hello, sexiest man alive committee? yes I'd love to nominate Lou Wilson and Brian Murphy for attempting to speed-write an actual in-universe 300-word essay in 5 minutes of real time as Fabian and Riz posing as Fabian with complete earnest and a 120 percent commitment. both this effort and the incredibly smooth hand-off in the middle of it was maybe the most attractive thing i've ever seen a man do
yes it's a dungeons and dragons show. don't put me on hold. hello

thinking about the bad kids slowly dying off, one by one.
thinking about them carrying the ashes of their fallen to the next funeral, and the next, till its adaine sitting on a pew alone with all her friends ashes, sobbing, realizing she is alone, she will be alone, that they're never coming back.
thinking about adaine, numb after the years, with tokens of her friends in her pockets.
kristen's hair ties: sometimes adaine washes her hair with shampoo that smells like she did, puts on her old tye-dyed t-shirts.
riz' necktie, it's threads coming unraveled at the worn edges. it used to smell like his cologne.
gorgug's playlists still comfort her, the uncompromising, screaming, yet somehow gorgeous music blasting. it drowns out all the years spent without him, takes her right back to the day they went to basrar's for the first time.
fig's guitar sits in her room. adaine tries to learn how to play, hears the echo of figs laugh through the strings. she takes up smoking cloves.
fabian left adaine all his gold jewelry, and she keeps a strip of his old battle sheet in her pocket. the elves in kai lumenera welcome her with open arms every few decades, the trees swaying with the memory of fabian's dancing, his lilting voice still carried in the wind.
"the bad kids," and yet, everything they had was so good: still, all lovely things must come to an end.
before adaine lays down for the last time, she pulls on an old IDK tee, now-long hair tied up just how kristen used to. it doesn't match, but she still ties riz' gregorian necktie, just slightly too tight. she's rusty, now— riz had her tie his tie once, but that was so long ago now. she puts in earrings, clasps a necklace, decorates her long, elven fingers with sparkling diamond rings. she plays an old, old song on bass. it's harsh, unforgiving metal, but beautiful and melodic to her ears.
thinking about their inherent tragedy.
aelwyn takes everyone else's ashes to the last funeral.

weird bad kid’s headcannons that are cannon To Me with little to no explanation:
fabian gets stress related stomach ulcers/has a very sensitive stomach in general
adaine is tall. in my head as tall as fabian and def way taller than aelwyn(which aelwyn hates cuz like. she’s a baby why is she so tall)
gorgug is just. covered in stretch marks. dude probs grew like a foot in a year his back is like. all stretch marks
this is part of my anti-medicine applebees campaign but kristen has this corn paste she makes as like a healing ointment thing(one of the only things she still holds onto from her mom) and everyone fucking fiends for it cuz it does wonders for soothing scar tissue
riz has v sensitive eyes especially to light (goblins were originally nocturnal, which also could explain his odd hours) so he steals fabian’s snazzy uv protection sunglasses
adaine steals the stolen glasses from riz sometimes cuz she’s sensitive to light after she has visions (they really hardly count as fabian’s glasses anymore)
fig got really into doing her nails in middle school but now that she plays the bass it is a constant battle between wanting to do cool designs and knowing that they’ll get destroyed when she plays (one of the nice things about being a teifling tho is that her nails are way stronger now and grow a lot faster)
to compromise she just does gorgug’s nails instead
riz and kristen will have little competitions of who can pop the most joints and everyone else. hates it it’s terrible to listen to (especially fabian, he will leave the room if they start)
yeah just. my guys

the friendship between riz and fabian is so beautiful because it's so subtle. just the little things that show fabian really cares and notices riz is beautiful to me. he has conspiracy board equipment already at his house, he notices every time riz disappears to hide, he literally still uses the special nickname riz got at the start of freshman year when they met (despite no one else really using it much anymore) because it's special to him and their friendship. how fabian shows his love to his loved ones is genuinely so sweet and special.

TW death, grief
---
Five Funerals
They lose Fig first.
Comes with the territory when you're an archdevil - somebody's always looking to take your spot. "Don't worry about it," she says, opening a Planeshift to the recording studio. "It's just the usual rebellious fiends. Icythorz and Bolhondrus and the rest. I'll be back before you know it." She looks resplendent in black leather, the Unfaithable Bass slung across her back, riding the fiery Daymare surrounded in jagged red shards.
Adaine knows before everyone else, but can't believe the vision to be true until she learns that Ayda is gone, too. She scratched every memory of Fig out of her notes before starting over - it was too much pain to bear. The five of them know how it feels.
---5---
It's a few years before they take another hit. Another mission to the Mountains of Chaos, another world-ending calamity to be stopped because Who Else Is Going To Save The World? A small misstep, a miscalculation (six where there should be five, they're only five now) and suddenly the routine becomes deadly.
Riz takes the fall. "It's easier this way," he says, in his last moments. "I'll still see you." And he does. Agent Gukgak Jr., now, with some extra responsibility. But he still comes by. Sometimes. Every so often. Often enough.
---4---
Kristen is next. Only one thing could bring down the most gifted cleric of the age - sacrificing herself for her friends. Third time's the charm when it comes to death, it turns out.
Gorgug is the most hopeful that she'll come back, that she'll find a way again, like in the Nightmare Forest. But Adaine knows this is the end. Even Arthur Aguefort agrees. He quotes Alanis Morissette at her funeral. The followers of Cassandra pull out all the stops.
Adaine, Fabian, and Gorgug have their own ceremony at Ashgrove, next to the Gukgak family plot. It's quiet. Bucky cries into Ragh's shoulder. Aelwyn, Jawbone, and Gertie collect flowers. Tracker stays for a few minutes to say goodbye.
---3---
They quit adventuring after Kristen's funeral. And they don't lose anyone else for a long time. Riz still visits, every few years. They talk about the good old days, how silly it was that Baron was so terrifying when at the end of the day it was an honest conversation that finally did him in. There's rumours that Kristen has ascended to goddesshood herself - Adaine doesn't buy it. She's not the type to be revered.
They come out of retirement for the only reason they would - to bring back one of their own. They finally found Fig's soul, trapped in a ruby in the darkest levels of the Abyss. They can't ask anyone to come with them - it's too dangerous, it's too personal. It's missions like this that kill people.
And when it's all over, when Adaine carries Fabian's burnt, unconscious body back to Morded Manor, they have another funeral to plan.
Gorbag and Roz have already passed, and Wilma and Digby are too old to make preparations, so it falls to Jawbone to organize it. He knows they don't want a lot of fanfare. It's at Ashgrove again, just Adaine and Fabian and the Thistlesprings, and Aelwyn and Ragh. Sandra-Lynn is back in Solace - she sends Adaine a heartfelt text saying she appreciates the invitation, but she can't bring herself to come.
Riz doesn't show for the ceremony - he's desperately scouring the heavenly realms, trying to make sure Gorgug ended up somewhere he wasn't afraid of. Orcish heaven doesn't have him, he reports, and neither does Cassandra.
If he's trapped in the Abyss with Fig, at least they have each other.
---2---
Adaine sees Fabian's death the night of Gorgug's funeral. She needs to prepare, she tells herself. She knows it's going to be hard. She needs all the time she can get, and she needs to know which goodbye will be their last.
They grow old together. Not romantically, although some speculate. Fabian becomes a multiclass advisor at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy. Adaine works in Bastion City as an archivist, with occasional trips to Fallinel for Oracle services. They go for vacations sometimes, but never for too long. The memories find them no matter where they go. Sometimes Adaine wishes she could be Ayda, scrape off the old wounds and start fresh. Arthur talks about her sometimes. She's never had the same spark as that one lifetime, he says.
Adaine watches the wrinkles grow beside Fabian's eye, watches his hair turn grey, watches the Future of Dance become its Mentor. He trades his Battlesheet for a cane-sword, then a regular cane. He takes to wearing the Gregorian necktie to classes, no matter how much it clashes with his outfit. They both wonder how many of their own teachers lost party members.
Adaine holds Fabian's wrinkled hand on his deathbed, in his old room at Seacaster Manor. He grins, flashes the same perfect teeth as on the first day of Freshman Year. "Bet you didn't see this one coming, did you?"
"I did," she whispers, tears streaming down her young elven face. "I knew it would end like this. But I always hoped it would last forever."
They're the last words he hears.
It's not the first funeral Adaine organizes. All the Bad Kids held one for Buddy Dawn, back in high school. She and Fabian worked together on the services for Jawbone, Ragh, and Chungledown Bim - who finally caught up to Fabian in both of their old ages. It is the first funeral she has to organize alone.
Some of Fabian's students attend. Arthur Aguefort gives a short speech, and a few students hear the story of Kalvaxus' return for the first time. Adaine sits with Aelwyn in the front row, a few seats down from Hallariel. Gilear records the service to show Telemaine later. Riz is somewhere deep undercover - he maybe hasn't even heard yet.
She always knew she'd be the last. She didn't expect it to hurt so much.
---1---
Adaine stumbles through a few years before she finds herself again. They pass so fast without a mortal lifespan to hold up against them. She drifts between Fallinel and Bastion City for the most part, with occasional return trips to Elmville. Aelwyn always has a place for her to stay. Seacaster Manor was turned into a dormitory for Aguefort students who needed a place to study, or sleep, or stay away from home for a while. Tracker converted Morded Manor into a temple/bed-and-breakfast for worshipers of Galicaea. Strongtower Luxury Apartments was demolished soon after Fabian started teaching at Aguefort. It seems like everything is different now.
Adaine visits Leviathan once, on a whim. The Compass Points hasn't changed a bit. On a chance meeting in the stacks, Ayda looks at her with a spark of familiarity.
"Adaine Abernant?"
"Yes... you remember me?"
Ayda shakes her head. "There are mentions of you in my journals. I leave journals for when I regenerate-"
"I know. I remember."
Ayda looks intrigued. "I wrote that you were a great wizard, and a good friend. I hear from other sources that you are the Elven Oracle. Perhaps you can shed some light on why the pages around yours are torn to shreds or redacted to the point of unreadability?"
Adaine places a gentle hand on Ayda's shoulder. "I don't know if you'd want that. You lost someone you cared about, so much that you thought it was better to forget her than to bear the pain of losing her."
Ayda considers this. "Is it better to forget?" she asks. "Would you give up the memories of those you lost, in order to keep a logical mind?"
"No. Not for anything."
"Then we should talk."
Adaine smiles. "I'd like that."

(you're) all i wanna breathe
The Magicians
Queliot
Summary: written for the #HappyAnniversaryQueliot fanart challenge. It's Quentin and Eliot's five year anniversary.
Excerpt:
When Quentin Coldwater sits down at the breakfast table, and Eliot Waugh sets a blindfold down on said table, his mind goes absolutely wild.
But, Eliot, in a stunning display of seriousness, places a hand overtop it and says, “Mind out of the gutter, Q.” Before Quentin can so much as think of a lie through that , Eliot picks up his hand and adds, “I’ve got a surprise.”
No Kidding , Quentin thinks, eyes still locked on the small scrap of silk sitting next to his eggs. They’ve been plenty adventurous over the years, but somehow they’d never quite traversed the land of the unseeing, as Quentin liked to call it. Or, would like to call it, if Eliot weren’t raising a knowing eyebrow in his direction.
Quentin makes a noise at the back of his throat and lifts his fork to shovel some eggs—perfectly cooked, delicious eggs, also provided by his incredibly generous boyfriend. He stops mid chew, and looks between the eggs and Eliot, a sense of dread pooling in his stomach.
“You’re being particularly perfect today,” he accuses.
“Most people would say, wow, Eliot, how thoughtful, how kind, how wonderful. Thank you for being such an amazing, and attentive significant other.”
And, oh, that’s dangerous talk coming from Eliot Waugh.
Quentin swallows, narrowing his eyes. “What are you up to?”

SIX COLOURS
She hadn't been this organised for years. Honestly, probably not since her own dad had sat down and put a wall calendar in front of her with a red pen and told her to pull herself together. Last night though Fig had cried with her head against Sandra Lynn's shoulder and then fell down the stairs with her foot stuck in a bucket of cement, and this morning she had come downstairs to find Adaine sniffling as Kristin slept with her head in her lap, and she had had more than one meeting with the Thistlesprings or Sklonda about how horrifically busy their kids were. She took the silence from Seacaster manner to mean something equally as troubling with how often Fabian was crushed under a puppy pile of other bad kids in one bed or another.
It didn't take a genius to know that they were tumbling towards burnout.
So she had called off of work, asked Jawbone to email her all the kids' schedules, and then called the school to talk to the rogue teacher about paying better attention to their students because Riz's schedule was insane. After that, she drove to the local art store and picked up the biggest cork board they had and a million different things in sets of six. Six balls of yarn, six journals, six diaries, six wall calendars, six sets of gel pens, and six boxes to fill with snacks at the local hobby shoppe.
It was maybe silly, but she was careful in assigning colours, one for each kid so they could keep their stuff straight. Even if they didn't use the planners and the bags of chips went stale, she could figure out their favourite colours.
She chose a light purple for Gorgug, who was so kind and gentle, but so good at letting his friends in on how deep the recesses of his mind went when he was left alone for too long. Crimson was red for Fabian, who was so confident and uplifting but bled emotion and love and care for his people. Riz got a deep, emerald green because he was so energetic and smart and freely affectionate. Her intelligent, careful Adaine got cornflower blue, a softer, less brash version of the colour that Sandra Lynn hopes was calming. Her loud, thoughtful Kristin got a yellow that reminded her of honey and buttercups because Kristin was a mess of tangles and wanted to be there for everyone who needed her to catch them. Fig got pink because sometimes she caught her little demon picking at the paint on the walls as if it would still be that same blush underneath. Like it had been before they moved to Mordred Manor. As if she could go back to before everything was messy, or at least tidy it up again.
On a whim (or call it mother's intuition), she picked up stickers and tape as well so everyone could decorate theirs if they wanted to, and smiled at the halfling who checked out her cart.
It was late, nearly nine, by the time the last few bad kids trickled in through the doors and her shoulders sank at the lack of lame excuses or too-innocent grins. Instead, Fabian and Gorgug sighted practice, and Riz was covered in honey for some reason. They followed her instructions and sat themselves around the kitchen table like she asked, and she wished whichever deity was currently listening to make this easier for them. Hadn't these kids died for this world enough times?
There were nachos and hot cookies thanks to Lydia — who had squeezed her arm so tight that it hurt when she explained and dragged her right back down to earth — and she had dropped a paper bag in front of each of them, their names scrawled on in sharpie. She didn't know how to do this, how to be the mom who kept everyone's shit together, but she had tried the passive thing and the wedge between her and Fig had been brutal; that wouldn't happen again. It was time to muddle through the hands-on approach.
"I know you're tired," she started and grasped at her mug of coffee like a lifeline, "and I know everything is piling up, but I'm not gonna lose you kids to highschool, so we're gonna deal with it together."

had to do a long drive back to school today so for no particular reason here are the bad kids gas station roadtrip snacks:
adaine is a sour candy girl i know it in my soul(also fun fact eating sour candy can help override ur brain during a panic attack). sour patch watermelon candies + arizona iced tea is just like. her truth
kristen is canonically a yerba mate enjoyer and it shows. lemon yerba mate + dill sunflower seeds she eats shell and all
riz is the most prolific gas station food enjoyer so i feel like he will do something new eveytime, strategically trying to figure out what is the best drink + candy + chip combo, but his go to is blue bug juice + m&m’s + bugles
fig is too easy. the fuego takis + classic monster. sometimes peach rings
gorgug is a jacks links jerky boy. classic jerky + trail mix + water. he also does the dad thing of sticking his hand back and stealing snacks from everyone else as driver tax
fabian is the opposite of riz and just has. so little experience with gas station food and is frankly appalled by it. he will not eat the snacks but he will get blue gatorade
