the reason luke skywalker and marty mcfly are such radical protagonists (at least to me) is that their whole thing is just radically believing in the inherent good of people and that their goodness can be nurtured with relentless compassion??? like obviously there are some, shall we say, dated sensibilities in back to the future and star wars. but the fact that one of the first things we learn about Marty and Luke is that they're besties with the town old man everyone avoids is a testament to the power of protagonists who are outcasts, not for being edgy and cynical about people, but because they refuse to be. the way both marty and luke break the cycle of their familial neglect by showing their fathers the kindness they never received.....whoo! i love them so much!
