Regal Greece Ridge's Last Picture Show

The cinema scene in my home county has been remarkably stable for most of my moviegoing life. Five multiplexes with 10+ screens went up from 1996 to 2000 and a wave of smaller theater closings ended in 2002. Then, for 18 years, the status quo basically held—some temporary shutdowns for renovations or ownership changes, but that was it.

COVID-19, of course, changed all that. Regal Culver Ridge 16 closed with all the rest on March 15, 2020, but never reopened. The Cinema, last of the Rochester neighborhood theaters, went dark for over a year before reopening with new management and a new dine-in model. Pittsford Cinema 9 is following in their footsteps.

Now, with Regal's parent company facing bankruptcy, another one of their theaters is shuttering. Regal Greece Ridge (est. 1998) was, in my memory at least, the only local theater built into a shopping mall. Because it was on the other side of town, I never visited until 2014 (for viewing #5 of Godzilla with a friend who lived nearby). Then I moved nearby in 2017 and started going there semi-regularly... until AMC hired me at the end of 2018 and I got to watch most everything there for free. Since 2017 was the same year I started obsessively tracking my movie outings, I can list everything I saw at Greece Ridge: Dunkirk, Battle of the Sexes, Coco, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Every Day, Blockers, Rampage, A Quiet Place, Deadpool 2, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and M3GAN. Note the gap. I didn't have much reason to come back after I got jabbed and pledged allegiance to Cinemark, but I had to see it off.

It wasn't some hidden gem. Stadium seating, middling number of screens, no premium formats besides 3D, and not much to look at visually. But 25 years is time enough to make a lot of memories, and movie theaters are what's known as "anchor tenants"—they draw in a lot of people who can then be enticed to patronize nearby shops afterwards. So if no one swoops in to switch the projectors back on and keep the soda flowing, it'll damage every store in the mall. And it'll always be the place where I first saw the movie that broke the Internet (which I, for the record, still adore).

For posterity—it's not like newspapers print these things anymore—here are the showtimes for the theater's final day. No Scream VI, which feels a little defiant. Maybe the staff just wanted a quiet night. Hopefully they've all had time to line up better things.

I’m trying to make a weekly movie in the theater a thing again. I did years ago and I enjoyed it. Nice solo time, though if others request to join I won’t stop them. So far have seen Barbie with my mom and Haunted Mansion solo. I go on Tuesday where the ticket is $5.75 and snacks are also discounted.

I did enjoy Barbie, but honestly I don’t have much to add to the conversation about it that hasn’t been said.

However…Haunted Mansion? I will admit I was only semi interested and only selected it because I simply wanted to see a movie and nothing else peaked my interest. HM is the type of movie maybe I’d select on Disney + after scrolling for 30 minutes.

However I ended up loving it. Good mix of humor, serious moments, good plot, good twists, good casting, etc. I throughly enjoyed it the whole time.

I have a feeling people might be sleeping on it. If anyone wants to see a movie I would a thousand percent recommend the Haunted Mansion. You will not be disappointed.

regal cinemas won’t stop emailing me about a holiday discount on their unlimited movie pass and it’s only annoying because i actually AM interested in it and it would pay for itself if i watched two movies a month--but since it’s a year pass i can’t afford the $200 upfront so it’s just rude of them to keep reminding me

#i'm hoping they'll do the same $50 off again next year and that maybe next holiday season i'll be able to afford to treat myself #i much prefer watching movies in theaters #(i enjoy watching them at home for different reasons obviously especially if it's with someone else--but alone i love a theater experience) #and even though there are times when my local theater doesn't have anything i really want to see #there are other periods (like this fall and winter) when i'd happily see 4 or 5 movies #they just all come out at once sometimes so i only pick one or two all season #also unrelated to this but related by sheer timing: i bought my tickets today for she said and black panther 2 #i'm very looking forward to seeing them tomorrow :D #(and i'm happy to be finally using my gift card from LAST christmas lol) #regal cinemas #advertising #movies

Whoever made "World Cinema Day" a thing during a fucking inventory and employee shortage, fuck you 🖕🏾.

Movie tickets were three dollars today and people definitely took advantage of that shit, let me tell you.

I've never seen the count go to two thousand before, even with movies like Spiderman (which was also an awful time to work at the movies).

Our oven broke last month so we have no oven food (pizza, pretzels, etc), we ran out of hotdogs, and at one point our popcorn machine broke. And people were still assholes despite clearly seeing how crazy it was today.

I worked 2-10 today, I'm dead inside 💀

On the bright side, I did find 10 dollars while cleaning a theater (I split it with the other person was cleaning with) so that was nice. And we also got to wear normal shirts as long as they had movies on them and our manager bought us pizza, so it was at least somewhat enjoyable for us.

But goddamm I hope this isn't gonna be an annual thing 💀.
