Sun Wukong Knew About MK the Whole Time: A Theory
I am currently hyped up on leftovers and iced coffee, so let's do this!
I've talked about this before, here and here, but I think it's finally time I wrote an official post. You can go and read those posts if you want to (I definitely hit the nail on the head with some of this stuff), but I will be compiling a lot of what I said on those posts here!
So. Let's get the Mr. Elephant out of the room first: The David Breen Tweets. (thread here).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I see this tweet mentioned a lot whenever I bring up SWK knowing about MK, and honestly, this is a far cry from the "it's been confirmed that SWK didn't know" definite answer everyone's been implying.
So let's break it down!
#1: "Monkey King ain't the father"/"Monkey King isn't his dad." Well of course! Being born from a stone means you don't have any parents. I see it like this: Wukong isn't MK's dad, but he's also not NOT MK's dad, it's a secret third thing (creator and creation). Or, perhaps Wukong didn't help create MK at all, but he at the very least was involved in the circumstances that lead to MK being created/being born from the stone. (Aka eldritch abomination MK theory. My Beloved. Okay sorry.)
#2: "Monkey King was ripping his way through memories looking for MK, but kept coming back to the stone. He doesn't know why." So, while Wukong was ripping through memories, he didn't know why the scroll kept spitting him out by the stone. This is not a confirmation that Wukong didn't know about MK and his origins. It also begs the question: how did Wukong know MK was in the scroll to begin with? There's also some speculation to be had about why Wukong was so desperate to find MK to begin with:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MK: "Monkey King did this?" Macaque: "It looks like he's been tearing his way through his past—trying to find his way to.." MK: "Me."
(4x11 A Lifetime of Mistakes)
-
What was he so afraid of MK finding? Or, what was he afraid the scroll would force MK to experience? I think these are questions worth asking.
#3: "Wukong's trying real hard to leave the 'not being open with MK' days behind after s3. Problem is he's got lifetimes of info to catch them up on." Well, this one is a DOOZIE. One: we already know MK doesn't know everything about Wukong and his choices because he doesn't know Wukong killed Macaque (thank you 4x11). Two: "trying real hard" and "successfully doing" are very different things. And three: YOU DON'T JUST DROP INFO LIKE "Hey, did you know you're a Monkey Demon?" ON TOP OF SOMEONE RANDOMLY. Especially not MK. You have to prepare them for it.
Wukong is trying to do better and be better for everyone around him, but that still takes work. That still isn't easy. He's still going to make mistakes, which means he's not going to always go about being open with MK in the best way.
Tumblr media
Sun Wukong: “Point is, mistakes happen, but so long as you leave the world in better shape than you found it, then it’s all good. Right?”
(4x01 Familiar Tales)
-
This scene—to me—feels like Wukong is trying prepare MK for his eventual "Hey did you know you're a Monkey Demon?" conversation he wants (and needs) to have down the line. Yes, SWK is trying to be more open with MK, but he's also just not going to be given that chance before the truth comes out.
Tumblr media
MK: "Yeah right, if Monkey King really was my dad don't you think he would have said something by now?" Mei: "Yeah...because he's normally SOOOOO forth coming with information." MK: "Well uh, whatever—when we find Monkey King's stone, then we'll just ask him!"
(4x05 Court of the Yellow Robbed Demon)
-
Notice how they never asked Monkey King that question? From a writing standpoint, why bring this up at all if it wasn't to imply that (even if Monkey King isn't MK's dad) he wasn't involved with MK's creation in some way?
ANYWAYS.
NOW THAT THE BREEN TWEET THAT HAS RUINED MY LIFE IS OUT OF THE WAY, let's get into the evidence given to us throughout the entirety of the show. Starting with this:
Tumblr media
This isn't a scene that takes place during the "A Hero is Born" special, as I'm sure plenty of people have noticed before now. Of course, this could have just been Monkey King "scouting out a successor", but with everything we know now doesn't that...feel kinda weird?
We were told at the beginning of the show that Monkey King gave MK his powers, but now we know that's not true. MK has had his own powers this whole time—and that's something Wukong, at the very least, knew:
Sun Wukong: "Listen kid: You fought demons, and you didn't die, and you made it here! Not just anyone can lift my staff, but you did." (1x00 A Hero is Born)
-
MK: "This whole time, I thought my powers came from the staff! Sun Wukong: "The staff's just a big 'ol stick bud! It takes someone special to lift it." (3x03 Smartie Kid)
-
There's also 1x09 Macaque, which I have mentioned before:
Macaque: "Ohohoh no, can't you hold the magic staff anymore? Well, you know what that means—there really isn't anything special about you. You're just a kid with a heavy stick."
This scene is then followed by MK lifting the staff, which only happens because Wukong encourages him.
Tumblr media
MK: "Ugh, I can't! I'm not strong enough." Sun Wukong: "Kid! We're definitely going to have words later, but it's time for the Hero Stuff!"
(1x09 Macaque)
-
Ultimately, Wukong knows MK can lift the staff again even after Macaque supposedly stole all of MK's powers. He knows MK can beat DBK (more on that later). He does something similar to all this in 3x14, being the one to let MK face the Lady Bone Demon, powered by the Samadhi fire, alone (even after Pigsy tries to stop MK):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wukong want's to protect MK. That's why he went to face the Lady Bone Demon alone in the first place—but here, he let's MK stop the end of the world all by himself. Why would he let his beloved student face not only LBD, but a reality ending flame alone?
Because he knows how much power MK has. Because he knows MK is capable of doing it.
This all brings me to my main point: If before now we were supposed to believe that Monkey King gave MK his powers, and he so clearly didn't, how would Wukong not know he didn't give MK powers. And because he clearly knew he didn't give MK any powers, why would he not question where this kid's insane level of power came from? He had to have "chosen" MK to be his successor for a reason right?
ESPECIALLY because Wukong never planned on being a mentor in the first place:
Tumblr media
Sun Wukong: "I know I can never make it up to you. Honestly, I- I never thought I'd live as long as I have let alone be someone's mentor—turns out I'm not very good at it. I guess what I'm trying to say is...I'm sorry MK. For all of it."
(3x14 Destiny Fulfilled)
-
This was also alluded to in 3x05 Amnesia Rules:
Pigsy: "Of COURSE you don't remember the kid—one day you are going to grow up to be a terrible mentor!" Sun Wukong: "Ha! Zhu Bajie, can you imagine me teaching someone? HA!"
-
So, Wukong clearly didn't ever want to become a mentor, and this directly contradicts what Wukong says to MK in "A Hero is Born":
Sun Wukong: "You're perfect!" MK: "Perfect for what?" Sun Wukong: "To be...my successor!"
Honestly, think about it: has Wukong ever once actually needed a successor? When given the opportunity, he goes off and tries to handle things on his own anyways (Leaving in s2, wanting to go and reforge the Samadhi Fire on his own, going to stop LBD alone). It's the classic "we're being told one thing and shown another" trick.
Sun Wukong: "No no no- in case you forgot I'M retired, you're the one supposed to be taking care of the bad guys." (1x01 Bad Weather)
Tumblr media
Even in 2x01 he's lying:
Sun Wukong: "Aw, come on bud! I promised myself that when I found a successor I'd go see some friends, take a tour of my old stomping grounds, just cut loose you know?" (2x01 Sleep bug)
It's proven in the next episode, and by the fact that all of his friends are dead/gone, that literally nothing he said here is true.
And, it's also note worthy to point out, that by this point Wukong had already disappeared for hundreds of years. Why step in again at all? Why put the effort into getting a successor you definitely were never prepared to have?
Tumblr media
MK: "*sigh* You think Monkey King ever felt like this? Maybe that's why he stayed up on this mountain, just having a good time with you guys. You know cause- cause he knew he'd be out of the way where he couldn't hurt anyone he cared about." Macaque: "Or, he was doing his usual Wukong thing and being a lazy peach eating idiot. Ignoring all the worlds problems.
(4x09 Roast of the Monkie Kids)
-
So, I don't know about you, but I'm going to trust Macaque's insight on this. I'm not sure Wukong ever planned on coming back. Sealing DBK, he effectively cut off one of his last ties to the world (please go read wlw-wukong's thoughts, they are delightful), and he had already left the world alone for a long time. Why did he feel the need to train a successor now?
The simple answer is this: because he knew he needed to train MK and teach him to control his powers, and DBK's return was the perfect way to do it.
NOW. THE S4 MK VISIONS.
So, the visions MK see's all through out s4 (4x03, 4x04, 4x05, 4x06) are of Wukong ripping through the scroll and going to the stone—David Breen confirmed that himself in the above tweets.
Here's a list of what we see:
Tumblr media
(4x03 The Great Tang Man)
-
Tumblr media
(4x04 Pig Napped)
-
Tumblr media
(4x05 Court of the Yellow Robbed Demon)
-
These are what I would say are the visions of Sun Wukong trying to find MK in the scroll. Yet, they are distinctly different from what Subodhi presses MK to remember ("Tell me of your childhood, your parents." "You do not remember?" "And what else?"):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(4x06 Show Me the Monster)
-
Look at that difference!
Every vision MK has includes the same scenes, except this one. That's why I think it's a memory; that and the way it's framed, with MK closing his eyes in focus. The other visions from 4x03, 4x04, and 4x05 all are unprompted, being forced upon MK. Why make this last "vision" so different from the others? Why show our mystery lady making the stone monkey? That would be because it's a memory—be it MK's, something from the scroll, or a mix of both.
There's also the matter of like, why Wukong going to the stone would trigger any sort of vision in MK to begin with. Overall, it just seems like there something more to those visions.
This would be how I imagine the general timeline playing out:
MK is created (through help of Sun Wukong), a beautiful baby boy pops out of the stone, and Sun Wukong "loses" that beautiful boy (if Wukong knew he was born to begin with) with MK finding his way to Pigsy's.
Then it's later Sun Wukong finds MK again, coming up with a plan to make MK his "successor" (still leaving MK with Pigsy, which I think was the right call lol). As Wukong says in 4x01, "You make ONE mistake, and no one ever let's you live it down! Looks like the ghosts of my past have finally caught up with me." That's what I think this parallel in particular is really trying to show off—in some way, MK is part of his past mistakes, just like Macaque is.
AND SO. I WILL CLOSE OFF THIS THEORY POST WITH EVERYTHING WE LEARNED IN THE SPECIAL.
Sun Wukong: "Heh, nothing gets under his skin more than a monkey. Leave Azure to MK and me."
(4x12 The Plan Man)
-
Tumblr media
Sun Wukong: "Kinda embarrassing for the Jade Emperor to have two little cheeky monkeys running circles around him the first day on the job." MK: "Well, one monkey and one unconfirmed, but *laughs* yeah! I'd be embarrassed for sure!"
(4x13 Rip and Tear)
-
Wukong sounds suspiciously confident that MK is a monkey.
Not even MK is sure what he is (which he's probably just in denial, but also "Until I know what I am, what my destiny is?" from 4x08 anyone?), but Sun Wukong is extremely certain about what MK is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sun Wukong: "We got this bud. Would have liked to give you some new training with your monkey form, but-" MK: "Oh yeah yeah yeah- uh um- about that— um. I- I was thinking, I've never really needed a scary new monkey form before, so, I just thought maybe I'd use it next time." Sun Wukong: "Next time? Kid, there might not be a next time! This is the time."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MK: "It's be fine! Mei and I have got this awesome new armor and everything! You know, when we look this good? Ain't nothing gonna beat us." Sun Wukong: "Kid. New armor isn't going to cut it! We have to hit Azure with everything we've got! You can't just ignore this whole part of your power because it scares you!"
(4x12 The Plan Man)
-
If the writers were trying to highlight the fact that Wukong didn't know, this scene would have gone very differently. Instead of "You can't just ignore this whole part of your power because it scares you!" I think it would have been more along the lines of "I know this is new for all of us, but you've got to accept this part of your power!".
Even this exchange at the end of the special raises some alarm bells for me:
Pigsy: "Heh, don't bother. I've been telling him that for years but he LITERALLY never listens." Sun Wukong: "Yep! That's how we roll."
(4x14 Better Than We Found It)
-
That's how "we" roll? As in him and MK, as two monkeys? Again, Wukong is surprisingly chill and okay with this new form for someone whose first interaction with it was supposedly this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MK, writhing on the ground in pain, completely destroying the world around him, and unable to control his powers.
Tumblr media
Sun Wukong: "Yeah! Go MK, go! Just try not to totally wreck up my stuff would ya-"
(4x13 Rip and Tear)
-
Overall, it gives me the impression that Wukong already knew what MK was before 4x07. This new form didn't scare him because he always knew that's what MK was. MK, to Wukong, is MK! And MK has always been a Monkey Demon. He has unshakeable faith in his protege, and even while MK is absolutely tearing up the world around flower fruit mountain he can't help but cheer for him.
After all, Wukong knows MK is the only one who could defeat Azure:
Tumblr media
MK: "Ne Zha's right—while Azure has the Jade Emperor's power and the scroll, there's NO way we could beat him head on!" Sun Wukong: "I mean, some of us could beat him! *ahem* One of us, specifically-" MK: "Nope! None of us at all."
(4x12 The Plan Man)
-
"But Imp!" I hear you say, "Wukong was talking about himself here!". To which I would reply, that's not true! This scene is right after Wukong has already said he only almost beat the Jade Emperor:
Sun Wukong: "But don't worry—I almost beat the Jade Emperor single handed once! Between both of us, Azure doesn't stand a chance." (4x12 The Plan Man)
-
Between this and Wukong's pre-fight convo with MK ("We have to hit Azure with everything we've got!"), he's clearly banking on MK using the full extent of his powers to win this fight. Wukong isn't banking on his own—if he were, he would never have left MK to go and collect the scroll pieces during their fight with Azure.
Conclusion
Sun Wukong knew MK was a monkey the whole time, lol—and fate has plans for MK. Great plans, or foul? Time will tell.
And Wukong has done his best to ensure that those plans are great.

in case this is interesting (?) to anyone else. while talking to @weaksspot we were like, does sam ever say “ain’t”? so i researched, because apparently i miss uni.
Tumblr media
total tally: DEAN: 107 instances | SAM: 16 instances (detailed list under the cut)
notes:
* out of sam’s 16 total instances, two of them are from soulless!sam
** season 10: out of dean’s 11 instances, four of them are from demon!dean
*** season 15: out of dean’s 2 instances, one of them is from young!dean in a flashback
bobby is the king of “ain’t” but i was too lazy to count him.
basis for analysis: spnwiki transcripts (which does mean that the results of the tally may be skewed, obviously) with the help of spntranscriptsearch
hypotheses and theories:
DISPROVEN: as sam distances himself more and more from his college life (where he may have tried to drop the dialect to fit in with his peers), he assimilates to dean’s speech patterns over time
DISPROVEN (kind of): the episodes where sam says “ain’t” were written by the same people - 3/14 episodes each were written by Ben Edlund and Andrew Dabb respectively; but at the end of the day it all comes down to jarpad, really. i can’t imagine that the scripts decide whether actors use “aren’t” or “ain’t” (?)
UNRESOLVED: why was dean (quote) “cowboying it up” so much in s7. you could argue that if this development had happened in s8 that it were related to purgatory and his proximity to benny (who obviously uses the contraction liberally). but what was going on here
UNRESOLVED: what the hell happened after s10
results:
none. there is no rhyme or reason to any of this

Bad Day=Binging ScarNash
I had an interesting day today. Not in a good way. So as one does in such a situation, I went back to rewatch ScarNash. Cuz they’re my comfort ship.
This is just me reviewing almost every scene of the episode so I can forget that life exists for a little while🙃
Today I picked 4x04. And goodness I do not regret it one bit.
Starting with Patrick and the fat goose line. I’m sorry but why did that have to be so damn funny. “My fellow punters…” and “copious amounts of whiskey”, with his very Frank expression shifted my mood from stressed to joyful immediately. And I only now noticed that as Patrick and Eliza leave to meet Carter, Eliza yeets a paper in Clarence’s direction (or at least she tried).
I applaud Clarence’s “shit the parents are gonna argue if I don’t step in” senses. We love him for them.
I’m gonna make a rare mention of William, but I felt so bad for him when Ivy started talking about her mom’s gout. If I was eating anything resembling her description, I would gag to no end. Ruined the poor dudes snack.
Watching Patrick panic is probably my favorite part of this episode. Bros just pacing up, down, round and round, trying to think of what to do. (He’s literally just me but toned down and with an adult brain 😂)
That scene at Fallons was perfect. That unanimous “who?”, and the cover up that “we do love a little gossip now and then.”. It’s adorable and funny to see these to be in such sync and in such odds as they are.
Also, idk if anyone else noticed but she’s holding his ARM in the stables scene?! How-wha-why did I not notice that?
Poor Fitzroy. He could’ve had a much nicer career with his father out of the way. He’s known for being his father’s son, this way he could learn to be his own man.
We gotta talk about that cab scene. Literally, Patrick was trying to make things better by saying “it’s not your fault they left”, and just made it worse by adding “it’s mine, I should’ve never left you in charge”. She looked so genuinely offended by what he said, only to be shut down cuz they were literally in the middle of investigating.
Then they just break into Fallon’s office like it’s nothing and start bickering about the resignations again. She said she didn’t fire any of them. And then she admitted to firing multiple. Which is great I guess. So… we have that. Then they just hop through the office when someone comes in. Like. They have no right to be this adorable. Why are they literally my grandparents on steroids.
Turns out the lines about Eliza sulking started in this episode, which clearly adds to why she’s pissed when he spends the entirety of 4x05 just telling her she’s sulking and she should not sulk.
Then we have scene where Patrick’s pacing again. And I don’t blame him for making Eliza nervous too. Like he said “good I don’t see why I should suffer alone” (which is a quote I’ve been using way to much in real life recently lol)
Clarence makes his grand entry with some food and the info that Gibson is here. 🙃
And I’m finally going to end on those last two scenes of them together (cuz I skipped William kissing Eliza)
Them blackmailing Carter was hilarious. I mean, we know both of them were hella nervous cuz he could’ve just gunned both of them down there but that’s whatever. I love the little voice moderations and the expressions Eliza and Patrick pass each other basically saying “he’s agreed, now let’s get the hell out of here before he changes his mind and kills us”
Then we got Patrick praising Eliza. That could’ve played out to be an even more heartfelt scene had Eliza not seen the time and ran off. He looked disappointed, but he seemed to let it go (unlike William would’ve as we know) , understanding she probably forgot to do something .
Makes me sad seeing potential like this being flushed down a toilet.

They’re an old married couple and I love that for them🙃

considering Rayla has absolutely buggered Aaravos’ plans multiple times in S6 if he were to posses Callum again do you think he’d go straight for killing Rayla?
Yeah she's been the last minute fuck up of Aaravos' plans now twice - which considering her "I am pretty awesome at everything... right up until the moment it really matters" choking at the finish line complex - is so on brand for them as a foils dynamic it actually drives me insane now that it's a parallel that could turn into a pattern. But post for another day
I think that if Runaan coin stuff leaves Ezran and Rayla at odds for a time in S6, wanting to save a brainwashed Callum may be what brings them back together in terms of that initial rift. As much as I want some broyals angst & fluff next season, I do think ultimately Rayla will have the bigger role to play in the possession plot line, simply because it's been set up that way, for a few years:
Aaravos specifically taunts Rayla with being unable to kill in 4x04 only for that to be precisely what Callum asks Rayla to do in 4x07. That's a plot beat / choice and set up that has to be paid off eventually
Furthermore, Rayla is the one emphasized more in said scenario. She's the one catching Callum and stepping toward him at first in 4x04, she's the one interrupting Callum with the mirror in 4x02, and she's the one to explicitly tell him he has another path in 4x07. They also cut to a shot with her directly when Callum says "he'll [...] hurt people I care about" which - Yeah
S5 actually furthered this thread of Aaravos-Rayla tethering. Whereas twice in S4 people think Callum is going to talk about Rayla when he actually talks about Aaravos, S5 switches it up with Callum's research into Aaravos being derailed by his devotion to Rayla (5x01: "Your elf friend is in trouble" / 5x04: "But you can trust me to stay focused" whereas Callum immediately loses focus because of her). 5x08, in which Callum is willing to help someone murder an Archdragon and to do dark magic in order to save her, likewise has the Callum-Aaravos intro.
Callum and Rayla watching a literal falling star together in 5x02, all of Rayla's associations of being light, etc.
This all ties together, then, of Rayla likely being the one to save Callum from the brainwashing (even if she also is, come hell or high water, what leads to him being brainwashed again in the first place - kinda like how Viren's love for his family doomed him at first and then also brought him back from the brink again in S5). This has been foreshadowed in a few ways / would be payoff for a few different ways.
Rayla being associated with light and Callum's agency (even if the light isn't always good and agency isn't always that simple, which is already in line with the flashing white cube in 4x04 and 5x08 as Callum is Aaravos' pawn). Also these lines from the book one novelization, which drive me crazy every time: “So they might kill you or they might save you,” Callum said. “Exactly.” Rayla smiled. “Just like me.” (—Book One: Novelization)
S5 puts Rayla's selflessness on full display, as she doesn't prioritize her parents once and instead Callum is the one who pushes forward on that front, even while acknowledging that "The world needs me. Callum and Ezran need me" still go basically hand-in-hand with her. While the "stronger together" is something she's learning (with practice) and is something that Callum may need to re-learn to a degree, Rayla's tendency to sacrifice hasn't been really dismantled yet. Her refusing to sacrifice something - in this case, a possessed Callum - by refusing to kill him (even if it puts the world at risk) would be a big, meaningful step forward for her, and is I think where they're headed.
On that note: S4 opened up an interesting character aspect for her with "we can't save everyone" regarding the drake in 4x05 that again, S5 has kind of left unaddressed for now, so Rayla and Callum both reconciling their identities - Callum, through reconciling the light and dark inside him and being brought out of possession (moon arcanum time?); and Rayla, being someone who can save people and depend on them without always having to sacrifice herself - could work really well if she's the one who breaks him free. Chains and keys and "That's your name right - Callum?" and "She's not the elf, she's Rayla" and "You're the destiny is a book you write yourself guy" and "That's what makes her a hero. That's what makes her Rayla" etc.
Finnegrin implies that Callum's love for Rayla makes him weak ( "All that talk about how love makes you stronger, but the second you see that elf girl in pain") and foolish. Impulsive, irrational. Opeli implies it to a much lesser degree, but that's still why she cautions Callum in 5x01. If "losing control" is synonymous with Rayla for Callum, it just means that Aaravos losing control of Callum probably will be as well.
Love is good and bad. Strength and weakness. The ocean and dark magic. Light and dark. Control and liberation.
I think we'll see all of that reflected in the possession plot line going ahead in S6.

do you know significant dates for community episodes like for example december 10th for comparative religion (idk does make sense)
yes I think I get what you mean.
so, actually, for seasons 1-3, I’m pretty sure the dates the episodes aired, for the most part, line up with when the episode is meant to take place within the community universe. it's convenient that american networks have a similar schedule to the american school year, so it makes the timeline of shows set at schools line up pretty well with dates in the real world. this is no longer true for seasons 4-6, as they were likely pushed to midseason (making the season start airing in january/february and still end around may, making it half as long). so, for example, the season 4 halloween episode aired on february 14th, 2013. the halloween episodes for seasons 1-3 all, obviously, aired very close to halloween.
I do have some specific examples that support this, if the simple fact of the school year and network schedule lining up isn’t enough. as you said, in 1x12 comparative religion, they mention multiple times that it is december 10th. that episode did, in fact, air on december 10th, 2009. same with 2x11 abed's uncontrollable christmas; they mention that it is december 9th, and the episode aired on december 9th, 2010.
all this yapping to say: for seasons 1-3, a lot of the episode air dates are likely compliant with the in-universe set date. although, I do doubt that they had specific dates in mind for every single episode. it's just not super relevant. but, if you really wanted an estimate, I would consult this list of community episodes, which includes the date each episode was aired.
but, to more directly answer your question, I'm going to try to compile a list of episode dates I'm 100% sure about.
1x12 comparative religion: december 10th, 2009
2x10 mixology certification: december 4th, 2010
2x11 abed's uncontrollable christmas: december 9th, 2010
4x05 cooperative escapism in familial relations: november 22nd, 2012
not as long as I would have hoped, but ofc it's entirely possible there's things I missed.
to dive deeper, here's a list of episode dates I’ve speculated:
1x05 advanced criminal law: october 15th, 2009 (in contemporary impressionists, abed says that he and troy made a deal: "october 15th, friends don't lie to each other." this parallels their story in 1x05, and the 5th episode of season 1 being in october makes sense logistically in the canon. this episode also aired on october 15th, so it lines up in that way too. this episode does span across multiple days, though, so october 15th would just be one of the days included in the ep)
2x04 basic rocket science: october 16th, 2010 (this episode aired on october 14th, 2010, which is a thursday. they mention in the episode that it's a saturday, and the 16th is the saturday closest to the air date)
2x19 critical film studies: march 24th, 2011 (this is the date this episode aired, and is the generally accepted date for abed's birthday)
3x07 studies in modern movement: november 12th, 2011 (the episode aired on november 10th, 2011, which is a thursday. again, the mention in the episode that it is a saturday, and the 12th is the saturday closest to the air date)
3x10 regional holiday music: december 8th, 2011 (following the trend of the two previous christmas episodes, which took place on the last day of classes. again, this episode spans multiple days, so december 8th is theoretically the date of the episode's final scene)
5x11 g.i. jeff: november 20th, 2013 (this one is a little rougher. jeff's actual date of birth is a whole other can of worms, but it was originally listed as the same as joel mchale's, which is november 20th. a lot of people accept this as jeff's birthday. although, it is a little hard to justify for me, for one specific reason. if season 5 is supposed to span across an entire school year, and there's only 13 episodes, episode 11 should logically be sometime in the spring, not in november. so, either there is a months-long gap between episode 11 and episodes 12 & 13 (in order to make the finale line up with the end of the school year), or season 5 is only supposed to cover the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year. but, again, that is kind of weird, giving that all the other seasons cover the entire school year. the air date, however, is april 3rd, 2014. so. I could go on and on about theories on backtracking in the writers' room and whatever else, and I will if you want me too, but for now I think I've written enough. believe what you want about this one)
holiday episodes are kind of a whole other issue. you have to take the date of the actual holiday, the air date of the episode, and logically how the celebration would interfere with an actual school day, and try to extrapolate a canonical episode date. (ik I put the season 3 christmas episode in the list above, but I'm more sure about that one than any of the episodes I’m about to list) idk if you even want me to do this, so I’ll try to make it quick.
1x07 introduction to statistics: aired on thursday 10/29/2009, halloween was saturday 10/31/09. ep is centered around an after-school party, so I’d guess it's actually set on friday 10/30/09.
1x16 communication studies: aired on thursday 2/11/2010, valentine's day was sunday 2/14/2010. I’m pretty sure the dance is on a school day, so I’d guess it's actually set on friday 2/12/2010.
2x06 epidemiology: aired on thursday 10/28/2010, halloween was sunday 10/31/2010. I'd guess this dance was on either friday or saturday, although I have no clue which one. so, I'd guess either 10/29/2010 or 10/30/2010.
2x15 early 21st century romanticism: aired on thursday 2/10/2011, valentine's day was monday 2/14/2011. the episode description says it's set actually on valentine's day. I tried looking at liverpool v. man u soccer games, but the only one in the spring of 2011 is on march 6th, which is the opposite of helpful. all I know is it's set on a school day. maybe they actually did have a dance on a monday, or maybe it was the friday before (2/11/2011). who knows.
3x05 horror fiction in seven spooky steps: aired on thursday 10/27/2011, halloween was on monday 10/31/2011. based on vibes alone I think this one is set on a saturday, but idk. so, I’m guessing saturday 10/29/2011.
I'm not going to list the halloween and christmas episodes from season 4, because the season 4 timeline is so irrevocably fucked up. (it's the first time the show was pushed to mid-season, so the air dates don't match up with the canonical ones whatsoever, jeff "graduates a semester early," but they celebrate christmas and go into the spring semester while he's still attending school, etc etc etc). in conclusion, I wouldn't recommend trying to make any sense out of any season 4 canonical dates. whatever.
seasons 5 and 6 don't ever really mention specific dates (as far as I remember), and, like I mentioned earlier, they are half-length seasons, so the air dates don't really match up with the school years anymore, so it's all kind of up in the air. you could potentially try to go in and analyze things further, but I'm not going to do that right now. I could do it in the future if someone really wants me to, or if you guys think it's worth doing? but in this moment I don't think it's worth it. I’ve already written WAY too much to answer a simple question LMAO. anyway.
I do want to reiterate that there Probably aren't specific canonical dates in mind for most of these episodes. but yk. it's fun to speculate I suppose. I hope this was somewhat helpful, and I am once again opening the floor to anyone who has anything I missed 💯💯💯

Your top 5 Lucy is a confident badass moments
Ooooh! I was not expecting this question and it took me a while to figure out a complete answer. I'm also 100% sure I missed some because I didn't comb through every episode or anything. And let's be honest, she's a badass all. the. time.
In no particular order:
#1: DOD and everything in the aftermath
I mean. I don't even need to explain this one, right? Our girl has some serious grit. She's fierce and she's smart and she's a fighter and she never ever gives up, not even in the aftermath when she's faced with working through the worst trauma of her life. And yes, trauma forever changes you, but the fact that she's just as kind and empathetic on the other side is amazing.
Tumblr media
#2: 3x06 UC op
The way she just dives in headfirst and comes up with a backstory on the fly? And then digs up all that Tagalog and chemistry knowledge from years ago to keep her cover and keep herself alive? I'm firmly of the belief that long-term undercover work isn't a good fit for Lucy and the life she wants, but there's absolutely no doubt that she's an incredibly skilled UC.
Tumblr media
#3: 3x13-14 UC preparation and op
Every piece of her storyline in these two episodes is badass, but really the moment that stands out to me the most is the very end of 3x13 when Nyla organizes the fake kidnapping. You can see it's triggered her so so badly, and watching her ground herself and then talk their way out of it highlights her grit and tenacity.
Tumblr media
#4: 5x11 domestic violence storyline
That scene in Kyra's house could have ended so badly. It was really just the perfect combination of badassery and empathy that only Lucy could manage that kept everyone alive.
(I can't find a gif of that moment, this was the closest one)
Tumblr media
#5: 5x22 fight scene
Everything about this scene. The fact that Lucy is the one with the plan and that Tim just executes it without question. The fact that they take out so many of these guys. The fact that they make it out alive. This is really more of a Chenford are badass scene but I'm including it here anyway. It was 100% a team effort; neither one of them could have managed this alone.
Tumblr media
Honorable mentions:
1x01: arresting the guy on her way in
I mean, what an entrance. From day one, even when she stumbles right out of the gate with Tim, you know she has it in her!
Standing up to Tim from 1x01-2x01
I know this is badass in a different way, but it took some serious guts to call him out. The man was like a bomb waiting to go off, and he could have ended her career at any time, and yet she really never hesitated.
2x07 in the booby trapped house
Again, the grit and tenacity on display here is impressive.
4x05 laundry room scene
I think all of us were Tamara in that moment lol.
5x07 and every other UC moment not listed above
Because she's just so damn good at it.

Chenford - Lucy Chen / Tim Bradford - The Rookie - Season 5 - Ep 17
"The Enemy Within" AKA Chenford Sucks at Babysitting
I've been so caught up in life (mostly great stuff) that I almost forgot it was Chenford night! Gee wiz!
But, for those following along:
we got an amazing deal on a car
we're this close to picking a roof vendor
I have another regular client for a few months
might have one more big contract coming in
See!? Good. Just busy.
SPOILER ALERT: I like spoilers very very much. If you don't, please run away. I will spoil the entirety of the episode and the whole series that has come before that if the Meta demands it.
All squared away? Awesomesauce. Let's dive in.
"Hi. Uh, don't hate me." "What did you do?"
Tim is actually smiling when he sees her scurry up to him, versus last episode when he was scowling.
He can't even look at her as he asks his question, because they just weathered the storm of Tim Metro Jenga and now what!?
"No, you're supposed to say, 'I could never hate you.'"
Tim throws a look her way, and we all know that while Tim could never hate Lucy, that's not the point. He needs to know what she did and fast because his imagination's already running wild.
"Fine. I got mad at you a few months back after a Tim Test."
Because she hopped in a TARDIS and took a trip back in time.
Look, I know the timeline on this show can be a counter to reality, considering the first year of the show was about 3.5 years. But we know from 4x05 to 5x06 was a year because both episodes take place on Halloween.
Tim and Lucy started dating in 5x10, and it was "a few weeks" by the time we got to 5x12. So, we're at least a few months past Halloween, meaning that Tim hasn't put Lucy through a Tim Test in well over a year and a half.
Now, it's possible Lucy has no concept of time, but I'll admit the line took me out the first time I heard it because I try to keep track of the timeline for the sake of these Metas.
Is it a ridiculous thing to be bothered by? Abso-friggin-lutely. And totally attributable to Lucy's inability to keep track of time. Her pregnancy might feel like a decade and her first child's first year in a blink of an eye.
I hear that's how it goes for people who have one kid, at least. My twin pregnancy was a breeze compared to my second pregnancy with my daughter, and the twins' first year was... survival.
What matters is—Lucy was so pissed she set Tim up.
"Which one?" "Oh, weird, I honestly don't remember. But, so, that's not important." "What did you do?"
Tim's mouth is open the whole time she's talking, just waiting for her to give him a straight answer. He knows this is bad with how much she's stammering and starting over.
"I signed you up to be a Make a Dream mentor and then I totally forgot about it. I'm sorry." "For when?" "Today."
Tim's eyebrows shoot up to the sky and his hand automatically rises in protest. Lucy's hands rise to meet them, and his falls away.
It's a part of their dance. Yes, this sounds like I'm high. No, I'm not high (and never have been in my life). I'm connecting dots over here! ... Which also makes it sound like I'm high.
Have you ever noticed how Tim and Lucy shift based on the other, sometimes? When they're outside the plane in 5x01 and they're holding onto one another, there's a sway to their movements. They do it, again, in 5x12 right before Lucy disrobes her honey so she can eat him up. *ahem*
Tim and Lucy have a feel for each other. For the space the other occupies. There are times when occupying the same space is a very good thing, of course. But there are other times where they simply shift to make room for the other.
It's such a sweet, subtle thing that is more than likely good blocking and/or actor instinct. But it makes for such a beautiful visual of give-and-take with Chenford. It's mesmerizing.
"It's a good thing... lifting up a sick kid who's having a really hard time. What could you possibly be doing with your day that would be more important than that?
Lucy grabs onto his arm and he spins back to face her. Most of the time, it's small, open-handed touches from Lucy when they're at work. But this time she full-on handles her future husband to get his attention.
"Nice job boxing me in" "Thank you."
Tim's mad-impressed with his woman. If he wasn't so pissed, he might suggest they slip into a closet Wopez style for a quickie.
Lucy gives Tim the most adorable little bow, like a performer appreciating the applause.
"Where are you going?" I gotta go out on patrol." "You are me are gonna be entertaining our Make a Dream kid together."
Because if I have a kid, that means you have a kid. Like, it's already a foregone conclusion for these two.
Remember, Lucy knows that Tim wants kids, and thought he'd have some by now. Tim knows Lucy wants kids because she talked at length with him about her ovaries (even when he didn't want her to).
They're on the same page. Someday (not right now) there are gonna be little Chenford babies running around.
But right now, let's see if these two can handle one kid for a day.
"What else could you possibly do with your day that's more important?" "Yeah, right. I should have seen that coming."
You really should have. And while I'm curious about the logistics of this, considering he's not her supervisor, anymore, so he can't decide what she does with her day, I'm totally willing to suspend disbelief and have some fun.
Chenford + Kid? This'll be fun!
"This is my son Jordy. Say hi." "Hi. I hear you wanna be a cop." "Yeah." "Okay, well, you're gonna be hanging out with us today." "So, I just pick him up at 3?" "We'll take good care of him."
Tim has a smile for the kid when Jordy arrives, but it's not his "stop kissing my girlfriend you asshat" face he usually reserves for Chris. This is that smile he often reserves for kids—welcoming and sincere, yet still subtle. You can see it on his face with the Little League team earlier this season.
Also, I'm very curious about how this system works. I know I'm that weird Mom who wants to watch her kids' dance and Ninja classes, but I've signed waivers with those places, too. So, did Lucy forge Tim's signature on a waiver of some kind? That would be an interesting fanfic!
Also, the use of "we" and "us" still gets me. You'd think I'd be bored of it considering they've been knocking boots a while, now, but inclusive language makes me warm and fuzzy inside.
This is what happens when someone with two communications degrees writes a Meta. I'm so, so sorry.
"So, I'm thinking Processing. Wanna take your fingerprints? Get a mugshot taken?
Tim is so cute with kids! He's really trying to give this kid a fun day, even though this is not how he planned to spend his day.
Lucy's little dance in this scene had me rolling, too. We're so getting a sneak-peek at these two as parents. Spoiler Alert... they've got some work to put in. Thank God the first year is (as Bradley Whitford said in one of my favorite shows) "an on-ramp".
"Okay. Give me your meanest face." "Now look miserable."
Is it weird that Tim reminds me of my dad in this scene? Doesn't help that it's hilarious, and my Dad's an ex-standup comic. Yes, I mean it. Never feed that man a straight line.
But this kid does look miserable. Poor thing looks like he'd rather be anywhere else than at a police station.
"This doesn't exactly feel like making dreams come true." "He looks like he hates us."
Because he does. He hates your guts. It's finally happened... someone hates Chenford.
And, I know in reality there's always someone who hates something. I hate mushrooms. My husband loves them. It does nothing to the mushroom's opinion of life that I don't want to eat it while Matthew does.
But the fact that this kid's literally mean-mugging Chenford had me rolling.
Also, Tim has his arm up on the counter before Lucy approaches. When she does, his arm moves out of the way so her arm can rest there. It's their dance—always making space for one another.
THEY LOST THE KID.
I wrote this over here, then glanced at Twitter and briefly wondered if we were going to have this as a trending topic because... oh my gosh, two cops just lost a kid.
And, look, kids can be sneaky. When my Eldest was 3, he decided to play Hide and Seek at 10PM and forgot to tell us.
We searched the entire house and were about to call 911 (even though he couldn't yet unlock the doors and they were all deadbolted shut) when I finally called out that we were going to throw away toys if he didn't come out.
He was standing on the sill of our bay window with the curtains almost flat against him because he was so tiny. I sobbed, hugged him, and told him that he couldn't play hide and seek without telling us first.
My kid didn't even mean to be sneaky. This kid clearly does.
"We didn't lose him. We misplaced him."
He's not a ballpoint pen, Timothy. You lost a person.
"How can you be so calm? What if this was your kid?"
The kid is inside a police station with lots of good people to watch out for him. Believe me, it could be worse.
"You know what, if we ever lose our kids, I'm gonna need you to take this a lot more seriously." "Hold up, our kids would know better than to pull a stunt like this."
Y'all expecting or something!?
And, no, this is not a question you should ever, ever ask anyone in real life no matter what.
I can't tell you how many times people asked, "Why aren't you pregnant, yet?" and I wanted to scream, "Because I don't ovulate, have a tilted sacrum, have endometriosis, and a preferential tube... but thanks for reminding me of the failed procedures, tests, and attempts at pregnancy. Really appreciate it."
But, since Tim and Lucy are fictional... I'm wondering if we're being set up for a surprise pregnancy.
Like, I think Lucy would definitely want to make her mark, first, with UC before purposefully conceiving. But, my mother knew a couple who twice got pregnant through three kinds of birth control used simultaneously. It can happen.
No matter what's coming down the line show-wise, I love how casually they are talking about it. This isn't a maybe for them, but an actuality. They truly believe that they will be parents together. And I believe it, too!
Tim remarks that they're doing well so far, and I wonder if something was cut for time. Maybe not, but it twinkles at my brain that I feel like I'm missing something.
Maybe that's just the fact I haven't had dinner, yet. Definitely missing some calories today! And Tim and Lucy are definitely missing their first kid together (second if we count Tamara).
"I found this kid wandering around and he said he belongs to you."
Their first time at a water park, this is so gonna happen. I can't tell you how many times I was on set, separated from my mother, and a random person would take one look at me and say, "Your mother's over there."
"He kept asking me what my childhood pet's name was."
This sounds like a scam. Like, remember the early days of the internet when we all did a/s/l? And then it evolved into these elaborate quizzes to post that were really data-mining schemes? Yeah... good times.
This kid's a walking BuzzFeed quiz. Beware, Aaron. Don't hit "submit"!
"What kinda kid doesn't like dogs?" "Tim."
I love her exasperation, here, but I also kinda want to write a love letter to Melissa O'Neil on all the different ways she says, "Tim" in this one episode.
I'll never forget this one actor on a movie my mother keyed who asked me to run lines with him. There was this short line he had me say over and over and over, again.
He was trying to get me to understand the many different ways you can say a line and how that can change its meaning. Kid-Rachel didn't quite get it, but adult Rachel looks back on that moment with fondness.
Melissa O'Neil really personifies that lesson in this episode. Here, Lucy's exasperated. Later, shocked and chastising. Later, still, enamored. It's one bloody word, "Tim", and yet her performance brings it to life in different ways every time. Beautiful.
THEY LOST THE KID, AGAIN
While I've been waxing poetic, Chenford's lost the damn kid, again!
"This is ridiculous."
Watching Tim and Lucy walking down the hall aghast and worried... Yup, this is totally their future. Tim's going to air-tag their kid to keep them from wandering off after this little experience.
Tim On One Knee
I know I wasn't the only Chenford-ian experiencing flash-forwards on that one. Also, the last time we saw Tim on his knees by the Shop he was looking for diamonds (also with Lucy). And now it's a kid.
Yes, this is reaching. Like, this is reaching past your cousin Burt to dip your latke in the applesauce reaching. But, come on, it's right there. I didn't even have to work for that parallel!
"I really hope you're enjoying your revenge for that Tim Test." "I'm really not. Come on."
And light-hearted as this adventure is, it's kinda perfect that Lucy's choice in "revenge" was something that would be helpful to someone else.
In an ideal situation, this kid would want to be here. And annoyed as Tim would be to lose his day, he would actually enjoy helping a kid. Because, Tim likes kids.
Lucy likes to screw with Tim. Not make his life (and hers, by extension, now) hell.
"If someone I worked for tried to put me in a wood chipper, I'd flip on them." "If someone you worked for tried to put you in a wood chipper, they'd be in the wood chipper."
I freakin love Angela. I know that this is a Chenford meta, but Nyla saying that was so badass and so true. My #3 is a fighter.
"What the hell are you doing?"
Ooooh, Tim broke out a curse word in front of a child. And, yeah, the kid broke into a secure police system, so it was warranted.
"Okay, do you even have cancer?" "Tim." "That part's true."
Look, it's out of line, but I totally get it. Tim doesn't trust people to begin with. He believes it has to be earned, but he cut this kid a break at the onset. Now, he realizes this kid played him and he's pissed.
But Lucy was right to call Tim out with a gentle admonishment using only his name because Melissa O'Neil if a rockstar who can convey all that with a single syllable.
"Okay, but you lied about wanting to be a cop." "Of course. Cops are whack."
The way I was rolling during that part. The way Tim and Lucy immediately look to one another? Priceless.
Also, Tim was kinda right. The kid does hate them.
"He said if I could figure out a way to get rid of his tickets, he'd buy me an ebike."
Asshole Dad. Poor kid. Like, yes, this kid is old enough to know the difference between right and wrong.
But so was Tim when he covered for his father's affair. These are children whose decisions are being influenced and informed by the adults around them.
"You are a criminal, Mr. Yates. And you made your son one, too."
I can't even imagine how hard this is. Because Jordy is a child, and he's already facing all the elements of childhood cancer. Adding charges on top of it?
And we all know that Tim won't charge the kid. But his dad's a different story. Tim has a problem with parents who hurt their children—be it physical or emotional.
"I can't go to jail. My family needs me."
This wordless communication is my favorite part of the entire episode.
At the beginning of their story, Tim and Lucy spoke completely different languages. Let's say Tim was barking in Latin and Lucy's finessed in French. There's enough root words to comprehend, but not truly understand one another.
Over time, they've learned one another's languages to the point that they don't even need words anymore. Tim has softened where Lucy has become more crisp and refined.
Lucy's look to Tim is a plea. There's so much to what this man is saying. Yes, he's clearly broken the law with all those parking passes, and then persuading his sick son to try to get rid of them.
But losing his license and car creates an added burden on this already-hurting family. This man is desperate. Dumb, yes. But desperate.
"His medical costs are killing us" struck me hard. On paper, my family looks good financially, right? But then there's the medical costs. Mine. My kids'. I'm on so many payment plans trying to stay on top of it.
So, an innocent bill might seem like nothing, but when paychecks are inconsistent and things break down one. after. the. other... it leaves us exposed. Matthew got a speeding ticket last month, and if not for his "taking no time off this month" bonus from the school, it wouldn't have been covered.
So, I get the fear and desperation. I'm just not as dumb as this guy.
Meeting her eyes, Tim's eyebrows shoot up. "Are you kidding me?" they say. In one look, he knows what she wants.
Look. How. Far. We've. Come.
It used to be that he was oblivious... then he would ask others how Lucy was. Then, he knew enough to ask her himself. He knew in a glance that something was on her mind, but didn't know what.
Now he knows what's on her mind. He knows exactly what she's thinking. At first he doesn't believe it. But he knows it.
He looks away, trying to decide how he's going to handle it. Then, he looks back to Lucy to confirm. She looks away, thinking she's pushed too hard, accepting whatever Tim decides.
Watch. Her. Listening when Tim tells Dumbass Dad he's not going to jail. Her eyes shift back up to him, grateful. Not only did her message get through, but Tim listened and took action.
They've come so far in their communication. But, Tim's also come far as a man.
He's always been a good cop. But he missed the human element, sometimes. He was afraid of it. Showing compassion made things worse, in his eyes.
And I'm not saying that we should just give every criminal a clean slate for no reason. But Tim made the compassionate choice, and I can only hope the Dumbass Dad makes the most of it.
"You're going to Daddy and Me Traffic school."
Can this really exist? Because it sounds a helluva lot more fun than the traffic school I had to go to back in the day. Yes, Rachel has a lead foot.
I got my first ticket on Thanksgiving when I was at university. My parents showed up to court to support me, and when the Judge noted them reacting to the cop's account, he called them out. They waved. He smiled. I got a reduced ticket.
So, the lesson of the story is that you can go fast and be okay if your parents are good enough actors.
"How can I make it up to you?" "Be a better father to your son."
Strong words from a man who will someday be an incredible father in spite of the monster who raised him, leaving him without example of what that looks like.
But Tim knows what a good father should be. Despite never having one himself, he knows. And while he'll make his own mistakes, he won't pass on the trauma to his children. He'll create an entirely new legacy of love. With Lucy's help, of course.
"Daddy and Me Traffic school sounds fun."
Whose desk Is this? Is this Lucy's desk? Is he doing paperwork out here because he doesn't want to go back to his office?
I'm sure there's a logistical reason why this scene happened where it did (maybe Tim's office can't fit three people... it is the size of a closet). But, when I fist saw him sitting there, I was confused for a second.
"It was a really nice gesture, Tim."
One word. Three letters. She's giving us a masterclass, folks. Rewatch it. You'll see.
"I wanted to throw that guy in jail for putting his son in that position." "But?" "You're a good influence."
Hell, yeah, she is. Lucy has helped Tim see pieces of himself that needed refining, but also the best of who he is. Part of what I love about this relationship is that even in the seasons when he was her superior officer, she matched him as an instructor.
They taught one another the whole way—Tim teaching Lucy to be a little more wary of the world, and Lucy teaching Tim to be a little more open. They're at their best when they meet in the middle.
"You're gonna make a really great dad one of these days."
Anyone else melt into a puddle? Or just me? I only recently re-congealed so I could write this thing.
There's such adoration in Lucy's eyes, because she's not just saying this to a coworker. She's saying this to the love of her life. Picturing him with their children, she's falling in love with him a little bit more.
And while I'm not in a rush for Chenford babies... I love that they're talking about it. That they are expecting it. That it's a part of the life they are building together.
Both of them were previously in relationships with no real future. No fulfilling one, anyway. This is the relationship neither knew they needed, but that's the proverbial Cinderella's glass slipper—a perfect fit.
"I'm gonna have to. You keep losing our kids everywhere you go." "Come on. Stop it!"
What did I just listen to!? Y'all are really tryin' to take me out with this one! But, seriously, much like the "gave me the will to live" line from 5x10, Tim is saying this strictly for Lucy's reaction.
It reminds me so much of my own relationship I could scream. Matthew and I constantly do that to one another. Mostly me, though. It's mostly on me. His reactions are so perfect!
I'm also getting major Double Date energy with the delivery of "Come on. Stop It." when we were all blessed with the Tale of Gerald the Goat. It's all in the delivery, and I love it.
Almost as much as I love Tim's real smile with teeth at Lucy's reaction. That smile is for her, and it's amazing.
Didn't expect to wrap this one so early, but loveyby went to bed early after getting our Littlest finally to bed.
I really am loving the journey Tim and Lucy are on. Were they the comic relief this episode? Yes. It's an ensemble show, and sometimes that's their role.
Am I trying to rush a pregnancy? No way. I know I called out the possibility of a surprise pregnancy in this Meta, but that's in no way scripture, here. It's simply a possibility.
But I do think these two are in a lovely place. And I'm so grateful neither has been dramatically killed off, yet. It's kinda nice to have a living, breathing ship! I'll try not to get used to it... just in case.
Side Note: Bristow earned her keep, so maybe it's a good thing Lopez didn't "get that woman out of [her] house". Made me chuckle when I watched thinking about it!
Thank you so much for reading! We have a bit of a hiatus, but we'll make it through together! One breath at a time.

Almost. Again. -- Regina Mills x Emma Swan
Well hiyah Tumblr. I wrote a swanqueen fic. I don’t really know what this is. All I know is that I was watching episode 4x05 and there was a pretty harsh cut between when Emma and Regina defeated the ice monster and when the snow queen showed up. And I thought “they cut something out. We missed something” and then my brain gifted me this. So. Enjoy, I guess…? 🙈
Words: ~2,100
Warnings: None
Summary: Sometimes battles give you a rush of adrenaline. Sometimes battles exhaust you. And sometimes... Sometimes, battles are the perfect catalyst to mend relationships and create space for repressed feelings to bubble up and boil over. But not always.
Tumblr media
Read on Ao3
Snow monster? Melted. Emma’s hands burned a bit, but the giant thing dissolved into a puddle with a splash, so it was probably all taken care of.
Probably.
“I think we did it,” Emma panted, smiling despite herself.
Because it felt good. Falling back into their rhythm, melding their magic. Working together after however long they’d been apart. It couldn’t have been more than a few days. It felt like an eternity.
She looked over at Regina, finally catching her breath. And Regina…
Regina was looking at her with some kind of expression, emotion, that Emma couldn’t read for the life of her. But then a beat passed, and another. And Regina was still looking at her.
Emma cleared her throat. “Nice work.”
That seemed to jar Regina out of her stupor, because the next thing Emma knew, she was nodding.
“And you.” A pause. A swallow. “It seems that whole ‘learn as you go’ thing is working out for you. You didn’t need me after all.”
Emma fought the instant response, the guttural “I will always need you” that rattled against her ribs. Instead, she settled for a simple—
“I still have a lot to learn.”
Regina’s lip curved at the corner, and for a moment Emma thought that she had won. That she had earned herself a smile, after all this time. But then it morphed into something sad, and Regina pinned her focus on smoothing out the hem of her shirt. And Emma’s heart splintered again.
Always again.
The forest was silent for a moment, their ragged breathing the only thing filling the gaps. And really, it hadn’t been that much effort. Not with Regina helping. But it was the fear, the adrenaline. The feel of it all, and how much she had missed it.
Emma was chewing over what she could say, how she could tell her without Regina snapping her neck. She was so lost in weighing her options that she almost missed Regina breaking the silence. Beating her to it.
“I forgot how nice that felt,” she murmured, voice low and rasping.
Emma blamed it on the cold lingering in the air. Emma knew that she was lying to herself.
A measured breath. “Yeah.”
And then, to her surprise, Regina snorted.
“Always so articulate.”
Emma couldn’t help the smile that spread, because yes, working together had felt wonderful. It had stirred something inside of Emma that she forgot existed. Reminded her of a piece of herself that she forgot she possessed.
But this? Regina looking up at her through heavy lashes, a smirk pulling at the corner of her mouth, one hand wrapped protectively around her stomach and fingers fidgeting with her sleeve at her elbow— This was what Emma had missed. Had longed for. This felt better than any magic ever could.
Because Regina was open again. She was letting Emma in. She was—
She was stepping in closer. Closing the space between them.
Oh, shit.
“Regina…” Emma tried, but her voice wobbled. Cracked.
Another step.
Emma stepped back.
She expected Regina to stop. She expected that to be enough to break the moment (were they having a moment?), to put that wall back up between them and prompt Regina to shut herself off again.
But she didn’t. And she was still looking at Emma like that. And Emma couldn’t breathe. Dear god, she couldn’t fucking breathe.
Not only could she not breathe, apparently walking backwards had fallen completely out of her arsenal as well. Because the next thing Emma knew, she tripped over a large root and went careening backward.
And then there was bark against her back. And Regina’s hand on her waist. A nice, firm, solid tree trunk had broken her fall.
And Regina’s hand on her waist.
Emma blamed the way her lungs constricted on having the wind knocked out of her by the impact from the tree.
Definitely the tree.
“Still as graceful as ever, I see,” Regina said softly, eyes flitting across Emma’s face for the briefest of seconds before boring back into hers.
And god, anything would be better than this. Regina fully ogling her lips would be better than this. Because her eyes were dark in the deep forest, and glittering against the moonlight. And Emma was certain that Regina could see straight through her, let alone read her thoughts.
She was definitely not having appropriate thoughts.
And she blamed Regina for every single one of them, because her hand was still on Emma’s fucking waist.
“I— um.” It just fell out. Because Emma felt like she needed to say something, but there was no coherent thought to pull any kind of anything from. Not in Emma’s head. Not with Regina looking at her like that.
“We really need to work on your vocabulary.”
Remember when Emma thought she’d rather have Regina ogling her lips? When that would have been easier?
Yeah. She was wrong. She was so, entirely and completely wrong. Because in the next second Regina’s gaze dropped, and Emma’s heart went right along with it.
“I missed… what our magic feels like pooled together.” Regina’s voice was low. Careful. But Emma didn’t miss the hesitation. Didn’t miss the way that Regina’s gaze snapped back to her own.
Didn’t miss that tiny flicker of longing in her eyes.
They spent enough time dancing around each other for Emma to know it when she saw it. And she saw it. Plain as day.
And that’s why she gathered up enough courage to slide her hand beneath Regina’s jacket. Over the curve of her waist.
She let out a slow breath as the warmth seeped against her palm, eyes fluttering shut.
Her thumb brushed over the smooth fabric of Regina’s shirt, and in the stillness of the night, Emma caught the tiniest hum that racked up Regina’s throat. It was enough to prompt her to open her eyes. Because she needed to know if Regina was looking at her the way that Emma wanted her to, the way that she used to. She needed to know.
Emma startled, shoving herself back against the tree. Because Regina had gotten close, so close. Too close. And Emma could feel her soft breath washing over her cheeks. Could smell her perfume, still perfectly placed, even after the long trek here. And a battle.
And Regina was leaning in, leaning up on her toes. Closer, closer.
Emma would have closed her eyes if she hadn’t been so focused, so completely enamored with that little scar above Regina’s lip. The way it stretched as Regina licked her lips, smoothed them together.
And then Regina let out the smallest, shakiest breath. And then she pressed her forehead against Emma’s. Sighed.
Somehow, that felt more intimate that a kiss. Than a hug. Than anything Emma had been expecting. She didn’t know what she had been expecting. But she knew that this was infinitely better.
“You’re going to be the death of me, Miss Swan,” Regina breathed. And was she…? Yes. Regina was nuzzling her forehead against her.
But the words stuck, and Emma didn’t like them.
“Why do you keep doing that?” she asked softly, pushing at Regina gently. Pushing her back, despite everything that screamed for her to pull her closer. “Why do you keep calling me Miss Swan?”
Regina swallowed. Straightened. “So now I’m not allowed to say your name? It’s always infinite, pointless rules with you.”
“I wish you would.”
Shit.
Shit.
“Would what?”
“Say my name.” She needed to stop talking. There was an inch of space between them now and she could finally breathe, and she needed to stop talking before she suffocated again. “I wish you would call me Emma… like you used to.”
Welp. She never could trust her heart. And here it was, overriding her brain and screwing her over once again.
Or so she thought. Until Regina didn’t push her away and tell her off. Until Regina didn’t laugh in her face and call her a stupid child.
Until Regina stared her down, jaw working and nostrils flaring with deliberate breaths. Eyes searching.
Until Regina swallowed around whatever she was about to say. Squeezed her hands into fists. And breathed Emma’s name out on a ragged exhale.
It did something, that breath. Emma didn’t quite know what it was, but it set something hot pooling through her veins and something spiky constricting around her heart.
And if she thought she couldn’t breathe then, the air got kicked out of her again as Regina repeated it. Firmer this time.
“Emma…”
She stepped closer. Pressed in. Pinned Emma against that stupid fucking tree.
And Emma could have sworn she saw Regina’s hand shaking as she smoothed it over Emma’s shoulder. Slid it down to her waist. Squeezed.
“Emma,” she breathed, and it almost sounded like a plea.
Her breath was heavy now. Emma could see her chest heaving under her shirt. Could feel the tiny, fast puffs of it against her lips. But most of all—
Most of all, Emma could feel that energy coming off of her. Crackling and sizzling and hot. Pounding through the thick of the air and pulling Emma in, in, in. Making every atom inside of her vibrate with a want that she couldn’t describe. Didn’t understand. All she understood was Regina. All she could comprehend was Regina. Their breathing syncing, their heartbeats thudding together.
And she didn’t know why it got like this, why the need rang out this loud. Why Emma’s body responded to Regina’s like this. She knew it wasn’t a spell. It wasn’t a curse. She didn’t know if it was their magic, having its own conversation and yanking them together, or if it was just Regina herself, Emma’s body ready and waiting to worship her like the goddess she was.
It wouldn’t take much now, just the smallest tilt of her chin. The tiniest shift. And Emma could do that. She could absolutely do that. But so could Regina. And she wasn’t. And Emma didn’t know if she was debating, what she was waiting for, when she had Emma literally pinned and at her mercy—
Regina’s hand tightened, nails digging in.
“Someone’s here.”
And then the moment broke, the tension shattering around Emma like her own personal wall of ice as Regina pushed away.
She barely had time to think about how fucking ironic that was, how cold she felt in this stupid forest without Regina pressing into her. And then Regina said her name again.
This time, it sounded like a warning. This time, it was too wary and too firm, and Emma decidedly didn’t like it coming out of Regina’s mouth when it sounded like that. When Regina had that look in her eye.
“We should leave,” Regina tried, reaching for Emma’s arm. Her hand? God, Emma couldn’t think. All she could register was Regina pulling her off of the tree, dragging her back the way they had come. And god, how could Regina be so put together and observant after—
“What a welcome visit, ladies.”
The wave of cold hit Emma in the stomach, pulsing off of the snow queen and hanging rigid in the air. Keeping her pinned. Slowing her down. Regina’s hand fell from hers.
Against everything, it burned.
It all happened so fast after that.
One second, it was pleasantries. Niceties. Everything was civil and Emma thought that maybe they could all actually have a proper conversation with her head screwed on straight. And then Regina’s mirror, in the wrong hands. And then those hands, lifting Regina off the ground and suffocating her. Suffocating Emma.
Ice flying, cold air filling her lungs. A whirl of snow, and quiet descending once more on the forest. Regina huffing out a long breath. Emma reaching for her, questioning. Regina glaring back, shaking her head. And then the anger, the betrayal. That acute hurt from before that had been thrown on the back burner, evaporated to oblivion by the feel of Regina’s hand on Emma’s waist.
It all came crashing back down at that look on Regina’s face, fully formed. A brick in her stomach.
Like she said, it all happened so fast. Emma asked a simple question with too much hurt laced into it. And Regina bit back. Too hard.
Emma blinked, and the next thing she knew, Regina was gone in a swirl of smoke, her words ringing low and dangerous in the air.
“I don’t want to.”
And so, Emma did the only thing she could do. The only thing she knew how to do. She took a deep breath, pretended that Regina’s words didn’t shatter her heart. Again. And then she went about the rest of her day, just like usual.

words: 3.4k
“What were you and Tom talking about last night?”
Shiv’s hovering over her suitcase in her slate and granite pseudo-cabin, Karolina sitting on the couch in the corner of the room. It’s late now, the Norwegian forest outside slowly dimming as the night draws near. They’re flying back to the States in the morning, and they’ll accept the deal from Matsson and get rid of the cruise lines and the fascists and Shiv is going to be the fucking American CEO and they can finally just put Dad to rest and all this other bullshit with him. It’s simple.
At least, it should be. Because what fucking business does Karolina have hanging around Tom all weekend anyway?
“Me and Tom?” Karolina asks. She doesn’t look up from the laptop in front of her, her furious typing barely faltering as she speaks.
“At the party,” Shiv says. “You were standing next to each other for an awfully long time.”
The typing finally slows, and Shiv looks at her, unreadable per usual.
“Oh,” Karolina says. “Nothing much. Just, making fun of Swedish dance music. And—I mean then, Tom tried to lecture me on why Swedish House Mafia is actually one of the greater electronic music artists of this generation, which, sure I guess, but I don’t think he even understood which generation he was talking about—”
“Karolina, this is serious.”
“I’m being serious, Shiv,” Karolina says, eyes focused back on the laptop. “I don’t ever want to hear about Swedish House Mafia again.”
The typing picks up and Shiv turns back to her suitcase, rearranging the contents for the fifth time. It shouldn’t make her so upset, but it does. Much like a crossed line or a broken boundary, it’s out of her control. Her pull on Tom is getting looser every day, she can feel as much, and her pull with her bothers is getting looser every day, and Matsson sends fucking blood bricks to his ex-girlfriend, so really, her entire livelihood is hanging in the balance by a group of men all held together with a bunch of loose threads and screws, and she’s fucking asking Karolina the simplest question in the world, and the only answer she can give Shiv is Swedish House Mafia.
Shiv turns around.
“So, if I called Tom right now and asked him what you talked about last night, he’d just say Swedish dance music?”
Karolina looks at her then, calculating eyes not leaving Shiv as she closes her laptop. She’s weighing the pros and cons, thinking through the risks and consequences of telling Shiv the truth, and Shiv’s had it. If she has to force Karolina’s hand, then so be it.
“Forget it,” Shiv says. “I’m calling.”
“Shiv—” Karolina says, standing up. “Hold on.”
“Remember something else?” She waits for Karolina to speak, feigning patience they both know she doesn’t have, and it doesn’t take Karolina long to speak up.
“We got into an argument,” Karolina admits.
“About?”
Karolina crosses her arms and looks away.
“You,” she mumbles.
Perfect. That’s perfect.
“Anything specific, or just which pair of pants you think my ass looks better in?” Shiv asks, feeling satisfied as Karolina rolls her eyes. Shiv’s getting that answer.
“He asked why we’ve been spending so much time together,” Karolina says, which expeditiously turns Shiv’s minor jealousy into major fury, because this was not on her agenda for the trip.
“And what the fuck did you tell him?”
“Nothing,” Karolina says. “I—I just—”
“You just what?”
“I just—fuck—I threatened him,” Karolina says. “Okay? I threatened him.”
“Oh, you threatened him,” Shiv says, as if it’s the simplest thing in the world. “Would you like to share what you threatened him with, Karolina?”
“No,” Karolina says. “I don’t.”
Karolina has her world-renowned poker face on, and Shiv can only imagine what it is that Karolina used against him. She probably has a war supply of paper trails against every person in the company, let alone Tom. And it’s not that Shiv wants to protect him, but Karolina’s a different force when it comes to Shiv, and she isn’t sure that Tom would ever stand a fighting chance against Karolina.
“You know, I don’t need you fighting battles for me,” Shiv says. “I’m perfectly capable of fighting them on my own.”
“Yeah, that’s why he’s still your husband and not your ex-husband,” Karolina says.
So, Karolina’s mad. Fine. Shiv can be mad too.
“I’ll divorce him when I want to divorce him,” Shiv says.
“Because that’s what you said the last time, right?”
It’s fair. Shiv came crawling back, divorce papers dangling like a bird in her teeth and Karolina believed her. Wanted her. Shiv believed it too, she did, and then Tom took it back. He gave her another chance, and she’d made a commitment, right?
“I didn’t say anything,” Shiv says. “I said we were separating, that’s not a fucking divorce.”
“Seriously?” Karolina says. “That’s how we’re doing this? Fucking semantics?”
“If you have a problem with my relationship with Tom, then fucking say it to me,” Shiv says. “I don’t need you running around and screwing shit up.”
“I’m screwing shit up?” Karolina asks. “He’s fucking you, Shiv. He’s fucking you right to the finish line, like he always has been, but I’m the one who’s screwing shit up.”
“Yeah, Karolina,” Shiv says, crossing her arms. “You are.”
Karolina laughs hollowly and she picks up her laptop as if she’s ready to make her exit.
“Sorry for trying to defend you, Shiv,” she says, walking away from the couch. “I won’t fucking do it again.”
“It’s not your place,” Shiv says, and Karolina freezes, expression now angered.
“Please, Shiv, explain to me what my place is.”
Shiv feeds into the anger as well, and somewhere in the back of her mind she begs herself to stop, to just let it go and sleep it off and remember that Karolina cares about her, that Karolina wants what’s best for her, that finally having someone irrevocably in her corner doesn’t mean that she has to immediately try and push them out, but Shiv’s never been adept at accepting care. Not without mutually assured destruction.
“To just shut the fuck up and let me handle my shit, Karolina,” Shiv says.
“One foot out Tom’s door and one foot in mine,” Karolina says. “You’re really handling it, huh?”
“This is ridiculous,” Shiv mutters. “Don’t you—fucking have a job to be begging for right now?”
“If it’s working under you?” Karolina asks, stepping forward. “Fuck no.”
Shiv feels the words like the wind biting at her ankles; the tantalizing chill still finding its way to sink into her skin despite it being something she’d come dressed prepared for. The silence is thick, Karolina’s heavy breath waiting for Shiv to bite back.
“Did you forget my dad just died, or are you still getting off on all the crisis management?”
“That’s not funny, Shiv.”
“No?” Shiv asks. “So, just to be clear—you did, or you didn’t start writing the press release on his death before they’d even gotten the defibrillators out? I mean, fuck—you’ve probably had it written for months, haven’t you? What, since the stroke? Just biding your time until you could swoop in and play PR doctor?”
“What the hell is your problem?” Karolina asks, her hands now gripping the laptop tightly. “I’m sorry your father owned a Fortune 500, Shiv. I’ll make sure to let him know we need time to stabilize the stock market first the next fucking time he—”
Karolina cuts herself off and Shiv swoops forward with a taunting gaze.
“What, croaks?” Shiv asks. “You’d love to do it all again, huh? You fucking love it. Exploiting death, it’s what you’re good at, right?”
“Fuck you,” Karolina says, her eyes filling with tears. Shiv can’t stop it when the sudden display of emotion sets her off.
“Jesus, tears?” she scoffs. “We should get a mirror in here for how fucking stupid you look.”
She doesn’t realize what she’s said until after it’s come out, the words leaving a horrible after-taste in her mouth. Karolina scoffs so quietly Shiv is almost certain she’d made it up, not hearing much between the pounding of her heart filling her ears.
“What?” Karolina asks, her small voice laced with disappointment and disbelief, and if Shiv thought the hole in her heart couldn’t get any bigger, well, she was wrong.
Shiv opens her mouth to speak, but there’s nothing for her to say.
Karolina takes a tentative step forward, arms still crossed and eyes still wet, and she speaks, clearly shaken.
“I’m sorry that I interfered with Tom, and I’m sorry that I’m in a position where I have to treat your father’s death like it’s just business, truly, Siobhan, I am, but—” Karolina pauses, her words hanging, and Shiv’s almost grateful when she doesn’t complete the thought. She heads for the door, opening it slightly before stopping briefly, “I’m going to go look stupid in my own fucking room.”
Shiv sits long past the sun-setting and the last-night festivities going quiet and the other cabin’s lights going off one by one, replaying the argument in her head. She pokes and prods at it, wondering at which point it went sour, whether it had been the whole time. Karolina started it. She brought up the divorce and she baited Shiv. It was her.
Yet somehow, Shiv still feels like she’s done something irreparable.
When she can’t take it anymore, she braves the woods with just her phone flashlight and the skin of her teeth, and she goes to Karolina’s room. If Shiv were counting, she’d note that it only took Karolina twenty seconds to open the door, and she’s definitely been way less mad at Shiv and taken way longer.
“Hey,” Shiv says.
“Hey,” Karolina repeats, with no hint of her current mental state.
They stare silently for a second until Shiv hears a bristling in trees, and she remembers she’s outside in the wilderness.
“Uh, you wanna let me in before Norwegian Jason fucking hops out of the bushes?”
Karolina rolls her eyes but opens the door wider, allowing Shiv entry. Shiv immediately shivers, in disbelief at how cold it is in her suite.
“You know we’re not in charge of expensing utilities, right?” Shiv says. “You can turn the heat up without getting fired.”
“You mean I won’t have to beg for my job?” Karolina asks.
Shiv fucked up. She knows she did. She can see it in the tensing of Karolina’s shoulders, hear it in the curtness of her words. It’s not unfamiliar territory though, and that’s the only thing keeping her going. She’s done this before. She can grovel.
“You’re not going to lose your job, Karolina.”
“Good, good,” Karolina says. “Did Matsson tell you he has a death he needs you to exploit? I’ve been told I’m good at that.”
Shiv looks down in embarrassment.
“That was…” she trails off, biting her tongue. What else can she say? It always comes to this. Things are good until they’re not. Shiv is happy until she’s not. She treats people right until she doesn’t.
“Low, Shiv,” Karolina says. “Even for you.”
“Yeah,” Shiv says. “Digging into old wounds—whatever. Not cool, I know.”
The silence around them is suffocating. Shiv wishes there were some sort of card she could present, some pharmacy junk-drawer filler that says, “Sorry for being a cunt. Will do it again!” and maybe another one that says, “My dad just died and all I got you was this card!” and then she wouldn’t have to explain it, she’d just be able to give Karolina something concrete, something that explains she doesn’t know how to be a person right now and please don’t hold that against her.
But Karolina gives her the chance to try.
“Can you—can you just tell me what happened?” Karolina asks.
“What happened is my dad just died and Matsson is fucking insane, and you, you just—” Shiv has to turn away. She doesn’t want to rile herself up again, doesn’t want to resort to lashing out.
“What, Shiv?” Karolina asks. “I dislike how Tom treats you? I want you to be happy?”
“You’re meddling, Karolina,” Shiv says, turning back around.
“Shiv, you included me,” Karolina says. “You approached me, and you said you were getting a divorce and you told me it could all work out. I’m sorry if I crossed a line, but some of those lines belong to me now.”
“Tom is not—”
“Including Tom,” she says. “The second you invited me back into your life, that included Tom.”
Shiv can’t argue with that. She made Karolina a liability, she told Karolina that Tom wouldn’t be around for much longer, and she told Karolina that she wanted her.
“Okay,” Shiv says. “It’s just—this deal and the fucking funeral, it’s—it’s a lot, Karolina, alright? And a fucking, property war over me is not helping. It’s not.”
Karolina’s facade cracks just a little, her eyes softening and frown deepening.
‘You’re right, Shiv, I’m sorry,” she says. “But Tom’s just—he’s a fucking asshole, and I can’t just stand there and watch him gloat while the rest of our jobs are on the chopping block, I can’t.”
“You’re not going to be on the kill list,” Shiv says. She made sure of that.
“You don’t know that, Shiv—”
“I said, you’re not going to be on the fucking list,” Shiv repeats, voice hoarse yet strong all the same.
Karolina freezes at the interruption. She huffs, something like a challenge in her eyes and Shiv narrows hers in response.
“You’re not on the list,” Shiv repeats again, softer. “So, whatever superiority Tom thinks he has over you right now, he doesn’t. Including me.”
Karolina stares at Shiv, a host of emotions swimming in her eyes, but the one that sticks is a quiet despondence that makes Shiv regret ever having scolded Karolina at all.
“I don’t want to talk about this anymore,” Karolina says, turning away.
She sits down on the bed, avoiding Shiv’s gaze, the tell-tale sign of her tears returning when she brings a taught sleeve to the corner of her eye. A pang of guilt rolls through Shiv’s gut at the words she said earlier. It’s a disgusting little feat, learning how to weaponize the very things that were once used against you. Matsson had said it himself not even twenty-four hours earlier.
Like your dad.
Shiv sits down next to Karolina, not waiting for an invitation, and she mulls in the silence, unsure of what she could say to fix this. If what she could say would even be enough. That she doesn’t want everything she touches to be shrouded in venomous generational warfare. That this isn’t fun for her.
Shiv stares out the window ahead of them, barely able to make out the trees in the darkness. If Shiv Roy falls in a forest, does she make a sound? Or does she let herself go quietly, without a fight? It’s been so long since her voice actually mattered, she’s forgotten that it still affects people. People she cares about.
“If I apologize, will it even mean anything?” she asks.
“It always means something,” Karolina says. “Every time.”
Every time should feel like a dig, but it doesn’t. It’s comforting in some fucked up way, that admits the struggle and the chaos and cruelty, Karolina hears her. That she listens, and fights for Shiv’s honor even when Shiv doesn’t want her to. That she cares, too.
“Everything is so fucked right now,” Shiv says. “I can’t be the person you need me to be.”
Karolina’s eyes turn sad suddenly.
“I don’t need you to be anything,” Karolina says. “I’m not trying to hold you to some impossible standard, Shiv, I—I just want you to be honest with me every once in a while.”
“Honesty,” Shiv laughs, though it quickly settles, and she can’t stop her eyes from pooling with tears and her throat from constricting tightly. Karolina squeezes Shiv’s hand, always her lifeline when nobody else seems to be there. Shiv looks away, voice taught. “I can’t lose Tom right now. Not both of them.”
Karolina sighs, the sound smooth yet resolved. It hurts, thinking Shiv’s caused endless disappointment inside this woman, but she reminds herself that there has to be something good between them, for disappointment to exist at all.
“Okay,” Karolina says.
“If this changes things—”
“Shiv,” Karolina interrupts. “It’s not me or him, okay? You’re not going to chase me off that easily.”
“What if me and Tom—you know, what if we never end?”
“I don’t know,” Karolina says. “But for right now, I know that I still want you, that hasn’t changed.”
Shiv nods, running out of worries to throw out in the air. It’s fucking pathetic, but everything is pathetic right now. She’s almost content to wallow, just this once, until Karolina steers the conversation in a direction Shiv was hoping they could just both forget about, a skeleton of a conversation she hoped they’d shove under the bed and never speak about again.
“Shiv—what you said—about getting a mirror—”
It was a nasty thing to say at all, but especially to Karolina. Karolina, who trusts Shiv. Who’s shown Shiv vulnerability, and who’s trusted Shiv with that vulnerability. She’s disgusted with herself for having abused that privilege.
“It was cruel and fucked up,” Shiv says. “You’re allowed to cry, of course you are.”
“I know I’m allowed to cry, Shiv,” Karolina says. “Do you know that you’re allowed to cry?”
Shiv’s tears pool at the question, and even still, she can feel herself holding back. It’s a reaction she can’t control, holding it all back. Some days it’s like the only emotion she has is the absence of it; like the only thing she can do is swallow herself whole, scale down her tears and turn them into something more useful like anger or spite. She learned early on that if they see her cry, they’ll know. They’ll know just how fucking stupid she is.
She clears her throat, and Karolina shifts closer to her, wrapping an arm around Shiv’s waist.
“When we were younger, and we were upset, Dad—he would take us in front of this mirror and he would make us look at ourselves as we cried,” Shiv says. “He, uh, called it the Silly Mirror.”
Karolina says nothing, but Shiv doesn’t know what she would expect her to say, anyway. The context only adds an extra heaviness to the statement, and it’s a hard pill to swallow that she’d said it at all. It’s one thing to use her dad’s words against herself, her brothers even, but to use them against Karolina? It’s a vitriol Shiv had hoped wasn’t in her. Karolina called her rotten once, and Shiv considers that it could still be true. She’s lived in this body for too long now, of course, it would’ve spoiled somewhere along the way. It’s possible she’d been rotten from conception, that she spent too long in her mom’s belly and ruined her chances before she even knew what self-sabotage was. The evidence is there; the last born before Caroline ran. It was Shiv. Rotten Shiv.
Two built a company. Three a crowd.
“Shiv—” Karolina starts, but Shiv doesn’t want to hear it. Not yet.
“I thought it was my mom,” Shiv continues. “The mirror—I thought it was her. And when Dad died—I mean, when Ken told me, I thought it was her, too. I knew it wasn’t, but I just—I hoped it was, you know?”
Karolina nods, her hand now rubbing sympathetically across Shiv’s back.
“He has to be what I remember, because if I’m wrong about him, then who else am I wrong about?”
If she cries for a monster, is she a monster too?
“You’re not him,” Karolina says. “A result, maybe, or—or a product, but you’re not him.”
A product sounds much too clinical a word for what’s supposed to be daughter, but it’s a nice thought, that it’s nurture over nature and she’s not inherently evil for acting the only way she knows how.
“I don’t deserve you,” Shiv says.
Karolina just sighs and rests her head on Shiv’s shoulders, and it feels something like a truce. Shiv wraps her own arm around Karolina’s waist, and knows this connection is something she often takes for granted. Karolina links their free hands together in response.
“I wish you could see that you do.”

Let’s talk about that last Nace scene (4x05)…
Beginning as two people wanting different things, two humans moving in different directions…
 I can’t go back…
I can’t go forward…
Because of belief, because of a notion that the path they see, the path they are on, is the right one, and how could the other not envision how this could work, how if they just pick this as the correct resolution, they could walk together…
It’s emphasized as the scene continues, that the reasoning for diverging was never about questioning the love they carry for one another.
 (I never doubted that…)
The gravity of that love has always rested heavily in both their hearts, but in this era of the curse, it’s how they define that love that has gotten rewritten. What was so succinct – three words that never needed further explanation or exposition, suddenly now are followed by desperate digression, by straggling reasoning, by endless deviations…
I love you detours toward complexity.
I love you is not so simple as it once was.
Ace explains that his love is now defined as sacrificial – that his I love you is found in selfishness, the outskirts of that definition his insecurities, but at the center his purpose that he’s come to find through being alongside her.
And he can’t lose that. He can’t lose her.
Nancy’s love is more defined as growth – as progress and advancement as a person and how someone can help you move beyond yourself and into a more truthful version of yourself.
And she can’t lose that. She can’t lose him.
And as the scene ends, it’s two people accepting each other’s definition – accepting each other’s paths, two humans moving in different directions and waving affectionately, longingly as they pass each other in the roundabout…
One day, a long time from now, I hope that we both can find another great love.
After you, I would accept nothing less.
They wave to each other, calmly, heartbreakingly so, finding peace in a goodbye neither of them wants to give, but knowing, however devastated, they have to let go…
(for now)

20 Questions for Fic Writers
thanks for tagging me @im-overstimulated-and-im-sad
I love wasting time with these things when I'm supposed to be writing 😉
How many works do you have on AO3? In total 262, for tarlos 24 (and counting)
What's your total AO3 word count? 642,739 (holy shit)
What fandoms do your write for? at the moment just 911 lone star/tarlos, but I'm kind of looking into RWRB/firstprince, and depending on a certain mister R. Hawley, I might get pulled back into emmerdale/robron
What are your top five fics by kudos? I'll stick to tarlos for this or else it'll just be 5 robron fics Austin TX first responders week - TK and Carlos have to give a talk about their jobs at a school for Austin's first responders week. Filling in the blanks - a post episode/missing moment of Owen finding out what happened to Carlos in 4x04 See you later - Marjan going to say goodbye to a still recovering Carlos before she leaves in 4x05 - kind of a missing moment It started with a concussion - a meet ugly with Carlos literally running into TK while chasing a suspect Love and Lou - The Lou fic! Vet!Carlos AU meet cute with a little help from Lou I and II
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Not as often as I should. I never know what to say other than "Thank you" and i just end up reading the comments 50 times over (and i save the emails from AO3) and I'm like I LOVE YOU PERSON LEAVING A COMMENT ON MY SILLY LITTLE STORY YOU MADE MY DAY - but only in my head because i don't want to seem too weird. Idk - I overthink things.
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I don't do angsty endings. Though PS I love you is a little bittersweet I guess. TK getting a letter from Gwyn on his wedding day.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? All of them! I need a happy ending - always. But I suppose it was 'earned' the most in California where they both Go Through It before they get their happy ending.
Do you get hate on fics? I haven't on tarlos fics but I did get a hater on one of my anti chas robron fics once. I just deleted the comment.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Not really. I've tried... but it's just not for me.
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? Not really. Unless you count the tiny blink and you miss it RWRB reference in Swing swing.
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not as far as I know.
Have you ever had a fic translated? Nope but I've translated fics from German to English for a friend yeeeeeaaaars ago - for Luke/Noah from As The World Turns
Have you ever co-written a fic before? I have, several. For Luke/Noah from ATWT way back in the day. it was an Experience™
What's your all time favourite ship? I can't pick just one!
What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Undercover Carlos - I really want to finish it but I'm so bad at multi chapter fics. I'm bad at planning and I lose motivation and everyone else loses interest. I'm going to try get back to it when I'm done with my flufftober fics (so somewhere next summer or so 🙃)
What are your writing strengths? Dialogue for sure. and cutesy oneshots.
What are your writing weaknesses? Describing stuff. Translating the "picture" I have in my head to words on 'paper' is The Worst. Also planning and plotting a story - I tend to make stuff up as I go (which is why I suck at long multichapter fics)
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Don't do it unless you speak the language or know someone who does who can check it for you. Google translate is NOT your friend. A few words here and there (like the Spanish terms of endearment in tarlos fics) is fine, you can't really go wrong with that, but for more than that you need someone who actually speaks the language.
First fandom you wrote for? Luke and Noah - As The World Turns
Favourite fic you've written? For Tarlos I had a lot of fun with my Lou fic that I mentioned earlier and The perfect costume has done some interesting things to my insta algorithm, and The power of a muddy dog was fun because I like soft!TK with Buttercup. But all of my fics have *something* that makes them *special* to me.
If you've read all this... I'm impressed lol
