Sonic is fighting Eggman on one of his evil lairs, nothing new. Tails helped him wreck some badniks but Sonic said he wanted to annoy Eggman by himself for a little bit, so the little fox wanders around the base, maybe he can collect some data to outpace Eggman before his next scheme, the control room is in the same place almost every time so he confidently enters the room after six seconds of hacking through the lock, a semi solid hologram of a girl with crimson eyes turns to him as he steps inside.
Sage, right, he remembers her, he suddenly also remembers that the “Chaos Energy Use Effects On Non Organic Beings” conference he wanted to see was airing live just at that time, but that was only because could see the program starting and being projected on the multiple screens of the room behind Sage. He keeps looking at them for a whole 10 seconds, then remembers where he is, and as he quickly returns his attention to the A.I. girl while he positions himself to fight, he notices she hasn’t displayed any security measures against him, he also noticed that while he was looking at the screens she only looked at him without stopping, not until now, as he can see how she turns her sight back to the biggest screen of the room without saying anything. He doesn’t say anything either.
He opted to watch the same screen as Sage, getting closer to her, apparently she didn’t mind him being here, if the fact that she didn’t stopped him when he sat on the floor just beside her said anything. He doesn’t remember how long was it since he sat down with her, he doesn’t remember when the yelling and fighting from the lair’s entrance stopped, but that’s good to him, at least now they can hear clearly the presenter’s q&a section.
The fight between hedgehog and madman stopped by the scientist request, as apparently he promised his daughter he would keep quiet that evening so she could enjoy her favorite talk show, a science one of course. The speedster agreed without much convincing, as he also remembered his little brother wanted to go home as early as they could to watch some investigator’s interview thingy.
They walked at a fast pace through the base looking for the fox kit so the old Egghead could kick them out of his house as soon as possible, the control room was the obvious answer for both of them if they wanted to find a curious boy on an evil lair, they didn’t expect to find said boy sitting on the ground smiling and talking energetically with with the translucent hologram A. I. Eggman called his daughter.
Sonic was no scientist, but he knew when someone was talking science, just as he knew how happy his little brother got anytime someone could keep up with him over physics, engineering, mechanics or anything of sorts kind of conversation, but the girl in front of Tails was speaking non-stop, loudly and expertly over some complicated calculations, and the kid’s twin tails wouldn’t stop wagging as he listened. Sonic grinned, he didn’t understand what they were really talking about, but the scene in front of his eyes screamed chemistry.
Even if Eggman could understand what they were talking about, he paid no attention to their voices, nor the motion of the fox’s tails, or how they both turned repeatedly to the screen behind them and then back to each other; focusing only on how his daughter’s eyes glimmered when she listened to the fox’s long answer to her comment, and the smile that they both offered each other when the screens turned off when the show finished. He never saw such smile on his daughter’s face before.

Silver, really obviously trying to choose his words carefully: All right then, Sonic! C'mon, uh, Shadow! I guess I'm gonna team up with ... you again! Let's take the fight to Eggman! ... and ... Sage!
Shadow, poker-faced: Glad to have you with us again, Silver.
Sonic, who has also noticed but has decided to just let Shadow deal with it: Yeah! Let's do it to it!
Sage, watching this on the monitors from inside the Egg Fortress:
(later)
Sage, in a showdown with Shadow: So, Shadow. It seems your group has split up.
Shadow: That's right. You and the Doctor are my family, and I need to see this through myself.
Sage: Indeed. But you must also know that I will do everything in my power to stop you from interfering with Father's plans.
Shadow: Of course. That, too, is just the way of the modern Robotnik family.
Sage:
Shadow:
Sage, almost casually: Silver knows both of us in the future, doesn't he.
Shadow, nodding: Oh, yes, most definitely.

New Story time!
This one is dedicated to the ever so talented @cosmoshard, who made the rough sketch that inspired this piece in the first place,
Tumblr media
also, this serves as some semi-revenge on her for making me cry on my birthday XD
This time, the story is focused the ARK siblings themselves, Shadow and Maria!
Tumblr media
=========================================
“Are you almost done yet grandpa?” Maria impatiently rocked back and forth on her feet, earning a light wack on her head from a piece of paper. “Hey!”
“Hold still, Maria! Your back needs to be straight and still.” Gerald exclaimed, the marker he was holding nearly creating a mark on top of Maria’s head, taking a moment trying to rub the stain from her hair with his fingers.
Maria made a face at Gerald, moving her head away from his hands. “I am holding still, grandpa! I’m trying to make sure I’m getting taller!”
“Well, you’re not making it easier with you doing all this fidgeting.” He placed his hands and her shoulders to keep her still. “Now just keep still. And don’t stand on your toes either.”
The girl fought the urge to roll her eyes as her grandfather finally made a mark on the wall, drawing a straight line while she backed away, bouncing on her feet. “Ok, you’re all done.”
She looked among marks and lines from previous measuring sessions, seeing that the current one was hovering above the previous line.
She let out a gasp and started jumping up and down. “I grew! I got taller, grandpa! See, look at it!”
”Yes, yes I see it.” He gave a pat to her head, taking notes on his clipboard. He walked over to his desk with Maria following close behind him.
She moved in front of him while he continued to write. “I can’t believe the new line you drew was higher this time! How tall am I now?”
Gerald paused and lifted up one of the papers to read it. “Well, according to the results, you’ve grown…” He stopped mid sentence, a look of surprise. “Oh my, this is odd.”
Maria stopped her joyful skipping, sensing his change in tone. “What, what is it?”
”It says here that your height from this month is less than it was last month.” He hung his head down, sighing dramatically and placing a hand on her shoulder. “I’m afraid that you're shrinking, my dear.”
His granddaughter’s face went from worried to annoyed in a second flat, pushing his hand away and rolling her eyes. “Grandpa….”
The man chuckled at her unamused expression. “I’m only teasing, you’ve grown about a total of 6 inches from last month. You’re about 4’3 now. Almost getting to 5 feet already.”
Maria’s face lit up and did a celebratory dance with some spinning involved, nearly bumping into Gerald in the process and tripping over her feet. He quickly caught her before she fell over, slinging an arm around her and pulling her close to his side.
”My goodness, I’ve never seen you so excited about something like this before, may I ask why?”
Wrapping her arms around him, she raised her head with a wide smile on her face. “Because! It’s the first time I’ve gotten this tall in awhile. You always told me that healthy kids grow big and tall whenever they eat their veggies and get enough sleep, it’s finally working for me!”
The smile on Gerald’s face faltered when she finished by hugging him tighter. Bless this child for keeping her hope high with a statement like this.
He always told her when she was younger that those things were important to do, eating as much healthy food to keep her immune system from failing, getting enough sleep so her body can get its rest, even those times where he told her not to tell lies otherwise her nose would grow long each time she did.
It made him grateful knowing that these little things were making a difference for her in her lonely life up here in the colony, even though it felt like it was wrong giving her such high expectations for her condition, since there was no cure for it but making her think that something like this is actually helping her illness when in reality it would barely make a dent in it overall broke his heart even more.
He forced a smile on his face and squeezed her back. “You're very right on that. I told you it would work out eventually.”
Maria beamed a wide smile, skipping towards the door. “Where are you heading off to?” Gerald called after her, making her nearly slip on the floor when she slowed herself down.
“I'm going tell him about it!”
“Who?”
“Shadow! He's been wondering if I was getting better, I gotta go and tell him before he gets worried!” She ran out of the room as soon as she finished, her pigtailed hair flying out wildly behind her as she disappeared before the doors even closed.
Gerald stood there in ear numbing silence, his hands clenched up into fists as those last words lasting through his ears like a forever frozen echo.
‘Wondering if I was getting better’....
A grim expression masked over his face. “Oh my child, if only it were as simple as that for you.”

A Father's Embrace
Summary:
“Father,” said Sage, “Metal Sonic has voiced to me that he would like a hug as well.”
(Eggman, post Frontiers and with the help of Sage, realizes something about the way he’s been treating Metal Sonic. Inspired by Egg Memo 19)
2855 words
The holo-matter generator was now capable of being stable for longer than a few seconds. It wasn’t capable of generating textures, only force, as air molecules were gathered into a rough approximation of a solid. Sage was now able to manipulate basic physical machines, such as levers, buttons, and switches, all of which would help her when interfacing with systems that were too primitive to be networked to.
And now came the final test.
Ivo stood in the center of the testing chamber. Sage materialized a few feet away, and a hum filled the room as the holo-matter generator whirled on. She waved a hand over her arms, chest, and legs.
Ivo smiled. “Come here, my girl.”
She inched closer, and he held his arms outstretched. She hovered out of reach for a moment, clutching one arm in the other. She then simulated a deep breath- she was getting so good at that! -and flew forward until she met his chest. Instead of phasing through, there was a gentle push of force against his sternum.
“Hologram stability remains at 98%.” She reported. “Holo-matter generator output is consistent according to my data. Can you confirm this observation?”
“I can.” He whispered. “May I commence the next stage of testing?”
“Yes.”
He brought his arms toward his chest, stopping when he hit the back barrier of her hologram. His pinky dipped into her graphic before she recalibrated the wall of force to push it back to her surface.
“Stability?” He asked.
“88%, but holding steady. Proceeding with reciprocation.”
He felt her arms press against his sides. So small they were. Such a delicate hold, as if the slightest gust of wind might shake her off.
“Father, you may be experiencing what my database refers to as ‘cuteness aggression’. Please remain mindful of your exertion of force.”
He dropped his embrace immediately. “Stability?”
“Still within acceptable levels.” Sage looked up. “Please. . . re-engage the test?”
He placed his hands back onto her back. He recognized, now that she’d pointed it out, the urge to hold her tight, to twirl her around, to shield her body with his own to protect her from all harm. . . as illogical as it was. The holo-matter projector could only project a force of around five pounds. So, instead, he began caressing a careful hand up and down her back.
“I will strike this unscientific language from the record when we are finished with this experiment, but I wish to inform you that this is wonderful, father.” Sage said.
“Absolutely wonderful. I concur.”
“Better than my simulations. Better than I could have ever speculated.”
He leaned forward to place a kiss on her head, but his lips passed through her hologram.
“Apologies, father!” Sage giggled. “Such an action was not detailed in the testing procedure. I have not generated holo-matter for that portion of my avatar.”
“It would seem we require further tests, then! Repetitions of this experiment would be greatly beneficial.” He smiled.
“Indeed!”
Ivo held her until the whir of the holo-matter generator became a roar, and a notification popped up, warning of an overheat. Spite drove him to stay curled around her, but alas, her tangibility vanished. She hovered, for a moment, a silent image in the shell of an embrace, before she phased through his arms.
“Test complete.” She reported. “The holo-matter generator will require thirty minutes to return to operation.”
“I’ll see what I can do to fix that.” Ivo walked over to the device.
Sage flew in front of him, blocking his path. “Current internal temperatures are high enough to inflict damage to your tissue- you must wait until the device is cool.”
“Ah, if you insist. How long?”
“Long enough for you to sit down for a meal. What shall I have the kitchen prepare?”
“Clever girl.” He wagged his finger. “If we’ve got the material for an egg salad sandwich, I’d like that.”
“Order sent successfully. Shall I accompany you to the dining room?”
“If you’ll have me, my dear.”
With a flick of her eyes, the door to the test chamber opened. They walked out and into the hall. Correction- he walked, she hovered, her hair and dress modeling appropriate undulations due to the air resistance. She’d worked so hard to detail her own animations. He couldn’t help but smile at that.
Before they could reach the dining room, Metal Sonic rounded the corner down the hall ahead of them.
“Hello, brother. Have you completed your task?” Sage went ahead and landed beside him.
Metal Sonic, of course, didn’t respond with anything visible or audible. The unit wasn’t programmed for that.
“That’s good. Mark that operation as done, and bring the production line to phase three once the resources arrive.” Sage instructed.
She could easily give this instruction to Metal Sonic over the network. She had remote command over every Badnik currently operating in the empire through the Eggnet, and she used it for such in every instance except for this particular unit in blue. Thankfully, Metal Sonic was the most well-equipped of his creations to constantly transport itself back and forth to her beck and call, but this habit of hers was still inefficient.
A small giggle from her wiped all the annoyance from his thoughts, though. “The experiment went wonderfully. I would like to include you in further repetitions of it if possible.”
“Don’t be silly, Sage.” Ivo said as he arrived beside the two.
“I am not. Calibrating the holo-matter generator against surfaces of different shape and density would generate useful data.”
“In that case, I suppose I’ll review it if you write a draft of the procedure.”
“Thank you.”
He gestured her back to his side and continued walking, yet she did not appear beside him. He paused, looking over his shoulder to find her still standing beside Metal Sonic.
“I’d like to propose a different variant of the experiment. Or perhaps, not an experiment at all, as the action will not serve for the purposes of data collection.”
“What is it?” He turned around.
“Brother has expressed to me that he would like a embrace from you as well.” Sage said. “Given that he already possesses a physical form, it would be a simple request to fulfill.”
Ivo saw his once-greatest creation stiffen as straight as a ramrod at the words.
No, that couldn’t be the case. It just had to be a trick of the light. Or a trick of his own mind. Pure projection, that was all.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Sage, reevaluate your previous statements for falsehoods.”
“I am not permitted to lie to you. You know this. My statement is based on evidence. Would you like me to show you the file-?”
She stopped herself. At the same time, Metal Sonic’s left pinky digit curled inwards, and that was no trick of the light at all. Sage covered her mouth. She then lifted from the floor and rejoined Ivo’s side. Metal Sonic began walking back down the hall. Walking quickly. Almost running.
“Apologies. Please disregard the previous conversation.” Sage waved him in the direction of the dining room.
“Metal Sonic, stop.” Ivo commanded.
The badnik froze in its tracks.
“Please disregard my previous words. They were in error.” Sage said.
“What kind of error?”
“. . . I am now aware that I was not supposed to bring his request to your attention.”
“Is that so?”
“This breach in etiquette was entirely my own. Please do not let this incident reflect poorly on him in your assessment of his functionality.”
Ivo walked around the motionless Badnik until he was directly in its path. It had ceased walking mid-stride, and stared directly ahead.
“Sage, I understand that you seek familial connections. Are Orbot and Cubot not to your satisfaction?” Ivo said.
“They are quite satisfactory. I enjoy an excellent relationship with them. Is there a reason I cannot pursue the same with Metal Sonic?”
“I’m sorry, my dear, but Metal isn’t designed for such a function. Too much of this sort of thing could start affecting his efficiency.”
“You have designed him with a short-term adaptive processor capable of intaking new data with ease. Furthermore, he has witnessed, quote, ‘this sort of thing’, in abundance during his extensive encounters with Sonic and Tails.”
“He is a weapon. He shouldn’t be bogged down with more of that sort of data than he needs to be to exploit it.”
“Should I not be ‘bogged down’ with this data, either, then?”
There was no hidden barb in her voice, and no malice in her eyes, yet it still felt as if Ivo had stumbled into a trap.
“Statistically, my emotional data hinders my processing speed by 7%.” Sage continued. “In order to achieve a higher rate of efficiency, shall I-?”
“NO! Absolutely not. Don’t you ever consider such a decision again!” Ivo pointed.
“Even if not doing so will put your life at stake?”
“Yes!”
“Understood, father.” She nodded. “If that is the case, then what is your command to Metal Sonic in this regard?”
Ivo lowered his hand and turned his gaze to the blue Badnik. It still hadn’t moved. His verbal command held perfect power over it; Metal Sonic was caught in suspension, frozen in time, held to stillness beyond the capabilities of a living organism. There was nothing to be read from its glowing red irises. No thought, no emotion.
Ivo thought he’d patched the “emotion” part out after the Neo Metal incident. That had required a near-total wipe of Metal Sonic’s operating system; rebuilding the AI had taken months, and it had taken even longer for it to relearn the more complex functions that came with experience. Catching any re-emergence of emotion in the early stage meant that it would be possible to simply order Metal Sonic back to the work bench and repeat the process, but. . .
He looked at Sage. Her hand covered her mouth, obscuring the intricate animation of worry painted onto her face.
“Sage, what do you think should be my command to him?” Ivo asked.
“If I may speak freely?”
“Of course, my girl. Always.”
“Have you not perfected my loyalty protocols in the current version of my operating system?”
“I don’t doubt your loyalty.”
“Is there a reason you can not implement similar loyalty protocols in Metal Sonic’s processor?”
“He’s simply not designed for that. You, my dear, are in the network. You accompany me everywhere, as it’s your primary function-”
“And as a result, I generate positive emotional data that strengthens my loyalty protocols instead of conflicting with them. I’m aware.”
“You are not permitted to interrupt me.” Ivo snapped. “What has gotten into you?”
“You gave me permission to interrupt you in regards to the imminent safety of yourself or the Egg Empire, and I’m interrupting on behalf of the Empire now. Root cause analyses show that the most significant causal factor in the Neo Metal incident was a conflict between emotional data and loyalty protocols. To prevent this recurrence, I am recommending that you utilize the same procedure that has seen resounding success with me.”
“It’s too late for that. I’d have to restructure his AI from the ground up to be more receptive to that sort of-”
“Negative. In fact, the last thing brother wants is to be reprogrammed.”
Ivo knelt down. He stared again into Metal Sonic’s irises. The projected ovals on the eyescreen were frozen, of course, but he knew that Metal’s camera mechanisms were independently mobile. It could be looking anywhere if it had the ability to shirk orders. It could simply be playing frozen and helpless on the surface, waiting to strike if provoked.
Or. . .
“Sage, access Metal Sonic’s emergency shutdown code, and be ready should he attempt to harm me.”
“He will not harm you. I apologize for referencing the Neo Metal incident. I thought it would illuminate the situation. I did not intend to imply that Metal Sonic has gone rogue in any capacity.”
“Of course I knew that. Now quit blathering and be ready.” Ivo snapped, before taking a deep breath. “Metal Sonic, relax.”
Its joints released. It stumbled a miniscule amount before restoring itself to an upright standing position.
“Is it true that you’ve developed emotional data despite the inhibitors?”
Metal Sonic did not reply.
“Answer me. There’s no purpose in trying to fool me now.”
“Father, Metal Sonic is incapable of-”
“Which is why I’m asking yes or no questions. Now answer!”
Metal Sonic’s head shifted a few millimeters up and down.
“And you did not report this malfunction to me?”
Another nod.
“Because you did not want to be reprogrammed?”
Another nod. Ivo pinched the bridge of his nose.
“You did not want to be reprogrammed because you’ve found a way around your intended programming again.”
Metal Sonic shook its head violently. Ivo flinched, but the Badnik did not make any further approach.
“Actually, Father,” Sage said quietly. “He does not wish to be reprogrammed because it would hinder his effectiveness to you. He is familiar with the length of the turnaround time after the erasure of his previous incarnation.”
“Show me the communication in which he stated this. You said you had the files.” Ivo pointed to her.
Her hologram flickered out of existence, and was replaced with a box of text displaying the finer workings of her operating system. She navigated through the folders, leading to a file labeled “Communications With Unit MS-1”. A wall of binary text appeared. In a second, various bits in the binary were underlined with blue.
“Shall I translate the text to english?” Sage asked.
“No, I can read it well enough.”
The binary words said exactly what she’d promised. He should have known. She would not- and as a matter of fact, could not -lie, yet he’d doubted her. He’d have to apologize later. He waved off the screen, and Sage transmuted herself back to her original form.
He looked back to Metal Sonic. “So you don’t see me as a roadblock in the way of your core directive?”
It shook its head.
“You don’t object to how you’ve been treated since I last reprogrammed you?”
A hesitation. Ah, there it was. Ivo gave a bitter smile.
“Father, if I may speak freely?” Sage asked.
“Yes, you may.”
“If I received the same treatment that you have given to Metal Sonic. . . I would object to it as well.”
Ivo stared at her.
“For efficiency’s sake. To prevent the aforementioned conflict of emotional data and loyalty protocols, amongst other things.” Sage added quickly.
Metal Sonic lowered his gaze to Ivo’s shoes.
“Why,” he swallowed, though this did nothing to ease the tightness in his throat, “are you informing me of this?”
“I do not wish for this current operating system of Metal Sonic to be erased.”
“I would never erase you, my girl, if that is your concern with all this.”
“I do not fear for my own life. I fear for his.”
Life.
An intelligence made of code and electrons. Brilliant and loyal and perfectly effective. The product of a true genius. Sage was all of this, her design perfected from previous iterations. He’d based the bulk of her data calculation and analysis programs off of the adaptive processing he’d developed for Metal Sonic’s OS.
. . . perhaps he’d created life a lot earlier than he’d thought.
Funny. He’d spent months laboring over Neo Metal Sonic’s code, unable to find the source of the catastrophic malfunction that’d overridden his prized creation’s processor. Now the answer couldn’t be more obvious. How could he have missed it?
“Just so everything is clear,” Ivo looked to Metal Sonic. “All you truly want from me. . . is a hug?”
Seconds passed, before it nodded.
Ivo laughed. He threw his head back and let his laughter spill down the hallway. He clapped a hand against Metal Sonic’s shoulder before standing.
“Father?” Sage asked.
“Yes?”
“Why are you expressing humor in this moment?”
“Don’t worry about it! Say, the kitchen should be ready with my sandwich, shouldn’t it? It’s about time I sat down and had a nice lunch with my children. Come along now.”
He started walking. He did not hear any footsteps following. Metal Sonic was staring at Sage. Communicating, most likely.
“Come along, you two. You wouldn’t leave your old man to starve, would you?”
“To clarify, Father- you do not wish for Metal Sonic to delete his emotional data?”
“No, keep it where it is. And Sage, clear my schedule for today. I want to take a look at his processor after this.”
“Rescheduling now.”
Metal Sonic curled its pinky digit.
“Don’t you worry. It’s not to erase you.” He assured. “I just want to take a look. If I like what I see, I might take those emotional inhibitors out of you.”
Metal Sonic simply stared.
“That would be wonderful, Father.” Sage replied.
“I’m glad you like that idea. Now follow me, please.”
Sage hovered by his side. Metal Sonic trailed behind, its footsteps echoing in the hall.
Or his footsteps, as the case may be. Ivo would have to ask for a preference.

SHADOW SAGA: A Heart of Gold
(this is a written chapter; click below to view the entire piece)
Blades of grass danced gently in the hillside’s warm, late-spring breeze. The brilliant afternoon sun beamed down from above, inviting the scenery’s vibrant hue to awaken and share their artistry with the rest of the world. Flickies filled the air with their sweet, happy melody as peace continued to reign over Mobius, the incident with the Black Arms all but a distant and fading memory.
Shoom!
The grass stirred from the sudden gale, yet quietly returned to their gentle dance.
Shoom!
The flickies glanced at the streak of cyan now lining the hillside, yet they continued their peaceful tune without any worries or qualms.
Shoom!
He was known by many names: The Galactic Hero, The Hero of Mobius, The Fastest Being in the Universe, The Blue Blur…
But his closest friends called him by only one.
CRASH!!
“Watch where you’re going, Faker!”
The ‘Faker’ in question popped back onto his feet, rubbing the now sore spot on his head where he’d collided with the young, incredibly moody and admittedly just as fast, hedgehog, “Why don’t YOU watch where YOU’RE going!” He shook his head, “Grr! Look! I don’t have time for this Shadow! I’m gonna be late and I still haven’t found the perfect g-AH!”
His younger, arguably equally as powerful, counterpart had taken a swing at him. Sonic dogged, quickly shoving his arm to the other’s forehead, stopping the smaller hedgehog in his tracks while crossing his legs and comically looking down at his free hand as if to admire some nonexistent nail polish, “You done yet, kid? I don’t have all day.”
“Grrrr! Don’t call me ‘kid’!!! I’m 50 years older than you, you know!!”
“Taking a few long naps doesn’t count, kid. I still have five years of life experience over you.”
Shadow huffed in defeat and jumped back, relenting his futile position, “Where are you off to in such a hurry anyway?”
“I could ask you the same thing? You crashed into me too, you know?”
Shadow immediately jumped on the defensive, “I don’t have to answer that!”
Sonic held up his arms in surrender, “Okay. Okay. Sheesh!” He paused for a moment before continuing.
Sonic rubbed the back of his head nervously, “Well…today is Eve’s 16th birthday and…admittedly, I…haven’t found her the right gift yet…heh heh…” There was a moment of pause as his lack of a proper gift weighed on him, “She’s one of my best friends so…”
The younger hedgehog scoffed and flashed his older counterpart a cocky grin, “That’s pretty bad, Faker.”
A serious and stern expression crossed the Blue Blur’s face, “Not as bad as forgetting her birthday altogether. Am I right, Shadow?”
Shadow looked genuinely shocked, then jumped into a defensive stance once more, “I didn’t forget!! I…just…” He averted his gaze.
Sonic cocked his head in confusion for a moment before the realization of the kid’s situation hit him full force. A teasing and mischievous grin spread across his muzzle, threatening to consume his whole face if only he could let it.
“You can’t find her a gift either, can you?”
The hedgehog’s ebony hue turned almost as red as the stripes on his quills.
“…No.”
Sonic zipped in front of Shadow’s view, “Well then, why don’t we team up? We can find a couple of presents and head to the party together!”
Shadow turned away.
Sonic gently nudged Shadow with a comical and teasing gesture, “C’mooooon! I’ll be fuuuunnn….”
Shadow continued to look away before eventually offering a solution, “…Rouge has a lot of…’spare jewelry’…that we can look through…”
Sonic shot a suspicious glance at the mention of the supposedly ‘spare jewelry’. Knowing Rouge, they were most definitely priceless artifacts she’d snagged over the years. Also knowing Rouge, most of them had to have come from her hot-headed boyfriend up in the sky. Although Sonic couldn’t argue: the two of them did make for a surprisingly functional and cute couple.
“Follow me.”
With that, the two supersonic heroes raced through the hills, taking caution to not disrupt the flow of nature with any accidental speed boosts as they hurried to their—hopefully present-filled—destination. Though neither wanted to admit it to the other, neither would settle for some random, trivial gift. It had to be special. It had to have meaning. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be a gift worth giving in the first place.
Within minutes, the two had arrived at a small, white, domed-shaped house close to the town Sonic and his closest friends frequented when searching for ingredients for Amy’s latest dish, selling parts and services to maintain his little brother’s workshop, or hosting a party like the one today for his dear friend who, at one point not all that long ago, had struggled to find her place as the only human among a world of Mobians…besides Eggman that is. Now, just over a year later, she was known and loved by many, always excited to visit town and see how everyone is doing; listening to their stories from over the years; entertaining the children with her music, games, and creativity; exploring and helping folks with the most menial tasks…
She’d made a home for herself here and Sonic was happy for her.
“Faker! Quit daydreaming! We’re here.”
Shadow reached inside his one sock, producing a small key. He inserted it into the door’s lock and turned the knob with a sharp ‘click’. He gently pushed open the door, which creaked slightly on its hinges. Sonic noticed the Ultimate Life Form’s tense demeanor practically melt away as he slid off his shoes on the heart-shaped mat at his feet. The blue hero followed suit, not wanting to disrespect the kid’s home, which Sonic took in with awe. Gentle beams of sunlight illuminated each room through pink-tinted curtains. A large, black sofa sat center in the living room, which led off seamlessly into a neighboring kitchen. Sonic was surprised to see a small flight of stairs near the front door leading to an upper story, given the small outward appearance of the house. Everything from the art, to the wall color, to the carpet, to the flowers and the vases: they were all either white, pink, or black.
And honestly, the aesthetic worked surprisingly well, giving the entire house a quiet, cozy atmosphere.
Sonic whistled, “I knew Rouge took you in after the whole ‘Metal Overlord’ incident, but I never expected…this. I’ve gotta hand it to you: this is a pretty nice place you’ve got here, Shadz!”
Shadow stiffened, whipping his head around, “DON’T call me that!!” Then he added under his breath, “Faker…”
“What was that?” Sonic asked smugly, having heard that last comment clear as day.
“Nothing! Look, just…pick something you like and get out! I have to figure out my present and get going.” He stormed upstairs.
Sonic rolled his eyes. He spotted a nearby jewelry dish and began making his way over, hoping to find something of note, “Sheesh! Wouldn’t kill you to show some hospitality you grumpy little-“
He paused, something near the sofa catching a ray of sunlight and reflecting a glittering gold light into his eye. He flinched at the sudden reflection but slowly made his way over to the object, picking it up to get a better look.
In his hand was a small, golden locket in the shape of a heart.
Curiosity got the better of him and Sonic popped the locket open, only to find that it was empty. There were no pictures. Just a shining, golden backdrop ready to be filled with the precious memories of its next wearer.
Sonic beamed, “Oh! Wow! Hey, this’ll be perfect!” He called out, turning back towards the front door, “Alright, Shadow! I’m ready to g-!”
His eyes met flaming-red irises, staring intensely at the locket he held in his hand.
“Give me that locket.”
“Huh!? No way! You said ‘pick something you like and get out’, so I did and I am!” Sonic began to walk towards his shoes before being interrupted by a sudden swipe at his hand. He dodged it, pulling his hand back defensively, taking care not to bump into any furniture.
“I want to give it to her!”
Shadow swiped again. Sonic dodged.
“Pick.”
Again, he swiped. Again, Sonic dodged.
“Something.”
Another swipe. Another dodge.
“ELSE!”
Sonic jumped up, gracefully landing on the backboard of the sofa where he now perched, clearly having the advantage, “Dude, what’s your deal!?”
Shadow rammed into the sofa with full force, “YOU WOULDN’T UNDERSTAND!!!”
Sonic jumped down and grabbed the sofa with his free hand, restoring it to its original position, “Then HELP me understand! WHY is this so important to you!?”
“BECAUSE IT WAS MARIA’S!!!”
Both of them froze stiff, staring at the other hedgehog in shock. The two of them stayed like that for a moment, the tension in the air now gone, replaced with a quiet sadness. Sonic’s face grew concerned and sympathetic. He tried to find the words, but they caught in his throat, “I-I…” He didn’t know what to say.
Shadow sighed. He knew better from his recent adventures than to keep pushing everyone away with his anger. There was no way that blue idiot could have known unless he told him. He looked down and closed his eyes thoughtfully.
“Maria…she loved to read books and gain all the knowledge of the planet below. Pa-Professor Gerald built her a library on the Ark filled to the brim with them. There was knowledge, love, and care practically spilling out of that room. It was Maria’s favorite place to be and then, after I was born and found my way into her life…as a genuine member of the Robotnik family…it became my favorite place too. We would spend hours in there, day after day, week after week, year after year, her reading me all of her favorite books and teaching me everything she knew from the flora and fauna to the humans’ customs and tall tales.” Shadow smiled, letting out a small chuckle, “She even taught me how to read, you know. Every time I pick up a book, it’s like she’s still here with me…hugging me tight and telling me that it’s all going to be okay…” He snapped out of his trance for a moment, noticing the blue blur and looking away quickly in embarrassment, “A-Anyway, one year we were looking through a book on earthly fashion and costumes and she spotted a picture of that very locket. When I saw her eyes light up, well…I asked the professor if he could procure it, given his ties to the planet below and…G.U.N…” Shadow had to pause for a moment, “He taught me what a ‘gift’ truly meant and I’ll never forget how happy Maria was when I handed it to her. She told me it was ‘the best gift she had ever received’. We never did get our picture taken. It wasn’t all that long…before…” He didn’t dare finish that statement and he didn’t have to.
Sonic knew what he meant.
“I found it…her locket…still on the Ark all these years later…I was going to hold onto it, to keep it for myself, but…Eve she’s…she’s…just like her…and I…I wanted to…” He turned away quickly. The last thing he wanted was for his #1 rival to see him cry. He hadn’t meant to pour out his heart like that, but once the memories started flowing, he just couldn’t stop himself. He liked remembering Maria. He wanted to remember Maria…especially the good times they shared together all those years ago.
“Shadow…” Without any hesitation, he held out his hand to the dark hedgehog, “Here. You give it to her. It belongs to you.”
Shadow turned around, a stunned expression lining his tearful eyes, “I…” He took the locket and smiled, “Thank you, Sonic.”
Sonic smiled back, placing his hands behind his head as if resting on them, “Heh heh! Don’t mention it!”
Another moment passed, then Shadow looked at Sonic with concern, “Wait…what about you?”
Sonic shrugged, heading towards the front door, “Eh…I’m pretty fast when it comes to thinking on my feet.” He slipped on his shoes and tapped a foot behind him before throwing a wink at Shadow, “See you at the party, Shadz!”
Shoom!
“Wha-! I TOLD YOU NOT TO CALL ME THAT, FAKER!!!!!!”
“HAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!”
Meanwhile, in the heart of the nearby town, the party was well underway. The birthday girl was playing tea party with Cream, Cheese, Rouge, and a nervous Knucklehead who was toeing the line between pretending to sip tea and wondering if the others were simply pulling a prank on him to keep the tea for themselves. The Chaotix were providing a fun and jazzy ambience to the scene with Vector on the piano, Espio on the saxophone, and Charmy hitting a small triangle above their heads. Vanilla was running the cake and snacks, often catching little winks from the large crocodile on stage and responding in like.
Tails and Amy, on the other hand, were not having as much fun.
“Hmm…No sign of him yet…”
Amy was tapping her foot impatiently. How dare their—supposedly—quick friend ruin the party she’d planned to perfection. He was the fastest being in the known universe. How was he THIS late?
“Oh Sonic’s going to get an EARFUL from me for taking so long…” Her wrist cuffs began to glow, “AND a taste of my Piko Piko hamme-!!”
“That won’t be necessary. He is on his way now.”
Amy and Tails turned to acknowledge the sudden voice behind them.
“SHADOW!?”
Eve hopped up excitedly and ran over to greet her new guest, “Ahh! You actually came!” Despite any past misgivings, he was her friend now and she was excited to see him starting to let himself be included in events like this.
Shadow’s face turned red like the stripes on his quills as he mustered his courage, swiftly holding out his gift to her without so much as a returned greeting, “Here! I-I hope you like it!”
Eve giggled to herself at the hedgehog’s awkwardness but soon stared in awe at the golden locket dangling from his hands, “Oh, Shadow!” She gently took hold of it and placed it around her neck, “I love it so much! I’ll never take it off for as long as I live!” She beamed, holding the golden heart tightly in her hands.
Shadow stared for a moment, remembering Maria’s words to him those many, many years ago. He smiled brightly, “I’m happy!”
Rouge looked on from the distance with a knowing smile. That was all she ever wanted to hear from the young hedgehog.
Shoom!
“And here’s MY present!” The Blue Blur gave an exaggerated bow as he made his swift and dramatic entrance.
“Wha-! How long were you waiting to do that!?” Shadow stammered all flustered. How long had that blue idiot been watching him?
“Long enough. Heh heh!” Sonic whipped out a small camera he snagged from Tails’ workshop, “C’mon, everybody! No time to lose!” He motioned to everyone to join.
Shadow smiled.
“Everybody say, ‘CHAO’!!”
“CHAAAOOOOO!!!”
