Snippet Sunday

It's Sunday, Sunday, Sunday which means it's sneak peek time! (I don't know where that energy is coming from just roll with it)

I'm working on finishing the final act of Stowaway and also editing the rest of act two, which will look like a huge update but in reality there's just a lot of quick POV shifts and it'll be about the same number of words as the last two updates.

Because sometimes a chapter is 8-10k and sometimes 6-11 chapters is 8-10k. *shrugs*

ANYWAY, this sneak peek snippet is one such bite sized chapters, staring Uncle Del!

“La Hidra has been hit, port and central engines lost, I am shifting power and refreshing the shield,” Trix’s calm voice was eerie over the din of battle and Old Earth classical rock galloping through the cockpit.

Delgado was fighting to maintain control over his ship as he careened toward Bradbury IV, “can you help keep us on course? I don’t want to lose the rook!”

“Si, si, Capitán Delgado,” Trix chirped, “you should know that enemy chatter has shifted. They are currently arguing on who will follow us to the Stormherald. They are calling the lieutenant a traitor and a spy.”

“What?” Delgado braced as they broke through the atmosphere, his vision filled with fire as they ripped through the upper layers.

“A scan of their systems show that one Major Palmer has levied the following charges against Lieutenant Benbow: disrespect toward superior commissioned officer, contempt toward officials, espionage, absence without leave, aiding the enemy, resisting arrest, mutiny, and thirty counts of murder.”

“Ay, our rook will fit right in!” Delgado joked as he tried to pull up on the throttle, “Trix please tell me we can avoid fusing with the bedrock.”

“Landing gears are operational and will activate in three…two…”

The ship rocked back hard as the thrusters engaged. The roar of the remaining engines died and the ship rattled terribly around Delgado as they moved toward the ground.

“We aren’t slowing enough!” he shouted.

“I cannot lower planetary gravity, Captain,” Trix said back matter-of-fact.

Delgado sighed through his nose, feeling the sass roll off the dry, robotic words. He grabbed his helmet and pulled it on, managing to get it secured and suit systems activated before La Hidra Dorada slammed belly first into the ground.

THE CREW'S BATTLE CRY.

The Storm Bringer is the name of a pirate ship that Hannah Hook and her crew own.

It served as headquarters for the pirate crew and can be seen throughout the series 'The Marvelous Misadventures of Hannah Hook and Co.'

Description:

The Storm Bringer is an old pirate ship that Hannah Hook won and fixed up for her crew. Repurposing it as a safe house/boat/home for her crew and replacing the sails with three homemade sails that have a matching flag up on the crowsnest, a single red flag, and two additional crimson red flags.

Its walls are covered in artwork that she and her crew made as well as random treasures they have picked up over the years. 

The wood is mainly brown with hints of red in some places and it has many rooms that the crew share (some of these ‘rooms’ are just areas with curtains hanging up to separate them. 

It is one of the few ships on the isle that is almost fully intact and the shape its in has been described as ‘remarkable’ by the few older pirates that have stepped abroad since the ship came into Hannah Hook’s possession.

History:

Hannah Hook acquired the Storm Bringer from it's pervious owner, Blackbeard, in a poker game that she bested him at when she was 6.

In that game, she not only gained a ship but two new enemies (Blackbeard and his son, Barnaby) and the respect of the elder pirates on the isle.

Her first three crew members were Luke Tremaine-Westergaard and Skia Aoratos (her 1st and 2nd mate respectively) and River Le Beak (who decided to just be a crewmate) who helped her build her crew and repair the ship.

They ended up renaming the ship 'The Storm Bringer' and replacing it's old sails with ones they made themselves before tossing the ones in the storage closet.

And over the years, Hannah and her crew ended up redecorating the ship to make it feel more like home. Using art pieces they each made, rewards they'd received, and random treasures they had found to do so.

They even added on to the ship, making more rooms and making it look more intimidating and wild in the process.

VERY LONG POST

Mentions blood, lots of blood, more blood, and all the blood. Also implies violence. No violence is depicted. The second part of a series of connected short stories in my setting called the Layered Earth, which contains various versions of the Earth that exist parallel to one another. Each version is a Layer, and each Layer is different. This story takes place on Layer Beta, a hidden-style urban fantasy setting with fun things like gods, supernatural organizations recovering from the Cold War, magic guns, cult nonsense, etc, etc.

This one features two of the same poor sods out of Station Chicago of the Chatter & Melody Society, who are a bunch of scholars and diplomats trying to keep the peace and understand the supernatural, alongside their boss and their recently-promoted junior.

We’ve been altered as to an event that is possibly related to the previous so-called ‘invasion’ incident in Glade, Kansas by our allies in the Inter-Cultural League.

Delgado: To be completely honest sir, I’m terrified of the implications of another Glade.

Rower: Agreed. Arnold is, uh, almost six times larger than Glade… that’s concerning. And the banner at Glade implied that the Hound was leaving and being replaced by the Fox, who is, well-

de Klerk: Most often the Chatter, or related to the Chatter in some way, who embodies the free, feral, and wild instincts of humanity.

What, I did my homework! And the paperwork for Glade.

Day: No-one’s disputing that. Either way, Arnold seems far less overtly defaced, at least from here. Let’s approach the center of the town, where there should be a hardware store.

(Sounds of footsteps, clinking of metal, dragging of something heavy-ish)

de Klerk, slightly worriedly: Nygh, I smell something. Like… ugh, I can’t quite put a name to it yet, but it’s nasty.

Delgado: I don’t smell anything, which means it’s probably supernatural. Could you compare it to something?

de Klerk: Umm, kinda like when you touch coins and then sniff your hands? Like metal, but worse, like… uh, the first time I met Mr. Emery, he kinda smelled like this, like sweat and hard work, but this is worse. This is like, uhm, like when someone’s overworked and let out their anger by slamming a table with their fist or something.

Rower: Sounds like a mix of Fluctuation and Duty, maybe even Industry…

de Klerk, with dawning realization: W-WAIT! Wait, I don’t think it’s metal. I-I think it’s blood.

Day, matter-of-factly: Well, that lines up with what I’m seeing.

Delgado: What are you see- ohhh, oh no oh no oh no.

(Camera hesitantly clicks several times)

Rower, shakily: F-For the record, there’s a-a lot of blood. Like, way more than there was at Glade. But only blood… so much blood.

de Klerk, very shakily: O-O-Oh goodness, oh goodness. S-Someone’s dead. Someone’s…

Delgado: Way more than one person’s dead, buddy. W-Way more…

Day: Stay back, we don’t know if what, or who, did this, is still around, or if they’re going to do it again. De Klerk. De Klerk.

de Klerk, shakily: Y-Y-Yes, sir?

Day: Feel out if anyone’s nearby, okay? I’ll play defense.

(Slight whirring sounds begin)

(Wind whooshes, birds call, very distant waves are heard)

de Klerk, calmer: No-one’s nearby, for now. Straight ahead, sir, it’s clear seas.

Day: Alright, navigator.

(Sounds of careful footsteps and slight whirring)

Rower: Hey, there’s something drawn over there. Where… there’s less blood.

Delgado: It looks like a fox. The same fox from the banner at Glade. But, uh, painted in blood. And cruder.

Rower, a bit worriedly: And that looks like a deer. A deer with weighing scales.

Day: Well, if it wasn’t obvious already, the Eras are involved with this somehow. First Expanse and Chatter, and now Fluctuation.

de Klerk: I-I think… yes, there should be more on the wall around the corner.

(Sounds of careful footsteps and slight whirring)

Delgado, sarcastically: Great. More Latin. What’s it say, Rower?

Rower: “The red fox who slaughters is followed”, uh, no, “The red fox who slaughters is chased by the deer who weighs meal and sells oil”, wait, “the black deer who weighs meal and sells oil”. Something like that.

Day: More reversal of roles.

de Klerk: Hmmm… there seems to be no-one here. At all.

Day: Concerning. Let’s just sweep the town once, make sure there’s really no-one here, and then leave. Something tells me that this isn’t a good place to be.

Delgado: Damn straight, sir.

— 11:04 MINUTES CUT FOR BREVITY —

Day: Well then, report summary begins. Arnold, Nebraska seems to be completely abandoned. We found no bodies, no parts of bodies, only blood. The painting in blood of the deer chasing the fox, alongside the Latin writing, is the only item of interest we found.

Delgado: All the blood was very fresh, only dried enough not to drip, save the blood used to paint the image. That blood was old enough to look black. All of it has to be either majorly supernatural or whatever killed or drained the people of Arnold got rid of or hid the bodies somehow.

Rower: Additionally, we found no evidence of weapons. No blades, or guns, nor bludgeons. It seems like only fists and teeth and nails were used, almost as if the people went feral…

de Klerk: And as the Chatter’s Fox was the one who chased the Expanse’s Hound, it kinda makes sense that instead of an orderly army like in Glade, disrupted by animals, the people here went feral, before… I dunno, getting burned? I’m not familiar with the Fluctuation beyond the whole ‘Up in Flames’ and ‘Coin Toss’ stuff.

Rower: Fluctuation is chance, fortune, and money, sometimes. They’re also imbalance and justice. But the most important part of them now seems to be their scales. Do you know what other famous fantastical entity is associated with scales, de Klerk?

de Klerk: Lady Justice? Or, uh, the constellation Libra?

Rower: The horseman Famine.

Delgado & Day, in unison: That’s not good.

de Klerk: Wait wait wait, you mean, from the Bible? Like, with War and Death and Pestilence?

Rower: Yep. I didn’t get it until I saw the Latin that said “the black deer who weighs meal and sells oil”. Famine rides a black horse and calls out the price of grain. And guess what? War rides a red horse while carrying a sword, and Conquest a white one while wearing a crown. And Conquest is usually called Pestilence in the modern day.

Delgado: Does that mean that Famine’s next? And then Death?

Day: I guess so. At least if Fluctuation is Famine, then we can at least speculate that it won’t be fire or failing businesses to look out for next. But then which Era would be Death?

de Klerk: If Chatter and Expanse and Fluctuation are out, then maybe… Contradiction? The whole Schrödinger’s Cat thing? Or maybe Speculation, with the Blacker-Than-Black thing?

Delgado: The only ones who I can’t think of as Death are Splendor or Songbird. So… maybe Industry? Or Duty? Or, hell, even Progress.

Day: There’s no use speculating. Report summary ends.

Casa Castor Delgado Perez | Rino Levi

Jardim Paulista, São Paulo | Brazil | 1959

Designed in conjunction with Rino Levi’s architectural partners Roberto Cerqueira César and Luiz Roberto Carvalho Franco, Casa Perez sits within a central São Paulo neighbourhood close to a busy street. The house is set back from the avenue, with a facade that is relatively enclosed and protective in character. There is a constant interplay between inside and outside space through the intelligent use of „secret“ courtyard gardens. From the front one can easily see the most striking element, a „floating“ white box hovering over the garage, which holds accomodations for a maid. The box makes the building more ambiguous and less domestic, while added to the fortress character of this elevation. Stepping inside, however, the house unfolds dramatically thanks to the introduction of two courtyard gardens, which introduce light, greenery and air. They sit to either side of the central living room, which can be protected - as needed - by sliding glass walls. Service spaces are arranged to one side and bedrooms pushed to the rear. Levi himself died six years later; his practice was continued by his two partners.
