(Text from the AD&D Players Handbook by Gary Gygax, TSR, 1978) For most purposes, AD&D expressed distances in inches that equated to 10 feet in dungeon settings and 10 yards when outdoors. This applied to movement rates, weapon ranges, and spell ranges -- but not spell areas of effects.
The last paragraph hints at the confusing movement rules later in the PHB. Movement rates in inches were kept constant but used different time scales for different situations, so 12" movement meant 120' per 10 minute turn when exploring underground, but following a known route is 5 times faster so 120' of movement per 2 rounds (2 minutes), and fleeing or combat movement is 10 times faster so 120' per 1 round (the 1 minute melee round during which one attack can be made) which equals 12' per 6 second segment. Gygax acknowledged the latter seems slow but "consider the conditions -- whether prolonged physical exertion or the threat of hostile counter to the movement."

A Vintage RPG Podcast re-run? Yep, first time for everything. Sometimes you just gotta rest the brains. So have a Players Handbook! Originally aired to a whole different world, on December 23, 2019.

Life is throwing all kinds of crazy at me at the moment. But hey at least this first edition players handbook for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons from 1978 arrived to cheer me up.
Hopefully, if I can make sense of the rules compared to 5e, I might have a go at DMing for the first time and run an old school one shot. A big scary castle full of goblins, bugbears, might chuck in a beholder, or maybe even a dungeon of beholders with a big old boss in the middle. Lovely!

"Step right up, step right up! The Stone-Skinned Man takes on any challenger, any weapon, any dreamer!"
The call, ever so subtly twisted by the magic used to amplify it, bellowed out over the crowd. The carnival'd been visiting Tanin for some days now and had more than earned its keep in the eyes of the common folk. Magical attractions, hysterical performances, a veritable waking dream for the weary worker and tired tradesman - until the fifth morning came.
Dozens of takers stepped up to the stand, brandishing unlit torches and sickles and mallets alike, and each struck at the bare chest, the exposed neck, the bald head of the latest freak on display, and each came away exhausted - too much so to notice the man twist his fingers and mumble some arcane nonsense or other as they left.
"Like striking an anvil with a twig," said one.
"Had an easier time knocking down my chimney," said another.
Then, out of the throng stepped a stranger. A traveler, none had bothered to ask their name nor angle. Without a word, they drew the sabre from their hip and held it high, then brought it down on the shoulder of that poor performer.
His arm hit the stage first, followed by the fast-fading shards of his little magic trick.
Then the rest of him.

I've said it before and I'll say it again and again...
Astarion would have a phenomenal ass.
As a rogue aficionado, let me go into why.
Acrobatics proficiency = gymnast's build (even better if he has expertise in it)
High dexterity = dancer's build
Sneaking / Crouching = constant squats
Uncanny Dodge / Evasion = basically lunges + glute bridges
Thief subclass + Second-Story Work = step ups and/or jump squats
Lock picking = reverse lunge to get in positon
Basically, his whole day is filled with an excellent set of ass exercises. Throw in a few more things like donkey kicks and clam shells and his entire posterior would be covered.
Now would he have a huge butt? Not necessarily-- but it would certainly be quite toned and, at a very minimum, a good size for grabbing. 🖐🏽
In conclusion: he got buns hun.
Thank you for coming to my recurring TedTalk. I'll see you again next time I'm thinking of the pale elf's butt.

word of god* isn't canon**!!!
*something a writer, developer, author, or other creative says
**found in a published or otherwise officially released material
canon doesn't even mean "true," it just means in the source material.
stop going to creatives for their drafts and opinions and build fandom with your bare hands and beating hearts again!!!

After 36 years of knowing precisely zero things about D&D, I'm going to be part of my first campaign this winter! I've been doing so much reading and my DM's been great about easing me into it—sending me books, giving me worksheets, assigning me homework (one assignment was to watch Vox Machina, which I loved).
Yesterday I sent him a document I whipped up on my lunch hour of four profiles of potential characters I could play.
He sent me back: holy shit i have no notes. how are you so good at this?
Me, having spent the last 27 years in fandom playing in other people's sandboxes: it's a mystery!
tldr I'm getting an A+ in my D&D prereq course
