ok RIP i am very late but without further ado let's get it, i'm ines and this is kim noeul who tbh was a poor, easily forgettable girl in hs and now is one of the preeminent young novelists in south korea! under the cut here i'll get into a little more but pls like this and i'll def hit u up for plotting!

now onto like bg stuff so she's born to two teenaged parents right

and what's wild is her parents genuinely really love each other and like get married and noeul has a little sister who's like 9 now which is crazy

also bc a 16 year old girl named her like her actual name is noelle not noeul but like she's let everyone just assume it's noeul bc it's easier than explaning that her mom thought noelle would be a trendy name

but anyways having two teenaged parents doesn't like set you up the best financially so she lived with her parents and grandparents for a while when she was growing up and evenutally her parents moved out of her paternal grandparents place only to be living in a shitty half basement apartment with noeul bc like again how far can two high school grads from poor families with a whole ass child get in seoul

and tbh like bro noeul loves her parents but she DEF kinda resented them for being poor growing up and like so combined with this hatred of her situation paired with being a smart girl with a lot of drive she worked REALLY hard to get into shinhwa

only kinda realized that getting into shinhwa didn't mean a ton in terms of social standing bc u know she's still fucking broke and tbh rather than bullied i don't imagine people particularly even took that much notice of her bc she kept to herself a lot with like insecurity bc she was v obviously poorer than everyone and stuff and probs had a few friends but not a lot

tho lmao wildly and fully relating to her secret despite being this smart girl who worked hard to get her scholarship and school was v important to her she got pregnant right at the tale end of her last year at shinhwa and actually had to delay going to college the following year bc u know PREGNANCY

and there's like a lot of stigma that comes with being a single mother in korea and shit so like tbh did she want to keep her daughter? yes of course but like she didn't have the financials bc atp it's her, her parents, and her little sister living in a shitty little apartment and she literally shares a room with a 3 year old at the time, and then like she wants to go and better her life and stuff and it's hard to do when everyone judges you for being a single mom and it's not fair on the child so she makes the hard choice to give up her daughter for adoption and then go back to school

and like ok she goes to ewha womans and she does well there too bc again very determined to do well in life and all but like i think giving her daughter up fr had a sense of guilt, regret, and honestly depression that she never really expected so like she struggled with that and she ended up writing this story about it for a creative writing class and her teacher was like "hold up this is kind of good have u ever considered writing it into something more?"

and with her teacher's help and encouragement she did just that and ended up writing what would become a very popular novel about a young woman who gets pregnant, gives up her child, and navigating life through the tragedy over it. tbh it's kinda in the style of kim jiyoung, born 1982

and even cooler u know later it gets turned into a movie that's scheduled to come out later this year and fr like idk shit turned her whole life around like writing about the biggest misery and regret of her life gave her the money she always craved and a bit of notoriety and everything is cool and all but like on the other side of things people fr think the story is just a novel and are like "wow how did you come up with the concept?" and for obvi reasons like noeul is def more comfortable with letting them thinking it's all fictional

and yeah so ngl life has fr turned around really recently for her and it's really nice but like rip now the dawn of realization is setting in that like... people are gonna expect another novel and how is she supposed to provide that like...

Ok but- and I am saying this with respect for your point of view bc I think you are correct on a wider societal level- I keep seeing this argument of 'There is more m/m fanfic therefore this fandom is lesbiphobic and misogynistic' and it has bothered me for a long time. As a queer girl myself, asexual and somwehere on the aro spectrum, who has many wlw ships and enjoys looking at art for them... I don't enjoy reading wlw or straight fics bc I subconsciously project myself into the relationships too much (this is also why i generally avoid reading straight romance books lol). When I read mlm fic, there's a degree of separation from me that means I can enjoy it without getting anxious about imagining myself in that position.

I'm not trying to be like 'oh woe is me i cant read yuri', im just explaining my own reasons, and trying to get across that other people have their own reasons for what they enjoy- ranging from long winded explanations like mine to 'idk I'm attracted to guys and I like writing about them'. People have preferences, and that comes across in most fandoms, even in heavily female casts like prsk. Like I mentioned, lack of wlw content IS an issue.... when it comes to mainstream media. But when it comes to fanfic... the majority of writers are queer, many are women, hell, some of the most prolific writers of mlm fic I know are lesbians. People have their own reasons for writing what they like, and they do it for FREE. I think it's silly to say a fandom is misogynistic when most of these fandoms are full of queer female writers writing what they want to write.

And again I say this with respect because I do see where you're coming from- instead of saying 'write less mlm', because absolutely one will listen to that.... say 'write more wlw'. Write what you want to see in the world! More fics are always a good thing!! And if you don't want to read about guys, that's what the ao3 filters are for lol.

See, the thing is, i agree with you, but is that really the only reason for A LOT of people?

What im advocating is not for people to write less mlm, is for they to look at themselves and wonder why they like it more, i know a lot of people who claim to like the boys more for this reason or that, then turn around and act completely misogynistic 5 seconds later, some of them in this fandom, even.

Im just saying that in a fandom with way more girls than boys, it makes not much sense how much more content of the boys there is.

The ao3 filters exist, yes, but they dont stop me from having barely any content even on bigger wlw shipps, from rereading the same fics over and over again because that's all I have for days/weeks, months even on the leoni/mmj side of fandom.

Sincerely, I have myself over 50 prsk fics, only one includes mlm and that one is a multi, focused mainly on platonic ships, and is still somehow my most famous fic.

I see your point, really, and I agree with it, but it only comes so far in a fandom like prsk where there's way more girls, or Alien Stage, that my friend got me into and the girls have been canon for so long but the boys have nearly always been more famous, even before they became "canon". As a wlw enjoyer its tiring to see this over and over again in every fandom im in, you know?

Plus, its not just not writing girls, its how the fandom ACTS with them. Saki as just a fodder for Tsukasa angst, Honami might as well not even exist, Mizuki themselves exist only to be a friend to Rui to a lot of people, An and Kohane? They're only backgrounds on Akitouya, that is when An doesn't get in between the ship, of course. Emu can't even be shipped with one of the boys, because she's a child obviously, but she can be shipped with Nene, just leave her to the side its alright.

Its a lot of double standards, and not only "not writing fics", the fics are just a quick way of showing what I mean.

listening to the PS:2 soundtrack again in an attempt to bite the bullet and psyche myself up to watch both films back to back in August(? that's the goal at least, if i get to watch it earlier even better) and i have been stuck on Veera Raja Veera for an hour and a half. i have also figured out my personal ranking for all versions of the song at last and it went about as well as i would have expected. it started to get too long for the f*cking tags tho so i decided to put in this post, we'll see how it goes from here—list is in order from least liked to most liked btw

5. going to start this off by saying i'm so so sorry to Gulzar but it's something about the rhythm for me. the lyrics are lovely but the way they are lining up with the music in the Hindi version,,,,,,, or failing to in certain parts,,,,,, it's not it. it's not it. it does well in the first minute or so and then heads downhill from there, and tbh it's not his fault i think it's just the sheer amount of syllables that they have to fit in compared to the original? and with that in mind it's not going to sound the same, obviously, but what salvages it from being a complete disappointment is the way we got both Shreya Ghoshal and Kavita Krishnamurthy as a duet in this year of our Lord 2023. Kavita, who still sounds the same as she did on the Dil Se soundtrack singing Satrangi Re and the Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam soundtrack and the Devdas soundtrack and the Yaara Dildaara soundtrack and the K3G soundtrack with Bole Chudiyan and Shreya Ghoshal who is a pleasure to listen to on practically everything she touches (Bajirao Mastani and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and that aalap just before her verse with Kavita here i'm looking at you) and— *inhales* *exhales* ok. do appreciate them letting Kavita take the 'चुन चुन चुन चुन / जाली रे जाली चिंगारी' portion in the Hindi translation bc she sounded beautiful there. (she always reminded me of Lata in that regard i think, and for some inexplicable reason i've by extension connected the two of them to Zohra Sehgal in some of her roles)

favorite line — 'दुश्मन पे टूटे जब | बिजलियों का वीर' / 'dushman pe toote jab | bijilyon ka vaar'. this is one of those times where the rhythm works in their favor and works well, and it leads perfectly into the rest of the verse imo. also @ that one guy going 'योद्धा~~' / 'yodhaa~~' at the very end of the song ty for your service

3. in contrast to the rhythm problems of the Hindi the Kannada recording is very smooth? i don't know if that makes sense as someone who doesn't speak the language but it's like water. like water in a stream just one after another going over the stones in the riverbed as it passes or the waves lapping against the side of the ship or the gentle sound wind chimes make when they hit against each other in the lightest breeze—the phrasing doesn't feel forced (ty Jayant Kaikini sir) and the syllables match the music as well as the original. ofc Rakshita Suresh and Sivasri Skandaprasad have a part to play with their solos in this sounding as good as it does, despite its ranking on my list (which will be explained in the next entry), and while i expected nothing less from Rakshita after Kirunage, this is the first i'm hearing from Sivasri and she blew me away. i had to listen to it several times to be able to tell them apart, and i might still be wrong bc their voice color is very, very similar, but they took what Rahman gave them and made it their own. (is it Rakshita that starts and Sivasri that continues? i'm thinking that it alternates between them with Sivasri ending that portion)

favorite line — 'ಮಳೆಗರೆವಾಗ ಬಾಣ | ಅಡಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಣಾ' / 'malegarevaaga baana | adagalu elli thaana'. this is where the river analysis stands out to me bc this feels like putting pebbles said river into a tumbler and rolling them over and over until they come out smooth and polished and just. right. (i am using the word smooth a lot to talk about the Kannada version sksksksk but can you blame me)

3. technically Malayalam and Kannada tie for third place on here (there is no fourth place. there is 4.75th place rounded up to fifth place and that belongs to the Hindi entry as previously stated) but Malayalam has the slightest edge for me. in terms of sound/pronunciation it's the closest to the original—i know most scholars believe that Malayalam descended from Tamil and split early on, so that might have something to do with it, but it sounds like a perfect cross between the flow of Kannada and the strength of the Tamil and ugh. pair that with Srinivas featuring and Shweta Mohan taking on that solo (by herself!!! and eating that sh*t like it was a duet!!!) and Rafeeq Ahamed as the lyricist and i play it almost as often as i play the original. (i was almost half expecting to hear the extension at the end in this version, that's how good it was)

favorite line — 'കടലിൽ ചുഴലി പോലെ | തവ നൗക കളിരമ്പി' / 'kadalil chuzhali pole | thava noukakalirambi'. i am in love with what Shweta does here, especially with the latter half of the line ('... നൗക കളിരമ്പി' / 'noukakalirambi') since she just heads straight into the 'വൻകടൽ...' and for some reason that is so auditorily pleasing to me. i don't have any rational thoughts behind that that's just how it is. her aalap before her verse is also breathier/softer than Shreya's if that makes sense but it fits her perfectly

2. Telugu. holy f*ck, Telugu. you put Shankar Mahadevan (i don't think i've ever heard him sing a bad song. ever. at least not what i've heard) and Chinmayi (Tere Bina???? Mayya Mayya???? Titli???? i'm still not over any of them from her????) in the same song you make every f*cking verse rhyme almost exactly courtesy of Chandrabose if Kannada is the sound of water then Telugu is pure silk and honey and the feel of something melting in your mouth and you expect me to stay alive? the actual f*ck? admittedly i may be biased bc one of my OCs is Telugu and i have been putting Telugu covers from my Bollywood playlist on loop for inspo but uh Rahman what the f*ck. what the f*ck am i supposed to do with that kind of genius

favorite line(s) — 'సమరం శ్రుతించైరా శిఖరం స్పృశించైర' / 'samaram shruthinchaira shikharam spushinchaira' & 'విధిగా తెగించైర | విధినే వదించైర | విలయం దరించైర | విజయం వరించైర' / 'vidhigaa thegincheyraa | vidhine vadhincheyraa | vilayam dharincheyraa | vijayam varincheyraa'. the f*cking alliteration? hello? also the 'veera raja veera' at the end of this version in particular gives me full body chills bc there is someone going up with the harmonization every time there's a new line. i don't know who it is but he's (they're? could be multiple vocals) going up and i am crying shaking throwing up on the floor having a spiritual experience etc etc

and finally 1. the top spot. the place where everything has been leading through this long ass piece that i have put you to suffer through

and ykw Tamil is pretty much self-explanatory i think: we bring Shankar back as we should but this time K.S Chithra (Asoka!!! Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon!!! Bombay and Thoda Thoda from Indira/Priyanka and the live version of Jiya Jale that Rahman did in Dubai!!!) and Harini (also sang for Indira/Priyanka and featured on Varayo Thozhi from Jeans) are with him and Ilango Krishnan's lyrics take over and flatline me on the f*cking operating table. before it flatlines me however i break into goosebumps every time i hear it start, bc lbh it is impossible not to when you have the f*cking vocals coming in like 'காணீரோ? நீர் காண் | சோழ வெற்றி வாள் ஒன்றை காணீரோ? | ஓ அழகிய பூவே! செல்லுதியோ | மலரிடு போ சகி!' if you stay sane during that opening you are a liar get off my feed unfollow and block i don't want you anywhere near me for the next six years or however long it takes Mani Ratnam to make his next masterpiece. no coherent thoughts head empty MV playing on loop he and Rahman own me now they have the copyrights

so I've been thinking about?? trying to write?? a botw byler au, and I was thinking about it before totk so I was thinking of it with the party as the champions, but then totk came out and the sages were there and more relevant and so I was like oh shit maybe this might need to change maybe I should ask other people would they prefer OVERWHELMING TRAGEDY AND ANGST or actual active plot contribution so I ran this poll lmao and realized while running it that I'm actually team angst but um. ok wait this is an unnecessarily long winded way of asking your opinion. you're a fic writer i admire and you like loz so which one do you think is better. angst or plot contribution

first of all i would eat up any loz au. i'm already panting and getting saliva all over this ask answer so sorry abt that. second of all i so aggressively agree w what you said abt the champions in that post you linked and i am so distraught and also upset that someone would ever disrespect them by calling them COWORKERS. third of all i'm going to make a case for both and you can either ask for further input or make a choice from that or ignore me completely 👍 i'm going to put this under a cut bc it is so long:

the thing about botw+the champions that is so just like. (gestures wildly with hands) to me is that you Know the champions but you also Don't. i know botw has received so much (undeserved imo) criticism from the way the story is told through the game -- namely, that it's optional -- but i have always said that i think it's very funny that the people who say this also praise the post-apocalyptic sandbox vibes in the same breath, as if that is not The Exact Reason botw's story is told the way it is, and a story being optional doesn't mean it's not important or impactful, BUT I DIGRESS. the thing w the champions that i love is that once upon a time, these friends meant everything to link, to the point where they literally died for him and zelda and their people and their collective shared kingdom, and he 1. also died and 2. got a second chance where they didn't. there's so much to explore from link's perspective, because he's the one who got the second chance, and then he woke up with no memory of it (a merciful spare from the grief), and then he had to relearn who all of them were, and why he loved them, and grow that love all over again, and then experience that grief in a very complicated way, because on one hand -- he doesn't fully remember everything, and so his grief might not be as impactful, but on the other, he remembers Enough to know that he loved them fiercely. very interesting to explore re: grief and guilt, bc both are very, very complicated! you then also have the juxtaposition of zelda and her guilt and her grief, because she remembers EVERYTHING, and her "failure" was the catalyst for an event so catastrophic it altered hyrule forever (i use failure loosely bc i do not think it was entirely her fault but i digress x2).

from a totk+sages perspective, Yes, you could say the sages have more personality, but that's literally bc we. actually have game time with them? that takes place in the present? lol. i think with the sages and their motivations it's broken down, for me, into three things, unranked: their people, their connection to link, and personal fulfillment. the fact that each of their regions and, essentially, their people, is being impacted by whatever phenomena is happening is enough of a motivation to make them want to be a sage. riju, sidon, and yunobo all have connections to link from the previous game, and tulin knows link well enough to have a baseline connection with him, so obviously that motivates them to want to help him and be a sage. and then there's the fact that they all, to varying degrees, need this for Themselves -- whether it be for glory or self actualization or reassurance or whatever you want to call it. i also like the idea of this being a Second Chance narrative in many regards, because it is a second chance for the imprisoning war but also a second chance for the champions, almost. to be able to rise up together and defeat a common enemy just like their ancestors were destined to do. i think there is also a desperation to totk that botw doesn't have bc botw the ending has already been decided, whereas with totk, you have a chance to save everyone -- especially zelda.

it really honestly depends on what kind of story you want to write. it depends on the messages you want conveyed and what you want byler's focus to be. for me, botw is a zelink getting together narrative (or, least, it sets up for them to -- link literally spends the entire game falling in love w zelda for the second time), whereas totk is an established relationship vibe. i think botw puts byler more center stage with the rest of the party taking more of a backseat role and totk does the opposite. i think it is maybe obvious on which of the 2 games i prefer from what i said but i say go with your gut and evaluate the takeaways you want from this fic. don't go for the angst just bc it's angst and don't go for the easy route just bc it's the easy route. think about what you want this fic to make people feel when they read it and i think the answer might come easily!!

pulitzer is losing money bc the headline fucking sucks and so he’s like, ok business assossiate, token female, and queer coded hairdresser, how can we sell more papers. and when none of them get the answer right, he reveals that the best way to do it is to ✨exploit the children✨ so they raise the newsies’ paper price by ten cents, which is a Lot. and he has the audacity to say that they’ll thank him.

ok we’re back to the newsies nwo and david is trying to sell a pape and he is Not Good At It. so jack grabs it and just fucking lies about the headline and sells the paper. and then les also sells a pape by pretending to be a poor orphan boy and being cute and shit (oh btw hes nine (almost ten) did i mention that?) and then they’re like jack do you wanna come eat with us and our parents? our dad got fired bc he got hit by a car, and this is exposition! adn jack is like oh um no thanks i got a date with a guy (in a totally straight not bisexual way ofc) adn les sees a spooky man and goes IS THAT HIM!? and the answer is nO

so they run away from spooky man and wind up at a theater, and then they exploit the new kid trope to give exposition to the viewers that that was sneider the spider, and he runs a jail for underage kids called the Refuge, and for every kid he nabs, he gets money straight to his pocket. woooo new kid trope

ok so it's the next day and none of the other newsies are showing up to the strike bc brooklyn wants to wait until the manhattan newsies have proven they won't be scared cats. but they still do the strike, and they get the scabs to do it too. and then kathy gets a really nice picture, and then the police show up and fucking demolish them. and they get crutchie and drag him off to the refuge :((( and then jack makes it back to the lodging house and he's so fucking pissed and he sings about santa fe and how he deserves better (he does fyi)

here's me being way too long-winded about how i made that gif:

note: this assumes you use photoshop, and that you already know how to make gifs. i work primarily in timeline, so everything i talk about is specific to that method.

this wasn't super complicated, i don't think? i used @cal-kestis's tutorial on motion blur transitions with timeline to get that shift effect. i didn't make any adjustments of my own, since i liked the end result.

i made the two gifs that i wanted to shift between, and then clipped and blurred according to nik's tutorial. this is what my timeline looks like once i had my clips chunked:

once i had the two gifs in the motion blur transition, i wanted to add something to give it a 'shining' quality, if that makes sense? i used this light leaks video on yt to make that happen!

since the video is an .mp4, i was able to open it up directly in ps, which i always do when i can, since it means to don't have to take screencaps of it. it automatically opens as a smart object and i can get the entire clip so i can move it around in timeline to get a segment that i like over the gif.

i set the video group to 'screen' and added a gradient map with my focus colors (green and yellow) on top of that. i created a clipping mask to clip the gradient map layer to the video group so the gradient map would only be applied to that specific layer. i set the gradient map layer to multiply (i found 'screen' made the whole gif too light).

so there's the gif part (i think i remembered everything?). now on to typography!

'you think i want you as my' and 'of course not' are in quicksand, bold, 10.5pt. 'boyfriend' is a font called pinch my ride, regular, 60pt. i changed the case for 'b', 'r', and 'd' from lower to uppercase bc i just thought it looked better!

in blending options, i added a gradient overlay in my focus colors and set the angle to -90 as i wanted a even lined gradient. i set that gradient overlay to 'hard light' and then set the layer to 'difference'. then (i'm sorry this is so long) i copied that text layer. went into blending options again, deselected the gradient overlay and drop shadow, selected 'stroke' and went with a 1px white stroke set to 'outside'. back in the layers, i set the fill to 0% so only the stroke was visible. once i had the stroke, i shifted that layer down and to the right (five cursor strokes each).

i converted my timeline back to frames (god bless @anyataylorjoy's action for this step) and tadaaaa:

hi andi ok so I was having hadestown byler thoughts again and first of all. whenever I imagined the "death" I figured it would either be an actual death or it would just be will going to the upsidedown bc obviously mike doing everything in his power to get will back from the upsidedown mirrors the orpheus and eurydice thing. but then uh thought about that smoosnoom post with the eurydice quote and the fact that it's put over pictures of possessed will, when he's losing himself and his memories, WHICH IS ANALAGOUS TO HOW DEAD SOULS IN GREEK MYTH SWIM IN THE RIVER LETHE AND LOSE THEIR MEMORIES. so now, is eurydice will dead? in the upsidedown? possessed again? all of the above? idk but the potential just gets cooler the longer I think about it and I had to let you know. anyway slightly different topic but still hadestown byler though, idk what would happen with hades and persephone plotline aksjddkfk. like I generally say "orpheus and eurydice byler" instead of "hadestown byler" unless I'm trying to be quick about it bc hadestown has a very specific interpretation of the characters that I feel doesn't always map perfectly onto byler (for example. personality types don't line up) and I'm more interested in a byler version of the myth itself inspired from any or all iterations of it and not just specifically a hadestown au. but even if you take out the hadestown interpretation of hades and persephone I still don't really know what you do with that. bc the obvious answer for hades here would be henry except a. who is the persephone?? and b. henry doesn't seem like a very sympathetic person anymore, if he ever was, and a big part of the story is that hades sympathizes with the young lovers. like yeah the myth says it's persephone who feels sorry for them and convinces her husband, but a. that still means he's got some modicum of empathy and shit, and b. hades himself is only unwilling to let them leave bc it sets a precedent for letting everyone else leave. not bc he just wants to keep eurydice around. which again is definitely different from henry. so yeah idk what to do there. I'm sorry I just realized how long this ask is I am very long winded

alright rori, let's do this. setting a timer of 45 minutes for myself because like always, i have way too much to say but also i gotta prep a fic to get posted tomorrow LOL.

okay, so like i think i mentioned answering one or two of your other asks, i saw this a couple days ago and didn't have the energy to answer it yet, but i have been thinking about how i'd answer it. and now i know how i'm gonna answer it lol.

first, i'll say, i think your point of this is that there's a difference between solely orpheus/eurydice byler and then hadestown byler because obviously hadestown is more niche and interprets the myth slightly differently. so i'll talk about orpheus/eurydice byler first, then i'll talk about my thoughts on hadestown byler.

my thing is: byler is just orpheus/eurydice coded in general, as we all well know. and i think the more i thought about this, the more i realized that the show itself (at least the byler part of it) can be viewed as its own retelling an interpretation of the orpheus/eurydice myth, just (hopefully) without the tragic ending.

i mean it's right there in front of us in s1, right? we see eurydice/will being taken into this story's version of the underworld—the upside down. then orpheus/mike spends the entire first season trying to get him back. it's missing that obvious point of the "hey, don't turn around when he follows you out, because you'll lose him" but i'll come back to that in a second.

then, in s2, yes! i love what you're saying about how in greek myths, the river lethe leads the deceased person to lose their memories. so that really then is like will's possession, and so, wow. we again are put into this instance where our orpheus has to go after his eurydice and get him back. mike reminds will of who he is and of the love they share between each other.

but still, we're missing the deal orpheus strikes with hades, and its tragic end. except... maybe we're not?

because in both s1 and s2, we see that the way stranger things has its orpheus make it the underworld to save its eurydice is through a new character—through el. in both seasons, it's that friendship mike forges with el that in the end leads to will's rescue. this is more of a stretch than the way byler fits into their orpheus/eurydice roles, but in a way, mike's relationship with el kind of represents that journey out of the underworld and the tragedy the myth ends with.

mike "saves" will in a sense, but also... he loses will too. the key in orpheus and eurydice's demise is the doubt orpheus begins to feel, right? he wonders if he's been tricked, and he makes the fatal mistake of looking behind him, dooming eurydice to her demise and ending the story in a tragedy.

this, in a more metaphorical sense, could be compared to how in s3/s4 we begin to see mike's own self doubt, the decline in his mental health, how he shuts down, and hides behind his relationship with el. mike's looking behind him—his mistake that causes him to lose will—is something he says himself in s4: that he was worrying too much about el and lost will in the process. so, like in the original myth of orpheus and eurydice, it's the very movement and action that are meant to save eurydice that doom the two lovers. with mike and will, it's the very person who saved will and brought him back to mike twice who ultimately then comes in between them.

(btw, it's not el's fault, obvs. she's not really included in this metaphor/comparison because she doesn't really fit into the myth in a sense, but you know i love my girl and this whole mess isn't her fault either lol. there's probably something there that could be talked about with how el represents the "path out of the underworld" that st's hades aka vecna/henry/one offers to our orpheus. something that would dive more into the messy history of el and henry and the mentoring role he sort of played in her life until they broke off and like. nearly killed each other. but again, that's just an aside.)

anyways, where we then converge from the orpheus/eurydice myth is that when orpheus loses eurydice, he can never get the chance to get her back again. the story ends, and eurydice is dead. orpheus is alone. but as we all see at the end of s4, we see our orpheus and eurydice get a second chance. maybe mike did feel like he lost will because of his relationship with el. he did "turn around" in a sense. but by the ending scene in the cabin, i believe mike knows his priorities again. he makes that promise to will that they'll figure out how to defeat vecna together. they'll stop him together. so if this can be read as an orpheus/eurydice retelling, the ending will be different for them. :)

okay, now on to my hadestown thoughts!

these are all just my personal thoughts about how i might go about writing a hadestown byler fic, because i think for it to be an au of sorts, i'd want to have it set in that little world hadestown has built. as i just rambled about above, i think st's canon can almost be read as an orpheus/eurydice retelling itself, so if i wanted to write about it and dig deeper into the myth, this is the interpretation i personally would go with because i just love hadestown lol.

i mean, you know me and how i write rori, so i'd end up pulling bits and pieces i like from the material and then tweaking as i go. so if i ever wrote this, it would be hadestown (kind of), stranger things (kind of), and orpheus/eurydice (kind of) lol. first off, i like the hadestown setting. i like the concept of it not quite being a death, i like the way it frames a world that is struggling because of others' greed, and i like that within it, there's also a political statement showing how there's power in people standing up against oppressors.

we know that the demeanors of the orpheus/eurydice in hadestown don't line up to mike and will's characters. but what i like about hadestown is that eurydice gets a lot more agency in the story here. she makes that decision to go to hadestown, and unfortunately, it's made in desperation and also fear. but then, when we meet them again in the second act, we see that eurydice is also the primary encourager to orpheus. that they can make it out of here. that she believes in him to show her the way out. that they'll do this together, and that they will lead others with them.

so imagining with mike and will, for me, it'd end up being some sort of cross between their st backstories and the hadestown backstories (so maybe they grow up as childhood friends still, but then they fall in love with each other). established byler my beloved <3 we see mike get stuck in his head and hyper-focused, as he is prone to do, and we see this impact their relationship during hard times in the winter. it makes sense with their canon socioeconomic backgrounds, right? will is more focused on what's in front of them. they have to eat. they have to survive. he doesn't necessarily come from privilege, where mike more so does. so maybe that's a point of contention between the two, and that drives will to make the decision to go to hadestown.

mike, of course, isn't going to leave him down there, so as we'd expect, he goes after will. he goes the long way to hadestown, and he's determined to save will, to bring him back, to do better, to not lose will. because at the end of it all, even with all their flaws and the struggles in their relationship, mike and will love each other. i think el would probably be the hermes in this scenario—the one who helps him gets there but in this story, instead of el being able to help mike save will, she can't. maybe her powers are limited. maybe, if she is more like hermes, she can't necessarily make a decision that impacts another god's domain.

which brings me to your other question about hades. you're absolutely right that hades is more of a sympathetic character, and though he's the antagonist of the story, he's arguably not a villain? he's just a grumpy capitalist lmfao. personally, i still think the real villains here were the fates, but that's a whole other story.

you could, i suppose, if you wanted to—make hopper and joyce your hades and persephone. hopper in earlier seasons and his grumpy gruffness does give those kind of vibes, and we know he and joyce can and will argue with each other when they're at odds lol. but idk, if i did end up writing the hadestown au, i probably wouldn't go that route, just because i do think henry fits the "villain" character better.

so, uh... i think then, that would mean this eliminates the b plot of hades/persephone, so from my perspective, i imagine this then becomes more a discussion on henry as an oppressor and hadestown and henry representing a system of abuse (in the way the upside down and henry do in the show). like i said earlier, i like thinking the fates, who are manipulating the whole situation, are the true villains here, so i'd probably write it where henry is both hades and the fates. he plays the sympathetic role and manipulates mike in their confrontation, offering a way out for mike and will, but then turns around and is also that voice of doubt coaxing mike to turn around and doom will back to hadestown.

anyways, those are just some of the thoughts i've had, and i'm nowhere near to the point where i have the time to write a hadestown/byler esque kinda au... but if i did, i'm sure i'd have more coherent thoughts and ramblings to share eventually lol!

Ok so. Context: I was doing OJT or practicum where I, along with my group of student teachers, had to do a demo discussion with the students. The thing is, out topic was mythologies. And Kalpas (crying screaming this man istg) is essentially a walking representation of some myths.

One of the myths we discussed was Prometheus, and although it may seem that Kalpas does not have a connection with this titan aside from their shared association with fire-

Prometheus was the one to teach the people to create and 'wield' fire. This is slightly similar to how Kalpas was one of the pioneers (aka: Flame Chasers) of the Previous Era. Kalpas may not have given the people fire, but he gave them a chance to survive against the Honkai.

Another mythological figure I thought to have a connection was Cu Chulainn of Celtic Myths. He was known to have riastrad, otherwise known as warp spasms, wherein he would go on a rampage, fighting friends and foes alike. Seems familiar 👀

One of the things I love about Shinobi objectively being stupid and weak and lazy and ineffectual is that I feel so many abuse narratives focus on showing the victim ISN'T the things the abuser said and THAT'S why they shouldn't have been abused, whereas with Shin yeah he IS these things and guess what STILL DOESN'T DESERVE ABUSE. I don't think that was the authorial intent, the text is rarely at all sympathtic to Shin, but it's how I choose to handle it. That yeah, he is a big stupid screwup and vain and obnoxious and objectively not a good person and still 110% worthy of sympathy and compassion and should never have been hurt because there's never any justification for that. SORRY FOR THE RAMBLE just I in general love Shin being dumb bc it's funny but also this!

YOU'RE SO RIGHT! I enjoy making fun of him but it's worth saying this!

I'd also add that, if we set aside the times he's written as (or coded as) perv-y - those moments are 100% there for racist and biphobic reasons - his other character flaws are clearly there as a result of Sebastian. They're not the "reason" for the abuse, it's the exact opposite.

And yeah the framing is weird because it's not at all actually sympathetic to him, but also very reluctant to have him actually be the biggest baddie in the room at any point and will constantly have shit things happen to him while he achieves no real villainy.

I think it's mostly coming from a (racist) desire to emasculate the character at every turn, but it winds up making him just not seem that bad and oh my god this got out of hand have a "keep reading"

OK right by my reckoning there are only 2 shin appearances where he's actually the main villain. The one where he kidnaps Warren and Betsy, and the x-force one that is a blatant rehash of it.

The betsy and Warren issue dedicates itself to just listing his damage and, while firmly not on his side, its still a pretty sympathetic take... or is it?

Maybe this was supposed to be an own and they just failed at that.

The x-force one is much more simplistic. He doesn't really get pathos, kidnaps some children and actually murders someone directly with his powers (for I think the first and only time?). It's genuinely ooc how he's actually a straight forward, mostly competent villain here.

So thats TWO issues where he's actually the main bad guy and one of them is a deep exploration of his trauma.

His other appearances are either a story where he's in opposition to other villains, or he's just fucking about (e.g. marauders). With the former, it's that desire to emasculate him again. He's almost always shown as a complete mess next to these other, scarier villains.

Shout out to this very brief cameo where he apparently does some behind the scenes scheming with the Mandarin. Apparently he can be a competent villain so long as he's off the page.

But the rest of the time he's:

Failing at being a super villain in japan

Ignoring Cordelia Frost's weird plans

Being ghosted by the British hellfire club

Failing at being an Upstart

Playing chess with some guy

et alia...

None of this makes me hate him I'm sorry.

The absolute weirdest one framing wise is the storm thing. Shin is coded as a predator. He invites ororo for dinner and drugs her drink. Coding-wise, they're not being subtle here.

But then we immediately find out that it's Candra's plan AND that she's also drugging/otherwise manipulating Shinobi. AND it's implied that they have a physical relationship. So... that's not consensual. It literally can't be.

So, in an issue where he's unambiguously coded as a date r*pist, he's implicitly being sexually abused.

And like..... um???? What am I supposed to take from that?

My best guess it's that it's a 90s "haha man under a woman's control how pathetic of him" but like.. I am incapable of reading it like that.

It's just throughout: this character is intended to be seen as bad but for toxic, racist and queer-phobic reasons, but if you read him without that lens, it's just: "Oh, he's kind of a dumb jerk I guess. He should probably quit drinking."

Basically, if you think a man being weak and ineffectual makes him worthy of scorn, then he'll come across as villainous.... which is kind of ironic I guess.

"Let's break up." The wind carries his quiet voice to you, only three words yet they hold so much meaning- melancholy laced in every syllable, seeping into your soul and weighing you down, stopping you in your tracks.

"...W-what? Why? Did I do something wrong? Is it... me?"

You always thought it was a miracle that Kei noticed you, even more so that he agreed to date. You also expected that this relationship wouldn't last long- even though you always hoped that it would, your doubts of your relationship lasting strayed in your mind since the start. You were just surprised at how sudden it seemed to end.

He stayed silent, not having the energy to talk back, to answer you. He was just done with this. Can't that be enough reason?

You only looked at him in silence, waiting for an answer out of him that he knew wouldn't come. So he stared back.

He wonders to himself. What's making him so hesitant to just leave there and then? Was it his inability to answer you? The pain he'll cause if he just left you there? His own guilt? Or you and your love for him?

Kei wasn't a fool. He might close himself off and act insensitive, but he wasn't oblivious to how you loved him. And he loves- no, loved you too. But then, loved means it's in the past tense, right?

He remembers grumbling about your infinite energy, little study dates at a cafe with your favorite and his, poking fun at you every now and then just for the fun of it because he was bored. A small smile etched into his features at the familiarity of it all, and it quickly disappeared as fast as it showed. Despite all that, he still got tired of it in the end, the routine of doing things with you continuously exhausting him and leaving him with no air left to breathe, crushing and suffocating him until it consumed it whole.

Maybe it wasn't even you who caused this. Maybe it was him. His insecurities of being too harsh to you to the point of you leaving him. Of you finding someone better than him and comparing them. Of you leaving him for someone else. Of not being enough.

Oh, so it was him. How stupid.

"Kei? If it's me, we can talk about it. Am I too noisy? Do I not let you breathe? I'm sorry. I'll stop if you're bothered. I thought you didn't mi-"

"No. Don't say that. It's not you. I just... I can't do this anymore. Don't think you're the problem here." Huh. This is all he could say? How much more of an ass can he be?

"So... you're sure about this? You're really going to end this- whatever this is- like that?" He's resigned to this. He sees your pained smile, struggling to remain strong, willing the tears not to fall. It's as if he can hear your heart break into shards, pieces that would take a long fucking time to heal.

Maybe you should get someone better to put those pieces back together, since he's clearly not good with holding your heart in his hands.

And as he watches you walk away from him and his life, Kei swears he can hear his own heart crash and burn.

I think venti has known about Diluc for a long time. Cause ya know, the Ragnvindrs are like descents of on one of his old friends. So he keeps a little more of an eye on them (plus they have the wine). And I always imagine that's kind of what drew Venti to get to know Diluc more personally is the little ways he saw Ragnvindr in Diluc. Now he knows they are 2 different people and he's honestly thankful he got to know Diluc. Even if he is a massive grump.

As for the blind. Well, Venti didn't "know" Diluc before it happen, he always knows. But he never mentioned it to Diluc, cause he wants Diluc to have the freedom to choose to tell him. To have the freedom to be independent without people trying to help him cause they think he needs it. So he just plays along and covered for Diluc more than once. Diluc didn't realize Venti knew until like a closing time accident where a customer moved a chair and Diluc of course didn't see hits it and falls. Venti instantly hurries over and a little drunk is just like

"Oh Darn! Sorry! I saw that I should have called it out to you. Let me help you up?"

Diluc is just embarrassed and trying to compose himself and keep his 'defiantly not blind' act but quickly realizes the jig's up.

And Diluc gets real embarrassed cause his friendship rank with Venti just went up.

Diluc defiantly would ask for more help from Venti after that. Cause he's noticed the wind more often. Just gentle breezes guiding him around town as he needs it, but never in a forceful way. Just like a friend guiding him, helping him avoid little hazards he can't sense overwise.

Secondly, yeah. It all was a bit of a hell fire. While I wish it never happened, it obviously did but I'm happier now than I was then. Even before ThatStory blew up, my old writing blog was getting out of control and people were feeling super entitled to me, my works, what I did, and who/what I wrote about so in a way, I'm not surprised it headed that way although I never expected it to go THAT way lol. And yes, it was pretty bad but luckily it is done and over with. Fandom culture can be super fun and that's initially what it was for me--just fun before it unfortunately tipped over to the other extreme side of fandom which is toxic. It is what it is.

But to touch on your main point, thank you and it's not crude at all. I don't see your comment that way. In a way, I've come to think of it as much as well (that it must have resonated with people in some weird way) but not just with that particular story but other stories, too so it is really sweet that someone who doesn't read these kinds of stories thinks that of them as well. It also means a lot to me that someone cared enough to think about how I was doing after all this because that really hasn't been the case apart from loyal readers. Most ppl never think about me in this situation 😂 which is probably why what happened, happened. So thank you for the kind words. I'm fine. Like I said, happier now than I was in my previous blog. I've come to think that it's all meant to be. I get a lot more freedom here, I have the sweetest, most loyal readers, and no one feels entitled to my works, my time, or what I do.

Also you didn't upset me at all. While it's admittedly irritating to see people still talking about that shit a literal year and three months or so later, that has nothing to do with you so no worries. I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to check up on me, and thank you for being so kind. Content creation is super personal and I do put my heart into it, so it means a lot to me that you see that 🥺! Truly.

good morning team! i am so glad you asked about all of these things!! i'm gonna put this under a cut because this is just too much glasses luke to see with no warning and bc tumblr really fucked up the formatting when i drafted this so it’s kinda ugly (but also not at all ugly bc it’s glasses luke).

so, moon boo lu is what aria @calumthoodshands calls a very specific version of luke - bleached hair, scruffy, glasses. i will give you an example of moon boo lu followed by the logic behind the name:

so as you can see, truly infallible logic on aria’s part! (other examples of moon boo lu include the please don’t go cover and smiley plaid pants luke.)
