continuing our birb discussion... i wanted to ask, are there any real purple birbs?

(no pressure to answer!)

Mmmmm it's 4am rn bcuz I'm a bit of a fool and was drawing my Dungeons and Dragons Owlin character sooo beware my rambling and nonsense ahah ;;

Anyways! There are so many purple birds out there, it's very lovely. However you said "real" purple birds and I may be overthinking this cuz it's late but it reminded me about how blue isn't a real color on birds because there's nothing in a bird's diet that allows for that sort of blue pigmentation. Yknow how bell peppers can be like...red and yellow? Yeah it's cuz they have some antioxidants called carotenoids that create the red/yellow/orange pigmentation. (Pink flamingos are pink cuz shrimp...what would blue birds eat to make them blue? There's really not a blue fruit out there. Don't say blueberries.) And the answer researchers found out for blue on birds feathers is cuz of light wavelength.

Protein structure specifically keratin in their feathers (stuff ur nails and hair is made up of!) kinda refract the blue wavelengths and since all color we see are the colors that aren't absorbed...well. blue!

But for purple--and this is a guess cuz im pulling this out from what i remember of my nutrition class--purple may be their true color. Cuz carotenoids can also mix and match structurally and allow for some green and off kilter blue pigmentation to occur. And yknow. Blue and red = purple.

So. Maybe purple birds. Will do research later. But there are many. Many lovely ones that we can actually see. For example, and my favorite cuz I participated in a volunteer opportunity for these guys:

Purple Martins! What lovely guys, they flock in the hundreds. Seeing these guys pass by overhead was so cool. Ok maybe they're a bit more indigo but they're adorable regardless.

Though if you want a very very vibrant purple.

Violet-backed Starlings. What a banger bird. This bird just knew how to win in the fashion show. This tone of purple with white? Urgh. Slaps. Iridescent too.. lovely.

You're a corvid enjoyer. I think you'll get a kick outta this guy.

Purplish Jay! No I'm not kidding about the name. It's kinda funny cuz it's like hmmm you're not really purple but still purple enough sjjshaha silly!! I love human naming conventions

I know there's a bunch of hummingbirds that have purple feathers I wonder why. Oh flowers. Flowers maybe?? Nectar?? *shrugging noises*

Lucifer hummingbirds! Have no clue why they named such a tiny lil guy with such a name but humans are silly. Just like birds. I wish there was carcinisation but for birds. Ornithonisation?

Ok I'm not making sense anymore here's the names of other purple birds off the top of my head:

violet-crowned hummingbird.

Purple breasted cotinga. (Cotingas are such goofy birds).

Purple honeycreeper (what a name. Imagine creeping on honey i dont think they even eat honey, just flower nectar.)

Purple Grenadier (finches beloved)

And I forgot the name but it's a Turaco

September 14, 2020 - Lovely Cotinga (Cotinga amabilis)

These cotingas are found in humid lowland forests of southern Mexico and Central America, in parts of Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. They eat mostly fruit, as well as invertebrates and some small vertebrates, often foraging alone in the canopy. Though they are mostly silent, their wings sometimes make a rattling sound as they fly.

Hi, could I request Bruno x Reader who has birds, similar to how Bruno has rats?

A/n: oh god this is so cute.

While he was happy that he was back, Bruno was starting to regret his decision for leaving the walls. Even when his little rat friends followed him, he couldn’t help it. They were his only friends, he couldn’t help but feel safe when they were with him. Bruno started to wonder if he should just go back into the walls until he met you.

You were always surrounded by birds, small birds that would perch on your fingers. Bigger ones that would sit on your shoulder, nuzzling in your cheek. Those little creatures seemed to love you just like how much his rats cared for him. He’d watch you from afar though he would always be scared that his rats would get snatched by one of your friends but then he’d just scowled himself because you would never let that happen.

Bruno always felt to nervous to talk to you, what if me messed something up? What if his rats scared you away? God what if you were afraid of him? Whenever you would come over to speak with his sisters he’d blurt out a hi then run off, damn he could already feel the sweat forming on the palm of his hands.

“Bruno?” His boy suddenly tensed, that was your voice. Slowly turning to face you the man let out a nervous laugh. One of his rats poking out from his hair, the little nose twitching as it’s beady eyes stared at you.

“Oh..h-hello y/n” 

Giving him a kind smile, the Cotinga that sat upon your shoulder let out a small chirp at Bruno. Seeming to call your other bird over, at playful Toucan perching it’s self upon the side of your arm that was free. Bruno wasn’t so sure he trusted to look in that one’s eye.

“Umm is something wrong? The birds....they weren’t scaring the rats were they?”

“What! No!...no d-don’t think that...” Glancing down he watched as the rat leap at you. He wanted to scream, he wanted to run but he was surprised to watch you catch the plump animal as a laugh escaped your lips.

Giving Bruno a smile, your let your finger scratch the guys tummy. “He’s rather adorable Bruno. You must love them, he’s very well taken care of.”

Bruno suddenly felt his face grow warm, his heart was racing now. “You...really?...I..I do...I do...they mean a lot to me. They” He gave you a weak smile. “They were my only friends for a while.” He muttered lowering his gaze.

“Oh...I’m sorry to hear that Bruno, but you don’t have to be alone now...I would.” Stopping yourself, you weren’t sure that you were ready to admit your crush yet. “You did a good thing, I hate to imagine what would happen to him if you haven’t come along and, well I know how your feel. My birds, they’re my best friends too.” You let out a laugh as your Toucan nuzzled it’s beak into your neck, Bruno let out his own laugh as the Cotinga landed on his shoulder, the tiny bird making its home in his hair.

“Y/n.”

“Hnn?” You glanced up, the rat now sitting comfortably on your shoulder. 

“Would you...would you like to go for a walk with me..someday?”

Giving him a soft smile you reached out to grab his hand. “How about now.”

“Sounds perfect.”

Here are the inspirations for Tipsy, my Angry Birds OC.

Pompadour cotinga: She's based on this species of birds. Even though this species is sexually dimorphic and the females are much more plain compared to males, I made her colorful because Rovio made Gale with bright feathers despite that fact that she's a violet-backed starling, which is also a sexually dimorphic species of birds. So if Rovio decided to ignore biology in order to make the palette of their character colorful, I thought I may too.

Berryshine/Berry Punch (My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic): This background pony has a Cutie Mark consisting of grapes and a strawberry, which are two common ingredients in wine, and due to this, she's sometimes hinted to be a drunk in canon and often showed to be in fanon, and even the series creator has mentioned that she had nicknamed the character "Pinot Noir" after her own favorite wine. My OC has a bit simular situation: she's wine-themed (but doesn't reference any particular brend, just the wine aesthetic in general) and can drink every now and then. Plus, Berryshine was shown to make berry drinks, and Tipsy makes wine herself from the berries that grow near the place she lives.

Jackie Lynn Thomas (Star VS The Forces Of Evil): Just like Jackie, Tipsy is a pretty chill person who enjoys both wild parties and quiet get-togethers as long as she and everyone around her are having fun.

Eda Clawthorne (The Owl House): Both are confident, sassy, flirty ladies who, despite their carefree attitude, have a "responsible mother" side to them (shown by both having fun with kids and making them behave) and are willing to care for and protect those they love. 

Vidalia (Steven Universe): Both are good motherly figures who, despite being sarcastic and showing their "bad girl" energy, are openly kind, reliable, empathetic and supportive ladies.
