okami fun fact!

while all other characters in okami (as far as i know) are labeled with their canon names in issun’s paintings, shiranui is labeled NOT as 不知火 (shiranui) but as 初代 (shodai), which means “first era” or the “first one” in a line of something! it makes sense since he’s meant to be ammy from a hundred years ago. 

in this painting above, ammy is labeled 天照 (amaterasu) and oki is labeled オキクルミ (okikurmi). also, issun appears to sign his paintings as 天道太子 一寸 (tentou taishi issun), meaning “celestial envoy issun.” while the homophone 大使 (taishi) means “ambassador,” which is closer in meaning to envoy, the okami devs have written it 太子, which usually means “crown prince.” maybe they chose to do that to emphasize issun’s tiny size using the character 子, which means “child,” along with 太, which can refer to the sun? honestly i’m not sure. or maybe issun has since appointed himself ammy’s earthly heir LOL 🪲👑

anyways, i just thought this was kinda interesting! if anyone knows any other examples of this, please feel free to add them on!! またね :)

So, I recently acquired a button maker! I have a Tecre Model #225, which means it makes 2.25″ buttons. I hope to start offering them in my Etsy shop soon, as well as having them available at conventions!

Here are two designs I finished for a set of Okami buttons (yes, I'm planing on a few more). I already know that the Ammy one prints well, just need to test print Oki later. I'm pleased with how they turned out. Backgrounds represent the Sun and a Blue Moon.

Hoyau Kamuy [Ainu mythology]

Currently, there are a little over 10 000 Ainu people left in Japan, but these people have a rich tradition of folklore and mythology. The Kamuy (or Kamui) are a kind of spirits that play a central role in this religion. There are Kamuy of owls, of the moon, of snakes, etc. Hoyau Kamuy is the Kamuy of dragons.

Although this creature is often depicted as a giant winged goblin shark (and sometimes as a giant aquatic snake), it is a dragon spirit and apparently one of the more dangerous Kamuy, and it produced a powerful venom. During summer, its power grows, but in the winter it is weakened. In fact, it is often called “sak-somo-ayep” which roughly translates to “one who must not be mentioned during summer”. Since it detests the cold, it is known to possess shamanesses (“miko”) and command them to stoke fires. Some stories claim it can push other spirits out of the body of these shamanesses.

Legend has it that the deity Okikurmi defeated this monster with a cunning trick. The deity took on the form of a human and tricked the river-dwelling beast into visiting a village upstream. There it was approached by the villagers who offered it the hand of the elder’s daughter in marriage. The dragon accepted and the ceremony began, during which the dragon ate so much fish from the banquet that it got sick. The deity Okikurmi had used his magic to cast a potent illusion, for in reality there was no village, it was a giant hive of hornets whom the god had tasked with killing the dragon. And so, the evil beast was defeated. In another version, Okikurmi summoned a hailstorm, and the cold greatly weakened the monster so that Okikurmi could slay it with his divine sword.

Note that, depending on who you ask, there are multiple of these dragons, rather than a single individual. In fact, these dragons aren’t entirely evil and can act as local guardians to protect a village or location.  They could also provide divine blessings and offerings were brought to them during epidemics, to make the illness go away.

Gender Neutral Reader, They/Them pronouns reader is somewhat timid, teeth appreciation, sticking fingers until someone else’s mouth? (Y/n) used. You two are just friends but it’s implied you have feelings. Scent kink? Oki has a sharp sense of smell. 

Oki talks out loud. You aren’t sure if he’s talking to himself or you. If he is talking to you, you aren’t actually comprehending the words. You were too busy watching his fangs flash from under his mask. His voice is nice but his teeth are what keep your attention. Shamefully you think of them against you, biting, scraping anything Oki is willing to do. You try to remind yourself that you two were just friends. Did you want to be more.

“Are you even listening, (Y/N)?” Oki huffs. His arms crossed over his chest. You look down not wanting to meet his gaze. 

“What’s the point of telling you anything if you’re not going to listen,” he growls.

“What is distracting you so much anyway?” You can feel him having an unpleasant look under his mask. 

“I.. I was watching you talk…,” you look up at him from the corner of your eye. He seems to freeze before tilting his head, like a dog.

“Watching me talk? Why would you want to do that?” Oki’s voice is neutral with the exception of the questioning tone.

“Your… Your teeth,” you point to your own mouth for emphasis, opening it to show your teeth.They are much blunter compared to Oki’s.

“I like them a lot,” you hope he doesn’t want an explanation. Oki scratches the back of his head. 

“How come that seems weird.” Shit. Shutting your eyes tight, you try to center yourself. 

“I find your fangs and that hot. I want to touch them,” you finally respond. Not wanting to know Oki’s reaction, you attempt to exit the scene. It’s the shifting of Oki’s clothes and the clinking of his weapons that make you open your eyes.

He moved closer, arms uncrossed and hanging down to his sides. He seems to watch you for a moment. 

“Is that why you’re always aroused when I talk. Here I thought you liked my voice.” Oki teases.

“Your voice is nice too,” you shift in your place. Oki laughs, hand moving to adjust his mask. making it settle higher up on his face, mouth now fully exposed. You never noticed he had kissable lips up until now. 

He grins making sure to flash his white fangs for you. He’s teasing you, you know it. Deciding it’s now or never you reach over to slip some fingers into his mouth. He didn’t pull away or recoil inside, opening his mouth wider to accommodate your digits. 

All of his teeth were sharp, even the flat molars coming up to points. 

Gently running your fingers over the sharp edges. Fully aware that Oki could just bite down on your fingers anything he’d like. At the moment you felt his jaw move. You flinched thinking he was about to crush your fingers but he just carefully gripped them in between his teeth. Akin to what you’ve heard about dogs that can carry eggs without damaging them in their mouths.

Oki holds you there for a few seconds before reopening his mouth up. His vision is blocked by his mask so he just feels you searching around. He’s unsure what he feels about this but he’ll let you have your fun. 

You run your thumb over his canines, a little too carelessly, you ended up cutting your thumb on his canine but before you could remove your hands Oki grasped the injured hand. 

He ran his tongue over the cut a few times, before letting you pull away your hand. Oki then replaced his mask in the proper position after wiping drool off of his chin.

“It’s to help it heal, think nothing of it,” Oki says, voice gruff. Stopping you from asking any questions. From the distance you could hear Kai’s voice calling your names stopping you from asking questions even more. 

“Lika wants you two to come over for dinner!,” the deer masked woman yells from the village’s entrance. The two of you comply, moving to follow her. Walking in front you could feel the man’s stare on your back.
