⤷ female, ambiguous race, and any size reader. Requests are open, thank you for reading!
a/n: this is definitely self-indulgence. There is BARELY anything for Musketeers, and I don’t know WHY. It was such a good show?! If you haven’t seen it, it’s on Stan (for Aussies).
Warnings: mention of racism, and the treatment of black people (I don’t want to trigger any of my readers)
ᴹᵃˢᵗᵉʳˡᶤˢᵗ
𝑺𝑭𝑾🌿
・Is very proud to call you his partner. He’s just so honoured that you want to be with him, that it’s difficult not to talk about you.
“And she knows so much abou-”
“Yes! Porthos we know! Y/N is amazing, but please... just ... she’s all you ever talk about,” Aramis says with his arms in the air. (He’s not being dramatic, Porthos only talks about you, legitimately.)
・Was a bit wary about your work but warmed up to you once you explained it. To me, Porthos gives off a bit of Himbo energy™
・Whenever there’s danger, he protects you with his whole body
     “Porthos, you’re squashing me-”
“Shhhh, there’s danger.”
・You get along really well with Aramis. He’s a lively and funny man, who likes to tell the most embarrassing stories of Porthos
・You give him things to take when he’s away on assignments. Lavender to help calm and to sleep, a bay leaf in his jacket pocket, and a satchet of cloves.
・He has a strong moral compass, and when the world gets too hard, he comes to you and falls apart. Porthos knows you’ll always be there to help put him back together again
・Knowing his background and where he came from. Enslavement and being a black man affects Porthos in his day to day life. You always want to hear if anyone has done anything to him. You will protect Porthos in every way you can.
・Porthos always makes you feel safe, protected, and he gives you the space to be yourself.
・You don’t hide anything from each other, and promise to be truthful. Secrets are what damage relationships.
・Porthos can change your mood in an instant. He brings you out of so many slumps
・He isn’t as energetic as Aramis (who hates being still), but Porthos still likes to have adventures. However, if you do not wish to, then he’s happy just spending his time at home with you
・Porthos gets angry about the injustices he sees in his day-to-day life. But that’s the only time you see his temper rise. He has never yelled at you, never. He’s never slammed anything, or expressed his anger in physical ways. He’s never even made you jump (well he has, but that’s because he surprised you by coming home early).
・He absolutely HATES spiders. Despises them. Thinks they’re creepy and will tell you to get rid of it.
・Likes to share his food with you - feeding you absentmindedly, especially when the food is really good.
・You never have to worry about Porthos straying. His loyalty is unending.
・Bit of a crybaby when he’s wounded (only in front of you though. When the guys are around, he doesn’t flinch.) But he loves being coddled by you.
・ You’re very good friends with Constance. She visits you often, especially when the men are away on an assignment. If they’re gone for multiple days, she may sleep over.
・It’s often you, who the men come to when they need fixing up. You can help with sleeplessness, headaches, stitching up wounds, to popping shoulders back into place.
・Your come from a low-class family, and doctors were too expensive, so all your neighbours either suffered or died. You wanted to help people, and so you learned as much as you could from anyone and everyone.
・Some say you’re a witch, because you know so much. Or maybe it’s because you learned a lot from women
𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒈𝒆:
All of them?
Porthos is such a loving man. He’s so ready for love, he was just waiting for you to come along.
𝐺𝑖𝑓𝑡 𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔:  He absolutely adores getting you gifts (he brings tokens back from his travels.
𝑄𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒:  He loves spending all his free time with you, doing anything and everything; horseback riding, training, teaching you how to handle weapons (he always wants you to know as much as you can).
𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐴𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛:  He loves telling you how much you mean to him, and he melts whenever he hears it back. When he’s away from you and missing you, he’ll pull out one of your scarfs and smell it, remembering how much you love him.
𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑖𝑐𝑒:  He will get you tools and supplies whenever you need it. Maybe he doesn’t know when you’re getting low, and you have to tell him, but he will go into town and fetch them willingly.
𝑃𝘩𝑦𝑠𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑇𝑜𝑢𝑐𝘩: Maybe this is his favourite love language. Porthos wants nothing in this world but you. To hold you in his arms, to play with your hair and smell your skin. He loves when you show him the same physical love back. The gentle caresses on his arm, the kisses, god, it’s all he needs in this world.
𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒆 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈:
Wondrous Love by Bear McCreary
𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝑻𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒔:
(Porthos gets more because ... god he fits into so many tropes and not a lot of characters do! Also because this is self-indulgent and Porthos is one of my all-time favourite characters.)
・Protective Gremlin x Giant Teddy Bear
・Height Difference
・Would Die For Each Other
・Emotional Support Animal In Human Form
・ Dumbass x Oh God I Guess That’s My Dumbass
・You fell first but they fall harder
𝑹𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑷𝒍𝒐𝒕 𝑻𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆:
Clueless Love
𝑵𝑺𝑭𝑾 🔞minors dni!
・Daddy kink, god, the first time you called him daddy ... he nearly came right then.
・Breeding kink - likes to fill you with his seed. If you fell pregnant, he would definitely have a lactation kink as well. Seeing your belly full and round ... god, it would drive him insane
・His favourite place to have sex, is in the kitchen. It’s close to the kitchen table, where he likes to bend you over and fuck you until you cry with pleasure
・Always leaves hickies on your tits. It’s his way of marking you, even though no one else will see.
・Is very giving but absolutely LOVES receiving head. If you gag on his cock, this man will cum nearly instantly.
・Very very very big cock. Nearly 10 inches when he’s hard
・Absolutely adores dirty talk. He wants to hear you say the nastiest things while he’s inside you

Where are my fanfics where the queen goes full feral after S2 and takes no ones shit (least of all the Kings (you believed him Louis, over me, and you'll be paying me back for that the rest of our lives)) instead of becoming too catious and subdued in fear of her position
The fics where she says fuck you I am the queen of France and these are my Musketeers
Where she calls the boys her friends and calls on them as her regular guard just so they can hang out and turns her nose up at Louis when he seeths about it
Where she has our 4 musketeers raise her son, the future king of France, because she knows that this county that is hers now deserve better than the type of King Louis would raise
Where she writes to them at the front to check on them and to provide intel on Spain because she was a Spanish princess but now she is Queen of France and that is who she it. The woman that forces her was into the war councils to beat knowledge of Spanish politic and land and strategy into the men that have led her county into war (the war her marriage was supposed to prevent the the first place)
Fics where she gossips and spends time with Constance talking about their musketeers, where she's snubbed by the king at another ball so goes to her noble Athos for a dance instead, where she asks Porthos to teach her how to defend herself, where she teases D'Artagnan about being a baby musketeer so he tells her all the embarrassing stories about the other three that they would never want her to know until she is crying with laughter, and yes, when she tells Aramis not to go because she needs a friend and if you leave people will still talk but then I would be alone so he stays
Because I want all the fics

D'Artagnan x fem!reader
⤞ My masterlist ⤝
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A/N: Hiii, so yeah, this is basically my first post of a one-shot I wrote like a year ago but I am still proud of it to this day. At first it was written based on D'Artagnan from the movie The Three Musketeers but later on I realised that it works perfectly with the one from the series as well so you got both of them here haha. I also decided to leave this in a 3rd pov despite reader's involvement in this story. Anyway, please enjoy and let me know how you like it ;D
Warning: none it's just fluff
Summary: D'Artagnan and his wife wake up to another morning in their bed until they realise the daunting truth of what is to come.
♦️ ♦️ ♦️ ♦️
Another cold morning had hit the residents of Paris. The early busy streets were haunted by a mysterious fog and the warm breaths of people talking with each other in hopes of buying something for what little they had. Amongst the civilians, a bunch of feathered hats moved around. The musketeers, the pride and joy of the King's army, were up early and ready to protect their country and their King. All of them but one.
She pulled her bedsheets up, trying to hide from the merciless cold that had crept into her usually warm bedroom. She could use the feeling of his body to fight the cold but found no strength to search for his touch as her place in the bed was partially warmed up by her. As if her thoughts called him, his arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her closer to his chest. It felt just like the usual morning they were to spend together. Except it wasn't.
The reality hit her like a wild horse and broke all of her dreams of a lovely morning into pieces. "Charles," she croaked. There was no response but she knew he was up, he was a light sleeper, his profession made him to be one. "Charles," she tried again. A sound returned to her voice and finally hit his ears as he snuggled closer to the crook of her neck.
"Oui, mon ange?" he mumbled against her skin, placing a small kiss. It was prickling like a needle as she slowly realized it might have been one of the last kisses she was to receive from him.
"You have to go," her voice shook and she gulped, to swallow the lump in her throat caused by the urge to cry.
He groaned, realizing the truth as well, but choosing to ignore it in favor of more cuddles. "No, we still have time."
She sighed as she glanced at the clock, "No, we don't, the musketeers will be here any minute." She started wiggling, trying to break free from his grip that only tightened, making her break a smile whilst she kept on trying. "I have to prepare you a bath. And get your clothes,"
"No, you don't, I can do it later," he muttered sleepily, pulling her as close as physically possible.
"I do, or you'll have to go through the embarrassment of being dragged out of the bed naked by one of your brothers in arms," she giggled, hitting his hand which had proven to be the right method to make him let go.
"Please don't leave," he begged, setting off a tear down her cheek. However, it quickly dried as she gasped when the freezing air hit her skin, biting into every inch of her naked body.
She quickly dressed herself, and he, unbeknownst to her, was watching her with adoration. All of her motions, the way she tied her hair into a ponytail with a black tie, creating a small bowtie at the top. How she quickly put on her underwear to fight of the spreading goosebumps on her skin, small almost inaudible gasps escaping her lips with each movement. The way she perfectly slipped into the black dress he gave her last winter, the one she wore every time he had to leave her. And after all those times, he learned to despise the dress, wishing he never had given it to her. Wishing she never had to put it on, on another of those mornings.
As she left the room, it was as if a symphony he didn't even realise was enveloping his entire world came to a halt. But then her voice rang across the house and he found himself fighting the cold outside their bed just to get to her. As he washed, she made sure everything was ready for him. She always did. She didn't even forget the small package of food for the way, no matter how many times he had told her that Porthos would bring something. And every time, he made sure to eat everything she packed for him instead of what Porthos had brought.
He was drying himself up when he noticed the unusual silence coming from his significant other. "Why so silent, amour?"
"Just a lot of thoughts," she shrugged, forcing a smile onto her lips, even though her eyes glistened with tears.
His posture softened under her teary gaze, but it didn't stop him from his usual habits. "You don't have to mourn, you know I will be back," he grinned arrogantly, letting out his boyish attitude to reduce her worries. But it was very like him to laugh in the face of Death and then escape, no matter how carelessly he threads the line between life and death. She smiled honestly this time, a small giggle escaping her lips and he wished he could trap it in a jar and take it with him. She opened her mouth to retort back but was interrupted by a sharp knock on the door.
"D'Artagnan, you better not be sleeping or I will break this door down and drag your ass out whether it's naked or not! Athos is already waiting for us on the academy grounds." Aramis' voice roared from the outside. Her eyebrow lifted, glancing at D'Artagnan who was half naked with a towel in his hands. "I suppose you are at the risk of a major embarrassment."
"I'm not if my love makes sure to hold them up for me," he smirked devilishly as she rolled her eyes, already heading for the door.  "Sometimes I wish to not do as you say and witness the actual threat getting fulfilled, I think I'd find it more than hilarious," she yelled at him in the middle of her tracks, a mischievous smile, he could see in his mind, painting her lips. "You wouldn't do me that dirty, you love me too much for something like that," he managed to answer while frantically trying to put on his pants.
"Do I really?" she teased, grabbing the door knob and twisting it.
"Hello, gentlemen," she smiled brightly at the two musketeers in front of her. They bowed their heads while holding their hats in an elegant matter, both smiling at her, Aramis appearing to be more joyful than any other time. "My lady."
"Definitely not yours!" D'Artagnan's voice thundered from the other room.
"She will be if you don't come out ready this instant!" Aramis snapped back, throwing a bold wink at the lady of the house. She could only roll her eyes at the cheesy gesture as she leaned on the door frame, preventing the two men from entering any further. She smiled politely. "You will have to forgive me, but I oppose to that idea, unfortunately,"
Aramis grabbed her hand and placed his lips on top of it. "Oh, what a shame, my gorgeous lady,"  he sighed after holding it for longer than appropriate, only making her chuckle.
"Fortunately!" Charles yelled out again.
"Mon amour, I cannot hold them much longer. Aramis is gonna be all over me if you don't get here soon," a smirk on her face met Aramis' similair one in front of her as Charles D'Artagnan appeared from behind her, accompanied by a loud crash.
He puffed out his chest after his 'graceful' entrance. "Weren't you the one who taught me not to profane the lady?" he send daggers Aramis' way, towering over the two of his friends, "And here you are, dragging my wife into whatever is going on in that head of yours. I think this matter cannot be resolved any other way than a proper fight upon our return," her eyes widened upon the words of her husband as she noticed the challenging sparks in the musketeers' eyes.
"In no way are you fighting after your return. I will be more than thankful to have you come in one piece after those few weeks so don't you even think about getting yourself killed the very next day," she turned around to fix his shirt and coat that was visibly put on in a hurry. However, she did not fail to handle his clothes with rough tugs, a heat rising in his chest from the warning fire in her eyes. "And you better not let him do anything stupid, I know he will try anyways," she turned around again, eyeing the other musketeers who bowed again under the urging flames.
"At your service, my lady," they smirked in Charles' face and set off running  when he gave chase and chased them all the way to the front yard and to where the horses were already prepared to set off. She followed them, walking to the front yard slowly with a soft laugh but quieted the second she saw them by the horses. D'Artagnan was still with his feet on the ground and waiting for her with a glint in his eyes. Oh, how she was going to miss his dark loving eyes only ever laid on her and the warmth of his body on all of those winter mornings. Oh, how he was going to miss the sweet, sweet smile of hers and the way her voice sounded between the walls of their house. How he was never looking forward to the deafening silence around him without her presence, despite Porthos' mouth never shutting up during the missions. It was a list of unspoken vows they never told to each other out loud but they could always feel it, the way the world stopped at that very moment.
And without any wait, when she was within his reach, he pulled her into a bittersweet kiss, sending thousands of painful but sweet needles down their lips as both of them knew this may be their last. It was long, full of longing and pain, but mesmerising enough to deafen Aramis' scoff in the back. "Please don't leave," she begged after their lips finally parted, her forehead resting on his. She begged again after he hopped on his horse and she again right before they departed. "You know I will come back," he reassured her. And yet, she kept on begging in silence, hoping that he would keep true to his word again just as he did up until now.

Author Spotlight: Wait and Hope by Veronica Sloane
About the author: Veronica Sloane has authored a novel, several short stories, some poetry, and twenty-two years worth of fanfic. She lives with one lovely spouse, one rambunctious clever child, and one sleepy cat.
Links: Archive of Our Own | Tumblr
About the Story: This modern fanfic tells the tale of Porthos, a waiter, and Aramis, a theology student, meeting for the first time—and then tells of their reunion, ten years later.
Story Teaser:
“My name is Porthos,” he offered, “and I’ll be your dining companion for the evening, if you’ll have me.”
“Is this a new waiter service?” Aramis asked, those lovely wide eyes going rounder.
“I’m officially no longer a waiter here.” Porthos took Aramis’s lack of objection as agreement and set the glasses before each of them, uncorking the bottle with an expert twist of the wrist.
“Were you fired?” Aramis asked, watching the wine trickle into his glass with avid attention.
“I’m graduating.”
“Me too. I’ve never seen you.”
“Business major.” Porthos poured his own glass generously. It was a very good white.
“Theology.”
“What do you do with that?”
“In my case? Become a priest.”
“No.” Porthos set down the bottle to stare at him. “Really? Does that still happen?”
“From time to time,” Aramis laughed.
“But why? Surely you can just study religion and go to church if you have to. I’m assuming; I don’t think I’ve set foot in a church since I was a kid. I’d probably catch fire.”
“God forgives. If you have faith.” The last was said a little more tremulously.
“And you must.”
“Must I?” Aramis picked up his wine.
“Then why the priesthood?”
“I believe. Faith is another matter.”

“I hate seeing you be in so much pain.” for portamis, perhaps for some aramis ouchies (emotional or physical, all up to you!) 🤭
It's gonna be a modern au because it's one hundred o'clock and I'm brainless
---
"Aramis."
Aramis didn't look up or acknowledge Porthos in any way. He kept staring out of the window, at the falling snowflakes. They didn't get snow often, but when they did, Aramis's old scar would act up.
"Hey." Porthos drew the curtains shut, knowing the kind of headaches Aramis could get from snowfall. "That's not gonna help, Aramis. The light must be hurting you."
Aramis squeezed his eyes shut. Oh, his head and his eyes and his whole body were aching. Aramis pressed his fingertips against his eyes, sighing. God, he was hurting so much.
"Let's get you somewhere more comfortable", Porthos said. He guided Aramis to the sofa and gently pushed him onto his back. "Lie down. I'll make you some cocoa. And warm the sandwiches we made earlier. I bet you haven't eaten in a while."
Aramis cracked open one eye. "Why?" he asked weakly.
"Because I hate seeing you in so much pain", Porthos replied, brushing some hair behind Aramis's ear, "and because you've been neglecting your needs. Again. We promised to each other to look after each other and ourselves. Let's not break that promise. You deserve better than what your mind is telling you."

Jak! Dearly beloved, I'm thrilled to see you on your Musketeers bullshit, you've reminded me how overdue I am for a rewatch. Would you happen to have any fic recs? 👀
Fleet my love! 🥰
*chants* rewatch rewatch rewatch!
I absolutely have recs! (they say as they check their bookmarks to find there is only one and the rest have fucking disappeared?!?! In my search to track them down again I may have missed some sorry...) My otp is Athos/d'Artagnan, Porthos/Aramis, and poly Athos/d'Artagnan/Porthos/Aramis (with Constance occasionally in the mix). I hope that's okay! And in an attempt to keep this list from being horrifically long I'm going to try and share one fic per author, but most have written several wonderful fics that are favs, so definitely check out their other works as well. (says this and immediately fails)
Une histoire de bleu by ceeturnalia (traveller) - This is my top favorite of all time for this fandom. I can't count how many times I've reread it, I have the dang thing nearly memorized lol. Rated E, D/s, Athos/d'Artagnan.
kairos & logos by ceeturnalia (traveller) - Rated E, soulmates and reincarnation, OT4. This fic lives rent free in my head nearly as much as Une histoire de bleu. It's not a coincidence they're both written by Cee, who is an incredible story teller.
Multiples of Three by Q__Q - Rated E, OT4. I'm a huge sucker for fics where d'Artagnan is unsure of where he stands with the rest of the gang until they all have to kiss about it.
Ye Heirs of Glory by Kyele - Rated E, a/b/o, Athos/d'Artagnan, Porthos/Aramis etc.. I will admit I never actually finished this one. If I remember correctly I got about halfway and was yanked into another hyperfixation and forgot all about it, but the world building is exquisite, and I have every intention of finishing it soon.
every time i see your face by cherryfeather - Rated E, OT5, just absolute sexy mouthwatering fivesome filth. Also highly recommend going through the rest of this author's works because they're amazing.
The Fruit of Knowledge by breathtaken - Rated E, Athos/d'Artagnan, undercover shenanigans that gets really real super quick. This is another I am constantly rereading because it's one, incredibly sweet, and two, spicy spicy spicy om nom. Also check out the rest of this author's works bc just wowza. The talent.
Forever (in Ink) by Isidore - Rated M, OT4, soulmates and soul marks. This fic is just a full course meal from start to end.
Pas de Quatre by zelda_zee - Rated E, OT4, incredibly written, clever, gorgeous, stunning, no notes.
Fate Will Bring Us Home by rthecynic - NR, OT4, soulmates and soulmarks in the form of flowers. So, so many flowers! The imagery of this one is just so delightful, and istg one day I'm going to draw them all.

A poly!musketeers fic
Description: Athos is very fond of spoiling his partners, especially after being apart.
A/N: Can you tell how much I love soft Musketeers? These guys deserve some fluff.
Athos wanted to go home. He’d been stuck in the rain and mud for five days, and he missed the comforts that home brought. He wished that one of the others had been able to come with to make the experience a bit less miserable, but d'Artagnan had been sick and Aramis offered to stay and take care of him, and Captain Trevill needed Porthos for some secret mission or another, so Athos had been given a few other musketeers and told to stakeout next to this godforsaken town for five days as security for some high ranking noble the King was fond of.
At first, Athos was glad to have something to do, ready to do anything he needed for the mission. Now, however, on their fifth day of travel, he just wanted to get home to his partners. That night, covered in mud and grime, Athos and the other musketeers gladly began the trek back to Paris. They had to pass through town to get to their road, and though Athos could hear the townspeople laughing when he turned his back, he was too tired to care. Then, as Athos was about to confront the laughing people, he saw something that caught his eye. In a small, tucked away shop window, there sat a small stuffed dragon, red and squat on its perch, illuminated by soft lamplight from behind. Athos stopped and stared, remembering how much d’Artagnan loved to talk about dragons, especially red fire breathers like this looked to be. He hesitated for just a moment before turning back, telling the other musketeers he would catch up and riding over towards the shop.
Upon walking in, he was greeted by a smell of books and lavender that was so strong, he was nearly knocked back by it. An old man sat behind the desk, and when Athos asked about the dragon he nodded and smiled wide. He pulled the dragon from its perch and handed it to Athos, telling him how important it was that the stuffed animal find a good, safe place to stay that was warm and dry. Athos just nodded, imagining the look in d’Artagnan’s eyes when he would hand him the dragon. Then, the man asked him to wait.
He scuttled off into the back room, and when he came back he held two boxes: a long, gold box and a square brown box. When Athos opened the gold one, he was shocked to see a beautiful pair of bracers, leather with golden designs that spiraled and swirled endlessly on the sides, perfect for Porthos. He paused before opening the other box, which ended up holding what seemed to be a small music box that played London Bridge while a small figure danced on top with a sword. Aramis would love it.
Athos was silent for a moment, dumbfounded by the objects in front of him, before he shook his head and frowned in suspicion. How had the old man known what to give him, the perfect things for his lovers back home? He was about to say something, but the old man held up his hand and shook his head, and Athos could tell that his questions would be futile. So, after a moment’s hesitation, Athos caved and bought the trinkets. He paid much less than what he believed they were worth, though he thought it was an intentional mark down by the man and not a mistake, so he didn’t comment on it. After he was back on his horse and with the musketeers, Athos allowed himself a small smile, looking forward to when he would see his partners again.
When he finally got home, the first thing he did was rush to d’Artagnan’s room where he found not just d’Artagnan, but Athos and Porthos too. His lovers tackled him with hugs, drowning him in their affection and love. d’Artagnan, however, was still too sick to leave his bed, and so expressed his happiness from where he lay. Athos pushed forward and sat by the younger man’s bed, grabbing his hand and kissing it gently. Then, he reached into his pouch and pulled out the dragon, and d’Artagnan’s eyes lit up with joy. He grabbed the stuffed dragon, expressing his thanks through weak hugs and kisses that Aramis warned might be infectious, but Athos was too tired and happy to care. Slowly he pulled away from the bed and walked to the other two, handing them their gifts and reveling in their happiness.

Lessons To Be Learned, Chapter 3
Arrived in Hangar Bay Four, Cris heard Por’thos huff incredulously beside him.
“What the fuck? They’re giving us an antique freighter?!”
“That’s not simply a freighter,” Cris corrected his friend, his eyes taking in the USS Mariposa hovering in her bay, loading ramp extended. “That’s a Kaplan F-17 with a combat upgrade!”
He could hear the surprise in his own voice. The Starfleet-white Kaplan did indeed have the familiar form of a boxy scorpion with its rectangular body and two slender side wings reaching beyond its nose. Its exterior looked a little worse for wear, a recent, blotchy paint job covering up dents and scratches, and no wonder - the speed freighter had to be several decades old. But Cris could see newer changes to the ship’s original, conservative design - additional warp nacelles, slanted, tiltable wings, a reconfigured rear docking pad and an extra set of photon torpedo launchers.
“You mean it’s not just a lame-ass shoebox?” Por’thos asked dubiously. “This rust bucket could actually be cool?”
“I think it’s pretty cool,” Cris confirmed. “And you would know if you’d paid attention in Spaceflight History. This baby may look like an old tin can, but she has a few new tricks up her sleeve.”
Mouth slightly open in nostalgic awe, Cris proceeded to walk over to the loading ramp and to Lafère who was standing there, talking to a Starfleet technician while checking items off a PADD. A pre-flight checklist, Cris assumed. A captain’s responsibility. The thought stung.
He took a deep breath. If he wanted this mission to become a success, he would have to keep his envy in check and become a teamplayer. Not easy, but he could do it.

Chapter 3/? In which there is semi-serious talk of humours, and hell is touched upon.

And friendly. But he always seems to be at odds with Athos, in subtle (or not-so-subtle) ways. In different circumstances he’d have a better chance of knowing what to do, but this is a working relationship between fighting men, one of them notoriously reticent. If only Athos wouldn’t keep making references to Classical Greek literature, leading Aramis’s ever-fertile imagination into places it should not go.

Interdit
It happens while Aramis is hunched over Porthos, stitching — or rather trying to stitch, as Porthos repeatedly flails and hisses and snatches away from Aramis’ needle — the slash across his left eye. This isn’t the injury Aramis feels he should be giving his attention to at the moment; the stab wound to his abdomen is far worse — in size and severity —  and the rag Porthos is pressing to it has long since become drenched with far too much blood for Aramis’ liking.
“Porthos, please… ” Aramis says through gritted teeth as his hand is once again slapped away from Porthos’ face. “Do you want me to poke you in the eye?” Porthos relaxes, only a bit, and lets Aramis turn his face back towards him. He presses the needle to the skin and, just as he begins to thread it through, Porthos jerks his head away with a sharp hiss. “Porthos!”
“ It hurts!” Porthos growls.
“If you wouldn’t move around so much, it wouldn’t hurt as bad!” Aramis snaps back, before letting out his own frustrations with a loud groan. He leans forward, bracing himself with his arms stiffly planted on the table.  Porthos stares up at him apologetically. Aramis sighs. He looks towards the doorway, praying that Athos will finally have returned from handling the remains of their too-effective ambush so they can tend to the stab wound, but it remains empty and Aramis’ frustrations rise again. He can’t work on such a severe injury alone, not with Porthos squirming and fighting the way he always does when being sewn up, and not with his own hands trembling the way they have been all evening since the attack.
Even if he were sure he could deliver a punch strong enough to knock the larger musketeer unconscious (the way Athos typically had to do if they were ever to get his injuries closed), there was no way he could do it himself.  Not this time.  Not after what Porthos had done. Not with Porthos lying on the table potentially bleeding out, and certainly not when it should have been him instead.
He lets out the breath he has unintentionally been holding; it comes out shaky. His eyes have been closed, so the light brush of a finger on his cheek startles him into opening them and he sees Porthos looking up at him, smiling. “‘Mis…” Porthos whispers, trailing the bloodstained finger under Aramis’ eye and catching a tear before it can fall. “Don’t cry… not for me…”
Aramis laughs softly. “You step in front of a sword for me , but I can’t cry for you?” He shakes his head and blinks.  Both cause more tears to fall down, hitting Porthos in the face, and Aramis tuts himself.  He straightens, trying to gain control of his emotions and blinking back any remaining tears as he wipes the fallen ones from Porthos’ face with a corner of his sash.
Porthos grabs his hand before he can draw it back, holding it against his cheek.
“Why?” Aramis abruptly asks, barely louder than a whisper; partly hoping Porthos didn’t hear it.
“Whaddya mean why?”
“Why did you do it?” Aramis clarifies, voice still small, and trembling about as bad as his hands. Porthos gives him a look of confusion, like he honestly can’t understand Aramis for wondering why he’d risked his own life to save him.
“Aramis…” Porthos begins, but stops when Aramis again shakes his head — violently, this time — and turns away.
“You could have died!  Could die, Porthos!” Aramis says louder. He tries to pull away, but Porthos holds tight to his hand, keeping it against his face. Aramis sighs, looking down into Porthos’ eyes, begging silently for an answer.
“If I hadn’t, then you might ’ve died. ” Porthos says softly.  His face scrunches up into a look of pain; Aramis can’t help but wonder if it’s from the injury or the thought. “How could I live with myself after that?”  He answered just after, “I couldn’t.  Not without you.”
“ You couldn’t live without me ?” Aramis’ voice breaks and he looks down at the bloody rag — which is beginning to serve no purpose since the blood is steadfastly pooling around it — then back to the door. “Dammit, where is Athos?!” He looks back and Porthos is still staring up at him, his eyes unfocused. “Porthos…”
“I reckon I just love ya too much, ‘Mis.” Porthos says, his voice sounds quieter with each word. Aramis feels his heart start pounding; he swears he can hear it in his ears. He finally unclenches the hand against Porthos’ face, and rests it gently against his skin, brushing his thumb over the stubble there.
Aramis looks down, unsure of the feelings surging through him at Porthos’ declaration; unsure if the declaration was even that or just a statement, meant in a platonic, brotherly way, and nothing more; unsure of why he suddenly begins to lean in closer until his face is centimeters from Porthos’.
Porthos’ eyes widen, not in disgust of what is clearly about to come, nor in fear, nor in anger. His eyes widen in hope, almost begging Aramis to close the gap, take the leap.
Aramis does.
