Georgia Tech: 2021 Atlantic Coast Men's Basketball Champions

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- — Jose Alvarado couldn't contain his emotions as the horn sounded, collapsing in disbelief as his Georgia Tech teammates mobbed each other near midcourt.

He quickly ran to the celebration that included coach Josh Pastner — still sporting that can't-miss-it clear face shield.

"Coach, you're a champion, man!" Alvarado yelled as he joined him for a postgame TV interview amid fallen-from-the-rafters balloons and confetti.

The Yellow Jackets have their first Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament title in nearly three decades after beating No. 15 Florida State 80-75 in Saturday night's championship game. Just as importantly, they've secured an automatic NCAA Tournament berth to end an 11-year drought.

"A lot of emotions: joy, happiness, everything," said Michael Devoe, the tournament MVP. "I mean, this goes down in history for us."

Devoe scored 20 points for the fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets (17-8), who shot 52% after halftime and repeatedly capitalized on mistakes by the Seminoles to win their first ACC Tournament crown since 1993 and fourth overall.

ACC player of the year Moses Wright and Jordan Usher each had 11 of their 15 points after halftime for Georgia Tech, which got off to an 0-2 start this season with home losses to Georgia State and Mercer. The Yellow Jackets stood 9-8 after a loss at Clemson on a last-second shot Feb. 12 to find themselves facing bubble uncertainty.

But they haven't lost since. And there's no doubt about the NCAA tourney now after a remarkable climb, not after a strong finish against the second-seeded Seminoles (16-6).

"Our guys have just scrapped, fought, kicked, clawed — whatever they had to do to find a way to get wins this year," Pastner said. "And I'm just so darn proud of these young men."

Scottie Barnes had 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting for Florida State, which shot 56% but committed 25 turnovers that led to 31 points for the Yellow Jackets.

They came in all kinds of ways, from the Seminoles bobbling catches and having passes deflected to just throwing balls straight out of bounds. The 25 turnovers fell one shy of tying a tournament title-game record since the league began tracking the number in 1961, while Georgia Tech's 15 steals — five by Alvarado — was a title-game record since the league began charting it in 1976.

"We did turn the ball over a couple of times ourselves, what we call self-inflicted turnovers," FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said. "But for the most part, I think that they forced us into turnovers. ... I want to give them credit because they did an unbelievable job of just stripping us from the ball, and their defense created a mindset with us where we were unsure as to what we were supposed to do."

The Yellow Jackets avoided such trouble with just seven turnovers. But they were particularly steady down the stretch, making six of eight shots over the final eight minutes as well as 11 of 12 free throws in the final 90 seconds.

That included Alvarado knocking down a pair with nine seconds left after shaking off a hard fall, which had come right after Barnes' 3 pulled the Seminoles to 76-73.

The only thing that didn't go according to plan was the Yellow Jackets' celebration. Alvarado stripped RayQuan Evans and fed Devoe for a layup with 0.6 seconds left, but the Georgia Tech players began spilling onto the court early to celebrate. That led to a technical foul and two free throws for FSU, though the outcome was decided and the Georgia Tech party had begun.

Pastner kept that face shield in place, too, even as he stood atop a ladder — socially distanced from his team below — and cut down the final strands of net.

It was an unusual final pairing in a tournament altered by the coronavirus pandemic. No. 16 Virginia and Duke withdrew after positive COVID-19 tests within their programs. The title matchup marked the second finale without a North Carolina-based team, the other being Georgia Tech's win against Virginia in 1990.

Now the Yellow Jackets finally have another.

BIG PICTURE

Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets had won seven straight, including Thursday against Miami in the quarterfinals. Then their semifinal matchup with the Cavaliers was canceled to give them an unexpected off day before the final. They didn't shoot well from outside (5 for 23 on 3-pointers) but still won in their first title-game appearance since 2010.

Florida State: The Seminoles had a delayed tournament debut when their scheduled quarterfinal against the Blue Devils was called off, but they pushed past North Carolina in Friday's semifinals by locking down defensively in the final four minutes to close it out. They found themselves in another tough finish despite all the turnovers, though this time they couldn't keep the Yellow Jackets from getting to the line or scoring timely baskets.

HOW TO STREAM DNA TO GET BTS IN THE HOT100

BTS has said countless times that their current goal is to get into the HOT100 and that they have a reward for us if we’re successful.

So how does the HOT100 work and how can we achieve a spot on it to make BTS proud? The HOT100 relies 35-45% on sales, 30-40% on airplay (radio etc.), and 20-30% on streaming.

The most crucial and easiest way to do so is to stream in Spotify. If you do not have a Spotify account, you can create one and start a Free 7 Day Trial. If you already have an account, you can start a 30 Day Trial (like me) and then cancel before the 30 days are up. If you don’t want to do either of those, then you can play songs on the Spotify web browser on desktop and you will have basically the same privileges as a premium account. Now, to make it into the HOT100, we need to break through the TOP25 on the UNITED STATES Spotify chart. We are currently ranked 50th on the chart for Global Top 50, but we are not ranked on the U.S. charts.

The Global Top 50 WILL NOT count towards the HOT100 since the HOT100 is based out of the United States and Puerto Rico. NOTICE: If you are not located in the United States, you MUST CHANGE YOUR VPN TO THE UNITED STATES for the streams to count. We currently have over 3,000,000 million streams, but only roughly 300,000 are being counted because people didn’t change their vpn address. If you are unsure as to how to do this, there is a tutorial here.

Because we are unsure of how many views are from coming from Apple Music, Itunes, and Sales, BTS needs around 15,000,000-20,000,000 streams in the next TWO DAYS to (safely) make it into the United States chart. Streaming is VERY CRUCIAL because 150 streams = 1 song sale, 10 song sales = 1 album, so 1,500 streams = 1 album sale. Streaming will help us greatly, since we are struggling to have DNA played on radio stations.

How to Stream: We are VERY short on time, so the fastest way to rake up views is to make a large playlist of only DNA and have it on repeat, or to just have the song DNA on repeat. Please note, that in order for a stream to fully count, you must listen to the song with at least 50% volume and for at least 30 seconds. If you’re on a desktop and are multi-tasking, MUTE YOUR DESKTOP AND NOT SPOTIFY. If you’re on the mobile app and don’t want to hear DNA on repeat, you can have the Spotify running in the background, just plug headphones in and have the volume up! Remember, you only need to listen to DNA for 30 seconds for it to count as 1 stream. So skip the track after 30+ seconds to increase streams! Also, before you go to bed, put DNA on loop on Spotify and plug in your charger and headphones. 7 hours = 112 streams, 8 hours = 128 streams, 9 hours = 144 streams, 10 hours = 160 streams.

Other Places to Stream DNA:

Shazam: This is also a crucial app to stream on! Radio stations view this app to figure out which songs are popular right now, so if DNA gets a lot of streams on Shazam, then it could increase the possibility of having it played on the radio.

Itunes: We are doing relatively well on Itunes, but we could still be doing better. DNA is ranked #10 on top songs and Love Yourself is currently ranked #1!

Apple Music: We are doing AWFUL on Apple Music. DNA is currently ranked #121 on the list of top songs. Please help stream on Apple Music to increase our chart number!

You can also stream the official music video on Youtube, stream DNA on Google Play, and Amazon Music Unlimited.

CASE STUDY How Decathlon uses digital to meet customers’ needs – during lockdown and beyond

Decathlon was well-prepared for this year’s Covid-19 lockdowns, thanks to its existing multichannel expertise. The French retailer, ranked Elite in this year’s RXEU Top1000 research, had already invested in digital and as a result was able to serve customers as they started to do much more of their shopping online during the coronavirus pandemic. During lockdown, the UK arm of the business saw sudden high demand for home delivery, and it was able to respond while at the same time offering a new range of services to customers who were now buying from home rather than in stores that were closed in many markets during lockdown.

Decathlon, a leader in the global sports equipment and clothing market, serves shoppers in 29 European markets, including the UK and Switzerland, and says it has a clear ambition with the service that it gives its customers.

“At Decathlon, our mission is simple,” says a Decathlon UK spokesperson. “We want to motivate and inspire everyone living in the UK to be more active and as a result have a better, healthier lifestyle. Our customers come to us as they trust the quality and value of our product offer. All of our products are created and tested in-house and are designed around the needs of passionate sportspeople. People come to us to try new activities and find their passion. They also come sometimes to just spend a nice day out with their family in one of our stores, where their children can try different sports and activities.”

Decathlon has more than 2,000 shops in 56 countries, including 29 European markets, but during the pandemic it, as with other retailers, saw its customers go online to buy. This started as a short-term response to store closures as a result of Covid-19 lockdowns, but many now believe this heralds a permanent shift, and that people will opt to do more of their shopping over the internet.

How Decathlon’s customers choose to buy online

About two-thirds (65%) of Decathlon’s shoppers arrive at its website from a mobile device, and says, Decathlon UK, its shoppers also engage with it via social. “We have very active communities on our social networks and have regular online fitness sessions led by some of our brand ambassadors,” its spokesperson says.

Once shoppers arrive at the website they are keen to read product reviews – the retailer is one of the 56% of RXEU Top1000 retailers who share customer product reviews and the 53% who share customer ratings. As well as enabling shoppers to share their opinions, it also shares the expert insights and advice of its staff in their own reviews and in expert guides on, for example, how to choose an item, and how to use it once bought. Those viewing tents, for example, can see videos showing not only how to put it up, but also how and why it was designed as it was. And in the climbing section, visitors can get expert advice on choosing essential equipment and a list of what needs to go in the backpack.

In recent years the retailer has fulfilled online orders via a mix of home delivery and click and collect, both from its own stores and via 600 branches of Asda. But during lockdown, it saw a “huge shift” towards ordering for home delivery. Today, demand for home delivery remains high, although some shoppers now opt to pick-up through click and collect in shops because that option is free. Still others now want to shop in-store but have their purchases delivered to the home from the store.

Changes in the way that customers now want to be served have prompted Decathlon’s new ‘at home’ repair services. Decathlon UK says it now takes a more local approach to multichannel retail, with deliveries from the local store and a new online booking system for services, while in-store bike experts have started to offer advice to online shoppers. “The after-sales website got a revamp so that customers can fix their products by themselves at home,” adds its spokesperson.

Looking to a more sustainable future

In the future the retailer expects to integrate its online services further with its physical stores. Services such as repair workshops and the ability to collect and return online orders will give shoppers a reason to come into its stores. There’s also a clear focus on sustainability. This, says Decathlon UK’s spokesperson, is “very important as we need to preserve our playground if we want to keep playing.” To that end, the retailer aims to have 100% renewable energy in all of its sites, and says that by next year all of its products will be designed with the environment in mind. In August the retailer will launch a project aimed at recycling its products and giving them a second life.

Decathlon, ranked Top25 in this report in three sections, Operations & Logistics, Strategy & Innovation, and Merchandising, is a strong example of how multichannel retailers have been able to respond quickly to huge changes in the way that shoppers buy during Covid-19 lockdowns. This should mean it is well placed to adapt as shoppers’ demand for online and in-store shopping and services changes in the future as well.

New on Sports Illustrated: Boilermakers deliver winning road show at Indiana, 74-62

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Purdue finally figured out how to put together an impressive road show.

Eric Hunter Jr. scored 12 points, Aaron Wheeler added 11 and Wheeler and Isaiah Thompson didn't miss a 3-pointer Saturday to send the Boilermakers past Indiana 74-62.

''�saiah and Aaron between them are 5 for 5 (on 3s) so if you want to do something special and win at a place like Assembly Hall, you've got to have some guys step up and be special,'' Boilermakers coach Matt Painter said. ''We were tonight.''

They didn't have a choice.

The raucous crowd inside Assembly Hall started rocking early, in anticipation of seeing Bob Knight back on his home court for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Knight was introduced during a halftime ceremony along with former players, including members of the Hoosiers' 1980 Big Ten championship team.

But with Purdue's stifling defense forcing 14 turnovers and its offense showing signs of finally getting in sync, the Boilermakers (14-10, 7-6 Big Ten) could be on the verge of turning things around just in time for a postseason run.

They've won three straight overall, six in a row against the Hoosiers and now have back-to-back road wins after losing their first five in conference play.

''We just felt like mixing things up here the past two or three games, still running set but mixing in more motion (offense) doesn't get them sitting on every single thing. So hopefully we can catch them by surprise.''

Indiana (15-8, 5-7), in contrast, is struggling.

Despite getting 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists from Trayce Jackson-Davis, the Hoosiers lost their fourth straight and their second in a row at home. Justin Smith added 11 points and five rebounds for the Hoosiers, who trailed the entire second half.

Purdue needed just one good run - a 12-0 scoring spurt to close the first half - to swing the game. It gave the Boilermakers a 37-28 lead, which they extended to 54-38 with 12:39 left.

The Hoosiers responded with a 12-2 run, cutting the deficit to 56-50, but Purdue answered with seven straight points to put it away.

''Our turnovers in the first half really killed our momentum, and their run at the end of the half was really a deflating deal,'' Indiana coach Archie Miller said. ''But Purdue deserves credit, they executed well.''

BIG PICTURE

Purdue: The Boilermakers seem to have found some solutions to their previous woes. They've reached the 60-point mark in three consecutive road games, winning two of them. And with four of their last seven at home, where they score 17.2 points more per game, they could be set up for a strong finish.

Indiana: After beating Michigan State three weeks ago, it appeared the Hoosiers might make a move. Instead, they've taken a step back. The offense struggled to get in sync Saturday and 10 first-half turnovers certainly didn't help. Now, after four straight losses, Indiana needs a quick turnaround.

Purdue: Sasha Stefanovic had 10 points. ... The Boilermakers were 8 of 16 on 3-pointers and had a 33-17 scoring advantage off the bench. ... Purdue also had a 28-20 edge in points in the paint.

GOOD KNIGHT

Miller is old enough to remember Knight as a coach and what made his teams successful.

His players, maybe not so much. But they do understand the significance of having the winningest coach in school history inside Assembly Hall, wearing an Indiana basketball sweatshirt.

''He's a legend,'' said Jackson-Davis, a freshman. ''He's the reason why people talk about IU basketball, really.''
