Anyone else who went to highschool in the mid-late 2010s have to learn about a real life murder trial via a true crime podcast as an english assignment or was that just our school

#i can for sure see the benefits of using content like that to promote critical thought but it was also kind of weird in retrospect #we were like 16 LOL what the hell did we know trying to play detective #especially because one of the things we covered was how the family was against the podcast making the murder into a spectacle #like one of our assignments was to write a hypothetical reply to a real life reddit post that the brother made asking people to stop #like i totally get how it was helping our brains expand. i GET that. but it's weird that it was Real. i see the benefit of that too #but still weird #and honestly it didn't really ask us to engage with the idea of the ethics of it. at all. #we were pretty much just told to write a reply explaining to the brother why we shouldn't stop and why is not exploitative #(again these would never actually be sent anywhere they were just for our teacher) #so like. idk how critically we were really being taught to think ig #but I know that if it was a college level course we would have been expected to sort of debate it a bit more #to at least question if the brother had a point rather than just like. write what we were told. #at least I can be more critical about it in retrospect ig. at the time i was just trying to do the assignment bc i was 16

In reference to this ask, what do you use/how do you keep track of EVERYTHING, as you say there? The best I've managed is to write up an outline, and then expand on that outline in the comments within the code, and use that to help me write everything. I'm curious about what tools you use to help you with this process, or how you make it work?

people are going to really hate this answer, but mostly just our brains (one per person, so two brains total) I also have variables that track pretty much everything of even the mildest potential import the player can say and cluster where those variables are defined at the start of relevant scenes, so I can go back and reference something if need be. And more importantly, by tracking pretty much every fact the player can pick up or every flavored thing they can say, we have the flexibility to go back later and pick from what's needed or relevant. I also tend to make sure the naming conventions for those variables have a nested structure w/ relevant prefixes. One such cluster below:

Leaving comments in code for yourself like you're already doing sounds like it's helping! It can also help to have a writing partner to split some of the labor!

Sorry that I don't have a magic bullet for this. I do think that this is something you get better at the more you practice is, so starting with something that has less complexity at the beginning and slowly ramping it up can be a good way to train your memory for this sort of stuff.

I've already expressed to sibi in an ask before how I admire her writing aftercare and thoroughly making sure the other returns safely and slowly! I've never met a writer who dedicated so much to consent, aftercare and just checking in and taking it in a pace where the sub doesn't feel overwhelmed or at complete loss of control.

I've told you how I cried intensely the second time I pegged my boyfriend and how I'm so lucky that even if we both didn't know what domdrop was he held me and I fully believe that if he didn't go gentle and reassure me that day I would have seriously had a mental breakdown! Because the dark thoughts. In my brain after the sex where insanely going to eat me up.

Doms often get exhausted after scenes and in my case it's the relief of the scene going well but also some guilt and inner voices calling me too cruel and twisted for domming. I think people should study this more. Some subs are very resilient and require little of aftercare compared to very fragile doms. It's not always the fragile small sub and the carer protector dom.

Even though I only pegged him three times in total in our 6 years being together the last time (the one after the severe Dom drop) we just laid silent and when he got back quicker he kept calling me sweet nothings and how I'm so caring and gentle and made him feel sexy and loved and that I did a good job (I'm a Dom that likes being called good?! 3ven good girl. Is that even a Dom possible thing?) I can’t believe we’re at 2023!! What a year it’s been...both good and bad. First and foremost, I want to say thank you to my followers, readers, mutuals, friends, whoever you are - thank you. I couldn’t have made it through this year without you! 

I did this last year and I wanted to do it again with a few added/removed questions, but I feel like we all need a little moment to celebrate our successes and accomplishments, so here’s mine under the cut!

Did you participate in any fandom events this year?

I took part in two! It was my first time participating in the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang this year, and I was partnered with the ever delightful @mysandwichranaway! We came up with a very fun modern!royalty AU that I am very proud of. Sandy did some amazing artwork for it as well, and honestly, this was my first multichapter fic finished (6 chapters!) and was written in about 3 months. Not too bad! → Between Vices and Virtues

Fellowship of the Fics hosted a Hobbit event, An Unexpected Collaboration where I was partnered with @consultingpacha! I had a few plot bunnies stored away and one worked so well with our prompt, and it was nice to get one off the list! Pacha’s artwork continues to blow me away, and I’m very happy with this fic. The positive response has been overwhelming already! → The Night We Met

Both fics have potential sequels! We’ll see how time goes for me this next year.

Do you have any fanfic or general writing goals for the new year?

I’d like to finish projects first and foremost, as well as unleash some new ones. Alongside that though as a writer I’d like to explore new situations/tropes/vocabulary/smut and just expand on what I’m doing already. I’m hoping to put out more words than I did this year, and focus more on my fics rather than events (though I had a lot of fun!)

Next year is the year of Razzy fics - I have so many different plot bunnies I want to tackle! That in itself will help me expand my horizons.

Best story of this year: I am picking this one purely on the fact that in 2 chapters, it’s blowing some stats out of the water, and we’re on the pirate train (thank you, OFMD) I am thoroughly impressed with the feedback and response from this fic already, and I am so excited to continue it! It’s going to be a fun ride! → As The Tide Turns

Personal favorite of 2022: My first collab project, and with my beloved @stardryad-random!! Honestly, this story feels so original even though it has head nods to other forms of media, and it just took on a life of its own. This one will also finish out in 2023!! So be on the lookout for more updates from both myself and Star! → When Darkness Shines Brightest

Most fun to write: I think this one is a tie. I feel like I have the most genuine happy-crackshit-fun when writing two of my modern AUs that have been around for a while, both for completely different reasons. First there’s the band AU, there’s just something about a slice of life journey featuring music and books (which are two of my favorite things) that really touches my heart. Then there’s the real crackshit fic, my WWDITS inspired vampire fic, where I can literally put the stupidest ideas and it just...works, somehow. It still has a plot, I promise!! I feel like the readers have fun with these fics as well! → Bookbinder//Songwriter → Where The Shadows Lie

Most challenging to write: I think every fic is going to be challenging in some way, but the one that springs to mind (which is why it was delayed so much) is Dragonhearted. The latest update was a bit chaotic. Lots of characters, lots of fighting, and it was very important for me to ensure it was clear to the reader as to what was going on. Battle scenes aren’t something I’m overly confident in yet, but this made me figure it out pretty quickly (or slowly, actually).  → Dragonhearted

Fic I’m proudest of writing: Honestly, this is the year of events (yes, even just two) and I am insanely proud of both of them. They may not be “big behemoth fics” by any means, but considering they both have decent word counts and I did them in 1-3 months a piece, I’m pretty grateful and have every reason to be proud! → Between Vices and Virtues → The Night We Met

Story with the single sweetest moment? (Top 3)

Bookbinder//Songwriter (The Acorn Tattoo) - Bilbo has spent the evening with Bofur, Nori and Ori, preparing for Bree Bash with a more “rockified” look, which includes piercings and one tattoo. We have an “acorn” scene, a declaration of not needing to change for the other, and overall, it’s just very sweet.

Between Vices and Virtues (Gold and riches cannot compare to you) - Here we have a cliche train scene, but with a small twist. Thorin doesn’t make it to the station in time to catch Bilbo before he leaves for the Shire after a misunderstanding/falling out. He pulls strings to make the train come back so that he can right some wrongs that never should have happened in the first place.

(Take Me Back To) The Night We Met (Forget-me-nots) - Without spoiling too much as this is a newer fic, we see Thorin and Bilbo talking about a few keepsakes, such as a rune stone, some forget-me-nots, both gifted by the other. Give it a read!

Story with the most angsty moment? (Top 3)

When Darkness Shines Brightest (The Fall of Erebor) - This whole story takes the cake on “angsty” but this particular scene where Bilbo is whisked away into a shadow dream to witness for himself what happened to Erebor truly wins the angsty award.

May Your Forge Burn Bright (Mine Collapse) - Bilbo is caught in a mine collapse, and Thorin desperately tries to unbury his hobbit with doubt in his head and worry in his heart that it may be a body to be recovered.

Kurdu ‘abadaz (My sister’s sons) - Thorin gets to see Fili and Kili for the first time since Ravenhill. He’s smacked with the severity of their injuries, and naturally, blames himself.

Least popular fic: A one shot request that is a gen fic for Thorin, Fili, and Kili. I found it very fun and sweet to write, but it’s definitely showing me that ship fics get way more attention. → I’ll Keep You Safe

Biggest Disappointment: While there are always going to be highs and lows with writing, I am pretty disappointed in the response to my TRSB fic, which is one I am very proud of, and it just didn’t seem like there was the response I was looking for. I understand that the event was VERY Silm heavy, and probably should have altered my expectations, but I had wanted it to do better. Sandy and I both worked very hard on this Modern Royalty Bagginshield fic. I know modern!au can be a bit finicky with the fandom...but give it a chance!! → Between Vices and Virtues

Biggest Surprise: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Collaboration - honestly, this fic was a small nugget of a plot bunny after spotting some artwork some months ago, and I wanted to do a little short story based off of it. It blew up. It was a perfect prompt for Pacha and I’s collab, and it’s not even been out a month, and it’s SOOOO loved by the community??? I’ve never had a story with so many comments asking for a sequel. It’s overwhelming in the most unexpected, yet amazing, way! → The Night We Met

What can we expect in 2023?

Word Count: I almost hit 300k this year, so I want to surpass the 300k mark if possible!

Finishing Fics: I am determined to finish a few of my big fics such as ”Dragonhearted”, “May Your Forge Burn Bright”, and “When Darkness Shines Brightest”!

Coin's UPG: What is Magic?

As the title says, this is my upg, my unverified personal gnosis. I'm posting this because I want to spark discussion on the topic or even just spark your interest. Beginner witches are welcome to read! But idk how beginner-friendly this post is gunna be...

Edit: I suppose this also could fall into "magical theory" but still take this as my own opinion rather than a set in stone thing.

What is Magic?

I feel like what most people refer to as “magic” is like a substance. People talk about space and time as a fabric, and I think magic is comparable to that, though it strikes me more as a viscous liquid. Something a bit more fluid than fabric but still not quite as thin as air. Almost like a gel perhaps? It honestly looks to me (in my brain of course) like the gif I've added above. Now, I don't think people can feel this substance on a physical level, but to some degree, we can feel it on a metaphysical level.

Except I don’t think I’d call this substance magic, I would prefer to call it “substance” (a little on the nose) or something like “aether”, to borrow a term from antiquity. Magic, to me, is like an equation rather than the substance that fuels magical workings.

I think often in metaphors and similies as they help me explain myself. It’s hard to use one here but this is what I came up with:

To think of it like a painting, aether is the medium, the paint. Energy is an ingredient in the paint. Your intention is the plan for the painting. The physical components of your spell (wand, herbs, vessel, etc) are the different types of tools (paint brushes), each one used in a different way but they all falls under the same overall purpose.

Magic is adding it all together. The finished painting is the result of the magic.

All of these moving parts together form “witchcraft”.

So what does magic do and how does it work?

So...“things” (events, scenarios, odds, movement, rest, lots of things are things!) are happening everywhere all of the time and “things” won’t stop happening for a while. Working magic is similar to pushing or nudging these “things” in our favor. This can be done by casting spells, enchanting, divining, and praying or petitioning spirits, entities, and gods for example. Everyone’s definition of what is considered "working magic” is different and I don’t have a concrete list myself, tbh. I just know that, to me, working magic is influencing the world around you on a metaphysical level. For example:

You want to get a new job?

Physically you would go on a job searching website, update your resume, show up to interviews, etc.

Metaphysically you could cast a spell to send job opportunities your way, wear an amulet to make your interviews stick out in the mind of the interviewers, or write a sigil to increase the chances of your resume standing out to name a few.

My upg is bound to change over time but as of right now this is how I find myself explaining "magic". Let me know if you'd like for me to expand on anything in this post.

List of terms for clarification:

Aether: Aether here is used to refer to the "substance" that is magic rather than its Greek meaning or its meaning as a classical element. For now, it's the term I use as a placeholder unless I find something that sticks better for me.

Energy: Similar to the literal definition "a fundamental entity of nature that is transferred between parts of a system in the production of physical change within the system and usually regarded as the capacity for doing work" (MW) but, like, make it magical.

Intention: Essentially the desire, the thing that makes you want to actually work the magic at hand.

Magic: The equation of several factors or the sum total of the moving parts involved in magical workings.

Metaphysical: I use metaphysical as a way of talking about things that are beyond the physical, some people use terms like magical, spiritual, supernatural, immaterial, mystical, incorporeal, and more. To me, metaphysical makes more sense because it’s not the opposite of physical but it’s not quite physical either. Metaphysical pretty much means “beyond/after the physical”.

"Things": In this post, "things" are events, objects, beings, or otherwise the workings of the physical and metaphysical universe.

hey, i saw that anon’s ask and that’s really...inconsiderate? for them to say. you have evey right to be angry and i am for you too.

first off, writing so many works in such a short amount of time is so much work! kinktober and then the hotel california series...i can’t even imagine. plot line and storybuilding and character traits, even if it’s just blurbs or shorter things, those takes a lot of thinking. writing is a creative art and takes out a lot from you. after all, it’s bringing to the world what ideas you have in mind and that’s not easy. things like word count...does having more words really make a story better? no.

i know the anon was disappointed but...they need to have realistic expectations and understand that us writers have our own principles when it comes to writing, such as quality > quantity. or that hey, sometimes things fit long and not. i feel like word count doesn’t count as feedback, because feedback to us is about the quality of writing rather than the length. perhaps something more constructive would be “hey, i think you could’ve expanded on this part of taeyong’s character because it would make the story even more interesting!” or ���the ending was confusing, maybe you could explain it more”.

but the whole thing about how everyone always wants, expects something grand from us writers...like yeah, requests are fine but some people feel entitled to give the asks like you mentioned that you receive and that’s totally not fair. we writers are humans too and saying that kind of thing really shows how...how it feels to be essentially used as an outputter for content even though i know for a fact most of us write for ourselves and have chosen to share it with the world because we want to. it’s so much more draining and easier to burn out otherwise.

sorry that you have to deal with those kinds of asks. you have every right to be angry and everything.

You have no idea how validating it is to read this message, I cannot thank you enough. Everything you said - you’ve literally taken the words out of my mouth. There is 100% a proper way to give constructive criticism, but I know so many do not know how to do that. Saying shit like “oh, it wasn’t long enough” isn’t helping, nor does it give a direction to take things in. Exactly like you’ve said!!

I’ve been so grateful to myself lately because of how much I've been able to write. I seriously haven’t had this much time, motivation, or inspiration to write like this in such a long time. I’m still proud of what I've done, and I really appreciate you saying these things. To have such a thing be acknowledged and even praised is so validating, you have no idea. But, like you’ve said, writing this much can really be very mentally draining, too! There have even been some nights where I have to force my eyes open and mentally jog my brain to stay awake to finish a chapter cause I want to get it out that night. It’s both physically and mentally exhausting.

Literally though!!! I can’t count the amount of times where I've been writing a fic and I'll get to the end of a scene and go, “this seemed like it would be longer in my head” but it is what it is, I have to accept that and move on. Yes, a lot of my fics (especially my full length ones) have gotten longer lately, because I've also grown as a writer. However, there are also going to be times where they’re not going to be very long, and I deserve to write those short ones just as much as the longer fics! I deserve mental breaks through writing, and I also deserve to not have people have these unrealistic expectations, as you’ve mentioned, that every fic of mine is going to be something like 20k words. I reiterate, these are technically also drabbles! Drabbles are meant to be short!! Like??????

Don’t get me wrong, when I want them, I do really enjoy receiving certain types of requests, like for drabbles of these kinktober prompts. But just like I have a right to deny a request, I have a right to make a request as long or as short as I want. I’m just glad you reached out to tell me this and it feels so validating to know you feel the same.

How messed up would it be if Belos met Scion?

pretty messed up! i mean, maybe scion could be a part of the golden guard? not only does it fit, he’d be the brawn and belos would be the brains, so it would be more unlikely that people would rebel in favor of having scion as their ruler. it’d be a very effective terror strategy too since people wouldn’t understand anything about scion except that he’s capable of destruction on a wide scale and is totally loyal to the emperor. i imagine that the mix of violence but also (supposedly) helping people might be what scion needs to not go insane.

if belos realized his power was slipping he might pull a jack slash. by defeating scion or hiding a group of people from him, belos could make himself into the hero and possibly expand into other dimensions which have been devastated by scion. i don’t think he would go for head-on fighting unless he was sure it could actually work, but it’s hard to know since we’re talking about two different systems of magic/science here. (maybe it’s a clockblocker vs siberian situation and scion just gets popped?) however, scion would probably be at a bit of a disadvantage, at least compared to his strength in the wormverse, since a lot of his powers wouldn’t work against people without shards and i think that before anything could happen belos might send scion after people with specific instructions on how to fend him off to see what would work.

in any case, it would be insanely bad for our lovely main characters. with scion’s interdimensional travel abilities, belos could target luz’s mom to distract one of his greatest enemies by killing one human woman. if he did it subtly enough then luz likely wouldn’t realize who was behind it and wouldn’t be able to focus her grief on stopping him. hell, belos could probably kill off all the people who were threats to him and no one would be able to stop him besides papa titan pulling a deus ex machine. still, given how eidolon couldn’t defeat scion through fighting despite his power and immense experience, i really doubt that someone like powered-up luz could really do much with the amount of time they’d have before it wore off unless the interaction of boiling isles magic and worm shards was really bad for scion.

2022 End of Year Revue REVIEW

So, I used the wrong word last year, but hey just another sign that I've lived and learned and grown since then, lol. But no really, I can't help but really proud of myself and what I've managed to write and publish this last year, despite having a pretty rough time this year, especially these last few months. Every like, comment, and kudos and every kind word from someone in the servers I'm in has helped bolster me through to the end of this year and I cannot thank you all enough. Since I published my first fic in like seven years last year, I've published a total of 16 works! That's wild to me!

Just this year, I published 48,061 words but my word count tracker says that I've written 65,773 in total. So, many more things in the works (26 wips in total, I have to say)! I hit over 1,000 kudos on my works this year and I'm almost at 10,000 hits! Those numbers might seem small to anyone else but I'm really proud of what I've been able to do!

So, under the cut, a quick look at all the fics and chapters I published this year! And again, thank you everyone for reading, for commenting, for brainstorming ideas, and generally yelling about our fandom! Here's to next year!

Basically an ask here on Tumblr got me thinking about Boba's relationship with his armor and this emerged from that. Because I have a LOT of thoughts about Boba and his armor.

Relief in Sharp Lines: Chapter Two

Teen. Words: 5,409. Boba/Din.

This was written for the From BobaDin With Love event for the Commitment, Marriage day but that just worked out so well because it was a chapter I'd already been wanting to write. There's a third chapter that will finish this fic up sometime in the future!

On Honeyed Wings

General. Words: 11,856. Boba/Din.

The first chapter was published for BobaDin With Love event and it was originally just going to be that single chapter. But then the AU Bingo cards went out and it gave me another idea and so the next two chapters/the Summer section was written. And I have large chunks of the Autumn and Winter sections written, we just gotta wait and see when I'll get them done!

This Is Just To Say

General. Words: 3,923. Boba/Din.

A follow-up to last year's Father Day fic, I Want Us To Eat Well. I pretty much had wanted to write this one since I wrote the original. It was hard to recapture the lightning in the bottle that was Eat Well but I just wanted to write this fic so bad and let Din reciprocate.

And with this fic I continued the tradition I somehow started with Of Good Use of being the "Public Acts of Fucking" writer. I apologize, I don't know how this fic happened (I do it was the BobaDin server's fault) but fuck, if I didn't have fun writing it.

Not my first foray with Cobb, but first with writing explicit DinCobb, which I was nervous about for so long for some reason? Written for the DinCobb server's Fic Challenge/Exchange Event. It was a new experience writing from someone else's suggestion but I like how it turned out, I just hope the recipient and other readers did as well!

Meandros

Explicit. Words: 7,109. Boba/Din/Cobb.

Someone in the BobaDinCobb server said "Boba gets his thighs bitten by the other two" one day and well, my brain latched onto that SO fucking hard. And this was born. As well, oddly enough, a bit of an exploration of gender for myself. You know, as one does.

Consumer Guide / No.129 / Andy Hill discusses his latest electronic music project The Subtheory, and more, with Mark Watkins.

MW: Andy, introduce me to the band…

AH: Mark, we are a four piece and I'll start with Cate Debu, our singer. Then we have George Lambourne on Bass and Pat Scott on Lead guitar. Lastly and possibly least, is me on Synths and production.

I formed the band back in 2019 and it was just me and it was pretty much a total instrumental project (not sure anyone really wants to hear me sing to be fair).

Cate started writing with me around 2021 and officially joined late that year. We gigged like crazy for the latter part of that year and pretty much the whole of 2022 and George and Pat joined us to flesh out the sound at some point during 2022.

MW: Why the name? 

AH: The name came from the idea that we represent something underground, less mainstream; hence the Sub. Sub bass, Subterranean, Submarine, it's very evocative word to me. 

The Theory was my wife's suggestion and expanded that feeling of this being part of something bigger but in it's own lane (so to speak). 

The sound has really evolved from almost synth wave to a more downtempo/triphop influence but all the while keeping it's roots in bass.  It's all about the bass as someone once sung.

MW: Subtheory are Oxford based…what do you like best, like least, about the City?

AH: There is a real sense of community amongst the bands in Oxford, everyone is super supportive and usually up for collaborating. Most of the time there's little ego too (won't name names about the anomalies though).

The worst part of the City is the complete shutdown of venues. It used to boast so many but one by one they shut down, we lost so many legendary venues over the last few years, Covid didn't help but it was a lot to do with the university, greedy landlords and noise complaints which really keeps the local music scene down.

MW: Past and/or Present. In order of merit, who are your fave Top 3 male singers, Top 3 female singers?

AH: This is such a tough question but I'll give it a go. 

MALE

Mark Lanegan's voice is so unique and distinctive, it adds character to any song.  It's how to distill feeling and emotion into every drop of melody - a life well lived (and sadly missed).

FEMALE 

1 Beth Gibbons 2 Billie Holiday 3 PP Arnold

For me, Beth Gibbons is so emotional in her vocals that she could be singing from the telephone directory and I'd still be listening so she's number one. 

MW: Tell me about the last book and CD you bought, and film you saw…

AH: The last book I bought was a paperback copy of my friend Dom Nolan's novel; Vine Street. I got a hardback copy on launch but it's too cumbersome to re-read often so wanted it in paperback.  It's a brilliant read so definitely check it out.

I bought a bunch of cheap pre owned CDs the other day which included Morcheeba's debut, John Lennon's Imagine and Arcade Fire's The Suburbs albums.

The last film I saw was, don't judge, Top Gun Maverick on Netflix which was high octane, leave your brain at the door type of fun.  I did see Dune 2 at the cinema a few weeks ago which was fantastic.

MW: Who is the best penalty taker in the band? 

AH: I'm going to have no shame in saying straight away it's George.  He's the only one who plays football regularly and though he's a goalie by trade, he can take a penalty. Probably Cate second I'd say if the filming of the video to our song; Camus and Sartre, is anything to go by.

MW: Who is last to leave a party?

AH: I'm not sure about this but it's not me anymore. I was always the one hard partying but these days I prefer to be in bed before 12 which is so rock and roll I know.

MW: Who keeps pets?

AH: I'm not sure if anyone has any pets currently. I still miss my German Shepherd.

MW: How did you get into hiking and what is the tallest you have climbed?

AH: I've always loved walking and love to take long walks heading no where so hiking was just a more advanced version of that. I've done Snowdon several times (in the same weekend) but the biggest was definitely Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It was an experience like no other I've had before. 5 days up to the summit, not being able to breath properly and suffering from AMS, standing at the top for about 15 mins before trekking down again in 2 days was such hard work but ultimately one of the greatest things I've ever done.

MW: What items are usually in your backpack? 

AH: Judging by the last time, loads and loads of battery packs so I could listen to music. Oh and Vaseline for the feet, my top tip is to smother your feet every morning in Vaseline and you won't get a blister.  Also every combination of Haribo's available!

MW: Tell me about your radio show and your usual playlist material...

AH: My radio show is called Electropod and goes out fortnightly on Windrush Radio (plug plug plug) and I tend to play mostly downtempo, trip hop, future garage, ambient and classic synth based tracks. Boards of Canada, Caribou, Bonobo, Flying Lotus and Massive Attack usually feature heavily.

MW: What are Subtheory’s Summer plans?

AH: We are currently finishing off our debut album; Shark Tank, so focusing on that although there are a few warm up shows we've got planned to keep our hand in.  Once that's released in August we'll be booking more shows to support it so hit us up if you want us to come and play!!

hi dia, how are you? i hope you're doing well. sorry to bothering you but i need to talk with somebody that might understands me. you see i really love writing, but everytime i try to write something, even if i already have it all planned, i can't. i can't because i'm afraid that it's not going to be good, or that i can't write a good conversations between my characters or that i'm not going to be able to make my readers feel emotions, and i know that i shouldn't be doing this, but i admit that i compare myself with other authors, and i tell myself that if i'm going to write something or not, it's not going to make a difference and that someone out there is way better than me...i don't know what to do, so i wanted to ask you: what should i do?

Hello, love! I'm doing well, or dare I say, better? For the past few days, things have been quite crazy for me and I've been lacking sleep so much I've been barely coherent. Hence the reason why I've been silent and took my time responding to this.

You will never be a bother to me and you're right, I do understand your predicament. Writer's block happens to most of us. Heck, I've been dealing with my own for the past month and I've been struggling with it too. So I can totally see what you mean. Oftentimes, we find the biggest challenge in ourselves when it comes to creating content, and I rather think that it's somewhat normal to feel that way. And you can't really help comparing yourself when you're surrounded by a lot of people who create the same stuff that you do. That's probably why a lot of writing advice that we've seen on #/writelbr always tells us to "not compare yourself with others" lol. But I know that it's hard not to do it bc they're literally around us, popping on our dash, sometimes they even show us their works when we're talking to them on chats, DMs, etc. That's why I tried to switch things up when that happens to me, maybe you can do that too?

When you find yourself comparing your own work or whatever stage you are currently in creative-wise to another writer, try to take notes about what it is that you find feeding your insecurities or making you feel inferior. Use that note as your guide and a learning tool to improve yourself with your own writing and skills.

After writing for so long, I've learned that each writer has their own "voice" or "tone" that they put into their works. Try finding your own, and figure out which part in the writing process you feel like you can stand out more (for ex. you might not be good at writing dialogues, but you're better at writing a narration with vivid descriptions) and then just continue honing at it until it becomes something that you can be proud of.

If you feel like getting stuck, I actually found this post earlier about the simplest ways to get yourself unstuck. Tricking your mind into thinking that you're not actually writing a fic/story can work sometimes to switch up your mood. It could be through changing your font, using different writing apps, writing them down in your notebook (this is what I do often when I'm stuck), etc. I also have a thing called the "bracket technique" (FYI I just found out that this trick has a name after years of using it lol). This is where instead of writing an actual--fully written--scene, you just put your idea inside a bracket before later expanding it into an elaborate narration or dialogue. It basically looks like this:

[This is the paragraph you've already written so far] [Enter what you want to happen next here and what kind of things they would be talking about, where they are and what kind of situation you want them to be in. So it's not an actual written scene but mainly just a random blurb or brain dump that might make no sense to anyone who sees it except for you]

Another thing that I'd like to suggest to maybe find your motivation again is to actually step back from writing or anything that may stress you out. Forcing yourself to write when you're not up to it will only make you detest it even more. Close your writing app/doc, take a break, take a good walk or drive, maybe find something to read or watch or play a game to get your mind off of it. Then once you're ready, go back to reread everything that you've written so far, and you may find yourself wanting to either fix what you've created or finish it entirely. Either way, you'll find yourself writing again even if it's only to rewrite that one paragraph that you got stuck on the last time you're here.

And please don't say that you're not going to make a difference whether or not you're writing. Trust me, it does make a difference. Whether you only have 5 readers enjoying your work and waiting for an update or 1k readers following you, you're still making a difference in their lives by creating something that they can enjoy in their downtime. And it's not just them. You'll be making a hell of a difference by finishing that WIP of yours and sharing it on your blog/platform and checking at least one of your to-do-list that has been put on hold.

Take small steps and take things slow. Just remember that you don't always have to be the best writer out there, but just focus on being the best version of yourself that you can be proud of.

A three-year-old child is about 3 ft tall and that's a boy and that's half your adult height so people are not calling their son 3 years old cuz he's a little under half his full height. But really it's more like a 5-year-old's height ultimately you're trying to find age of the giant relative to the size of his head but Dave's head wasn't much bigger but he was only about 9 ft 8 or 9 ft 6 total and his head was proportional to that of an 8-ft person it's a big head and a sunset is bigger than normal for his height which is almost 6 ft. But his is for that of probably 7 ft person but his growth is stunted so get stunted to a 7 ft person but that's less than half as normal heights so he ends up being what you would call a three-year-old because of the growth rate but from science from the 7 ft to 15 ft the head does not grow that much more about 1 in in diameter so really his head doesn't get too much bigger it's about it it's about 2 in diameter he says and it's probably true but it would look only like an inch so if you calculated by head size he is more of an adult because at 7 ft really it's going to head person of his race the weather at 8 foot they're reaching young adult just like a regular person when 10 years old they're about 75% of their heights and their head is a little larger and they look gocky, and this is a teeny bit bigger so yeah he's 11 or 12 years old as a giant but his brain is big it's a little bit bigger than his head is big and people say it too it's crammed in there and it's really that of a 13 year old giant but if you scanned it which we have x-rayed he would have a normal brain function at this age because the brain has not yet expanded and it's not squished down and it has growing to do and we don't want him learning stupid s*** over and over and when he's growing. The what you guys call tubes or other and they're not just the exterior will not really appear to expand it will grow more of them and they're not to be too much bigger right now is working it fairly optimal performance for his size in other words person of any race here and a lot of people say that he's fairly sharp and we know he is. And Jen and her head is big and Katia. And she's going to court today and that is in Mexico and it might be how they end up there cuz boy they lame and the money then our son has is not under the shield and only a few places in Mexico City is one of them they can't seem to get it over there I have to do it all at once they said it was a huge City there's only a few other places la and they really need these deposits of money and for ships so they're going to try that they said I'm going to publish now

Hullo, it's me again, I'm alive! Sorry this chapter took so long, been busy. One of the buildings where I work caught on fire a few days ago, so now half of its gone. No one was hurt, though, and I don't have to clean it now! Yay! Anyways, this chapter is really short, and ngl its mostly talking. I tried to make it do the emphasis thing, but I don't think it worked, so if anyone knows how to make it work, tell me your secrets. Chapter 2

Mr. Annoying Stupid Idiot

It took them about five minutes to get to the lake from where they were. After they got there, they decided to split up, Keefe and Fitz went left, while Tam and Dex went right.

          The first few minutes were silent while they kept an eye out for Rachel Elizabeth Dare, but eventually, Keefe broke the silence.

          “Hey look, a goose!” he pointed out, “those things are terrifying. Did I tell you about the time I got chased by one?”

          Fitz looked at it him, “you got chased by one of them? Why?”

          Keefe shrugged, “I think my charming good looks and fabulous hair angered it. I was just walking by one and it went after me! I think it chased me, like, the entire length of Foxfire before I jumped into a tree to escape it.”

          “Did that work?” Fitz asked.

          “Oh, no. Turns out the little terrors can fly,” Keefe said.

          Fitz laughed, “so, you got your ass kicked by a bird, that’s what your saying?”

          “What?” Keefe scoffed, “no, no. I totally won that fight. Seriously, stay away from them though, I think that one’s eying you with its eyes.”

          “What else would it be eyeing me with? It’s beak?” Fitz asked, still laughing.

          “You know what I meant!” Keefe said, laughing along with him.

          The two kept laughing until they couldn’t breathe. Fitz tried to catch his breath, but he couldn’t. He had stopped laughing at this point. He couldn’t breathe, and by the looks of it, neither could Keefe. Fitz looked around, and finally spotted what he assumed was the source of the problem. Two people in Neverseen cloaks stood a few feet away, one with his hands outstretched, like he was about to grab something with them.

          It was Trix.

          “So, you’ve finally noticed us!” One spoke, in a teasing voice, “nice to see you again, boys. It’s been a while. Taking a trip to the Forbidden Cities? Chasing some geese?”

          Fitz couldn’t breathe. Thankfully, everyone had been trained to hold their breath, but this was different. It was like any, and all air was getting sucked from his lungs, and from around him. From the fact that Trix was here, he guessed that was pretty accurate to what was happening.

          He pushed Keefe behind him, making sure there was a buffer between him and the Neverseen.

          “Oh, relax, little Vacker,” the same one said, “we aren’t here for you or Keefe. Although now that we know you’re here, we might have to expand the parameters of our mission. Actually, you might be able to help us with our little mission! You see, we’re looking for your brother. And Ruy, but that’s more of a side quest at the moment.”

          Fitz concentrated on Keefe’s thoughts, which was a little hard considering his lack of air making his brain feel fuzzy.

          “We don’t have any information on Alvar.” He lied, catching his breath, “but if you have any, I’d love to hear it.”

          “Oh, no. It doesn’t work that way! You give me information, then I take the both of you to Gisela, and you die, and Keefe does… whatever it is Gisela wants him to do, and we find our two defectors! Speaking of our two defectors, I don’t quite believe the fact that you don’t know anything about your dear old brother. I don’t really like wasting time, so you might as well tell me!”

          “He’s not my brother,” Fitz said before he could stop himself, finally catching his breath enough to find Dex’s mind.

          We’ve run into two Neverseen members. Trix and someone else. Could use a bit of help. Fitz thought.

          On our way.Came the reply.

          “Oh?” said the Neverseen member. “Well, that’s an interesting development.”

          “Who are you?” Keefe asked.

          “Oh me?” the man asked, “no one important, just some random guy, no need to worry about me! Although, I suppose you might want to call me something. I’m not very picky, so go ahead! Give me a name.”

          “How about Stupid?” Keefe suggested.

          “Nah,” Fitz said, “he looks more like an Idiot to me. Perhaps Stupid Idiot is a fair compromise?”

          Keefe nodded, “ah yes, I do agree, Fitz. So, Mr. Stupid Idiot, why are you looking for Alvar? I’m pretty sure he’s dead.”

          “Oh, well.” Mr. Stupid Idiot said, “I was hoping for something a bit more mysterious. Trix, I don’t suppose you have any suggestions?”

          “Nope. I think Stupid Idiot suits you just fine. Or maybe, Annoying Stupid Idiot, on the account that you don’t shut up.” Trix replied.

          “None of you are any help,” Mr. Annoying Stupid Idiot said, right before Dex came out of the shadows and sucker punched him in the stomach, Tam right behind him.

          “Run!” Tam yelled, kicking Trix in the knee, “we need to get Keefe away from them!”

          “Couldn’t agree more, Tam!” Fitz yelled, grabbing Keefe, and running.

          Dex and Tam quickly caught up with them, but unfortunately, Trix was still awake, and that meant he could take their air away.

          And once again, Fitz couldn’t breathe. This time though, Fitz remembered his Pathfinder, and pulled it out, raising it to the sky. Now that the four of them were together, they could escape.

          He did, however, forget the fact that Mr. Annoying Stupid Idiot was a Conjurer, and as soon as he pulled it out, it was gone.

          “Ooooh, fun! I wonder where this goes!” Mr. Annoying Stupid Idiot was getting more annoying by the second.

          Fitz saw Dex reaching for something and decided to make sure Mr. Annoying Stupid Idiot was focused on someone other than him. He pulled out a throwing star, aiming for Trix. It quickly disappeared from his hand.

          Then a flash of light came from where Dex was, a Melder in his hand, pointed at Trix. He went down immediately, thrashing on the ground, and they could breathe again.

          “Oh, dear,” Mr. Annoying Stupid Idiot said, turning toward Dex, “that won’t do.”

          Dex shot the Melder again, just as Mr. Annoying Stupid Idiot snapped his fingers. This time, he missed. The Melder appeared in Mr. Annoying Stupid Idiot’s hand, and he walked over to Trix, conjuring a different Pathfinder. He leaned over him, then turned looking straight at Dex.

          “Well, that’s interesting,” he said, raising the pathfinder, “Until we meet again! Oh, by the way, I thought of a name! Call me Mania.”

          As the two disappeared into light, the four boys looked at each other.

          “Well,” Keefe said, “I vote for continuing to call him Mr. Annoying Stupid Idiot.”

          “Are you guys okay?” Tam asked, looking at Keefe and Fitz.

          “Other than not being able to breathe for a bit, yeah, I’m okay.” Keefe replied, “are you okay?”

          “Yeah, we’re okay,” Tam said, nudging Dex a bit, “right?”

          Dex nodded, staring at the spot where Trix was a few seconds ago. He turned back to them and looked at Fitz. “I don’t suppose anyone gave you an extra Pathfinder?”

          Fitz shook his head, “they took our Imparter too. Don’t suppose we have an extra one of those?” The other three shook their heads, and Fitz sighed. “Probably should’ve thought of that before leaving. Good job grabbing a Melder though, Dex. That came in handy.”

          Dex nodded, once again staring at the spot Trix was last.

          “Anyone else hungry?” Keefe asked.

          Fitz stared at him.

          “What? We just encountered a stressful situation, and now I’m hungry. Is that a bad thing?”

          “Rachel Elizabeth Dare is known to visit a café near here,” Dex chimed in, “they serve food there.”

          Tam rolled his eyes, “okay, let’s go get His Majesty of Terrible Hair Land some food so we don’t have to hear about it.”

          “Oi!” Keefe said, “I have great hair!”

          Dex smiled, and started walking, gesturing for the others to follow.

          It turned out by “near here”, Dex meant “about a thirty-minute walk away from here”, and that walk was spent listening to Tam and Keefe argue about hair again, so it felt even longer. But eventually, they reached a quant little café tucked in between two stores. There were chairs and tables outside, surrounded by flowers of all kinds, some bird feeders, and fountains. A few cats sat on the chairs, basking in the sun. The sign out front read, “Hestia’s Café”.

          The four walked in and were immediately met with the smells of human food, and Fitz had to admit, it didn’t smell bad. He spotted muffins, croissants, cupcakes, and many other pastries. The smells of food mixed with even more flowers inside, on tables and windowsills, hanging from the walls, they were everywhere.

          There was a counter a few feet in front of the door, where two people could be seen helping customers, and to the left, a few booths. To the right, some tables matching the ones outside. There was a window with a wooden bar and chairs so that one could eat while looking outside. To the right and behind the counter was a fireplace surrounded by comfortable looking armchairs, a shelf of books beside the fireplace. There looked to be a door leading to a bathroom to the left of it.

          A few people were in the café, sitting at booths or tables. Dex and Keefe went to get food and drinks, since Keefe was the hungry one and Dex had the money, while Tam and Fitz went and sat down at a table. The chairs were surprisingly comfortable. The two sat and talked for a bit, mainly about how long they should stay there, and how they could contact Mr. Forkle or Sophie.

          Dex and Keefe sat at the table after a few minutes, Dex carrying the drinks and Keefe carrying plates of food. They ended up trying everything, and Keefe and Fitz ended up switching drinks, while Dex and Tam kept stealing whichever drink the other had.

          Fitz ended up drinking a frozen hot chocolate, which tasted a bit like Cinnacreme, but colder, and not as sweet.

          And so, they stayed, mission momentarily forgotten, talking about random things. Until the door opened, the bell on the door ringing, and Rachel Elizabeth Dare walked in, accompanied by two boys.
