We talked and walked through Kevin’s childhood, early days of steel drums, french horn, to guitar… architecture, bands, playing parties, selling flowers, Papa John Creach, sessions, his first deal and album as Kevin Moore at 41, to two years later being nominated for a Grammy as Keb’ Mo’… four more Grammy victories, currently awaiting his night at The Staples Center… do I hear six?

We talked about his songwriting––lots of honesty, humility, self-knowing… where his philanthropy and activism began, a ready-to-go draft dodger, his one ask - to meet Taj Mahal, and boy, did he meet him. Working with Darius Rucker and his awe for Hootie & The Blowfish, telling their truth. Kevin sharing that he likes to be uncomfortable with his lyrics-brilliance that is his. We talked his spiritual path, and if he prays- “everything out of my mouth is a prayer.” Wow. He gracefully credits Depak.

I smiled so big and so much for so long… for the entire 1:35:29 broadcast, my face hurts. In the good way. The very best way. I loved this. I love Keb’ Mo’. I reckon I’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t.

No one gets to rag on me for being this happy and excited and positively joyful about Gerard Way experimenting with gender presentation in 2022. No one. I am only out to like 3 people in the real world, and I was thinking about the cheer uniform where I wore my binder outside and around people I know for the first time. At a church.

Public queer existence makes a difference to queer people. Representation matters, sure. That's partially what this is. I think a lot of people think of "representation matters" as being tv shows or books or whatever. That matters too. But nothing has meant more or done more for me than witnessing queer joy. My aunts being married. My friend painting on their mustache. My professor happily adding rainbow bunting to her desk in June for all her students to see. Yes, Gerard Way in well tailored nurse outfit. These all mean more to me than any character ever could. These all make me feel stronger.

Visibility is resistance. Visibility is vulnerability. Visibility is the biggest "fuck you" we can give to every queerphobic piece of bill and law. Queer joy is liberation in itself.

Yes, really, this is how deep this is to me, and I know I'm not the only one.

Keb’ began performing with Papa John Creach, and has collaborated with Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Lyle Lovett, James Taylor, Vince Gill, and Darius Rucker, to name but some. BB King & Zak Brown have recorded his music, he’s composed for TV, appeared on screens big and small as himself and as Robert Johnson.

I adore everything Keb, and so look forward to diggin’ in and getting to know this brilliantly talented artist, philanthropist, and soulful family man.
