You ever just find a video that perfectly captures the vibe of you OCs, and then you go feral over it? Hi that's me right now. So in the context of Wish, At All Costs is not a romantic love song, it's more of like, a familial love song. But in the context of this animatic, it works very well in a romantic context while still feeling a little familial, and I really love that.
And now I'm using this as an excuse to talk about my nutcracker OCs. Y'all this is so Auran and Loraine it hurts. This is exactly their energy and it's wrecking me AAHHHHHHHH! Like, okay so in the first audio skit I ever did for these two, Auran has specifically learned how to use his magic to make an Aurora Borealis, and he did this for Loraine. I mean it's also for him, but it's very much so he can surprise her and let her relive the memories of their adventure in the Great North together, where the sky was like that all the time. There is nothing these two wouldn't do for each other, and while I think Loraine is the one that starts out as the adventurous, curious one, Auran grows to become just as playful and would absolutely do stuff like this. He is such a gentle Jack Frost and I love that for him. And aaahhhh, the way Loraine craves the freedom of flight, the freedom of getting to choose who she is, it's wrecking me. Just, they are so good and sweet and cute together and aaaahhhh my entire heart. I need them kissing and dancing in the sky stat. AAAAHHHHHH! I don't ever feel this strongly about my OCs romancing, like I am not someone who writes a ton of relationships of this nature but this is wrecking me, hardcore. I'm a cauldron of passion that is OVERFLOWING!

Nutcracker Season 2022 Day 1 - Nutcracker meeting other nutcrackers
And so, it begins! I skipped out on Goretober so I wanted to do this! Also, it’s just fun drawing nutcrackers. The prompts for this year are really interesting and going to serve as a challenge! So here’s my boy Winter, and Auran who belongs to my dear friend @inkabelledesigns Check out her stuff! She does lots of cool drawings, doll customizations, and voice acting. We talked about how our boys would interact. Auran is a dancer, and so is Winter. But Winter is pretty shy about it. So here’s the result of that conversation. Note their girlfriends applauding in the background. Also, I tried coloring this piece, my markers are kinda old. A lot of them are dried out so it kinda limits my colors. So I’m likely not gonna colors all my nutcracker season pieces. But I may colors a select few, we’ll see…

100 of my favorite non hip hop releases from 2022. I made a seperate list for hip hop already which you can find here if you’re interested. 2022 will go down as a memorable year for me not just for the sheer quantity of great releases, but also because i feel that all my of my favorite genres had a chance to shine. I started returning to my hardcore/punk/metal roots within the last couple years and 2022 was the first time in recent memory where I really felt like I was fully tapped in. There were so many highly anticipated releases from a ton of different artists last year, and the majority lived up to the hype for me. Grindcore, Mathcore, and Post-Hardcore seems to have been making a huge comeback with some incredible new efforts from modern genre staples like Wormrot, Callous Daoboys, Brutus, Greyhaven, Birds in row, Knoll, and Cloud Rat. Not to mention the much welcome return of some legendary acts including Gospel, Sawtooth Grin, and City of Caterpillar. I’m sure there’s plenty of stuff I missed out on too, so feel free to hit me with any recommendations you might have or just let me know what projects you enjoyed the most last year. Oh and you can also click the titles of any of these albums and it’ll take you to the bandcamp or spotify page where you can check them out if you’d like. Peace. Chart with album titles 1. A Ninja Warrior Love Story - Part 4
Time for a little backstory on Lily! This time around, we get to meet Ray and Eleanor as well as learn a little more about Lily’s past. I hope you all enjoy this story! Let me know if you’d like to be included in the tag list for other chapters!
taglist:
@maeleeme
Word Count: 2,039
CW: confrontation; hard-conversations
For the first time in almost 2 years, Lily had nightmares about Carter. They started Friday night after Henry left and now, on Sunday morning, she woke with a start. Sweat beading on her forehead, her heart beating fast and loud in her chest. She sat up in bed, sucking air in as deeply as her lungs would allow. She pulled her knees up to her chest and sat like that for a while, ruminating and attempting to calm herself down. Carter was in New York, thousands of miles away from her.
A notification from her phone pulled her back to reality. She reached out for her phone, opening it to find a message from Henry.
Good morning, Lily :) Attached to the message was a picture of Kal dozing in Henry’s hotel room. Another message followed.
Will we see you at the gym this morning? Lily stared incredulously at the message. The image of Henry and Celeste making out in her bar was fresh in her mind. It brought a sudden wave of anger, frustration, insecurity, and annoyance to the surface. She huffed as she responded.
No, I’m busy. If you need any help, why don’t you just ask Celeste? She hit send and immediately regretted it. She was never the best at controlling her temper, but after her situation with Carter, that fuse shortened even more. Shaking her head, Lily dropped her phone on the bed and climbed out. She busied herself around the apartment, picking things up, setting them down, moving things around only to put them back as they were. She was aimlessly working because she didn’t want to look at her phone. She didn’t want to talk to Henry. He was a distraction, a mistake. A beautiful, handsome, mistake.
After a while, she decided to go shower before leaving for Ray and Eleanors. Every Sunday for the last few years, Lily went to Ray and Eleanor Burton’s for a late lunch/early dinner. This was their tradition and her way of paying respect to the people that took her in after college. They were there to help her pick up the pieces after her dad sold everything and disappeared. The two themselves were pillars of the community. Ray owned and operated the barbershop for as long as she could remember and Eleanor was a cafeteria lady in their school district for over 40-years. Lily wasn’t the only kid they helped though. Unfortunately, the two couldn’t have kids of their own, so they helped everyone else. They helped Lily, her best friend Mar, and several other kids over the years. Lily was the only one still in town, so she felt obligated to pay her respects.
Done with her shower, Lily dressed in a simple t-shirt and jeans and started getting her things together to leave. She grabbed her phone from the bed and it buzzed, indicating a new message. She checked and was unsurprised to see it was from Henry. She decided to ignore it and instead, make a call to her uncle Travis. Travis was her mom’s brother. He was helping Lily and her dad pay for the rehab hospital her dad was currently in. Lily dialed his number. The phone rang three times before going to voice mail. She sighed as she waited for the beep.
“Uh, hey Uncle Travis, it’s me. Lily. I hope you’re doing well. I just wanted to let you know I was going to see my dad next week, so I’ll have an update for you. If you want, I can text it since you always seem to be busy. Anyway, I hope you, Margot, and the kids are doing okay. Bye.” She hung up the phone and somehow felt worse than she did before. Burying the pain, she tossed her phone in her bag and marching out to her truck.
On the way to the other house, Lily argued with herself, going back and forth as to why Henry was bad news. She huffed and puffed as she came up with fake arguments and more. Even still, by the time she had pulled up to Ray and Eleanors, she couldn’t resist. She pulled her phone out of her bag to see if Henry had responded. He had.
Oh, okay…Lily have I done something to upset you? Once again, she stared incredulously at her phone. Would did he think he was? Lily snapped her jaw shut and angrily typed out a response.
You think, Henry? I watched you make out and then leave with Celeste the other night. Do what you want, but don’t lead me on in the process. With a final huff, Lily turned her phone on silent, tossed it in her bag, and went straight into the house. The smell of chicken fried steak immediately hit her and calmed her down. Eleanor almost always cooked the same thing each week and Lily didn’t mind at all. The sound of her footsteps must have been loud enough, because Ray’s head popped out from around the corner of the kitchen. A wide grin stretched across his face.
“Hey kid,” he said, joy evident in his voice. The rest of him walked around the corner and toward Lily, embracing her in a bear hug. She breathed in his typical smell of mint and musk. She smiled.
“Hey Ray,” she replied into his chest. He leaned back and pushed her away from him gently so he could look at her.
“You look good kid,” he said. Lily smiled. He always said this every time he saw her. The two walked to the kitchen together where Eleanor was working away making food. “Ellie, Lily is here,” Ray said. Lily could hear the pride in his voice. It brought a pain to her chest that she couldn’t identify. Ellie turned around and smiled brightly at the sight of Lily.
“Oh, Lily you’re here!” she exclaimed. She moved Lily quickly and embraced her in a tight hug. Eleanor was a beautiful woman of 60 with a head of white-blonde hair, hooded brown eyes, and rosy cheeks even at this age. She had a smile that made Lily ache and feel comforted at the same time. Lily hugged Eleanor back.
“Can I help with anything Ellie?” Lily asked. Eleanor bobbed her head.
“You sure can. You can get started on the salad, dear,” Eleanor gestured to the pile of salad fixings on the counter and Lily got started. Everyone worked in silence before Ray finally finished what he was doing and left to go watch the television while he waited for the girls to finish. It was during this time that Eleanor took her opportunity to quietly ask Lily about her dad and her uncle.
“So Lily, how’s your dad?” she asked. Lily grimaced and didn’t look up from what she was doing.
“He’s fine, I think,” Lily responded. “I’m going to see him next week.” Eleanor’s head bobbed.
“Good, good,” she said. The steaks sizzled in the pans and Lily focused on that instead of what she wanted to say. “And your Uncle Travis?” she asked. Lily took in a deep breath.
“I called him today, but he didn’t pick up. I’ll call him again after I go see my dad,” she said. Eleanor didn’t say anything and Lily snuck a glance in her direction. She could see the distress all of this caused her and it broke Lily’s heart. It wasn’t her burden to bear and yet she still carried it as if it were. Taking her own deep breath, Lily watched as Eleanor steadied herself for her next response.
“Well, we’ll just see how things go, won’t we?” she replied. Lily smiled lightly, unsure of how to respond. They worked again in silence until it was time to eat. Everyone piled around the Burton’s kitchen table and dug into the meal in front of them. Once everyone had a plate full of food and had eaten some did Eleanor start questioning Lily again.
“So Lily, how are things at the gym?” she asked. Lily smiled, appreciative that Eleanor supported her though she didn’t fully understand what it was she did.
“Things are good. I’m actually helping Donovan train some actors for a movie,” Lily replied. Eleanor smiled wide.
“Well that sounds exciting!” she exclaimed, taking a bite of her own chicken fried steak. Lily smiled warmly at her.
“Are you still working at that bar?” Ray asked between bites. Lily was hoping to avoid that question.
“Yes, I am,” she said, not looking him in the eye. He gruffed and Eleanor sighed.
“I don’t like the idea of you working in that bar,” she said.
“I know, but Loraine needs the help and I need the extra income,” Lily replied.
“You could have asked us,” Ray said, the pain not hidden from his voice at all. Lily’s shoulders sagged a little.
“I’m saving up the money so I can go see Mar,” Lily tried to explain. “I wouldn’t ask you to pay for something that you can’t enjoy as well.” Lily watched as Ray processed this information. When he was seemingly satisfied with her answer, he went back to eating. Everyone finished their plates and Lily got up to start cleaning up. She cleaned all the dishes. While she did that, Eleanor packed up several Tupperware containers for her to take back home. Ray watched closely.
“Ellie, save some for me at least!” he exclaimed as she worked. Ellie constantly shushed him and did what she wanted. Lily smiled to herself listening to the exchange. She loved the easy banter the two had. When they were done, they waved Lily off as she drove back to her tiny apartment.
Back home, Lily stuffed her food into her fridge, planning out what to eat over the next few days. She grabbed an armful of laundry and got started on that before settling down to start her guiltiest of guilty pleasures The Masked Singer. It was right as she was getting comfortable when she remembered her phone and Henry. Quickly, she grabbed her phone to find a missed call and two missed messages from him. A little surprised, Lily read the messages first.
Are you available to talk? Can I call you?
You’re not available or you’re avoiding me. Either way, it’s justified, I suppose. Please call me back.
Lily sighed and clicked on the voicemail. Henry’s English accent filled your ear and made your heartache.
“Lily, please call me back. We need to talk about what has happened. You likely won’t believe me but,” he paused. “I wasn’t, I’m not trying to lead you on. Please call me back.” Lily slumped back into her couch as she thought about everything he had said. He was right, she didn’t believe him. She had learned to never trust only someone’s word, but she wanted to. She desperately wanted to believe him because something about him seemed different. She hit dial and waited for Henry to pick up, almost hoping that he wouldn’t.
“Hello?” he asked when his end picked up. For a moment Lily panicked. “Hello?” he asked again.
“Henry,” Lily said and she heard an intake of breath on the other end.
“Lily,” he breathed. Her name said by him made her heartache. “You called me back.” he said.
“Yes, I did,” she said. “But only to tell you that you aren’t obligated to give me a reason. If you like Celeste or just want to sleep with her, that’s fine. I don’t care. Just leave me out of it.” She heard Henry sigh loudly.
“I don’t, no, Lily,” Henry stumbled over his words. “I don’t like Celeste. I don’t want to sleep with her, fuck,” he muttered under his breath. “Can I meet you somewhere? Can we talk about this? In person?” he asked. Lily checked the time.
“Not tonight, I have laundry and other chores to get done,” she replied. “Would you be willing to meet me tomorrow for lunch?” she asked.
“Yes,” Henry said quickly. “Tell me where and I’ll be there.” there was an excitement in his voice. It was faint, but it was there. It stirred something in Lily that she didn’t understand.

Nutcracker Season - Tarot Cards
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A huge thank you to @artsynoova for putting on a fantastic Nutcracker Season once again! Finally, I got to participate in one. XD
So I'm gonna be real with you, I don't know tarot cards as well as I could, so I asked my dear friend @rosiegardenlove for help to find the right cards for my kids. She had a lot of great suggestions, and in the end, we settled on Strength for Auran and Page of Swords for Loraine. I feel like the meanings really suit both of them. I had SO MUCH FUN working on these, it's been far too long since we drew them! Especially love that I got to show off their dust magic visually, I don't think you guys have seen that before.

📚 for Auran, Loraine, Manny and any other character of your choosing from your nutcracker stuff, go ham my guy
📚 BOOKS — what level of education has your oc most recently completed/is currently in (GED, undergraduate, grad school, phd, etc)?
Okay, so this is a tough one. All three of these characters are dolls and wouldn't have had access to a formal general education like you and I do. Or at least, I haven't developed what that looks like in this world. Like, obviously all of them would need to learn math, they use math every day for stuff like sewing, counting beats, battle strategy, measuring out magic dust for combinations, calculating travel distances, etc. But where did they learn it? As young dolls, did they have school, were they required to go through some basic training to be well rounded? Or is that just magicked into them from the start? Can you even do that?
I think Captain Dieter would be really impatient with the guard and have them go through maybe an intense month of schooling that covers most things (probably skimps on anything regarding literary analysis, can't have too many thinkers to challenge him, which feels horrible when I say that out loud). The royal guard likely has up to a basic high school level education, but it's a touch incomplete. This is what Auran would start out with before transferring to the ballet.
Odette and Siegfried by contrast would be very thoughtful about schooling their dancers, there's probably a great deal of lessons in typical subjects besides what they need to learn for ballet. I can imagine there's an emphasis on history given that's really important to them, but there's also a lot on language arts. If any of the dolls of my world could speak a different language or have a vast understanding of English, it would be the ones at the ballet, given music has a myriad of terms that derive from French and Italian. I think they'd also encourage exploration into other subjects. Loraine takes an interest in studying magic and science, and it's ultimately what lands her in her position of studying magic dust to understand its intricate properties. Auran by contrast has more of a focus on ballet and music, but as a side hobby, he enjoys books on gardening and learns a lot from those for his small vegetable garden.
Manny....Manny is probably the one who got the shortest end of the stick, but he's probably more educated than both Auran and Loraine, who mind you, are fairly smart. Manny had no education beyond math and textiles, his employer simply didn't value it. So he went to great lengths to homeschool not only himself, but his fellow employees, using tools from Equinox 's rich library system. While his employer was almost quick to forbid it, Manny is incredibly smart and managed to convince them that this was really in their best interest so that their business would be run more competently, and it worked out. Manny manages to get himself through a high school level of education, but he's also got what's effectively a college level education of business, as he was secretly studying to get out of his bad situation. Though one may argue that he also has a strength in street smarts, he knows how to play the game of life. I can imagine he's also taken at least one acting class in his life.
That was a lot for all three and their respective peers. XD I suppose after Captain Dieter is no longer running the guard, there is probably an emphasis on better education and easing the guard into things ala Queen Clara. She would want her soldiers to have those tools after learning Dieter was being deliberately foolish. Especially in making sure they knew their history and had some extracurriculars outside of preparing for battle. This is probably how Minstrel achieves his dream of having a proper band for the guard rather than just playing a war drum.

Okay I'll give you a few!
💯 For Manny
🎶 For Loraine
💘 For Auran
And happy new year!
Happy New Year to you too Noova!
Three facts you may not know about Manny?
I've actually gotten a couple of this one for Manny! (Thank you guys, I'm DELIGHTED you want to hear about this guy!) So let's start off. Manny Quinn is our fabulous tailor. He is the primary designer for both of their majesties, King Hans and Queen Clara, the royal guard, and the Swansong Ballet. Manny and his assistant, Phil, are both mannequin dolls, and a unique quirk of their doll line is that they can swap out their parts to create different body types to build off of. Manny doesn't need to do this, seeing as he has a shape shifting magic to change his appearance, but he still uses alternate wooden parts to keep people from knowing about his abilities, as well as to make it easier if another one of his employees has to work on something while he's away. Manny travels a lot, he's built up quite a repertoire of connections across all corners of the kingdom and regularly keeps in touch with them. I don't have a ton of them developed, but one of my personal favorites is his silk manufacturer in the eastern spring region, she's a spider and she's really cool.
What type of music does Loraine like? Does she listen to music often?
Loraine loves many types of music! I think she's big on the typical big orchestra ballet music, but she's so excited to experience music from all around Equinox and all of its rich cultures. She's rather fond of violins and high energy music. (Admittedly I've had a lot of this song by Celtic Woman on lately, and it's very much the staple of Loraine's vibe to me.) And of course, she loves harps and lyres. Her brother Kallahan plays, and she loves his sound.
What/who does Auran consider most important to him?
Loraine is the most important person to Auran. She is everything, his love, his hopes, his dreams, the person he wants to spend the rest of his life with. She gave him a reason to believe he could be more than what the world told him he was, and he has never let go of that. I think, the most important thing to him is his sense of self.
Auran struggles a lot with feeling like he is enough. There is such a stigma for nutcrackers that defect from the guard while Dieter was in power. He treated them like they were worthless if they couldn't defend the kingdom, that they were unworthy of being called nutcrackers if they could not honor that legacy. But he was wrong. Auran is still a nutcracker, he may not fight in wars, but he is a guardian none the less. He has the spirit of someone who cares for the people, and he uses his gifts to make the world a better place. It's not the same kind of impact as the guard, but it is an impact no less. He has a great pride in being a nutcracker, and this is a big part of why his curse hits him so hard. If he is not a nutcracker, what is he? But being a nutcracker is something you feel in your heart, not something you need to be physically. You can't take that away from his heart.

For Auran, Loraine, and out of morbid curiosity, Dieter
Do my OCs have any tattoos? Gosh, y'know the answer may surprise you. So all of these OCs are living dolls, so I don't think they have tattoos in the traditional sense, but they absolutely have extra paint work that serves a similar function. They also usually have a mark from their maker to designate who built them. Loraine has the Celeste mark, Dieter I'm undecided on (since I have yet to develop a ton of craftsmen), and Auran's is one no one knows the origin of (except me, muahahaha).
Loraine is the obvious one, she has this rose painted over her eye, which is a reminder of how far she's come. Auran used to have a tattoo on his back actually! He doesn't anymore since I changed direction, but it was originally a tossup between the Equinox compass emblem (which is now on the back of his coat), and a pair of gold and purple butterfly wings with a diamond pattern. Maybe one day I will come back to it, I feel like Auran would be a "wings on back" kind of tattoo guy.
Dieter...I don't think he has any tattoos, but oh boy would it be fun to give him one. Y'know I'm gonna hurt you a little bit Falcon: he might have a partridge if I keep him caring about Nicholas. Nicholas has the vibe of loving birds, and a partridge in a pear tree is just his vibe. XD

Loraine Celeste (Custom Doll, July 2022)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Base Doll: Freddie Facilier from Descendants
Clothing Pattern: (I modified it slightly to have longer sleeves and a tiered skirt.)
Normally I will wait until my camera photos are spruced up on the computer, but I can't contain myself (meaning you'll be seeing a lot more of Loraine when I do get to share her full photoshoot). This is all just stuff from my phone. Meet Loraine Celeste, my third attempt at making this character in doll form! XD
Loraine is formerly a ballerina doll that wanted a taste for what else the world has to offer, so she secretly switched places with a nutcracker soldier, Auran Dulce, to see what his stance in life had to offer. While she still hasn't figured out where she belongs in the world, Loraine is an adventurous spirit that has so much love for the world and all its wonders. She travels across the kingdom of Equinox in search of where she's meant to be, and in the process, she makes many new friends.
Her doll was a process, I've attempted to make her before, but it just never turned out right before now, and part of it was that I didn't understand her character. She needed to be free like the wind, and that meant giving her room to explore, so her design changed to be more functional for that, something bright with some flow that also can blend in somewhat. I also wanted her to match Auran in having facial detailing. He has a scar that's filled in with gold, much like the process of kintsugi. Meanwhile she has a rose painted on the opposite side of her face, a symbol of the fact that while she is beautiful, she is a force to be reckoned with, a wild part of nature that has thorns amidst her grace and elegance. Loraine is tough, but she is also gentle and kind when the occasion calls for it. The rose has become an important symbol in developing her, and thus I wanted to photograph her with my mom's rose bushes. Aren't they lovely? My mom has done such a good job taking care of them.
Loraine is one of a group of dolls I've finished since my dad passed away, and it feels fitting somehow. I haven't worked on dolls in a long time, not since April, since Dad was sick and I just, didn't have the heart or energy for it. But something my dad wanted was for me (and all of my siblings) to be happy finding my path in life. And the truth is, I haven't really found that yet. I don't know what will make me happy, but Loraine's story is part of my process for figuring it out. As she goes on her adventures, I'm going to go on mine, we're gonna figure it out together. And with Auran by her side or sending her letters as she travels, I know she'll figure it out, just as I'm figuring it out. Everyone needs a friend like that. It's been my dream for ages to go and write a published fantasy novel, and I'm considering shifting gears to find a place in the publishing industry as a job to gain experience before I go and share this story with the world. I dunno how it'll work out, but that's what I told my dad the last time we got to talk about this. Telling stories is a core part of who I am, I would feel incomplete without them, so I'm gonna find a place in the world where I can do that. The Chronicles of Equinox are something I care a lot about, I love these characters and they light up my life. I want to make it real somehow.
