New Video: Joel Grey and Eddie Redmayne Talk CABARET and The 'Emcee' Legacy

Last night, the company and audience of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club celebrated Broadway legend Joel Grey’s 92nd birthday on stage at the August Wilson Theatre.

Last night, the company of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club wilkommened some very special guests to their immersive nightclub home!

Eddie Redmayne currently in previews as the ‘Emcee’ in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club celebrated Broadway legend Joel Grey’s 92nd birthday on stage at the August Wilson Theatre.

In the video Grey, who won Tony and Academy Awards for originating the role of the Emcee, reacts to the immersive new production now in previews on Broadway and its star Eddie Redmayne.

Redmayne described the feeling of performing for Grey and the show's composer, John Kander as "extraordinary, horrendously intimidating, as well, but joyful," and revealed a special moment he shared with the star during the performance.

Grey, who originated the role of the ‘Emcee’ on Broadway in 1966 and went on to star in the beloved film of Cabaret, took the stage as the entire cast, band, and creative team sang “Happy Birthday” while a custom cake, shaped like a giant pineapple, emerged from the stage.

During his speech honoring Grey, Eddie Redmayne said, “Tonight is an extraordinarily special night for us because we are in the presence of an extraordinary human being without whom none of us would be here.” After thunderous applause, Redmayne continued “Your performance in this part changed my life and it was one of the things that made me want to be an actor.”

The cast and Grey were also joined on stage by Cabaret composer John Kander.

Alongside Joel’s daughter Jennifer Grey and Kander, a star-studded crowd came out to fete the theater icon including Anderson Cooper, Candice Bergen, Jackie Hoffman, Jane Krakowski, Lin-Manuel Miranda, David Rockwell, and more. They were joined by numerous alum of Cabaret spanning the decades including Maude Apatow (Sally Bowles in London, 2023), Madeline Brewer (Sally Bowles in London, 2022), Joely Fisher (Sally Bowles on Broadway, 2000), Gina Gershon (Sally Bowles on Broadway, 2001), Mason Alexander Park (Emcee in London, 2023), Adam Pascal (Emcee on Broadway, 2003), Molly Ringwald (Sally Bowles on Broadway, 2002), Jake Shears (Emcee in London, 2023), and Brooke Shields (Sally Bowles on Broadway, 2001).

Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club is now in previews on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre (245 West 52nd Street). It has been a year since Season 4 of Stranger Things had graced your TV screen. After ugly crying over that devastating death of Eddie Munson in the last episode, you found yourself even more fascinated and captivated with that world and him. 

For Halloween 2022, you rocked your Hellfire shirt and joined your friends as makeshift versions of the Stranger Things gang. Your friends did nothing to stop your obsession, giving you small bracelets and pins for your birthday. 

“What’s your take on this one?” your friend said, showing you her phone screen with the latest theory on how season 5 might continue. 

“Vampire Eddie?” you laughed and blushed slightly, “I’d let him have me.” 

“Y/n!” they squealed, nudging your shoulder slightly. “It’s rather cool though, can you imagine? He’d be the second blood sucking Edward you’ve ever loved!” 

It was natural for them to make fun of your first movie crush, you had been so young when Twilight came out, but it seems as though some things never change. 

“Yeah... yeah.. laugh all you want.” You muttered, your eyes darting back to the inked pages of your book. “I have no shame in loving fictional men, they’re better than the real thing.” 

You remembered your attempts at normal teenage romances, most of the boys you dated often turning out to be disgusting pigs or unbearable to be around. It almost made it even more heartbreaking to know that you’d most likely never meet anyone with the same charm, passion and respect as the fictional men in your heart. 

At the ripe of age of 19, you were the last one in your group to never had a proper boyfriend, to never have that desire or passion of needing to be close to someone. You were constantly wrapped up in all your fantasy shows, books and imaginations. 

“Oh fuck, its 1am! I’ve gotta head off, see you next weekend yeah?” they said, grabbing their things and heading out of the room slowly. 

“I can’t do next weekend, got a job interview at that book store.” You replied, your face falling a bit. Ever since school ended, it has been getting harder and harder to see each other and stay as close as you used to. 

“Are you serious?! This is the fourth time you’ve had to cancel on me lately.” 

“I know, I know! It’s just so hard to find times, between college classes starting soon and trying to get some work-”

“Save it. I’ll see if Rebecca would wanna come instead.” they huffed, avoiding your eye. “I’ll see you around, text me whenever you’re free.” 

You said your goodbyes and were left alone in the silence of your small apartment. You looked fondly at the few pictures frames scattered on your bookshelf, missing the days of having a tight nit group. From 6 of you, it’s slowly died down to just the two of you. 

You sat quietly on your bed, trying to not let your emotions get the best of you. You turned on the TV and let the bright lights flicker around the room. You let Netflix play on random, continuing the end of Season 3 of Stranger Things. You knew that you would fall asleep, but hearing the voices of the characters gave you a small sense of comfort. 

The night air was unnaturally cold as you slept, causing you to shiver and pull the blanket above you as you stayed cocooned on the couch. Your whole body started to sweat, the air almost thick and slicing down your throat. 

You shifted slightly, feeling suddenly uncomfortable with the couch underneath you feeling almost as hard as stone. You opened your eyes and instantly panicked, your room gone and replaced with rocks, leafs and trees. 

“Did I fucking sleep walk?” you mutter to yourself. Your eyes trying to see between the trees, the soft glow of the sunrise giving you more colour to your surroundings. 

You followed the path, hearing slightly more commotion and cars speeding past. A small milk bar was near by and you walked in instantly, everything was oddly familiar but outdated. 

“May I help you miss?” the shopkeeper asked, he looked you up and down with a raised brow. You had fallen asleep in your clothes from the day before, not really understanding why that made him eye you down. Him on the other hand, had the highest, thickest and curliest set of hair that radiated the smell of hairspray from a mile away. 

“Um, am I able to use your bathroom?” you asked. He nodded his head to the right, giving you the approval. Walking slightly you noticed the so called store phone. “Oh no way, is this some sort of joke?” you laughed.

The man just stared at you, “What’d you mean sweetheart?” 

“It’s a fucking dial up phone! Oh my god, its still ringing! That’s sick as.” 

“I wasn’t aware there were any other types of phones, darlin’.” 

Your eyes widened, suddenly taking in all of your surroundings. Your chest became heavy, “Do you.... do you have today’s paper?” you whisper on a whim. 

“Here you are.” The thick news paper slapped down in front of you on the counter. “21st February, 1986″.

23 things for 2023

1. buy 1 horse

Done!! Bought Luna!!!

2. Knit a pair of socks

I knit a sock, that I finished today. But I mostly decided I wanted to knit other things instead so this is fine

3. Three camping trips

went to mt of the holy cross, and New Mexico for two camping nights, plus a day hike in winter park. So technically no but pretty close!

4. Plant four pumpkins

…..no. I bought seeds and did nothing and I don’t feel that bad about it

5. Handstand (five fingers) press

Lol no. Did nothing for it. Never made a plan and so did not achieve

6. Kill side yard weeds (because weeds are the devil 666)

Success? I paid a Gardner to pull them all so yes! Feels like a failure because I didn’t really deal with them or the yard in general, but they are all gone now.

7. Go to Loyola social justice meeting (7th heaven)

I went to a meeting! And baked cookies for an event. (And then never went back oops)

8. Mail 8 letters to mates - birthday cards probably

Success! (Rebecca birthday, Sarah birthday, Clare get well card, Callie birthday, Alison birthday, clare birthday, Callie wedding, clare kt recipe card)

9. Research 9 hours of getting a cat (9 lives)

Decided a horse was enough so stopped researching 🤷‍♀️[ read complete guide to adopting a cat 3 hours]

10. Do ten full pull ups

Total yes, in a row like intended absolutely not. I can do like 2.5 in a row. Made haphazard progress, but now I have a pull up bar so hoping for better next year!

11. Buy 11 things off of my to buy eventually list

Success! This was easy and I did it! (air fryer, air mattress, nice soap dispensers, office mat, thermometer, fire extinguisher, white tank top, little plates, shower cleaner, plastic drain pipes, sheet pan organizer, bonus: back door light bulb, rainbow flag and holder, more bras)

12. Go on 12 dates

Success! I thought this would be really hard but then I just got my boyfriend by like February and it ended up being the easiest ny resolution ever. He even asked me out to start.

13. Run a half marathon 13.1 miles

Success! (Okay this was a gimme because I signed up for it and had a training plan in 2022 but still)

14. Hike a fourteener

Success! mt of the holy cross and it was terrifying and very long but we did it!

15. Read 30 (15x2) books

I read 27 and have three in various states of completion. I kind of wanted to power this one thru but it wouldn’t have been fun and then what’s the point. This one is hard because I abandoned so so many books this year. Like I made it at least one chapter into like 40 and a couple half way thru. So close but no cigar but I refuse to read things that aren’t fun just to hit a goal so I feel fine about it.

16. Host 8 things

Hosted 3, organized a couple others so partial credit. I would like to do better in the future. ( galentines, whimsy brunch, birthday, organized brunch at watercourse, organized lake day)

17. Go out dancing (must be more dancing than drinking, dance class counts.)(dancing queen only 17)

Nope. But also that’s fine.

18. Upgrade phone and deal with all photos. Upload belize to fb and save others. Data management

Mostly. I got an external storage for Christmas so I can finish when I get home. So solid partial credit. (uploaded some. Upgraded phone plus new battery, still need to get data off of it) [email protected] [email protected]

19. General contractor for house cracks plus install air conditioner

Success. Installed ac. Got the cracks looked at once and they were fine and then they got worse and now I’m getting foundation work done. So success I guess.

21. Go to frisbee Masters regionals

Success! Another bit of gimme but we went and qualified to nationals!)

22. Buy purple navel jewelry (I’m feeling 22)

Success! (And I love it)

23. volunteer for 23 hours

No and I feel bad about it. I need to find something to volunteer with. I feel like I should have the time/be able to make time but it also feels like I never have time and also never want to. But I think it’s important.

So overall full success on 11 of the goals, happy partial on 5, annoyed partial on 2, abandoned 4 and failed my last one and feel bad about it.

But overall pretty good success!

So we thought the Construction Head’s name was Ulrich based on his username from this deleted storyboard for Any Sport in a Storm, until Dana clarified it was Mason. And we know the coven heads have gone through name changes in development (Graye Vernworth to Adrian Graye), but consider!

There’s an M right after Ulrich, which could be like Ulrich M., an allusion to his surname! Adrian Graye is usually referred to as Graye for short, by his surname; And I wouldn’t be surprised if the crew mostly referred to the Construction Head by HIS last name instead of the first, AKA Mason! In other words, it’s totally feasible that his full name is Ulrich Mason, and both takes are correct!

This would leave Vitimir and Osran as the only coven heads without last names, if “the Huntsman” counts for Eberwolf, which I presume it does because Rebecca Rose made the point to include that title in a listing of the coven heads’ names.

Additionally, the numbers after his surname might allude to his birthday; The Boiling Isles equivalent of December 8th, 1990, or January 28th, 1990! Given the show takes place on 2022, this would make Mason 32 by this logic, which doesn’t seem quite right; But maybe he ages differently, or his hair is naturally gray and not from age. He does call himself a proud pops, so maybe he doesn’t have grandchildren; Or the birthday is in reference to his kid’s! The human calendar is likely different from the demon one too, but then again the Deadwardian Era seems to match the Edwardian’s, and there’s an in-universe reason for Philip to change the dating system to his own!

Side note: I have to wonder if Mason’s Penstagram was removed from the final episode, because the shortening meant they couldn’t fit in his character’s formal introduction, and didn’t want to tease the implication and dynamic of him having kids, only to never follow up on that.

In the same episode, the only coven heads who acknowledge Hunter are the only ones who get actual names and roles on-screen; Which probably explains why Adrian was animated to have his eyes look back at Hunter on his own, when the rest were otherwise static... It was foreshadowing his role as the next and last Coven Head to be given a proper debut. He’s the only one in the initial group to notice him, aside from Raine for obvious reasons, and Terra only because she accidentally met Hunter’s eyes in reigning Raine in. Adrian does even have a conflict with Hunter in Labyrinth Runners, and a likely vendetta given his cruel treatment.

Have we ever found out Hailey's age? I've a few different answers out there and now I'm just confused.

I think I've broken this down before, but I'm too lazy to find it.

To my recollection, they've never given Hailey or anyone else on the team a specific date of birth other than Erin and Kim.

For Erin, we know they were preparing to celebrate her 30th Birthday in 2x20, which aired in late April 2015. Ergo, Erin was born in April-ish 1985.

Kim, they gave a glimpse of her medical/personnel file or something in an episode in season 4(? I think), which gave her birth year 1988 (and I also believe gave her middle name as Rebecca). But that's it. We got nothing on anyone else.

The only thing to keep in mind when trying to figure out her age on the show is that Hailey could not have become a cop before she turned 21. The minimum age requirement to enter the Police Academy is 21. You can sit the pre-required testing at 20, but you can't start anything else until you are 21.

Under the cut because this got long.

For me—always, but especially after 9x13—Hailey having a birthday later than extremely early 1991 is impossible. And even 1991 honestly is a stretch to me. I tend to go with 1990 as her DOB, I think it just fits all the info that we've been given over the years the best.

Here's my evidence

4x21: We have a firm date here, February 9, 2003. That's when Hailey's family's restaurant got robbed, and that's when she met Trudy; Trudy is why she became a cop. Great! I think this date is what gets retconned later; more on that in a bit.

Chicago Med 5x04 the Infections crossover: When Hailey is in quarantine with Amanda, she talks about the robbery and Trudy being her inspiration for being a cop. She says she was 12 years old when the restaurant was robbed. Since, up to this point, we know this occurred in Feb 2003, 1990 is likely and early 1991 is reasonable but not as probable. Again, we know this age gets retconned later; hold tight on it for a second.

Until 8x11, these things were canon and solidly put Hailey's birthday falling between February 10, 1990, and February 9, 1991 (how much would it have sucked if the robbery was on her birthday?!?). Statistically, it favours her being born in 1990.

From here, we enter retcon territory.

8x11: This episode aired in 2021 and screws up the previous canon. Here, Hailey said she's been a cop for 12 years. This makes a 1990 or later birthday impossible. Because 2021-12+2009. Meaning the latest she could have been born was late March/very early April 1989, and assumes she became a cop right when she was 21 years old. Making 1988 (or earlier) more probable.

However, 9x13 both corrected 8x11 and then screwed more things up. BUT! Because how long Hailey had been on the job is now a plot point in the episode, it's a lot safer from being retconned, and what has to inform her age because we a specific age she has to have been at the start of her career.

9x13: They celebrate Hailey's 10 years of being a cop. This episode aired in 2022. To be a cop for 10 years when this episode aired in late Feb 2022, Hailey can be born no later than late Feb 1991 and again favours 1990 (or earlier) as her year of birth.

9x13 is also where the robbery comes back into play. She told Kevin she was 10 when it happened. Given everything else we get in this episode that firms up that a DOB no later than Feb 1991 is possible one of two things happened with the robbery date:

1) She misspoke (unlikely IMO given how imprinted that event likely is on her.) You can apply the same logic to 8x11 if you want.

2) They've retconned when the robbery happened shifting it earlier (2000/2001 ish). Given that February 2003 hasn't been mentioned again since 4x21 and really wasn't the main point of that scene, this is more likely.

So, if you're looking to give Hailey's age for something that is in line with the current canon of the show, She's 33 to 34 years old. You could go for a couple years older as well fairly easily, but anything younger than 33 doesn't fit the info they've given us.

- RECENT READS: I finished House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas at the very beginning of February and I've had a book hangover since then! Not that I was 100% satisfied with the ending of Crescent City but it's been hard to get into something new. I've started book 1 in the Crowns of Nyaxia series, The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent, but I haven't managed to finish it or its sequel yet. After that, I'll probably go back to finishing the Letters of Enchantment duology by Rebecca Ross, The Cruel Prince series by Holly Black, or the Hades and Persephone saga by Scarlett St. Clair. I'm tempted to finally dive into some Leigh Bardugo works, some V.E. Schwab, or start Katee Robert's Neon Gods series.

I have 166 books on my Kindle and I've finished maybe 50 of those so far, if it's any indication on how long my TBR list is. And I haven't even mentioned my historical, contemporary, and/or gothic romance picks on that list...
