The 4 phases of our menstrual cycle
🩸 Menstruation (Days 1-5) - the phase where we bleed; this is when the uterus sheds its lining due to drop in hormone levels, resulting in bleeding for 3-5 days.
🌱 Follicular phase (Days 6-14)- This is when the body prepares for ovulation by producing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulates the growth of a follicle in the ovary. As the follicle grows, it produces estrogen, which thickens the uterine lining. Ovulation typically occurs around Day 14.
🐣 Ovulation (Day 14)- This is when the mature follicle releases an egg into the fallopian tube. The surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) triggers ovulation. This phase is usually the most fertile time of the menstrual cycle.
😴 Luteal phase (Days 15-28) - This is when the ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone to thicken the uterine lining and prepare it for possible implantation of a fertilized egg. If the egg is not fertilized, hormone levels drop, and the uterine lining sheds during the next menstrual phase.
I believe it’s so important we know our menstrual cycle phases and get in tune with our own bodies.
This way we can identify what’s normal for us and what is not.
With this post, I want to give you a little general idea of the four phases so we can discuss all about normal menstruation and menstrual disorders in the next posts.

Please read ‼️ One day I received a message from a man who calls himself a feminist shaming me for making comics about periods. He first insulted my English (?) and then proceeded to shame me and bring me down for sharing my experiences with my period in my comics and being period positive. Then he blocked me before I could even respond. My immediate thought was: why does he call himself a feminist? And then I made this. It’s been sitting in my image library for months. I didn’t want to share it without more information. So please read below: 🚨 Globally, an estimated 500 million people who menstruate lack access to menstrual products and hygiene facilities. 🚨 There are an estimated 16.9 million people who menstruate living in poverty in the United States. 🚨52% of Brazilian people who menstruate have suffered from period poverty at some point, having no access to basic higiene items like water, pads and tampons. 🚨 Around 2,9 million of students have missed class for lack of basic period higiene items at least once in Brazil. 🚨 A study involving college-aged individuals who menstruate reported that 14.2% had experienced period poverty in 2020 in the US. An additional 10.0% experienced it every month. These are only a few of the data collected around this topic about Brazil (my country) and the US. There are even more disturbing data like people using toilet paper, newspaper, and even pieces of bread(!) to absorb the period blood 🩸 Please make an effort to quickly google about the topic in your country and see what the data there is. Feel free to share in the comments to raise everyone’s awareness to this issue. So what do we do??? Under capitalism we can donate and what not, but poverty will continue to exist since capitalism itself can’t exist without it. The answer? I’ll let you connect the dots. #periodpoverty #periodproblems #periodpositive #capitalism #pobrezamenstrual #comicstrip #daniellepioli #sliceoflife https://www.instagram.com/p/CpnzpFIAl4t/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

How To Get rid of Abdominal Pain During Periods (Home Remedies)
Tumblr media
What is period pain?
Before knowing the causes of period pain, it is important to understand what period pain is. In fact, in medical terms, the problem of pain during periods is called dysmenorrhea. It is mainly of two types. The first of which is primary dysmenorrhea and the second is secondary dysmenorrhea.
The causes of both these types of pain can be different. During the period, some women start to experience back pain, abdominal pain or cramping pain. There may be some of the following reasons behind this problem, which we have discussed in detail in the next part of the article.
Reasons for Periods:
Abdominal and back pain is a common problem during periods. Prostaglandins cause this pain. It is a type of hormone, which is secreted near the uterus. This hormone is also activated during childbirth. Prostaglandins are a group of lipids that fight damage or infection and disease. Read More

Periods in your 20's v/s 40's
Tumblr media
Most of us may think that isn't it the same bleeding, cramps and PMS. But no, your menstrual cycle changes as you grow and here's how periods can differ in your 20's and 40's.
Periods in your 20's
In your teens, when you just started bleeding, you re still adjusting to the cycle and there's always an unexpected surprise apperance. But as you reach your 20's, your cycle gets more consistent.
Tumblr media
The cycle is more or less fixed and is monthly. Not to mention the start of the unpleasant symptoms of breast tenderness, PMS and nasty cramps. Many menstruators around this age start taking hormonal pills due to various reasons. The pill triggers changes to your flow, making it lighter, less pain and PMS or more regularised periods.
In fact, birth control pills prevent ovulation, and without ovulation, there's no uterine lining buildup that has to be shed, this can result in no flow.
Periods in your 40's
Tumblr media
It's the beginning of more changes, including perimenopausal hormonal fluctuations, which are precursors to menopause. Your body starts preparing for menopause. These hormone fluctuations cause ovulation to be more irregular, and your estrogen level change means you could start experiencing missed periods, a heavier flow, spotting between periods, and longer stretches of PMS.
During perimenopause your periods can be less predictable and even if ovulation is erratic, you can still get pregnant. A woman isn't in menopause until her periods have ceased for at least a year.
Tumblr media
Take care and make sure to note your change in cycle.

MENSTRUATION HISTORY
Tumblr media
Menstruation, the regular discharge of blood and mucosal tissue from the inner lining of the uterus, has been a fundamental aspect of human biology and reproductive health throughout history. While the biological process itself remains constant, the social, cultural, and medical attitudes towards menstruation have varied significantly across different cultures and time periods. Here is an overview of how menstruation has been perceived and managed in history:
Ancient Cultures:
In many ancient cultures, menstruation was often associated with concepts of fertility and power. In some societies, menstruating women were even considered sacred due to their connection with the life-giving force of reproduction. For example, in ancient Egypt, menstrual blood was believed to have protective and healing properties.
Religious and Superstitious Beliefs:
Some societies held superstitious beliefs about menstruation. Women were often isolated or considered impure during their periods. In Hinduism, for instance, menstruating women were historically kept separate from others and considered ritually impure. Similar practices were found in various other cultures and religions.
Medical Understanding and Misunderstanding:
Throughout much of history, there was limited understanding of the biological processes involved in menstruation. Many societies attributed menstrual symptoms to mysterious causes, and various remedies and rituals were practiced to alleviate discomfort. It wasn't until more recent centuries that a more accurate understanding of the menstrual cycle emerged.
19th Century:
The 19th century marked a significant period of change in how menstruation was understood. Medical knowledge about the female reproductive system advanced, leading to the development of more accurate explanations for menstruation. However, the topic was still surrounded by taboos, and open discussions were uncommon.
20th Century:
Menstruation started to be viewed more openly as medical advancements continued. The invention and widespread use of disposable sanitary products, like tampons and pads, in the mid-20th century significantly transformed how menstruating individuals managed their periods. Menstrual hygiene became a focus, and education about menstruation started to become more common.
 Feminist Movement :
In the latter half of the 20th century, feminist movements played a crucial role in destigmatizing menstruation. Activists advocated for open conversations about periods, challenging the shame and secrecy that had surrounded the topic for centuries. This led to greater awareness, improved menstrual education, and initiatives to make menstrual products more accessible.
Contemporary Attitudes:
Today, attitudes toward menstruation vary widely across cultures and regions. While many societies have made strides in normalizing conversations about periods and providing better menstrual education, there are still places where stigma and misinformation persist. Additionally, discussions around menstrual equity, access to affordable menstrual products, and the impact of menstruation on various aspects of life, such as education and work, continue to be important topics.
In conclusion, the history of menstruation reflects the complex interplay of cultural, religious, medical, and social factors. Over time, there has been a gradual shift from superstition and secrecy to greater understanding and acceptance, although challenges related to stigma and inequity still persist in various parts of the world.
