Fungi February: The lobster mushroom is not actually a mushroom, but a parasitic fungus. The fungus significantly alters its host, changing the shape, texture, taste, and even chemical composition!
Disclaimer: Don’t rely on pictures of cute mushrooms with eyes to accurately identify edible mushrooms. At best the wrong one will taste bad, at worst it’ll be deadly!

Some edible mushrooms I've found (and foraged) recently! Chicken of the woods, pheasants back, lobster, and golden chanterelles. Unfortunately no morels for me this year, and I'm still looking for oysters
Disclaimer: please do not eat random mushrooms if you are not 100% certain about the identification

Lobster Mushroom White Manhatten Chowder
It has dehydrated Lobster and Oyster mushrooms foraged previously and some of which are campfire smoked. With white tomatoes, white carrot, celeriac, parsley root, potatoes, corn, onion, bay leaf, and thyme excavated from the snow bank in the garden. Also simmered with white wine, sherry and olive oil. Vegan. And so very hearty.

Lobster mushroom (hypomyces lactifluorum) is a wonderful fungi used to create various natural colors for your textile and craft projects. It brings a range of pink, peach, orange and purple to protein fibers like wool & silk. Lobster mushrooms are pH sensitive, so you can expand your natural dye palette by adding household items like vinegar and baking soda to shift the color to an acidic or alkaline bath. If you are a fungi fanatic with a love of foraging, the lobster mushroom is ready to be picked! This tutorial will show you how to make dye from this mushroom, shift colors with pH modifiers, as well as the resulting color swatch samples on wool yarn.

Four of Wands. Art by Joseph Buckley, from The Mushroom Hunter's Tarot.
The Four of Wands is represented by the lobster mushroom (Hypomyces lactiflourem), which is, technically speaking, not a mushroom. It’s a parasitic fungus that grows primarily on Lactarius and Russula mushrooms, turning them an orange reddish color. The parasite transforms a rather tasteless mushroom into one of the most desirable, sought after mushrooms for their seafood-like flavor.
By the time the parasite is finished with the host mushroom, only trace amounts of the host mushroom’s DNA remains. It’s a wonderful, unique, and complete transformation, bringing two species of fungi together to create something far greater than the sum of its parts.
Keywords: Celebration, reunion, harmony, family.

I have returned from 3 days in the woods foraging and camping! (Ace is the cute one in the baseball hat and I’m the tall awkward one with a basket of mushrooms). We came close to 4 pounds (a bit over 2 kg) of mushrooms in total but ate about a quarter of them while camping.
Here’s some of my faves. The white on is a puffball mushroom, the yellow ones are chanterelles (which are my absolute favorites), and the orange one (the upper right corner) is a lobster mushroom which technically isn’t a mushroom but actually a parasitic ascomycete fungus that grows on some types of russula mushrooms. It is completely edible though.
