Acrylics: Why They Shine Above Other Art Mediums
So far in this series, we have looked at the art medium of pastels here. The History of Acrylics Now let’s explore using acrylics as a painting medium. First, let’s talk briefly about the history of acrylic paint.  It was originally created in 1934 in the hopes of finding a cheaper and safer way to apply paint to cars, but it was not until 1940, however, that the paint we know today was actually…

finally, artvsartist2023 it wasn’t as bad as it could be
thanks to all who made it through the whole year with me.
I was hardworking enough, though hesitated on some cross-media projects that I’d had in mind for a while. hope I’ll be better!

can you apply acrylic paint over oil paint - Quick guide
Most of the artists start with acrylic because it is beginner's friendly. Later, when they come to know about the qualities of textures, they usually switch to oil painting to make it more professional. But when they enter oil painting, see more.
Working with oil and acrylic paint is fun and amazing for an artist. Both these techniques are different from each other in terms of detailing, drying and many more. You must have a same thinking to mix both of them to get the properties of both of them to enhance your paintings. Well, this blog article has been written to help you weather you can paint acrylic over oil or oil over acrylic? This…

I think it’d be soooo funny if Edgeworth literally had Zero artistic knowledge outside of like. The basics. He recognises some famous paintings and artists but different styles??? Actual history and fun facts??? Oil vs Acrylic vs Water??? Absolute nothing going on up there. Phoenix, however, thinks that Of Course Miles Knows These Things Just Look At Him and so he rants a lot about very specific artistic takes and opinions to Edgeworth and Edgeworth is just standing there with a pained smile nodding along and silently panicking because he has no idea what the fuck Phoenix is talking about

So what's your LEAST favorite pigment?
oooooh... let me see.
i don't think i have any one particular pigment that i dislike ALL of the time—watercolor can be temperamental, and the difference between using a transparent vs opaque color really can change the entire experience. they even dry differently, depending on what color you're using and with what materials. i can't really speak to oils or acrylics though since i've only used those in passing. (i do want to get into oils at some point... it's a gorgeous medium.)
if i absolutely had to pin down a specific pigment or pigment type that i don't particularly enjoy using myself, it... miiight be the cadmiums? yellow, red, orange, it doesn't matter. i know a lot of artists love them to death and they're even a staple on a lot of palettes, but the opacity and toxicity of them just puts them lower down on the list of the pigments i would usually reach for. (as long as you aren't eating them or inhaling the pigment itself handling cadmiums is usually okay-ish, but i prefer to err on the side of caution.)
that's not to say that i outright hate them, i've used them once or twice. but if i have an alternative to cadmium red (pr108) on hand like pyrol red (pr254) or something, i'd rather reach for that. especially since it can make cleaner mixes! (colors that are really opaque tend to get muddy easier, which is also the reason people hear 'don't mix with white, just dilute it' all the time. pyrol red is still opaque, but yk.)
for a while, cadmiums and the like were the only way you could get really true, lightfast and vibrant colors of whatever category they occupied, but there are so many other alternatives now that i find fun to explore and more comfortable to work with.
that said, it makes more sense in general to just play it by ear and see what colors speak to you. pr206 isn't exactly a perfect all-purpose mixing red, but that doesn't stop it from being one of my favorite colors of all time lol. and warmer reds do have a much smaller selection than cooler toned reds do!
(also, not a huge fan of colors that are incredibly hard to rewet, like true viridian (pg18) or potters pink (pr233) even if i do find their shades delicately pretty and really unique. working with them can be frustrating if you aren't using them directly from the tube. some brands are better about that than others though! and both of those are kind of bad examples anyway bc i think they're gorgeous when allowed to granulate on cold or rough press paper, in mixes or on their own.
ultramarine blue (pb29) sometimes has a similar issue actually, but the color is so intense that it remains a staple for me anyway lol. sucker for certain classics ig.)

do you have any painting tips for a mediocre painter
depends on what kind of paint you're working with lol! i tend to work with either acrylic or traditional gouache (last painting i posted was gouache!) but i'm a known hater of oils and watercolor lol. gouache is probably my favorite paint medium because it's pretty versatile and easy to use imo! but acrylics are significantly cheaper. there's not a lot of difference in my technique when painting w acryls vs gouache actually so i can just give you some general tips ig?
have a decently large jar of water on hand, even if you're working with acrylics. clean your brush CONSTANTLY, even when you feel like you don't need to. if you're working with high-quality heavy body acrylics (which i recommend, they're more expensive than the cheap craft store brands but they're WAY better quality. i use liquitex heavy body acrylics) the pigment is a lot more saturated within the paint, but that also means that the paint is a lot thicker and won't lay smooth unless you have some water on your brush. (note: your brush shouldn't be SATURATED with water because that will effect the opacity of your paint, but it should never be bone-dry either!) wetting your brush also helps your bristles stick together and keeps your lines looking smooth!
for something like gouache, i usually start with a watered-down underpainting. this isn't as necessary with acrylics, but can still be helpful. Gouache isn't perfectly opaque, and if you're using traditional gouache it's water-based and will merge slightly with the colors below it when wet. a single-color underpainting can help unify your colors this way, and it's really easy to do! just pick a color (i usually go for a dark blue or pink, but it depends on the colors of your piece) and water it down until it's about watercolor consistency, and then just brush it over the entire piece!
as for brushes, i have 3-4 brushes that i normally use: a hard chisel tip brush, a large soft round brush, a smaller soft round brush, and a script liner brush. the chisel tip is good for blocking in big details early on because it allows you to cover big areas but still has the potential for detail. the large soft round brush is mostly for underpaintings but i will occasionally use it for larger areas on bigger pieces. the smaller round brush is what i use to get most of the details in. it's got about a 4mm diameter and still comes to a nice point at the end so it's useful for a lot of different things! for really tiny details, that's where the script liner comes in. this brush has about a 2mm diameter with 1cm long bristles, so when used properly it gives you a very thin line with a lot of control. this brush was probably the hardest to learn how to use but it's really the mvp whenever i work with gouache lol!
other than that all i can say is practice! learn the properties of your chosen medium--how it blends, how it dries, whether it can be reactivated, how it mixes, etc, and use what you learn to your advantage! i spent a large portion of my high school years taking traditional art classes where we painted a TON and my skillset definitely improved because of that practice alone!

@czigonas wanted to see me answer those artist questions and I did them all so it’ll be under the cut
1. Art programs you have but don’t use?
As of rn I cannot draw on my laptop/tablet so technically paint tool SAI and photoshop(idk what version). But I guess I hadn’t used photoshop for /years/ back before my drawing hiatus. Sorry but SAI is so much nicer to look at and to use, for me personally.
2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left, right, or forward?
I flip flop my canvas a ton to a) look at it for wonkiness and b) to get specific lines in a direction that feels good, but the actual act of drawing I typically like to have them looking left cause most the the lines flow from top right to bottom left which is nicer to do since I use my right hand to draw even tho I am ambidextrous.
3. What ideas come from when you were little?
This question confuses me on what it’s actually asking soooo? When I was like 12 I had to write a story for school so I did a story about a plane crash in which the survivor came face to face to a rat/bat/cat/dog creature thing? I’ve always wanted to redraw the creature, idk if I have the original drawing I did and I don’t feel up to digging to see if I kept it during all my moves.
4. Fave character/subject that’s a bitch to draw?
My favorite animal color patterns aka brindle, merle ,roan, spots/stripes. So time consuming. In terms of shape, human faces for sure.
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself?
Before hiatus, probably 90% /shared/. Currently, probably 75% /posted/cause I can’t post the porn to tumblr lmaoooo but I have shared them with like half a dozen friends.
6. Anything that might inspire you subconsciously?
I’m sure there’s a ton but if it’s subconsciously then how would I consciously know?🤔 ok serious answer, probably every single 2D animated movie or show I’ve ever seen, and all the various artists I follow. I mean, there’s parts of my style I can pinpoint you to what it’s inspired by.
7. A medium of art you don’t work in but appreciate?
I’ve never /seriously/ tried oil paint, acrylic paint, or pastels but that shit always looks so good. Also watercolor even though i have tried and enjoyed using watercolors but I am far far faaarrr from being proficient in them. Non drawing wise, I fucking love dioramas, especially those that are then filled in(?) with acrylic(?). I watch a lot of those videos on YouTube.
8. What’s an old project idea you’ve lost interest in?
Most of my old animal ocs I had in the same universe in my mind and had a comic planned that I never got around to. I still love and wanna revisit those ocs. But also my dragon age ocs who I’ve SERIOUSLY BEEN CONSIDERING drawing in @soaps-hoe-141 universe 👀
9. What are your file name conventions?
Before hiatus/ on my laptop, subject or character and whatever was happening in the pic. Now using procreate on my iPad? I don’t think I’ve named a single one lol.
10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw?
Nothing, no clothes, nude, nakedness please and thank you. lol but I guess I do sorta enjoy figuring out clothing in general, folds and shit, getting that practice in. Like how it hangs and creases in poses since I’m not used to drawing it.
11. Do you listen to anything while drawing?
I don’t usually listen to /only/ music while drawing, I much prefer having a favorite movie playing in the background and/or a show I enjoy rewatching/am actively watching. I also watch a lot of gamer YouTubers I put on as background noise/short watch breaks that their voice is just soothing to me even if I’m not /watching/.
12. Easiest part of the body to draw?
I’m not sure… maybe boobs/pecs for humanoids. General body shape for animals?
13. A creator you admire but whose work isn’t your thing?
Honestly can’t think of a single one. I mean, plenty of artists do work(or with a medium) that I can’t or don’t want to do/use personally but I read the question of “isn’t your thing” as “subject you don’t enjoy”. If that’s correct, then idk what to tell you. I don’t follow or remember people who majority does things I can’t enjoy on some level.
14. Any fave motifs?
Quite a lot of religious imagery I guess ex. Circles around a persons head. Less serious answer is drawing characters in meme formats lol
15. Where do you draw?
Please don’t tell any physical therapists I live like this… on my back on my couch with my head on the arm rest while holding my iPad propped up on my chest like 8 inches away from my face lmao
Tumblr media
16. Something you are good at but don’t really have fun doing?
Idk???? I do shit for my own enjoyment so I’m not sure? Maybe perhaps backgrounds? Like I could do something decent if i wanted to but I’m not into it so I usually just don’t?
17. Do you eat or drink while drawing?
I take breaks… but while actively drawing? I often drink aka let the horny demons out while I enjoy whiskey lol.
18. An estimate of how much art supplies you’ve broken?
Broken broken? Next to fucking none? some charcoal sticks but otherwise…. None… I majority do digital art so really nothing to break there lol
19. Fave inanimate objects to draw?
Idk? I like doing life charcoal drawings? Of whatever, but particularly statues if that counts? I usually have living beings as my subjects.
20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy?
Ok, I hate this question, cause we are all good at different things. Maybe it’s just most of those I follow have different strengths than me???? But I guess if I had to pick, recreating from life(or picture) is a lot easier for me than some others(like making it life like/very accurate).
21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways?
Yooo, anything I’ve reblogged honestly. Love everyone.
22. What physical exercises do you do before drawing?
Absolutely none, again don’t let the pros know cause damn. But I will do stretches or take breaks as needed.
23. Do you use different layer modes?
Absolutely. Mostly for lighting and shading but yes, if I’m doing digital imma take advantage of it.
24. Do your references include stock images?
Yes? I don’t really understand what it’s asking?
25. Something your art has been compared to that you were not inspired by?
Idk? I don’t usually get feedback of that sort.
26. What’s a piece that’s viewed a wildly different interpretation from what you intended?
Again idk? I guess my shit is straight forward?
27. Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff?
Almost never, again don’t let the pros know lol I do sometimes jump between pieces or start a new sketch before going to something farther along.
28. Any art events you have participated in, like zines?
Nope, wanted to and have tried before but I tend to NOT do something if I feel pressured to do it.
29. Media you love but doesn’t inspire you artistically?
Again I feel like this is a weird question or maybe it’s just my understanding of it but I can feel inspiration from all sort of artist shit even if it’s something I’ll never do(ex making a crochet animal or dioramas). I guess I can feel inspired to create from other creators even if it’s not direct inspiration/subject/medium.
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated?
Underrated as in no one has seen aside from a few people irl would be my colored pencil pieces I did during afternoon naps when I worked at a daycare a few years ago.

I still don't understand color theory, like can we draw without color theory? Thanks Caper
you totally can!! like, greyscale exists. if you struggle with colour theory, focus on tone and values instead. colour can be important but if your values are messed up then no matter what colour you have it can look messy.
try doing some greyscale art, focus on light vs dark, do high contrast studies of still life or the body.
Once you feel confident in that you can move onto colour. (:
If you want to get better at colour theory itself tho I recommend looking at art you LOVE, take a section and do a study of it. my fav artist for this was Lucien Freud back in highschool; the way he blocks out colours is really facinating. I did soooooo many acrylic/ oil pastel studies of his works.
another thing that helps is mood boards! take moodboards of art you like/vibes you want to convey and think about what you want to take from each piece, make notes, take swatches/make gradients.
you will get better if you try, I believe in you ♥

Y'know I know ask games are for people to, y'know, send in asks. But I don't see people often just. Fill it all out themselves. Fuck it I'll help out the shy people.
SO ASK GAME BELOW 'READMORE' LET'S GO
1. Art programs you have but don't use: MS Paint, Blender, I used to have WAY more like this one painting [like actual paint] program.
2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even): Left is easiest, Right is in the middle, and forward is the hardest of those three for me.
3. What ideas come from when you were little: I was fascinated by G/T from like. 3 years old. I blame Super Mario Land 2 LMAO
4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw: Handheld, perspective, monsters/creatures, and massive scale
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself: Uhhh probably about 50/50? A lot of things I draw are spoilers, shitposts, and other study art I don't bother sharing.
6. Anything that might inspire you subconsciously (i.e. this horse wasn't supposed to look like the Last Unicorn but I see it): Not that I can think of? My art doesn't get analyzed super often. I think people think I study anime more than I do.
7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate: Charcoal, watercolors, sculpture, oil pastels, acrylic, copic markers
8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in: Originally I was going to make an AMV with my two characters, Nonny and Felicia, to the song 'shut up and dance with me'. These two aren't active OCs anymore, and the project was WAY too ambitious for my skill level 9 years ago lmao.
9. What are your file name conventions: 1: Name of song I listened to on loop while drawing. 2: An inside joke. 3: Literal rep of what's on the canvas like 'Hema doodles Aug 2023'.
10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw: Body suits, capes, scarves
11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what: TONS. My fave lyrical music, videogame soundtracks, sometimes just ambiance if I'm overwhelmed. Usually tho it's the same song on loop till I get the inspired piece out of my system.
12. Easiest part of body to draw: Eyes!
13. A creator who you admire but whose work isn't your thing: A lot of NSFW artists who I won't list here LMAO. I don't go to that school, but their art skills are top-notch.
14. Any favorite motifs: Mirrors, doppelgangers, leaving 1 eye absent for emotional effect, feathers/wings, falling, sinking into water, eyes, dark palettes with bright accents/light sources, glowing eyes, flowing hair, size difference/scale, fucked up version of self vs real version
15. *Where* do you draw (don't drop your ip address this just means do you doodle at a park or smth): Starbucks, home, parks if I'm feelin spicy, anywhere I take my tablet for the day.
16. Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing: A lot of my niche/kink stuff tends to get pretty dredge-y for me. I may be good at it, but it's not where my passion lies. That's in animation, fantasy, dramatic stuff, storytelling, etc.
17. Do you eat/drink when drawing? if so, what: Water or Snapple for the drink, milk if it's bedtime so I can settle down, and then usually the snacks are just whatever my lunch is for the day since we don't have a table.
18. An estimate of how much art supplies you've broken: Not many! Less than $100 I'd say. I'm very careful with my supplies, and I don't believe I've ever broken a tablet. The worst I've done was I busted 1 or 2 cheap tablet pens with stupidity.
19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.): Definitely nature. Tree trunks and swirls therein, flowers, grass.
20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy: Humans! Not that it's an 'everyone' thing, I just run in some furry circles where human artists are a rarity. Eyes, too. Some people find expressions rly hard.
21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways: Uhhh man damn, I don't follow a lot of art styles that aren't something I took inspo from? But I guess Wolf Walkers is my biggest one.
22. What physical exercises do you do before drawing, if any: Sooometimes I stretch, but I don't do it nearly often enough.
23. Do you use different layer modes: Yep! My most common ones are Multiply, Glow Dodge, Add, Add Glow, Overlay, Pin Light, and Color.
24. Do your references include stock images: Absolutely! Reference is important.
25. Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by: Not much! Most of my inspirations are pretty clear-cut and strong. Avatar, SU, Disney, Dreamworks, FMA, some Warner Brothers' movies, etc.
26. What's a piece that got a wildly different interpretation from what you intended: God, so, the G/T gif of mine that makes the rounds a lot? The one where VT finds someone small and it's their POV and he helps them and puts them in his shirt pocket??? Most people were completely normal about that post. But then there's one chuckle-head who was calling it pocket-vore, and I wanted to scream. I even chastised them like 'hey uh, no. That's not what this is.' and they argued back with 'well it's up to the eye of the beholder more than your opinion.' and I was like 'UH NO. I MADE THIS. MY OPINION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR WEIRD ONE???' I've also RAAARELY had people call my characters underaged when they're all well over 21, so those are always gross/wild LMAO.
27. Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff? If so, what is it you draw to warm up with: Sometimes! I usually do an anatomy study, brush stroke warm-ups, or just doodle something personal first.
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines): I think Multi Animator Projects [MAPS] would count here! I was part of Starclan's Chosen, Change Your Mind [Brambleclaw], Levitating, Family of Me [fallenleaves], Goosebumps Warriors MAP, Pay No Mind MEP, LA Devotee [never finished], White Rabbit, and Fear Garden! Among others :>
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically: Not much! Pretty much everything I love inspires me artistically. I guess some anime styles?
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated: Pretty much any of my animations. But I only feel that way cuz they take THE MOST dedication and work time. Also kiiiinda my writing? But a lot of people have trouble getting people to respond to literature, so.

The Pros and Cons of Working with Acrylic Paint
Acrylic paint was first developed in the 1950s as house paint and was made commercially available in the 1960s as artist-grade paint. And since then, it has become the primary art material for many contemporary artists.
Compared to oil paint and watercolour, acrylic paint is a recent discovery in art. Its versatile nature, vibrancy and stability have overtaken the art world. As more artists take advantage of the broader perspective of acrylic paint, more acrylic paint products hit the market.
Tumblr media
Want to learn more about acrylic paint? Here we will tell what it is, its pros and cons.
WHAT IS ACRYLIC PAINT?
Acrylic paint is paint made from pigments suspended in an acrylic emulsion. It is water soluble and fast drying and becomes water-resistant after drying.
Acrylic paint is highly versatile. Depending on how much the paint has been diluted with water, or modified with acrylic gels, mediums, or pastes, a finished acrylic painting may resemble a watercolour, a gouache, or an oil painting. It may also have unique characteristics that are not obtainable with other media.
WHAT MAKES ACRYLIC PAINT DIFFERENT?
Previously, artists used to mix their paints to get the colours and textures they wanted. They could control the ingredients, like fillers, in their paints. However, it could be more practical to mix it by hand with acrylic paint. That's because it dries quickly and has other technical issues. Instead, artists buy ready-to-use acrylic paint, which they can modify using acrylic mediums or water.
Acrylic mediums offer more options compared to watercolour and oil paints. Acrylics can stick to many different surfaces, and mediums can be used to change how they bind to those surfaces. Acrylics can be used on paper, canvas, and various materials like hobby models (trains, cars, houses).
TRADITIONAL VS MODERN ACRYLIC PAINT
Even though acrylic paint is relatively new to the art world, there are still paints referred to as 'traditional' acrylic paint and 'modern' acrylic paint. Traditional acrylic paints are fast-drying paints that have been around for the past five decades and are made from brands such as Liquitex, Winsor & Newton, Golden and Grumbacher. Modern acrylic paints do not dry as quickly and can be reactivated after drying, and are made from brands such as Dirums and Chroma.
PROS AND CONS OF TRADITIONAL ACRYLIC PAINT
Toxicity level
Advantage: Acrylic paints are water-based, meaning they can be thinned with water (no toxic spirits are needed). In addition, wet paint can be cleaned using only soap and water.
Disadvantages: The pigments in acrylic paint can contain toxins, as can those in some oil paints. Additional toxins can be found in acrylics that use 'retardants' to slow drying time.
Drying time
Advantage: Traditional acrylic paints dry fast, so there's no need to wait between painting sessions for layers to dry. The paintings are dry enough to be shipped safely within a day or two.
Disadvantages: Because acrylic paints dry quickly, they cannot be mixed easily to create the 'wet in wet' technique popular with oil paints. For this reason, a finished acrylic painting may look more tacky than a finished oil painting.
Reactivation
Benefits: Unlike watercolours (another water-based paint), once traditional acrylics dry, they are mounted on a support for a longer shelf life. This makes it easier to paint new layers on top of the previous ones.
Disadvantage: It cannot be removed or changed once the paint is dry.
DURABILITY
Benefits: Acrylic paints have proven to be more flexible than oil paints. There's no need to follow the fat over-lean rule with acrylics so they don't break.
Disadvantages: We've only had acrylic paints for about 50 years, so we can't comment on how long they'll last.

Consider the advantages and disadvantages of acrylic paint
Pros
It is versatile. You can paint on any surface that is oil and wax free. This includes canvas, wood, paper, rocks, glass, fabric, cardboard, metal and plastic. With the proper preparation, you can use acrylic paint on almost anything.
It dries quickly. With this, you can complete your project faster.
It is soluble in water. You can wash it off with your hands and brush (while they're still wet) with soap and water without needing paint thinner.
It is less toxic and much safer around children and pets.
It is more economical.
It's flexible. You can mix acrylics with many different mediums to get different textures, adhere characteristics, or change the drying time.
It is durable. As far as we know, acrylics are flexible and will not break, peel or yellow.
It's alive.
It is waterproof when dry.
Cons
It gets darker when it dries, so you won't necessarily get the exact colour you paint with.
It's also fast-drying, which means you'll have to work quickly.
Once dry, it is difficult to remove once dry with a brush, fingernail or cloth. It's best to have a water container when you paint to keep the brushes wet, so they're easier to clean. You should also wear protective clothing.
Once dry, it is difficult to remove with fingernails or clothing.
It is considered by some art galleries and collectors to be 'not as valuable' as compared to other paint mediums.
