How to get Shiny Applin without picnic resets or an outbreak

(Kudos to @shiny-kaibernyte for showing me this method, thank you!!)

What you need:

Turn OFF auto-save in your game settings

Any two Herba Mysticas (for the sandwich)

A tall Pokemon (I used Koraidon, but anything around that height works!)

Step 1: Head to Tagtree Thicket

It's along the fence of the Poison Crew's Base! Look for the two painted trees right next to the Poison Crew's Base icon on the map. Then stand about where my player is in the image below:

Step 2: Save the game

Make sure you have auto-save OFF!! This way you can close the game and reset to your last save if you don't get a shiny Applin and your sandwich effects run out. You will KEEP the Herba Mysticas you used if you save BEFORE making the sandwich.

Step 3: Make the sandwich

Follow the image guide above and make the Dragon Type sandwich. Do NOT save the game after making the sandwich.

Step 4: Kill those Applins!

From where you're standing, Applin will start to spawn in the painted tree across from you. Lock onto it with ZL and auto-battle it with Koraidon (or your tall Pokemon of choice). If you did it right, you'll notice that Applin just... keeps spawning in that one spot. Koraidon will stay in its spot and keep defeating the Applins over and over as long as they keep spawning in.

You may need to redirect Koraidon back to the Applins sometimes. Just lock on with ZL and press R. Now sit back, relax, and wait for your Shiny Applin to appear! Your Pokemon will not defeat shiny Pokemon, so if Koraidon ignores the Applin and you see a green apple in the tree, that's your cue.

So! After FINALLY finding an Applin, I hatched four eggs, and sent out baby Applin holding Premier Balls. What did I get back? UHHH, SOME REALLY COOL ‘MONS?? Had to jump on and share.

First was a non-Paldean Wooper, which you can only get by trading with an NPC in-game. Very nice choice! While I already have one from doing the trade, it was still sweet to see. 

Next is Sinistea!! I’ve only just caught one myself. I plan to collect a tea set’s worth lol

Third was Scorbunny??? I freaked out. Sushi you benevolent being :0 I used to have a cat named Sushi so when I saw the name I was like “Ha, Sushi’s playing Pokemon, good for her. Nah I shouldn’t think like that. If it’s a throw away trade I’ll just be sad and--”

Anyway, thank you, Sushi! ;;_;;

Finally, Gengar! Never a bad find. And this one has the Ice tera power, which is cool (wink) so no complaints here!

Overall, VERY productive evening! Don’t be afraid to tell me about your own surprise trades-- either what you’re putting into the world or what you’re getting from it. Personally I’m having a ton of fun thinking of what to make my trades hold on their journey.

Thinking about Pokémon stuff

One of Applin’s Pokédex entries says that in Galar, it’s a tradition to give an Applin to someone as a profession of love, and as a wish/promise to stay together forever

I want to find someone that I can give an Applin to; platonically, romantically, or whatever I don’t care

I will find or make them the best Applin plush/figure/whatever that I can (preferably make so it has more meaning, but we’ll have to see how our skills are in this theoretical future) and give it to them.
