from the Rocky Mountain PBS website, bolding mine:
The City and County of Denver's wildly popular e-bike rebate program is putting on the brakes. Citing "overwhelming popularity," the Denver Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency announced Monday, Oct. 24 that the city will pause applications for the electric bicycles, or e-bikes, until early 2023. The city was scheduled to take more applications on Monday, Nov. 7 and Monday, Dec. 5, but those dates will be postponed. "This decision came after the city exhausted three years’ worth of funding in six short months," the city said in a e-mail to residents who had subscribed to updates on the green energy rebate program. "During the pause, we will be working on adding additional funding to meet the overwhelming demand. We will also be making changes to the program to make participation easier and increase access." Funding for the program had come from a voter-approved sales tax that was estimated to produce $40 million per year to fund climate initiatives. Other incentives were available for green technologies like heat pumps, solar panels and electric vehicle chargers. But the e-bike rebates, which started at $400 and went up to $1,700 for income-qualified residents were by far the most popular part of the program, likely because it was the only rebate option that didn't necessitate being a homeowner.
Okay, I don't know that I have a fully-formed Point that I want to make about this situation and its applicability to wider policy issues in the US here, but. You guys, as An Entire Renter who wants to kick the voice in their phone whenever they get youtube ads about "HEY ARE YOU AN OREGON HOMEOWNER?? (IF SO GET UR CHEAP SOLAR PANELS HERE!)" it is absolutely making me do the "flames on the sides of my face" meme internally to see that this is the only one of the policies here remotely addressing climate/energy/transportation/etc. in a way that makes a difference to primarily median-and-below income groups, and it was so popular it went through its funding in 1/6th of the allotted time frame.
Like just imagine what kind of accomplishments we could manage if all of our policies weren't tied up in individualist-minded homeowner-blinders circle-jerking methodologies. Fucking hell.

Here's how 'Minecraft' Creates Its Gigantic Worlds
Have you ever wondered how Minecraft can produce massive worlds that are still chock-full of little details, like intricate cliff faces and waterfalls? PBS' Game/Show is more than happy to explain in a new video. The game relies upon procedural generation. This automatically creates objects and environments that appear random, but are guided by a set of rules. For example, mountains are usually rocky and covered with snow, while low lands are often full of trees and grass. Cobra Planet
Perlin noise calculations are used to create rough textures for Minecraft. It starts at a broad scale, drawing a topographical map. Then it adds sound through finer terrain details like lakes, shrubs and animals. It also has enough freedom to create surprising delights, such as the elaborate rock structure that you see above . As in real life, there's an incentive to discover what's just in the next corner.
Procedurally-generated game content certainly isn't new. Spelunky and the Diablo series make use of it to keep their worlds current, while Borderlands uses it to generate unique weapons. The seemingly endless array of worlds that will be featured in the forthcoming No Man's Sky would be impossible without it. It's safe to say Minecraft's dependence on math is what makes it unique. Each playthrough is unique and you may not have seen everything.

Here's how 'Minecraft' Creates Its Gigantic Worlds
Have you wondered how Minecraft can create massive worlds that are also full of little details, like intricate cliff faces and waterfalls? PBS' Game/Show is happy to provide an explanation in a brand new video. As you'll see below Mojang's game is based upon procedural generation. It automatically creates environments and objects that are at once random, yet guided by rules that ensure the same logic. Mountains are always rocky and covered with snow, for example, while the low lands are typically full of grass and trees.
Minecraft is specifically based on Perlin noise calculations, similar to the ones you use to create a rough-looking texture for a 3D model. pnp89 It begins at a broad level by painting a basic topographical map, and then adds "noise" through more fine-grained terrain details like wildlife, lakes, and shrubs. Importantly, it gives you just enough flexibility to allow for unexpected delights, like the elaborate rock structure you can see above. Just like in the real world, there's an incentive to explore what's around the bend.
Procedurally-generated game content certainly isn't new. The Diablo series and Spelunky use it to keep their environments fresh, while Borderlands makes use of the code to generate one-of-a-kind weapons. The seemingly endless variety of worlds that will be featured in the forthcoming No Man's Sky would be impossible without it. It's safe to say that Minecraft's dependence on math is what makes it unique. Every playthrough is unique, and you might not have seen everything.

This Nasty Parasite Is Ruining Monarch Butterfly Wings, October 11, 2022
Monarchs are locked in a battle with Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE), a parasite that can trap a butterfly in its own chrysalis and deform its beautiful wings. Turns out there is a right way, and a wrong way, for you to help these butterflies in your backyard.
Monarch butterflies are one of the most recognizable animals in the world, but these beloved insects face have lost much of their historic milkweed habitat to agriculture and development. As a result, monarchs are more concentrated on the milkweed plants they have left. Monarch caterpillars are completely reliant on milkweed for food and many people plant milkweed in their yards to help them. But not all milkweed is the same. Tropical milkweed, with its pretty orange and red flowers, doesn’t die back in the fall and that means that the protozoan parasite Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE) has more time to build up on its leaves. Monarch caterpillars inadvertently ingest the spores, which release the microscopic parasites into the caterpillar’s flesh. When a heavily infected monarch goes through metamorphosis, the butterfly will have lesions on its abdomen, making it stick to the inside of its chrysalis. “It gets stuck and you really see the butterfly struggle at that point which is a sad sight,” says Jacobus de Roode, a researcher at Emory University in Atlanta who studies the relationship between monarchs and OE. “Normally the butterfly comes out very smoothly, it pops out and starts pumping up those wings. But when they get stuck you can see them for minutes or even hours struggling and they just can’t get out. It’s kind of traumatic.”
- How do monarch butterflies help humans? Monarch butterflies are important pollinators that are hugely beneficial to the ecosystems in which they are found. - Where do monarch butterflies migrate each year? In the fall, monarch butterflies travel to their overwintering locations. The majority of monarchs live east of the Rock Mountains and they travel to central Mexico. The monarchs that spend their summers west of the Rockies travel to the central California coast. There is some overlap between the populations of monarchs. - How do monarch butterflies protect themselves? Monarch caterpillars feed on milkweed plants, which contain toxic substances called cardiac glycosides that accumulate in the caterpillar’s flesh and stay with it even after it metamorphoses into a butterfly. Both monarch caterpillars and butterflies have vibrant warning colors that tell predators that they don’t taste good. Deep Look, KQED San Francisco presented by PBS Digital Studios

A Journalist’s Story of Addiction & Recovery
The following is written by multimedia journalist, Dana Knowles, and originally published on Rocky Mountain PBS.  DENVER — I’m not anonymous anymore. I’ve taken my story out of dark church basements to shine a light on my experiences. I’ve given keynote speeches in ballrooms filled with hundreds of counselors and health care workers. I’ve participated in public service campaigns. I’ve shared my…

Before Cloud disappeared into the Pryor Mountains in 2016 (and like a legend his body was never found), he sired 3 final foals to the mare Feldspar. First was a blue roan named Mato Ska - meaning "silver bear" in the Lakota language. Then Cloud's Encore, a filly that was identical to Cloud. And finally he sired Cloud's Pride, a buckskin colt. Cloud's Encore and Cloud's Pride would go on to have their own foals. I don't know about Mato Ska - if any of you know I would love to know!

The Fort Lewis Indian Boarding School was one of hundreds of institutions set up in the latter part of the 19th century to erase Native American culture. The rallying cry of the day was “Kill the Indian – Save the Man.”
Today, Fort Lewis College is finally reckoning with this troubling history and hopes for reconciliation and healing. Learn more about "Colorado Voices: An Indian Boarding School" here: https://www.rmpbs.org/colorado-voices/

Not So Black & White- Rocky Mountain PBS- Nisha Designs
“Release,” by Daniel Sprick ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — A new exhibit at Englewood’s Bleue Tile Gallery & Art Space is seeking to explore the nuance of such a divided world.
