Seeing the difference in coverage (news media vs social media) on the Feb 3rd train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, USA on and all the issues caused by the incident, I want to see something;
The incident summed up (and there may be even more I missed):
train carrying 150 cars, twenty of which contained hazardous materials, derailed due a failure of a wheel bearing, due to poor inspection because inspections were cut from 3 minutes per train to 90 secs per train. (Remember the railroad strike? Yeah. Part of what they wanted, in addition to better conditions, was more time to inspect trains and to get faulty parts fixed. They were refused, and now we're here.)
the derailment (of 50 cars) caused a fire which threatened to make a car(s) with the vinyl chloride explode, so a controlled release (burn) of the vinyl chloride (toxic, flammable gas) was done to prevent this
residents within a 1 mile radius were evacuated beforehand
the event resulted in contamination of the air/water and mass deaths of animals like fish and chickens
residents were told it's safe to return home a week after the evacuation, and found their pets dead; water smells wrong; air smells and/or burns their eyes
People miles away are having the same issues with animals dying (schools of dead fish in water, livestock sick/dying) and water contamination
The chemicals are contaminating the Ohio River Basin (which is more than just the Ohio River, and effects/includes KY, WV, TN, IN, OH, and parts of IL, PA, VA, and NC) and could potentially also lead to the whole Mississippi River Watershed being contaminated. (that's like, 40% of the continental United States and starts to touch into Canada.)

Many think the Railroad company (and the government, because they sided with the railroad company in ending the strike) are trying to cover this up in the news as much as possible, and that most coverage is coming from social media (specifically TikTok) and I want to see just how true that is.
I'm not not kidding when I say I have people IRL, who do keep up with the news, who never heard about the derailment at all until I told them just a couple days ago. It doesn't look good.

Ok ok ok I have the strangest hc
So the last name Macher is German, right? Well I saw somewhere that somebody said that Stu's dad is from the South, and North Carolina (where I live) has a large population of people with German backgrounds. I mean we have some insane last names here.
I don't think his mom would be from NC, they probably met in California. And California was a popular place to move to in the 80/90's, if you had the money of course.
I think this would also explain the whole"Stu is home alone all the time" thing too. It's very common down here to just leave your kids to fend for themselves, that might just be a southern thing though.
Yeah yeah! Me and @scream--1996 had an hc about Stu’s dad being southern, this is very much how we were thinking about it.

Ok so ok the advent of the 60th I had an absolute crazy idea on how to do a 60th Anniversary series of Doctor Who while Flux was still airing. And it involves Paul McGann.
In my mind, Flux ends with Tecteun winning. She didn’t die. The Flux, The Ravagers, Division, its all been a manipulation by Tecteun to usurp all of Time Lord society, to no longer be The Other. Rassilon is dead and Omega’s anti-matter universe collapsed during The Time War. She has a race bank of Gallifreyans and is going to the new universe, relatively young, to dominate and rule. 13 is trapped, beginning to regenrate. Yaz and Dan are far away in a seprate cell. The Flux and The Ravagers consume the last of the universe, and The Doctor has lost….END CREDITS
NEXT TIME: The trailer is 4:3. The picture is softer, the music isn’t surround sound and not as grandiose. Paul McGann and New Companion (NC) step out of the TARDIS onto a new world, and the effects look decidedly 90s. Season 27 would begin airing in 2022.
What follows would be a series of NuWho length episodes that would begin as a sort of “What if Paul McGann series on BBC in the late 90s.” As the episodes go on we see more and more…paradoxes. Dhwan!Master keeps showing up, not attacking but not helping, trying to get 8’s attention. Moments flash and the picture goes back to HD. Skull-like objects in the background of various episodes seems to follow the camera with their eye sockets. In the final episode of the “Season,” reality breaks down. 8 starts seeing the camera, the production staff, the sets, the lighting. Staff call him Paul. The TARDIS is just a prop. He runs for the stage door…waking up elsewhere on Tecteun’s massive universe ship (the ship would be a lot bigger in my version), and Dhwan!Master is standing over him, alongside the Fugitive Doctor…and Richard E. Grant as the Shalka Doctor.
NC was just the Master trying to bring 8 out of the end of the universe and space and time. He stowed away and realized that Tecteun’s success would mean his and the Doctor’s ultimate demise. Him, 8, Fugitive, and Shalka team up as paradox energy threatens to tear the ship apart. Shalka and 13 can’t exist together, but he’s here, because the universe is collapsing in on itself. Derek Jacobi is also here as Shalka Master. 13 is caught in a looping regeneration. Not allowed to die but not able to be reborn. Fugitive goes to free her. Shalla Doctor goes after Yaz and Dan, 8 and the Masters storm the bridge.
Tecteun wanted to rule and wanted to eliminate her biggest enemies and regrets, as well as an opponent who would be detrimental to Time Lord survival. The Master is the real Timless Child, the Doctor as the TC was a ruse by Tecteun to motivate him to kill the Time Lords for her. The Doctor was the first successful TL who she was able to grant regeneration to. She had hoped to use them but both grew beyond her. Dhwan!Master is enraged and broken. Shalka Doctor returns with Yaz and Dan. Fugitive rescues 13 but is hurt in the process. 13 is dying but still slowly. Big fight. Fugitive and 13 turn the ship around and navigate the paradox energy storm. Shalka Doc, realizing that he can’t exist, alongside Shalka Master, scarifice themselves and their TARDIS to do a “restore from backup” on the universe. Fugitive disables Tecteun and then goes off to regenerate into 3. 8 pilots the ship into the protection of Gallifreyan space with the Master’s hell…before waking up in his TARDIS with no memory of the events…same as usual.
13 wakes up in Gallifreyan hospital. Romana is standing over her. The actions of her and her other selves have averted destruction. Tecteun has been tried and will be executed. The universe is put back to roughly pre-Flux state, but the enemies of the Doctor are fewer in number, Romana is president again. 13 will have enough time to send Dan and Yaz off and say goodbye, and the TARDIS has been given an overdue tune up. 13 says goodbye to Dan, then Yaz. Then regenerates.
Back on Gallifrey, the people are celebrating a festival in the Doctor’s honor, the Master sits in a cell, voluntairly in TL custody to process the hurt Tecteun caused to him and the Doctor. Somewhere in the shadows of the festival, two figures in skull masks and black clothes watch, plotting. The other enemy Tecteun wanted to get rid of has inadvertnetly returned. Their Grandfather caused and averted a paradox of such proportion that it dragged a monstrous enemy back from the dead. Faction Paradox has been reborn, and lie in the shadows, plotting and waiting.

Quick Facts:
Has always worked her ass off as a singer and dancer throughout her life. This was a creative outlet to deal with the stress at home. She was inspired by her father, Stefan VanCamp of the band The Carolina Reapers.
Her mother is a model from Manchester, United Kingdom and met Stefan on the set of a TCR music video in 1992.
Though she’s vastly improved as a person overall, her looks got to her head in high school and she was a good ol’ Regina George type.
When she was off at college, attending Julliard, she scored a record deal with her father’s label VanCamp Records (cliché, I know) and had a two album deal with the company upon her return to the South. They were based out of Charlotte.
Before she was able to release any music, she was dropped by the label as her father passed and her mother was not in support of her pursuing music.
Instead of taking it as a complete loss, she decided to reinvent herself via social media.
She sings a Christmas medley every year at the Fallbrook Christmas tree lighting.
She still performs but on a more local level. She releases her music mostly on soundcloud and Youtube now.
She made a one-time appearance on WWE’s Monday Night Raw where she made out with a popular wrestler. This was a marketing ploy by her label, but it fell through after she was dropped and fans were left wondering what happened to her.
Fawn was the girl that everyone wanted to be. From a young age, there was a fixation on her dollish looks and initially she hated it. She hated the numerous people that would come up to her and her mother and compliment her so much, pinch her cheeks and hug her. She wanted to know why the hell they were interacting with her in the first damn place. It was bad enough they spoke to her, but to go on about how cute she was? Either way, she would often respond with a roll of her eyes before hiding behind her mother and praying that the entire ordeal would be over sooner rather than later. Her father on the other hand had a majorly different part in her life. He was the lead singer and guitarist of The Carolina Reapers, a multi-platinum rock band that lead the movement from the early 90s until the mid-2010s, when Stefan would unfortunately meet his demise.
Fawn was that one girl in middle school whose hair seemed to be accompanied by the wind, never disrupted. Her voice echoed through the hallways but almost in a sing-song manner and one bat of her little eyes and she’d gotten anything she ever wanted. This angered a certain group of girls, girls who called themselves bullying her because of her father’s drug addiction going public. They say every villain has their origin story, and this was Fawn VanCamp’s. These little girls who hated her weren’t just the average, run of the mill bullies. Not at all. They took a pair of scissors to Fawn’s once perfect hair when she was just eleven years old. Her reaction? She blacked out, she decided that from that point on, no one would ever cross her again.
High school would see a Fawn whose hair not only grew back, but she was sporting a face full of makeup and outfits that teetered the line of dress code. The things she would say would cut so incredibly deep that those around her wondered if she was battling some sort of disconnect where she had absolutely no feelings when she spoke. Did she not think about how the things she did and said would make those around her react? No, because she was going to come out on top. Always. Dance had always been apart of her life, but this was when she’d taken it incredibly seriously. She had a few dance schools in mind that she wanted to attend, but the only way to know she was truly successful was if she made it into Julliard on her own accord, without the influence of her father. The cheerleading team was really only to keep her in shape and remind everyone where she was on the totem pole.
New York City. Those bright lights called her name and it was as if the Heavens came down and touched her the day she’d received that acceptance she had been waiting for. Just before her 18th birthday, she was all set to move to the Big Apple and follow her dreams. That summer was probably her wildest. Sleeping around, getting into fights, a last few reminders of why she was that girl.. and then she was gone. Off to meet with her equally as talented peers in dance, seeing what NYC had to offer her. Sadly, this was also the time that her father would overdose for the last time, never to come back from it again. This would send her into a spiral when she arrived in NYC. The spiral only had good outcomes, so she never truly learned from it.
NYC was a wild, wild time. Parties, drugs, more fights but this time on roof tops. She would enter her first serious relationship here, but they were terrible for one another. She was insecure, jealous, worried he would leave her for some botched Barbie and he was manipulative. He had a lot of money and influence, any club she had gotten into was because of him, 5-star hotels, vacations, you name it. She powered through that relationship for four long years, finally ending it after college was over so she could return back home. The small buzz she had for being Stefan VanCamp’s daughter put this relationship as the focal point, her mother hated every second of it.
What she hadn’t expected was for her father’s demise to bite her in the ass. Her uncle dropped her from the label, citing her mother’s begging as the reason for the decision. Of course she was angry, to the point she had been very vocal about it on social media and eyes were honing in on her strained relationship with her mother. She was ready to move on from it. She decided to prove that she deserved her spot on the label, performing in local circuits and writing for other singers. Maybe she would get another chance, or maybe she would be another lost dream. Only time would tell.

Burns Oregon Post Office Mural Detail
New Deal mural entitled "Cattle Round-Up" painted by Jack Wilkinson in 1941. When a new post office was built in the early 90's, the mural was moved to the 2nd floor court room in the Harney County Courthouse.

Introducing Me and My Blog (2012)
I retired from full-time movement work in July of 2011 when I left my job as Leadership Development Coordinator for the AFL-CIO. I took a few months off from work and traveled, caught up on personal business, hosted some friends from the south, renewed connections with some Oregon friends, and enjoyed the Oregon summer and early fall. Currently I’m doing part-time work with the Alliance for a Just Society and I serve on the boards of Western States Center and the Rural Organizing Project.
Now I am figuring out what it means to be “retired” when so much of my life is tied to activism. I’ll be reflecting more on that topic in my upcoming blog posts.
I love travel, my local library (novels, history, biography and autobiography), independent and documentary films, and going out to hear music. I live near downtown Salem and I’m committed to getting to the pool several times each week and doing as many of my errands on foot as possible. I’m learning to cook new recipes and rely as much as possible on locally grown foods. I have a network of friends around the country who I enjoy spending time with. Last year I took a month-long trip with my brother to Paris and the UK and connected with our Welsh cousins. This year I’m traveling to El Salvador with CAUSA, Oregon’s immigrant rights organization, and to Spain with a couple of friends.
My roots are in western Pennsylvania and each of my parents had a Welsh and an English parent. My grandfathers both worked in the steel mills in Homestead and my maternal grandmother was a seamstress in a baby clothes factory and later worked in a hospital laundry doing mending. My paternal great-grandfather was killed in the Homestead mill in an industrial accident and my grandfather Howell went to work there at age 12 to help support his mother and 4 other children. My mom was a secretary for our local school board and my dad worked on-site at big construction projects doing payroll, purchasing, and managing the trailer office and moved around from place to place where the company he worked for was building roads and bridges. I like looking at bridges because my dad got me interested in them.
I started my organizing career in 1973 with ACORN in Ft. Smith Arkansas. I worked with Oregon Fair Share (now Oregon Action), Oregon NARAL and national NARAL (now NARAL Pro-Choice America) in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s. In 1982 I moved to North Carolina and directed the Carolina Community Project, founded NC Fair Share, and then worked regionally in the south with Grassroots Leadership and South Carolina United Action. During that time I had the opportunity to be connected to programs led by the Center for Third World Organizing and the Applied Research Center based in Oakland, CA. I returned to Oregon in the mid-90′s to work as a trainer with Western States Center. In 1997 I moved back to NC to work for the AFL-CIO as a field representative and later became the Deputy Director for the Southern Region and then coordinator of national leadership development programs for staff and elected leaders of our local and state organizations.
Starting with my time at Grassroots Leadership I committed myself to embedding an anti-racist perspective into organizing and training work I am involved in. I am one of the founding members of the National Organizers Alliance and NOA has been an important place of connection and support for me. Through my regional work in the south and northwest, I have met and worked with many amazing organizers and organizations around the country. I am very excited to see the growth of the Occupy movement.
I’m looking forward to writing more in this blog about my retirement plans and questions, my reflections on my work as an organizer and current events, and the travel I’ll be doing over the next couple of years. I’m also including links to organizations I mention on the side bar on my blog page. I hope my readers will comment and both challenge and add to what I have to say.
