Business Plan

My plan is to open a business like no other,

finding a storefront on a long and winding road

far away from foot-traffic and other vendors,

in the deep woods or by a lonely country field,

and keep my light on 24-hours a day and night,

allowing my patrons to walk in naked and afraid

without appointment or money or expectation.

And I would write them a poem about anything

they want, sizing them up like a fortune teller

but without the disingenuous overtones or ball,

staring deep into their literary soul to uncover

their clandestine inhibitions, their fears, all those

cobwebbed intentions long hidden from family,

and neighbors and co-workers in the daily trudge.

Like a bartender pouring out concoctions crafted

of ancient recipes fermented over decades, speak

to their need for find the truth in print, on paper,

scribed by hand in ink and quill, or blood if you

want to pay extra, infusing their categorized lives

with a touch of grace and solemnity in the face of

the digitized monotony that passes for intimacy.

My payment will be a promise to share yourself

with the world, to cast anger to the wind, to strip

fear away from your spine and bury it in the sands

of some beach where you have never been, to tell

a conformist to go fuck themselves, to welcome

humor back into your life, to never again deny it

in the face of pretension, to give your dreams the

same attention to which you have been basting

those spreadsheets and files and forms, those bills,

worries and schedules, and I will be rich indeed.

Blood Orange & Lemon Bars 🍊 🍋 I adapted this recipe from @smittenkitchen to utilise all the citrus I had languishing on my kitchen counter. The addition of the blood orange juice sweetens the recipe, so I brûléed the sugar topping to give it a little more complexity and ever-so-slight bitterness. I do think I prefer the straight lemon that we’re all used to, but for someone like my husband who can’t handle as much sour, these were perfect. I have wondered for awhile if I’ve really been loving people the way God designed us to & so I asked Him if He & I could work on that. I’ve learned it’s not light stuff, really loving people. Sometimes the ROI in relationships is low. Sometimes pride tries to deceive you into thinking the effort makes you pathetic. Sometimes it feels like you’re taking your heart over a dull cheese grater. For me, trying to really love others has become a mirror for me to see all the ways I have strived for self-preservation; keeping people at arm’s length means the risk for pain is low but it also stifles the heart and the fullness of life that comes when you learn to set your focus outward & love selflessly without expectation. It doesn’t mean bombarding people with unwanted attention, staying where you’re not wanted, remaining in harmful relationships or being a doormat, but instead to “not let kindness and truth leave you”. (Proverbs 3:3) I’m seeing now, if you do it right, you’re guaranteed a worthwhile change when you truly love others, if it doesn’t change them, it will change you. It will humble you. It will strengthen you. It will open your eyes to see deeper into God’s heart for us & that, in turn, will help safeguard your own heart. No regrets. The original latin word vincit is derived from vincere, meaning of course to conquer, but also to win, to overcome.
