There's something at the tip of my tongue about the parallels between Jackie and Wilson and Who We Are
How the narrator of Jackie and Wilson wants to run away with a woman that he's carved out of his imagination based on a brief interaction. How they would try the world, but good god it wasn't for them. So they run away from it into a fantasy world where they live by their own rules.
And then comes the narrator of Who We Are, who dreamt his whole life of finding someone who would hold him like water or like a knife, only to find that running away from the world will only get them so far, since "the hardest part is who we are". And only to find out that the "phantom life" he's fantasized about is actually just that: a phantom. And its absence sharpens like a knife

Lae’zel spotted her easily, her beauty drawing all of the gith’s attention in and devouring it, even through the dark of the club.
Past an ocean of bodies writhing to the music, Shadowheart stands, not a smile on her face, glued to her phone in one hand, the other holding her drink. And Lae’zel sees her chance, pushing through the crowd to get to her, ignoring how drunken idiots step on her boots and jab her with their elbows, she can’t care in her focus on reaching the half-elf.
Who looks up through her lashes at the approaching githyanki, lips closed around the short straw dipping into her glass. Then she smiles at the recognition of a person who’s still almost a stranger, but they’ve been exchanging glances for months, a few words here and there, and today Lae’zel is taking her chance.
And the phone vanishes into a backpocket. A hand grabs a wrist. And they walk onto the dance floor together.
It is mesmerizing to get to witness, the way Shadowheart dances when her supposed boyfriend isn’t around, how freely she moves without a care, and maybe it’s thanks to the alcohol, or to Lae’zel’s presence, the gith doesn’t care, she’ll take her wins where she can.
To think that anyone wouldn’t cherish such a creature as she, leaving her for someone else to take home, Lae’zel’s jacket covering Shadowheart’s torso, a little too big, but so is it on the gith, as they walk together through the dark to Lae’zel’s apartment.
And when the door has closed behind them, the half-elf ruins her lipstick on the githyanki’s mouth, asking where the bedroom is, stripping as she walks in the direction that Lae’zel points at.

Yeah, you could say you miss all that we had, but I don't really care how bad it hurts.
