#azula x aang
Text
I’ve been thinking about Azula a lot lately and I love the idea of Katara trying to connect with her while she’s imprisoned because Zuko keeps trying but he just can’t.
I also just saw fanart of AangxAzula and now I’m thinking of Aang also visiting Azula from time to time, never giving up on her becoming a better person but also dealing with his duties as Avatar so he can’t visit too often. And though maybe she’ll never admit it, she starts to look forward to them coming to visit her

There is a bitch inside me, who finds it thoroughly fascinating when unhinged women have soft husbands. Yes, like "I can't fix her so I will love her with all my heart" and "i can make him worse by loving him with all my heart". Like YES give me that comfort. They balance each other out so well.

Azula: Aang, you need to stop this. You can't keep coming in here every day and making big sad puppy dog eyes until I let you lay your head on my lap.
Aang: But-
Azula: No buts. Katara broke up with you four months ago. You have to get over her at some point.
Aang: Katara didn't break up with me, I broke up with her.
Azula: ...
Azula: Then why have you been doing this?
Aang: Umm... well...
Aang: *big sad puppy dog eyes*
Azula: ...
Azula: ...
Azula: Oh for Agni's sake, fine. *pats lap* Come over here, you big baby.

What if this happened?
Azula and Zuko manage to capture the avatar right after Katara quickly healed him while still in Ba Sing Se. The gaang were forced to leave without Aang, altering the day of black sun plan into a rescue mission.
Until the end of "Day of black sun pt 2", Aang is stuck as Azula's prisoner. As the main character, Aang would still have the most screen time but it gets shared with Azula and he spends the most time with her.
What do you think will happen between them? What could "The Beach" episode look like with Aang in it?
Well, this is an interesting ask.
The first most definite thing I can say is whether or not Azula and Zuko know that Aang is alive. I would wager they would capture his body which might not necessarily be conscious to show that the Avatar is indeed dead. Naturally, this could lead to a nightmarish scenario like at the start of Book 3 where Aang wakes up on a Fire Nation ship, only for it to be under the control of the Fire Nation instead of being captured.
Course, I wouldn't imagine Aang's initial escape attempt being too successful given that he just recovered from being shot in the back. Azula and Zuko would still be able to hold him till he gets to the Fire Nation where Ozai...I doubt Aang is going to be kept in good condition since killing him would just cause the Avatar to reincarnate. Therefore, I could see Ozai keeping him in torturous conditions not unlike what Zhao put him through in Book 1. Alive, but unable to do anything. Might even give Azula the "honor" of watching him since Zuko has returned to become the Crown Prince.
But let's assume that Aang is able to try and make an escape attempt a few times. I mean let's face it, he's not exactly someone who's easy to keep down. I could see Azula wanting to keep his escape attempts under wraps so Ozai's wrath would not directed towards her. Now here's where things get interesting. She starts noticing that Aang is avoiding killing anyone, isn't going into the Avatar State, and overall isn't acting like what the Avatar is expected to act like by the Fire Nation (which we can get some interesting worldbuilding by seeing how they view the Avatar from their perspective).
If we go down this avenue of thought, Azula might assume that putting the Avatar in torturous conditions isn't working since he keeps trying to break out. What she might feel work better is if he was broken mentally so he simply wouldn't have the will to fight. To this end, she might give him better conditions that are less torturous, but she'll try to break him by passing stories about his friends dying or being captured or something. Make it clear that he can escape, but break his will to fight. Maybe have daily "chats" taunting him.
Now here's where things get interesting: Aang won't break. He knows Azula's lying to break him...but in the process, she inadvertently starts letting him know about her upbringing by divulging what her worldview is. Maybe even starts to feel a bit sorry for her than anything. I mean he did feel bad for Zuko even when the latter was trying to kill him, so it's completely in the realm of possibility. Which in turn befuddles Azula since everything she does to break him doesn't work, and she knows he's sympathizing with her.
Which leads to the Ember Island. This could be Azula's last chance at breaking Aang, showing how pathetic he is for sympathizing with a monster and not even attempting to escape when he has a chance. It backfires since Aang knows enough that Azula is NOT a monster, and tells her this. And the reason he doesn't want to escape is because he's afraid that Ozai's going to come after her for letting him escape (which isn't out of the question since Ozai is becoming more and more frustrated with Azula's lack of progress). As badly as he wants to escape, he doesn't want anyone else to suffer on his hands. Not even Azula.
Now here you can go a few routes. For me, Aang would eventually escape once he realizes that Azula won't budge. But he times it during a time where her back is turned, like the Day of the Black Sun so there's a reason for why her security is lax. Or he comes into contact with the rest of the Gaang and he escapes during the Black Sun Invasion so as to make it look like a rescue instead of incompetence on Azula's part. Either way, I do feel that Aang would advocate for mercy on behalf for Azula or at least make sure she doesn't rot someplace after Sozin's Comet. Azula would obviously assume that Aang abandoned her like everyone else, but Aang coming back and telling her the truth would give her a bit of a mental safety net and possibly lead to the road for recovery.
All in all, this was a good ask. You can do a lot with this, either go Azulaang, worldbuild for the Fire Nation, humanize Azula to Aang, maybe cause Aang to form a rift with Zuko or Iroh due to their differing opinions on Azula. You can do something with this given the ideas I just pointed out.

So… another Azulaang fic from me? Absolutely!
I managed to stumble across this idea for a slow-burn Azulaang rivals-to-lovers fic quite a long time ago, and now I have the time and the energy to write it. I have yet to succumb to the AO3 writers’ curse! The first chapter is posted here, I have the finale written out, and part of the middle, so I have… 8? 8.5? 9 chapters left to write? Hope everyone enjoys this little Azulaang fic, and please leave a comment if you liked it!
Summary:
The New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera, and their conductors Maestra Azula and Maestro Aang, have announced that their orchestras will embark on a Gustav Mahler festival, where both orchestras and both conductors will perform many of the famous composer’s works in a two-week extravaganza. Both conductors will share their orchestras, so that Aang will cross Lincoln Plaza to conduct the Philharmonic for half of his concerts, and Azula will cross the Plaza to conduct the Met in half of her concerts. Naturally, this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see two young superstars of the classical music world in rapid succession shocks many.
The reason for the shock? These two hate each other. It is well known in the classical music world that the carefree and easygoing music director of the Met detests his dictatorial counterpart on the Philharmonic podium, and it is well known that the decisive and assertive music director of the Philharmonic deplores her sloppy counterpart in the Met Opera pit. How in the world did they agree to this?

Apparently I'm on a roll
Welcome to New Fic Day 2!
"Tethered"
Soulmates are for the fire-weak. Azula is not fire-weak and the Avatar is not her soulmate. Why should it matter now? Azula never misses. Or Azula's thoughts through the first half of Book 3 after thinking she killed Aang - who happens to be her soulmate, that she doesn't want.
Enjoy! Will work for those logged in!

An alternate scenario in the season 2 finale of ATLA:
Katara quickly uses spirit water to quickly heal Aang from Azula's lightning. Azula takes notice and separates Aang from Katara, forcing her to leave Ba Sing Se without him. Zuko and Azula have successfully captured the avatar.
Up until the day of black sun. Aang is stuck as Azula's prisoner. They spend the most time together, getting to know each other better, they form more positive interactions. She helped him ease his fear of firebending.
Aang in the Beach episode could probably look like a combination of the beach and the headband and I see it being moved up to be the 8th episode instead of 5. It's Aang and Azula who do that famous dance from the end of the headband.
The next episode will have the war meeting. He's told to be seen but not heard. He hears Azula and Ozai's plans for the comet which leads to Aang and Azula having one of those 'tearful/dramatic falling-out' cliques. Azula orders the arrangement for Aang to be transferred to the boiling rock sometime tomorrow. The plans for the day of black sun arrive, Azula foils the gaang's plans to end the war and rescue Aang. Zuko rescues Aang once again and delivers him to the gaang as his peace offering.
Though he's glad to be reunited with his friends, Aang misses Azula and hates the thought of being enemies again. Though Azula tries hiding it, she feels the same way, this'll foreshadow her eventual breakdown. At the beginning of "The Southern Raiders," as Katara catches a falling Zuko, Aang jumps off Appa, glides to a falling Azula, catches her, and brings her to safety. Without another word, he flies back on Appa and the team flies away.
Season 4 has 30 episodes. In the premiere, it's revealed that, upon reopening his last chakra, he lost every ounce of romantic interest in Katara he had left, but in exchange, he and Azula become spiritually linked/connected/bonded. Azula's redemption takes up to 18 episodes and it's framed like Dante's divine comedy trilogy but metaphorical/psychological. Zuko has the privilege of being Azula's Iroh. The 18th episode shows only Aang and Azula on screen and it's about Aang showing Azula how to open and master her own chakras, making their spirit bond even stronger but the sessions are more intimate than the ones Aang had with Pathik.
(Btw, in this scenario, Iroh is Ursa's older brother. Ozai is the true instigator of the 100-year war but is still the final enemy Team Avatar faces, the archenemy to each member of Team Avatar, is in peak physical prime condition despite his age, and can only be defeated by a fully realized master avatar. Ozai's comet arrives by the end of Fall. Season 3 ends only with the final agni kai but without the comet while everything else is moved over at the end of season 4)
