keep thinking now about the idea of the ancient greek stage building as a doorway into death, which is separated from the stage (the space of the living) by the screen of the skene. cassandra calls it as much ("the gates of hades") when she enters the house of atreus. by convention characters cannot die on stage but must exit, usually into the skene, to be killed. cassandra's just extra explicit about it because of her foresight, but every entry into the stage building is a step into death. and then some people come back out of it!!!

#polymestor goes with his sons into death but then is dragged back... #killers like clytemnestra and orestes take their victims into death and leave them there #the origin point of these thoughts is actually oedipus at colonus #but VERY much hecuba and all three electra plays and the classic sophoclean *she exits silently into the house to kill herself* #also the way phaedra and hippolytus invert each other in death and directionality #it'd be interesting to do antigone with a setting switch during the choral ode where she does her own lament #so that the skene becomes the cave where she's imprisoned and then turns back into the palace for the last scene #mine #bodycostume #sorta. i think stage space plays into this somehow

by the way the most annoyingly pedantic thing i've wanted to say all day is "antigone wasn't written by an old dead white guy it's actually very relevant that sophocles was fairly young when he wrote it"

#mod felix #tragedy poll #although 'old' as in 'ancient' still applies #but like i feel like the visual for any ancient writer is like. a visibly old person #but if you read antigone and you think about how old sophocles was when he wrote it (in his 20's i think) #and then you read oedipus at colonus and you think about how old sophocles was when he wrote THAT (around 90 i believe) #well. it is an interesting line of thought #i'm not sure 'white' applies here either but i'm not confident enough in my understanding to get into that

#the bacchae and the oresteia are the two most common foundations for how people think about tragedy #but the book i just finished talked about tragedy in a way that clearly owed more to the persians than it was letting on #and also more obviously centered ajax #the other book i finished recently built its entire theory of tragedy around the trachiniai and hippolytus (and the bacchae) #the book i read in december i think centered ajax and hippolytus and oedipus at colonus (as well as the bacchae and oresteia) #oh and obviously aristotle uses oedipus rex as his model #mine
