HELLO EVERYONE

Oh boy you know who it is my favourite boy <33 I've gone into detail about his character below the cut >:}

Reginald strikes me as an odd character since his personality is formed around insecurity; the slave of his own mind, and that of his own people.

You see, royalty is a special case in this universe. Despite the name being “medieval AU”, its more magical and foreign. The Copperbottom family is a line formed from two royal houses, and has prospered for 5 generations. What makes royalty so special is that they’re gifted in many ways.

Magic

Magic is an odd case study, since its formed, quite literally, in the blood stream. If a royal had a cut, their blood would be speckled with magic. The colour of said magic is also visible within the lower half iris on a royal’s eye, and all magic casted by a royal will be of that colour. However, royals are only hosted to one power each. These powers are special, however. They usually consist as the ability to conquer a specific object, or set of objects, out of magic. King Galeforce, for example, posses magic in the shade of green, and has the ability to create any weapon of his choosing. Prince Jullian (an OC) posses magic in the shade of pink, and has the ability to create mirrors that can reflect either the true, best, or worst version of people.

These powers are said to be a gift from the stars, and can only be matured through the greatest pleasure in life: laughter.

For most royals, this is not a problem. As babies, there is a lot to laugh about, is there not? Most royals develop magic very easily from a young age.

2. Height and Strength

Royals have more power than your average citizen. Most royals range in height from 6’2-7’. They’re usually built (and trained) to handle any kind of weaponry, with their body type usually reflecting whatever magic they happen to possess. This, perhaps, is how they were able to get themselves into power; for who could take down someone who had the strength of 10 men?

The Copperbottom has a long history of strong, powerful rulers who have never been apposed, even when facing war. Hense, what made Reginald’s life so, er, fundamental.

He was the last of the Copperbottoms to survive. His parents met a tragic fate when he was a young boy, and he is the last left. But that was the thing about it, he wasn’t a traditional royal. At his full height as an adult, he barely reached 5’1, and he had not a scrap of magic to his name. Believe me, ladies in waiting and carers for the prince when his parents passed did everything they could think of, but nothing came to light. People speculated that the passing of his parents didn’t allow his magic to develop correctly, but nobody knew. Reginald was simply a quiet child who never spoke a word.

He wasn’t like other royals, he was *different*. Terrifying, I know.

Reginald was taken under the care of Admiral Dmitri Johannes Petrov, who very much cared for the boy as his own son. Dmitri had lost his wife and son in childbirth (eyup bi-Dmitri lets gooo). The kingdom didn’t have a ruler at the moment, and since Dmitri was indeed admiral, he offered to take care of him until he was of proper age to rise to the throne.

In the current day, Reginald is 25, and very mysterious as it is. Terrence was his parent’s regent, and he accepted taking the throne in their late becomings. Terrence’s character is a whole other can of worms to get into, and I’m going to go into heavy detail of his origins in another post, but for now, Terrence remains the king as of now.

But why? Well, its half Terrence’s fault and Reginald himself. For the sake of brevity, I’ll simply talk about Reg here.

Reg is 5’1 and powerless (and a Twink). The two things that make royals, well, royal, he doesn’t have. No one *knows* why, that’s just the way he is. Reginald’s quiet, he had a stutter growing up, and he’s freckled across his face. Royals are a simple of good manners and good behaviour, and for a royal who can’t speak nor represent his family, then who even is he?

But at the same time, the castle is terrified. Reginald is the *last* of his family, and everyone who lives and serves the Copperbottom family wants to keep him safe. The walls around the castle were put In place to ensure no harm could come to the prince. Terrence is an easily swayed man, and if someone gave him a reason to tear down those walls, he would. But no one has. No one wants to risk him getting hurt.

From Reginald’s perspective, he feels unworthy of the throne. Reginald feels as though he must do everything in his power to make up for himself. He is the last of his family, and he’s a *dud*. He’s a royal that lacks anything royal looking, and so he feels eternally guilty. His unhealthy habits of drilling himself into work are of his own poison; he believes it owes it someone. He believes he had to put in more work than anyone at the castle because of the mess he has made of his family.

For if he is powerless and lacking of power, then he had to make up for it somehow, right?

Reginald does not have resentment for his upbringing; its been told to him about what he *should* have been, but he just isn't. He is a quiet fellow, but kind. Not many can form an opinion about him since he's a mystery. He's either doing work or out in his gardens where he's usually lost in thought. But in conversation, he does try his best to please crowds.

For someone who has never been outside, no one knows his face, only his name. A lot of commoners assume he is powerful, and that the castle was hiding him for his protection. Commoners are scared of him; if he is such a mystery, then he must be greatly powerful, yes?

Reginald’s character is complicated. He’s genuinely a very kind and sweet soul, but it’s very overshadowed by his crumpling self-image, but he sincerely tries to make up for it by pushing himself to the very limits. His first action of doing something for himself was making an escape from the palace, which is the beginning of the main series.

What I adore about Medieval Copperright is that Right teaches Reg that indeed has to learn to love himself. Right sees beauty in every single feature he has, and Reginald is blind to it. Right drills in the fact that Reginald doesn’t owe anyone anything for simply being himself. Their relationship is really slow, and I love that, because Reginald learns to love himself and love the things about himself through someone who views him as him. It's only when Reginald learns to care about himself that he begins to develop feelings about Right, as he can finally see himself as worth being in someone else's life.

The first person that sees Reginald as himself makes him realise that he isn’t simply an object for the throne, but as someone with a dream to be alive.

Right again is another story entirely, but I hope you’ve enjoyed this ramble !! <33

I got permission and love from @rarestdoge to show off this guy! Meet 'Overlord' Villain!Cameron Copperbottom. How he came to be, the idea of playing terraria together on master mode but as our villain characters. Realized Doge does not have a villain character and him wanting to play as his son and inspire by an abandoned construction site made this sad bastard. So Enjoy!

The Incandescent Prince AU:

Cameron Takes over after private investigator and struggles hard with being in the leadership position. Ashley and Brutus trying to help him but they too are trying to figure out there new roles as his seconds. So hence the more angry and stressed out Cameron. Eventually they prepare the space station and have the toppat king ending style fight with the government and get out. Once in space Cameron determines that a next course of action is to recuse the remaining Toppats.

Charles and Seung-Jae are assigned any mission dealing with the Toppats because of their experience with them. This leads to the heist against the wall that Cameron prepares. Upon raiding the wall Charles and Seung-Jae are alerted to the situation and are sent in. This is where it goes revenged arc vibes. The rescue team ending up in the cafeteria and having the airship on stand by. Charles and Seung-Jae having land on the helicopter pad making their way down to the Toppats Location.

The Wall and Toppats are duking it out when they arrive and the main rescue team having gotten most of the Toppat on to the air craft. A few still behind, Right Hand Man is fighting with Cameron against Dimitri when Seung-Jae charges RHM and body checks him, causing him to lose balance and fall out the building. Cameron of course goes after him not really thinking. Which is the slight scene I drew where Honeymaple catches Cameron but was unable to save RHM. This leads to him being in critical condition. The mission was a success but at what cost.

This cause Cameron to spiral slightly. Reginald due to RHMs condition does not resume leadership and consoles Cameron as much as he can in his grief. Cameron continues being leader but with a bit more venom, he disliked the government before but now he hates the government. He hates Seung-Jae for Locking his dads up and being the cause that his dad might die. Seung-Jae is consumed with guilt and is not doing too good. Ashley and Brutus try to be there for Cameron but Cameron is isolating himself. He then imposes a new mission: to make the governments lives a living nightmare.

He sets a new rule to engage in combat with all government agents and to not show mercy. He begins these heist with high risk, high reward. He wants to government to surrender for one reason to get Henry Stickmin in the most humiliating way possible and then kill him in front of the whole clan for what he has done. Ashley and Brutus are of course horrified by the plan and start trying to reason with him. Which leads to ‘you’re either with me or against me’ argument.

Eventually His plan does work out and he gets Seung-Jae but also Charles as he not about to leave Henry alone to the Toppats. Cameron is pissed even more at the fact that Charles is here and he is associated with Henry but not even his brother can reason with him. At this point the Toppat doctors and Reginald managed to locate some scientists who can help save RHM, making him into Right Hand Man Reborn.

Cameron has prepared the stage for this judgment and execution. No body is happy with this but they are not about to stop their prince yet. The judgement has been made and the execution is to be delivered. Cameron facing down Seung-Jae as Charles and his seconds are trying to convince Cameron not to do this. Seung-Jae sacred by resigned to his fate. The Toppats unable to do anything without the risk of Cameron firing before they could stop him. Right Hand Man enters the Stage. Talking down Cameron and embracing him in a hug. Letting him know it’s alright. Cameron has a mental breakdown, his stress of being leader and everything that has happen, seeing his dad there and hugging him.

He cried.

Weapons: Swords, Daggers, Axes, Hammers, Spears, Bows, Crossbows, Tooth and Claw, Fire

Strengths: All warriors are trained in combat, Vast numbers, White Walkers can only be killed by Dragonglass/Valyrian Steel/Fire, White Walkers can turn the dead into Wights, Giants are extremely hardly and can take dozens of blows before death, Dire Wolves are nearly on par with humans intelligence wise.

Weaknesses: All warriors and races are mortal in some way and can be killed accordingly, None of the seven Kingdoms hold true allegiance with each other so would see an opposite house dying as more of a bonus than a drawback, Drogon and his siblings aren’t truly tamed and when enraged Daenerys cannot control them, Because of the presence of several Dragons on the battlefield the White Walkers are under constant threat of Dragon Fire.

Weapons:Swords, Guns, Spears, fire, magic, arrows, clubs, canons, explosives, Funai, shirikens, tooth, claws, acid, elemental auras, Bare hands.

Strengths:all the warriors are trained in combat. The type Ns being cyborg nomus are rather hardy and hard to stop unless stabbed in the head or throat. The Amries have access to Rideable Horses. The shinobi have access to stun bombs and can dodges really well. The devils can regenerate and fight as long as they have blood. Treble and the dragons have near human level intelligence. Treble can change size and command wind magic while the dragons are fire proof and blade resistant. Due to the Einherjars prove themselves to each other the Forces of this kingdom will stand side by side for singular goals.

Weaknesses:All the fighters are mortal in one way or another. To even things out the Einherjars are not avaliable in this battle neither are the gods or demigods. The N-types are braindead and can not think for themselves. Treble got his name as he's prone to being a troublemaker. The dragons and Griffith are only loyal to the royal family and those they view as friends. Dragon fire and magic dosent discriminate auras usually have charge times and often only get used in situations where the fighters are at half health. The Yamamotos are crazed and have little sense of self preservation and the Uzumakis are prone to emotional outbursts if wronged. The shinsengumi are known to be aggressive battle crazed 'Wolf like Men'. Igor the youngest dragon is still a youngling. Almost the entire army are seemingly weak to Explosives.

Right Hand Man Quadrilogy (Shrek Parody) Cast

Right Hand Man 1 - “Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an stickfigure named Right Hand Man (Puffballsunited) whose precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying cartoon characters. They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil Queen Chrysalis (Kathleen Barr). Determined to save their home--not to mention his--Right Hand Man cuts a deal with Chrysalis and sets out to rescue Prince William Zeppeli (Joe Ochman) to be Chrysalis's groom. Rescuing the Prince may be small compared to his deep, dark secret.”

Right Hand Man 2 - “After returning from their honeymoon and showing home movies to their friends, Right Hand Man and Reginald Copperbottom learn that his parents have heard that he has married his true love and wish to invite him to their kingdom, called Far Far Away. The catch is: Reginald’s parents are unaware of the curse that struck their son and have assumed he married Pomegranate Cookie, not a cybenetic stickfigure with horrible hygiene and a talking autobot pal.”

Right Hand Man the Third - “When Hop Pop suddenly croaks, Right Hand Man (Puffballsunited) learns he will have to rule the land of Far, Far Away, unless he can find a suitable heir to the throne. The most-promising candidate is Reginald Copperbottom's (Puffballsunited) cousin Giorno (Phillip Reich), a teenage slacker in a medieval high-school. Right Hand Man and his trusted companions, Bumblebee (Bumper Robinson) and Samuel Rodriguez (Philip Anthony-Rodriguez), set out to bring Giorno back but find their mission is a bigger challenge than they expected.”

Right Hand Man Forever After - “Long-settled into married life and fully domesticated, Right Hand Man (Puffballsunited) begins too long for the days when he felt like a real toppat. Duped into signing a contract with devious (Poptropica) Rumpelstiltskin, he finds himself in an alternate version of Far Far Away, where Toppats are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin rules, and he and Reginald have never met. Right Hand Man must find a way out of the contract to restore his world and reclaim his true love.”

An AU of an AU? Sure why not? Amelia trusts the government after the government raid of the Project SAI complex and she's enlisted as an ace flier and given new headset things. Meanwhile, in a Toppat raid, Charles is found by a group of Toppats and given to Reginald, who has him fixed up and ready for Toppat trouble!

Note

An Au I came up with! Henry is secretly a violinist, who plays in certain shows and only comes out at night as the “Swan Prince” as he wears all white and a mask. However, when he starts out as the leader of the Toppat Clan, things take a toll on him. Leading to Reginald and Right’s suspicions. And as Ellie came along, the suspicions grew. Till one day, they found Henry in his room playing the hypnotic song of the violin, we’re their suspicions answered.

Henry was startled when he saw Reginald, Ellie and Right pepping into his room, with Henry quickly putting away his violin. Ellie and Right just thought Henry liked to play the violin and was shy about playing infront of others.

Reginald however, went full fan mode feral, referring to Henry as the illustrious Swan Prince and just asking why Henry felt the need to hide something that amazing.

Henry sat down on his bed and explained everything, how Henry had always had a love of music and loved to play the violin. But Henry was completely nervous of crowds, so he developed the Swan Prince identity so that he wouldn't be so frightened of an audience, with his mask helping him just focus on the violin and not the crowds of people that flocked to hear him.

Though life had reared its ugly head and soon Henry needed money to repair his aging violin so that he could continue to play. From there, Henry was thrown into complications after complications, before the Toppats finally got to space and Henry could afford to repair his violin.

Henry lets the three of them know that he is grateful for the clan and happy to be their leader, it is just that he missed playing the violin and found it more soothing to play in secret.

And so the Swan Prince found himself playing his songs again, in the starry setting of space and among those that cared about him. He even found himself in duets with the ever regal Crow King, Reginald getting to live out a fantasy with someone who loved the violin as much as he did.

FUNNY DARK ROYAL LORE 🌟!!!

Randy Radman in their regular attire! They are a criminal that frequently sneaks into royal Balls. He owns a housing type place, where most of the residents are criminals in one way or another. Right is one of the residents there.

Randy's a scheming old dude and they like to rope a poor, unwilling Right into their plans.

Randy runs all sorts of shady biz! One of them being fake brands and clothing. He somehow got their hands on some real branded clothing though. Using those, and making other clothing pieces on his own, He and Right sneak into the Copperbottom Masquerade Ball.

Dark Royal Copperight! At the Copperbottom Masquerade Ball, a duo of a theif and a con woman managed to work their way in and cause chaos! Right was there too and helped protect the prince. Cue Reginald thinking about the hot mystery man.

"Actually, it's the Galetrov kingdom that has a garden. Prince Hubert and King Dearil grew it together. Though, King Right and King Reginald have a lovely pond area that does have some plants. It's a beautiful spot." Drogo corrected and smiled warmly. He clasped his hands behind his back and tapped his foot idly.

"I think she'd like to." King responded with a small nod and smiled.

The days ticked by, at a rate humans can't understand, all they know is that it's slow. But compared to the time other days tick by as, it is short, which no one can seem to get a grasp on. As the sun was ticking down, a group of four individuals, all connected by a large, officially interspatial, crime group, slowly walked up the large mountain, praying the days had ticked at a satisfactory rate, for them to reach the location of their desire.

"So I was thinking...to spice things up a bit-" the oddly bobbing ghost started, before being cut off by their white-haired companion.

"For the last time, I'm happy with how everything is going. Now shut up!"

"Henry, you don't need to be so rude, I was just asking if you wanted to set up camp since sleeping beauty can't walk by himself anymore" Ellie chimed in.

"Uh, shucks, sorry Elles, I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to...a figment of my imagination, camp sounds great, we could use some rest!" Henry said apologetically, glancing at the air next to him when he said 'imagination'. Ellie chuckled and nodded as she spun around, somehow still walking, to speak up.

"Hear that boss? Someone actually agrees saying that we should rest!" She mocked as Right Hand Man's expression went from his usual scowl to a sour and bitter frown.

"I'm jus' saying! We're already close! It's not 'at further!" He barked back, still dragging his feet behind as he carried a half asleep Reginald on his back.

"Tell that to princess sleepy head!" The red-headed woman laughed in return. Roughly 18 minutes ago, Reginald was in a state of nearly passing out from exhaustion so his right hand man logically thought to carry him until reaching the cave they were meant to go to was impossible in that day's time frame. The unfortunate part was that their two underlings kept teasing Right's actions as though they are similar to what prince charming would do in fairy tales. But Right was not taking any of that bullshit, what he was doing was completely normal between two friends.

“Right...we’re all tired, just put me down and let’s set up camp” Reginald tiredly chimed in. Right sighed and gave a low "fine…" before setting down the brunette. After taking a moment to regain his footing, Reginald stretched his arms before promptly asking, "So where shall we set up?"

"I think we should look for some sort of open area and just lay down some….." Henry began before cutting himself off.

"What? What's wrong?" Ellie asked before Henry stopped her from going any further.

"Do you hear that?" Everyone froze, listening closely to what sounded like talking. It seemed like it was coming from just a bit further up the mountain, where the group was aiming to get to.

"Permission to look ahead and potentially dispose of threats?" The ghost chimed in with a non-existent grin.

"Let's all go ahead together, stay close, and stay alert" Henry quietly told the others, ignoring the ghost's request. The group moved forward slowly, careful to not alert the people ahead.

The surface was great, the sun was shining, the birds were singing, flowers were blooming, and on days like these, kids aged around 10 would be playing outside in the garden or at a friend's house, but frisk was not like other kids, while other kids were playing cops and robbers, frisk was saving monster society. It hadn't even been 20 minutes when the ambassador came across their first issue,

Where would the monsters stay before they could join the humans in towns and cities?

The idea that first came to mind was that until a place was established to be available for monsters, they would remain underground. It wasn't the best idea, but it was better than just letting them fend for themselves on the surface, plus, it would only be worse when other humans got involved. For now, the main issue was dealing with lodging for their friends that came with them in the first place.

And that is what they were doing. Right now the young child was sitting in front of the underground's exit, talking with Asgore, the king of the underground, and Dr. Alphys, the head royal scientist. They were mainly discussing how to proceed with getting the monsters a way to live with humans, with alphys there to bring in human facts that she knew (mainly from anime) on how they would react to such sudden actions. It seemed to be going…. neutral, no good ideas, and no bad truths. But logically, the lovely sunset ahead was rushing the discussion into being about setting up some sort of camp, which they neither had the materials for, nor the means to get some. It would be difficult to go back down to get supplies while having a logical enough excuse for others on why going to the surface is going to take longer. Regardless, those of Frisk’s new friends who had seen the surface would probably be against the idea of going underground again for a presumably long while, since it was at this point obvious that getting the monsters their own place on the surface would take months and months.

“Dang, only a miracle could be able to fix this, and what’s worse is the town of ebott is known for being a super anti-monster.” Chara stated while hovering next to Frisk. Frisk thought for a moment, a miracle could happen. Frisk knew it, something would happen. They were DETERMINED.

File Saved.

“Y’know, that’s not always gonna work Frisk, it was cute the first time, but now it’s-” Chara started, but as if on queue, there was the sound of something slipping on rock, a yelp, and a few loose rocks dropping down the mountain. Frisk, Chara, Asgore and Alphys immediately turned around to see 4 people, all with shocked and scared expressions on their faces.

“N-no way...it can’t be” Ellie said, staring in awe at the group. “I thought it was just legends, stories to scare kids who don’t behave…..”

“Ellie? What do you mean? Do you know something?” Henry asked, pulling his gaze away and towards his friend. She sighed and lowered her head.

“It’s long to explain but… I used to live in this town and there was a legend about monsters living under the mountain, I never knew it was real.” She explained.

“Well, it seems you all don’t mind that much.” Asgore chuckled.

“Don’t get used to it Mr. Asgore, not all humans act friendly at first.” Frisk chimed in.

“Eh, you all don’t seem like a threat, I don’t mind bein’ hospitable” Right Hand Man casually mentioned. This statement led to Henry and Ellie sarcastically gasping and giggling as they knew that Right was never the ‘hospitable’ type.

“Neither do I, I am Asgore the king of the monsters, and this is our ambassador, Frisk” Asgore said, gesturing to the young child. “And this is our royal scientist, Alphys.” Alphys gave a nervous wave.

“Pleasure to meet you, your highness. I am Reginald Copperbottom, leader of the Toppat clan. These are my employees, my Right Hand Man, Ellie Rose and Henry Stickmin.” Reginald introduced while bowing slightly (As a way of respect? Henry was puzzled by this, but the chief always had a tendency to be dramatic, so he shrugged it off).

“Please Mr. Copperbottom, no need to be so formal, I understand the title is grand but it doesn’t suit me.” Asgore said with a soft voice.

“Of course, apologies, I normally default to being proper with new people.” Reginald corrected himself.

“It’s no issue, it’s very welcoming to see such wonderful humans, even after my past opinions.”

While the two leaders were busy discussing formality, Henry took it upon himself to chat with the ambassador. He walked over and sat down next to Frisk giving a calm smile before seeing a red glow behind the child. He looked and saw a ghost, a child whose appearance was similar to Frisk’s, with a few changes.

“Who’s that?” He asked, directing his gaze at the idling bobbing ghost, who was only paying attention once Henry pointed them out.

“You...can see them?” Frisk asked, shocked as no one else had been able to hear or see them.

“Yeah? Wait...did they die and through strong determination they’re now stuck to you?” Henry asked.

“Yeah! I was dead until I met Frisk!” Chara responded. Frisk nodded frantically, showing off their red soul. “How did you know this?!”

“I’m in a similar boat myself” Henry responded, slowing his words. Out of the corner of his eye he saw his own ghostly companion fluttering about like mad, shouting silently with their non-existent mouth. Henry stood up and walked to where the ghost was dramatically pointing at, only to be greeted by three familiar figures, dressed in their military best. They hadn’t noticed him, thank god, but this was still bad. His throat grew tight as it normally did under stress, he figured it was best in multiple cases to just sign. He picked up a rock and threw it at Reginald which hit the brunette with slight force. The chief turned around to see Henry frantically signing and gesturing around the curve that the group had originally taken. It took a minute but, after a few loops of the same signs he recognised, they were in danger.

“Ellie, Right, Henry is calling a code green, get your weapons drawn and stay quiet. Henry, I’m trusting you to keep the king, ambassador and doctor safe. Got it?” Reginald commanded in a whisper shout, pulling out the revolver he kept under his hats. The three nodded in response, each pulling out their own weapon, with Henry also rushing their new friends into the cave for cover. With a few skids of rocks from the government soldiers rounding the corner, it had begun, the fight that would set where the ending would start. The government may have had strong JUSTICE, KINDNESS and BRAVERY. The toppats would fight their hardest with the PATIENCE, PERSEVERANCE and DETERMINATION they had.

Mr. Williams sat there, staring at his mirror. He brushed his soft hand over the blue gems, chipped and shattered, yet still retaining their natural beauty. He smiled softly as he pulled his dark chocolate hair back into its usual ponytail before placing the mirror back on its wall. Walking over to the door, he smiled, he could tell from the graying clouds crossing past the mountain it was going to rain. He liked the rain, always so peaceful for a nice book and a cup of tea. He was in an earl grey mood, but he was also tempted to have some coffee.

It seemed easy enough, the toppats had been practising soul magic for a while at this point, and they had the advantage in numbers. But, the government came prepared with better weapons, especially made with intent on doing damage to souls. That fight had been going on for about 15 minutes at this point with neither side taking major damage. At this point something in the fight needed to change or it would be a will of who gave up first. The government’s side had a secret advantage that was making things easier for them, and that was Charles Calvin, a KINDNESS soul who has rather low level healing magic, but healing magic non the same. That was what was making things so difficult, until Ellie used her own magic and COORDINATED a plan.

“Aim for Calvin, right on the top of his headphones, that’ll distract Galeforce and the other one and I’ll get a clean shot” She whispered to Reginald, as both were ducked behind a rock that had fallen during the chaos. Her boss nodded and sat up aiming for the center of Charles’s headphone, perched exactly above his blonde hair. It felt like time was slowed, as he pulled the trigger, sending a bullet speeding ahead, grazing the red artificial leather on top. As the bullet raced by it grabbed the attention of the three soldiers, as well as Right Hand Man, distracting them long enough so Ellie could make her move. She pulled out her own gun and shot at Rupert, managing to hit him just below the liver a few times. He let out a loud yelp as he fell over and clutched his side. With a sorrowful expression the general declared,

“You won’t get away with it next time!” He shouted as he picked up his subordinate. Ellie and Reginald rose from their spots and walked forward, watching in a sort of victory as the pilot helped the general pick up their wounded comrade.

“Hell yeah we will! You’re just lucky you chose to run!” Ellie cheerfully yelled out in response to the general’s statement.

“Still don’ see why we have to spare ‘em. Would’ve been more beneficial to just end ‘em.” Right Hand Man mentioned to Reginald. “Seriously, we’re jus’ gettin ourselves into a bigger mess, an them bastards aren’t worth pissin on to put out fire on ‘em.”

“Righty, it’s only fair that we spare them, none of us got hurt.” Reginald spoke in response. Rupert turned his head to stare at the criminal brunette, who dared to pity them after nearly shooting one of their best pilots. With what little strength he could, he gripped his pistol, and raised his arm.

“That’s…..what you thought...asshole,”

Rubies and Sapphires: The Ruby Heart

Chapter 1: Fox Tails

The ornate white castle in the center of the bustling village was like a beacon to her as she walked through the front gate and flashed her identification to the armoured guards standing out front.

She flicked her hair, long orange tresses tied back in a loose ponytail via a blue ribbon and looked up the clocktower within sight of the town square, adjusting her spectacles to counter the harsh glare of the midday sun.

A breeze fluttered her long white robe as she strolled down the bricked road towards the middle of town. The buildings were as white and pristine as the castle, with shopfronts that had colourful signs, houses with beautiful and intricate stained-glass windows caught the eye, and flowers of every kind and colour imaginable growing in neat little flowerbeds lining the street.

As she grew closer to the center of town, the noise of the open market grew in volume, drowning the rhythmic beat of her footsteps, and a prelude to the work that lay ahead of her. Not that she minded of course, as much as the bright sunlight, colourful garments and noise was a welcome sight after spending so long on the road, it was already an annoyance to the normally reclusive woman.

She could already feel a headache rapidly taking a hold of her right temple as she ducked into the nearest tavern.

The building, lit by orbs of mage light that floated near the ceiling, all dark wood and invitingly quiet, was a welcome respite. There was a bar at the far end of the room. Behind it lay a staircase that led to the upper floor of the building.

She took a seat at one of the empty tables dotted around the room and pulled out a piece of parchment from her robes. It was a flyer advertising the ruler of this region would open sections of his home to the public to host a ball.

She smirked.

She knew full well the ruler in question, Lord Galeforce, had been having trouble with an ancient order of mages that stole magical artefacts, and this ball was his attempt to catch them red-handed by having the Star Sapphire and Radiant Ruby on display for the event, two of the realms most valued magical jewels.

She stowed the flyer away and called a barmaid over to order some roast beast. As she waited, she heard a couple of people take the empty table behind her.

"Terrence is gettin’ ballsy, gunnin’ after Gale.” One man said gruffly, in a Terralian accent.

His partner sighed, replying wearily. “I’ve tried talking to him, he wants those jewels even if it kills us.”

The gruff man snorted “Yeah, us, not him… You should jus’ let me put an arrow in his head Reg.”

“Absolutely not!” Reg said, a little too loudly.

“All I’m sayin’ is it’ll be nice an’ quick, no one will miss him.”

“And who will lead the clan?”

“You could.”

“Me?” Reg squeaked. “Don’t be ridiculous Wright…”

“You got the brains for it.”

“And nothing else.” Reg replied sourly. “I’m not strong like Terrence is, the moment I try to take control I’ll be thrown out of the fortress.”

Wright hummed. “Alrigh’ then, you be the King, I’ll be yer Champion.”

“Wright… I appreciate the sentiment, but now isn’t the best time, nor place to discuss this.” Reg sighed.

“Fair point,” Wright conceded, and the conversation changed topic. “Looking forward to seeing the ruby tonight?”

“Of course, it has been quite some time since I last laid eyes on it.”

Her eavesdropping was interrupted by the arrival of her food. The sight of freshly cooked meat made her mouth water as she tore into her meal.

She paused as the sound of her robes shuffling. With a calm breath and her fork sticking out of her mouth, she forced her tail, concealed beneath her clothing, to stop moving.

The two men behind her continued a far more mundane conversation as she ate, ordering drinks for themselves, and by the time she had scarfed down the last shreds of meat, half an hour later, they had paid their tab and left.

I’d better be careful tonight, don’t want to step on their toes. She thought as she asked for directions to nearest inn.

Hours later and she was walking into the lavish ballroom, a long flowing blue robe draped across her form, and wearing white slippers that muffled the sound of her footsteps against the polished floor. Her true self concealed under a mountain of wards tightly coiled around her body, unseen to the untrained eye of the average person.

The room was massive, with the same white walls as the rest of the castle, long wooden tables laden with food were placed at the edges of the room as a live orchestra played music quietly on a raised dais near the back of the room.

In the middle of the ballroom, held in a glass display cases, were a pair of jewels. She walked over to them, mindful of the soldiers in dress uniform that stood guard on either side.

Resting on a velvet cushion was a ruby as red as blood. It gave off its own light, pulsing crimson in a steady rhythm. And while that glow had initially got her attention, it was what lay beside it that truly drew her eye.

The four-point sapphire, flecked with white dots, looks as if the night sky had been taken and compressed into a jewel. She felt as if she could stare at it forever, that it held the secrets of the universe.

“Beautiful, aren’t they?” A voice asked.

She startled, snapping around on her heel to see a man in his late twenties with a curled brown moustache and dressed in an elegant black suit and red bowtie.

His red eyes twinkled in amusement as she righted herself. “I didn’t mean to give you a scare, I was merely commenting on the rare sight his Lordship has graced us with this night.”

She recognized the voice, one of the men from the bar. She shrugged. “It’s fine, happens enough as it is with a bung eye an’ all.” She said, gesturing at her left eye, unfocused, and half closed.

“Terralian?” he asked, and she nodded. “A bit far from home, aren’t you?”

“I do a lot of travelling,” She answered, turned to face him, and paused. “You know, not many people can pin down my accent, most folks I’ve met think Terralia is a myth…”

He chuckled. “As good as the academy’s are, world history isn’t a mandatory subject outside of the diplomacy courses,” he held out a gloved hand. “Reginald Copperbottom, Noble of the House of Crimson Scales.”

Now that was a title that gave her pause. “The Dragon Slayers?”

“The very same,” he confirmed. “And you?”

"Lucina Grey of the Elder Grove Alliance,” She said, the alias falling easily off her tongue as they shook hands. As an afterthought she added. “Illusion specialist.”

Reginald politely offered his arm, an invitation to take the discussion elsewhere. She however, breezed past him and motioned for him to follow as she led them over to an empty table out on the rather spacious balcony.

“Not one for polite conversation I take it?” he asked, once more amused by her antics.

She gave him a flat look, one that matched the tone of her voice as they sat down. “I don’t exactly ascribe to the notion I have to act a certain way just because others expect it of me. My respect should suffice, shouldn’t it?”

“Indeed, it should,” he agreed and leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table and clasped his hands together. “Are you familiar with legends around those gems?”

“Aside from the fact the Star Sapphire is said to grant wishes, not really,” She admitted, leaning back in her chair. “Why, you know a few tales?”

“I’m well versed in the subject,” he answered proudly. “For example, the Radiant Ruby was said to have been the heart of one of the Dragon Princes of old, supposedly the Prince of Honor.”

“I know a fair bit about dragons,” she said. “If that ruby is a dragon heart, that means the dragon’s still out there.”

“Dragons don’t die,” she added, and Reginald nodded. “They hide until they can retrieve their heart. ‘Course, most never do, so they make do, and live their lives as best they can.”

Reginald’s eyebrow flew up into his hair. “It almost sounds like you’ve met some.”

“I travel,” She offered by way of explanation. “I’ve met a few, nice people.”

He smirked. “I daresay very few people are as accepting as you,” his smile became something sly. “Why don’t we cut to the chase, hm? Which jewel are you after? Cadmean.”

The silence offered by the balcony was suddenly deafening.

“Ah… Right, okay…” she said as he relished her floundering. “How?”

“Your eyes,” he answered coolly. “As slippery as you are Lady Cadmean, there is one trait that always matches your disguises, the blindness in your left eye. You cannot hide a deformity like that… I’m surprised the guards haven’t caught on.”

She stiffened, sitting rigid in her seat, as she waited to see what he would do and ready to flee.

Panic. Raw, jarring panic set her on alert. “You can see through my wards,” She said evenly, sounding far calmer than she felt. Resigned, she replied. “The Star Sapphire. I’m here for the sapphire.”

Some tension left the man’s shoulders, he leaned back in his seat, and rested his hands in his lap. “Good…”

He sounded relieved. Something wasn’t adding up, he clearly was here to cause trouble of some sort yet appeared to be concerned about the actions of a mere thief.

“Why?” she asked once the initial shock wore off. “Why do you care anyway?”

“Because I’m here for the ruby,” he explained. “And if I am to see the sunrise tomorrow, I need to get that ruby.”

A frown adorned her face. “Is someone threatenin’ you?”

“Ah, no no, nothing of the sort!” Reginald hastily denied, slowly wilting under her firm gaze. “…Yes, unfortunately.”

“My liege wants both jewels before the night is over, or else my friend and I are out on the streets... or dead, whichever happens first.” He explained.

“You got a plan?”

He blinked. “You want to help?”

“We’re after the same thing yeah? If your boss wants both, I can just find something else for my collection…” she trailed off at the stunned look of wonderment on his face. “What?”

He beamed. “You have no idea how long it’s been since I last met someone so… blasé, it’s frankly quite amazing.”

She shrugged. “If you say so.”

He cleared his throat. “Now then, here’s what I’ve managed to put together…”

Sometime later they returned to the ballroom, she took her position leaning up against the wall with the gemstones in full view. She watched Reginald walk over to man with a bushy orange moustache and green eyes, quietly converse with him for a moment, and gestured at her.

She gave the men a polite nod.

She moved away from the wall as the other two parted ways, and with a discrete signal from Reginald, it began.

Smoke bombs hidden on the ceiling, detonated, raining black, glittering smoke onto the guests. The familiar sound of people screaming and running in terror filled her ears as she expertly weaved through the crowd.

The din of panicked people was quickly drowned out by the thunderous noise of countless guards storming the room.

“Surround the gems! I want those Toppats caught!” a voice barked, Lord Galeforce, she assumed.

She made it to the glass case just as the smoke cleared. She pressed a fingertip on against the glass, a thin blade of magic materializing around the digit and cleanly slicing through the glass.

With one fluid motion, she had cut a hole in the case. Grabbing the two jewels, she froze as the clattering of guards stopped just behind her and the sharp ends of several spears were pressed into her back.

“Well, well, we were hoping for a Toppat, but to catch the infamous Cadmean Vixen instead? Looks like your luck just ran out.”

She smirked.

“Not this time.” She said calmly as she wreathed herself in magic, blinding the gathered soldiers in the flash of light it created, and using the confusion to head to the balcony.

Once outside, her form shifted, her body blurring, clothes disappeared into grey wisps of magic as a rather large fox stood where the woman had once been. She glanced back to see the guards scrambling to find her and leapt up onto the balcony railing.

With a leap she jumped up onto the windowsill below her and with practiced ease, scaled her way down the exterior of the castle. In minutes she was hiding in a bush, scanning the fleeing crowd that poured out of the Castle gate for any sign of her cohorts.

There.

She spotted them leaving, none the worse for wear, and she stuck to bushes, alleys, and the darkness of side streets as she tailed them to the rendezvous point outside of the town walls.

They stopped by a river, near a boat tied to a rock by the riverbank. She shifted back onto her human form and walked over to them. As soon as she did, she had the business end of a sword in her face. It was the man she had seen Reginald talking to earlier.

“You ‘ave them?” he asked.

She pulled the ruby and the sapphire out of her robe and held them out to him. Reginald sidled up to the other male, eyes locked onto the ruby.

“Finally… after all these years…” he murmured, picking up the ruby delicately as his companion grabbed the sapphire and prodded the woman with the tip of his blade.

“You’re coming with us.” He stated as Reginald got into the boat, the Radiant Ruby clasped tight in his gloved hands.

For her part, she shrugged and clambered into the small watercraft.

“Wright, show her some respect, she’s risked quite a lot by working with the likes of us.” Reginald stated, voice authoritative.

“I’ll show her some respect when we’re sure she won’t turn tail on us.” Wright scoffed as he joined them in the boat and cut the rope tying the vessel to shore. A blast of fire magic from Reginald burned the remains of the rope to ash and hid any trace of their getaway.

She remained unfazed despite the accusation; it wasn’t anything new in her line of work.

“So, now what?” she asked Reginald.

He grinned at her, mischief dancing in his eyes. “I’ll introduce you to our leader, The Toppat King, and have you join our ranks. You have the talent for it.”

“Reg.” Wright warned.

“She could have taken the gems and ran off to who knows where, and yet she honored our agreement,” Reginald pointed out as they left the town behind them. “The Cadmean Vixen is wanted in three kingdoms for vigilantism, theft, and unlawful release of slaves.”

“S’not your call though, it’s up to the King.” Wright said and a shadow passed overhead.

“I’m aware,” Reginald replied and looked over at the woman. “If you’re not accepted, be ready to run.”

“Nothing new there then.” She commented as she looked at the massive red fortress that loomed overhead and the pair of ropes that had been thrown down for them.

She offered Reginald a small smile. “Thanks for trusting me though, been a while since I’ve had that luxury.”

“Of course, Er, what is your name?” he asked as they started climbing, Wright bringing up the rear.

“I don’t have one,” she replied and elaborated at his confusion. “I got kicked out of my pack, a Furhide with no pack is a Furhide with no name. Most people just call me Red.”

“It’s very nice to meet you Red, hopefully Terrence shares the sentiment.”

“Yeah.” She replied.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
