I just rewatched Parasyte: The Maxim for the first time since watching it years ago, and God I forgot how good it is. It's got such an interesting take on life and what it means to be human.
Spoiler warning for the big themes of the anime, along with mentions of major plot points, from this point forward. Highly recommend y'all go watch it.
Throughout the whole thing, Shinichi (among others) constantly talks about how the fundamental difference between humans and parasites is that humans are altruistic and emotional, and parasites are selfish and cold. But Reiko Tamura and Migi both end up sacrificing themselves to save humans. The way episode 23 ends wants to make you think the moral is that the parasites have become more human by becoming more emotional, that the fundamental difference was indeed selflessness, and the parasites are truly closer to humanity than anybody really thought. It certainly makes a plot-perfect ending.
Tumblr media
But episode 24 makes a thematically perfect ending by wrapping up Uragami's storyline. Because he also disproves the binary idea of parasites = emotionless = bad vs humans = emotional = good. He is arguably the most 'evil' character, because unlike any of the parasites, he's not even doing anything for the sake of survival for himself or his species. He kills, brutally, because he finds it thrilling and enticing. So the moral changes to saying it's useless to try and use conventionally human metrics of deciding how worthy another species is, especially when based on emotions, because there are plenty of humans who defy that explanation. There is no definite emotional quality that makes someone truly human.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also see Shinichi succinctly sum up at the end that we shouldn't try to apply human emotions to things that will never be human, and that something's lack of humanity, especially as a nonhuman thing, is not a flaw or something to be scorned. It's just how it is. No two species will ever fully grasp eachother. And that's OK. We're all alive, and all deserving of life and respect. And if that isn't the sum of my morals so far, I don't know what is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another very interesting theme that I don't see too often is the idea that you can't profess yourself as a lover of Earth in its entirety if you also claim to hate humanity. Humans are a part of Earth. We were all born here, and we, most of us at least, will all die here. We are just as much a part of the planet as are any other species we've discovered thus far. We've certainly done harm to the planet and its denizens, but that doesn't make us something foreign. Even if we are the equivalent of a virus, aren't viruses themselves parts of Earth too?
I absolutely adore this anime. I don't think I truly appreciated it when I watched it for the first time. It beautifully encapsulates the complexity of both environmentalism and the nature of humanity as a whole. I could write for ages about it. But I think I'll leave it at this for now.
If y'all haven't, please go watch it. It's only got 24 ~20 minute episodes, and it's such a refreshing take on what's usually a 'humans are the real bad guys!!' moral.
And since I plan to read the manga now too, y'all should expect more Parasyte posts in the future.

Parasyte: the maxim
Genre: Action/Horror/Sci-fi
Warnings: Gore/ Murder/ Blood/ Violence/ Bugs
This is one I've wanted to watch for a while but I've been putting off for a specific reason. I watched the first episode a while ago and the MOMENT I saw a bug like creature burrowing in a boy's arm I QUIT. I watch many disturbing things but the thing that gets to me is bugs. Don't ask why I have no clue. Anyway, basically I closed my eyes during that scene, since it only happens once, and I knew I would like this anime.
The story follows Izumi Shinichi, a high school boy who lives with a parasite in his arm called Migi. Together they fight other parasites who succeeded in taking over their host's brain.
In a way this anime reminded me of Tokyo Ghoul; probably due to the human shaped and human eating creatures but also in the way that the protagonist is something in between, someone who struggles with his identity due to the nature of his situation.
Honestly I don’t have much to say about the anime. It was good, the horror part for me was a bit lacking, it wasn’t giving too much horror. The gore and fights were more shounen level than anything, at least with the more recent standards. But even comparing it to Tokyo Ghoul that came out around the same time, it could’ve done more when it came to the horror aspect.
I liked the brief commentary on the environment and how everything is connected tho I would’ve liked to see it being explored a bit further.
Overall it was a good watch. I still hate bugs tho.

Thanks for reading another anime ramble! Enjoy watching :)

Transformers Prime/ Parasyte: The Maxim Crossover AU Idea.
There's something wrong with Jackson Darby...
Most wouldn't know it by first glance.
He seems like an average teenager. Honestly, there's nothing really significant about him. He lives with his mom, goes to school, works at a mediocre job to help support the two of them.
If you ask anyone, they couldn't give you an exact description. His whole personality is just so bland and neutral.
Nothing really stands out about him.
And that's how "Jack" prefers it...
You see, the personality he presents is just a facade. Something he uses to keep himself safe and unsuspisious.
Because their are people out their still searching for him, his kind.
So he plays as Jackson Darby and will continue to play his role if it means the security of his existence.
Tumblr media
And beware to anyone who tries to break his cover.....
