Does anyone else remember how during ACoC people kept trying to prove that Caramelinda was somehow in on [redacted's] betrayal and was actually evil? And do we all remember how many times Brennan had to say "No, she's not evil or Bad or anything, she's just a woman who is trying really hard to make the best decisions she can with the information she has in the heinous circumstances she's in"??? Do we remember Brennan having to tell the Bad Kids that Zayne Darkshadow isn't just some cringefail fucking edgelord but a child who suffered greatly in his life and then DIED?
Does anyone else remember Kalina literally having to snap her own neck to get the Bad Kids to realize that she might not be just *blanket evil*?
I feel like I'm seeing something very similar happening with Porter and Kipperlily and I really hope Brennan once again subverts the idea that just because a character is antagonistic they are inherently Bad or Evil.
Also, just a reminder Protagonist = main character Antagonist = person opposing/challenging the main character
These terms do not possess a moral assignation.

Rude Red and Royal
Tumblr media
Just some quick and maybe obvious thoughts on the episode!
THE RED PRINCE AND RUBY
Tumblr media
The Red Prince and Ruby are foils for 2 reasons:
Both are trying to replace their missing parent. The Red Prince has to win every game he plays and Ruby has to be the Perfect Huntress because this is what their parents were like. This is their purpose:
Curious Cat: Your majesty, you must be so disrupt, not able to do the one thing you were put in this acre to do, I understand. It really isn't fair. You must play all games and win at any cost.
Both characters are dealing with feelings of grief and mange to get on each other's nerves. The Red Prince refuses Penny's sword and finds it disgusting, which upsets Ruby. Ruby instead ends up ruining the Red Prince's birthday and her presence clearly reminds the Prince of something bad, which happened to the Red King:
Toy soldier: Well, if it hadn't been for your kind, the King would still be here!
In short, the Red Prince may be rude, red and royal, but he also mirrors a part of Ruby. Specifically, he is complementary to Little:
Little is the positive part of the inner child. They are innocent, optimistic and generous, so they give Ruby hope and make her happy.
The Red Prince is the negative part of the inner child. They are pompous, selfish and annoying. However, they are deep down just a child grieving over the loss of a parent.
Ruby can't see this because she herself can't properly grieve. She lets her anger take control and starts arguing with a child, which clearly leads to nothing good. Luckily for her, the Curious Cat appears:
Curious Cat: It must hurt your heart, let me help!
It is important that their magic has the Red Prince cry. They let what was repressed come out and even if only temporally, this helps the Prince. Just like Ruby should just let the rain pour:
Tumblr media
But refuses to because she insists on pushing forward.
A GAME OF CHESS
The game of chess is a clear metaphor of RWBY's journey up until now. Ruby finds herself leading an army made of hopeless soldiers. However, thanks to her leadership and her friends' strength she manages to inspire the other pawns to fight.
However, when everything seems to be going well, a sudden change happens:
Tumblr media
Because of their humanity RWBY get targeted by both the red and the white pawns. This is similar to how Salem uses her opponents' human flaws and feelings to divide them. Ironwood lets fear conquer him and becomes RWBY's enemy, just like Salem is. The end result is that RWBY find themselves attacked on multiple fronts. However, they manage to stay strong and come up with a wonderful counter-offensive...
...only to fall from the table:
Tumblr media
Ruby: I don't know how that went so...wrong.
In the end, they might have fought a wonderful fight, but they did not get what they wanted. All they did was to ruin a child's birthday, to get shrunk and to almost die. Why is that so? Why couldn't they win against the Red Prince? Why couldn't they win in Atlas? Maybe now like then there was something they were not seeing, something they refused to consider:
Tumblr media
Ruby: We go to Vacuo, all of us, and hope that we've thought of everything.
HEROES AND MONSTERS
Red Prince: Wait, what type of creatures did you say you are again? Ruby: Well, Blake is a Faunus, Little is a mouse and the rest of us are... humans...
The Red Prince's reaction to the protagonists' humanity brings to mind Blake's words last episode:
Blake: We are doing what Alyx did! We are ruining everything!
It is clear humans have manged to mess a lot of things up in Ever After and the protagonists seem to be doing as much. This is partly because they struggle to understand the strange inhabitants of this world and vice versa. In short, there is a problem of empathy, as this episode clearly shows.
The Red Prince isn't just an arrogant brat, but clearly an orphaned child, who is struggling to cope and RWBY can't see it because too entangled in their own problems and in following up a script they do not understand.
Alyx won against the Red King and got help, so they should do the same, right? They should win against the Red Prince and get his support in exchange:
Ruby: You can throw a tantrum, if you want, but we won! Take us to the tree!
Except time changes and so do people. The Red Prince is different from the Red King, but Ruby can't approach him as his own person because all she wants is to get out.
This is similar to what happens with the Jabberwalker. The Jabberwalker is scary and so RWBY react as if they are fighting a Grimm... Except this creature has so far done nothing wrong... they seem to be minding their own business and are clearly distressed about something. And yet, every human they meet cruelly attack them.
It is not by chance, then, that an episode that introduces the idea humanity is "evil" ends with Neo cruelly attacking a monster-like creature that begs her to stop. Clearly this volume wants the characters to rethink the lines between heroes and monsters, so that they can start develop enough empathy to see the people behind the monsters.
EDIT BECAUSE I FORGOT
The Red Prince seems to loosely combine 3 characters:
The Queen of Hearts > He is capricious like her and wants to win by cheating. The passion for beheading is also taken from her.
The Red Queen > The Chess motif is taken from this character, as it is the idea of crossing a chessboard to win. In Through The Looking Glass, Alice has to cross the chessboard in order to grow up and to be a Queen. Here, the Prince finds himself wearing a crown, when it is too soon for him. He is a child, who must be a ruler and he struggles at it. He has not undergone the necessary development.
Humpty Dumpty > He breaks like an egg and all his soldiers - who are the King's soldiers in reality - are trying to keep him together. The metaphor here is that the Red Prince is affected by the loss of his parent and the toy-soldiers are trying to help him.
I should probably reread the parts concerning these 3 characters to properly comment on these allusions, though.

What are your thoughts on the twins (mis)communicating about whether to dish their secret to save Arima?
Ohhhh that’s a hard one!
I honestly don’t really a side for which twin in correct, cause in a sense, they’re both in the wrong.
The most obvious one is Aqua, my boy went behind Ruby’s back and exposed they’re mother’s secrete without consultation at all. And his defense being that he vaguely explained it to her in an ominous question about protecting her friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To give him the benefit of the doubt, it seemed like his goal was to make Ruby dislike him because of it, and pulled the same apathetic attitude he did with Akane when breaking up with her, so we can assume he had a larger goal here given that he could have handled it a lot better and we’ve seen that hes capable of it. ( to add to that thought, he leaked the information when Ruby previously said how much she hated leakers in chapter 93 )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it was wrong what Aqua did, Ruby is shown to be especially childish here. While Aqua’s question was vague, she did agree to do anything to help her friend. But in the argument, she barley mentioned Kana’s scandal at all and focused on Aqua’s “betrayal” of their Mom’s image. While acknowledging that they’re little to no bad points to what he did and only helped the twins in their popularity. And sadly Ai is still dead, and the protection of her friend should be important enough to sacrifice Ai’s image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We can also mention she’s being hypocritical here. She got mad at Aqua for doing anything for popularity, while she has done the exact same thing and gained most of her popularity from underhanded methods that she was getting so mad at Aqua about. In their previous argument in chapter 93, we also see that she told him that she would do almost anything to be popular and get to the dome like Ai. And wouldn’t a scandal with on of bkomatchis members affect if they would go or not?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly I really hope they make up soon, as a Hoshino twins focused account this was a slap in the face, but at least they’re interacting???😭

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no- Oh that's bad. Please don't just hand Ruby over to him- especially if he already looks mad! If you can turn around and get the distortion out of there, do it! If not, then just make sure that Da- Norman can't do anything without being caught in the act. I-If I'm right, t-then he won't d-do anything if there's a w-witness. I c-could be wrong.. b-but I hope I'm not. I really really hope I'm not...
-Cardinal.
We've been sitting here for a while .. Ruby woke up a second ago. I don't know what you're freakin' out about - Norman hasn't done anything .. he got him an ice pack too!

Elise certainly does deserve the whole world, especially since she sacrificed her happiness for it. Bearing the world on one's shoulders for years like a mule must take it's toll.
Im glad sonic was able to give her a taste of freedom. It's quite telling that even Sonic himself acknowledged that being a princess isn't easy (it's no disney fantasy)
Thank you! She does! 🧡

Can I order a headcanon for season 5 Brio please??😇 Also, your read on Rio seems so accurate like??? Having you as a writer on that show would have answered prayers I swear
Ah, thank you so much, anon! Given how much time I've spent over the last few years thinking about Rio, I'm very happy my read feeels accurate, haha.
And sure! Mmm, I'm gonna say - -
It wouldn’t have started well.
Because yeah, okay, s4 might’ve ended on the hook of a promise, of a path cleared, of something real, but she gets home after the park to a frantic Greg and the understanding of just what Annie’s done, and it all goes to shit.
Because it is Rio’s fault this time – he’s the one who had Lucy killed, even if Beth knows that her blood is on her hands too, he’s the one who got her fingerprints on the gun, and it was his threats that made Annie replace them with her own, and Beth feels the familiar rush of anger, but she also feels something bottom out in her in a way she hasn’t since Dean took the kids.
The staggering depths of her own despair.
And she would’ve gone after him at first, tracked him down at the bar, and she didn’t throw a pool ball this time, but she stood in his way, made him face her, spitting fury in a way she couldn’t contain, and Rio just - - he didn’t know what she was talking about. He wasn’t across Annie’s deal with Mick, and maybe Beth used that against him. Maybe she told him he was some king to not know what was happening in his kingdom, and Rio smarted, teeth grit, and suddenly that path that had felt so clear earlier that day was gnarled and overgrown.
Every old seed of hurt sprouting, every sharp-toothed betrayal yawning awake.
And so they split, fracture, and Beth goes back to her house without Dean but still with her children, and she googles criminal lawyers in-between bath times and leaves bitter voicemails on Mick’s phone after a few too many drinks.
And Rio, despite himself, calls Gretchen.
Which - - fuck, isn’t easy, right? Because Gretchen’s technically on Nick’s payroll, not Rio’s, and he’s already given her a mountain of shit with Nick’s arrest, but Rio tells her this is something real.
Somethin’ to maybe get back a bit of that soul she’s always complaining she’s lost.
So the next day when Annie’s pulled out of her cell and into another room, she’s not sure what to say when her court-appointed lawyer is gone and Gretchen’s there instead.
And it’s immediately different for Annie, right? Because Annie has no idea who she is, but the difference is stark immediately, and Gretchen is so collected and feels nothing like the lawyer she got for her custody trial or felony drug charge, and it’s the first time Annie’s taken a breath since the cops knocked on her door, and she knows it’s Rio, but she thinks Beth got him to do it.
So when she and Beth finally get to see each other, she says thank you.
(But Annie thinks no, she thinks this was supposed to be me being the un-fuck-up, she thinks this was supposed to be me looking after you).
And god, what’s Beth supposed to do with that?
She can’t bring herself to talk to Rio about it – sinks herself instead into scrounging up the money to pay Annie’s rent so she doesn’t lose her apartment while Gretchen’s working to get her out, into looking after Ben and her own kids and deflecting Greg and Nancy’s interrogations about it all, and trying to stay on top of the club and the city councilwoman work and ignoring the way Dean wants to talk custody arrangements, and god, all Beth really wants is Ruby.
And it’s sudden.
The way Ruby just shows up.
The way Ruby just steps into Beth’s living room and holds her, and maybe it’s only then that Beth really cries.
Only then that she feels like maybe she can get through this at all.
And the thing is, Rio’s maybe avoiding her too, because he’s not doing drops or pick-ups (and neither is Mick, which is good at least, because Beth’s not sure what she’d do if she saw him again right now), and Beth’s got no idea what to make of that, nor the gnawing feeling in her gut every time he misses a meeting.
But it’s not that long before Gretchen gets Annie out – a long argument of technicalities and legal loopholes that Beth doesn’t entirely understand – and Beth leaves the kids with Ruby and gets her sister back into her apartment and feels some storm of relief and guilt as Ben cries on the couch and Annie asks her to leave, to let her talk to her son alone, and Beth does, and she goes home, and she’s not sure what to make of it.
Rio’s G-wagon on her street.
He’s not in it though, and the familiar spark of something is felt in the sparse desert of exhaustion inside of her, but he’s not waiting at her doorstep or in her kitchen or in her bedroom, and then she sees him from there – sitting on the picnic table like he did all those months ago.
And it’s easier than it should be to slip out, to stand with the winter air nipping at her collar bone and lean herself back against the glass door and watch him for a minute.
He doesn’t look up right away, although she’s sure he knows she’s there, just threads his fingers together and holds them to the back of his neck, a cradle to push his head back into, and Beth wants to ask why, but she’s not sure what why she’s asking anymore, so instead, she just asks him if he wants a drink.
And yeah, he wants a drink.
It’s quiet inside without the kids, without Dean, and it’s not awkward like it was that time she brought him in to say goodbye, but it’s not exactly comfortable either. A stranger sort of silence that settles like a spell, and she feels him watching her when she pours him a drink, sees it when she walks over to him, passes him a bourbon, and she doesn’t say thank you because it’s his fault Annie was there at all, but she hopes maybe he tastes the words on her lips anyway when she presses them to his.
And it’s not like the first time, it’s not even like the other day – the path is still overgrown, still dense with creeping vines, with thickening thickets and poisoned fruits, but Beth thinks she likes it that way.
After all, the hunger in her is a wild thing too.

Ruby: Hey Cindy, i got another question of the Schnee variety
Cinder: Don’t call me that, and I thought you were the seasoned veteran already?
Ruby: Well, Even Professionals have some short comings every now and again, ahaha. No, but this is a bit more, uh, Schnees adjacent? Y’know sometimes when we get swamped by reporters or paparazzi? I usually just run away but I saw a magazine which ran some story about us two being coddled and restrained from the world by the Schnees? As if they’re the ones who make us avoid 100 flashing cameras and shouting people.
Cinder, thinking about the paparazzi who’s cameras and equipment she’s consistently torched for reasons minor to justified: Yeah I got nothing kid, just don’t pay them any mind

Sun bursting into Team RWBY's dorm: Yo! Tubes!
Ruby: Tubes?
Sun: Rubes! I was wondering if you and your team were still going to the party tomorrow?
Ruby looking around the room at her relaxing teammates: Uhhh
Ruby turning back to the door after getting a confirmation from them all: Yup! We're all going!
Sun cheering and pulling up a notepad grin behind his back: Awesome! Do you guys have any alcohol or something you prefer?
Weiss getting a disgusted look: I don't think drink
Ruby: Me and Yang don't drink either
Sun drooping a bit: Oh.. What about you Blake?
Blake: I also don't drink, but I do make a good jungle juice
Ruby, Weiss, and Yang suddenly sitting up: NO!
Sun jumping back: Whoa! What's going on?
Weiss: Don't let her mix ANYTHING together!
Ruby: It'll kill you!
Yang: Having even a sip will make you wake up naked in a Barnes&Noble's parking lot!
Blake crossed her arms: You all are over reacting...
Yang: Tell that to Jaune!
Ruby winced: I really didn't want to see that...
Weiss patting Ruby's shoulder: No one wanted to see that..
Blake muttering: Pyrrha was happy...
