I wanna talk about it more lol
Something that's interesting to think about is the fact that had Cal rejected the crown at the end of KC, it's very likely all of those Nortan High Houses that were supporting Cal, and by extension the guard, would've left to support Maven. Like I think in every scenario Mare would've (and would've had every right to) been pissed at him because in her eyes it's a full betrayal. Him taking the crown back after everything reaffirmed to her the belief that she really can't trust anyone. (I also think what made him taking the crown back was even more fucked for Mare was that Cal assumed she was angry on the basis of he was going to have to marry Evangeline but thats a whole other thing lmao) BUT I think politically him taking the crown was the best move for the Guard. If he abdicated the throne it would've made Maven the rightful heir. Like I'm surprised Cal was allowed to be so hands on with the war given that had he died, Maven's claim would've been completely valid. Cal having such a huge importance in the entire war is so so interesting cause like by the end of the war when he goes through with abdicating the throne it's because Maven is dead. And then when Cal had his kids both of them had to do the same because they were next in line like that country just aint giving up lmao

rewatching the second how to train your dragon movie and “you’re as beautiful as the day i lost you” tibe and cori tibe and cori tibe and cori-
i absolutely support all elara and coriane supporters, being a part of them of course
but tibe and cori have me feeling some type of way i dont know how to articulate
its about watching the person you love slowly shift and change into someone worse and unrecognizable and being unable to do anything to stop it but still,, still there’s glimpse’s of who they used to be and so you love them regardless for better and worse, even as it marks your downfall
its about selfishly and desperately grasping and holding onto the person you love even knowing the danger it puts them in, even feeling as they unravel in your arms, their thread and seams coming lose and knowing not how to stitch them back together but still you hold so tightly, choosing blissful ignorance instead of facing the reality youve wrought with your selfish wants
its about the tragedy and gloom, about finding her dead in the bathtub, her wrists slit by her own hands and knowing you died with her even as your body continues to move upon the earths surface
its about laying all your grief and sorrow onto your sons shoulders who bears your eyes and hair and body but grows into her heart and ideals
did tibe collapse in on himself when he realized cal inherited cori’s love for tinkering, her gentle and kind nature? did he try desperately to wring it out of him for fear that he would meet the same end she did?
you found the person you loved dead, having taken her own life and you allowed her memory to be erased from the walls of the place you both called home and why? because you could not face the truth, because you, who you truly were beneath your surface, lies buried in her tomb? because it was easier than facing what you had done, what you allowed to happen with your selfishness? There is so much blood upon your hands but the one that brought you to your knees, the one that unraveled you whole was not your son’s, not the red girl with lightening you sneered at, not all those who died before and after but Her’s. Coriane’s blood stains your hands deeper than anyone elses and it undid you, reduced you to a husk pretending to still be alive.
And was it worth it, Tibe?

one of my absolute favorite things about the multi povs in King's Cage - War Storm, is the fact that every single person that had a pov chapter (besides Maven) has called or referred to Maven as a child.
I rly wish I had ss for this but I'm too lazy to go through every chapter to find them (💀)
but I remember that the more the story went on, the more the characters began to realize what a child Maven was. which is ironic considering the fact that he turned from a boy prince that no one looked at to the King of Norta who everyone feared.
everyone slowly began to realize what a child Maven Calore truly was. and it's almost haunting. the only person who I feel always knew was Cal.

Why I Ship Mareven and Yes, I'm Aware that They're Toxic
I've noticed a couple of posts questioning how some readers ship Mareven given how toxic it was and proceed to list off all the terrible things that they did to each other through out the series.
Before I start my rant. Warning, this is long and I might just ramble at the end. Also please be reminded that these are MY reasons, as to why I enjoy this ship. I don't represent the whole Mareven shipping team. I made this post based on MY observation and the desire to absolve myself from the feeling of shame for liking Mareven.
We can't deny it. Anyone who read the series, even just the first book could easily tell that Mareven is toxic.
Which leads to the most common question for this ship. Why is Mare and Maven still being shipped even after Maven's betrayal and even past Glass Sword?
Simple, it's their unique and complex dynamic. They are both deeply flawed characters that have frightening similarities. Which could have lead to a wonderful friendship or a romantic one.
However, due to their social status and political beliefs. Mare joining the Scarlet Guard to free the Reds and Newbloods from Silver rule. Maven wanting to be king of Norta and was willing to do ANYTHING to keep his crown . They are of opposition to each other's goals, which lead them being sworn enemies. Causing severe pain and suffering to the other, when given the opportunity.
Yet, there would be moments between the cruel actions and harsh words. Where one of them would show affection in hopes of rekindling what they had and the other mourning the person that they thought they knew.
Even viewing them through the lense of a non-shipper. They have a fascinating exchange of dialogue and the uncomfortable amount of tension whenever they are near each other, even the mere mention of the other's name would momentarily push them off balance. There was simply no dull moment between these two.
The REAL question should be: "Is Mareven being a toxic ship REALLY the reason some readers dislike the ship OR is there something else at play?
Before I continue: It's understandable not to like a ship, if a toxic relationships between fictional characters aren't your cup of tea.
However! I don't think "being toxic" should be the daming reason to fully drop a ship and EXPECT everyone else to do so. Because I feel that those Mareven Ship "Dislikers" don't seem to detect the MAIN cause of their dislike for this ship.
I think the dislike of the ship could be attributed from some Mareven fanfics and shippers. Maybe they dislike how they treated Mare and Maven when paired together.
For example: Mare being seen as an object or tool in fixing Maven and making him happy. Void of any emotion or flaws, as she is simply an extension to the desires and fantasies of the writer. Other cases, some Mareven shippers openly trash Mare for not reciprocating Maven's affections, as they see him as a unloved child that needs a hug. Seeming to forget that Maven is completely capable of committing atocities against the people he "loves" and other characters that were unfortunate enough to encounter him and his mother.
The simplification and misinterpretation of both complex characters once they are viewed as a couple is frustrating.
Which is why I think the EXTERNAL FACTORS, such as SOME Mareven fanfics and shippers surrounding the Mareven ship, are MOSTLY the cause that ignited the dislike for the ship not just Mareven being toxic.
To put it simply, there is nothing wrong or shameful for liking a toxic ship like Mareven. It does not AUTOMATICALLY mean you have a twisted perception of what a functioning relationship should be nor have poor reading comprehension.
I also noticed that some of those post that dislike Mareven are also Maven fans, claiming that Maven is their favorite character and are also aware of his flaws (and crimes).
So, I can even throw the same argument to them.
What's the difference between liking Maven Calore, one of the main antagonist of the series that caused harm to a number of characters, and liking Mareven that is a toxic ship where both characters were toxic towards each other?
Note: Since it's a veey messy essay. I am more than open for a discussion.

The Great War: A Maven Calore Fanfic
Part 1
"I pledge myself to you, Iris Cygnet, princess of the Lakelands. Will you accept?”       Maven does not even throw a glance at me, he looks at Iris while saying these words. But everyone looks at me. They don't look at the King and the woman he just proposed to, they look at me. They wait for a sign. They wait for me to object, or at least leave this damned place. They hope for a show, a drama.       But I don't give it to them. Even though their gazes make me feel like there are words written on my face- humiliating letters of black ink that will permanently stay on my skin. I just sit there, and watch the love of my life getting engaged with another woman. There is no expression on my face. No fury, no misery. I keep my wounds hidden.       "I put my hand in yours, and pledge my life to yours," Iris replies, after her own traditions and the customs of her kingdom. "I accept, Your Majesty."       He puts his bare hand out to take hers, the bracelet at his wrist sparking as he moves. A current of fire hits the air, snakelike and curling around their joined fingers. It does not burn her, though it certainly passes close enough to try. Iris never flinches. Never blinks. That’s why she is the one whom he is marrying, I think. Not you.
I feel like I might throw up any moment now. I turn my gaze away from them. I just look at my hands on my lap. I can’t hear anything anymore. I am fully focused on my pain now. It is a foolish move, I know. Just a moment ago, I was determined that I was not going to give them even a hint. But my feelings have always been my weakness. I suck at controlling them. Or hiding them under a flawless mask, like Maven does.
When people start to stand up, I understand that it is time to go. I get on my wobbly feet. And just when I am about to turn my back, icy blue eyes meet mine. I suddenly stop. I can taste blood in my mouth. Every memory we share is a piece of glass, but every single one of them is broken and they draw blood. I press my lips together in fear of silver streaming down my chin. The question pounds in my head: Why did you do this? But I must admit that I know the answer. He needed to. And I will be fair, every king that is in Maven’s place would do the same. But he had a choice.
Even though he looks at me as if I am the only real thing in his world in front of everyone, I feel so heavy-hearted that I can’t keep looking at him. I swiftly turn my back and start to walk. I feel so cold and the freezing weather is not the only reason. That’s why the fur collar of my coat and my leather gloves don’t keep me warm. I feel like I don’t breathe anymore. Everything inside me is dead.
“My lady.”
I stop and turn my back just to face one of the Sentinels. I scowl at him even though he did not do anything to deserve it, because I got no energy to deal with anybody. I just want to let my pain drown me. I don’t want to fight anymore. I don’t have it in myself.
“His Majesty is waiting for you in his car.”
The heart of glass on my chest feels heavy. It has dealt with grief so many times until this day and it was successful at handling it, but this time hits different. Because it is Maven. King of Norta who is waiting for me just after his new engagement. It sounds like a joke, but I know that it is not. I want to scream at the Sentinel’s face that he should tell his King to go fuck himself. But I can’t. Even a Sentinel shouldn’t witness someone’s disobedience to the King. It is already a fragile reign.
“Lead the way.” I say, with no will in my voice.
The Sentinel does as I say. I take reluctant steps as I silently follow him. I don’t want to see Maven. Moreover, I don’t want to be alone with him in his car. I can’t talk to him because I know that I will burst into tears if I try. I don’t want him to marry somebody else. I selfishly want him all to myself even though it is not possible anymore.
I can’t see Maven because the windows of his car are so dark that nobody could see anything from outside. But when the Sentinel opens the door for me, I see him sit on the large backseat of the car. When our gazes meet, I feel sick to my stomach once again. My gloved hands clunch into fists. I’m so angry at him that I can’t breathe. I’m furious because I wish I could hate him for making me suffer, but no matter what he does I will never be able to do that.
I want to punch something, and scream until my throat hurts. I need to destroy it, and watch it turning into ashes. I always likened my heart to a fire, but right now I feel like I’m the fire itself. I am made of destruction, but my pain always keeps burning me.

A Red Queen Social-Political-Economic Meta devolves into prison reform (bear w/ me)
links at the very end smile. ask me to elaborate a point or don’t idc. I will be talking more regardless.
How This All Started:
Me, writing: do you think that rq story aus (canon-divergence specifically) can work w/out the existence of silver/reds or at the very least power/no power dynamics, or rather, how well would the plot work without that?
Me, opening new doc: bc like, the rq story is built off the usurpation of the silver/red dichotomy and calling into question the validity of oppression with the existence of a third group which shares qualities of the two (if you wanna get sociopolitical with it).
TL;DR: Cameron Cole’s role in the narrative works as a connection between the oppressive systems irl and in the rqverse by her simply being a Black girl from New Town and a Newblood silent.
Norta’s Social, Political, and Economic System
Thinking about it more, I think that RQ can be seen as a racial-adjacent (blood, in canon) oppression story and class oppression story, but combining those lenses to more closely mirror what we experience in real life is, iffy at best. Since race as we understand it in our world is purely social while in rqverse there is a biological difference (which uhm. I don't end up talking about eugenics but let's keep that in mind yeah?) in which the system of oppression is made from. That system of oppression then allows for the discrimination of Reds in society, which can be seen at its worst in New Town and tech towns in general. Reds are at the bottom of the social ladder with no hope of climbing above their station.
Now as a class story, this is where economics would come in.  And since there is no economic mobility for Reds, RQ as a story rooted in class falls apart. Basically (without thinking myself in circles) it cannot be only a class story and it cannot be a story in which both social factors and economic factors combine, since there is no sense of "class" in the Red's lives, all of them suffer. But this is true only in the Mare's point of view, the Silvers in universe are separated by high houses, low houses, and "common." Yet, this is only where we begin to see politics come in as the Houses are separated by respect and power as well as wealth. The connection to monarchy is viable for those in the Houses and is all draped in political pomp and shit. idk man it's one am and i'm thinking too hard.  SO the sociopolitical works in tandem w the social-economical whilst for Reds politics is unfathomable bc they're second class citizens.
Prisons in The USA
WHICH BRINGS ME TO (the worse segue in history) TO CAMERON COLE *cheers whoops etc*  I cannot for the life of me get over how Cameron is pretty much the only Black Red "main" character and she came from New Town, which is a place where everyone works to create for the rest of the country. This is a little too similar to the reality of prisons and like, the generational Blackness of it all is a lot for me to NOT look over.
Note: Prisons are long-term holding facilities where convicted people go to carry out their sentences, Jails are short-term holding facilities and most are awaiting charges or trial (Prison Fellowship).
One thing to understand is that prisons are rife with modern-day slavery, especially in the US (which rq was written in the context in). Last I checked, the US held about 25% of the world's prisoners, about a million people incarcerated, not to count those still in the penal system (like in jail, probation, or juvenile detention). Not only that, prisons are often private, not public, so there is an active economical interest in having as many prisoners as possible. You need bodies to make money in that industry. Not only that, prisoners work for little to no money and aren't even guaranteed to be able to re-enter society. In fact, many prisoners do not, the prison recidivism rate is still over a third in the US, meaning that over one-third of prisoners commit a crime again and become re-incarcerated (Wisevoter). There are a fuck ton of reasons why this is, mostly, in my opinion, the lack of effective reform programs. But you cannot deny that there is a corporate interest in having prisoners in prisons to make money and make profits for the low cost of labor. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), prisoners make $2 Billion in goods only to be paid an average of  $0.13 to $0.52  an hour, of which "the government takes up to 80 percent of these wages for “room and board,” court costs, restitution, and other fees like building and sustaining prisons. These wage deductions generally leave incarcerated workers with less than half of their gross pay" (ACLU). One more thing, who's populating these prisons?
Statistically, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, White people make up 57.3% of prisoners nationwide while the next biggest racial group, Black people make up 38.6% (Note: This is by race, and the government's definition of race. Hispanic is considered as an ethnic group, which is why the data about Latine people is not on the federal website. Hispanic group makes up 29.7% of prisoners, to satiate your curiosity)(BOP). However, you have to take into account the rates compared to population. Let's take a look at New York State, which in the Rqverse includes The Stilts and Archeon. White people make up about 55% of the population and account for 23% of people in prison. Black people on the other hand, make up about 14% of the population and account for 49% of prisoners (PPI).  Like WOW! What a jump am I right?
This disparity is again, attributed to many many things and long history of racial injustice and racist policing (looking at you stop and frisk, which is also a whole different problem i would LOVE to talk about), but as stated, has its roots in racial injustice and how the US never bothered to recover from slavery, Jim Crow, and treating minorities (most notably Black people) as second class citizens.
Cameron Cole
Okay, so now you have the IRL quick breakdown, let’s talk about Cameron Cole. Cameron Cole is a young Black girl who is from New Town and is a newblood with the power of Silence. That sentence is the core of her character as she stands in the plot (nothing about personality, we may get into this later idk yet. I have now officially passed 1k words on this. So. we will see fr.) Cameron’s identity as a young Black girl is not explored as, again, in the rqverse race isn’t a thing, it’s all about blood, baby! (that's what a vampire would say fr). So, in blood: she’s a newblood, one of those in-betweens that usurps the dichotomy yaddi-yadda, and is really just a socio-political thing, because Newbloods haven’t been around/ known for long enough in Norta to have bearing economically (class) and Maven decided to be Maven about newbloods in general, not just Mare’s standing as a Newblood ( he legitimized Newbloods as a blood group in Norta, essentially). But to get into the whole young Black girl, we need to draw the connection between prisons and New Town.
Okay, no more jokes (though that is true), Black people are seen as second-class citizens in the eyes of the systems in place today, and that is reflected in Red Queen as a Black character is a victim of modern-day slavery within that universe. Her existence calls for comparison between the oppressive systems in the rqverse and the world as we know it.
New Town is one of many  tech towns, dedicated to industry, building all of Norta’s mechanical goods and basically the cornerstone of Nortan economy. Everyone in there is forced to work despite the horrible conditions and have no chance of entering society and for little to no pay (sound familiar?). While the prison system in the US is a continuation of modern-day slavery, New Town just cut out the middleman of the police system and put them straight into modern day-slavery. Making the notable characters from New Town Black draws all these lines together and provide commentary on our world today: Black people still can’t win!
Now, as a Black girl, even in the RQverse, Cameron is still saddled with the same generational struggles Black women face due to the intersection of their Black and Woman identities. (source: am Black, am a woman). Because not only is the woman expected to look after household affairs and family matters, but now we’re dealing with racial inequalities. It’s a lot on a girl’s plate right? Cameron and Morrey remind me of all the Black women who have lost the Black men in their life due to violence and my own fears for my brother each time he leaves the house.
Violence to us is like gun violence and police brutality and shit like that but to them is the war, where similar to the police system. Aw fuck new section time
The Lakelander War as Control
So my basic theory here is that the Lakelander war is used as the police system, not necessarily as like, actual policing but as a power move. It’s like Atlanta’s Cop City to me, a way to be like “heyyyyy don’t forget who has the power to kill you. Okie!”
Back to Regular Programming
Where violence is perpetuated by over policing and the war on drugs and such polices affecting minority populations irl, the war (and the duel things i forgot what they're called, and bowl of bones) exacerbate the uhm. Power dynamics. Reds are powerless Silvers powerful . “Look at what we can do” and shit.
Edit: Lynching is also in this category. It’s about power, yeah.
So Cameron has to save Morrey from this violence. I have to fear about my brother and dad and cousins. Like there is a connection there please tell me you get it I will cry its three am now im almost 2k deep like.
Cameron, though, is not just a regular red, she is a Newblood and a  silencer at that.
So how does she fight against her oppressors? She silences them, quite literally takes away their power. And isn’t that an apt metaphor for this all?
Okay i'm going the fuck to sleep. Thanks for making it this far. Here’s a freshly baked cookie (imagine a cookie here)

I thinking about the alternate RQ ending with the time travel and stuff cause!!! Im so curious!!!
Like honestly I think what would've sucked about that version of the story the most would literally be we would likely only have known a little bit about the version of the war they lost. I feel like it could been so interesting seeing how the Guard lost the war, but Evangeline is still freed from her family and Cal ends up dead by the end of it. The line, "Maybe Cal won't lose his mind in this timeline," IS SO SJHFKSJFKSHF Cause like WHY did he lose his mind? Was it because he lost his throne and just couldn't cope? Was it losing his father AND brother in rapid succession? Not even mentioning that we don't know shit about Maven's plot line in this version. Considering Cal is dead that makes him next in line and the rightful heir to the throne so I assume he gained all of Cal's Nortan allies upon his death. I wonder if even Anabel went to advise him because he is the only living descendent she has left. Like thinking about it, I bet Cal's death is what really lost them the war in Norta because he was the main reason the Guard had the support of the Samos' and the other Nortan High Houses. They were all running on the belief that Cal was the rightful heir so when he dies and Maven becomes the heir, they all abandoned the Guard. Love him or hate him, Cal's existence is a huge reason the Guard was able to accomplish so much like woah

In the swap Au since Mare and the others are silvers instead of reds, here’s what I’ve been thinking:
(Mare’s grandparents, while not mentioned in canon, in this Au will be included because their background are needed)
(Maternal grandparents former-FORMER rulers of Norta)
• Maternal Grandmother: Silk
• Maternal Grandfather: Storm
• Paternal Grandmother: Oblivion
• Paternal Grandfather: Strongarm
• Daniel Barrow (former king): Oblivion
• Ruth Barrow (former queen): Storm
• Bree Barrow: Strongarm (inherited from paternal grandfather)
• Tramy Barrow: Oblivion
• Shade Barrow: Silk (inherited from maternal grandmother)
• Mare Barrow: Storm/Mimic mutation (her storm abilities are more intensified bc of a mutation, explaining her manipulation and creation of lightning)
• Gisa Barrow: Oblivion
Norta is the Country of Storm because of their storm lineage. They’re known for their weather obviously, and usage of lighting storms to easily produce power and technology for the nation if need be.
• Kilorn Warren: Nymph
