling down her cheeks. She remembers now.
She and Kara had tried the DEO’s experimental technology to use Kara’s DNA to merge with hers to create a child but it was still too early, even with Lena’s brain helping it was too expensive to keep trying after several failed attempts. They talked about an anonymous donor but Kara couldn’t carry the child and if Lena was honest, she didn’t want to have a baby with anyone but Kara. That left adoption. It also led to fights. Lena and Kara had such different experiences in their own lives. Lena was convinced it wouldn’t go well. In the end, Kara convinced her it was Lena’s chance to do better and Kara’s chance to share the love she was given.
After a year of waiting and paperwork and background checks, they just had to wait for a child to be matched with them. But that could take any time from three days to three months. Lena couldn’t cancel her trip to Hong Kong. The Opening of the L-Corp office there had been planned for three years. It seemed safe enough to just go for a week. Until Lena got a call on her third day from Kara that the Social worker was going to be coming in two days with a potential match. Lena immediately canceled her meetings and had the tech crew get her plane ready. It was self-flying and solar-powered, she just wanted it powered up by the time she got to the airfield. She smiled now at the time she and Kara flew to Katznia to confront Lex on an earlier model. It had taken a long time to get over but the lengths Lena went to protect Kara was comical.
But what happened to the one-year-old that had lost its parents in a car crash? What happened to that little brown-haired, blue-eyed baby girl? A sob racks Lena’s chest because now she remembers everything. She crushes the blanket to her chest and hunches over her knees.
She remembers the fights and the makeups. The 'I love you’s' and flowers and forehead kisses. The tension had built after the Supergirl confrontation to the point that they had a screaming match but then suddenly Kara was kissing her and Lena was pulling that stupid cape off. Right there in her office at three in the morning.
Lena was on her way home, almost there, when her plane was shot out of the sky and Kara was there to protect her, just like she always was.
Kara rushed in at the sound of Lena’s crying, taking in the blue blanket in her white-knuckled grasp. Suddenly Kara is cooing in her ear and her strong arms pull Lena back together from where she was breaking in half with her heart. They lost another child. Another chance at a family.
“Shhh… my love. It's okay. It’s okay. Madison went to another loving family. Oh, Lee. We will get another chance. This isn't the end. So many children out there need love” Kara continues reassuring her until Lena can manage to even out her breathing.
“What happened?”
“They didn’t have the funding to wait to place her, and with you, in the hospital, we couldn’t prove to be a suitable home. The woman understood and told me to call her when we were ready again. We won’t have to start over.”
“But I wasn’t here! How did you even handle this on your own?”
Kara cringes. She handled it about as well as Lena was. She fell down right in the entryway, clutching the blanket as the Social Worker carried the baby away. She sobbed until she lost track of time and cried because she should have been at the hospital for her wife. Instead of saying all that she swallows.
“I cried. But I had you to worry about. You are my priority, Lena.”
Lena nestles into Kara, exhausted and just wanting to sleep. Kara’s warm hands rub up and down her arm as Lena cries softly.
“So I take it you’re not mad at me anymore?” Kara asks. Lena laughs wetly and rubs under her nose and her cheeks.
“No. No, I remembered everything.”
“Everything?” Kara teases, Lena elbows her softly.
“Yes, everything. But can I have some tea? This has been a rough forty-eight hours. And my head still hurts.”
Kara laughs a real laugh that is music to Lena’s ears.
“Yeah tell me about it. Come on. I got pretty far ahead on work over the past couple of days, so I took the next two weeks off. Just you and me. And several pints of ice cream to cry this out.” Kara moves to stand up, Lena grips her arm and holds her down. Kara’s forehead crinkles in the very way Lena missed. It felt like she had relieved the past five years and that this huge gulf had separated her from today and just two weeks ago when she had left on her trip.
“I love you. So much. Even when I didn’t know you, you kept all of our memories safe and brought me back to you. You kept all of your vows to me and made me love you even when I was angry. I know this was a setback, and it's going to be hard. You, Kara Danvers-Luthor, are my hero.”
“I will always protect you.”
They sat like that for a few minutes before curiosity overcame Lena.
“What happened to whoever shot my plane?”
“They may or may not have spent the night in the DEO sensory deprivation chamber. Not the goon that was hired but the rival CEO. Frank Chang, I think? The American born son of the former CEO in Hong Kong that you were competing with. Alex dealt with him after that. I was a little too angry to pay much attention other than taking him on the scariest flight of his life.” Lena chuckles at her wife's antics.
“And how were you there? When the plane exploded?”
“I was too amped up so I thought I’d fly along and make sure you got home safe. I just got distracted by…” Kara trails off.
“By what?” Lena arches an eyebrow.
“By what I wanted to do to you as soon as the plane landed.” Kara blushes and Lena thinks its cute, even after all these years. “I was really excited and… umm… well… a bit horny after so long without you.
Its Lena’s turn to laugh out loud and Kara delights in it. “Soon, my love. Soon. You can give me an idea once I’ve been cleared by the doctor. For now, take me to bed and cuddle me?” Lena asks.
“As you wish,” Kara smirks.
“Rao, You watched it again didn’t you?” Lena asks
“Well, how else am I supposed to protest that stupid remake?” Kara exclaims. Lena just rolls her eyes as Kara sweeps her into a bridal style carry with ease.
“All right Dread Pirate. Just don’t let the Rodents of Unusual Size get me.”
“As you wish.”
You stole my heart (I don't think I can take it back)
(A/N): some supercorp fluff.
Pairings: Kara Danvers x Lena Luthor
Summary: Kara sings a love song, Lena misunderstands everything and James wants an answer. The College AU where it's Valentine's Day and Kara is singing love songs in exchange for money to the new newspaper project.
Word count: 1341
AO3
“It’s her”, James said and sighed.
Kara looked at the many students without  kwoning what to look for. The first person with the deepest green eyes, according to her friend, that Kara could remember was Lucy Lane, her sister’s roommate also bartender of the best cafeteria frequented by National City University students. Does James have a crush on Lucy? That woudn’t be weird. Lucy was no doubt funny and very attractive - although Kara thinks she’s a pain in the ass sometimes. A true friend however. James and Lucy would be a nice couple that is to say if James was talking about her. It was already the fourth sigh Kara heard from her friend and all she could do was lean slightly to get the line out of her vision and see who was in that shift. Strange. It wasn’t Lucy. Wasn't the morning shift hers? Who else could James be talking about? Imra? No, James is her classmate. Unless he was talking about… No.
“Who?” Please don't say her, please don't say her.
“In the line, her”, he sighed again and Kara honestly couldn't stand it anymore. Who is he? A fifteen-year-old teenager?
But then she sighed too. The person who kept James's eyes stuck since they got in the place, was not a bartender, os but was waiting to order her coffee just like them but a bit further ahead in the line. She had her attention swallowed by a book held by one hand while the other takes care to pull the long black hair strands away from her face. Oh no. You got to be kidding me. Lena Luthor. The same girl Kara had a huge crush ever since. Or at least since she joined NCU. Also her bedroom door neighbor.
"Do you have a crush on her?" The blonde tried to be more discreet, but this was not one of the best places for such a revelation also not the best moment to control her feelings.
“Speak lower!”, James’s eyes widened in an expression Kara would find funny in another moment. “Do you have a problem with that?”
YES!
"No, I don't", disregarding all the time he judged her by her last name, of course. What's different now? "Why would I?
"For no reason", he scratched the back of his neck and raised his eyebrows, Kara knew what was coming. "So... You're still going to do me that, aren't you?"
"Do what?"
Holding a guitar on her back it was something hard to forget, but Kara could not stop trying to escape the situation even more after she knew who she would be singing a love song for in exchange for some money. If anyone asked, the new university newspaper project really was in need of money and even at risk of not happening. And who else would be hero but Kara? And why not take the Valentine’s Day to get some cash? Damn Valentine’s Day.
“You know, that thing you and Winn are doing today for the new project?”
“I, huh… Of course I’ll do it” she laughed almost like a maniac, James was a little scared.
“Are you sure?” he asked suspicious.
“Why not? Earlier today I played a valentine’s song to Alex. I doubt anything is stranger than that.”
“Alright then… One more thing”, he reached into his backpack pocket to give a red heart-shaped card in Kara's hands. “What are you waiting for?” James looked at her impatiently.
“Nothing, I’m on it. I’m on it”, she laugh again and turned to her new victim.
Golly! Why is she doing this again?
Kara held the card tight in her hands looking at James' calligraphy right in the center. There was just the question would you go on a date with me? a place and a number that represented the day of tomorrow by the night. James, at least, could have been less cheesy. Jesus, she would do it better than this. She took a deep breath more than once before  looking at the girl who had already received her order and was in the back of the cafeteria. How embarrassing would that be? Couldn’t she fake a faint? No. It was a promise. Kara never broke a promise. And James was paying her of course. Maybe she was so focused on the book that she would not even realize the music was for her. Come on, Kara. Lena would obviously notice. How unlucky Winn not be here this time. The blonde had been standing in the middle of the road so long that she could feel the look of her friend making a hole in her back. You should be doing this today, Kara. When Kara finally removed the guitar from the cover, James's relief seemed almost visible in the air. Did he think she would give up? Kara never gave up on anything. She really wanted this time though. But no. She moved on with the guitar already thinking to which university she could transfer. How could she look at Lena’s face again after this?
Already in front of the table of her neighbor's door she started the firsts music chords of Thinking Out Loud releasing the attention of the other girl in the book which seemed her only object of interest besides her coffee. Lena watched her with a surprised look and her face was filled with an intense blush. Kara hoped she would at least not get mad the aspiring reporter certainly thought her chances with Lena were now possibly none. She finished the song and threw the card on Lena’s table not even giving the engineering student time to react to the scene. Kara immediately ran away to outside the establishment without having the chance to hear some applause that came around and let alone witness the shy smile that was on the face of the girl for whom James unfortunately had a crush.
The blonde found the boy outside, holding two coffees and an expectation that Kara could not even look at.
“You did it so good, Kara, thank you very much. Do you think she will say yes?” He asked with a huge smile for Kara.
“You’re welcome”, Kara tried to answer by hiding the storm of emotions she felt with false enthusiasm and a laugh. Because of course she would be the help to get together her friend and the girl for whom she fell for. “I’m sure she will.”
No wonder Alex sometimes said she was a too good person.
*
Much later, walking briskly down the hallway of the dorm, Kara hoped to succeed in her plan to avoid Lena. She saw the door in front of her closed. The engineering student still had to be in the last few minutes of class giving Kara enough time to hide in her bedroom before she would come. Kara knew she couldn’t avoid her forever, but she would try for as long as possible. She grabbed the door handle of her bedroom, relieved that she could finally rest from the rush that had been her day torn between playing countless songs and running away from Lena, when a voice stopped all her thoughts.
“You never gave me a chance to let you know my answer."
The blonde turned instantly to face Lena propped on her own door, offering a smile amused by the mess that was Kara herself. Was Lena all this time in her bedroom?
“Oh, yes”, the journalism student laughed, losing control of her words that seemed to stuck in her throat.
“You know, I'd really love to go on a date with you, Kara," Lena smiled and winked at the blonde before opening her room and entering.
Kara could only smile as her stomach flipped and her heart stuttered in her chest. Lena want to go on a date with me. Lena want to go on a dat-
Oh golly. Was the card not signed?
How would she tell this to James?
Hii... Can I ask for #32 (Supercorp)?
I know I’ve been doing these angst prompts as more comedy, but … I hope you’re ready for some angst because this is some serious feels!
Takes place at the end of season three - assuming that Lena and James were never together, Sam is back to normal and in a relationship with Alex, and that Lena’s known about Kara being Supergirl for a while.
It’s sad, y'all.
As always, please let me know what you think! (even if it involves yelling)
Especially if it involves yelling
Leaving You Is All I Have Left
Lena hears the thump of Supergirl landing on her office balcony, but she doesn’t turn -  only squares her shoulders to brace for the inevitable and continues packing away the files on her desk.
She could have had Jess or Sam pack them up and ship them to Metropolis after she’s left; but she needs this.
Needs to physically go through the motions of turning the page on this chapter of her life.
Otherwise, she doesn’t think any of this will seem real.
She hears the balcony door open and close, but still she doesn’t turn.
She isn’t going to make this any easier on Kara than she has to.
Lena’s felt so many things in these past few days - hurt, anger, betrayal … loss.
She thinks Kara deserves to feel a few of those too.
A month ago she would have sacrificed anything to keep her friend from feeling even a fraction of the anguish she’s felt.
But now …
Well, now things have changed.
“I came to say goodbye.” Kara’s voice cuts through her thoughts, and she does turn now - turns to see Kara in her full Supergirl regalia - looking small and timid in a way that Lena’s never quite seen.
She quickly forces down any thoughts of pity, taking in the crinkle in Kara’s brow; the way her eyes shift and her fingers play with the thumbs of her uniform.
She examines the superhero the way she would size up a chess opponent for take down; looking for tells, looking for fear.
“Well, Supergirl, I suppose this is goodbye then.” She drawls it out, like it’s the most casual thing in the world, like she isn’t fighting back the tears threatening to prick her eyes.
Because curt words and quick brush offs would just let Kara know how much she’s hurting, how much she cares.
She does, of course - she cares so deeply for the woman in front of her that she can feel it in her soul; can feel it twisting through her gut like a car driving too fast on a mountain road, destined to crash.
But that’s the point, isn’t it?
They were always destined to crash.
A Super and Luthor.
And maybe Lena had hopes that they would be star-crossed lovers; destined against the odds to fall together in some sort of cosmic fate.
She knows now that that fantasy isn’t true.
That any hope she felt was a cruel joke of the universe.
She isn’t meant to be loved.
With finality, she turns back to her desk, leaving Kara to study her.
But if her former friend is looking for weakness; she won’t find any. Lena has been through this too many times -  has been betrayed so often by those she thought she was close to that she knows exactly how to shut herself off.
Evolution, she supposes.
Self-preservation.
“I don’t want to, you know.” Kara finally speaks, and Lena straightens -  hands stilling.
“Don’t want to what?”
“Say goodbye.”
Kara’s voice is choked, and Lena knows without looking that she’s struggling at holding back tears. She refuses to let it affect her.
“And yet here you are.”
“Lena … “
Something snaps inside her, and Lena does turn then, crossing her arms and leaning against her desk.
“What did you expect, Kara, that you would come here and give me some sob story and I would suddenly change my mind? That I would cancel my plans and drop everything to stay here with you? You, who couldn’t even bother to tell me your true identity after years of friendship; who couldn’t even manage to trust me when it was most important. Who went behind my back and had people break into my lab … you used the Luthor name against me, Kara, do you know how much that hurts?”
Kara flinches.
“Lena -“
Lena can feel her facade crumbling, the list of accusations meant to neddle at Kara also serving to prick holes in her cool exterior.
“You were the best friend I had since -“ she swallows. “You were the best friend I ever had. I loved you Kara. I would have died for you. I would have given you … anything you ever asked for.” She can feel the tears streaming down her face, can see them reflected on Kara’s own; but she’s too far gone to care.
“I would have taken the beating heart of my chest and handed it to you if you’d asked for it. But instead you went around leading a double life and then you stabbed me in the back.”
“Lena -“
“It’s over, Kara.” She turns back to her desk, unable to meet blue eyes any longer.
“Lena, please just - “
“I told you Kara, I’m not staying.”
“Then let me go with you.”
She can’t help but bark a laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.
“To Metropolis?” She scoffs.
“I can find a job there, the Daily planet just opened a new office in midtown.”
“And I’m sure your other identity would just love flying around, saving the day with Superman. What do you think he would see if he knew you were here now? Begging on your knees in that short skirt?”
There’s silence for a moment before Kara speaks again.
“I would give it up. For you, I would give it up.”
Lena whirls back around, surprised to see nothing but complete seriousness in Kara’s eyes.
“You would give up being Supergirl.”
“I took on the mantle of Supergirl to save someone I love. I would give it up to save someone I love too. Because I love you, Lena. I know that my actions haven’t always seemed …” She trails off. "I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
“Myself.”
The confession settles in Lena’s stomach like a hot ball of lead, uncomfortable and burning with truth.
The most truth she’s gotten from Kara in weeks.
“I don’t really like her sometimes.” Kara continues, and Lena has a little trouble following.
“Who?”
“Supergirl. She’s … She has a god complex. And sometimes she only sees things in black and white, and she’s too easily swayed by logic and justice when she should be more worried about helping people, and the things that really matter. Frankly, she’s kind of …”
“A bitch?” Lena offers, and they both share a small smile.
“Yeah a bitch.” Kara’s brow crinkles and her eyes bore into Lena’s. “But with you, I didn’t have to be Supergirl - I didn’t have to think about the greater good, and saving the world, and my mandate to protect the earth. I could just be Kara.”
She takes a shuddering breath before continuing.
“But then, you were spending more time with Supergirl, and seeing the parts of me I didn’t want you to see, and - and everything just went to …”
“Shit?” Lena offers again, but this time there’s no smile, only a long moment of silence.
"I have no excuses.” Kara finally says. “As much as I’d like to blame Supergirl and separate our actions, I betrayed you, and for that I am truly, deeply sorry. And if I need to give up Supergirl for you to see that … then I will. I wouldn’t think twice about it.”
As much as that small part of Lena is screaming at her to take Kara up on her offer -  or to drop everything and stay - she knows that isn’t what’s best for either of them.
They need time, and space, and as much as it breaks her heart to say it; sometimes no matter how much you love someone, it isn’t enough.
But then again, sometimes it is.
“You should stay in National City.” She says, and Kara’s face falls. “They need a hero, and you need to work on being a hero that you can be proud of.”
Kara nods, gravely accepting Lana’s words, even as fresh tears fill the once dried tracks.
“You could stay?” Kara pleads, eyes shiny and voice thick.
“I have been away from Metropolis far too long.” Lena almost chokes on the sorrow clutching her throat. “And there are things I need to get back to there. I stayed here, because I had a reason to - I had hoped … I had hoped things would be different. But now I see they’re not.”
The defeat on Kara’s face is devastating.
“I suppose I should go then, and let you pack.”
She’s halfway through the door before Lena breaks, her voice cracking.
“I have a board meeting in National City at the end of the quarter. If you want to grab lunch while I’m in town …” She trails off, but feels her heart lighten slightly at the hint of a sad smile quirking Kara’s cheek.
“I wouldn’t miss it.”
Lena nods swiftly, biting her cheeks to hold back the sobs. She turns back to her desk, holding stock still for a long moment, knowing Kara is still watching her.
“I will always love you, Lena.” Kara promises firmly, and it takes every bit of Lena’s willpower not to run to the other woman’s arms.
She fights it for a long time, long enough that Kara’s departure sends the papers on her desk fluttering.
She isn’t even sure if the superhero can hear her when she finally whispers -
“I love you too, Kara.”
Thicker Than Water, Ch. 4 of ?
Watching Lena die got harder with every loop.
The day after Lena woke up, Cadmus issued its latest announcement-- Lena Luthor was dead. The talking head dissolved into video footage of Lena gagged and bound to her chair in the boathouse. The picture of rationality, Lex offered her one final out.
Will you help me?
And then, with tears spilling down her cheeks, Lena shook her head no.
Alex watched with her heart in her throat as the camera zoomed in on the knife hefted by the man behind her. It disappeared behind her, and when Lex pulled back, Lena's eyes widened sharply, then closed tight in agony.
If she didn't know better, Alex could spot the flaws in the camerawork. She could see where some could argue it was faked. The knife was out of the camera's view, so how could anyone know for sure?
But then the goon stepped around Lena with blood on his hands, and kicked her into the water. That, no one could fake. Not the split second of panic before the water closed over Lena's head, or the bubbles that trailed up, then stilled.
The talking head returned.
"To the aliens of National City: your champions are dead.”
A picture of Supergirl’s fall flashed across the screen, blurred but unmistakable.
“Run-- hide. Scurry back to your holes and sewers. Now, Cadmus comes for you."
The feed cut off, returning their screens to black. Alex only just managed to reach the bathroom before her stomach emptied. When her stomach calmed, she re-emerged to find Winn hovering outside.
"Alex…?"
"Burn a copy of that onto a flashdrive," she dismissed coldly, pushing past him. "And somebody tell me how the hell they're still hacking into the emergency broadcast!"
She managed to keep it from Kara and Lena for almost a day. But Kara was already regaining her superhearing, and the DEO echoed with whispers. She demanded to see the video, and Winn never could withstand her glares, not even when she looked so haggard.
Kara immediately started to shake. She made it barely a step back towards Lena's room when her eyes rolled back in her head and she went down.
Alex had half a mind to murder Winn the moment he told her what happened, but his expressive guilt promised he already felt far worse than anything she could do to him. Instead she finally allowed Kara and Lena’s beds to move into the same medbay, so that when Kara woke, Lena could be the first thing she saw, with her heart monitor beeping steadily away.
The problem with Kara knowing, however, was that it meant Lena knew. Within an hour of Lena first asking what was wrong, Winn had shown her too-- this time with Alex's blessing and James' assistance.
That steady beep of the heart monitor jolted unevenly when the blade hit its mark, and started to race when video-Lena disappeared into the water. Alex watched her carefully, but Lena's features remained frozen in a neutral expression even as her hands shook.
"All the major media outlets in the city have received copies of the wharf footage," James warned. Wharf footage. Alex liked that. It hinted at nothing it contained, the death it flirted with. The intimate moment in which the realization of one's death was so clearly writ across a person’s features.
Lena didn't respond. Alex couldn't discern a single reaction from her, and the stillness was quickly growing worrisome.
“We've tried to keep it off the air," he continued, "putting pressure where we can, but some people are running it regardless, and it's already hit the internet. CatCo has issued a statement that it continues to hope for your safe return, and has focused its news stories on the public’s reaction to the hack.”
“What do you mean?” Kara asked.
“Donations to alien shelters and food banks have increased by 30% in the past 24 hours. A vigil was held outside L-Corp last night, and intends to resume tonight at Millenial Park to accommodate growing numbers. Lex’s video has pulled Lena's supporters from the woodwork, and tipped a lot of holdouts over the line into Lena’s camp.”
"Has there been an attack yet?" Lena asked, her voice low.
James shook his head. "Not yet. But the city is bracing itself. People are scared."
Alex watched Lena carefully in the quiet that followed. She could feel Kara stewing, her gaze bouncing between Lena, the dark screen of the television, and her own lap. The longer her eyes lingered on Lena, the more her lips started to tremble.
“James…”
James straightened at the sound of Lena's voice. Her head finally lifted, revealing the fire burning in her eyes.
"Get me in front of a camera. I have a message for my brother."
“Excuse me? What do you mean it’s a girl?”
Y/N [8:34]: I forgot to ask for your address!
“Mom, I’m gay.” She admits.
“No, you’re not. God, this is just a phase. Lena Kieran Luthor, you’re not going on that date. What does she even look like?” She snaps at her daughter with a look of disgust.
“She’s beautiful, mother. And I am a grown woman who can make decisions for herself.” She snaps.
Lex walks in and peeks his head in. “What’s going on here?”
“Your sister has a date.” Lillian narrows her eyes at Lena.
“Ooo! What’s his name?” He laughs.
“With a girl.” Her mother grits through her teeth.
“I’m sorry, what? Is this some type of weird female thing?” He asks.
Lena rolls her eyes and pushes past both of them.
“Lena Luthor, get back here,” Lillian growls.
“And if I don’t listen?” She tests.
“Then you’re cut off and out of this house.” Lillian states.
She rolls her eyes and walks downstairs. Her mother and brother follow, of course, they did.
“Lena Kieran Luthor, you take another step towards that door and you’re out.” She barks.
“I have a meeting at L. Corp in thirty minutes! I’ve already had to reschedule this one on your accord, mother.” She scoffs.
“...I will know if you go out on that date.” She scowls.
“And stay away from the protests! I wouldn’t want anything to happen to my dear sister.” Lex says innocently.
“What does that have to do with anything?!” She groans.
Lena grabs her jacket and storms out, slamming the door behind her.
~~~~~~~~~~~ℒ ~~~~~~~~~~~
Lena sighs and sits behind her desk at L. Corp. Her thumb is hovering over your contact. She presses the call button.
“Hello?”
“Hi… It’s Lena.” She says.
“I know who you are, Ms. Hard to get.” You chuckle. “What’s up?”
“I’m going to have to call the date off tonight… I have… some meetings running late tonight. I’m so sorry I forgot.” She explains.
“Awe, well that’s okay. Maybe we can do something after the protests if you’d like. That’s if you’re still up to go to one of those.” You say softly.
“Sounds great.” She tries her best to sound happy.
“Great.” You giggle.
“Ms. Luthor, your 9:45 has shown up.” Jess peeks her head in.
“Right, thank you, Jess.”
“I’ve got to go, I’ll talk to you later.”
“Bye.” You chuckle.
She hangs up and sighs.
~~~~~~~~~~~ℒ ~~~~~~~~~~~
The meeting seemed to go on for an eternity. She looks over at the clock and sighs. It’s only been an hour… She feels horrible for lying to you. She sits in her office watching time tick by minute by minute. It isn’t until Kara knocks on her door that she snaps out of her thoughts.
“Lena? You okay?” She asks.
“Ms. Danvers, what a lovely surprise.” She smiles, avoiding the question.
Kara smiles. “I brought you some lunch.”
“Gods, thank you. I’m starving.” She chuckles.
The brunette gets up and walks over to her couch, motioning for Kara to join her. They sit there eating in a deafening silence.
“Lena… What’s up? Something’s on your mind.” Kara questions softly.
“Hm..? Oh, nothing.” She snaps out of her daze.
“Come on, I know you better than that.” Kara puts her hand on Lena’s shoulder.
“Just family drama, don’t worry.” She brushes it off.
Kara decides she shouldn’t push too hard if her friend isn’t comfortable sharing.
The Next Day
You wake up and look over at the time, groaning. You woke up one minute before your alarm was supposed to go off. Letting out a loud sigh, you get up and ready for the day and the protests. Once you’re ready, you walk out to your kitchen to make some food (you chose to make potstickers). While they’re in the microwave, you turn your phone on and decide to text Lena.
“Hello?” She answers.
“Heyyy. Are you still up for the protests today?” You ask while getting your food out of the microwave.
“Mm. Yeah.” She says hesitantly.
“Is something wrong? You sounded a bit hesitant there. Are you okay?” You worry.
“What? Yeah, everything is fine. I’m fine. I’m just tired, that’s all.” She lies.
“Did I wake you up? I’m so sorry-”
“No you didn’t. Don’t worry, I just went to bed late last night, that’s all.” She cuts you off.
“Oh. Okay, well… I’ll see you soon.” You chuckle lightly.
“Alright. Bye.”
“Bye, Ms. Hard to get.”
You hang up.
“Weird..” You mumble but shrug it off and start eating.
~~~~~~~~~~~ℒ ~~~~~~~~~~~
You pull up about half a block away from where you’ll be and get out to meet up with the rest of your friends, Adrianna is already with you. You two walk up and see Lena’s friends there talking to them.
“Hey! Glad you made it.” You greet them.
“Yeah! We wouldn’t miss this for the world.” Kara chuckles.
You smile and you have to ask, “Where’s Lena?”
“I’m not sure, we were kind of wondering if she was with you.” Alex looks a bit confused.
“I’m sure she’ll turn up sooner or later,” Katie assures you guys.
You all nod and you begin explaining what you guys normally do and what normally happens. You warn them that people do tend to get violent towards you guys, but they say it’s no big deal.
After about an hour of protesting, there’s still no sign of Lena. Kara checks her watch and glances over at you.
“It’s been an hour…” She states and you nod. A small look of hurt flashes across your face; Kara smiles at you reassuringly.
“I’m going to go try to call her.”
Kara hands her sign to Alex, “I’ll come with.”
You nod and hand your sign to David.
~~~~~~~~~~~ℒ ~~~~~~~~~~~
“Mom, why is someone’s skin colour such a big deal?! That has nothing to do with their personality!” Lena argues.
“They’re violent people, Lena.” She sighs.
“So what, someone’s pigmentation now affects their personality? Do your research, mother. You can’t stop me from going to the protest.” She growls.
“I rather not kick my daughter to the streets, so I’d advise you not to.” She fights.
Lena’s phone rings, interrupting both of them. She glares at her mom and walks to her room.
“Hello?” She answers as calm as possible.
“Lena? Where are you?” Kara asks.
“I got… caught up with some things. I’m sorry.” She bites her lip to hold back her tears.
Her mother barges into her room. “How dare you walk out on your mother.”
She quickly hangs up the phone.
~~~~~~~~~~~ℒ ~~~~~~~~~~
“What the hell was that?” You ask.
“Sounded like her mom…” Kara bites the inside of her cheek.
“...Is that a bad thing?” Your eyebrows furrow.

“Wow, didn’t expect you to be up so early,” Kara noted in surprise.  She shut the door to your cell with a relatively loud clank and handed you a Styrofoam to-go box and a cup of coffee.  She sat down next to you with her own breakfast as you opened yours. “Didn’t sleep well,” you mumbled and then nodded at the food.  “Thanks.” “No problem.  You should probably eat about 3000 calories a day once you start moving around more.  It keeps your energy up.” “Jesus.” “Oh, don’t act like that’s a bad thing,” the blonde scoffed.  “I know about a hundred people who would kill to do that.” She had gotten you some kind of ridiculous breakfast platter; it included scrambled eggs, toast, sausage links, bacon, and a heaping pile of hash-browns.  The box contained more food than you usually found time to consume in a day. “So, what’s on the schedule today?” “Flying; you seem like you could use a bit of fresh air since you’ve been cooped up in here.” “I’m allowed to fly?” you frowned and took a bite of food.  “I figured you guys wouldn’t want me doing that.” “As long as you’re smart about it, you’ll never have to buy another gallon of gas again.” Huh, you thought to yourself, not a bad deal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “The DEO just owns a whole desert?” “Yep,” Kara nodded and surveyed the barren land, “we need a space for weapon tests, artillery training, shooting ranges, alien extraction—“ “Right, I got it,” you cut her off and wiped the sweat from your brow.  “Let’s get this over with.” “Watch the attitude,” the blonde warned.  You nodded your apology and waited expectantly for her to go on.  “Okay, so the first to keep in mind is that you should have your arms outstretched and your fists clenched.  It helps with the aerodynamics.” “Got it.” “You also don’t have to, like, jump to take off.  A little push is all you need or else you’re going to crack whatever surface you’re standing on.” “Right.” “Go ahead and try it,” she encouraged and took a step back.  You watched as she sprung up into the air with a little puff of dust.  Kara looked down at you and waited for you to join her. With a deep breath, you bent your knees and put your closed fists towards the sky.  In less than a second, you had shot up past Kara and her hand grabbing your leg was the only thing keeping you from rocketing into the sky. “Thanks,” you hovered in front of her unsteadily as the wind whipped your hair around your face.  “I guess I overshot it a bit.” “That’s okay, you’re learning.” “You sound like a kindergarten teacher.” “Well, in terms of training, I’d say that you’re at least in first grade.” “Fuck off, Kara.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Agent Danvers, get your team assembled and get to the extraction site.  Intel says that Lillian might be on the move soon.” “Damn it,” Alex rose from her computer and stared at J’onn in shock.  “Why the hell is she moving?  Are they onto us.” “None of our observation team agents have reported being seen.  Lillian’s a smart woman; she knows that it isn’t safe to stay in one place for long.” “Have you told Kara?” “She’s out in the desert with Y/N.  You’ll have to radio her in and have her meet you there.  The trucks are waiting outside; get going.” Alex breathed out an irritated sigh and headed towards the exit.  She hated going on a mission before her team was ready.  It left far too many opportunities for things to go wrong and putting her agents out on the line like that wasn’t something she was comfortable with. “Kara?” Alex touched the device mounted on her ear and waited for her sister’s reply.  “Lillian’s going to be on the move soon.  We have to act now.” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “I’m coming.” Kara realized that you had been able to hear Alex’s voice and shook her head. “Y/N, no.” “You can’t leave me out here on my own and you heard what your sister said; time isn’t a luxury here.  I’m not letting you do this without me.” Kara could see the absolute determination in your eyes and knew she didn’t have time to argue.  With a strong feeling of unease, she sighed and grabbed your arm tightly. “Follow me and don’t do anything unless I tell you to.  Got it?” “Yep.” You waited for her to blast off and then raced after her; cutting through the air in a pattern of sporadic turns.  Soon enough, you were out of the desert and speeding over National City.  Cars and skyscrapers blurred together with the grid of streets below, but you paid no mind to the impressive view.  You needed all your focus to keep up with Kara.  She had somehow managed to dawn her Supergirl suit mid-flight and the fluttering red cape served as a beacon for you to follow. In less than 30 seconds, you had crossed the entire city and rugged forest filled the land below.  Kara seemed to be slowing down, as if she was listening to something, and you decided to take off your glasses and listen too.  Still following the blonde, you searched the ground for any sort of establishment or sign of inhabitation. “Are we close?” you called ahead. “I think so.” “What’s the plan, then?” “You do nothing.  Just stay where I tell you to and watch.” “Whatever,” you muttered.  Suddenly, Kara came to a complete stop and you slammed into her in the air.  “Sorry!” “It’s okay,” Kara assured you while you untangled yourself from her cape.  “We’re headed down there.” You followed her gesture towards black building that practically blended in with the dark foliage around it.   “Let’s land in the trees outside the base and I’ll find a spot for you to stay until it’s over.” Begrudgingly, you followed her descent and, more or less, crashed through the branches and leaves until you were on the ground.  Kara couldn’t help but chuckle as you landed on your back and quickly brushed the foliage from your clothes. “Smooth,” she noted.  You glared up at her and got to your feet. “What now?” “Stay here until I come back for you.” With that, Kara took off and disappeared in a split second, leaving you alone in the forest.   ----------------------------------------------------------------- You managed to sit down and mind your own business for almost 10 minutes before the sound of gunshots made it too hard.  With astonishing speed that you still weren’t used to, you made your way to the clearing and squinted as Kara had taught you towards the building.  Your vision flickered for a few seconds before it penetrated the walls of the building and revealed the inside to you. What lay inside was chaos.  You could see Kara and her sister fighting off a group of guards in a long corridor, while other DEO agents were spread out and pinned down by fire.  Your heart began to pound at the thought of them failing and allowing Lillian to escape.  You scanned the building’s interior and lost hope with every room that you cleared. But then, you found her.  Every muscle in your body tightened and heat seamed to surge through your veins. Steel screeched and warped as you shot through wall after wall; fists outstretched.  Your vision switched back to normal once you knew you were on the right path and finally, you burst through the last wall. Debris fell at your feet as you skidded to a halt and stared down the woman who had caused you so much pain.  Who had caused Lena so much pain.  The familiar warm tingle of your heat vision threatened to take over, but you shook it away and stalked towards the petrified woman.  For once, Lillian was showing her fear. “Miss me?” you asked.  A rage built inside you, stronger than you had ever felt.  If it hadn’t been directed at Lillian, it would have scared you.  She, however, was the one person that deserved it. “They saved you?  H-how on Earth did they—“ “How on Earth?” you laughed.  “I’m not from Earth anymore.  You certainly made sure of that, didn’t you?”   The smile slipped from your face as you raced forward and grabbed her by the neck.  You could feel her pulse through your fingers and it was racing incredibly fast.   “Don’t,” she choked out.   What a perfect way to practice control; seeing how slowly you could tighten your grip until it was enough to choke the life out of her. “Y/N, stop!” Kara’s voice interrupted your thoughts and you snapped your neck around to see her stepping through the hole in the wall you had made. “Stay back, or I swear to God I’ll snap her neck,” you warned her.  The malice in your voice alarmed both yourself and the blonde across the way. “You don’t want to do this,” she said softly.  Kara stepped forward lightly and put her hands out non-threateningly.  “Y/N, this isn’t you.  You aren’t a killer.” “I could be,” you argued, “because of her.”   Lillian struggled lightly under your hands and you tightened them. “Think about Lena.  How are you going to face her if you do this?” “Kara, don’t!” you cried, tears welling in your eyes.  “She sent me to kill Lena.  If I let her live, she’s just going to come back a-and try again.” “Not this time,” Kara replied gently.  “Y/N, just let her go and I promise you that she won’t be able to hurt anyone ever again.  You have to trust me.” Your grip faltered for a moment.  Lena’s face flashed through your mind and took you back to the night all of your lies had fallen apart and the two of you had fled the city. “Have you ever killed anybody?” Your eyes widened at the question and your stomach clenched at the way Lena was staring at you.  Suddenly aware that you might be what was scaring her, you quickly reached behind yourself, pulled your gun out of it’s hiding place— “Y/N?” Kara’s voice pulled you out of the memory and you clenched your eyes shut.  Slowly, you managed to remove your fingers from Lillian’s neck and took two very shaky steps backwards.  The rage that had filled your system had slowly shifted to panic.  Your eyes flashed open and scanned the room wildly.   You needed to leave. “Y/N?” Kara asked again.  The blonde took a step near you and that was enough to make you snap. With another burst of dust and debris, you flew straight through the ceiling and out into the bright sunlight.
Finally haha!.  Sorry for the wait guys, but let me know what you think and what you want to see next!  Thanks for reading!

You’re going to wish you were dead, instead.
Part 4 of T is for Trauma - The Series
Supercorp, Kara Danvers x Daughter!Reader, Lena Luthor x Daughter!Reader
Word count: 2370.
Warnings: kidnapping. Injuries. Next level angst.
Previously on the series – part 1, part 2, part 3
You open your eyes when someone kicks your stomach twice. You can’t control the vomit that comes right after, when your body finally understands that you’re up.
“Gross! Boss! The child threw up on my feet.” He walks away from you.
You want to appreciate that fact that you just did something to one of them, but everything hurts so much, like your skin is being peeled off of your body, that right now your only wish is that you could just die already so you don’t have to feel this unbearable pain anymore. Never in your worst nightmares, you’ve imagined you could feel so much pain you would wish you were dead instead.
“Stupid shit doesn’t die of over-exposure. It’s been hours! Maybe we should just shoot her, so she can bleed out to death.” One of them says and you pray they’re being serious.
“Please.” You plead. “End this.”
The boss kneels in front of you, with a creepy satisfied smile on his face. He looks behind him, to the other guys, and starts laughing like you just told the funniest joke in the world. His goons start laughing with him.
“I’m not going to end this. I wouldn’t want to stop all this fun you’re having!” He stands up, the same creepy smile still on his lips. “You know, you Kryptonians are funny. You act like Gods deciding everyone’s fate with some kind of morality no one even knows if you actually have. So, you’re ok with putting us through pain, but you can’t take any?”
“They are some weak Gods.” One of his henchmen says, and he looks back like he is telling him to shut up.
“Your world exploded for a reason. No kryptonian was supposed to survive. But then Supergirl and Superman came to Earth. Now, they are here dictating rules, expecting everyone to follow them. Who do they think they are? Those cockroaches.” He spits on the floor next to you, and you feel saliva hitting your face. “They’re not even supposed to exist, let alone procreate.”
“Then what are you waiting for?” You whimper, and he gives his maniac laughter again.
“I’ll do you a solid though, just because you’re just a little kid.” He raises a hand and quickly one of his goons puts a gun in his hand. He points at your leg. “I’ll make a little hole, to accelerate your dying process, ‘kay?” And he shoots your leg.
You scream as loud as you can, with all the strength still left in you. You thought you were already in so much pain because of the kryptonite, that this wouldn’t add up and you wouldn’t feel any more. You were wrong. The pain piled up on top of each other. So right now, the inside of your body is agonizing, your leg is burning and you’re bleeding out. Is this pain going to go on forever? It sure feels like it, because no matter how much you pray for it, you’re still not dead.
No, you’re not dead. You’re just lying there in your own vomit and blood, thinking about how much you want this nightmare to end, one way or another, when you hear gunshots. You close your eyes, thinking they’ve changed their minds and decided to shoot you multiple times to end your pain, but you don’t feel anything.
“Supergirl, I’ve been expecting you.” What? You open your eyes when you hear that. You can’t see her, the boss is in front of you with his body, but you get a glimpse of red and your heart beats faster. “As you can see, I have kryptonite and your daughter. Now, would you-”
“FUCK YOU!” She flies towards him with her closed fist, throwing him to the other side of the room. You can’t see him, but you know there’s no way he can recover fast from that. Kara kneels before you, and rips the chains with her hands, tossing the kryptonite to the other side of the room, like it doesn’t even affect her anymore. And if it does, it’s not as painful as seeing your situation.
You thought that once you were free of kryptonite, the pain would go away. It didn’t. Your body still feels like it is up in flames. Kara touches your face, you whimper. You can’t barely make up her face with your one functioning eye, but you see your pain reflected on her face.
She is still kneeling next to you, when she hears a noise coming from where she threw the guy. She blows her freeze breath, holding him back a little. Kara looks around, like she’s looking for something.
“I’ll be right back, my love. Ok? Momma is here.” She disappears right after, but comes back a few seconds later, hair blowing, and even though you didn’t see a thing, you know she just used her super speed.
“Mommy. I’m dying.” You whisper and Kara holds you up, carrying you in the most protective way she can.
“Shhh. You’re ok. Mommy is here. You’re ok.” Kara looks around again and you see aunt Alex going inside the room with the biggest gun you’ve ever seen. “He’s tied up in the corner.”
“J’onn and I got this. Take her to the DEO and put her under the sun light lamp, I’ll be there in a few.” Alex goes to the other side of the room, but you still can hear her. “Oh, you thought it was funny shooting my niece? I’ll show you funny!”
You don’t hear anything else. Kara is flying with you back to National City, and you look up to her. Hair flying in the wind, tears dropping from her eyes, she can’t take her eyes off you.
“I’m here. I’ve got you. You’re safe, baby.” She gives you the saddest smile you’ve ever seen.
“Mommy, I’m dying.” You repeat very slowly, because you don’t have any strength left to speak, and you know Kara can hear you either way. And you need her to know. She needs to know you’re probably not going to make it.
“No, you’re not. You’re ok. We’re going home, ok? We’re almost there. Mommy is here with you and your mom is waiting for you. You’re ok, baby.” Kara is crying so hard you barely make out what she’s saying.
“I’m sorry for what I said. I love you.”
“I love you, little one. I’m sorry. I love you. I love you. I’m sorry.” She keeps repeating that until you close your eyes. You can finally let go, you said everything. She knows you’re sorry, she knows you love her. So, you stop fighting the inevitable.
You thought you would die. You wished you had died. But you’re still here. You hear voices and you feel hands on your body. Someone’s touching your leg, it hurts like a bitch. Someone is squeezing your hand, it’s reassuring. Someone’s kissing your forehead over and over again, it’s calming.
You keep waking up and blacking out. But you don’t think they know this, because you can’t talk, can’t open your eyes, can’t move your body. All you can do is feel pain.
“Baby, my baby. I know you can do this. You can come back to us, please, please. I love you so much, babygirl. You’re my everything.”
“Mom, why isn’t she up yet? It’s been days! You said she would be awake by now.”
“Jamie, I-I don’t… She will wake up, honey. Just give her time, she needs to rest.”
“No. No, mom. She’s supposed to be up by now! Bring her back! Do something!”
“I’ve done everything I can, Jam. Come on, honey. Let’s go. Come.”
“Alex, there must be something else we can do.”
“Kara, you know how much I want her back too, I just- I’m sorry, it’s out of my hands now.”
“I wish I could switch places with her.”
“I know, Kar. I know. Go home, you’ve been in here for days. Go see Lena. Go be with your wife.”
You keep wishing you were dead. But you don’t die, and you also don’t come back to life. You’re half alive, and that’s not enough for anyone.
“Hey, little one.” You hear softly, and your heart beats fast. For the first time you feel you have enough strength to do something. You need to let her know you’re still alive. “I brought donuts, and your homework again.”
You try to ask for food, because you’re starving, but you can’t talk.
“I’ve been doing your homework for the past two weeks, and I have to say, I don’t know how you do this. It’s so much stuff, and you still find time to work on your inventions, and go to trainings…”
Yep, your life’s not as easy as it seems.
“Oooh, want to have a laugh? Your teacher sent me your physics homework yesterday and I obviously didn’t know anything, so I asked your mom for help and guess what? Apparently, Lena doesn’t know everything. It took her ten minutes to solve a problem. It was freaking hilarious.”
It sounds hilarious. You wish you were there.
“Hey. Was that a little laugh?” Kara asks and you try to smile again so she can see it. “I’ll tell Lena you laughed at her. Wait, no. I can’t do that, she’ll have hope.” She breathes heavily and your heart shrinks. “Shoot, I’m crying on your homework again. Your teacher will start wondering.”
You want to wake up so badly. You don’t know why your body doesn’t obey you. You’ve been in this bed under the sun for two weeks apparently. Is your body ever going to respond?
“Hold me.” You beg, trying to make your voice come out. It feels like you’re stuck in those nightmares where you feel like you’re screaming, but no one around hears anything. “Please.”
“Alex said we can take you home, with the lights and all. I’m scared, because I know that here, you’re being watched by doctors, but-” You feel her hand stroking your face gently. “I want you to be comfortable, and I want to lay in bed with you all day. So, should I? Should I take you home?”
YES. Please. Do it. Please. All you want is to go home.
“Yeah. I know. We shouldn’t move you too much. We don’t know what’s going on inside you, right? Besides-” You feel Kara’s warmth next to you. “I can lay in here with you, even though Alex tells me not to. We don’t have to tell her, right?” You feel Kara’s arms around and your eyes water immediately. “Baby, are you crying? Did I- Did I hurt you?” She moves away. “ALEX! ALEX! SHE’S CRYING. DO SOMETHING.”
There’s a weird taste on your mouth. Metallic and bitter. You need to get out of this bed, you need to go back to your life. And you feel it has to be now, or it will be never.
You open your eyes, slowly. It’s hard, it’s like they were glued together. It’s all blurry and undefined. You just see bright yellow, but it’s the first time you’re seeing some color in a while so you can’t complain about it.
“Baby! Kara, Alex! She’s awake!” You hear Lena’s voice and you see black and white mixed with the yellow. It’s probably her hair and face, but you can’t know for sure. There are no shapes, just colors. “Baby, baby, it’s ok. Mom is here.” Lena kisses your face and you feel hands on your body. There’s a very strong hand holding yours, and you know it’s Kara, because she is holding so hard it hurts. And you feel Alex’s hands touching your pulsing points.
“Hey, little one. Can you say something?” Kara asks and you open your mouth.
“My bones.” You whisper so slowly it’s pretty much inaudible; you’re sure only Kara can hear you, and only because of her super hearing.
“Oh, oh, sorry.” She stops squeezing your hand and kisses it, gently. “I forgot about the loss of powers.”
Wait, what?
“Ok, you two move away, please.” Now you see red, mixed with the yellow. “Hey kiddo, this is aunt Alex. Listen I have to do a few tests with you, ok? If you can hear me perfectly, blink once.” You blink once. “Perfect. You’re doing really well. Now, if you can see me perfectly, blink once.” You don’t blink. “Oh, ok. Is it blurry?” You blink once. “Ok, don’t worry, it will go back to normal with time. Now, I want you to move your left leg, just a little. Can you do that for me?” You do it.
She then makes you move every part of your body, and slowly but surely you do all that she asks. You hear Kara and Lena’s celebrations next to you and you smile proud of yourself.
“Hey kiddo, that was perfect! Next time you wake up, you will feel a lot better. I promise you.” You feel a squeeze in your hand, and you give her a little smile. “I don’t want you to get tired, so you can go back to sleep now, and we’ll work more later ok?”
“Wait.” You whisper and she puts her ear close to your mouth so she can hear you. “Lena.”
“She wants you.”
Lena takes Alex’ spot, holding your hand and putting her ear close to your face so she can hear you better.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, no baby, you don’t have anything to feel sorry for. Everything is alright. Listen.” You feel Lena wiping the tears from your cheeks. “You were right. I’m sorry I made you feel like you’re not the most important thing in the world for me, because you are. You are. Stop-stop worrying about it. Just use everything you have to recover, ok?” You nod weakly. “I love you.”
“We love you.” You hear Kara’s voice and you breathe deep.
“Mommy.” Your voice comes out a little stronger, but it is still just a whisper.
“Mommy is here, little one. I’ve got you. We’ve got you.” Kara says and you close your eyes again. Your body might still ache, but your heart doesn’t ache anymore.

Well, Supergirl, it’s been fun.
When I first heard of the show last year, it was this—maybe a little cheesy, but that’s comics—fun show with a focus on relationships between women of all different types, a show about a woman growing up and coming into her own and finding her place in the world. And, of course, Kara and Alex. The sisterhood at the heart of the show. Of course there were some things that could’ve been done better—but it became clearer and clearer that it was an honest effort.
I hope you know how much of a leap of faith it took to follow Supergirl to the CW, as a queer woman. I hope you know that that’s—in my entirely unprofessional opinion—an indicator of how much good faith this show had. This show literally got the CW’s foot in the door with a demographic that it had all but completely alienated by this time last year.
I think it’s safe to say you’ve used that up.
I believe that representation matters. But it doesn’t begin and end with Sanvers. And this season I have watched:
1. A black man and a beloved DC character sidelined as a love interest with no warning, no real explanation, and no further treatment of it—now, as we know, to pair off Kara with the frat-boy reincarnation of Lar Gand
 2. Kara’s entire arc this season (both Danvers sisters, actually) be reduced to her love interest. Jeremiah who?
 3. The eighty millionth regurgitation of the “love of a good woman” trope. I don’t need to go into why this is inappropriate on so many levels in a supposedly feminist show that’s marketed towards young women and girls (but I will anyways).
 4. Characterization and continuity thrown out the window in order to make Mon-El look good and drive the plot.

 For Jeremiah’s deception to fool everyone but Mon-El, not only do we have to assume that it never occurred to trained government operatives that he could be a plant, we also have to believe that a) no one examined him at the DEO, b) if they did, no one knows the difference between a robotic arm and a human one, and c) we have to forget that Hank/J’onn is a literal mind reader.

 You can only excuse so much before it starts to look like you’re tearing down your title character and your actual core ensemble in order to make a character relevant to the plot.
 5. Kara repeatedly insist that she doesn’t like Mon-El, she doesn’t want to be around him—only to have him harass her until she dates him (or forgives him).
 6. Alex “Come near my family and I will end you” Danvers push her sister repeatedly at a man who Kara has openly expressed dislike for multiple times; who, once they’re dating, disrespects and lies to her repeatedly. She excuses his behavior on more than one occasion. (Are we sure they haven’t all been replaced with White Martians?)
 7. Watch Kara be put in a position (sometimes transparently contrived, as in “Homecoming”) where she either has to apologize to Mon-El because he’s been justified by the narrative, or, for some unknown reason (usually prodding from another character, like Alex or the Music Meister), decides to forgive him. Over and over and over again.
 8. An actual episode, supposedly focused on the Danvers family, where Mon-El has more screen time than the actual lead and drives a plot he isn’t even relevant to.
This show was, nominally, about Kara Danvers. Her as a whole person; trauma, family, grief, rage, jealousy—and her deep desire in spite of what she’d been through to give back to her adoptive home and do the right thing. It was about her professional life, trying to make her way in the world and working for the kind of woman that could help her learn how to do those things. It was about her assumptions being challenged—not narratively bludgeoned—and her learning. But most of all, it was about her becoming her own person. A whole person.
That show is gone. Her single main arc this season as a character is rehabilitating the galaxy’s most unrepentant frat boy by… arguing with him a lot and constantly being pushed to a point where she’s ready to break up with him, apparently. People are so quick to say “But he’s learning!”; “But Kara’s a stick-in-the-mud!”; “She’s prejudiced too!” (I’m pretty sure you call “prejudice” against a shameless misogynist “standards”, but what do I know, I’m gay). They’re missing the point. And that is:
Kara’s story now revolves around Mon-El.
Arguments and evenings with him have entirely replaced “sister nights” at the end of the episodes. His secrets, his disrespect, his actions, are now driving her development as a character. She mostly only reacts to events outside of that, like another threat from Cadmus, or rescuing Lena Luthor, or whatever’s happening with Jeremiah—but her stance towards those events is reactive.
In other words, Kara no longer drives her own story.
And Kara has lost her job at CatCo. That job that, last year, “kept her connected” to the people she was trying to serve? Disappeared with a whimper after a similarly half-assed treatment to the search for Jeremiah. Kara no longer has a professional life.
But okay. I’m gay; clearly I don’t understand what it’s like to be heterosexual, or in a relationship, and I’m obviously only in this for the Supercorp, right? I should just stay in my lane. I have Sanvers! What else could I possibly want?
Funny you should ask.
Flip side of Alex’s story—I’ve lived in queer communities. I’ve watched friends come out. Women who thought they were straight.
And I watched them struggle with the things they’ve been taught about relationships. What they should want and what’s acceptable from a partner. What love looks like, on that micro, interpersonal level. Things that are, in many ways, inextricably intertwined with gender, in our culture.
Mon-El is the closest thing I can think of to an embodiment of all those things that they struggle to unlearn. Mon-El—and stories like this one—are exactly how they learned those things.
Let me remind you, in case you’ve forgotten, that while the queer lady fanbase for shows tends to have a much wider age range, this show is primarily directed at young women and girls.
A show that’s marketed as “female-centric” has in fact become a show about a woman fixing a man—a man who, incidentally, doesn’t want to be fixed. He just wants to keep banging her.
And these girls are going to grow up and become women—straight or not—who will go out into the world thinking that this is normal. That this is acceptable—to be lied to repeatedly, to have your requests for privacy disregarded, your family spoken to rudely and your parents treated with hostility and suspicion, to have your house broken into, be accused of sleeping with someone by a jealous not-boyfriend, to shoulder the entire emotional weight of making the relationship work by forgiving him over and over and over again—
—Because in the end, the story goes, that will make him (them) better.
The reality is, so often, that it doesn’t. That a person will happily continue taking advantage of someone’s good faith if they think they can get away with it. That jealous behavior like Mon-El exhibits often escalates into physical violence. That a dude who seemingly doesn’t care is often exactly what he seems. Someone who doesn’t want to change will not change, no matter how “much” you love them.
That you owe it to that person to stay with them and pour all your effort into a relationship; that sure, you “deserve better” than to be lied to—But you’re still a terrible person if you don’t give them another chance.
Compared with a relationship that only gets five minutes of screen time most episodes, it feels a little bit like I’m expected to be happy with what I’m offered as a member of the queer female demographic and ignore the utterly cringe-worthy toxicity of the Kara/Mon-El relationship, the abrupt and kinda racist way James was removed from the field, the terrible narrative choices, the plot holes so big you could lose Fort Rozz in them, and, oh yeah—that Supergirl is no longer Kara’s story. It’s the story of Mon-El’s rehabilitation.
I can’t celebrate the representation I’ve wanted for fifteen years when it means I have to ignore the destructive messages the rest of this show is pushing.
And, kinda like a car crash, it’s becoming increasingly clear that whoever is driving this story is not letting off the gas. I don’t know why. But I can see it coming, so I’m bailing.
I want to support positive queer representation. I want to support shows about women, and their stories—all of them. It’s what made me willing to take a risk on this show after the move was announced.
But Supergirl is no longer that story. And damn, I wish it were different. But I recognize the signs. And I’m gonna be spending my Monday evenings watching something else. Something I can enjoy without feeling like I’m throwing anyone who’s not me under the bus. Hanging on and waiting for a change that’s never gonna come.

Hello, I lied. I wrote more Supergirl content. It’s Lena and Kara a year after the thing I wrote yesterday. It is...not original, but it just poured out of me. Please enjoy, if you care to.
She misses their anniversary dinner, and it doesn’t even matter why, and she’s furious at herself and at Alex, even though of course it’s not Alex’s fault. She actually flies to the restaurant, but of course Lena isn’t there. Not anymore.
She wants to smash a hole through the building. This isn’t the first time she’s had to let Lena down, but it’s the most important. And, really, the whole night should have been hers. But a hero’s time never really belongs to her. It's something she's been grappling with more and more, and it’s getting harder than she could have predicted, back when she first realized how she felt about Lena Luthor.
She collects herself and heads to Lena’s apartment, letting herself in through the balcony door. “Hello, Supergirl,” Lena greets her, and the frost in her voice goes straight to Kara’s heart.
“Hi,” she sighs, quickly shedding the outfit.
Lena is sitting crosslegged in one of the living room chairs, in black yoga pants and an oversized t-shirt of Kara’s. Her face has been scrubbed of makeup, and her hair is in a simple ponytail, and still Kara’s breath catches when she meets her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she says simply. “I know that’s not good enough, but I am.”
“I know you are, Kara,” Lena replies, thawing slightly, because Kara is so earnest. “Come here.”
Kara goes and sits at her feet, resting her head against Lena’s knee, and Lena smiles and reaches down to smooth her hair. “I really thought I’d be there, sweetheart.”
“I know,” Lena assures her. “It’s all right.”
“It’s not. But thank you. For being understanding.”
“Yes, it is one of my many amazing qualities,” Lena rejoins, and Kara laughs and feels most of the tension leave her body. “Come to bed.”
She lets Lena lead her to bed, and she burrows into Lena’s arms. “Happy anniversary,” she whispers, and there’s still a pang in her heart. It feels false because neither of them is happy, not right now, but the year together—that has been happy. Mostly.
“I love you,” Lena says in reply, and of course she returns it.
They hold each other and think about falling asleep, but neither does. Not really.
She’s late. Again. It’s the third time they’ve tried to celebrate their anniversary, the third time Lena has sat alone in a restaurant for over an hour. She tries to tell herself it doesn’t matter; she should be used to this; this is exactly what she knew dating Supergirl would be like. And Kara always understands and is always apologetic and always does way too much to try to make it up to her. But, frustrated as she is with herself, she cannot deny that the loneliness is real.
This time, though, Kara rushes in before Lena actually gives up and leaves, and she is wearing an absolutely stunning red dress that hugs her every curve. Her hair is a mess, and her glasses are askew, but she is holding a beautiful bouquet of roses, and her eyes are bright. And Lena helplessly falls for her all over again.
She greets the waiter cheerfully and gently kisses her cheek as she hands her the roses. “I love you,” is all she says, knowing apologies don’t help.
And Lena smiles and accepts the roses and the kiss, because it is so clear that Kara is trying so hard. The waiter offers to bring a vase, and Kara thanks him as she takes her seat. “You look beautiful,” Kara tells her, finally fixing her glasses. “As I’m sure you did the other two nights.”
Lena laughs ruefully, and Kara smiles sadly. “Come to the ladies’ room and let me fix your hair,” she orders, and Kara obeys.
She is entirely intent on fixing Kara’s hair, because it is an atrocious mess, so she is completely taken by surprise when Kara grabs her and kisses her as soon as the door closes behind them. As always, Kara leaves her breathless, and as always, she finds herself collapsing into strong arms, wanting to surrender herself entirely. It’s really not fair that Kara has this effect on her.
“It’s a good thing you started this before I fixed your hair,” she whispers, giving in, as Kara grins and kisses her again, pinning her against the wall of the restroom.
They both know about how much they can get away with in public, so the impromptu makeout session ends quickly. And Lena has to fix her own hair as well.
At the table, Kara lets Lena order for her and plays footsie the whole time, which—god help her—Lena only finds charming. She should be annoyed, she should be hurt, but all the loneliness she’d felt seems to have evaporated.
So she lets herself enjoy their dinner.
Kara goes home with her afterward and leads her onto the apartment balcony, where she has apparently strung up a set of café lights and set a table with candles and a box of donuts. Lena smiles and shakes her head, and Kara’s face is alight as she carefully pulls Lena into her arms and begins to dance with her. There is no music, but Kara doesn’t need any, and Lena is happy to follow her lead.
“I am never as happy as I am when I’m with you,” Kara tells her, her words like a vow, and Lena collapses.
Kara picks her up and carries her inside, trying not to show her alarm. She carefully sets Lena on the sofa and sits beside her. “It gets so lonely, waiting for you,” Lena cries, and she sees Kara’s heart shatter, but she can’t keep this to herself anymore.
“Sweetheart, I’m so sorry,” Kara breathes, and Lena hears the sincerity in every syllable and lets it bind up her heart.
“I don’t mean for you to feel guilty or to ask you to choose me over Supergirl. It’s just been hard lately.”
“I know. Is there anything else I can do?”
Lena shakes her head. “You’re doing everything right.”
“Is it…not enough?” Kara asks, and there is fear in her voice. Lena realizes Kara thinks this might be how she loses her, and she practically flings herself into Kara’s arms.
“Oh, Kara. That would be like saying you’re not enough,” Lena says shakily. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize,” Kara says, suddenly fierce. “Always tell me what you’re feeling.”
“Well, right now, I’m feeling very grateful.”
“Grateful?”
“That Supergirl makes me such a priority,” she whispers playfully, and Kara smiles and hugs her close. “You’re not wearing the cape under that, are you?”
Kara laughs and shakes her head. “I threw the cape at Alex, actually,” she say sheepishly. “I insisted on no more Supergirl stuff tonight.”
“Oh. Kara—”
“Don’t worry. Alex won’t listen to me if something really serious comes up.”
Lena sighs and snuggles close and lets herself hope nothing serious will come up.
And Kara holds her and kisses her hair and quickly and quietly turns off her phone. National City will have to keep itself safe for one night.
