Heartfelt gratitude to the attendees of last night’s Lobotomy Room cinema club presentation of Butterfield 8 (1960) at Fontaine’s! Some musings based on my introduction: Butterfield 8 is the story of the doomed love affair between a Manhattan call girl and a rich married man. (Seriously – who among us can’t relate?). Sure, the film has a terrible reputation but that’s what this film club is for - reappraising “bad” movies. I’d argue Butterfield 8 is juicy, irresistible good fun. If it’s trash, Butterfield 8 is the acme of trash. Rewatching it, I was struck by the persistent strain of melancholy throughout the film. You just know it’s all going to end tragically. The opening moments of Elizabeth Taylor waking up alone, hungover and naked in bed, donning a white slip, sparking the first cigarette of the day and prowling around silently feels like something out of a European art movie. It boasts snappy, biting quotable dialogue. Considering it was made during the Hays Code, it’s a genuine attempt by a Hollywood film to tackle adult content like adultery, premarital sex, promiscuity and prostitution. (It does what it could get away with at the time). As discussed, Taylor hated the script and only took this role begrudgingly (it was her final contractual obligation with MGM, liberating her to make Cleopatra with 20th Century Fox), but you’d never guess from the raw emotion, glamour and sensuality of her performance. Butterfield 8 captures Elizabeth Taylor at her most “Elizabeth Taylor”. She deserved that Oscar, damn it! It also gloriously captures the fashions and décor of 1960: pink marble bathrooms. Powder blue telephones. Swanky cocktail lounges with red flocked wallpaper, gilt-framed mirrors and chandeliers. Bouffant hairstyles. Cocktail dresses with plunging necklines. Full-length mink coats. (Boy, does that mink coat cause a lot of trouble!). Squint your eyes, and Laurence Harvey and Dina Merrill anticipate Don and Betty Draper of Mad Men. There’s no April film club (I’ll be attending the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender) but see you again in May. Now go brush your teeth with scotch and scrawl a message on a mirror with pink frosted lipstick!

Helena Bonham Carter’s Harper’s Bazaar UK interview | February 2023
A WOMAN SCORNED Helena Bonham Carter tells Lydia Slater why her latest role, exploring the life of the 1970s soapstar Noele Gordon, feels like restorative justice Those of a certain vintage may remember the ponderous sequence of nine guitar notes that were the signal to cluster around the television for Crossroads. Set in a Midlands motel, the soap was much derided for its flimsy sets, implausible storylines and clunky dialogue; nevertheless, in the mid-Seventies, the series was attracting 15 million viewers, and battling Coronation Street for ratings supremacy. The unquestioned star of the show was Noele Gordon, known to the nation as Nolly, who played the matriarchal, auburn-haired motel owner Meg Richardson (later Mortimer). The role had been created with Gordon in mind, and she remained Crossroads’ most popular character from the show’s launch in 1964 until 1981, when she was suddenly sacked. Her defenestration, and the reasons behind it, are the premise on which Russell T Davies has based his new three-part series, Nolly. ‘One of my very first jobs in TV was a trial script for Crossroads, and I’ve wanted to write the story of behind the scenes on that show for 40 years,’ he said. ‘Russell has always been a real supporter of the underdog,’ says Helena Bonham Carter, who portrays Gordon, complete with coiffure and carefully modulated accent. ‘He thought Nolly was really badly treated, and I think he wanted to give her the send-off and the recognition she deserved.’ Bonham Carter was ‘very aware’ of the soap as a child. ‘It was part of the perma-wallpaper, and I knew all the characters.’ She was immediately drawn to the complexity of the woman in Davies’ screenplay. ‘Nolly was a highly complicated character and a mix of many things – and not an easy mix,’ she says. ‘But I love playing people who are complex.’ Gordon was a child stage star who came from a modest background. She trained at Rada and went on to work both behind and in front of the television camera, becoming Britain’s first female TV executive; she helped Ned Sherrin and Reg Watson launch ATV Midlands in 1956, and was the first woman to interview a British prime minister when Harold Macmillan appeared on her chat show. Steeped in the workings of daytime television, Gordon was unafraid to voice her opinions on how things should be done on Crossroads. ‘She was outspoken, she was herself, she was utterly authentic,’ says Bonham Carter. ‘I think, frankly, she terrified the people who ran the show. And she was punished for that. It’s not new, is it, that women aren’t allowed to have a strong voice?’ Certainly, the first episode presents the ‘Queen of the Midlands’ as a daunting figure, swanning to the studios in mink coat and Rolls-Royce, changing a new character’s accent from Brummie to RP (in the teeth of the producer’s protests), and then playing an on-screen practical joke on the same rookie performer, after she dared to cast doubt on Gordon’s assertions of the programme’s popularity. But the series also shows how Gordon was greatly loved and respected by (most of) the people she worked with – particularly the actor Tony Adams. He played the motel’s suave, moustachioed accountant, Adam Chance, and in reality not only rented a flat from Nolly but was her closest ally – for, having been jilted by her fiancé, she never married or had children. ‘The show gave her a real sense of identity, belonging and purpose,’ says Bonham Carter. ‘She said she had two lives, as Meg Mortimer and Noele Gordon. And whenever she went to a hotel or a restaurant, inevitably they would take her to inspect the kitchen… the line was very smudged.’ As a result, Gordon lost far more than just her job when Charles Denton, the incoming controller of programmes at ATV, informed her agent that ‘all good things must come to an end’, a decision that this series lays squarely at the door of misogyny and ageism. ‘I think Nolly is quite right when she says, “You wouldn’t have sacked me if I’d been a man”,’ says Bonham Carter. ‘Men are allowed to be difficult and dictatorial. It really feels like Greek tragedy – she’s cut off in her prime.’ Gordon refused to take the decision lying down and complained to the press, resulting in national headlines, and sackfuls of irate letters sent to ATV from her devoted fans, while the series shows how producers retaliated by declining to tell Gordon how she would be written out and going to the extent of staging her fake funeral. Bonham Carter herself has never joined a long-running franchise. ‘Even after just two seasons with The Crown, by the end, with the best will in the world, you’re beginning to get a bit automatic – and if you’re faintly bored, it’s time to move on.’ Fortunately, at 56, her own career is as busy and diverse as ever. ‘We might have less collagen, but we’re much more interesting when we’re over 50,’ she says, with a laugh. ‘Life makes you more interesting, you’ve got more depth, the map of the soul is so much bigger if you’ve survived.’ Sadly, Gordon did not. She died of cancer in 1985, just four years after her sacking, while Crossroads itself only limped on until 1988. This charming series, and Bonham Carter’s portrayal, are a worthy tribute to a national treasure, and an overdue acknowledgment of the unjust treatment meted out to her.

Our schedule has no room for intros, languid and rubato...
Accelerate right to the verse and play it molto presto and staccato!
Now let's get the small-talk out of the way
What zigzag roads and fickle fates have led you to my chocolate gates?
I'm sure the stories would enthrall
But time is racing by us all
I'd love to rhyme a riddle or two
But there's so much time
So little to do!
So much time, so little to do?
Please strike that, reverse it!
I meant the other way!
It doesn't take a Sigmund Freud
To see I'm charmed and overjoyed
But pardon if I start to fret
We've not begun our journey yet!
No time to borrow or delay
What's here tomorrow's gone today!
What's here tomorrow's gone today?
Whoops strike that, reverse it!
My tongue has feet of clay!
You've bid the tasteless world adieu
To chew the goo awaiting you
But scurry, for the Wonka clock keeps ticking!
Inside these doors the floors are sweet
There's rugs and carpets you can eat
And best of all, the wallpaper needs licking!
This day of punctuality is scheduled
To the Nth degree,
I wish that there was time to share
My thoughts on makeup, clothes, and hair
Madam!
Yes?
Your hair, your dress, your shoes are great!
You're dressed for 1958
I tried those little short shorts, but they kept riding up.
No, strike that, reverse it!
Let's get on with our day!
Gloops!
Willkommen, Frau Gloop, delighted to meet you. And this must be little Augustus!
Hallo!
He's my tiny little pickle!
Pleased to meet you, Augustus, but I'm afraid I must confiscate your sausage
Oh, but that's my lunch!
You may go first but lose the wurst!
That's sad because I love 'em
To lead our group, Augustus Gloop, for who could lose sight of him?
Yes who could lose sight of him!
Salts!
Zdravstvujte, Oleg Salt from Novosibirsk. I run Salt Peanuts, Salt Cod, and Salt Mines
That's a lotta salt. You should watch your blood pressure
And this is my wonderful daughter
Dyspepsia...
Veruca.
Angina...
Veruca
Diarrhea...
Veruca!
Oh, I'm terribly sorry, I was just checking your father's medical records. Oleg, entrenu, you really must take care of yourself
I'll take care of you, Wonka, if you don't focus on me!
It's a pleasure, dear, to have you here
Where did you get that mink?
Are you for real?
It's baby seal that's clubbed then tickled pink
It's clubbed then tickled
Clubbed then tickled
Clubbed then tickled pink!
Beauregardes!
Eugene Beauregarde! Here's my card
I'll cherish it!
Smile!
Instagram it, daddy!
And I guess you already know the Queen of Pop!
Delighted to meet you, your majesty. What is it exactly that you do?
Do? I chew!
Gesundheit
The same piece of gum for the last three years!
It's a jaw-popping world record! Why, she's got over 50, 000 Twitter followers, her own YouTube channel, and one day, we gon' open up a bubble-gum boutique in Beverly Hills!
Well, congratulations. I must drop by. But you can't bring gum in here
Why not?
Because, it's disgusting
Just let me in, I'm here to win!
You like to beat your drum!
Your confidence is quite intense
But just don't jump the gum!
Don't jump
Don't jump
Just don't jump the gum!
Next!
Hey doofus, d'you have WiFi?
I'll take that!
Ethel Teavee, and this is Mike Teavee, we should be on the list
Ah, yes, Mike Teavee. The boy who hacked into my computers
So, Mike the brain, you must explain
Just how you hacked the ticket?
Shut up, old man!
I'm not a fan!
You know where you can stick it!
You can stick it!
And there's no alcohol in my factory, I'm afraid
It's lemonade
Mmhm
WOAH NELLY!
Homemade
You should visit my factory sometime
It seems that I've left someone out
Who else is here, now give a shout!
Uh, Mr. Wonka, I'm the last
Is least the last to join our cast?
Name?
Joe Bucket, at your service!
Delighted!
Actually-
Enraptured
Matter of fact-
Fascinating! And you must be Charlie
Well, well, well. Charlie Bucket. The boy who waited to the very last moment to get his ticket. Don't leave it so late next time!
But, I-
Now, Messieurs Bucket, Salt, and Beauregarde, Madame Teavee and Schatzi Gloop
You're visitors in my backyard while shepherding this tiny troupe
And so I look to you to lead your future generations
I must insist you hear and heed my rules and regulations!
I'd love to lounge and lolly gag
And give each tongue the chance to wag
But I must get you all to sign this contract on the dotted line
There's no reprise, the way time flies to dot the T's and cross the I's!
Damn, strike that, reverse it!
Please ink without delay!
May I see the dossier
And negotiate her pay?
Sir what does this contract say?
Well...
The undersigned herein to forsight for
No frippery or force majeure
No property be touched or chewed or peddled!
What'd he say?
De facto habeas corpus laws
For you a new grandfather's clause
Sign here, and here, and here, thank god that's settled!
I'm confused!
What does he expect?
This tempo is preposterous!
Just sign!
So now the time has come at last
To put the present in the past
It's time to take the golden tour
And taste the tempting treats du jour
The day is young the sun is high and so it's time to say goodbye!
Goodbye!?
No, strike that, reverse it!
And next time I'll rehearse it
Get ready, set, on your marks, let's go!
You're stupid!
You stink!
I'm winning!
You think!
Let's go!
On with the show!

Character Intro: Pandia (Kingdom of Ichor)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Age- 13 (immortal)
Location- Elis, Olympius
Personality- Much like her divine symbol, she's quite strategic in making sure certain things remain obscured in darkness. Responsibility comes naturally to her with being the oldest while being cautious, conscientious, & reliable.
She has the standard abilities of a goddess except shapeshifting. Her other powers/abilities include tidal wave manipulation, umbrakinesis, teleportation (herself & others through natural/"created" moonlight, limited gravitokinesis (gravity manipulation), being able to manipulate moonrock, temporarily being able to cast an illusion of a full moon (lasting five minutes), and menekinesis (the ability to absorb, redirect, & manipulate moonlight and lunar energy). She's significantly weaker during the day & during lunar eclipses. She's at her most powerful during a full moon.
Pandia is the eldest daughter of her parents Selene (Titaness of the moon) & Endymion, an Elian mortal man. Her and her 24 other younger siblings live in the state of Elis. Her bedroom is on the first floor down the hall from her parents. The bedroom has a celestial theme with most of the walls being covered in starry wallpaper. The ceiling has various constellations painted on it with glow in the dark paint which glows silver. There's many string lights strewn about & there's baby monitors on top of her vanity dresser so she can keep an eye on her youngest siblings (that are babies and small toddlers). The flooring is silver mink carpeting.
She's a proud night owl, only catching a few hours of sleep before the morning officially starts. Even though her mom has employed maids, nannies, & night nurses, Pandia likes to sometimes use the time to clean and straighten things around the house. She'll also catch up on homework, watch TV, read, enjoy a late night night swim, or tend to the immortal silver horses that used to pull her mother's majestic chariot. Their names are Lunae & Celeste. If she notices one of her baby sisters fusing on the monitors, Pandia is quick with a wet cloth, warm bottle, or diaper. She'll rock them to sleep while singing soft lullabies.
A go-to drink for her is lavender lotus tea that she brews herself, a cup every morning & night. She also likes blueberry cola, iced tea, and a cup of warm evaporated milk seasoned with cinnamon (that her mom makes). A usual for her from The Roasted Bean is a large blueberry açaí splash. She also likes the cookies n' cream milkshake from The Frozen Spoon.
She sets up several alarms in her room to make sure she gets up in the mornings. Pandia enjoys sleeping in during the weekends well into the late hours of the afternoon most of the time.
Pandia feels like as the oldest, she has a special relationship with her parents. She's happy every time her father has enough energy to push through the lethargic aftereffects of the curse that used to plague him all those years ago. It's as if he becomes a different person- engaged and involved in his daughters' lives. He helps out with their homework, cook, bake, & spend family time at the observatory which is located at the highest level of the mansion. Most of the time when he doesn't have the energy to do much of anything, Pandia will check on him in his bedroom to make sure he has plenty of blankets & a fresh cup of tea or water. She'll sometimes climb into bed to join him watching trashy soap operas. With her mom, Pandia feels like she's often the "other parent" helping Selene with lunches, laundry, homework, and school drop-offs. She can't remember the last time she had one-on-one time with her mom. Pandia does look forward to when she and a few of her other sisters will do embroidery with Selene. Pandia has even designed her own saree (that she'll wear to her aunt's upcoming wedding)- dark blue & shimmery silver silk and satin with swirling patterns of embroidered stars & moons.
Her favorite snack is chocolate pudding. She'll often put crushed chocolate sandwich cookies (that has a creamy white filling) on top!
She always wears a simple gold ring with a moonstone gem at the center on her left pointer finger. Pandia bought it herself with her allowance money online, the brand being Stella Ferrea. Another piece of jewelry she always wears is a necklace that has a full moon charm that was given to her by her mother when Pandia was a baby. It was crafted from Astrean Silver!
She loves the small patsas soup along with a blueberry cucumber salad (topped with feta cheese & toasted pecans; drizzled in teriyaki dressing) from The Bread Box.
Pandia sees herself as the protector of her younger sisters. She may be a little uncompromising & bossy when it comes to her leadership role, but it comes from a place of love. Lately her and some of the older siblings have been having fun choreographing a kathak dance that they're gonna perform after her aunt's wedding at the reception. Pandia loves all her sisters, but finds herself closer at times to Achelois (goddess of the moon & comfort), Cressida (Cress) (goddess of the crescent moon), Esmeray (Esme) (goddess of the half moon), and Mona (goddess of the new moon).
Two of her favorite desserts are her father's baklava and the cookies n' cream rolls from Hollyhock's Bakery.
She's currently on break from school. When it resumes, Pandia will be an eighth grader. At school, she's not exactly antisocial, but she prefers to keep to herself. She speaks to a variety of students & she knows of the godly kids in her grade like Anaideia (goddess of ruthlessness, shamelessness, & unforgiveness), Epidotes (god of purity), Telete (goddess of prayers), Thespios (god of acting), and Calocagathia (Aggie) (goddess of nobility & goodness), but Pandia surprisingly doesn't mind the company of Pompe (goddess of rites), especially since she was a BIG help to her when they were partnered up for a project for their religious studies class or Dysis (goddess of the sunset). Outside of school, Pandia's been getting to know Sereia, a mermaid that lives in the Underwater realm as part of the school's student mail messaging program. They e-mail & video chat twice a week while they also keep in touch through text messaging. Pandia may or may not have a growing crush on her. Recently, Sereia invited her for a week long vacation to the Underwater realm in time for the Blue Moon Festival, but Pandia hasn't asked her mom's permission yet.
Eclipse, Pale Blue, M9, and O are her favorite music artists to listen to. Eclipse's album Insomniac is a frequent repeat.
Her relationship with the rest of her family is fairly good. Pandia has hung out with her cousin Circe (goddess of sorcery) a few times and she has also visited Thrinacia to help tend to her Uncle Helios' farm of immortal oxen & horses to hang out with her other cousins Lampetia and Phaethusa. Even though she adores her "Titi", Pandia feels uneasy about how she really feels about her father when Pandia overheard a conversation her grandparents were having where Theia refered to Endymion as a "hapless bum."
Her TV guilty pleasures are the late night talk show The Godly Hour hosted by Pheme (goddess of fame) & true crime programs hosted by Kakia (goddess of vice & moral wrongdoing).
In the pantheon she obviously dislikes Zeus. Pandia likes and admires Artemis (goddess of the hunt & moon), Nyx (goddess of the night), Hecate (goddess of magic & witchcraft), Urania (muse of astronomy); is a dedicated member of her stargazing club, The Pleiades, Neféloma (goddess of space & dark matter), and the "Silver Titaness", Phoebe (is a HUGE fan of her mystery novels).
Her grandfather Hyperion bought her the spherical celestial themed jeweled clutch from Diamond Ave. for Pandia's 13th birthday a few weeks ago, which was a festive occassion in Rhodes, complete with a fireworks show!
Her favorite thing to get from Olympic Chef are the BLT loaded fries (covered in a garlic mayo aioli and spicy barbeque sauce).
In her free time Pandia enjoys napping, reading, basketball, watching TV, archery, football (soccer), embroidery, listening to music, stargazing, indoor ice skating, charting constellations, knitting, sewing, and painting.
Her all time favorite meal is her father's skordostoumbi.
"Everyone's a moon. There's a dark side which is always hidden."

Top five Curepuz cards based on pictures alone, not abilities
ok, we all know I’m gonna rave for hours about the dress up collection now.
5. Honoka’s white chocolate dress. Her hairstyle looks like it took ages, that’s impressive! There’s also the roses- I counted 17 visible ones, and since that didn’t include her other earring or the back of the dress or anything under the overskirt, she has over TWENTY total roses on her dress! To say nothing of the huge ribbon things on her skirt that make her look like Belle, except Belle’s outfit isn’t nearly as fabulous as this. Honoka’s got golden pearls and the top layer of her skirt reminds me of part of the Sophie Era Evergirl Uniform from the Ever Never Handbook. Not to mention the skirt trim and the part over the cream roses, which looks like frosting and chocolate drizzle and manages to make it look good. You can really tell that Nagisa and Honoka’s 5-stars are meant to be dark chocolate and white chocolate. Look at the parallels with their dresses, too: the identical roses and flowers, the golden pearls, the black lace wrap thing, the web-like piece, the light fabric with the X pattern. And don’t forget the backdrop Honoka has. The fountain, the colourful fairy lights, the starry night sky. All those lights remind me of the Aurora Winter Festival that I go to each year. And the fountain is definitely magical in some way.
4. Hibiki’s piano key dress. Those gloves! The ribbons on her shoes, and the little note clips! The sash with the white edge that looks not quite pearls, not quite ruffles, and with the massive bow at the back with the lace edge and musical note print! An example of how to do prints and patterns right. Same with the hair bows and that skirt, with all the ruffles and lace. Speaking of ruffles, that is one of my favourite sleeve styles out there. And the treble clef earrings, whoa! But the best part is probably the freaking PIANO KEY pattern on her skirt in a dozen shades of pink. What better way to communicate “musical princess”? Don’t forget the background: the rainbow notes in the air, the flowers, the sunny sky and the lake, the CASTLE!! Is she a pop star or a princess? She’s both. She looks like the princess of a magical kingdom, a princess who’s renowned for her singing off the balcony until she wound up putting on shows at royalty events. And what better way to show it off than a dress that combines the best parts of pop star outfits and princess outfits?
3. Miyuki’s flower fairy dress. There’s just something so magical about seeing a girl sitting in a giant flower, surrounded by butterflies and sunshine. (eat your heart out, Cure Felice.) Miyuki looks just like a fairy even without the flowers and storybook, what with the skirt and off-the-shoulder sleeves all made of dozens of flower petals, the huge butterfly over the little flower-shaped gem on her dress, the matching flower belt and necklace and hair accessories, OH GOD THOSE HAIR ACCESSORIES. Several kinds of flowers, accented with golden ribbons that match the gold pearls in the flowers. Not to mention that she’s LITERALLY GLOWING! Look closely at the 5-star, she’s surrounded by glow! It’s like she took the best parts of Blossom, Felice, and Dream, combined them, and dialed them up so much that those 3 look weak. All hail the queen of the fairies!
2. Miki’s sea goddess outfit. I can feel the beach air, smell the saltwater, and hear the sound of crashing waves just by looking at her. The way her dress and hair blow in the wind! The lace skirt! The top part that looks like a massive seashell! The golden pearl sleeves and necklace, that pearl belt with the sea star! Don’t forget the back bow that makes her look as if Princess Serenity turned into a siren enchantress. And her HAIR! The pearls, roses, stars, braids, I can’t handle how gorgeous she is, I’d compare her to a mermaid but no mermaid could ever match up. Miki is the goddess of the oceans, the enchantress queen who has arisen from the water for a stroll across the beach. And she’s got me under her spell.
1. Yukari’s princess attire. LOOK AT HOW BEAUTIFUL SHE IS!!!!! The roses, the pearls, the ruffles and flounces, the flower petals sprinkled on her skirt, the lace! It’s so perfect for her, and it goes amazingly well with Akira’s prince outfit! Not to mention that she’s in an enchanted forest with a palace! This is hands-down the best background for any card in the game. The dozens of glowing floating stars, the white trees that look like they’re made of frosted crystal, the night sky with hundreds of stars, the glowing white palace that looks right out of a Disney princess movie... And, oh yeah, Yukari is also LITERALLY GLOWING. Just like Miyuki, only even more noticeable, she’s surrounded by the heavenly glow of magic. She is the truest legacy princess. I’m just picturing Yukari and Akira in their 5-stars dancing the night away while floating on a trail of glowing stars over the enchanted forest, singing a romantic duet as they get sprinkled with stardust and all the animals of the forest turn to look at the sight.
Honourable mention goes to:
-Akane’s 5-star for its rainbow-and-flower backdrop, the fact that it’s basically made of ruffles, and AKANE WITH HER HAIR DOWN AKANE WITH HER HAIR DOWN
-Setsuna’s black-and-red gothic lace dress, where she’s lounging on the fancy chaise among hundreds of red roses, complete with plush carpet and fancy wallpaper. Also, look closely at her shoes- the red bottoms. Setsuna is wearing Louboutins! Holy crap, where did she manage to get the money to afford that?
-Kurumi’s dress with the roses and the FUR WRAP. The dress is amazing, especially with the mink, but it’s the backdrop that’s the best part. Girl in a princess gown at night standing on a fancy gazebo surrounded by blue roses, string lights, and flower petals! And how the entire town is her backdrop, with the snow on roofs and warm gold glow from inside the houses. It’s just so pretty...
-Aoi’s concert outfit because it’s just so cool. Seeing any precure in a lot of black and working it is pretty cool, but it’s made even cooler with the gold lame and the stars. But the best part is that layered part at the back that looks like a starry night sky. She is the galaxy! Also, the FISHNETS. THE FREAKING FISHNETS
-Yuri’s 5-star because it inspired a fanfic. Rare is the dress that inspires people to write stories.
-any dress up collection outfit that includes a tiara. As if these outfits don’t scream “PRINCESS” enough already.

Chapter 6-ish. Previous Installment found here, summary page found here. Approx. 1450 words. As always, feel free to send Asks or Messages about what’s written or anything you’re curious about.
It was just as fine as the rest of the train, if not finer. Baroque-eque wallpaper decorated the walls with a soft blue, while lace curtains matched the lace table runner. Lovely summer blooms sat in the centerpiece, no doubt being kept alive by magic. And while Clare and the woman beside him seemed to fit right in, it was all too clear that the Russian witches didn’t fit in at all, in their issued black coats and hats among all the delicate color and life.
A total of five other Russians sat around the table, though she only recognised three of them -- two young men and a woman around Zorya’s age that had been at the Small Council hall with her for the exam. The other two wore copper brooches with two crescent moons joined at the apex, marking them as Petrograd Lesser Witches.
All eyes turned on her as she entered, and Zorya was acutely aware that she was the only witch here without a familiar. Clare smiled his beatific smile and stood to welcome her.
“So glad to see you did manage to join us,” he said, without apparent irony, and gestured to the empty seat on his left. “Everyone, please meet my personal apprentice, a particularly clever Greater Witch, who I had the great pleasure and fortune to see at work before the examinations.”
“A Greater Witch?” the young woman asked. She sat at the far end of the table, fair and elegant, nearly colorless, with pale blue eyes and long silvery hair that seemed to float about her in an ever present wind. Her barn owl, elegant and regal as the woman herself, looked on at the scene with an unnatural intelligence. She still wore the brooch of a Lesser Moscow witch, but already her demeanor seemed far too refined for a Russian worker. “She’s not even a magician?”
Clare hummed pleasantly as he pulled Zorya’s seat out for her. “I’m afraid I did bend the rules a bit. One of the perks of the job, of course.”
The young woman turned her pale eyes on Zorya, and it felt like ice
Zorya wasn’t even near the table yet. She awkwardly lowered herself into it, unsure of how to respond.
Clare sat at the head of the table, his attendant to the right. She was a handsome woman, dark-skinned and dark-haired, with a trilling canary perched on her shoulder. She wore a midnight blue dress, but no brooch. Zorya didn’t know what to make of her.
To her right, sat a young man Zorya recognised as the cleaning witch from the first day of the exam. He was tall and lanky, hunched over and nervously smiling, as if he was afraid of everyone around him and his own height. His familiar, a raven, perched on the seat back behind him, preening the young man’s dust-colored hair, but otherwise well behaved.
Besides the empty chair was a Petrograd witch, tanned and burly, but apparently refined in his manners despite the obvious signs of magic rot. He was a shiftwitch, unable to keep his original shape any longer, instead sprouting black feathers in his hair and around his jawline, and his nose seemed to be growing into a beak-like point. A white cat with a wide, flat face draped itself around his shoulders like fine mink fur, and snored even while awake.
The other Petrogradi looked far too young to be here, baby-faced and mischievous, with an equally suspicious ferret on their shoulder. Their hair had been cut short, and it wasn’t easy to tell their gender, though Zorya hoped they were older than they appeared to be. They shared a passing resemblance to the large man. Siblings, then, or maybe cousins.
The other male Moscow witch, however, looked just as unhappy to be here as Zorya. He had calloused hands and scars on his face that she recognised as having come from shrapnel and buckshot. He held himself like a laborer, and his familiar was a working dog as well. She liked him instantly.
[Clare starts talking to sabine in french and gets really into it and kind of forgets the russians]
An awkward silence hung over the younger witches, none of whom knew enough French to follow along. So they looked over their meal -- ham, eggs, sweet bread, and steaming coffee. Grander than anything any of them had eaten for years now. And this was only breakfast.
After a long moment, the young woman picked up her fork and stabbed at her ham to inspect it. “I suppose you ought to introduce yourself first,” she said, jabbing her pointed nose at Zorya. “Seeing as you were hand picked to be here.”
Zorya said nothing, holding the woman’s piercing gaze with her own, ears burning.
“Well? You do have a name, don’t you?” The woman put her fork down, and rested her chin delicately on her hand. There was a spark of amusement in her eyes. She was teasing Zorya, mocking her for her position. As if Zorya wanted to be here at all.
“Zorya Kosheka,” she answered. “And you?”
“Vittorina Vasiliyevna, and my dear Jaga,” came the smooth reply, as if her name itself was something to be grateful for knowing. “One of the most powerful magicians in Russia, so said the examiner.”
“If they’re to be believed,” the feathered Petrogradi witch countered, then stopped to introduce himself before continuing: “Dima Kalashnik, Good morning. My examiner didn’t think I was even a proper witch because he didn’t have anything in there I could work with safely. I had to melt something in front of him before he believed me.”
“Melt?” Vittorina echoed.
The younger witch piped up, mouth full of egg, “Dima is a mechanic. His real name is Dmitry, and he uses his magic to wield things together. Da says it’s a miracle he hasn’t lost use of his hands yet.
Dima turned a glare their way. “Nika, meanwhile, is useless, and spends their days causing trouble for me instead of doing their job.”
Nika pouted. “My job is to count the money at the end of the day. I don’t have anything to do until then.”
“You’re also supposed help Papa with the finances, and help the other families in our house with anything they need.
“But they never need me. They always send me away. I only burned Miss Surya’s soup one time.”
“And then we didn’t eat for three--”
Vittorina cleared her throat. She looked, just for a moment, paler than before, but any curiosity or concern Zorya might have had for her faded the instant she began to speak. “Not to interrupt this lovely family discussion, but you aren’t the only two at the table. We haven’t gotten anyone else’s names. You, sir?”
She gestured to the large Moscow witch, who grunted and shrugged. “Yuri Oblinsky. That’s Krolika.” The dog looked up from her spot, big ears swivelling forward. It wasn’t hard to see where she got her name. Zorya liked hima ll the more for it.
“How darling,” Vittorina said, with a smile that said she didn’t find it darling at all. “And you, my dear?” She turned her attention to the cleaning witch, who seemed to grow all the more nervous at the reminder that he was not, in fact, invisible.
Zorya could relate all too well. She felt bad for him, doubly so as he stammered out his name. “A-Alexei Malkin, ma’am. A-and my raven, Boris. It’s, uh -- good to meet you all?” He looked about for a moment, and then back down at his plate.”
“Well, it’s good to meet me, at least,” Nika insisted, puffing out their chest. “Dima’s miserable to be around until he gets his afternoon snake.”
Dima ran a hand down his face. “It’s still morning, Nika. We’re eating breakfast.”
“And you’re going to be cranky until three. Right, Dimyashenchka?” They cooed his name like a mother talking to their toddler. “Oh -- that’s right. Excuse me, Grand Magician?”
Clare looked up from his conversation, fook in hand but food hardly touched. “Yes? Oh, you’re one of the siblings from Petrograd. Kalashnik, isn’t that right? Or is it Kalashnika in your case?”
If Nika heard Clare’s question, they didn’t acknowledge it. “How many meals are we allotted per day? Will there be an afternoon snack?”
“Allotted? Oh, no, no.” Clare shook his head, and waved a hand at the table, summoning more food from the kitchen. “You’re not limited to anything at all. Help yourself to as many meals as you like, though I do like company when I take my coffee in the afternoons if you’ll join me.”
Nika beamed at Dima. “I’ve decided I fucking love the French.”
