The Air Nomads are based on Tibetan Buddhism and its monks and monasteries, but the thing is that in pre-conquest Tibet, the economy which sustained those monasteries depended (like everywhere in "pre-modern" societies) on vast amounts of peasants to grow and supply food. The Air Nomads lack that aspect, instead being nomadic pastoralists in some weird and undefined way that's consistent with them living most of the time in giant stone temples.

However, I think it's possible that there were some non-Air Nomad people living in the Air Nomad territories, and that the Nomads might have had some sort of economic relationship with them. The majority of Air Nomad land seems to have been relatively unexploited and the Nomads would have had to been actively trying to prevent people from settling if they didn't want someone trying to move in.

HII!!! omg this is my first ask about my cotl au (and first ask in general yippee!!) you have just released a demon my friend. (and tysm :3)

OK SO! I was kinda reading the lore tablets in game and didn’t understand what the fuck was going on so I decided to make my own lore and run with it! :3 I always thought it’d be interesting if the Sheep never worshipped the Old Faith, instead I envisioned them more like Plimbo or some of the NPCs who have livelihoods that overshadow any cult like behavior. Or at least any that abided to that of the Bishops rather than their own culture.

I took inspiration from nomadic groups like the romani people and other eastern tribes in terms of clothing and style. (which i have yet to post my designs oopsie…) The idea of nomads kinda flowed into that idea of a ‘herd mentality’ sheep carry by having them travel and bond together like that. They’re very musical and are insanely talented at detailed wool cloths and textile crafting and trading herbs and spices. (Also the little earrings you see my lamb wear also speak to their wood workmanship! Each earring has a specific meaning whether it accords to age, family, etc. But by the time the lamb becomes a god.., they forget half of it :( )

Once Narinder had split off from the Old Faith and began to get more greedy with his power and start to question the Old Gods, that’s when Shamura had the vision of the prophecy and the reaping began. So The Lamb (i don’t have a name for them yet but I’ve been thinking of Ewe = Eve like from the bible), is born during the reaping, and has very much grown up with a more hurried ‘on-the-road’ lifestyle.

Most of the Sheep actually turned to Narinder’s faith (that was separate from the old faith) because they saw comfort in death being something they could believe in. Sheep are prey animals by default, so the idea was even more instilled into the herds once the reaping began.

(ALSO! Narinder is very fond of sheep in general as they made for the most loyal of followers.. plus they made him really pretty garments and wrote songs as offerings)

I’ve just realized i’ve probably talked your ear off into oblivion (big apologizes to anyone who’s reading this far 😭) but yeah I’m just very passionate abt this au of mine.

So anyways! Once the reaping gets more severe, the herds begin to break off smaller and smaller to protect one another. Usually it would’ve been 4-6 big families and family friends traveling together, but by the time The Lamb was born, they’d only travel is groups of 1-2 families. Though she did get to experience the culture of her kind up until her early adulthood when her sister was kinda… slaughtered 💀 They had been the last two sheep unknowingly, and after much running, hiding, and crying alone in the woods. The Lamb was captured, brought to slaughter, and everyone knows the rest.

Though they did buck out at the Bishops and put up a decent fight beforehand.

There is MUCH more in regards to cult life, my au version of narilamb has a lot of meat to it, but I’ll spare the yap for another day HFHSHD

Just a lot of tired rambling beneath the cut. Descriptions of not so great parenting and insinuated queerphobia, I guess?

Today my mother that I see once a year (and i'm very happy for those circumstances. 7 days a year are torture enough) called me on my dad's phone since she knew I wouldn't pick up if I saw her number to inquire about it. Or rather, interrogate me about it.

Her last update was me insinuating I had a girlfriend (which I didn't. I did say it out of spite though, since I'm afab and my mom is enough of a fucking queerphobe, she insists on disrespecting me in all ways possible and still hasn't managed to call me by the right names or pronouns even once without mocking me off the ends of the earth) and that nearly gave her an aneurysm, so I quite enjoyed not correcting her about that. That was nearly two years ago.

I also have never, never, ever brought up Pedro or anything of the like to her because she will never see any of his things on her own (she's kind of extremist old-fashioned when it comes to electronics and media too, what a shocker) and her favorite pastime is destroying the things I enjoy and making me miserable.

For some reason, she saw this picture today (I've had it for months) and her first thought was that this is a picture I took of my (non-existent) boyfriend. So she called me to complain that

1. Why doesn't she know about him? Clearly, we are best friends and she loves me oh so much and god, I am such a terrible daughter who just wants to make her miserable, what did I ever do to you? She's incredibly upset that I would not share these things with her (gasp) and she wants to meet him. I literally live in a different country. There are over ten hours of a drive between us (and thank fuck for that, physical distance is the only thing stopping her from randomly showing up on my doorstep and ruining my week and instantly making my mental health skyrocket 50 feet beneath the ground).

2. I seem to have fun. He seems to have fun. God forbid I have joy in my life that she can't get a chance to ruin and make about herself.

3. I am terrible with photography. Why is this picture so blurry? Also, he looks older. Have I finally realized the whole queer thing is just to make her suffer and myself special so I don't feel so worthless? Having a man put me in my place is just what I need, because clearly I'm still in my rebellious stage, thinking I don't want to see her every weekend.

4. She's also calling to remind me that it's mother's day, I owe it to her to celebrate her special day and she's so upset I didn't get her a week-long trip to Italy for two (that I wouldn't even be invited to) as a present. It's not like I'm barely paying rent and am lucky to have 20 bucks left at the end of a month.

And every time, she's fucking surprised as if it was big news that I'm not really into spending time with her as her metaphorical and literal punching bag, door mat and therapist. I wonder why that is. For fucks sake.

I am currently very tempted to photoshop myself into pictures with Pedro and putting them as my profile on that social she's apparently now stalking, slowly getting more unhinged until she's so fucking offended by it, she won't try to call me any longer out of pure disgust.

Apparently "Oh god, yes please" is not the right answer to her threat of putting me in therapy and going no contact because I'm so fucking horrible and bullying her by being myself and not giving a shit about her opinion anymore. I would have gotten myself therapy fucking years ago if I could afford it, and this is a very weird attempt to control a full ass adult who lives in a whole other country.

And if there are do they know about each other? Do they have borders, maps, etc? Do they have their own United Nations? Do they hold conferences? Do they go to war??? I think Queen Thistle and Queen Marigold were from a kingdom different from the Marigold and Little kingdom and were married off or something. Arranged marriage trope is craazyyy I seen it too many times.

Sorry off topic. I mean, Queen and King Marigold have their own kingdom and they do visit the Little Kingdom from time to time so that’s something. But we don’t really know anything about their kingdom really. Also the little kingdom has planes and boats. They’re the size of toy planes and boats but they’re pretty fast from what I can tell from that one holiday episode so I’m assuming they can visit other continents. That would be so crazy.

I’m making my own little kingdom based on my Nigerian culture because why not. I will make more and everything.

Anyways I’m starting university on Tuesday so uploads will slow down then.

Atla OC mini ramble cuz I miss my gurl! (and I get to draw again YIPPE)

I decide to made Hikaru age being 14 when they finally found out they are an airbender, also in the time of PRE-100 WAR timeline cuz I like the idea she's aang old friend like bumi and kuzon (which I'd ramble that later))

Basically to say her discovery of her own bending is late, playing into the idea of late bloomer bender and since her childhood mainly took place in the fire nation with no connection to the spiritually like the air nomad normally would, she's not connecting to that side of her origin hence its manifest quite late than normal.

I'd imagine the time before the air nomad genocide, things already tense up between all the nations, especially fire nation and the air nomads, (because war propaganda, sozin planning, colonialism etc etc) so it'd be extra difficult for her to even began, yet she still tries anyways.

In my sketch sheet of her, I add that she has a hot temper (like her mother) thus makes her airbending learning even more difficult cuz she's always soo angry and easy to upset that it became uncontrolled at times 😭😭 (like a storm or tornado), playing into idea how the air nomad people always seem so free and happy (due to their upbringings, surrounding and teaching are not up tight) contrast to how Hikaru was brought up back in her homeland, will she grow out and let go of those emotions? Idk

Dick Grayson and Aang

ok but upon watching Avatar the Last Airbender (probably as a kid, but maybe as a young adult) for the first time, Dick Grayson would at first be really into it but progressively relate to Aang more and more.

Carefree young boys raised in a nomadic society, free to roam with their friends & family: Haley’s Circus + Graysons // Air Nomads + Aang’s friend’s all over the world 

and when they are separated from their families and culture through death (Dick + Aang) and time (mostly Aang, but arguably most of Dick’s life spent away from the circus) and make a new family with the people that they meet along the way to fix the world and use their abilities for good: 

Circus and the Grayson’s Romani heritage -->  Dick is part of the Batfam and becomes a vigilante with the intention of catching Tony Zucco.

Meanwhile  Southern Air Temple and the Air Nomads --> Aang meets Katara and Sokka, and later the rest of Gaang doing his best to fulfil his duty as Avatar to stop the Fire Nation, the people that committed genocide against his community 

Despite their circumstances, both boys put on a brave face and do their best to cheer up those around them, unafraid to show emotions or shy away from hard work. (they’re also both total dorks and I love them for it)

While going on their various life journeys, Dick’s growth from Robin to Nightwing and Aang’s forced character growth before Sozin’s Comet, both boys have to blend into their new worlds without trying to forget their past and their true motivation.

I feel its less obvious for Dick, especially as Nightwing, but occasionally we get hints (in comics, movies, games etc) about his family’s culture and traditions, or reminders about the Robin name and colours.

On the other hand is Aang’s clear struggle to balance himself, a goofy airbender who happens to also be the Avatar, with someone who is grieving his entire people and feels the weight of expectation and fear of letting his culture and its teachings die out as the sole survivor. This becomes even more apparent (to me at least) when Aang is trying to find a way out of killing Ozai. He knows he can’t let Ozai go unpunished, but he also doesn’t want to go against the Air Nomad teachings as its sole student, to kill him, or perhaps he is scared and clinging to the only thing he can, his principles.

Either way, I feel like as much as Dick (and all the batfam to be honest) would love Avatar the Last Airbender, Dick would relate to the show and Aang the most. And when he watched one of the last episodes, where Aang struggles to balance his heritage with his duty - his past and his present - with the Lion turtles, you best bet Dick Grayson was Feeling Things (and thats ok)

they also both have angsty red brother figures - i.e. Zuko and Jason
