from a fic that is *le gasp* actually going to be published to an ao3 near you in the next week or so.

Meanwhile, he keeps blowing smoke out into the night sky. Betty isn’t as bothered by the smell as she usually is, but still she tells him: “You know that’s bad for you, right?”

He lets out a half-hearted chuckle. “What isn’t?”

Betty doesn’t answer that.

After a few more seconds, she drags the toe of her right shoe across the pavement. When she pivots to face him, he’s already looking at her, eyes crinkled at the edges in amusement. She can’t stand the smirk on his lips. With a fortifying breath, she says, “Goodnight, then, beanie boy.”

“Goodnight, then, ponytail girl,” he responds, putting the cigarette out under the sole of his heavy black boot. “Need any help getting home?”

The cold’s sobered her up a bit now, and the smell of smoke is starting to get to her. Her apartment’s only a few blocks down, the street well-lit. “‘Course not,” she replies.

He nods, leans back against the brick of the apartment building. “See you around then.”

“See you,” she whispers into the heavy night air. It’s most likely they won’t actually ever see each other again, as is the case with so many of these party-adjacent encounters, but it feels nice to leave the possibility open, so she does.

"Have you heard of the placebo effect?"

Willow hummed. "Pretend I haven't."

"Okay, so. Normally, people use medicine to help them feel better, right?" Wilson said while gathering and sorting the salve ingredients.

Willow scowled. "Yeah, I'm not THAT dumb, Wilson."

"Right, of course, sorry. But imagine if what someone thought was medicine really wasn't?" He eyeballed the measurements of each ingredient- something Willow had once called a guesstimate.

"Poison?" Willow offered.

"No, nothing bad. Harmless. Sugar, maybe. If someone thought sugar was medicine, what would happen?" He ground them into a paste.

"Well... they're stupid and it wouldn't work, would it?" Willow shrugged.

"That's just it! You'd think so, but because they expect the sugar to help them, they still feel better after taking it!"

"For real?"

"Yes-it's a well documented phenomena-it's called the placebo effect."

"Wait." Willow gave him and the salve a suspicious squint. "But this stuff is real, right?"

"Yes, it's very real. Very scientific. Would you like me to explain how it works?"

"Mmm, maybe later?"

"Okay! Hold still, then- this may sting a little."
