Another piece I did for The Nib back in 2015! Gonna keep posting these until they shut down at the end of the summer. It was such a treat to hear that Matt and the whole editorial team just won an Eisner for their work on the magazine and website. Much-deserved.

Anyway: this is a parody and isn't representative of every screenwriter's experience, but it certainly feels relevant with all the strikes rolling out right now. Did you know what kind of credit you get on a film directly impacts how much you're paid? For writers you'll see "created by," "written by," "story by," and all sorts of other things, all of which translate to different levels of compensation! (Highlander, for example, has Story by Gregory Widen and Screenplay by my dad and his writing partner, Larry Ferguson.) The Writer's Guild is often responsible for arbitrating those decisions. They have a whole MANUAL to help writers understand the process. It rules.

[Y] / [N]” I tucked that note into your bicycle handlebars eleven years ago. It landed us across the hall from one another in an over-occupied three-bedroom house on Southeast 45th Avenue. We were chaotic college kids who didn't eat together often. When we did, it was cookies made vast in the cast-iron skillet, or haphazard potlucks thrown together at birthdays. You and I never left for our morning classes at the same time, but I can still measure our entire relationship in breakfasts.

The ever-magnificent Lucy Bellwood has written this stunning, heart-filling essay about what it means to make a life with the person who is destined to be your Home. It is one of the most beautiful things I've ever read. This essay is accompanied by @lucybellwood's recipe for The Eggs, a preparation of (you guessed it) eggs that's secretly a whole meal. I've had the privilege of getting to eat these eggs and can testify that they are wildly delicious. You'll never eat breakfast the same way again.

Comic Book Saturday

It’s a graphic novel based on Lucy Bellwood’s social media posts, and it’s all about how to be a sailor. It has funny things, and maybe helpful things, and a whole chapter on Scurvey? (Eat your Oranges!) Oh, and, she can have climbing the rigging. Yep. Not something that I have need to do at all for sure.

It was hilarious and just such a great collection of comics.

I saw you photo of the ship you sail in response to Lucy Bellwood’s sail anatomy and would love to hear more about it! I’ve never seen a square rigger with … is that a tiny crane for loading? So cool!

What's this? An excuse to talk about The Best Barque In The World, SV Tenacious? Well, I don't mind if I do!

First, yes, that is a tiny crane. She actually has two of them, for launching the two RHIBs.

She also has a more traditional derrick, essentially a human-powered crane, which is used for loading heavy stuff and setting up the gangways.

Tenacious is far from being a traditional ship. She was launched in 2000, and is the only tall ship currently operating* that was designed specifically to be sailed by a disabled crew.

This means:

wheelchair lifts throughout the ship

decks wide enough for wheelchairs**

a talking compass, so people with visual impairments can't avoid taking their turn on the wheel!

power assisted steering and a joystick for people with limited dexterity

wheelchair clamps by the wheel, and seating for those who can't stand for long periods. (And for those who just don't want to, when there's a perfectly comfortable chair right there!)

rigging for a harness to allow people with limited mobility to get into the RHIBs

ascender systems that allow wheelchair users to take themselves up the masts. (Here's a photo of someone doing just that last week.)

On the more mundane side, there are showers with seats, handrails and adjustable showerheads. There are two or three clos-o-mat toilets, and the majority of the toilets are wheelchair-accessible. There are bunks which have anchor points for wheelchairs, and lifts to get in and out of the bunk.

More than that, however, is the ethos of the ship. There are no passengers on Tenacious. Everybody is part of the crew. Everybody stands their watch (and if I could get out of the morning watch, 4am-8am, I absolutely would). Everybody does their mess duty. Everybody takes part in happy hour (cleaning the ship - both the romantic stuff of the scrubbing the deck and the less so of scrubbing the toilets).

Everybody is assigned a buddy when they join the ship. If you're disabled, this is the person you turn to when you need a bit of extra help. (I have CFS. On my first voyage, I pushed myself so hard, because I wanted to get the absolute most out of the experience, that I ended up curled up on my bunk and sobbing because I was too tired to go and eat dinner. My buddy went and spoke to the cook and brought me a meal in my bunk.)

However, if your buddy isn't around, you can ask absolutely anybody, and they'll do it without making a big deal of it.

The Tenacious ethos is that everybody has something to offer, and everybody sometimes needs help. It doesn't matter whether you're disabled, currently able-bodied, or just completely unable to remember which bit of string to pull. You'll never be shouted at, and you'll never be made to feel a burden.

If my hard sell has worked and you want to sail on Tenacious - guess what? YOU CAN!

She's owned and operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust and you can book a voyage on their website. There are bursaries available to help with cost.

*JST used to operate two tall ships. Unfortunately, COVID and financial issues meant the STS Lord Nelson was taken out of service, and is currently sitting semi-derelict in a Welsh dock, hoping for a buyer.

**Unfortunately, she can only take manual wheelchairs. Powered chairs are largely too heavy and too bulky, and also class as a fire risk. (Batteries and a lot of water aren't generally a good combination.)

What do you have on the Lenopan side of the family?

Joel, Camille and Lucy I definitely wanted more of, so I have worked on them a bit. Joel and Camille I liked the idea of them settling in Bellwood after their wedding, as they wanted to be close to Max's side of the family since they seemed a lot more accepting of them. Plus, Bellwood is just a nice little town, and they know Max will have their back regarding the alien stuff. Because of this, Ben and Gwen get to interact with Joel and Camille quite a bit, in fact I had it that Camille ends up becoming Ben's babysitter. He had a history of not getting along with many of them, but Camille ended up being a good fit and knows how to approach him, plus she knows about the whole alien stuff so he feels he can be more open around her. Lucy ends up moving in with those two since she too wants to see more of earth, leading to her hanging out with Ben and Gwen often, spending time at their house or playing around the streets. She learns a lot about the Plumbers through Joel, and it makes her really want to join them. So she does become part of the Plumber Kids by UAF, being the spy for the team.

My friend Lucie is always supporting us but I noticed that she was acting differently when we saw this girl but she said it was straight so I am really confused . I have been wondering if I like someone else or my girlfriend Layla or anyone or if I'm trans or I don't know . I don't feel like a girl but would they support me I don't know .

I'm horrified she is going to leave me but I'm hoping she doesn't. I have always liked my hair short but i always feel like it should be shorter I don't know.

What's an alien we saw in the show that Ben didn't turn into, that you would have liked to see Ben transform into? Like background characters in Undertown, or argits species, or anything like that?

Also, what's a location in the show you wish we got to see/visit again?

Ooh, yes absolutely! My first pick has to be a Revonnahgander. Ik that overall they don't offer Ben anything special, but it still would've been neat to see it happen in the show. But I also think they could've used it early on as a way to have Ben and Rook learn more about each other. I've brought this idea up before, but them swapping species and being stuck like that could've made for a great episode (and led to him unlocking Revonnahgander DNA). Like, they're both stuck for the episode and can't do their normal thing (omnitrix is malfunctioning as a result of his genetic code not matching and Rook is finding his normal fighting style much more difficult in a human body) so they basically have to help each other learn to adapt and they come away from the experience with a better understanding of each other. Sorta something like the Switched episode from Teen Titans but for Ben and Rook.

I also would've liked to see him turn into Xylene's species. I love the design for the Uxorites, and I'd love to learn more about them or just see them again lmao. Also, I think he only has one alien with telekinesis and that's Brainstorm, who hardly appears. A Lenopan form would've been great, too! Again, I love the alien design, the powers are super cool, and tbh it should've been unlocked for Breakpoint. I think the shapeshifting powers would've been way more handy there and made for a more interesting undercover episode. Also, I'd love to see Ben pull Lucy's signature trick on her lmao. Last but not least is Anodite. I'm curious how they'd tackle the design since all Anodites we've seen all have the same look. I'm curious if male Anodites take on a generic male form or if there are even male anodites. Anyway, it would also be fun to see Gwen trying to teach him some spells to use in that form.

Friedkin University is a place I wish we got to see more of. The atmosphere of the place is so different from Undertown and Bellwood. Gives it a really unique feel. Ik we saw it 3 times, but I would've liked a couple more adventures set there.

Roughly from left to right: Yakko, Wakko, and Dot, a Nyan Cat my mom's friend made with her sewing machine, a Shy Little Kitten from my mom, an alebrije I think my dad got me, a vampire in a swimsuit (it's pretty hidden, you can only see its head), a demon plushie from a project my dad backed on Kickstarter (Lucy Bellwood’s 100 Demon Dialogues), a little orange tabby cat beanie babie, Marie from Aristocats, the thing wrapped in plastic is a little Nightmare Before Christmas themed mini top hat that was a gift, a Smilodon I got from the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, a pink alpaca that was a gift from a friend, Ash Williams Evil Dead, a blue dragon orb that my friend bought me bc it reminded her of Underling Bad End Theater, a bushbaby (hidden behind the blue dragon), two Webkins cat plushies (the tuxedo cat is named Andy and the orange tabby is named Allie), a black cat orb that I bought at the mall when I was out with friends, a sock monkey superhero from my dad and stepmom for my birthday, a leopard print scalemate that my friend @/hiddency handmade for me years ago, two different cheetah plushies under the scalemate (the more squished one on the left is named Piston, my dad came up with it when i was really little, and the one on the right more in the front is named Cheese and he's my emotional support boy), a leopard print Baphomet plush whom I lovingly call Baphy (Dark Lord plush in the color Rockabilly from Killstar, limited line), a black cat that you can BARELY see (I've had her for so long that I KNOW she has a name but I cannot remember it for the life of me), a calico cat orb, another black cat you can barely see (I stole that one from work), SkippyJon Jones, he's wearing a Disney Cheshire Cat mouse ear hat and one of those ears has a pin of the exact same hat pierced in the ear, ANOTHER cheetah plushie that was a gift from a friend, Spyro the Dragon, a sea lion plushie that you can barely see behind Spyro's horns, and a shiba inu.

Stuff that doesn't fit on the shelf includes: a life sized cheetah (who my mom named Mr. Cheetah), with a giant python on his back (I wanted to adjust it so you could see the entire thing but I saw a spider in that corner the other day so I didn't wanna touch it too much), and on my bed is a cat plushie that was a gift from a friend, it sleeps on my bed every night :)

and that's just the stuff in my bedroom.

Left to right: a yellow cat plushie that's made to be decapitated (its head is velcroed onto its body), a tiny chocolate milk carton stuffy, a little porg that my mom found on top of a trash can at Disneyland and took it home and washed it and gave it to me, and a purple borb (bird orb) that someone I don't talk to anymore made for me.

Around a "rough neighborhood"

After heading down from the park department, a guy whose supposed to look like me, alone. A guy down farther with "everything" so far as family is concerned *and yellow shoes*, who looks like phil.

There are bald guys *akin to skinheads* absolutely everywhere passing through the plaza today. The "island" downtown has some kind of team meeting going on out there representing, I think, "strength in numbers" (see rough neighborhood, above).

There's a guy who's purpose seems to be resembling eric and "his chair" going everywhere in latino messaging, at the "raj" building and implying that's *yet another snk back office project about town* in worse taste than ever. We've got the -hex red Honda fit that *used to literally follow me around* parked outside love revolution "lite" not the sex shop of the heyday drug trade.

(And you know, as an aside, porque no aunque? *All those socialist blogs about revolutionary stuff* and *no uncertainty?* Blaming America then on America now *although* we imported all the cartels, drug wars and violence, and borderline *committed* to inviting them, as *a group* to run Oregon)

*There's sooo much* there's eric and phil selling houses on signs. There are PALs in whole and part turning up absolutely everywhere.

They're even *fire dept cooper drives by* we'll she's a stalker...an back to where I was taking about, turning up in the tube source material for erotica on Tumblr.
