thoughts on backrooms..?
ooo i love the backrooms!!! liminal spaces in general honestly. the psychology behind it is really cool with the whole transitional places being empty when they're supposed to be full and oooh my god. the photography and the art helps this out so well. theee are so many times ive felt genuinely unnerved by images... its awesome
im a bit fifty fifty about monsters being in there though. the two horror concepts are equally good. the idea of the monster being tangible and actually terrifying is good, but you cant play it up to much or have to make it actually terrifying. doctor rat does this really well with keeping any hostile enemies to the last level, and keeping the victims unprepared. but... i think the scariest one is. the monster from the oldest view... i havent even watched it yet because that beastie is so damn scary. what the guck!!!
but also... not knowing what is after you is also super scary!!! being driven mad by isolation and your own fear. slowly going insane as you wander neon grassy planes and suffocating offices... never knowing what will happen. its so!!! godd
neither are nessecarily worse than the other, i think the proper execution can make both work really well. also the backrooms wili i really like even if it wasnt the original intent of the backroom's horror by IDing the monsters... but i am so biased i love SCP and shit like that obsessed even.
also the backrooms game has wonderful graphics but it looks like you can get to absolute tomfoolery /pos

Thinking about Dungeon Meshi and how it emphasizes that in order to survive, one must consume other lives, whether they be plant, fungi, or animal. And I'm especially thinking about it from a Buddhist point of view, where all life is connected, and how the phrase, "Itatakimasu," a polite form of the "to receive" verb, is a standard Japanese pre-meal ritual. Because to eat is to receive the lives of the organisms that have contributed to your meal, the efforts of the farmers that grew the crops, that raised the animals, the breeding of said crops and animals from generations past. Countless events have happened so that you can eat a slice of pepperoni pizza, or whatever your dinner may be.
It's all part of an infinitely complex web of people, of plants, of animals, which led you to this meal, and "itadakimasu" is an expression of gratitude to all those who have led to this point where you are eating a meal.
And in Dungeon Meshi, this chain is no less, despite the foreign ingredients. The dungeon has its own ecosystem, each piece playing its part. And to consume any of it is to respect its place, to appreciate the sacrifice of life that has led to the nourishment that allows you to continue your own life. And to take more than you need to survive is a crime against this ecosystem.

Etho doodles in which I let my inner dinosaur nerd take over 😔 and also have no idea how to shade
Get it cause he's old and washed up haha... ok but actual raptor Etho hybrid justification below cut
To be honest the main reason was because I really wanted a hybrid in the mix who wasn't some furry creature and a reptile or amphibian or smth instead. Etho still ended up feathered but whatever it's close enough! But for ACTUAL reasoning:
He does feel damn ancient, like an old deity of the mcyt space that no one can dislike. Dinosaurs are the same!! They're old but still thought of with great fascination and fondness, everyone loves dinosaurs...
Dinosaurs are ever so mysterious, as many advancements as we make there's still so much we don't know. Just as we know jackshit about mister Kakashi skin man. Also, there are so many incomplete skeletons out there. I didn't have a particular species in mind for Etho, because where's the mystery in that? He can be one of those 5% skeleton 95% speculation dinosaurs like this guy!! Missing jaw and all
Tumblr media
"I'm a runner, not a protector" - so, a raptor, or more specifically the Dromaeosauridae family, which literally has "running/runner" in its name
But! I'm always a fan of stuff going against its nature, especially in this case! Etho states he's not a runner yet protects his allies rather fiercely even in total silence. Eg refusing to kill Cleo in SL or to give away Tango's location during the LimL manhunt, same for Grian in SL. He was a bit flaky in 3L I think? And he only started to have genuine care for allies in LL with Bdubs? Though he is still very much a runner in many cases like during the LL Wither fight. Research also strongly suggests that most if not all raptors were solitary hunters, and the way I see Etho (through my shamefully limited watchtime of his POVs...) he feels a lot like someone who ultimately only trusts himself at the start even if he's pleasant and allying with others, and doesn't seem to think he can carry his weight in groups though he doesn't voice this a lot. That's just how Etho is, very composed, but it feels like there's an insecurity there, showcased especially in SL but again I haven't seen almost any of his POVs in full so maybe I'm talking out of my ass!! Sorry ethogirls I'm only a sidegig ethogirl myself... But yeah tldr to me he gives off the vibe of an otherwise solitary animal struggling to find 100% sure footing in a pack. In whichever ways he does go against his nature, its not usually made a show of
At the mention of a raptor, a lot of people will probably think of the glamourized Jurassic Park Velociraptors. But those awesome guys from the movies are actually the size of chickens. In general though, dinosaurs tend to be a bit.. exaggerated in media, despite how inherently fascinating they already are. And I think it fits Etho because we all know how the Lifers seem to fear and mancrush on him when he's just some dork with perfect capability to become pathetic at a moment's notice. Still, he's a clearly skilled player and still respected without question Etho's not some killer machine like some people make dinosaurs out to be. He's just a fellow creature fulfilling his role in the ecosystem 👍
dinosaurs are cool
The hook-like sickle claws on the feet... something something fishing rod
I swear I'm not turning all my Lifers into hybrids I'm not!! Still plenty normal humans in the mix I swear....... But Etho is such a radical dude, I really wanted to do something more for him. The whole Kitsune thing that I often see associated with him is really cool. I don't actually know the reasoning for it but I assume something something naruto, but also, him being this ancient mythical cryptid who people know so little about, you know? It makes SO much sense. So anyway I turned him into a dinosaur instead rawr
As a herbivore advocate I also considered stuff like the triceratops (known for how they protect themselves and their own) but nah the raptor symbolism...

hi expanding a bit more on my "the necromancy of thay book rai had was wielded by the person who killed his family" thing. because its so evil. inspired by @the0retically's post
warning for discussions of violence, family death and other such things
okay first: there are three major characters here. the family friend of rai's, rai himself, and the necromancy book's whispers and promises. also rai's family. saying this as the whispers of the thay book are a different thing from the person possessing it, and can assume control at will <333
second: i'll be so honest... a lot of this is inspired by bad bad things by ajj. i just think the song lyrics are important to understand my rimmy ramblings
also like,,, none of this is concrete if anyone has cooler ideas let me know i will love them<33 this is jsut me making stuff up and having fun :-3
rai's family strikes me as around middle class. his original birth family was from baldur's gate, but after The Incident where he lost all memory of his parents, he began hopping around. i think he'd want to go to baldur's gate because he felt a natural pull towards it and might've been going there already to do research. i think he has memories of his parents faces and memories, but after a very stark, red burst in the memories he forgets what happened. its like. positive memory -> red blank -> waking up without his family, orphaned. like that.
enough about post-orphaned rai. now about pre-orphaned rai!!
rai's family would have consisted of his mother, father, and brother. i think it'd be a bit interesting if his parents were originally a three-parent deal, but one of them died around when rai was born and so now it's just two. rai's relationship with all of them is fond and good, however he can't really place their first names, try as he might. he might've been too young to learn his parent's names, but his brother? that's his brother... why can't he remember?
regardless, now its for the potatoes of the story: the family friend. the family friend, a librarian, recently lost her husband and is looking for a place to stay after the fact due to grief. she brought with her a new book collection; one she hadn't opened yet.
in that contained the necromancy of thay. rai was with her when she pulled it out, and was slowly ushered out upon her viewing it. she began to get weirder, whispering and lashing out. sobbing could be heard from her room, begging the book that she doesn't want to do this.
one night, rai is playing hide and seek with his brother. he finds the perfect hiding spot, and waits. rai waited. and waited. he'd thought his brother had given up on the chase, until he heard it.
you see; it's too good of a hiding spot. not because his brother wouldn't find him. it's that the book wouldn't.
screaming, screaming and begging filled the air as purple hums of magic and scorching black whispers followed. rai had to hear the squelch of ripped flesh, the screaming of his father before a blood-choked silence from him. and the begging from his mother... begging the guest not to hurt her baby boy, not to hurt her son.
hers was the quickest.
that is where the memory ends because uh poeticism over guys i don't know what happens. i think it'd make sense for the guest to wipe rai's memory, sending him off as the book promises it'll get him one way or another (the campaign). and the reason i'm going for that... is because it ties back to the original post. the fact that tal was asking "what could we have done to save you?" but. there wasn't anything they could do. rai's fate was sealed the moment he got that amethyst- no, actually. the moment the guest got that book. the moment the guest read those pages, there was no winning. there was nothing tal could have done to save rai, not from the very beginning.
of course, tal doesn't know about rai's whole backstory, but... something in tal knows. something in tal knows that try as he might... there was nothing he could have done to save his best friend. nothing they could do. and... he killed his best friend. even if there was something they could do, tal let his rage get the best of him and punched rai to death. why? he doesn't want to bite. he wants to protect his friends, he wants to be a good person, but... he just can't stop lashing out. maybe if he didn't punch rai, maybe if he wasn't inconsolable after rai's death, he could have done something. maybe... maybe if he wasn't a monster, he could have done something.
klip... i think rai and klip were like besties. you got a guy who's forgotten his fathers, and a dude who looks like he sorts all of his fishing equipment by type and color. of course they're friends. klip must have been heartbroken he couldn't do anything to help in the fight, that he indirectly started it by trying to distract rai from the book. he feels a pit in his stomach that he managed to fuck up this badly, at the cost of his friend. is... is klip really as good of a person as he thinks he is? he let this happen to his friend. the signs were obvious, and yet he let it happen. he just sat back until it was too late. why couldn't he stop rai? that's what heroes do. is he even a hero anymore?
and xiv... xiv literally gave him that amethyst, their last words were "we should have never trusted you!!".... no wonder they moved on so quickly they indirectly killed the guy!!! and... the whole "you act like you're so much better than me!" do they feel bad they never told rai about what he did to set him off? what if it was minor, what if it was completely accidental? what if if it could be solved in five minutes? what if, if xiv just put down their walls and didn't ignore everything to bottle it up, xiv wouldn't have left rai leave this world with his last words from them being a nasty remark? why did they have to wild shape, why did they have to go and ruin it all? why is it always their fault?
but... none of them are at fault. tal is not a monster. klip is still a hero. it is not xiv's fault.
this couldn't have been prevented. it just sucked they were friends with a man who was destined to die.
anyway <3333 im going crazy does anyone want me to pick up ingredients for coconut chickpea curry and rice. also do you think tal saw rai in hell or did he think rai managed to go to heaven ^_^

i think part of why npmd works so well is bc the nerdy prudes are all kinda real af??? like... i dressed just like pete in highschool and have pictures to prove it. for better or for worse, watching richie in certain scenes was like fondly cringing at my past self. ruth's reflexive "don't bully me!" and their collective tendency to assume the worst whenever the popular kids talk to them (and the realisation that not all of them are bad, actually, some of them - like steph - are really cool)... god. it's so real. painfully so, at times
