The family of Regis Korchinski-Paquet has filed a $10 million civil lawsuit in connection with her death.
Korchinski-Paquet died after falling from the balcony of her High Park apartment while Toronto police officers were in her home on May 27, 2020.
The statement of claim, filed on June 27, names the City of Toronto, five Toronto police officers who were at the scene that night, the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), Ontario's attorney general and Joseph Martino of Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
The SIU cleared the police officers who were involved in the incident, saying while their efforts to de-escalate the situation were unsuccessful, none of them broke the law.
The civil suit claims, in part, that the officers deliberately misled the SIU investigation as well as the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD), and also shared false information about Korchinski-Paquet following her death.
Jason Bogle, the lawyer representing the family, said at a Wednesday afternoon news conference that the facts officials have published about the case don't align with what was captured on surveillance video.
The family's OIPRD complaint said no one in the family saw any police officers act in a way that showed they were following de-escalation techniques, or acting on mental health training.

Newly released race-based data renews calls to defund Toronto police
The release of previously unseen Toronto police statistics showing disproportionate enforcement and use of force against Black residents has reignited calls for the police to be defunded, two years after the city council rejected such a proposal.
Following the release of the data on Wednesday, several anti-racism and civil rights organizations said that redirecting police funding to social supports and services would improve community safety.
Instead of assurances that police will do better in the future, the No Pride in Policing Coalition has been seeking a “political solution” from Toronto's mayor and council, who are facing a municipal election in the fall, according to Cole.
He believes that defunding and eventually abolishing police would help ensure that “they can't hurt us like this any longer." Police continue to fail to serve and protect Black people, according to Teku, executive director of the BLAC, “and yet, year after year, all levels of government continue to pour money into police services.”
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association's director of criminal justice, Abby Deshman, said police “need to step back and make room for social service supports and civilian-led crisis interventions.”
According to the office of Toronto Mayor John Tory, he believes in “investing in eliminating systemic racism in the Toronto Police Service” and has backed recent reforms, including those that led to the collection and release of race-based data.
Two Toronto councillors proposed a motion in 2020 to cut the force's budget by 10 percent or $107 million and redirect the funds to community services.
The motion was defeated in favour of the mayor's proposed reforms, which included anti-racism measures and the use of body-worn cameras.
Thousands of people flocked to Toronto streets over several weeks to demand changes in policing, prompting the decision.
The demonstrations were part of a worldwide outcry following the police killing of George Floyd, a Black man from Minneapolis. They also came just weeks after Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a 29-year-old Black woman from Toronto, died after falling from her balcony while police were in her home.
The public discussions about defunding police at the time, according to Tecle, were an important acknowledgement that police do not represent safety for racialized people and other historically marginalized groups.
Defunding and eventually abolishing police forces people to engage in a “total reimagining” of society, he said, noting that many communities have already put in place systems to keep themselves safe without calling the cops out of necessity.
On Wednesday, Toronto police showed that in 2020, Black people in the city faced a disproportionate amount of police enforcement and use of force and were more likely to have an officer point a gun at them--whether they were armed or unarmed--than white people in the similar situations.
According to the report, Middle Easterners were overrepresented in law enforcement and the use of force. Meanwhile, Latino and East and Southeast Asian residents saw less enforcement than the general population but when they did interact with police, they saw more use of force.
There were also racial disparities in strip searches, with Indigenous, Black and white residents being searched disproportionately in comparison to the number of arrests.
The figures were the first to be made public under the force's race-based data policy, which was implemented in 2019 after the provincial government passed legislation requiring several government agencies to collect such data. It came after a series of reports on race and policing.
As the statistics were released Ramer apologized to the city's Black residents, saying the force needed to do better.
Ramer was asked about calls to defund police and whether the force would consider offloading some services to community groups during his press conference.
A request for comment from Tory's office was not immediately returned on Thursday.

Justice for Regis Korchinski-Paquet, Help Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Hi everyone,
Mod Lesya here.
On May 27th, 2020, police were called on Regis Korchinski-Paquet to take her to the mental health hospital for treatment. Instead of receiving care, she was pushed off the balcony by police. The police are calling it “unfounded allegations” and have claimed her death as a suicide.
Tumblr media
News about her death isn’t widespread, and the police coverup has been swift. There is a long racist history with Toronto police, and they are a notoriously corrupt police force even among police forces.
The story is: while her mother and brother waited in the hall, police entered the apartment. Her family heard her cry for help, silence, then police returning saying she fell to her death.
Canada has had sporadic protests in response, but I do not want her death to be downplayed by the situation in America. This is an international issue of police violence.
A History of Police Deaths in Canada
Police are just as corrupt, just as racist, and just as terrible in Canada as they are in America. This is being tagged as Black Lives Matter because it is primarily about Regis, and this section is to detail how her death is not an isolated incident of racialized violence by police.
Black and Indigenous people have been killed in Canada en masse either by police, or their deaths at the hands of others have been ignored by police.
Toronto had a homophobic serial killer targeting black and brown men that was ignored by police for years.
Some high profile racialized deaths across Canada (primarily Indigenous and black immigrants)
Colton Boushie’s killer was allowed to walk free
While this isn’t specifically to Black lives, it shows that Canada’s justice system is not better than America’s.
Protests
As far as I’m aware, most protests remained peaceful, and no violence has erupted. The protests are taking the form of vigils, primarily. Protests are also scheduled at later dates.
Montreal protests turned violent on June 1st at 8 pm, after 3 hours of peace, when police fired tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd. This protest is specifically being reported as one for George Floyd.
Violence in Canada has remained minimal, but most people are not aware of the death. Canada is beginning to spark in protests in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

so the riots in minnesota,,,,
first of all: they were started by undercover cops. there’s video evidence of an undercover identified as jacob pederson smashing windows and starting the autozone fire, though he probably did more. the police are known to plant undercovers in protests to start violence and make the protesters look bad.
now that that’s out of the way, let’s move on.
these riots are being used to demonize the protestors and take away from the death of innocent people of colour. people are more angry about property damage than the fact that george floyd was saying that he couldn’t breath for 7 minutes while a cop kneeled on his throat. people care more about a chain store that will barely take a hit than the hundreds of poc that have been murdered by police purely for the colour of their skin.
these riots are not the product of a single death. these riots are all of the anger and trauma and sadness about years of this shit finally coming to the surface.
we tried peace. it didn’t work. they didn’t listen. the police weren’t listening. the government wasn’t listening. so we had to speak their language.
cops fired tear gas and rubber bullets at innocent protesters. they aimed for people heads. they aimed for injured people and those helping them. their violence was met with violence.
the target was burned for supporting the police department and refusing to sell supplies to tear gas victims. all of this looting and burning and vandalism is to make people fucking listen.
the president of the united states used a quote from a known racist in a tweet that threatened his own citizens. the national guard has been dispatched with approval to use lethal force. even now, the system is trying to silence the protesters by any means necessary. it’s fucking disgusting.
i support the protesters, and i only wish i could be there with them. you use your voice, because some people can’t. support the protesters any way you can. yell and scream and put up a fight. make the system listen. and if you’re going to go to a protest or riot, know basic safety and bring supplies. remember, silence is support for the bad guys.
george floyd
regis korchinski
tony mcdade
they were all killed within 72 hours. they were all killed by police. they were all black. say their names, and the names of all the other black people who have had their lives taken by cops and the corrupt system.
we tried peace. it didn’t work. if burning it all down is what it takes to get our voices heard, then we burn it all down. we can’t stop now. this IS the tipping point, and revolution is coming.

These men were unjustly killed today by cops for protesting for their right to live. THIS is why Black Lives Matter. I'm disappointed by Tumblr, a place that claims to be about intersectional activism has been silent about this movement and what they're doing right now. As a start, I'm asking everyone to look these petitions up on Google and sign them. Then, search up the George Floyd petition, the Regis Korchinski-Paquet petition, and every fucking petition that is demanding justice for these lives that were taken unjustly.
CORRECTION: James Scurlock’s killer was not a cop. It was an Omaha bar owner. Thank you to @caius-apologist for pointing it out. That’s on me, and I will do better as I should’ve already been doing.
From this post onwards, I am using my platform to raise awareness on the #blacklivesmatter movement.

non canadian followers, especially americans, please take a minute to email toronto mayor john tory about the murder of regis korchinski-paquet at [email protected]. here’s a script i used for my email:
My name is ____. I am a resident of ____ dismayed and disgusted by the murder of Regis Korchinski-Paquet by Toronto police. I am demanding a full and public investigation into her death. It is your responsibility as the mayor of this city to be transparent with your citizens, especially regarding such an important issue. This crime should not be pardoned or ignored because it was committed by the so-called officers of the law. The cops who killed Regis should be tried for murder. Black lives matter.

Regis Korchinski-Paquet died after falling to her death from her 24th floor apartment’s balcony in Toronto while alone with police called to respond to a domestic incident. Police refused her mother and brother entry to the apartment while alone with her.
Regis had a history of epileptic seizures and mental health issues. Police were responding to a call to take her to the local mental health centre for treatment. NEVER trust police to deal with people in a mental health crisis, especially BIPOC + women

Bottom line is... these cops wouldn’t even be standing trial if it weren’t for the riots. You can condemn it all you want while praising only the protesters...but we went from just the one officer being charged (which is success in of itself and that’s saying a lot) to ALL four officers being charged with 2nd degree murder; and people think we got there from protesting peacefully?? When:
Colin Kaepernick protested PEACFULLY and all he got was black listed
They protested in Ferguson, and all the activist were murdered (May they all rest in power ✊🏾)
And we protested for Trayvon Martin and Zimmerman’s big racist ass is out signing autographs
In a lot of cases (like this one) protesting only brings awareness, but it’s the riots that brought the results. But anyway, if you’re still upset about all the rioting this summer save yourself the embarrassment of being a hypocrite by not celebrating these riots this summer either:
Pride
Independence Day
Labor Day

my people should be free to live
black people should survive
and not just survive but live
we should be free to live lives where we are not afraid of the people who control the laws that are there to "protect us"
we should be free to live lives where we can be loud, go to a store, stay in our very own homes, without fearing for our existence
we should be free to live in a world where when you see injustice you report it, where others shout and scream till our oppressors are defeated
we should be free to live just as our white counterparts do so easily, without being judged by the amount of melanin in our skin, by the way our hair curls, the form of our bodies or by the way we speak
we need to be free to live our lives
if you have a platform use it
tell your family
tell your neighbours
tell your friends
and then tell them some more
shout and scream over and over again until my people are free to live
shout their names till your voice is sore because this world needs change before humanity is no longer humane
black lives matter and we cannot rest until they truly do
and while we're at it fuck cops man
