I actually feel like the shakespeare plays I read for school were some of the worst ones asdf- I keep wanting to rectify this but for some reason my impulse is to go for Richard III and I’m absolutely not doing that ✌🏻

consider: a version of othello set in agna qel'a
lmfaoo are you saying this bc agna qel’a has venetian canals?? you know that at least 80% of that play is set in cyprus, right??? also like. even if you read arnook as brabantio and yue as desdemona, the colonial dynamics between othello and desdemona vs sokka and yue are very different. like, just because othello and sokka both struggle with their masculinity as informed by their roles as colonized subjects whose identities are defined by war does not mean that they are in any way similar in how they respond to those conflicts. i get that the whole colonial forbidden love element is central to both texts, but in very different ways, i don’t really see it mapping. like, desdemona’s displays of agency (in eloping and defying her father) directly counter yue’s displays of agency (in deliberately sacrificing herself for her people). not only does she not betray her father to be with sokka, she does not die “a guiltless death,” (ie, passive and futile) either. she dies a very deliberate, heroic death. the image of hahn as roderigo is very funny though, i’ll give you that. and also “put out the light then put out the light” is really beautiful imagery wrt the moon and yue’s death. but while i can definitely trace parallels (i mean im basically a professional reader of positioning othello in conversation with basically any text) i don’t really think a 1:1 mapping coheres in any significant way. sorry

on the other hand ive been reading othello today and i know it's shocking ive read 23 shakespeare plays and it took me this long to finally get to othello. in my defense the riverside shakespeare (1973) is a hell of a drug. i have always been reading the plays in no particular order other than what my whims directed me to. i read the winter's tale last year because my professor mentioned it offhandedly. one of the first comedies i read was all's well that ends well not because i knew anything about it, or even heard anyone say it was good, but because i liked the title and i knew there was a character with my name in it. i read all over the place but yeah by far the most significant play i still hadn't read as of a week ago was othello, and now i'm more than halfway through it and. yeah.
i haven't read a pure shakespeare tragedy in three and a half years. ive mostly been reading the histories this year in particular. i think i might generally neglect the tragedies because i find the comedies and romances to be more whimsical and fun, and the histories to be more devilish and bloodthirsty and action-packed, however that is to my regret because my whims have not leaned more towards a tragedy in all that time. i still watch them on occasion but that's different.
i haven't felt this deeply connected to the characters in his plays in such a long time, my god. i absolutely love othello and my heart is aching. desdemona can do no wrong. cassio is poor and unfortunate. i want to rip iago's eyes out. oh my god wow.

OTHELLO NULARA, SON OF BHAAL
In elven, the prefix 'nu-' means hope, and suffix 'lara' means death or end. Thus, Nulara, hope-killer.
Born and raised to a rich family in Baldur's Gate, Othello belonged to Bhaal. From childhood when his caretaker taught him druidic magic, he used it to his advantage. He poisoned his caretaker, parents, and sister with poisonous fungi and flora. The Temple of Bhaal was more than happy to help raise him to be Bhaal's chosen. He only wanted to devote himself to Bhaal. He would poison parties with fungal mixes and assasinate elites with deadly potions. A knife was difficult to hide. But plants... plants were simple. Plants left no blood behind.

you know, i dont know a single other person i could tell about this dmitri thing except my girlfriend and i basically just reeled her to opera after a lot of "no no its ok its not that serious its just pretty soap opera plotlines its nice its silly dont take it that seriously" for awhile ughguhtorroijg honestly its a shame im sorry if it seems pretentious i assure you its really not something im proud of liking i just think its silly and fun. like games youd play as a kid but if theres x100 the drama and a soundtrack made just for it. affairs and murders....i wish it was less held up as fancy and unreachable literally anyone could like it you dont need a degree or anything
