The votes are in and the new Polyamory Flag is here!

The intention behind this design was to create a simple, bold tricolor, with a contemporary approach to traditional vexillological (relating to the study of flags) elements from the original “Pi” flag.

It takes the best of the original flag, including its color symbolism, and improves on those elements of the Pi flag which alienated viewers.

A white chevron flows outward to depict the growth and possibility of the non-monogamous community. It sits asymmetrically on the flag to reflect the non-traditional style of polyamorous relationships.

The heart reminds us that love in all forms is the core of non-monogamy.

As in the original polyamory flag:

Red stands for love and attraction.

Blue stands for openness and honesty.

However, this redesign also makes thoughtful alterations:

Gold represents the energy and perseverance of those in the non-monogamous community.

Purple to represent a united non-monogamous community.

I hate the new polyamourous flag it feels like forgetting our history and a kick in the face.

I get the original one is eyestrain and that's why people make eyestrain accessible flags! But fucking ditching the original flag in favour of this shitty redesign is shit and feels like forgetting history for me. We don't need a new flag, the original one is fine, the creator is good and the symbolism is good. The new flag is shit imo.

okay having actually looked it up, the whole redesigning the poly flag thing was just fucking disgusting, entitled bullshit from start to fucking finish and I'm honestly appalled that nobody told fucking ~polyamproud~ where to shove their concern troll fuckery.

THIS is the polyamory flag. It was made by Jim Evans in 1995. The blue stripe represents respect and open communication between partners, the red stripe represents passion and love, the black stripe represents solidarity and community. The pi symbol not only speaks to the infinite potential partners and types of relationships poly people can have, but was specifically a COVERT symbol meant to connect the community without the risk of discovery and discrimination by anti-poly monogamists.

All the Sloths (New Heart Polyamory) - Pride Sloths

I'll be honest, I've only seen this one around here and there, but it currently has one more vote for it than the original pi polyamory flag, so here it goes! I think color-wise, it's prettier than what we use now, but it is a little top-heavy for me. I have never seen a chevron (that's the triangular part) designed like that.

Honestly the “new” polyam flag seems like the definition of valuing the aesthetic of marginalization and not the history or reality of the oppressed.

1. I’m never going to be ok with trying to force a 30 year old symbol out “cause it’s not pretty enough”. Ppl have gotten brutalized for carrying the Polyam flag, do not care if it doesn’t fit your vibe.

It’s especially egregious given the fact at best the polyam flag needed a hue shift and maybe a symbol change if pie -really- is that hard for y’all to figure out added to the fact self submissions weren’t accepted.

2. I’m so curious if anyone on this team has design experience in regards to redesigns bc the very basic 101 is a redesign should look fresh but recognizable…. I would not know that the “new” polyam flag was a pride flag let alone the polyam one. It looks like a company logo flag at best.

Over all this shit just reeks of over confidence and I know best from eight ppl out of a community of millions. And I extremely dislike it.

Polyamorous relationships are diverse and come in many forms and dynamics. not everyone is the same and the relationships between the partners may all be different. it may look like two or more people dating one same partner but not each other or it may look like a whole web of connected relationships like constellations in the sky. the polyamory does not strictly have to be romantic or sexual relationships.

Monogamous relationships are the opposite of polyamory, they are a relationship between two people, although that does not mean both partners are monogamous. one might be poly one might be mono but a monogamous person is only in a relationship with that one person. some people feel complete just being in that one, some people feel complete in multiple, both are incredibly valid in their own right.
