Anyway something I think about a lot is how widespread literacy really homogenized and fossilized spoken language

Used to be a word was what you thought it was, and if an eggcorn caught on with enough people in your village that just became the word for a thing in your local dialect. And words were spelled however you thought they were spelled. Things like Spinch and Ranibow Sprimkle hint at how words might have morphed if we didn't have a 'correct' spelling to refer to, a standard to keep us all in line
