"Another Starry Night" Although human weakness is a common issue, he has the right to survive and the responsibility to save him rests with all other healthy people. Georgette Chen(1906-1993) was an essential figure in the development of modern art in Singapore. She was born in Zhejiang, China, and studied in Paris and New York. Chen lived through local and global conflicts, including the Chinese Revolutions of 1911 and 1949, and World War I and II. She settled in Singapore in 1953 where she taught at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts for nearly three decades. Georgette Chen’s influence on pop culture. In 2007, playwright Ng Yi-Sheng's musical Georgette was staged by Musical Theatre Ltd. In 2014, National Gallery Singapore published Eisner-nominated comic artist Sonny Liew's graphic novel, Warm Nights Deathless Days: The Life of Georgette Chen. Commissioned by the National Gallery Singapore, Channel NewsAsia produced a three-part docudrama, The Worlds of Georgette Chen, starring actress Rui En as Georgette Chen. On 1 November 2021, Chen would be celebrated in a Singapore and Malaysia-specific Google Doodle coinciding with the 91st anniversary of her first exhibition at the Salon d’Automne in Paris. Images on magnets, postcards, posters, etc. https://mistysworldboutique.etsy.com.⁣ ⁣ These are a couple of illustrations by a guy named Too Loose Lautrec.😯Wait, that can't be right.🤔 It sounds like a notorious French-Canadian bordello madame.😬 Oh, it's Toulouse, or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in full.⁣ ⁣ Henri, of course, was not a madame, but he did spend quite a bit of time in the brothels of Montmartre. Although he was a member of the aristocracy and the son of a comte, he was fascinated by the "urban underclass," and many of his paintings incorporated those characters.⁣🎨 ⁣ Henri was afflicted with physical deformities which he felt cut him off from his own kind, but the prostitutes accepted him as he was. In fact he often moved into brothels for weeks at a time, sharing their lives and painting them at work and at leisure. ⁣ ⁣ In 1889 the Moulin Rouge cabaret opened in Montmartre, becoming famous for its flexible dancers, both physically and morally.🙀 Two years later Henri was commissioned to create a more vibrant advertisement. He created the one shown here. ⁣ ⁣ The poster shows in the foreground, Jacques Renaudin, known as Valentin le Désossé (Boneless). Wearing a black suit and top hat, he performed difficult contortions with great fluidity and grace. He was also one of the few male dancers of the cancan. ⁣ ⁣ Behind him was Louise Weber, also shown in the other painting here. She was known as La Goulue (Glutton) because of her habit of guzzling the drinks of patrons while dancing.🥃 She was the star of the cancan and the highest paid entertainer of her day.⁣💰 ⁣ In 1902 the Moulin Rouge closed and Jacques simply disappeared.🤷🏼‍♀️ ⁣ ⁣ Louise had left earlier, in 1895, using the fortune she had made to create her own travelling show. But her fans did not follow her on the road. Her business failed and she turned to alcohol.🥃 She returned to Montmartre in 1928 as a destitute alcoholic, spending her final years selling peanuts and cigarettes on a corner near the Moulin Rouge.🥜🚬 ⁣ ⁣ Liquor had also accelerated the demise of Henri, who died of alcoholism and syphilis in 1901 at the age of 36.⁣ ⁣ Quel dommage.😔
