Next part of All x Fem!Aang, Male!Mai's turn follows. I wanted to draw about the "Rejection Protocols", for those who barely know me, I have the Hc (which leads to an Au), where if Aang remained single, many nobles from different countries took advantage of the fact that he had no knowledge of the customs and marriage arrangements of each nation. They tricked Aang and compromised him without his consent, resulting in him being engaged to many people and demanding that he choose.

To get out of this disaster, Aang gets his friends to advise them to carry out "rejection protocols" and be able to get rid of commitments one by one. He has to dress, use etiquette and do the customs of each nation to the person he is going to reject, his advisors for each nation are; Sokka, Toph and Mai.

That's why in this drawing, Fem!Aang wears Fire Nation clothing, hairstyle, mannerisms, and makeup while Male!Mai helps her with negotiations to reject her fiancés. I based my makeup on Akemi from "Blue Eye Samurai"

I have used this HC (or AU, I'm not sure what it is) as a plot engine in two fanfics I published. One is MaiAang and another is SokAang, I made them for a Aang RareShipps Week.

Ship Stats for Mai (Updated)

During October, I took a survey of Mai ship stats and promised I would do an update in the new year.  And after weeks of delays work, it’s finally happening. The finalized 2022 ship stats for Mai.

Methods

On January 1, 2023, I took a survey of 24 Mai ships from 01/01/2013 to 12/31/2022: the same 21 ships surveyed previously as well as two ships previously overlooked and one new ship posted after the previous survey.

Data 

This chart is for the totals of the sample surveyed. And the other is a table of the chart’s raw numbers.

This is the chart of the total Mai ship fics broken down by year. It included the top 10 ships (Maiko, MaiLee, Maizula, Maitara, MaiAang, Maikka, Maiyue, Maiki, Jet/Mai and Mai/Kei Lo), the same as in October.

And here’s the table for the both the 10 ships in the chart, as well as one showing all 24 ships in the sample

Then there’s this chart that shows the year to year output of works rather than the total. It features the same 10 ships as the previous chart.

Observations

Total sample of works by year

Before 2020, the growth of the sample never exceeded 150 works

2020 was the year where the most Mai ship works were added

As previously predicted, 2022 became the third most productive year, behind 2020 and 2021

Compared to October, over 100 Mai ship works were added. 

2022 saw the addition of two new Mai ships to AO3: Hakoda/Mai and Lu Ten/Mai

Cumulative count by year

in terms of total fic count, maiko has consistently remained the Mai ship with the most works.

MaiLee has been in second place for every year except 2016. That year, Maizula held second place.

In 2013 and 2014, Maitara held third place. In 2015, Maizula took third and in 2016 MaiLee took third place when Maizula was in second place that year. Since 2017, Maizula has held third place.

Annual output by year

Maiko has consistently not only held first place, but each year the majority of Mai ship works were Maiko.

Starting in 2020, Maiko’s majority dipped to 61%, and below 60% since then.

Maiko’s output by percentage for 2022 is the lowest it’s ever been (54%)

MaiLee’s highest output year was 2020, at 32%. This has slightly declined to 27%, but is far and above pre-2020 performance.

The Mai ships who currently have the second and third highest output of works for 2022 are MaiLee and Maizula

Despite appearances based on percentages, MaiAang and Maitara’s 2022 output are behind their 2021 output.

The Mai ships that outperformed their 2021 numbers in 2022 are: Maizula, Jet/Mai, Jin/Mai, Kei Lo/Mai, Mai/Piandao, Maikka and Mai/Toph

Other observations 

Every year, the annual output of M/F Mai works is greater than the output of  to F/F Mai works

Before 2020, the M/F Mai works to F/F Mai works output was usually 80% M/F to 20% F/F

Since 2020, the M/F Mai works to F/F Mai works ratio has hovered between 65% M/F to 35% F/F and 60% M/F to 40% F/F

38. "You fainted...straight into my arms. You know, if you wanted my attention you didn't have to go to such extremes."

"I'm fine."

"If you say so."

"I mean it, I'm fine."

"Okay."

Mai glared at Aang suspiciously through her throbbing headache. She was not sick. Sure, she had a fever and was freezing cold and couldn't take a deep breath without coughing, but she was not sick.

A troublesome flu had swept through Caldera City, leaving half of the citizens wheezing. For most people, they recovered quickly with only a few symptoms. But a few had been laid low by the disease, alternating between shivering and sweating, unable to even walk. Mai, who rarely got sick, was horrified to find herself in the second group. And so she refused to accept it.

She was perched on the edge of her bed, swaying back and forth and pretending that she didn't need a break from the simple action of sitting upright. Aang stood in front of her, patiently waiting with an insufferable grin on his face. Mustering all of her strength, she pushed herself to her feet. She realized that it was a mistake a second too late. The room was already spinning, fading from red to gray to black.

When she came to, she was back in bed. Aang was lying next to her, one arm curled protectively around her waist. He hadn't gotten sick yet, and he really should be keeping his distance. But Mai was glad to have him there. She shifted, and he woke up from his light doze.

"I thought you were fine?" he commented, cheeky as ever.

"I hate you."

"You fainted straight into my arms." He swept one hand across her damp forehead, gentle in spite of his relentless teasing. "You know, if you wanted my attention, you didn't have to go to such extremes."

"Shut up." Too exhausted to do anything else, she wriggled closer to Aang. She felt him press a tender kiss against her hair before she drifted off to sleep again.

Hello! As I'm not done with LOK yet, my ask only concerns ATLA. I'm curious about your favorite rarepairs from Aang's era. Do you have an absolute favorite, or some that catch your attention?

ATLA rarepairs, huh? Glad you asked!

Toko is my absolute favorite (I'm actually working on another oneshot for them right now).

Also, I do love me some Aang rarepairs-- IMHO, Aang is clearly the most shippable character in the show. My favorites are Yuaang, Maiaang, Azulaang, and Sukaang. (I've never been able to get into Ty Laang or Taang.)

Some of my other favorite ATLA rarepairs include JetLee, YueLa, Songru, Sokkla, and Smellershot. I'm also vaguely intrigued by numerous others, and am generally willing to try new ships.

Never really thought too much about Maiaang, but it definitely intrigues me. I need to get around to reading some.

As it happens, I do actually have a Maiaang fic idea (it's basically the song "Cecily Smith" by Will Connolly, but with Aang being Cecily and Mai the POV person)

Do you think you'll ever make another mayor mai x aang story? You've mentioned before that you have some ideas for stories of Aang x ty lee but i also seem to recall you once said you had a plan for another mai x aang story at some point.

If so, I no longer remember it. Maybe it's this speculative post I made a few years ago? I'm not really interested in season-rewrites like that, since so many of the events can otherwise adhere to the existing story.

I also had a few short stories that tease Maiaang. But I don't see myself continuing any of those.

Oh, wait, was it my almost-two-decade-old Mai-is-a-secret-Airbender-and-that's-why-her-thrown-knives-can-lift-a-grown-man-off-his-feet idea? I really like that idea and could see myself doing something with it, but I sadly don't have any ideas for an actual plot for that. Once a solid plot is available, I can be off to the races.
