The expedition left McConnel with a low opinion of Uhr: "He is no bushman, & he had not the slightest idea of the 'lay' of the country." But he was impressed by old Merchant Jones joining his pioneering journey into the bush.
We ascended the ranges & kept on the top of them, travelling North till we saw a perspect of good country, which we soon did; descended to a creek running due North, through a fine open country, very well adapted for sheep, & the grass abounding in herbage; & after riding over this country & ascertaining that there was abundance of water, & the country was well adapted for stock, being situated on a land 2000 feet above the sea, & very open, & free from scrub, & sufficient to hold 50000 sheep at least . . . Our adventures were not numerous; we saw no blacks to disturb us, & we had gone weather, except one heavy thunderstorm; so that altogether I enjoyed the expedition very much. It is exceedingly delightful & causes great excitement to the mind to travel over new country in which white man has never trod.
