‘Sometimes, a girl or boy would ask him about his sudden changes of mood, why he could be charming one minute and distasteful the next. His reply was always the same, if he bothered to reply. The trouble was that John had more than his fair share of hard luck. We all knew that life wasn’t really fair, but at least we pretended it wasn’t. The world played dirty tricks on us too, but we accepted this and looked at life opportunistically. We also knew that we had a fair share of good fun and was grateful for it. With John it was different as I said, he was unlucky. Given the breaks that other people had he would have been alright. As it was he brooded trying to find the answer. He was born old. He’d dried up before his time. He wilted, because he knew that someday he would wilt anyhow. 

A brilliant medical friend of mine had secretly psychoanalysed him, and stated quite emphatically that he was nuts. He was obviously suffering from nervous tension and probably high blood pressure, this left him suffering from dizziness and headaches. We knew that for a fact, often when he stood up from sitting he complained of a black-out and tremendous headaches. This was often the cause of hindrance because he couldn’t always join in the activities of the rest of us, and I’m sure he felt slightly bitter about it. My friend went on to say that a person like John had both emotional and physical symptoms. He had anxiety accompanied by nervous tension, this ranged from irrational fear to chronic delirium or schizophrenia. 

Later when I questioned my friend he said that probably all these things were already part of his physical and mental make-up at birth. This wasn’t unusual as we all have a certain amount. From general observation of John’s behaviour, he came to the conclusion that he had spent most of his life with his back against the wall and probably borne the brunt of all the domestic problems at home. All in all he was emotionally unbalanced.’

I've always felt uncomfortable having to use other people's software to make music. However limitless sequencers, audio editors, and plug-ins claim to be, you still find yourself being forced, however subtlely, to work in certain ways. My copy of Emagic Logic insists on looping the first four bars whenever it can (although it's good software in lots of ways)… With Max/MSP I finally got to think about sound and MIDI, and their manipulation, in a much purer way… I felt that all direct contact with computers had been taken away from me, until I found Max/MSP.

Max/MSP… suits my chaotic, wire-filled constructions. Lots have half-finished ideas embedded in them, which aren't used, and they've a tendency to crash during concerts. But I love it all: I could fill pages with obsessive stuff about Max/MSP. I've even started lurking in chat rooms, and idolizing shadowy figures like jhno and Karlheinz Essl.
