okay so.

i have seen a pattern lately and i am not gonna let it slide. i know that fancasts in general are a way bigger debate than they should be in this fandom, and i’ve loved the spike in diversity between them thats come up recently! i genuinely don’t care about fancasts or have any real faces in mind when i picture these characters, but if you like to, good on you.

here is where i have been very frustrated lately: some of y’all seem to really struggle understand that asian ethnicities are not interchangeable. its become a really popular (and very lovely!) hc to picture sirius and regulus as asian. i love to see it! but i have seen people throw together a korean and a vietnamese person and go: “ta-da! sirius and regulus!” i have seen them defend their choices to asian people by saying some variation of “it doesn’t matter” “they look similar enough” or even just straight-up “well, they’re both asian” and like. it makes my fucking blood boil.

it’s one thing if it’s an honest mistake. it is entirely another if an asian person calls you on it and you decide that it truly doesn’t matter to you.

i could get into the harm that the cross-race effect has, but really i just need to say that perpetuating the idea that all asians look the same is inherently problematic. if you are the kind of person to declare that you see no difference or that there is no difference between different asian ethnicities: you are promoting a long-standing racist ideology and i’m sick and fucking tired of seeing it.

i (again) genuinely do not care about fancasts. picture whenever you’d like as whomever you’d like! but the moment that you cross the line into “whatever they’re both close enough”, that is where i will take issue with it. if that’s an idea that you carry with you outside of fandom spaces: THAT is what the problem is.

japanese people, vietnamese people, chinese, korean, philippine, desi, north south east west fucking ALL OF US have deep and rich cultural backgrounds and distinct features that differentiate us and make us all beautifully unique.

it matters to people. it matters in characters. in the media. in life in general. don’t fucking erase that because you can’t differentiate. do not knowingly and willingly erase us.

either take the time to learn and recognize that or stay in your fucking lane.

Okay. Finished Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Here's my scattered, informally-presented thoughts on it (some spoilers under the cut, but tried to keep it vague). I recommend looking through a professional review online if you want some more in-depth opinions tho

TLDR; Good game, but severely tainted by its janky combat and the writing being pretty "of its time", I think.

I loooove love love love the gameplay, for the most part! I think the stat system is good and forces you to really consider what you want to put your stats into, instead of just letting you farm them or whatever. You can't be an everyman (unless using console commands ofc, which i did). You have to stick to a build, though I think that ranged combat far outweighs ranged. But then again, roleplaying game. Getting a good combat build or stealth build is a side part of the whole experience.

However, I do wanna talk about the combat. The combat. Oh god, the combat. It's really, really bad. For most of the game you can avoid it, but there are multiple boss fights at the very end of the game that force you into combat. If you put all of your experience into stealth and subterfuge options, RIP. Many enemies are damage sponges, and you are most certainly Not a damage sponge in equal measure. Your movements in melee combat are usually slow and difficult to maneuver, meaning that if you get jumped by three or more enemies when you play melee, you're kiiiinda fucked. You stagger on every melee hit and cant avoid damage for shit half the time. Little better with ranged ofc, but the enemies also have guns most of the time, and some enemies will gun you down before you have any time to react. which means that if you run into a group of enemies, again, you're fucked. it's miraculous that they didnt catch just how bad it is to face off against large groups of enemies (and the bosses. they are Really Bad. All of them) in playtesting. So strange.

The roleplay is AMAZING, though. it has good diversity in its dialogue and character backstory, so you're relatively good on that front if you're here to be some guy thats having the roughest time of their life. plenty of avenues you can go for in the gameplay to fit the image you have in mind for your character, and I think that's its greatest strength.

the story is also pretty good! writing is great, love the characters and the setting. the writing is pretty tight, interesting the whole way through, and the reveal about the driving force of the narrative at the end of the game is real fuckin good. greatly enjoyed it.

ofc, there is some pretty bad shit as well; the chinatown area and any chinese character is depicted as evil, traitorous, stupid, or greedy. there's like, probably one or two good chinese characters in the game (if i remember correctly, my playthrough took a while). there's other instances of racism, however; The Sheriff character is a silent, animalistic bodyguard that is killed in several routes. hes stated to be from africa, and serving La Croix, a powerful white person... yknow. There's like four total dark-skinned people in this game, and a whole one of them is good, but only technically in one route, and he's still portrayed as an aggressive guard.

but all in all, i really think it is like, kinda worth the money? its pretty good despite these faults, especially since you have access to console commands and can just turn on god mode if shit gets unbearable (which it will, trust me). theres several unofficial patches that also add to the experience, and are probably even vital to playing the game. I used the VTMB Unofficial Patch, but there's other patches out there i believe, if you want to look at those.

so yeah i recommend it if youre fine with playing an old pc game thats too ambitious for its time.

OKAY SO !! i gotta start by saying that i havent read many books and thats one of the reasons i didnt respond to this ask aside from me taking a break i was a lil embarrassed ngl BUT my response is finally here and i hope you enjoy my rant/rec list !!

all quiet on the western front - erich maria remarque

when i tell you this book destroyed the view i had of life and then built it back again...im not exaggerating. its so beautifully written, and the characterization is wonderful. the narration felt very personal to me, like the story was a little secret between me and paul (the main character), and i don't think it was bc it was written in 1st person pov. ofc im sure it influenced my perception of the story, but the language that was used and constant contradictions and the way paul would go on long, eloquently put together, tangents about his thoughts and emotions and opinions to then disregard everything he said with a sudden wave of doubt and hopelessness — i think it made him very human. i felt very connected to his character, and i do think it was bc i had grown fond of the version i saw of him in the 2022 film (which has nothing on the book, can't even compare em really), the already preexisting feeling was only amplified by the narration and the intricate sentences AND AND i saw my own writing be reflected on the book — for instance, i noticed there were very long long sentences, which is something i rlly like doing. all in all, it showcases the ww1 soldier experience very crudely, in a very beautifully sad way; you can feel remarque's pain and anger in every sentence — his opinion about the war and its futility are very clear, and it honestly makes the book a 100 times better. though i do think my opinion is VERY biased when it comes to this book so please do take it with a grain or a spoonful really of salt

everything i never told you - celeste ng

i read this book a while ago, but even so it remains as one of my top 3 i dont read a lot bear with me TT the book has a very catchy opening line, which instantly had me hooked — it narrates the story of a mixed-race, chinese-american family in the 70s and how they navigate the disappearance of their daughter. i think the book does an amazing job at juggling multiple povs without neglecting any character. it develops each individual storyline very well and the way it delves into the internal conflicts and psyche of each character is just 10/10

little fires everywhere - celeste ng

i gotta be honest, this book didnt "hook" me as much as the other two did, but i still think it was very good and definitely worth a read. i think celeste ng has the tendency to start her books very actively? what i mean with this is that she opens up the story with a very shocking fact or occurrence (?) and then ties everything back to the beginning — almost as if she started writing the story backwards. i think that's really cool, bc even though we as the reader know the "climatic" event, we dont exactly know what happened and are left at the edge of our seats wondering what exactly went down for this to happen, ya know?

the metamorphosis - franz kafka

now, this is also me being biased bc i have the biggest and greatest, most softest spot for kafka and this book. in short, and i mean in very short, the story's about a man who suddenly turns into a bug — the beauty of simplicity in summaries. i read it when i was 16 in literature class and i was absolutely smitten with the story the main character...i really wanted to fix him, kay?? at the time i wasn't at my bestest in terms of mental stability, so im sure that influenced my love and understanding for the book, but analysing it in class and delving into the context behind the book and the author, and interpreting it from my own pov just sigh it was so good.

like water for chocolate - laura esquivel

FUCK i can't express how fun this book is. its a romance book, and also a perfect example of magical realism. AND IT DOES IT THROUGH FOOD !! tita (the main character) has a very deep bond with cooking, and because of this, the food she makes is a direct reflection of the emotional state she was in while she did so — cook the food that is. and, if im not mistaken bc i also read this book when i was 16, each chapter starts with the recipe that tita will prepare — i loved that detailed so much because i love cooking as well, tho i prefer baking. and though it is technically a tragic-romance novel, it is very lighthearted (and i mean this in the bestest way possible) and very funny imo. i would recommend it to anyone in the blink of an eye.

Minhyuk sheds a tear when he explains how much u have grown on him in this time. He reads out how he had hoped to learn about himself as a man and how to treat a lady well, and he concludes that u have set the standard and how special u have become to him

and just like that it was over

it felt so surreal

and minhyuk felt both relieved

and in mourning

To be freaking honest

Everything was so sus between u

Clearly so many people wanted u do end up with each other at the end of it

And so many took to the internet to talk about how whipped minhyuk was for u

some people pointed out how ur touches lingered

and how ur eyes sparkled when u interacted

but again

it wasnt really out of character for u

so most of ur fans didnt get their hopes up

but if u let him try, he thinks he can make u happy

A/N : this is my first time writing anything. So I'm not sure how this all works exactly but enjoy.

Summary : alot of fluff, abit of cursing kind off nothing too bad. You work at Nelson and Murdock and you find daredevil in the office late at night in pretty bad shape but thats not all you find out.

I have been working at Nelson and Murdock for a little over a year now. I handled all their finances. It was pretty stressful to say the least since Matt had the tendency of picking cases that weren't very good for business. I didn't mind though because although it wasn't good for business it was still helping people. I had become pretty close with Matt, Karen and foggy in the small amount of time I'd got to know them. I thought I knew all of them pretty well but how wrong I was. I didnt realize just how much I did not know about one particular member of our little group until now.

Karen had taken the day off to run some errands so I agreed to fill in for her where need be for the day.

Foggy and Matt had left awhile ago calling it a day. I had decided to stay back and catch on my work.

I decided to take a break and get some food. I took a brisk walk and got some Chinese food from the restaurant down the road.

Matt's pov

I needed to find a hide out and soon before the rest of the cartel found me. I had not anticipated how many of them would be at that warehouse tonight and I paid heavily for it.

The safest place for me right now is the office. Surprisingly the door was unlocked that's strange I thought. Y/N is not usually this careless. I brushed it off and walked inside.

I barely made it to the window before I collapsed. I felt around the window for the handle and pushed it open. I needed some fresh air.

I was so focused on the window that I hadn't realized someone else was in the room until I heard a gasp. Shit shit shit.

Y/N pov

I walked upstairs towards our office. The door was wide open. Thats strange I know I closed it when I left. The second I walked in a loud gasp escaped from my mouth and I dropped the packet in my hand.

Sitting infront of the window was someone dressed in full black. I had heard about a masked vigilante saving people at night but I myself had never come face to face with them before.

I immediately noticed the blood and rushed over against my better judgement. " I am going to help you. I think you may have wondered in here when you got hurt. I've got a first aid kit in the draw okay."

Matt's pov

I thought she would be gone home by now. What is she still doing working so late. She rushed over to me and reassured me she would help me. Atleast she hasn't figured out it's me yet. She reached over and grabbed the first aid kit from the draw to the right. I'd have to tell her now there's no way around it.

Y/N POV

I got the first aid kit from the draw. He had not responded to what I had said yet. I know this was risky for him but he need the help. I slowly etched closer and lifted up his shirt where to get a better look at the gash. He did not stop me so I took it as a sign that it was okay. I removed it completely. Shit he had a really toned body. I mentally face palmed myself . The guy is injured and youre busy gawking at his body. I gently dabbed at the gash trying to clean up the blood as best I could. He grabbed my sides. I knew that it must hurt like hell so I let him hold onto me.

I finished cleaning it up and bandaging it. He still hasn't said a word and his hands have not moved from my sides. " I'mm

going to have to take off your mask so I can clean up any cuts on your face. I promise I will not reveal your identity to anyone. We can pretend this never happened . I just want to help you as best I can" . I hesitated

Matt's pov

I could hear her heartbeat quicken its pace. She was nervous. I was too. This could take a turn for the worst but she needed to know. It was time and I trusted her more than she knew.

I moved my hand from her side. I heard a small sigh which wasn't intended for me to hear. She thought I was leaving. I grabbed her hand which was on her thigh and moved it to my face hoping she'd catch the hint.

She gently touched my mask and slowly pulled it off. It felt like an eternity but in reality it was probably a few seconds. "Matt " she said her voice full of concern and shock. " hay Y/N" I say with soothing voice

Y/N pov

I couldn't believe my eyes. Out of all the people I expected to be under that mask matt was not one of them. I immediately launched myself at him engulfing him in a hug. I was shocked at my actions but I didn't pull back. " Matt why didn't you tell me? Are you okay? I am so proud and angry and every other emotion all in one"

Matt's pov

I did not expect her to react this way. Her body felt so good on mine. Like two puzzle pieces fitting together. I expected her ask me how was it possible or walk out yelling but those words that left her mouth touched me more than she will ever know. I slowly wrapped my arms around her and kissed her head. " shh its okay im okay. I was scared of how you'd react. I didnt want to lose you but im glad you know now"

Y/N pov

I felt myself melt futher into him as he kissed my head. "Matt even if I did leave y'all don't exactly need my expertise that much. You should have told me ."

I loved working with them. He could never lose me even if he fired me. I would probably still show up.

Matt's pov

She thought I meant losing her as an employee but she couldn't be futher from the truth. Ever since she stumbled in here 15 months ago I had been completely captivated . I knew just by the way she walked and talked that she was special and different. She was quirky and funny and kind all wrapped in one. I knew she was beautiful too by the way foggy stuttered when talking to her for the first few weeks until he got used to her. Before I knew it . I had fallen for her. I knew she felt the same by the way her heart would speed up everytime I entered the room or brushed past her. She would get a little nervous when speaking to me.

What i said next shocked us both.

" Y/N. I am not worried about you leaving Nelson and Murdock although your presence her is essential. I am worried about you leaving me. You have no idea how much you mean to me. I fell for your stupid little laugh the second you walked into my life and I knew then and there I wanted to hear that laugh every minute of everyday."

Y/N POV

I couldn't believe what I heard. I pulled back quickly. His face fell in an instant. " I'm sorry if I misread the signs ..I...uh" he began to stutter. He thought I didnt feel the same way. I giggled " Matt you are such a dork." I said before pressing my lips on his. He gave me a little grin when I pulled back. " so does this mean we're a thing now" I ask.

" what do you think?" He says as he pecks my lips. " well my boyfriend might have abit of a problem with this." I say laughing. " you don't have a boyfriend y/n but if you did he would have to flip off because you're mine now."

" well I see you two have got alot of work done " . We both turn our heads to see foggy at the door with a smirk.

okay hello i have not written much for the past 2-3 days bc i have not been taking care of myself BUT LISTEN bc i have not seen this anywhere in the tr fandom (eng at least)

theory about bonten’s name/origin!! really long post sorry 

TOKYOREV 216 SPOILERS!!

to help: ⊳ after the image (twitter) is completely my own theories (a lot). the top part + the image is the main points that i wanted to get across (i built on them underneath)

bonten is made up of 2 kanji (chinese characters but japanese basically). 梵天. bonten is 2018.

brahman (senju’s gang, one of the 3 deities) is 梵, which is the first kanji of bonten. brahman most likely did not go very far after the vision takemichi had with senju dying, so it probably didnt go past 2009 (which is honestly kind of a stretch).

tenjiku (izana/kisaki, yk) is also made up of 2 kanji, 天竺. the first kanji is in bonten, and we all know that manjirou (mikey) likes to keep family and others in mind nowadays (esp because he decided to end his life when there was no one else to protect bc he killed them or he cut them off, also to end the suffering he felt).

so i was thinking. the 天 in bonTEN is most likely from tenjiku from what i would like to assume. obviously bc izana was his brother, even not by blood, but he still cared and wanted to carry out shinichirous dream (he wanted all the brothers/siblings to meet and get along like actual siblings).

but we dont know what could be important to manjirou from brahman. we do know that he’s takes action based on others instead of himself (unless it’s his dark impulse). we DO know that AKASHI HARUCHIYO (otherwise known as sanzu haruchiyo, i will be referring to him as sanzu) is literally called the loyal mad dog. 

manjirou does know of his loyalty (unconfirmed, but it would be surprising if he didnt, seeing how he unapologetically killed mucho). and obviously sanzu has been confirmed that he is in fact related to senju and akashi takeomi. i mentioned in my last theory post that sanzu may had been the one to kill senju, his own sister. 

we really dont know the relationship between sanzu and the rest of his siblings, but there mustve been a reason for manjirou to use the same kanji as brahman in bonten..? 

⊳ btw, the 梵 kanji (brahman) is literally brahman from buddhism!! highly unlikely that mikey would use the same kanji in his own gang (from an opposing one) in the future without any type of significance to him. 

im gonna be honest that i didnt think so far as to exactly why manjirou used the same character, but i can only imagine the only thing thats been introduced to us as a connector. its possible that now that takemichi and draken are in brahman, it could also be a possiblity? 

maybe draken dies again, and senju also dies, which is something that takemichi needs to try and prevent. i have a feeling that since senju dies in the current 2018 timeline, then thats also part of a reason that bonten was created. 

manjirou really reminds me of the “nothing is more important than family” dom toretto memes, where he places family over everyone else, even if they arent blood related (ex. izana). its possible that sanzu would have mourned senju and manjirou saw it or something.

again, we dont know much about the akashi family’s relationships together. maybe sanzu literally did not give a shit. maybe he broke down (unlikely from what we know of him, but not impossible). 

bonten was never a thing before the tenjiku arc, which is also why i think that the second character in bonten is from tenjiku. before it was only corrupt touman under the rule of kisaki, but now kisaki is dead so bonten rose up.

in the end, this shouldnt make so much of a difference in plot, but character lore yes. the goal is to save not just mikey, but sano manjirou (as kazutora says), but what gets us there is a complete mystery. whatever happens, good luck to theorists, tokyorev manga readers, and future anime watchers. </3 

do what you want with this information, ive just never seen anyone make the connection, especially in the english fanbase. if someone has then whoops! same big brain.

Hi! I hope you are doing okay with all the discourse going around. Im white and raised in a very white society so i will never have a say in it, but i was wondering, is there any way i can educate myself more in asian/chinese culture? Im aware i consume content thru western lens and because of that i dont really get all the nuances of the shows, but i would like to have at least some backround. Im guessing just watching the shows doesnt give enough of that, can you maybe reccommend some blogs or books to check out? (If you dont thats totally fine and im sorry if i said anything offensive)

Hey friend! Not offensive at all, no worries. Honestly, I’m not too sure. I think just keeping an open mind about things is a really good start. I’m not really sure which blogs to recommend but if I could recommend some dramas? Since it’s probably easier to watch a show then read a book?

《The Story of Minglan》 is a good one to sort of parse out the intricacy of historical Chinese society in the Song Dynasty, keeping in mind that different dynasties have different practices, so even amongst different time periods there were differences. 《The Story of Yanxi Palace》 is another good one for Qing Dynasty (circa 1740s) if you wanna get into imperial harem stuff. (Or you can watch 《甄嬛传》 or 《如懿传》 for harem stuff. I just think The Story of Yanxi Palace is the most palatable, most aesthetic, and most fun out of the three. The other two are kinda tragic?) There are other dramas but I feel they’re not as... accessible?

Chinese historical dramas come in 3 flavours: serious dramas, idol dramas, and those that ride the fence. What I mean by idol drama is...everyone in it is young and hot and the writing is eh and the acting is eh. More often then not there’s a lot of modern elements to it. The Untamed is so popular because it’s idol drama done really well.  (xianxia and wuxia genre used to be more quality when I was a kid, but now they’re kind of ehhhh.) I would say Minglan and Yanxi are both successful because they ride the fence. 

On the other hand, serious historical drama has A LOT of politics and can be quite dry especially if you’re watching it through half-assed subtitles. The actors typically are more seasoned, older. People jokingly say that idol drama is what mom watches and serious drama is what dad watches, and honestly given my parents’ tv habits...it’s pretty accurate 😂.

Some really well known ones from the past 20 years are: 

The 《铁齿铜牙纪晓岚》 series 1-4. I would only recommend part 1-2, 3-4 are not as great. This one has quite a bit of humour but it might fly over your head a bit because of the language barrier. The story surrounds a well known government official and scholar named Ji Xiaolan  纪晓岚, his frenemy and colleague the (EXTREMELY corrupt) prime minister He Shen, and the Emperor Qianlong. For better or worse these three are depicted as both liege and subjects as well as friends. Trying to see Ji Xiaolan and He Shen one up each other while Qianlong tries to balance his court and rule the country is quite interesting. I won’t pretend this is an easy series to follow, but it’s actually quite fun. 

《汉武大帝》 - is about Hanwu Emperor of the Han Dynasty circa 150 BC? He’s one of the most famous emperors of distant history. It’s basically about the course of his life and the many people that featured in it. 

《大明王朝 》- my memories of this one is very vague, but it is about the Ming Dynasty (the dynasty before the Qing Dynasty c. 1500,1600.) 

《The Advisors Alliance 军事联盟》-  2017 two-part television series based on the life of Sima Yi, a government official and military general who lived in the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period of China. circa 150 AD. 

As a side note, a lot of serious dramas for a while now have been focused on the Qing Dynasty, just because it’s the last imperial dynasty before Imperial China fell into decline, WWI and WWII ravaged the country and communism happened. Even a lot of idol drama are about the Qing Dynasty (I feel like I should do a post about this, just to string things together haha). 

So for the Qing Dynasty, because they are Manchurian, their last name is Aisin Gioro or in Chinese Aixin Jueluo 爱新觉罗. Their earlier emperors are much more well known than their later ones and have been the focus of MANY dramas. (You’ll notice their names in the beginning spell very different than the Chinese names you’re used to, but once they take over China, the emperors’ names start to become more and more mainland Chinese and less and less Manchurian.) 

Nu’er Hachi 努尔哈赤/ Nurhaci - The granddaddy of Qing Dynasty, but was never officially Emperor of China during his life time. 

Huang Taiji 皇太极 - Nurhaci’s oldest son. He led the campaign against the Ming Dynasty but died before the campaign was over 

Fulin 福林, Emperor Shunzhi 顺治 - Huang Taiji’s 9th son. He is the real first Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. His uncle Duo’Ergun 多尔衮/ Dorgon was his regent as well as his commander-in-chief. Dorgon was the one who won the war against the Ming Dynasty and instated his nephew as the Emperor. Fulin was 6 years old when this happened, and now you may wonder why the fuck is that? It’s because Fulin’s mother, Huang Taijii’s widowed concubine Consort Zhuang (name: pu’erji-jite bumubutai  (pinyin) 博爾濟吉特 布木布泰/ Bumbutai Borjigit, Da-Yu’er 大玉儿) remarried her brother-in-law Dorgon. Whether Bumbutai and Dorgon were actually in love is....contestable. Certainly one of my favourite serious dramas that depict this part of history is《大青风云》. 

Xuanye 玄燁, Emperor Kangxi 康熙 - Fulin’s third son. Very famous. Very long reign. Serious drama associated 《康熙微服私访记》， 《康熙王朝》

Yinzhen 胤禛, Emperor Yongzheng 雍正 - Xuanye's 4th son. His reign was highly contested because some ppl believed he forged the succession document. It’s probably not true. He was an efficient emperor but very austere, very severe. Not well liked. The best serious drama about him is probably 《雍正王朝》and the aforementioned《甄嬛传》. The former is 100% politics and a fictional re-telling of historical events whereas the latter is 100% harem drama and 100% made up. 《步步惊心》is an idol drama about a girl who transmigrated back to this time and fell in love with Yinzhen. Lol. 

Hongli 弘历, Emperor Qianlong 乾隆 - Yinzhen’s 4th son. I think he’s the longest living/reigning emperor of Chinese history. SOOOOO many dramas were made about him or set in his reign. Of the serious drama category:  《铁齿铜牙纪晓岚》 that I mentioned earlier is really good. There are others but I won’t name them here.  《如懿传》 is a serious drama about his harem, but really terrible? I really didn’t like it (just my personal view). Incidentally it was released around the same time as《The Story of Yanxi Palace 延禧攻略》which is also about his harem and MUCH better in my opinion, because the actor for Hongli in Yanxi is much better skills-wise. 《还珠格格》was the OG idol drama about Hongli’s children. I gave a brief synopsis about it here. It was made in the 90s but damn...so nostalgic. 

There’s many more emperors after him, but they’re not as important. 

Okay yeah, so I’m not sure if any of this is really helpful, but definitely watching serious drama gives you much better context and understanding of Chinese culture than idol drama. I mean when the drama has flying and magic...the historical relevance sort of falls to the side. 🤣

ADDENDUM: I made a typo earlier. Fulin is Huang Taiji’s 9th son, not Nurhaci’s son. Also Abahai is Huang Taijii’s mother’s name (wikipedia lied to me on this one XD).

thoughts on shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings (spoilers)

not as in depth as the loki stuff just general thoughts.

also i know nothing about chinese culture or anything so i don't really go into that

okay, i know i said i wouldnt talk about chinese culture, but this movie did feel chinese, at least to my understanding of the culture? if that makes any sense? it didnt feel like a cheap american knock off.

i loved shang-chi. he was so funny. & the trailers kind of made him out to be all serious or whatever, which i wasnt looking forward to. but he felt human and i could relate to him a lot. i loved seeing him struggle with his identity. i wanted to hug him through most the movie. simu liu was FANTASTIC. very funny, good action scenes (shout out to simu liu & the stunt double(s), since i'm sure it was a combination of them all).

katy was great. wasn't sure if i'd like her when i saw the trailers, but i loved her. she was also super relatable. i love her. she is amazing. i love how she was funny & how she was kind & actually pretty chill about everything, considering it all. & i loved how she just wanted to help shang-chi, to help the village, to help everyone.

we didn't get much of xialing, but i loved what we got. i love how she trained herself and how she was bitter towards shang-chi at first, but over time they grew together in order to save the universe. also cool fights with the knife-rope-thing (i have no idea what thats called)

wenwu is one of the best villains. he was bad in the past, put it all away to be a father, came back to it as a coping mechanism for ying li's death, and then was just trying to get his wife back because the soul eaters were tricking him. he does care about ying li, shang-chi, and xialing, although in a twisted way. & when he gave shang-chi the rings at the end. gosh. good performance. i loved him.

we didnt get much ying li, so i dont have much to say, but i quite liked her.

i also liked nan and lots of the side ta lo villagers.

wong! in the fight! teaching abomination how to fight better! i love him! also, we all keep saying he's the responsible magic user. well, i still stand by that. wanda broke reality, sylvie broke the universe, stephen is going to do something with the multiverse. fighting and doing karaoke are different

trevor! he was the person i never expected to see in this movie, but i loved seeing him. the thing about planet of the apes was hilarious, him not being dead & only performing was hilarious, the whole thing was great.

this is a good movie if you like hotel california.

the ten rings affects were so good. same with the great protector's & the sole eaters. and the ta lo martial arts affects

i loved how each character had something important to do at the climax.

J: I feel like I've been seeing you every day.

K: Yeah, what could that be?

T: Yeah.

J: Yeah, its strange.

K: Yeh, I feel like I saw you yesterday.

J: Thats right.

T: Yeah.

K: Did something happen, I wonder?

J: Yeah, something might have...

K: Haha.

J: Anyhow, I drank too much last night, and I have quite a hangover today.

K: Oh really? Yeh, your face somehow looks a bit swollen.

J: Right?

K: Haha

J: *To Tasai* Have you been drinking? For the end of the year?

T: Not at all.

J: Oh, you havn't? How about you Kaoru?

K: Oh, I have.

J: Have you? Not too much though?

K: No, I've been ok.

J: Yes. 'Early predictions for buzzword of the year. The most symbolic word of the year is...?' Well, there have already been 30 nominations released for the buzzword of the year. But, well, there are predictions, and most of the words for 2020 are corona related. At the moment the prediction for #1 is 'social distance', #2 is 'the Three C's', #3 is 'Stay Home', #4 is 'Covid crisis', #6 is 'Abe no mask', #9 is 'Amaebi'..

K: Its 'Amabie'. (*This is the name of a spirit which is believed to ward off plagues*)

J: Ah, Amabie, yes. What did I say?

K: Ama ebi (*sweet shrimp*).

T: Very delicious stuff will come.

J: That sounds odd.

K: haha

J: Uh, #10 is 'State of Emergency'. 8 out of the top 10 are corona related. There are also others such as 'Go To Campaign', 'PCR test', and 'Self-restraint police' etc within the nominations.

K: I see.

J: What do you two think about a buzzword for this year?

T: Because its always been about Tenryu.(*Former Pro-wrestler*)

K: Hahaha.

J: Is Tenryu still active?

T: Haha, no..

T: Yes.

K: But he does appear on TV quite a bit.

T: For any one who doesn't know what we're taking about, we'll just say he's on tv sometimes.

T: We run stories about the secret 'Tenryu metal bat' incident, and stuff.

K: But we want that kind of thing, right?

J: Yeah, haha. Wouldn't it be great if our buzzword for the year was 'Tenryu'?

T: I think it would be for Tokyo Sports...Tenryu, or..'Big boobs' or something like that.

J: Ahh. Well, we need something for this show, The Freedom of Expression. Like, 'Night shift'?

T: Hmm, 'night shift' or..I feel like you've said quite a few puns, Joe.

J: I probably have.

K: But actually, last time...Kami was saying 'small boobs' quite a lot.

J, T: Hahaha

J: He was! The buzzword of the year: Small boobs?

T: There's quite a lot of things 'lacking' about this show too though, isn't there? Haha.

K: Yeh, lacking good taste. It can't be helped.

J: Well, yeh, Kami is vulgar. We can't change that. Isn't there anything you can think of, Kaoru? Anything unforgettable..a symbol of 2020?

K: I feel like there should be.

T: Oh, but there was Hosojimaya too!

J: Hosojimaya, yeh. Carbohydrate + carbohydrate.

K: That was your..

T: Your favourite set meal right?

J: I always end up saying that...Carbs + carbs.

T: Oh, I remember one. When Kaoru was eating ramen at Hosojimaya, he said 'I'm collecting all the onions in one spoon'.

K: Hahaha

J: Collecting all the onions in one spoon?

T: It was that delicious.

J: When you were drinking the soup?

K: Yeah.

T: Yeh, he was like, 'The onions are so good, I can get them all into one spoon!'. That one stands out for me.

J: Haha 'Collecting the onions in one spoon', the buzzword for 2020?

K: But I do sit there eating that for a long time, the onions and stuff.

T: Yeh, you were saying, 'This is so good'.

J: Why is that? You are not remembering being poor as a kid?

K: I just like onions.

J: You like onions?

T: They are delicious.

J: I like them too. I still go to Hosojimaya sometimes.

K: Oh, do you?

J: Yeah.They said they've had a few customers who saw the restaurant on this show. So thank you for that.

K: It'd be nice to go to some other places lIke that. A Chinese restaurant or something.

J: Yeah, it would. I wanna go to Chinese restaurants so much that the buzzword for the show next year will be 'Chinese restaurants'!

T: Haha

K: Im not sure about that just yet...

J: Oh, is that a bit too much? haha. But, I don't know why I said 'Sweet prawn' (amaebi), instead of Amabie. When I shake my head, I can feel the alcohol sploshing around.

K: But when this came out at first, we didn't know anything about it, did we?

T: I still don't really. What is it?

K: Im not that sure..

J: Its like a spirit to protect against infectious disease. I don't know where this came from. Its like a strange looking character. Amabie..

T: But Joe-style is Ama ebi.

K: Was sweet prawn a thing this year? haha.

J: I messed up..

K: Its the first I've heard of it!

T: Haha, yeh.

J: Well, yeh, sweet prawn didn't really come up in our lives during 2020. But don't you wanna come up with something that is unrelated to corona?

T: Yeah.

K: Well, yeh.

J: Kami, do you have any ideas?

Kami: As for me? I kinda want this one to do well...'Ojikun' (*A trend of younger women falling for middle aged men*). Its not in the nominations, is it?

T: Oh, Ojikyun, yeah.

J: What is Ojikyun?

T: There was this tv drama with a bunch of middle aged men, and the younger women thought they were cute. Like they fell for them.

K: Oh, I remember something like that.

T: Yeah, it was a manga too.

J: Ojikyun...that sounds good.

K: *points at Joe* You think you are old enough for Ojikyun?

J: I really want that to happen.

K: Well, that makes us all Ojikyun.

J: Haha, no no, thats totally me.

T: Joe, you are still young!

J: No no, really. Lets go with 'Ojikyun'.

K: You keep saying we should go with everything, haha.

J: Well, you see, the alcohol is affecting me today, it really is.

K: Ok, lets appeal for suggestions...

J: Oh, yeah.

K:...for this show's buzzword of the year.

T: Ah, I see.

K: Lets see which things have left an impression on the viewers.

T: Well, for me its Kaoru collecting all those onions. So, we want to know what other things have stood out to the viewers.

J: Yes.

T: Oh, that makes me so happy.

T: Well, thanks to this show, and Joe modelling it..

T: Joe, the fashion leader.

J: Im not a fashion leader at all. I only ever wear black.

K: Hahaha

J: What are you talking about? haha. Okay, I'll go with 'Tokyo Sports Hoodie' for the buzzword.

J: So, lets ask the viewers for thier suggestions.

K: Yeah, lets.

J: Which was the best word on the show this year, or the most symbolic.

T: Sounds good.

K: So, should we choose the one with the most votes as the winner?

J: I guess thats how it would go.

T: Well, we can't forget about what Kami wants..

K: So, like we can choose one, and if we remember it...We won't just go by which had the most suggestions.

T, J: Yeh, yeh, yeh.

K: And we can give one of the radio stickers as a present to that person.

J: Oh, those stickers! Thats a good idea.

Kami: Um, this might be a bit different from a buzzword, but Dir en grey did that online live show, right?

T, K, J: Yes.

Kami: Not the online live, I mean the streamed setlist chosen by members.

T, K, J: Oh yes

Kami: When the new song 'World of Mercy' was played, everyone said, 'Its Tashiro!'. (*Controvesial former tv star Tashiro Masashi, nicknamed 'Marcy', prosecuted for filming up womens' skirts and drug use. Marcy/マーシー and Mercy/マーシー have the same pronunciation in Japanese.*)

T: Ah, I see, haha.

K: Oh, that. Marcy..

Kami: Yes, Marcy/Mercy, its Tashiro. Could that be a buzzword?

T: I mean, what can we say about that?

J: I guess it is...

K: Well, it is, but if a regular person saw it, they would think of that Marcy (*as opposed to Dir's Mercy).

J: Haha, 'that Marcy'? Should we include 'Tashiro'?

T: I mean, it is a thing amongst the fans.

Kami: Within this show...Tashiro.

T: Online slang is pretty interesting, right?

J: Yeah.

K: Lets just put this Mercy/Marcy talk to one side, shall we? Haha.

J: Really. We ended up talking about this kind of thing before we even realised it.

K: But yeah, Id like to decide on a buzzword for the year for the Freedom of Expression, so please send us your suggestions.

J: Where should they send them to?

Wish Dragon – Movie Review

A/N: Oh wow, look at me guys! Actually reviewing a recently released movie, what is this opposite day? No. I was just into watching this, and now that I have, I wanna talk about it.

So, spoilers ahead, probably.

Also, I just wanna note that I LOVE the fact that Sony releases this also Dragon themed animated movie on Netflix the same month (probs week too) that Raya and the last dragon is available for everyone on Disney plus. I just find that very funny for some reason, because fuck Disney. Anyways.

So, Wish Dragon, is a Sony animated film, which is kind of a chinese (as far as I understood at least thats where it's supposed to be set) take on Aladdin, in the most Dreamworks Sherk-esk kinda way. And, I love it for it.

Now, I recently did something for school about chinese culture, and I know the chinese audiences don't like comedic dragon portrails because its sacred (at least that was the reaction to Mulan which was why it was cut out of the remake), and I know there are probably a bunch of stuff wrong with this movie culturally, BUT since it's not my culture I'm not comfortable or qualified to comment on it, so know that this is from a scandinavian movie-lovers point of view. Coolio.

I don't have that much concrete to actually say about this movie, I think the only thing I did not like, is some times they forced some english pop-music in there, where I would have preferred if they had used some chinese pop-music instead, just because it kinda pulled you out of it. I don't know, might just be a me thing.

There is a lot of great things about this movie. It is, the story is good, well suited for children without being too childish, yes, we have a million times before heard the: "Money can't buy happiness", but I actually feel like this movie had a point. Like, it is like most stories like that, but Long's backstory which seems very relatable with big tech companies these days, something about it really at least for me hit a nerve in a different way in just oh rich people don't have time for family buhu. Like that was there too, but the fact that there was such nuance, and it was not just oh being poor is perfect, no, the bad sides of that was showed too, and I really liked the emphasis it had indirectly on community. But it can also come across as a little preachy I do understand that, but it can also be seen as anti-capitalism sooo.

The animation is great, I actually loved that they made a male dragon pink and didn't really comment on it. But yeah, pretty nice and smooth animation, I kind of like the long legs quirky style because I feel like it gives a little extra something something, but that is probably more a personal preference.

I liked the characters, they were a bit childish sometimes, but I understood that this movie is prodomenintly aimed at kids, and I can see how they would see being a teenager like this. The only character I was like, eurgh about was the bad guy, he seemed so interesting and fun especially like animation wise he moved kind of like a lizard of squid, but not in a way that stood out too much, which was just cool. But my problem with him is, I wished there had just been some groundwork. Like, any, at all that he wanted to be a strong young independent woman who don't need no man. Like, just annoyance to be more clear somehow, because it was not a twist, like the bad guy is bad? Okay? Am I supposed to be surprised here? Like, why hide it? At least make the character have an arc, there were more than a few just on the top of my head, scenes where they could have just let him smash a phone in rage or just SOMETHING!

I loved the dialog, it was legitimately funny, there were also a few funny animation things, like I don't know why, but Din going back to close toiletseat while he is running away is just so in character and funny to me. But just, f*ck, most of what Long, Din and Din's mother says are just gems. *Chefs kisses the script*. I really loved that this movie really had this, Shrek f*ck Disney kind of vibe, that it kind of seamlessly blended in with a really great and heart warming story, and that was in the dialog, down to the Aladdin rip-off, it really took some classic Disney things and turned them on its head without compromising characters or story.

Also, the opening sequence with Din and Li Na, was brilliantly animated, really just beautiful and heartwarming and heartbreaking in a way normally only Pixar is able to do it. I cried. And its realistic too!

All in all, I love this movie. I love the animation, that it can make you cry like Pixar, while sending a f*ck you Disneys way through the dialog without compromising story, I love most of the choices made in this movie with only a few tweaks. This is a great movie.

So should you see it? I mean if you want, I would recommend it.

I give it 9,5 out of 10 Kung-fu powers.

I know, I could give it 10, but 10 for me is a gut feeling and with the tweaks it just isnt there, however, 9,5 pretty god damn near perfect!

no dot is cool, it’s a banger lol. i kinda wish it was a full group song, but i like how much sua is able to show off! we got rapping sua again! i bet the choreo for this is great, i saw that there is one, though i havent watched the performance she did at the showcase

entrancing is beautiful, i was expecting either something like this or like her legendary overdose cover for her solo, so this makes sense. kinda sounds like a movie or videogame soundtrack lol (but with singing on top of it)

winter is chill, i dont have much else to say. i like how it finishes off in chinese though, that’s sweet

for is nice, yoohyeon’s voice is great, she’s such a good singer. it’s more of a winter song than handong’s winter is haha, it’s practically a christmas song, which is weird cause it’s april right now. but thats okay lol

beauty full... okay i was not expecting dami to go like full pop punk or whatever lol. interesting. i think it fits her voice well

playground is playful, yeah it’s not bad. it’s probably the catchiest out of the solos? ive only listened to each of them once, but that’s my first impression

hmmm. yeah they’re not bad, but i don’t feel super excited about any of them tbh. if i had to choose a favorite, it’d be between sua’s and dami’s, but even with those i feel like i’m left wanting a bit more. most of the solos are pretty chill, even siyeon’s soundtracky ballad-ish one that i feel like could have been a lot grander and larger scale. i feel like No Dot could have gone harder, and Beauty Full could have been edgier and faster. i like Beauty Full’s commitment to a style of rock that hasnt been done by Dreamcatcher before, and i’m a big punk fan haha punk is my bread and butter, but then again this really isn’t the type of punk that i ever listened to all that much. if it even counts as punk, i suppose. but yeah tho it’s not bad, i think it’s the one i’m the most likely to listen to the most, out of all the bsides, not just the solos. but all in all, i feel like Dreamcatcher have lost a little bit of their edge and their punchiness with this album. that’s okay, cause this chiller approach is something consistent across the album and if that’s what you’re into then you would love it! it’s just not something i’m head over heels about. there’s no Sahara or Red Sun or Break the Wall or Wind Blows or Wake Up or Mayday on this album, but that’s okay. 

here’s my takeaway... I don’t love it. there isn’t really a song that i think i’m gonna be obsessed with, and tbh Maison is the title track that i’m not feeling from them the most in a really long time, maybe it’s the least i’ve been feeling one of their title tracks in the whole time that i’ve been a somnie. but.......... that’s okay. like... with plenty of other groups, feeling this way about a comeback would be really disappointing for me, but with Dreamcatcher i really don’t think it’s a big deal. they’re the kpop group i’ve listened to the most, almost double the amount that i’ve listened to any other kpop group. they’ve given me so much over the years haha, it’s okay if there’s one or two that i’m not as into. they’ve definitely earned the right to do whatever they want too, they don’t have to prove anything to me haha, everything has already been proven. another thing is that i dont feel like theyve sold out or anything lmao, this isnt a case where a comeback feels like a misstep or a mistake, no, because it still feels very Dreamcatcher. their identity shines through and i love that about the concept and theme and energy of this era. it’s plainly and simply just that i’m not feeling the songs especially hard, and that would be the case no matter what the songs were about and what the music video looked like and what the album title was and all of that stuff. i can like the concept of a song a lot, but not feel like the song itself is really hitting me. you know what i mean? and that’s okay

and like... the fact that i’m saying all of this... is a testament to how much this group means to me. i didnt say i hate any of the songs haha, cause i dont! trust me, you would know if i did. when i say im not really feeling Maison, that really just means that i’m kinda neutral on it. like... that just goes to show how good their discography is. if me feeling like a song is “decent, not bad, i’ll listen to it here and there” is the most negative i’ve been about a Dreamcatcher title track, then that just means their other title tracks must be absolutely insane haha. like, if that’s the lowest that the bar goes, that’s pretty good. 

i intended to just talk about the solos but i guess i had a lot more to say about Maison and stuff after listening to it more and processing my thoughts more haha. i’m not disappointed by it. i think i'm at the point where i’ll never be disappointed by a Dreamcatcher comeback no matter what, because they’re just in the Kpop Hall of Fame in my opinion lol, they can pretty much do no wrong. the only way i’d actually feel negatively about them at this point is if they did something that really felt like a betrayal, was really suberbly awful, something that tarnished everything they’d built over the years not just by being bad but also by flying in the face of everything they stand for, or something like that. like it couldnt just be a bad song, it would have to be morally bad too in order for me to even hate it lol. and Dreamcatcher are a group i can trust to never do that. there’s a 0% chance of that happening lol. the worst thing that will happen is that they might put out a couple more songs that i think are just kind of “okay” haha. like that’s it, that’s the worst case scenario. sooooo yeah. 

i’m just glad to be a fan of this group. whether i get obsessed with a comeback or not, i’ll always be an absolutely massive fan of them. i respect all 7 of them so much. i hope i’ve made that clear, and i’ve put my opinions about Maison in context, so you know that i’m not hating haha. i bet nobody actually read this far in this post though lol
