Marion hugs Fjord constantly whenever she sees him since Jester told her that they were soulmates. He's been feeling her hugs since he was a little kid and it's just so comforting to him.

When Caleb has been working too long at the Academy, Essek will flick his own forehead so Caleb feels it. And it always works for summon him home sheepishly.

Yasha always knew that she had two soulmates. Even though she was with Zuala, she could feel Beau. But after Zuala died, when she was under Obann's control, she didn't feel anything. She thought that when Zuala died, so did her capacity to have a soulmate. And then she woke up in the temple and she felt the rain on her skin and she felt a pain in her hands that certainly wasn't hers.

I think that Molly and Yasha are also soulmates in this au, there's really no other way to explain it. So just imagine that she felt him die...

All of the M9 use their soulmate bods to summon their partners to them when they're in need. Especially Jester, which Fjord finds very endearing.

For your ascension au, how do you think Ashton would feel knowing that they've kind of become what the Hishari worked towards? That plus cannon Ashton's biggest fear being his powers essentially reaping what's been sown. Idk if this makes any sense I just had this thought half asleep and needed to ask asdfghjk

I think half of Ashton is going to wonder if it would have even worked out like this if he hadn't been part of Hishari and the mess that went down there.

Ashton pretty much knows that they're a genasi in the first place because of whatever happened in Hishari. They know that Hishari was fucking around with restoring the powers of the elemental titans. Who's to say that stupid fucking thing that cost them their childhood didn't prepare them to become this?

It's definitely fuel on the fire to figure out the details of what the fuck happened in Hishari. Try to figure out how interconnected the biggest tragedies of Ashton's life are. Or are they just coincidentally stacking on each other in absolutely wild ways?

Ashton's certainly not comfortable with the increase in power. But he doesn't exactly hate it either.

All Ashton truly wants is to keep his people, his family, safe. Raw power can do a lot to help that goal. When you can take hits and hit back even harder, it tends to discourage others from picking that fight. And if they do choose to fight, well, being a monstrous tank is still an advantage.

On the other hand, yes, Ashton still doesn't really understand their power. Not the dunamancy, and not the new baby titan stuff. And life has taught them that there's no free lunch and the bill always comes due. More power means a bigger bill, and they're terrified that the price will end up being more than their life alone can pay.

Though Essek's expertise in dunamancy and attempts at explaining it (which go better when Professor Caleb is around to translate from high wizard technical jargon to new student of magic terms) definitely helps take the edge off of Ashton's fears for the dunamancy. Here's an expert to tell him that if there's not a price now, then it's not likely to explode on him later.

And Keyleth is definitely assigning someone she trusts (Vilya? Maybe) to try and help Ashton with the elemental side of things because that's kind of what the Ashari are supposed to do: tame elemental threats. And she's not so coldhearted as to try and banish the poor kid to the Elemental Planes just for accidentally existing in his new state when all he's known as home is Exandria.

Of course, Ashton's also experienced clear evidence that the High Temples of Vasselheim are not particularly live and let live with elemental powers in Hearthdell. So that's another worry on the list: Will they come for him? Will they come after his people to get to him?

Vox Machina and the Mighty Nein are pulling strings to guard Bells Hells, but nothing lasts forever and people will do whatever fucking terrible things they want, regardless of who tries to make obstacles of themselves. Just look at fucking Ludinus Da'leth and his Ruby Vanguard.

So yeah, there's fear. But it's not that same fear of Ashton falling apart. It's a fear of the life and family they've built being destroyed.

Fanfiction Recommendations: Camp Wildemount by cashewvesh

A very cute summer camp AU where the mighty nien are the teenage camp counselors and the bells hells are the campers! So far it only has one chapter but I think it's really cute so I think it is still worth checking out even if it's never updates.

There's also some small shipping even in this first chapter and it stays very sweet about it. The only Trigger Warning (Spoilers ahead) I would put is that there's some small transphobia that's mentioned and that Trent Ikithon is mentioned in one line. After that it's all fluff really.

I’m a couple months late at this point but - Critical Role campaign 2 Stranger Things AU.

The Mighty Nein come together as a rag tag group of mostly teens in Hawkins (including Caleb who escaped from a government project a couple years back and has pyrokinetic abilities, and Veth as his adoptive parent, though she’s actually only in her early 20s and mainly acts as a team mom) and they solve weird mysteries around town, including investigating the carnival that Yasha and Molly’s foster patent helped run, and helping to clear out a monster nest on the outskirts of town. Things turn tragic however when Fjord, Jester, and Yasha are taken and trapped in the upside down, and Molly seems to be killed when the rest of the Nein attempt a rescue. Eventually with the help of Nila (a parent in town who’s also missing a kid) and Caduceus (local odd ball who’s a recent high school graduate and is revealed to have minor healing abilities), they’re able to get the kidnapped members back, but they now have to deal with the fallout and grief of Molly’s apparent death.

Over the next year the group has a bunch of different crazy things happen, including Fjord being courted by and eventually rejecting a cult, Caleb running back into the government program that he escaped from, Jester finding out that her long time childhood pen pal isn’t who she thought he was (but he still ends up being an ally and wanting to help), Yasha getting mind controlled by Obann (an entity from the upside down), Caduceus locating his missing family, Beau being mentored by school gym teacher Dairon (who actually turns out to be an undercover government agent investigating the program Caleb escaped from), Veth finding out the husband she thought was dead is actually alive and in the custody of the Russians (and she has a kid?!), and actually working with the Russians hidden in the US that kidnapped Veth’s husband, including another teenager named Essek who also has psychic abilities (and is secretly a traitor to the Russian program and has given information to the American program Caleb had been used by).

Eventually, the group is investigating Vess DeRogna, who has connections to Caleb’s past, only to discover that she’s been brutally murdered (body contorted and blood from the eyes). Digging further they discover that a few years ago Vess had been working with a teenage prodigy named Lucien, and that while it’d been an interesting initial project Lucien had eventually gotten fed up and left, only to come back one final time seeking help with something. The group thinks they’re at a dead end... and then Lucien himself shows up in Hawkins. The Mighty Nein learn very quickly that while he looks like their friend Molly (and it IS the same body and not just a twin with there being the same tattoos) it is NOT their friend, and they scramble to figure out what his deal is and if it might be another case of mind control/possession like Yasha and Obann.

Through research, encounters with Lucien, and both intentional and unintentional visits to the upside down it is revealed that at some point while Lucien was working with Vess the upside down had gotten its claws into him, both influencing him and granting him powers, and that the final visit to Vess was to try and get help to mentally project into the upside down. She provided the help but for whatever reason (whether bad blood or wanting the results for herself or something else) Vess sabotaged the process, so that when Lucien attempted it with his friends it trapped his mind in the upside down, leaving the body behind and his friends presumed him dead. The body got buried, and through whatever weird twist of fate it somehow woke up and crawled out of the grave to become Molly.

Lucien is now working to bring the upside down fully into the real world, and the Mighty Nein have to travel to the upside down in person in a last ditch effort to stop him, everyone doing all the prep they can (such as Caleb and Essek teaching each other new psychic abilities). Getting there he’s fused into this huge monstrosity in the upside down with fleshy, bony protrusions looking like wings and horns and his legs not even visible, and the fight gets extremely dicey with multiple close calls before they’re able to take him down. Caleb uses his abilities to extract the body from the upside down’s intrusions and restore it to its previous state, but no matter what he does even with a pulse it’s completely catatonic. Everyone’s devastated that they can’t seem to bring Molly back even with Lucien gone, before Caduceus quietly asks to try something. Pulling on some of the energy of the upside down and using his friends to stabilize things he pushes past the limit of his healing abilities (blowing them out in the process and turning part of his hair white) and is able to bring back consciousness to the body.

Their rescued friend isn’t ever able to completely go back to the way he was (just due to the massive trauma of what happened and Caduceus’ abilities only being able to do so much), but he does find his friends familiar and soon enough he’s able to recover and choose the new name Kingsley. The Nein are finally able to start figuring out what they actually want to do with their lives, with college and romantic entanglements and many other things fast approaching, and while it’s going to be a hell of a lot to figure out they’re at least able to do it together.

Trigger Warning: Almost Child Death during Birth

By the time the triplets are born, Sprinkle is pretty up there in years probably the only reason he's still alive is Artagan occasionally possessing him

Like, the longest-living ferret was 14 years old, they average 5-7 years

He was probably 7-8 years old when the triplets were born and kinda chilled out a bit in his older age (he still looks like a feral red rat but he's not freaking out at anyone's touch)

He mostly chills in Jester's bag or around her neck like a scarf, people think he's a pelt until he starts moving

When the triplets are born he looks at them weirdly, seeing Jester and Fjord crying over baby Pandora.

This summons Artagan who manages to channel all of her excess chaotic magic so she lives, this is why her given name, Arte, is her original name before she gave herself the "Virtue Name", Pandora

She does keep Arte as a middle name though

As the triplets grow up into toddlers, he doesn't like being picked up or played with by them

They will chase him around the house and he sprints away, causing chaos around the Lavish Chateau

He does lay down with them in their cradle, they're warm and relaxing when not awake

Also I think that that is a very interesting question and the answer is Lionett but not because of the prestige but because it's a ploy from Bren to get Beau to trust him, he's giving up part of himself and his past to become her husband and to get information out of her. And Beau just sees that as he's willing to give up his identity for a job, something that she never would have compromised on even though she hates her dad.

And it's also a challenge from Trent, Bren would never have been allowed to keep his last name. it's part of Trent further stripping away his identity and making him into a soldier and a machine.

a post-campaign 2 AU in which Verin and some other Dynasty soldiers come to arrest Essek after learning of his whereabouts, only to find him with his child. They still take him back, but Verin ends up staying behind, meeting the Mighty Nein, and eventually helping them to free Essek. i loooovvveeeddd this fic! i was itching for something long and plotty recently, and i found this, and what a delight it was!!!! i think the plot is super cool and has layers to it that i didn’t expect, and verin is a delight, and the m9 make for a great ensemble cast. i fully admit i know nothing about kids, so idk if the kid character in this is realistic, but i thought she was cute and believably childlike. the action sequences really reminded me of critrole episodes too, which is always a hard thing to do in writing but i thought this author nailed it

They reopen Yeza's alchemy shop and Veth starts to also do some tinkering and sells it there too

Veth enjoys her family time, inviting all of the Nein to weekly dinners and making sure everyone stays connected

They also visit the Blooming Grove every couple of weeks because all of the Brenatto kids love their Uncle Cad

About three years after the finale, they get pregnant at the same time as Fjord and Jester's wedding

They give birth to a baby girl too and, five years later, another baby boy

The baby girl was born one day after Essek/Caleb/Molly's kid, sparking the rivalry the two girls would have till the day they die

Veth and Beau continue their rivalry by having their kids be rivals but that backfires horribly

Mostly due to the fact that Luc and TJ are similar ages and are chill, Veth's daughter is in an active rivalry with the ShadoWidoMauk daughter, and the youngest Brenatto is dating BeauYasha's youngest

Speaking of Beau and Yasha, these two had a small wedding with just the Nein and close family

Also immediately after the trial they adopt TJ, obviously

They go traveling for a while afterwards, showing TJ the world

Afterwards, Caleb offers Beau a teaching position which she does while also helping the Cobalt Soul

Yasha stays as a stay at home mom, taking care of TJ and her many, many, house plants

It was like a decade later, while on a mission for the Cobalt Soul, Beau saw a tiefling boy hiding in the back of a crime ring she was in charge of cleaning up, only like four or five years old

Beau and Yasha wanted another kid but were having trouble finding the right one

That and combined with the fact that she saw so much of herself in this little one, she took them home

All of the kids had to volunteer time at the Cobalt Soul, like when parents make their kids volunteer at the library lol

Finally, we have Cad

Cad is just vibing for the years, being the fun, chill uncle to all of the Nein kids need

Then, one day a little before Fjord and Jester's triplets are born, they have to bury a mother who died due to health issues a month or so after child birth

It leaves the Clay family in possession of an Air Genasi baby girl

Cad felt an extremely holy energy coming off her and decided to adopt her, naming her Cirrus Clay, like the clouds

When the Nein find out about this and meet her, they all start calling him Cad Dad

It takes him ten years to get the joke, I'm not kidding

The two are extremely close, telling each other everything

One problem though: she loves water and floating in it

Due to her being a bit airheaded at times, she has nearly drowned and her dad had to save her

She is extremely close with her aunts and uncles, her aunts Clarabelle and Calliope help her dye her hair pastel colors with moss
