hi i’m back, i’ve just finished my degree and do not have enough of a brain to write an in-depth of anything. but! here’s some of what i’ve been shoving in my earholes for the past month, in no particular order.

The Magnus Protocol — (season 1 ongoing) continues to blow my fucking mind. the sound design/music combo for this series is of particular note, it really just… mwah. elevates the text so much for me. i also continue to be impressed by how well this works as both a standalone series and as a delicious trail of candy for those of us who loved Archives. we’re halfway through s1 now and all i can think about is alice dyer.

Beef and Dairy Network — (ongoing @ 109 eps) a partially improvised absurdist comedy pod set in a world that is bizarrely obsessed with beef. my qpp listened to one episode and called it “distilled british humor” which feels… correct. i’ll be real, i’m actually mad at myself for not getting into this one sooner, but on the other hand having a long binge of it has been divine. i would kill to go to one of their live shows.

The White Vault — (5 seasons, 10 eps apiece) not including goshawk because i’ve barely started on that. but the main series… woah! god, i totally didn’t think this was going to be my thing but i could not put it down? the first season is definitely slower than i usually prefer but the characters kept me hooked and by season 3 the narrative completely took over my brain. i also love how well they sold the found audio format, it WORKS. gold fucking star, highly recommend.

Jackie the Ripper — (3 seasons, 5 eps apiece) put this one aside for a rainy day and binged it all at once. deeply wish there was more of it. it’s a raunchy crime drama with a downtrodden detective at the helm who i SWORE i wouldn’t root for but ended up doing so anyway. do recommend! if it sweetens the pot, the protag has the same VA as watson in the currently popular Sherlock & Co.

The Mistholme Museum — (6 seasons, soon to be complete) people have been recommending this to me for years and i just never got around to it, but on the bright side — it was an incredible binge. anthologies aren’t my strong suit but i found the framing device really strong and, crucially, it develops a meta plot that balances really well. biggest strength for me was the narrator, but i can’t explain why without spoiling some key plot developments. just trust me.

Wake of Corrosion — (4 seasons, final ongoing) very cool apocalyptic suspense/horror. i initially loved this show for the dynamic between the two leads, who are brothers trying to reconnect on a solitary camping trip when the world decides to go wonky. i ended up loving the worldbuilding as well. final episode drops very soon.

Neon Inkwell: The Pit Below Paradise — (miniseries, ongoing) this one has a bit of a western vibe and heavy religious/culty overtones, which isn’t my favorite genre. but i think each of the main characters has been developed really well thus far. + many fun cameos from members of the production team, those are really fun to try and spot :)

Twits: A Steampunk Distraction — (2 seasons, 5 eps apiece) very silly comedy of errors from the pov of a bumbling aristocrat. can’t say too much without giving the end of s1 twist away. i highly recommend it if you’re looking for some lighthearted listening. the ending credits are also very cute.

Planet Arcana — (ongoing @ 71 eps) i’m so bad at TTRPGs but this one has such a unique setting, i’m just captivated. tarot-flavored sci-fi adventure for anyone interested. i’ve made it through the first arc and the party has already experienced a crazy amount of development; stoked to see what happens next.

Selene — (ongoing) anthology about a spooky little town with a vintage vibe. single narrator, quite talented. i’m not always easily invested in anthologies but the narrator here really sells it for me, and (!) i think he writes children — both their thought processes and dialogue — very realistically. which is my grandest compliment.

Camp Here & There — (s1 complete @ 33 eps, hiatus?) i put off listening to this for a rainy day because i’d heard nothing but rave reviews and they weren’t lying. this is quite literally the ONLY pod i’ve come across that completely captures the same magic that WTNV did for me on first listen. the creator is kinda going thru it so idk if s2 is going to happen but i really hope so. even if not, s1 is very worth listening to. it’s wacky and sinister and i just love the narrator, it’s hard not to.

We’re Alive: Scout’s Honor — (8 ep miniseries, complete) imagine WA from the perspective of some awkward tweenagers. what’s not to love? the gore is really heightened by each characters’ stage of emotional development. i especially loved the conclusion but i won’t spoil it here ;)

Among the Stars and Bones — (2nd season ongoing) sci-fi drama with a solid first season, really nice narrative tie-up, but the second season was SUCH a glow-up nonetheless! + the most memorable karim kronfli performance of all time IMHO.

loves staying up late with you and doing random stuff. talking about random stuff, binging a show/movie, or simply just cuddling with you in silence he enjoys it so much. i firmly believe he prioritizes his quality time with you.

his hugs are the best!!! he's so warm and he doesn't squeeze too tight or too loose, it's just right!! if he doesn't see you for like a few hours though he squeezes the shit out of you

surprisingly a good cook. you constantly wake up to breakfast in bed, your favorite lunch meal, and a 5-star dinner. he has some corny ass apron that says: “mr. good lookin' is cookin” and you can't help but giggle every time you see it, and he's so confused.

WILL give you his jacket if you're cold. it does not matter if he feels like he'll freeze to death too, he will give you his jacket.

has you set as his phone wallpaper. one week it's a pretty candid photo of you, and another week it's a silly off guard photo he has of you. whenever you think you look bad or not, kaiser thinks you look absolutely gorgeous in all of the photos he has of you.

shares a spotify account with you to see what you listen to and what time! if he ever sees you online at ungodly hours of the night he sends you a ‘go to bed already!!!’ text. he's totally not awake either

swings your hands when you two are walking and holding hands. (24/7 basically) he will only start to swing them a little more if you try to stop him.

he unconsciously smiles whenever he sees you smile. he doesn't even realize it until you or someone else points it out, and only drives him more insane because of the effect you have on him.

gets matching necklaces for the two of you with each other's initials. he wears it 24/7, only taking it off before showering. he loves when someone points it out, and starts rambling about how amazing you are.

remembers all of the important dates. your birthday, anniversaries, you name it. he would rather die than forget an important date.

speaking of birthdays, he is always the first one to send you a birthday text the second the clock hits midnight. he pre-types his long paragraph talking about how grateful he is for you and such a week in advance and adds to it on the days leading up to your birthday.

his feet are always cold and it is the worst in the winter because he wakes up and decides to be annoying and puts his cold ass feet on yours. he then looks at you with a smile as if he hasn't done anything wrong ever.

loves going shopping with you!! he loves the way your eyes light up and lips curl up into a small smile when you see something cute. he loves the mini fashion shows you give him when you try on stuff. he will hold all your bags and pay for everything. he is hopelessly in love with you.

pridefully hands you his hoodies to wear because he wants to see you wear it. he giggles in his head when someone points it out because he's happy people notice you wearing his hoodie.

has the iphone sci-fi ringtone as his alarm. he set it one day as a joke and now he doesn't have the heart to change it. despite waking up to it dozens of times, you physically cannot get used to it. he claims he can't change it because of a emotional connection to it now, but you feel other wise. just to annoy you

soo good at flirting it's actually annoying. he's a natural smooth talker and knows exactly what makes you flustered.

OMG Shuji was over the moon when you said that you love him. Movie nights! He loves cuddling with you (I think he's kinda touchstarved yk) Probably the most fav cuddling position is him being the big spoon, he feels like he's protecting you. But sometimes when he's too tired, he buries his face into your neck and wrap his arms around your waist. Night walks and deep talks whenever one of you need to get something off your chest. He LOVES when you play with his hair or scratch his scalp while cuddling. Ass and thighs guy, but he prefers your face and eys. Neck kisses are his favourite, if I don't count your lips. Maya thinks you are the prettiest girl in the world (Shuji thinks it too) and she often come to you with Anna and asks for help with girl stuff. Very protective bf!!

Pretty chill bf but whenever someone insults you or hurts you in any other way, he snaps and will beat the person up. Shows you off and Heather is jealous that Alex found someone prettier than her so she will kinda bully you but she quickly notice that you don't take any of her mean comments. He loves kissing you on the lips, but kiss on the nose will also do it. Cuddles whenever he has a chance. Ass guy definitely. He loves watching horror movies with you. He is a small spoon most of the time because he loves when you hold him and he can easily grab and squeeze you ass cuz he's lower (yk what i mean). He loves watching you (admiring you) and it doesn't matter what are you doing, he just find you beautiful at every moment.

they get on each other's nerves so much. half the time you’re breaking up fights and mediating arguments. but no matter how stupid one thinks the other is - there’s still a lot of love involved. it just doesn’t come across as such when miguel throws an empanada at johnathon, or when johnny portals miguel into the sewers ❤️

what they do agree on is how much they love you. these superpowered freaks adore you and they’ll do anything and everything to keep you safe.

they’re both geniuses, so science is something big for them to bond over. the two bounce ideas off of each other and provide really good insight. both of them practically live in your home’s lab, so they spend a lot of time there together tinkering (and bickering.) if you’re a sciency person, ofc you’re joining them. if not, you’re just happy to listen to them ramble. you love your smart-ass boys!

miguel and johnathon are also huuuge nerds when it comes to cheesy sci-fi movies. they adore playing video games with you and doing weekly movie marathons.

★ they both use their powers to hog the popcorn hehe ★ miguel falls asleep quickly, because he feels safe with you two, and it’s the cutest thing. ★ but once johnathon woke him up from “awww”-ing too loud :( 

both miguel and johnathon hog the bed. it’s easiest for you to sleep between them, like a tight fucked-up sandwich. for the most part it’s great and insanely comfortable, but the two cling to you like you’ll fly away.

at first meeting miguel johnathon is skeptical, because miguel is the ceo of alchemax in his dimension. once miguel explains he went through similar troubles with the company in the past, and that he’s working on fixing it, johnathon feels a bit better. miguel offers him a research position but johnathon declines, more content with the idea of supporting you and miguel from home.

★ miggy things !

miguel teaches you and johnathon basic self defense because he’s so scared of his enemies targeting you two. he really appreciates daily check-ins and confirmations if you’re apart.

you and jonathan dote over miguel. you both know he’s been through a lot, so you’re always there to provide comfort and care when necessary. he has so much on his shoulders and you both try your best to take on some of it on for him. a lot of times, miguel will prefer to be alone for a bit, but once he’s collected his thoughts, he’ll come back to you and johnathon for cuddles.

another thing in spite of their disagreements is being silly together. yes, miguel can be quite serious but at heart he’s just as charming and witty as any other spider-person. he’ll say the funniest shit out of nowhere and it has you and jonathon cackling.

he considers himself a retired villain now. crime is no longer a necessity now that you and miguel have mended his broken heart. he has a shoplifting habit, though. it’s just so easy with his powers! miguel has threatened to turn him in numerous times.

if miguel needs it, he’ll help him out in the field, but overall johnathon prefers helping from the lab. same goes for you if you’re a vigilante as well.

he has a lot of trauma from the past, especially in regards to the accident. you and miguel always lift him up in your own unique ways. you tend to be more comforting while miguel opts for providing practical advice. johnathon really appreciates having you two as close company on tough days.

jonathon feels so damn lucky to have you and miguel. he’s always saying shit like “wowee i really hit the jackpot!” you love it and miguel thinks it’s stupid (-ly cute.)

johnny’s so smug about being the tallest (unless you happen to be over 7 feet tall - will you marry me-) miguel is still fairly tall, and webs things if necessary - so whenever johnathon reaches something for him he gets all pouty.

once he called miguel “papi.” miguel couldn’t take it seriously and fucking died. johnny’s still haunted by it.

★ rdr things !

you have the unique ability to make these two incredibly stubborn men melt in mere seconds. they both don’t respond well to authority, but they always listen to you. They trust your judgment and know you want the best for them.

they love teaming up to dote on you. on a bad day, they’ll prepare your favorite foods and do whatever you like, whether that be cuddling silently, talking about it, or something else. it breaks both of their hearts to see you upset.

the two are always hyping you up, no matter what you do. if you’re a student? hell yeah, write those fucking papers! are you a vigilante like miguel? you’re so brave and kind-hearted! do you stay at home? thank you for keeping everything in check and being there! but what matters most to them at the end of the day, is that you’re you, and happy and safe with them.

sometimes they just talk about how much they love you.

jessica drew is your bestie and you wouldn’t have it any other way. johnathon and peter b parker are two dorky dads grilling together. don’t even get me started on miguel and lego spider-man.

miguel still scares the shit out of poor miles, but they’re both warming up to each other, slowly but surely.

johnathon and miles get along great. he’s become a scientific mentor figure for the boy, and it’s the sweetest thing. he and miles talk about physics all the time (because miguel is once again, scary) and johnathon helps him out with school stuff. miles will join the two in the lab sometimes, so you always set aside his favorite snacks for him :) 

gwen hobie and pavitr like to visit too, and they’ll join you guys for meals.

johnathon is so great with the kids. despite him being an ex-villain they absolutely adore him. he makes jokes and stupid references to embarrass them.

you, miguel and johnathon often babysit mayday so peter b and mj can have a date night.

Hobi: I feel like he would play it up a bit, showing up decked out in gloves and a mask(or a diy haz-mat suit), just to make you laugh.

Namjoon: ngl, he tries to be calm and reassuring, but he's freaking out a little bit inside. Tries looking up different remedies to help you get better faster with increasing absurdity.

Jimin: Plays it up like Hobi. Gets you a little bell so he can act as your butler for the week. Might start to regret it when you start to use it for silly stuff.

Taehyung: Panics like Joon, but for very different reasons. If you're sick, then who's gonna take care of him?! He is BABY! Clings to you for the whole week, as if that will heal you. Probably ends up catching your cold, sorry.

Jungkook: Uses it as an excuse to camp out at your place for the week. Refuses to let you do anything for yourself.

Yo!! Hello!!! I am like 90% sure I've seen you post about dimension 20 before!!

I just got a dropout subscription and I'm thriving but I am looking for advice for where to start/go with the dnd-verse on it? I'm assuming that the separate campaigns are relatively stand-alone but I would love an opinion (or just input on what the actual chronology is lmao)

hehe sleeper phrase discovered i'm honored you came to me :)

so the first thing to know which you probably already do is that there is a main returning cast for some seasons, and then some campaigns are a different group with an occasional different dm. the Intrepid Heroes are Lou Wilson, Zac Oyama, Brian Murphy, Ally Beardsley, Siobhan Thompson, and Emily Axford with Brennan Lee Mulligan dming, so they play as that exact group multiple times. There's usually one or two of them in a non-main-cast campaign, too, including Brennan sometimes as a player when somebody else is dming.

So! In terms of watch order! I recommend starting with Fantasy High because it's the original campaign and also fantastic. There are currently two seasons, Fantasy High and Fantasy High: Sophomore Year, and they are both masterpieces. We're also getting Junior Year this winter which is extremely exciting for me personally because I Love Fantasy High lol. Fantasy High is a great starting point especially if you're new to dnd/dnd actual play shows (which you may not be so feel free to disregard this bit of advice lol) because multiple players are learning how to play in the first season, so there's plenty of opportunity to learn with them. It's also generally pretty light-hearted and funny, though it doesn't sacrifice story for comedy which I love. If you don't know, the concept of Fantasy High is that these young teenagers live in a world where everywhere else is a stereotypical fantasy world but their country is like. Classic high school Americana. It's silly, the characters are great, the storylines are great and only get better in Sophomore Year, it's an all around great time and great intro to D20!

I went right from Fantasy High to Unsleeping City, which is also fantastic (you'll notice a recurring theme here, I love every campaign I've watched so far lol). If you like the lighter parts of Fantasy High but want a little bit more tension, Unsleeping City is perfect. It's set in modern-day New York with a twist: there's a magical underside to the city. Lots of fantastic commentary on modern life in the storytelling that slaps, I won't spoil but it slaps, and also really wonderful characters! Unsleeping City also has two seasons, so you get to see the characters grow and change a lot over two full plotlines which is very fun!

If you like the more serious side of things, my personal favorite D20 campaign is A Crown of Candy. I watched this third and it made me cry hard enough at work that my boss asked if I was okay lol. The set-up is simple: fantasy world made of food, but make it Game of Thrones. It's intense, the stakes are high from episode one, it's incredibly character driven and everybody plays really, really interesting characters, and because of how high-stakes it is, every payoff is just insane. We all talk about Ally's poetic nat 20s and believe me, they exist, but Mr. Lou Wilson (love of my life) has a nat 20 near the end of A Crown of Candy that genuinely made me feel so crazy when it happened that I had to take a walk lol. Cannot recommend it enough, it's devastating and perfect.

A Starstruck Odyssey is really good again if you like the lighter end of thing but still want stakes and tension! The world is based of comics that Brenna's mom wrote which is really sweet, and it's a very different vibe because is sci-fi instead of pure fantasy, which is honestly really fun. Some of the characters are up there on my favorites list, shoutout to Skipper and Sundry Sydney!

In terms of the campaigns that aren't Intrepid Heroes, the first one I listened to was Misfits and Magic, which is a Harry Potter spoof dmed by Abria Ayangar, who's fantastic, and featuring Brennan as an utterly unhinged in the best way player. There's also Mice and Murder, which is a super great mystery with anthropomorphic animals that was shot on zoom over the first lockdown (a few seasons were so don't be shocked by that lol). I'm a bit more than halfway through A Court of Fey and Flowers which has been great so far, and I'm super looking forward to getting to The Ravening War, which is a prequel to A Crown of Candy, and Mentoplis, as well as the current season, Burrow's End. I have to watch Neverafter first though, which is the most recent Intrepid Heroes campaign.

Anyway! To summarize!

My advice is to start with Fantasy High and Fantasy High: Sophomore Year, and then pick which elements you liked best to decide what you want next! All of the campaigns that aren't explicitly linked are completely standalone, like I'm not missing anything important from the one's I've watched by not having watched some of the others, so don't worry too much about chronology or anything like that! The only ones that need to be watched in a specific order are the two with two seasons already, which are Fantasy High and Unsleeping City, but those are labelled quite clearly with season titles! Also if it's easier to keep track of, Dropout has the campaigns sorted into their own shows on the site so you don't have to choose seasons of D20, you can just choose A Crown of Candy.

I need to say this, cuz smth embarassing happened to me and now I can't stop imagining Chula in that scenario and literally any turtle.

Because yesterday, I was talking to one of my friends and on one word, I started stuttering SO much. Istg it was SO bad😭

I went "Haha, crazy that you said that cud-cu- don't- I-dont...do-don't.. huh???? Cuz you- don't.. what the fuck were we talking about??"

And now I can't stop this moment in my head and I need to get it out somehow. However, knowing my mind (hopefully) it won't stop anyways but yea, i've been imagining Chula as the poor girly-pop who needs to listen to Leo stutter as if he don't know how to fucking talk. Or she'll laugh, who knows?

She gon go "Oh don't worry bout my kid. He's okay. Or...mildly on drugs... morphine...maybe. Wouldn't know how THAT happened tho. Or he knows how to un-learn the whole shabbing alphabet. Could be it."

Don't mind me. Just a lil' guy that wants to feed myself and others some serotonin with these little shenigans.

So, your ask got me think of what Leo could be rambling about to cause him to stumble over his words. Which made me think about when I stutter like I don't know English and how it happens most often when I'm overly excited about shows and movies and my brain moves quicker than my mouth.

And THAT made me think about the fact Chula basically lives in the Rise Lair now so, of course, the boys will be showing her all the Lou Jitsu and Jupiter Jim movies. And THAT made me wonder what Chula's relationship with sci-fi would be like.

Because she's LIVED THOSE THINGS, more or less. The 'fiction' in sci-fi is basically all the stuff she had as everyday items and events. But, since the tmnt shows are kind of silly, the silly shows within the shows are pretty ridiculous so Chula is basically watching a horrible interpretation of a rough idea that was a fully developed thing in her dimension.

In short, Chula Verd doesn't like sci-fi because seeing all the completely incorrect interpretations of how space travel and exploration and space wars work is just painful but she knows the boys like it so she just smiles and tells them that it was a great movie.

And then I wrote a dabble about Leo stuttering while they watch a movie! Enjoy!

“Oh, oh, oh! This part is awesome! This is when Jupiter Jim crash lands on the alien turtle planet and he’s gotta fight his way to the super secret base-”

Chula nodded along as Leo explained the scene playing out of the kid's holoprojector.

Since she was staying long term, they had all taken turns catching her up on ‘every modern culture medium she needed to know about’. And at the very top of that list were their favorite holo-drama franchises.

One of which was a series about this space explorer slash adventurer called Jupiter Jim. An absurdly massive franchise that, in Chula’s opinion, was following the worst interplanetary explorer she’d ever seen. It was a wonder he hadn’t started a galaxy-wide diplomatic incident and all the conflicts were usually contained to the planet he visited per film.

But the boys liked Jupiter Jim and she had nothing but time to kill, so she tried to pay attention when they dragged her to the beanbag chairs for a movie night, either as a group or one at a time. And in both circumstances, she would smile and nod and sit through the horrible inaccurate depiction of how space travel works and what the protocols were for making first contact and getting far more enjoyment from listening to Leo break down every scene and how it was made instead of actually watching the film.

Leo gestured to the screen, hands flapping almost too quickly to track as he chattered away, “Oh, the production details of this are really cool! Did you know this was made a decade ago and the effects still hold up better than a lot of the CGI they use now? Yeah, yeah, it’s ‘cause they were tryin’ new stuff, lots of stuff, the director was really trying to push JJ onto the big dogs franchise map with this! They had a whole studio that- that they made the sets in and- and- and the costumes were reva- rev- re- re-, bah, bah, bah- Revolutionary! They handmade every single cell- sale- sail- Fuck!”

Chula blinked when Leo cut himself off, crossing his arms and blowing an angry little raspberry. She waited a few moments for him to keep going, mild disappointment rising when he just made unhappy little grumbles under his breath. 

She glanced back at the holo-drama, fighting the urge to wrinkle her nose at it. She would never, ever tell the boys but…she had found out after the first Jupiter Jim film that she didn’t enjoy ‘science fiction’. Mostly because of the fact that most of the hypothetical ‘fiction’ was very close to things that were pretty standard on most of the planets she’d been to in two realities. But the movies got so many things so ridiculously wrong it was almost painful for her to watch. The only part she enjoyed about the sci-fi movies was how into them the boys would get, flapping their hands and ranting about their favorite part. 

So Leo not talking anymore was quickly sapping her enjoyment of the one-on-one, impromptu movie night. She leaned over to Leo, lightly bumping their shoulders and asking, “What did they handmake?”

“Huh?” Leo blinked, face smoothing out from the pinched, grumpy expression as he looked up at Chula. 

She tipped her head towards the film, where ‘Jim’ was not doing his job as a ‘simple space explorer’ very well, considering he started shooting the moment an alien poked their head into view, “You were saying that this was the holordrama that made the franchise take off, right? And that they handmade somethin’ that helped it do that?”

“Right, right, uhhh, the alien suits,” Leo, much more calmly this time, pointed to where a turtle alien was running across the screen. “The, um, costume department made every scale on the turtle suits by hand. It helped make them look super realistic.”

Chula nodded, waiting for Leo to keep ranting about the film.

Except he seemed to deflate, tucking his knees up and propping his head on them to stare at the screen.

It made Chula a bit sad, seeing all the excitement just poof away. She loved it when Leo got excited about stuff, waved his hands around, and talked a mile a minute. It was weird when he got too quiet, reminded her of the first few weeks of them traveling together when he was scared and lost and didn’t fully trust her yet.

She carefully poked at his side and jerked her chin towards the holo, “What was the secret behind the little sidekick’s tail? I imagine doing all those stunts was hard to pull off without looking fake.”

Leo’s head perked up a bit, eyes flicking up to see the small, red and white furred alien that followed JJ around, “Red Fox? Oh yeah, she’s a yokai! Me and my bro’s met her once, she helped us save Raphie and JJ from getting melted in acid.”

A part of Chula knew that that statement should have set off more alarm bells for her.

But something she’d learned with these crazy kids was that their lives were nuts and it was better to roll with the punches and weird, wildly out of context statments as they came.

So, instead of freaking out, demanding details, running to Raph to ask if he’d gotten any acid on his person during that event, she nodded and turned back to the holoprojector, “What led up to that little misadventure?”

And, like magic, Leo was rambling away again, sitting up to recount the epic tale of when he and his brothers had gone head to head to claim the coveted place as Jupiter Jim’s fake sidekick.

Chula listened, only interrupting to ask questions if Leo stumbled over his words again in his excitement and basking in the warm atmosphere of the room.

She didn’t like sci-fi, but she loved listening to the boys talk about it so she could put up with a couple hundred terrible movies.

Daughter of the Deep Review

Alright, it's been a little while since I finished this book but I'm finally writing the review.

4/5 stars!

This book is by Rick Riordan, and while he's not a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- so this book doesn't technically fit my "by mormons about mormons" criteria -- I wanted to include this book because it's one of the only pieces of mainstream media that has casual mormon rep that I've ever heard of.

Summary - Ana Dakaar's freshman finals trip gets turned into a life-death situation when Harding-Pencroft (the school she and her friends attend) is destroyed. The freshmen are the only ones left standing and they discover that there is more to their school than they originally thought -- Captain Nemo from 1000 Leagues Under the sea (also known as Prince Dakaar) was a real person, and their school was built to honor his memory and continue researching the incredibly advanced naval and marine technology that he had invented. Ana has to trust her friends Esther, Nelinha, and Gemini (as well as herself) while they try to win a war they never realized they were a part of.

Gemini Twain is the only Mormon character and he is great. Spoilers under the cut.

Well written - 5 Stars.

Listen, it's Rick Riordan. He's good at writing, what am I gonna say?

2. Fun Level - 5 Stars.

The story is just jam packed with fun and entertaining moments and ideas. The advanced technology is intriguing and silly at the same time, the characters are engaging and their relationships are fun! I had a great time jumping from suspenseful action moments, to heartfelt friendships, to tender introspection, and back to silly sci-fi. It's just a blast.

3. Complex Faith - 4 Stars.

Gemini's faith isn't explored very much, because he's not a POV character. That being said, he is one of the main characters that Ana interacts with, and we get hints that his relationship to his religion is complex. His parents are hippies, and he never knew them because he was raised by his grandmother. She is the one who introduced him and his brother to the church. His brother is on a mission, and Gemini is the only Mormon at HP. He's a really lonely kid. We don't get the sense that he's close with a faith community in the area. Although we don't know Gemini's personal relationship with God, his backstory makes him a unique enough Mormon character (basically, not a Peter Priesthood) that I think he warrants a high score in this regard.

4. Homophobia Scale - 4 Stars.

There is absolutely no romance in this book. I know people like the ship Ana and Gem and there is certainly room for that (and the difference in religion would be interesting to explore) but there is also room for all the characters to be ace, or literally whatever. So, while there are no gay characters, there are also no straight characters. Everyone is just ... trying not to die actually.

5. Mormon Weird - 1 star.

Because Gemini isn't a POV character, we don't get a lot of Mormon specific things. There is a moment where Gemini unthinkingly talks to a Nelinha (who is from Brazil) about his brother who is on a mission in Brazil, as if Nelinha would somehow know his brother even though Brazil is a huge place, which seems like a specifically Mormon Moment to me (in an affectionately, "Oh yikes, we do that don't we" way), but yeah. Not a lot of Mormon Weird included in this book.

6. Diversity of Characters - 5 stars!

Ana - Indian American, Hindu, multilingual (English, Irish, ASL, Bundeli, etc)

Nelinha - Brazilian, bilingual (English, Portuguese)

Esther - European American, Autistic (and written very well from my opinion), has an Emotional Support Dog

Gemini Twain - African-American, Mormon,

Plus lots of other characters who show up throughout the novel, all with their own backstories, ethnicities, and personalities. I love them all.

7. Other Problematic Stuff - 5 stars

Nothing to report. It was just great.

Conclusion - Please read this book!! It's just so much fun, the cast is so great, the world is fascinating, and the plot is engaging. I love Gemini Twain with all of my heart and I want everyone else to know and love him too. It's also just so refreshing to read a book that acknowledges our existence, and allows a Mormon to be one of the heroes in a sci-fi story, just like ... casually. I love him.

I said in my goodreads review that:  "I didn't necessarily see myself in Gem, but I saw all the boys I grew up with in Sunday School, the guys I served my mission with, and the men I met at BYU." He's a good one.

A family HC: Tbh I haven’t gave this much thought but I think he’d be on mostly ‘alright’ terms with his family. He’s probably got some real shitty family members like most Pdudes do but I don’t see him having it really any worse or too better than the rest! He’s probably got a good handful of family members he’s alright with and speaks with fairly often but there’s some he doesn’t see the point in talking to too much.

For some reason I picture him being the type of guy to love family barbecues tho! It doesn’t have to be a lot of people there though, maybe just his uncle Dave (if he has one) and a couple other relatives like siblings or cousins. I just can tell Java is the type who likes to grill lol

A romantic HC- I imagine him to be kinda forward with his flirting. Like he won’t be like P3 and make just a bunch of silly ‘jokes’ tho of course he makes some every now and then. He will just straight up ask whoever if they wanna take him back to their place or tells them he’ll give them a good time if they get him root beer 🤦‍♀️

When he’s seriously with someone though I see him being a pretty good partner! He’s a good listener & he can read situations pretty well. I think with a partner he would be able to quickly tell when something is off & he’s pretty good at trying to come at them with a energy that will help them relax. (My proof of this is how he handled that guy with like P1 levels of paranoia in the game)

A soft HC- I’m not sure if this is ‘soft’ but I want to share a hc that’s kinda different from the romantic one so I wanna say he’s so unashamed of being a nerd! He will get plushies, legos, bedsheets, posters, figures, you name it of any show or whatever he likes.

He would feel really good in a relationship where he finds out his partner has literally no negative feelings about his hobbies :,D

I think he loves to share what he likes too and if someone asks him about one of his interests it makes his day :)

A halloween hc- He used to cosplay his favorite characters on halloween :D I don’t think he’d do it much as a adult but I think he so has some pictures around somewhere of him dressed up as his faves thru out the years. Some horror characters, anime characters, sci-fi/comic book characters, and maybe even some cartoon characters! Some of the pictures makes him a little embarrassed though because some look kinda ‘cringe’ with how bad of the quality the costumes and wigs were tho 💀

listened to the first volume of the trigun stampede ost and oh my god i love music so much,, my silly little composer brain just going INSANE like i love how they use instruments in the show - especially the piano!! the way the minute you hear a piano you're like 'oh shit its knives' and how in ep 3 there's the non diegetic-diegetic shift where we think the piano is just a part of the ost but NOPE he's in jeneora rock and he's playing and he's gonna fuck shit up and the first time we hear a piano isn't even when we first see knives!! it's when they show a plant for the first time, which is!!! the music is telling us something that hasn't (i dont think?) been revealed yet in the show (other than that knives and the gung-ho guns are collecting plants) aghhhh and the way the ost shifts from bluegrass-western to orchestral sci-fi and everything in between is INCREDIBLE, it's like the huge gap between instruments is creating a divide between earth's technology and the plants + project seeds vs the current inhabitants of no man's land

okay so like. here's the thing. i love doctor who. i know that it's always been flawed. that's what makes it charming. i don't care about the bad cgi, i don't care about the cheesy dialogue, i don't care when the solution to the alien invasion planning to invert the known universe involves three grapes and a sock. it's sci fi from the 60s. it's always been silly.

things that i DO care about:

the companions being Actual People with strong opinions: rose's constant defense of the service worker and attempts to get them to unionize, donna's impenetrable stubbornness, rory's unfailing common sense. i want them to fuck up too. i want them to not listen to the doctor. obedient companions are so boring.

egregious racism. i get it, it's mainstream tv, there's gonna be some. but man sometimes i can't even pay attention to the plot in these chibnall episodes. rtd wasn't great either but mickey and martha felt like Real Actual People. no i didn't care for the pair the spares bit nor did i care for the family of blood/human nature two parter but good lord at least martha behaved like an actual black woman

"look at me i'm so Special and Good" performativity. doctor who has always been a bit ahead of its time with characters like jack and the very casual references to queer partnerships and nonbinary characters and trans characters. for the doctor's first run as a woman to be filled with so many wink wink nudge nudge back pat type lines about how the show is sooo good at feminism was massively eye-roll-y. also how come ryan only has dyspraxia when we need to feel sorry for him

and last but not least: i care about the master. like a lot. like an unhealthy amount. and their characterization doesn't have to be perfect, but i think that they have to embody the following: 1) they are at least a little bit camp, 2) they are obviously in love with the doctor, 3) they are kind of supervillain cartoon evil, where they never do anything TOO fucked up, but their grand scale plans always involve taking over the world or making everyone think that they're god or something (their most cruel plans are reserved exclusively for the doctor) and 4) they are kind of just a petulant child. at the end of the day, they just so so so badly want the doctor's attention.

so thus far chibnall has massively failed my first three things, and as far as the master goes, he has horrendously obliterated point three but surprisingly hasn't totally wrecked anything else. all this to say: i think i hate his seasons.

First up is @ethicstownpod! They've got a radio! A podcast that is meant to be full of horrors, ethical quandries, and silly little characters that I already want to squeeze like a stress ball, I cannot WAIT for the release of this podcast!

Next we've got Super Suits! A look at the legal side of living in a world with superheros. I'm already in love with Harper Hallo and am excited to see them come to life in this show!

Up next: Re: Dracula! Dracula Daily in podcast from with an absolutely stellar cast! The Dracula Renaissance is upon us and we are so fortunate to be living in this moment

Its time for The Sound Museum! Self described as "audio fiction about fictional audio" this sci-fi pod follows museum workers in, well, a sound museum and is going to be absolutely incredible I just know it

Next we've got Karen 1%! Sci-fi audio drama following Karen who's coworkers keep turning up dead but I'm sure it's fine don't worry about it. This show exists in the space between AI, creativity, and needing to work to survive. I can't wait to give this show a listen!

Lastly (but certainly not leastly) we have Ankorr 643 from 4Rats Productions! Another sci-fi pod that I can't wait to sink my teeth into, Ankorr 643 follows an aspiring scientist who *may* have bitten off more than he could chew which changes his world. I'm incredibly excited to hear it!

Ah, sorry nonnie, I didn't mean to let this sit so long but it happened to come in right when Farscape was taken off Amazon Prime, so bit of a sore subject. ^_^' These days, I've been watching it on Dailymotion, because my library system doesn't have it on DVD and it's a bit pricey to get the old Starburst edition season DVDs that actually have subtitles and extras.

As for what Farscape is about, my #farscape tag is chock-full of other fans' excellent explanations, including some of mine, so I'll let the show describe itself:

It's even cooler listening to it, for reasons I think you have to hear - with the context of some traumatic later events - to understand. It's like Disney on acid! (1.12 Rhapsody in Blue - this one's a little out of context but it fits so well, and is often used as a caption for Farscape content)

Farscape is, in pretty much every way, the best of what sci-fi does well. It asks a lot of questions and provides no easy answers. In fact, I think it's fair to say that nothing about Farscape is easy. And it has the best character development and relationships I think I've ever come across in TV, even outside the genre. It's trippy and silly and generally weird, but that's all essential to its charm. I have stumbled across very, VERY few stories that come this close to perfectly told.

Audio drama Sunday: 1/15/23

Narcissa

I’ve been meaning to listen to QCODE’s Narcissa for most of the last year and just never got around to it. But over the holiday break I binged all of it in a couple days, I was captivated by the sexy sci-fi thriller. Written by Alex O Eaton in collaboration with erotic audio book company Dipsea, Narcissa is about not-so-distant dystopic future where mind readers are yet again being persecuted with militant persistence. It starts out a murder mystery but quickly becomes a queer android love story with some fun twists and turns that made for such a fun listen. I thought the sound design was really well done for the mind reading sequences, the music wasn’t too distracting/cheesy and the interiority for the two main characters (Sid and Andie) where well written. And I can’t not admit that it was in fact effective at crafting some steamy moments, something that I was wondering if it’d pull off. As explained in some of the ad-breaks I think it’s really cool that there’s an emphasis on creating a safe and inclusive space to hear sexy stories and I’m interested to see if Dipsea makes other ad supported podcasts like this one.

Birds of Empire

Birds of Empire is one of those shows that I think a lot more people should be reeeeeally into. It’s a high fantasy adventure podcast with a deep universe of lore, different clans of animal-humanoid societies each with their own complex political inner workings and characters that represent a break in their respective tribes’ status quo. Listening through it reminded me a whole lot of Warriors (the cats) combined with the political intrigue of a Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon. Written and created by Jason Lew, this lovingly crafted universe is told through four stories from the four animal societies (hour long eps) interwoven with shorter episodes (10 min) that give the listener a glimpse of each tribes’ mythology. I loved the mix up in format and how each episode was a mostly self contained experience, instead of following the same characters throughout. The sound design (Randy Torres) is impressive and helps make the complex worldbuilding come to life. The first episode was a little bit hard for me to get through but I’m so happy that I stuck with it, really hope it gets continued for a second season.

Two Flatearthers Kidnap a Stone Mason

In the new year I finally got a chance to listen to TFKASM (long title) and I wish I had started listening sooner. This show is so fucking funny; a tight, clever and super deadpan satire of every internet conspiracy you’ve ever heard. Almost every punchline is a reference to some sort of meme crafted for a chronically online audience, from the titular flat earther YouTubers that are perfect caricatures of bumbling clout chasers to throwaway gags about McDonald’s ice cream machines. The patter between the characters never gets old and the little parodies of viral videos, mobile game apps, movie trailers and podcasts makes the in-universe internet feel as textured and incomprehensible as our own. Not only is there a lot of funny to be had here but the story is also very compelling and full of mystery in it’s own right, full of poignant commentary about truth, community and friendship behind all the silliness. This show is an absolute blast from the brilliant mind of Jeremy Ellett. Also I love that they include the cast credits in the beginning of the episode!

three headcanons .

John just doesn't react to horrific things anymore. Or at the very least, shows barely any outward reaction. He's already seen too much. He's traumatised, desensitised. Nothing seems to bother him anymore, which can be kind of unnerving to others around him.

Any wounds inflicted upon him by demons, or things of a demonic nature, heal completely without leaving any scars. This is a part of John's apparent non-human nature. Scars from earthy sources (eg. his surgery scars) still remain as normal, however.

This headcanon is also mostly implied in-game, but everything about John's life has been monitored and manipulated. Primarily by the cult, but also by some agents of the church trying to keep him out of their hands. John going back to the Martin house in 87 is probably the first true act of free will he ever performed in his life.

three things your character likes doing in their free time .

Reading - John's primary pastime is reading and research. Partially for work, preparing homilies for Mass and such, but he also loves reading on philosophy and psychology, and also more recently books on the occult and counter-culture theology. He doesn't often read non-fiction, but he likes sci-fi and fantasy based things.

Cooking - John's something of a foodie. He originally learned to cook because it was the cheapest option for his appetite, but it became a small form of therapy for him. Also he enjoys cooking for others. Its kind of a way for him to show love and appreciation to people he cares for.

Sleeping - Kind of a silly one on the surface, but John sleeps so terribly at night, that he often takes naps during the day, specifically while the others are working so that he can hear them nearby. Hearing them moving around nearby, or watching tv, or listening to the radio reassures him enough that he can sleep more restfully that he could at night when everything is quiet.

people your character likes / loves.

Lisa Pearson - His oldest friend. The one person he believes truly understands him. Trusts her with everything. Doesn't ever want to risk losing her again. She means everything to him.

Father Garcia - His rock. A mentor, a guide, a trusted friend. He helps keep John grounded and pulls him back to reality when needed. Loves him dearly.

Molly - It's very complicated, and while he does harbour a lot of anger and bitterness towards her, he does still love her... But probably not in a healthy way

Valentino (@ruinedreliquaries) - John likes Father Lecce, but also worries about him a lot. He thinks the other priest is a little in over his head, much like he used to be at the start. He doesn't want him to make the same kind of mistakes he did.

two things your character regrets.

The '86 exorcism, I really needn't say more. He still blames himself.

Getting married. Or at least, rushing into it. It was an act of desperation to have some normalcy in his life, trying to cover up the problem and hoping it goes away.

one phobia your character has.

(We know about coulrophobia so I'm not gonna bring that up.) iatrophobia - Fear of doctors or medical settings. Thanks to his stay at Yale. The most contact he has is collecting prescriptions for his medication, and even then he has to be accompanied. If he's sick or injured he'd just avoid going to the doctor as much as possible.
